Isis Romero exits KSAT San Antonio

Isis Romero, the long-running KSAT 12 San Antonio Nightbeat anchor, let TV viewers know her contract was not renewed with the station.

UPDATE APRIL 2022
Isis Romero joins KENS San Antonio

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2021
Stephania Jimenez joins KSAT San Antonio

Her last day with the station was a few weeks ago.

Isis Romero posts goodbye to KSAT San Antonio viewers

Here is what Romero posted to Facebook:

"To my loyal viewers,

You have always expected transparency and honesty from me, and over the years I have worked to deliver that to you as KSAT's 10pm anchor.  For this reason, I wanted to share with you that KSAT has decided not to renew my contract, and terminated my duties moving forward.  My last day on the air was July 12.

As you can imagine, the past two weeks have been filled with tremendous sadness, and words cannot fully express my emotions.  I am heartbroken beyond measure.

I enjoyed anchoring San Antonio's #1 newscast for the past decade, and I especially took pride in representing my culture and community as the city's most tenured Latina news anchor currently on English-language TV.  The past 11 years were filled with contributions and successes I will always be proud of.  To my colleagues, it was an honor to work alongside you all these years.

When I came to San Antonio in 2010, I fell in love with the city-- it is here where I built a home, a family, and a future.  I care so deeply about our viewers and our community-- and though my role with KSAT has ended, my love for you, the people of San Antonio, has not stopped.

I want to thank those of you who have supported me with your viewership these past 11 years, and for the incredible love and kindness you have shown me.  I will be forever grateful."

Romero's TV resume and family life

Romero joined KSAT in 2010 as a weekend anchor/reporter.

She previously worked for KSAZ Phoenix, Arizona and KZTV Corpus Christi.

The University of Texas at Austin grad, who grew up in Robstown, Texas, is married to KENS-5 reporter/anchor Phil Anaya.

Statements released concerning Romero not being renewed at KSAT

Phil Lane, the vice president and general manager of KSAT, said in a statement:

"We want to thank Isis Romero for her many contributions to KSAT TV and we wish her much success in her future ventures.  KSAT 12 has always strived for a workplace reflective of our vibrant and diverse community both in front of and behind the camera. This is a cornerstone of our culture and will continue to be so."

A statement by the SAAHJ regarding Romero's contract non-renewal said:

"The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists is shocked and troubled by the termination of Isis Romero from her position as the longtime, revered anchor for KSAT-TV’s Nightbeat. Her departure comes just seven weeks after SAAHJ released its diversity audit of TV anchors, in which Romero co-led.

The audit revealed a severe lack of Latino representation among anchors in San Antonio’s top four general market stations. It pointed out that only 21 percent of KSAT’s anchors were Latino. Overall, Latinos made up only a quarter of all anchors at the time the report was published in May, compared to a city where Latinos make up 65 percent of the population.

“We are deeply concerned about the decision by KSAT not to renew Isis Romero’s contract. She has been part of our association family for years. The lack of representation of Latinos and Hispanic journalists in news in San Antonio is beyond disappointing. Her departure means one less Latina at the anchor desk,” said Laura Garcia, president of SAAHJ.

After the audit was published, KSAT leadership contacted SAAHJ to have a meeting to discuss their diversity efforts. SAAHJ appreciated the outreach, though it appears the meeting has not resulted in the improvement of on-air diversity.

Romero was born and raised in Robstown, a small town near Corpus Christi. She has been a fixture in the San Antonio television scene for more than a decade, serving as a Tejana role model for the community. We look forward to learning more about the circumstances of her departure."

Kaiti Blake leaves KSAT San Antonio

Kaiti Blake announced she is leaving KSAT 12 San Antonio, but staying in Texas as a meteorologist.

