Where is KHOU 11's 4:30am newscast?

I have received many messages from viewers saying that KHOU 11 Houston has canceled its 4:30am newscast.

This week, the early Channel 11 morning newscast has been replaced by a full hour of "CBS News Mornings."

But, fans of the KHOU 11 4:30am news, do not go back to bed just yet!  I hear that the early newscast will return soon.

In the meantime, here is some trivia for you. Did you know that KHOU 11 debuted the first 4:30 a.m. newscast back in September 2009? It was called "11 News First Look" and was anchored by Sherry Williams and meteorologist David Paul.

As far as 4:30am newscasts, KPRC 2 canceled its 4:30am news in January 2023. KSAT 12 San Antonio (both KPRC and KSAT are owned by Graham Media Group) canceled its 4:30am in October 2023.

Also, early risers can still grab their coffee and watch Houston TV news starting at 4 a.m. on the newly launched ABC13 KTRK "First at 4AM" and the very longtime running FOX 26 KRIV 4 a.m. newscast.

Ruben Galvan joins KHOU 11

Former KPRC 2 features reporter Ruben Galvan joins KHOU 11

Former KPRC 2 morning feature reporter Ruben Galvan is returning to Houston, but this time at KHOU 11's H-Town Rush.

"I had the best experience and built some great, long-lasting friendships," Galvan told Chron.com's Marcy de Luna. "It's like a homecoming for me."

Multiple sources told me this is not the first time Galvan has been talking with another Houston TV station after his channel 2 departure.

Galvan left KPRC after two and a half years in 2016.

Post Houston, Galvan returned to his former television station XETV San Diego 6 News (CW affiliate) as a freelance anchor/reporter. He then moved to Los Angeles to work for a science website.

The Spring Branch's Northbrook High School and the University of Houston grad previously worked at KXXV Waco, Temple, Killeen.

Galvan takes over the spot Sherry Williams left in August 2018 for a new career with HISD.

The changing faces of Houston TV news 2018

After 42-and-a-half years in television news — seven-and-half-years at WOWT-TV in Omaha, and nearly 35 here at WFAA – WFAA anchor John McCaa intends to retire in March of 2019.

Former WFAA 8 investigative reporter Brett Shipp is hoping to reinvent his wheelhouse after leaving the Dallas-based station late last year to run unsuccessfully for Congress.

WFAA 8 Sports broadcaster Dale Hansen, ‘a fat, white guy in a deep red state,’ is an unlikely liberal hero.

After joining Dallas-based Fox4 in June to replace Jenny Anchondo as the weekend Good Day anchor, Hanna Battah has been bumped up to weekday editions of the show.

It’s been an up and down ride for Laurie Passman, who was named D-FW-based CBS11 KTVT’s vice president and news director after being bypassed for that position in January 2017.

I told you this week that KHOU 11 anchor/reporter Sherry Williams was leaving. Now we know her new career...HISD press secretary.

Former KTRK abc13 MMJ Tracy Clemons recently left the HISD press office to join FOX8 WGHP in Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem.

Here is the HISD release:

Aug. 31, 2018 – Sherry Williams has been selected as press secretary for the Houston Independent School District.

Williams, an Emmy-winning journalist whose career spans three decades, joins HISD from Houston’s KHOU 11 news team. She previously anchored the 9 p.m. news at CW 39 and reported for Fox 26 Houston. She also has worked in broadcast markets in Dallas, Detroit, and Bryan-College Station.

Williams grew up in Houston’s Third Ward near the Texas Southern University campus and attended HISD’s Turner Elementary School, Lanier Middle School and Lamar High School.

“I am thrilled and eager to start this new endeavor with the Houston Independent School District Communications team,” Williams said. “I look forward to serving the school district that helped me immensely to become the person I am today.”

Williams attended Texas A&M University in College Station, where she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism. She began her broadcast career as a reporter and anchor at Bryan radio station, WTAW, while she was still in college.

“Sherry brings a wealth of media experience into her new role,” said HISD Chief Communications Officer Rebecca Suarez. “She is a gifted storyteller, and she is going to be an incredible asset to our team.”

In addition to her Emmy Award, Williams also has won awards from the Associated Press, the Houston Press Club, the Dallas Press Club and United Press International.

Williams will begin her new role Thursday, Sept. 13.

Sherry Williams announces departure from KHOU 11

KHOU 11 reporter/anchor Sherry Williams is leaving the TEGNA station this Friday.

