VIDEO: KHOU 11's new morning show takes on viewer critics

New KHOU 11 morning team wraps up first week on air, faces the audience head on

New KHOU 11 anchor Russ Lewis does not ignore viewer critics
As I told you months ago, Russ Lewis has arrived from TEGNA sister station KGW Portland and landed in Ron Trevino's morning anchor chair.

With his arrival came a massive channel 11 Houston anchor change, the likes I have never observed before around here.

Well, Lewis and newly moved co-anchor Lisa Hernandez (who came in from evenings and replaced Lily Jang on the show), have wrapped up their first week to mixed reviews.

And if I, a little free blogger.com blog, am receiving all these emails/social media/blog comment interactions about the changes, I can only imagine what KHOU 11 must be getting!

Today, the new morning anchors addressed the criticism on air by actually showing some of the complaints. I found out about this, because a viewer who is angry with the change, felt the station was mocking those who are not happy with the new morning team.

In reality, anytime a station makes major anchor or weather team changes, there will be fallout. Viewers become emotionally attached to anchors and TV stations like that...unless management wants to move those anchors around or get rid of them.

Eventually people will grow to like the new team or change the channel.

To get the station's ratings up, it appears KHOU news director Sally Ramirez decided to go big or go home back to Portland when she decided to blow up the TV anchor lineup she found upon taking the job.

Sometimes these bold moves are good and lead to TV gold, sometimes they lead me to write about a new news director coming to the station.

I mean, think about the KTRK news director who decided to put Marvin Zindler on the air in the 1970s. That was seen as a big gamble at the time...

It will be interesting to watch in the meantime. Stay tuned.

  1. See, this is the problem with newscasters in this day and age. IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU!!!! It's about the news. If someone says something you don't like, or tells you the truh and you can't handle it, deal with them off the air. They do this, so people will feel sorry for them and be on " their side. Too many news people want to be celebrities. Walter Cronkite and the other old timers were never like this.

    1. If it's not about them, then why are so many viewers complaining about the on-air personality? Maybe you just don't relate to modern news viewers.

    2. Do you really think you make sense? They are there to report the news, not to discuss themselves. People complain when you suck and they don't like you, that does not mean they should discuss it on the news. I don't expect someone like you to understand, because it sounds like you think EVERYTHING is about YOU. Do you think that it bothers people to call them old? Honey, you are going to be old one day. Hate to tell you that. So, if you care so much about the personality, then maybe they should not tell you what is going on and just talk about themselves. Is that cool? I'm really worried about this generation. The intelligence level is just not there. It's all about their egos and them.

    3. I need my morning team! It's hard enough to be a have-to early riser, but they made it positive. Their great humor, the cohesiveness. I could tell they not only enjoyed their positions, but also cared about their audience! PLEEEEEEEASE!

  2. I feel bad for channel 11. With the big war coming between 2 and 13 theyre like remember us?

  3. Don't forget that Fox 26 is likely going to take advantage of the chaos at KHOU-TV as well.

    1. They're already taking advantage of this. Scarlett fakhar will be on mornings in the fall.

  4. They didn't learn anything from the last time they moved Ron... I went back to 2. I liked Ron and Lilly.

    1. I have too. I watched 13 religiously and then one day they started making all these technical mistakes and Art just messes up all the time. It just seemed to change. Then I switched to 11 and found I didn't like Len very much, so I stopped watching. Now, I watch 2, because there isn't anyone else. I have never been able to stomach 26 and it just seems like they have gotten even more horrible(sorry). I think I'm going to get to the point, where I just read Facebook pages, to see how many people are murdered each day!

    2. "...Art just messes up all the time"

HAHA!! He sure does! It's like he speaks before his brain has a chance to process the words.

    3. I have to wonder if he maybe needs glasses, but is too proud to wear them on the air.

    4. I like Ron and Lily much better. I won't take it out on Russ & Lisa though. The station management made the decision, Ron & Lily have been complete professionals despite this. I'm sure it's tough for all of them, awkward at the water cooler.

If I had my preference, Ron & Lily would be there. I'm not the station manager or news director. I didn't make the decision. It's beyond my control.

If this is a mistake, the ratings will suffer. If you're not happy, write to management--be firm and be polite. Don't hate on Russ & Lisa over a management decision.

    3. Rumour has it KPRC-2 will have an AM anchor slot open soon due to lady going to be a full time mom this fall. Lily Jang doesn't have a no compete clause, so I figure she'll be on 2 by Fall.

    4. I'm going to assume Freeman or McNeil are on their way out!

    5. I'm guessing it's McNeil. Freeman is happy in the afternoons.

Well if Lily Jang moves to 2, then they're going to get a lot of good viewers. Lily + Jennifer = Hugh ratings

    6. If Lily moves over to NBC in the AM with Jen Reyna, that's going to be big ratings....and BIGGER erections!

  6. what kind of weirdo jokes about taking care of a married woman's child? If I was her I would've countered with I'll keep out boss company tonight while you do that. May as well change the call letters to KH-O-U-T soon enough.

  7. Ch. 11 needs a new set. Seems like they have the most outdated set. Every other station has a big open set now. That will at least get a fee new viewers for a while. When ch. 2s new building opens they'll probably build on their lead.

  8. Anon: KHOU-TV badly needs a new studio set!

  9. I am glad Chita and Darby are still there!!

    1. I'm just glad Chita is there, but she lost her appeal by getting married and changing her last name on air. She's losing a lot of male viewers to Jennifer and Scarlett

      Delete
    2. Yes, I'm sure she is losing a lot of the unattractive male vote, who bases things on dye, makeup and plastic and not talent.

  10. Lisa is much more suited for the evening news. I like her, but not n the mornings. The new guy does seem out of place. You can tell that he is not from here, and he doesn't know what he talking about. He very dry and he really doesn't ad lib well.

  11. I really liked getting my morning news from Lilly and Ron. The former morning crew had great chemistry
I also prefer Saturday show to stay as it was. I agree with the sports caster change, his raspy voice made it hard for me to understand what he said. Which is what I find with the new morning anchor.

  12. Russ is a Dork whose wife got him the job - not fair AT ALL.

  13. Anyone know why Lily Jang isn't engaged any longer? What's the scoop McGuff? I was excited she finally found her a foodie man, but maybe he was cookin' in another oven (if you know what I mean)....

  14. I loved the humor and obvious friendship between Ron, Lily, Chita and Darby. I'm not a fan of the new guy and Lisa. I will be searching for a new morning news station.
Thanks for the early morning laughs (and news) Ron and Lily!

  15. I know this is opening myself up for a load of criticism, but here goes....Portland and SW Washington folks love Russ Lewis! But hey, we are Portlandia, where it's weird, wet, green, inclusive, liberal, and diverse! We love everybody.
Give Russ a chance to earn your admiration. He won't let you down.