In an August 2022 Facebook post, Blake says she is now a meteorologist and communications representative for Oncor in Dallas. She adds Oncor is the largest transmission & distribution electric utility in Texas - serving a large area that includes DFW, Tyler, Midland/Odessa, Waco, and as far south as Round Rock.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2022
Mia Montgomery joins KSAT San Antonio

Here is what Blake posted on Facebook about leaving San Antonio TV weather:

"I want to share with you that my time on the KSAT Roof is winding down. My husband and I will be starting a new adventure in the DFW area soon. (Oh, Theo is coming, too. 😸) My last day at KSAT will be July 6th.

This decision was 100% mine. I have been presented with an exciting opportunity outside of TV that will challenge me and take me out of my comfort zone. Most importantly, I’m keeping the title of, “meteorologist” - so, I’ll get to continue doing what I love. I’m really excited.

I want to thank our KSAT viewers for always being so supportive and loyal. Please know that my KSAT colleagues - from the news team, to our production folks who get us on the air every day - are working to serve YOU and truly have your best interests at heart.

I can’t say enough about Adam, Justin, Mike, & Sarah. It’s rare in TV to get to work with such great human beings. Yes, they’re awesome meteorologists. But, they’re even better PEOPLE & San Antonio is lucky to have them.

I also want to highlight a very specific group of followers on my social media accounts who got me help for my cat, Theo, a few years ago. I reached out in desperation and some of you pointed me in the right direction. Because of you, Theo is healthy & loving life. I could never repay you! And thank you ALL for always asking about him. It means so much.

Speaking of Theo, you’ll be able to keep up with his antics because I’ll be keeping my social media accounts going! My KSAT-branded pages will be going away after July 6th, but the following will still be active:

Facebook - Kaiti Blake (this page)

Twitter - @KaitiBlake

Instagram - @kaiti_blake

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making the last almost five and half years so wonderful!

Yours in Pumpkin Spice,
Kaiti"

It sounds like the weekend meteorologist's last day on KSAT will be the 5, 6 and 10pm newscasts on July 1, 2022.

And speaking of Pumpkin Spice, check out when Blake did her "Rooftop Weather" segment dressed as Wednesday Addams for Halloween!

Six KSAT San Antonio journalists leaving

Mark Austin, Mike Osterhage, Ursula Pari, David Sears, Jessie Degollado, and Marilyn Moritz are all leaving KSAT 12 San Antonio, the Graham Media Group station announced Wednesday.

The group retirement, as the station calls it, happens on June 26th and July 1, 2024.

Bernice Kearney, the news director of Graham's sister station, KPRC 2 Houston, also left earlier this week. Rick Gevers and Associates wrote her departure as "apparently one of many veteran employees taking a buyout across the company."

The week before that, Frank Billingsley announced he was leaving his position as chief meteorologist at KPRC 2 after nearly 30 years.

UPDATE
KPRC 2 loses 12 staffers in buyouts

As a media blogger for almost two decades, I would like to point out that it's highly unusual for six high-profile on-air talents to retire from television simultaneously. This anomaly is sure to fuel more speculation about the possibility of buyouts as Gevers mentioned.

For those asking, what is a buyout?  Indeed.com defines it:

"When an organization needs to reduce their expenses or workforce, they have several options for ending employment, including buyouts and layoffs. A buyout allows a company to boost the morale of current employees while maintaining positive relationships with those that are accepting a buyout."

KSAT promises to highlight those leaving.

"There is no question of the impact each of these amazing journalists has had, not only in the industry, but also to the next generation of journalists, to our employees, to our viewers, and to our community," said Ashley Parker, Vice President and General Manager of KSAT12 on the station's website. "We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mark, Mike, Ursula, David, Marilyn and Jessie for their exemplary service and dedication to KSAT12. They leave behind a legacy that will continue to inspire us for years to come."

Mark Austin

Anchor Mark Austin of 'Good Morning San Antonio' and 'GMSA @ 9' just celebrated his 25th year at KSAT in 2024. the Stephen F. Austin State University grad, who also studied meteorology at Mississippi State University, is a two-time  Lone Star EMMY winner.