The Houston CBS affiliate started a campaign to help as many Hurricane Harvey victims get their homes livable as possible. Williams is spending her last week covering these forgotten folks.

She tells me she did not make this decision to leave lightly.

"Channel 11 is a unique place where, like so many before me, I have formed many strong bonds with my peers," Williams told mikemcguff.com. "I will miss everyone A LOT! And I will miss 'being with' all the great people who tune in to watch!"

Williams grew up in Houston's Third Ward and attended Turner Elementary, Lanier Junior High and Lamar High School. She earned her journalism degree at Texas A&M - even started working at Bryan radio station, WTAW, while still in school as an Aggie.

Williams went on to work in Dallas, Detroit and as a correspondent for Black Entertainment Television.

She returned to Houston to work as a reporter for FOX 26 KRIV.

Later, she anchored CW 39's KIAH's (then KHWB) return to local news with Alan Hemberger.

She then joined KHOU.

"I am very grateful for the 9 years I have spent being part of the KHOU family," Williams told me.

As someone who runs marathon, Williams founded the KHOU 11 Bike Team in 2010 which is made up of co-workers and friends who shared a desire to complete the 180-mile MS 150.

What I did not realize until reading her bio is that Williams is married to her college sweetheart, Rube Williams, Jr., Ph.D. Perfect for Houston, Dr. Williams is a real life rocket scientist!

KHOU 11 makes major anchor changes

Morning, evening, night, weekend anchor changes at KHOU 11



KHOU 11 is going through major, major anchor changes. In fact, in my time blogging and before, I don't ever remember a change to this degree all around the same time at a Houston TV station.

Multiple sources are telling me that a meeting was held in the channel 11 newsroom this morning announcing the following anchor schedule changes.

Morning show:
Russ Lewis (incoming from KGW Portland) and Lisa Hernandez (moved from evening anchoring)

4pm:
Rekha Muddaraj will be added (from weekend night anchoring)

10pm:
Len Cannon and Mia Gradney (moved from and possibly still working evening newscasts)

Weekend mornings and nights:
Ron Trevino (moved from morning anchoring)

Sherry Williams will be moved from weekend morning anchoring to weekday morning reporting full-time.

Unknown what will happen to morning anchor Lily Jang at the moment. UPDATE: Lily Jang will be a 4pm feature reporter until her contract ends.

At this point, we do not know when all of these changes are taking place. I assume Greg Hurst will remain on the evening shows.

I reached out to KHOU for comment and have not heard back. If/when I do, updates will be posted here.

What do you think of the new lineup?

From an outside perspective, KHOU does well in overall household viewing ratings-wise, but has been lacking in the younger demographics coveted by advertisers. The other Houston stations have been doing better in the 18 to 34, 25 to 54...etc. age ranges. I would imagine this is the reason for the big shakeup under new news director Sally Ramirez.

Hope you're not in a post-Valentine's candy slump this Monday morning, so here is a sweet TV related story from this past heart filled weekend.

KHOU 11 anchor Sherry Williams was doing a story on people roping down the side of METRO's HQ for charity and uncovered this lovely gem:

Metro staff member Margaret O’Brien Molina wore a wedding dress as she rappelled to help raise money for The H.E.A.R.T. Program.

"I put it on Facebook. I said, 'If I can raise $500, I'll wear a wedding gown and $1000, I'll wear a wedding gown with the veil,’” Molina said.

In a couple of months, she will wear another dress when she walks down the aisle with former Houston TV personality Don Nelson.

"One that's a little different will be worn for real, coming at the end of April. We're going to get married,” Nelson said happily.

KHOU 11 has video server crash; replaces morning news with CBS

KHOU 11 learns old Beta SP tapes were more reliable

During a blizzard, you'd expect the TV stations in the affected areas to have technical trouble, but Saturday morning, it was a Houston station that got attacked by gremlins.

KHOU 11's Saturday morning news was taken down by the old computerized newsroom thing. Anchor Sherry Williams took to Facebook to explain the problem.

"All dressed up with no place to go," Williams wrote. "Our video player system crashed at #KHOU this morning. We couldn't do our newscast. So sorry peeps! We are fixing the problem and we will see you on air later today!"

Ahhh, technology...

Viewer reports say the CBS national feed took the local news slot.

This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened over at channel 11. In September 2014, I wrote how CBS Evening News took the place of KHOU's 6pm news.

