Mia Gradney named KHOU 11 5pm anchor; Lisa Hernandez returns from maternity leave

KHOU baby bottles and anchor schedule changes

As I tweeted yesterday during KHOU 11's 4pm news, anchor Lisa Hernandez returned to work after her maternity leave with a little schedule alteration.

"I cried as I left the baby for the very first time," posted Hernandez. "So predictable (smile emoticon). Thanks to Len, Greg, Mia & the rest of the crew for helping me get back in the groove!"

Taylor Angeline Blank was born back in August.

And now changes are afoot in the channel 11 anchor schedule.

I received lots of email/social media messages that it was announced yesterday during the newscast that morning anchor Mia Gradney (who had been filling in for Hernandez) has been named the new 5pm anchor with Greg Hurst. Thanks to everyone who wrote in about this.

Pre-baby, Hernandez anchored the 4pm, 5pm and 10pm news. So it looks like she gets a break after the 4pm from now on until the later news.

** UPDATE **
A KHOU rep tells me Greg Hurst and Mia Gradney will co-anchor KHOU 11 News at 5pm. Lisa joins Greg and Len as co-anchor of KHOU 11 News at 6 and she continues to co-anchor KHOU 11 News at 10pm with Greg.

First day back from maternity leave! And, yes, I cried as I left the baby for the very first time...so predictable :-) Thanks to Len, Greg, Mia & the rest of the crew for helping me get back in the groove!

  1. Why isn't it racist when they don't have any white people on, or very few, even when whites are still the majority here? I mean, if it was the other way around, they would say it's racist. Also, why are black anchors allowed to make commentaries talking about false racism, but yet if a white did this, they would have their life ruined? I don't know if you will post this, but I just think people need to think about this . If people want an open dialogue regarding racism, then we have to talk about how it goes both ways.

    1. Whites aren't the majority here. Houston is a minority-majority city. It's so diverse, there is no one race/ethnic group that has a majority.

    2. Um, yes they are. Hispanics aren't set to become the majority until 2023. Do some research! Diversity has nothing to do with what group has the majority. Way to lie and spin it though!

    3. Non-Hispanic whites are the largest group in Houston, but are less than 50% of the population and therefor are not a majority in Houston. Your research should have shown you that.

  2. Greg Hurst is white, isn't he?

  4. Please reread my first sentence. You will see I said," or very few." I like that you said that though, because when a black person asks that question and a white person gives that answer you did, all hell breaks loose. I've done that on boards that talk about blacks on TV shows. Even thought there are a lot; I got attacked . for saying the same thing you said.

    Thanks for posting it, Mike!

  5. KHOU hasn't been that good ever since TEGNA Broadcasting took it over from Gannett.

  6. Why did they move Lisa to morning and Mia as the main anchor in the evening. What happened to Lily and Ron in the morning. That was a great morning team. Mia is fine but Lisa was the best.

  7. Mia has the most annoying nose voice ever, I changed channels cause I can't stand it. Otherwise all good with Greg and Len and all the other ladies there, sorry Mia.