"I wasn’t always a morning person but, somehow, I’ve made a career out of being one and I wouldn’t trade the crazy schedule for anything," Austin said online. "KSAT12 and San Antonio will always be home for me. I smile when I think about the amazing legacy we leave behind. KSAT12 is in good hands. From the bottom of my sleep-deprived heart, thank you San Antonio… for everything. I can’t wait to see what’s next for me."

Ursula Pari

Ursula Pari anchors KSAT 12 News at Noon and the News at 5 weekdays and joined the station in 1996.

"It’s been a privilege to be welcomed into homes across South Texas for 28 years, and I am grateful every single day that KSAT12 gave me the chance to join this vibrant and diverse community," Pari said online. "Now I’m looking forward to seeing what else I can do in a new chapter of life. I can’t wait!"

Mike Osterhage

"Good Morning San Antonio" meteorologist and "SA Live" host Mike Osterhage came to Texas in 1995 and previously worked for FOX 13 Memphis WHBQ, FOX 11 WLUK Green Bay, and NBC 25 News WEYI Flint, Michigan.

"I’ve been in TV news for 38 years… 29 of those at KSAT," Osterhage said online.  "That’s unheard of at most stations, but common at KSAT.  It’s a testament to a good product, great co-workers, and faithful viewers. Folks, be sure to keep saying ‘Hi’ in the grocery store! Retirement may be an end, but it’s also the beginning of new adventures."

Jessie Degollado

Jessie Degollado has been with KSAT since 1984, working as a general assignments reporter. Raised in Laredo and formerly an anchor/reporter at KRGV 5  Rio Grande Valley, the Baylor University grad has a deep understanding of border and immigration issues. An award-winning reporter, she has been a strong advocate for the growth of Hispanic journalists.

"Saying goodbye to my KSAT12 family of 40 years will be difficult, no doubt," Degollado said online. "Yet I am so proud of the work I’ve done covering stories that mattered to our viewers. I’m so privileged to have earned their trust through the years."

David Sears

Anchor/reporter David Sears has been with KSAT for more than 40 years.  The native San Antonian attended Texas Tech University.

"It has been an incredible ride over the last 40 years," Sears said online.  "I walked into KSAT12 as an intern in 1982. I was hired as a part-time sports producer in 1984 by then news director Jim Boyle, then went full time, then started my on-air dream in 1989. I have been given opportunities by management beyond expectations. I cannot thank the viewers enough for allowing me into their homes and their daily lives. They treated me like family. I am looking forward to the next phase but will always look back at my time at KSAT12 and I can assure you I will have a smile on my face."

Marilyn Moritz

KSAT’s 12 On Your Side Consumer reporter Marilyn Moritz joined KSAT in 1985.  In her nearly 40-year career, Moritz has served as an anchor, investigative reporter, and general assignments reporter.

"I walked in the door of KSAT one afternoon in 1985 and was reporting live three hours later. And, I’ve been privileged to tell people’s stories ever since," Moritz said online. "Forty-five years is a long time in this industry – 39 at KSAT, and I’m grateful that this career allowed me to witness so many big events and meet so many people. I’m always touched when people stop me in the grocery store to say that something I did helped them. That’s what it’s all been about."

"I have been honored to work alongside Jessie, Ursula, David, Marilyn, Mark, and Mike throughout my career," KSAT12 News Director Mario Orellana said online. "The impact they have made on this industry, this city, and this newsroom is immeasurable. I have learned so much from them and am eternally grateful for the paths they have paved here at KSAT12. As they embark on the next chapter of their lives, KSAT12 wishes Mark, Mike, Ursula, David, Marilyn and Jessie all the best in their future endeavors. Their impact will forever be felt in the community, in the homes of our viewers, and to everyone at KSAT12 who learned, and grew so much from their journalistic knowledge."

(Thanks Daniel)

Phil Lane named KPRC 2 Vice President and General Manager

Phil Lane

Phil Lane has been named Vice President and General Manager of KPRC 2 Houston from KSAT San Antonio where he holds the same position.