KHOU 11 morning traffic anchor Katherine Whaley tells me her last day reporting on the Houston commute was last Friday, July 4th, and she will be leaving the CBS affiliate later this summer.

"KHOU offered me a different position, which I ultimately determined was not the right fit for me," Whaley told mikemcguff.com. "I will be with the station through most of August."

In June, KHOU announced the return of Darby Douglas, who Whaley originally replaced in 2009. Douglas will once again perform morning traffic duties. According to the KHOU release about Douglas, Whaley was to move out of his way, but stay on as a reporter.

However Whaley tells me she is currently engaged in conversations for some upcoming opportunities. She also has a side passion.

"You may remember I am an active blogger, covering Houston food, my original recipes, and travel," Whaley told me. "I am planning to relaunch the site later this month. Stay tuned!"

I wrote about Whaley's blog, Dash of Decadence, last September.

According to her bio, Whaley previously worked in Las Vegas at KVBC as an anchor, reporter and weathercaster. Before rolling the dice in Vegas, she anchored and reported at KLFY Lafayette, Louisiana and KAVU Victoria.

Whaley grew up in West Houston, attended Memorial High School and is a Rice University grad.

Houston Woman Magazine's 50 Most Influential Women of 2013

Houston Woman Magazine has released its Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2013 and there are some TV names in there.

Latina Voices host Minerva Perez and KHOU 11 anchor Shern-Min Chow made the list.

According to a release, each honoree was first nominated for inclusion on the “50 Women” list by a current subscriber of Houston Woman Magazine and then selected by the staff of the publication.

“Those selected as Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2013 are individuals with vast networks of social and professional connections," Beverly Denver, publisher of Houston Woman Magazine, said. "They have earned an enviable reputation for possessing an expertise in a particular field or arena. They are considered knowledgeable, credible and trustworthy. The thoughts and actions of these women influence the thoughts and actions of others. It is our distinct privilege to be able to introduce these remarkable women to our community.”

KHOU 11 anchor Sherry Williams just tweeted the news that former Houston anchor Alan Hemberger has died.

Friend Mason Turner told me he had just talked with Hemberger Saturday evening about the Red Sox win.

"When his sons couldn't reach him [Sunday], they had a welfare check made and that's when his body was discovered," Turner told me.

The Houston Chronicle said the anchor, 65, died of an apparent heart attack.

Hemberger worked at KTRK through the 90s as its Live at 5 anchor with Melanie Lawson, a brief stint at KEYE Austin weekends and then last at KIAH 39 (with Sherry Williams) as the main anchor. The Houston Press awarded him best local TV anchor while at KHWB (now KIAH). He also worked at Entertainment Tonight as Alan Arthur and KMOL San Antonio (now WOAI).

Alan Hemberger

The last time I talked with Hemberger was almost a year ago. He was retired in Laguna, California and doing a weekly radio show at 93.5 KXRN a non-commercial station. His show was called 'The Laguna Beach Blues Boy.'

"The Pacific Coast Highway is out one window, the ocean out the other," Hemberger told me last November. "I'm returning to my first love and roots. Hope to do some high school play by play too."

As I've written before, Hemberger was very nice to me when I interned at KTRK in the mid 1990s. I never forgot that and I think it is an important lesson for today's broadcasters.

He will be missed.

Alan earned a Bachelor's Degree in Speech from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. He began his career in television at KFDA-TV in Amarillo as News/Public Affairs Director and the 6pm & 10pm anchor.

Alan went on to co-anchor with Dixie Whatley on "Entertainment This Week" for Paramount Television in Hollywood, California. For two years he covered Hollywood movie premieres, and high profile events for "Entertainment Tonight," including the Oscars, the Emmys, and the Grammy awards programs.

Alan came to Houston in 1989 as the midday and 5pm news anchor at ABC's KTRK-TV. For 9 years, he anchored for KTRK-TV's midday news and Live at Five. While at Channel 13, Alan covered many high profile news events including the Luby's mass murder, the ATF raid on the Branch Davidian Compound, US forces in Somalia and the Oklahoma City Bombing.

Alan joins 39 News from the CBS affiliate KEYE-TV in Austin, Texas where he was the primary weekend anchor.

I hear KHOU 11's Great Day Houston executive producer Peggy Murphy has left the station. Sure enough, her bio was removed from the Great Day bios page. KHOU offered no comment.