UPDATE MARCH 2025
KPRC 2 GM Phil Lane is retiring

UPDATE OCTOBER 2022
Dave Strickland exits KPRC 2

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2022
Ashley Parker named KSAT San Antonio general manager

Lane replaces Jerry Martin, who is retiring from KPRC after 11 years as the Graham Media Group Houston station head.

“I'm excited to join a wonderful local television station,” Lane said in a release. “KPRC is enjoying ratings momentum thanks to a talented team of local broadcasters who deliver important, engaging, and enterprising content to their audiences. I'm eager to build on that success while exploring new, innovative ideas for Houston. Now is our opportunity to transform our business so we can connect with and serve our community in exciting new ways. I can't wait to see what we accomplish together!”

“It is impossible to describe Phil Lane and his incredible leadership in just one sentence – to put it simply, he is a unicorn,” said Catherine Badalamente, President and Chief Executive Officer, Graham Media Group.  “While he has had a long and successful career running market-leading television stations, he is also a trailblazer and innovator whose skills are hard to match inside (and outside) of our industry.”

Lane joined KSAT in 2011. According to GMG, under Lane's leadership, KSAT maintained market-leading ratings in news and the number one local media website in San Antonio.

He launched numerous groundbreaking local programming initiatives including “SA Live,” a daily live lifestyle program, and “Texas Eats,” a local food series now distributed across the state.

Lane expanded KSAT’s digital initiatives with the streaming news series “KSAT Explains,” the launch of KSAT Plus content stream, mobile and OTT app, KSAT’s Big Game Coverage high school sports streaming network and the creation of Graham Media’s first membership program, KSAT Insiders.

Prior to joining KSAT, Lane had served as:

- VP and GM of WSPA and WYCW in the Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville/Anderson, NC, market from 2004 to 2011

- WJBF in Augusta, GA, from 2000 to 2004

- WRBL in Columbus, GA, from 1997 to 2000.

Lane is a 1987 graduate of Furman University with a BA in History.

KPRC 2 GM Phil Lane is retiring

Phil Lane

Phil Lane announced in a video to staff today that he is retiring from KPRC 2 Houston as Vice President and General Manager effective April 11, 2025.

I have not personally seen the video, but multiple sources confirm the information to mikemcguff.com.

He joined KPRC, succeeding Jerry Martin from Graham Media Group's sister station, KSAT 12 in San Antonio, in 2022, where he held the same position.

KPRC did not respond to my inquiries. If I receive a response, I will add it here.

When I asked Dave Strickland, the first KPRC news director to work under Lane, for a statement on the GM's upcoming retirement, he replied, "No comment."

During his nearly two-year tenure with the station, it created streaming offerings and added then cancelled television newscasts. Last year, KPRC debuted a new studio.

More likely coming top down from the Graham Media Group, if you've been reading this blog or other trade publications, KPRC has recently seen a significant number of longtime employees leave.  Just last year, the station had buyouts, along with KSAT, of notable figures such as chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley and news director Bernice Kearney, among many other longtime managers.  Staffers say this has affected the morale of those who remained.  My readers have also commented on social media that the station has also experienced a high rate of turnover among anchors and reporters.

The TV company also changed the management structure of the newsroom and publicly said that cutting anchors might be a way to trim expenses.

If I were Lane, I would have retired, too!

Joining KSAT in 2011, Lane led the station to market dominance in news ratings and oversaw the number one local media website in San Antonio, according to Graham Media Group. Under his leadership, KSAT launched local programming, including “SA Live,” a daily live lifestyle show, and “Texas Eats,” a food series now distributed statewide.

Lane also spearheaded KSAT’s digital expansion, including the streaming news series “KSAT Explains,” the KSAT Plus content stream, mobile and OTT apps, and the KSAT Big Game Coverage high school sports network. Additionally, he created Graham Media’s first membership program, KSAT Insiders.

Before joining KSAT, the Furman University grad served as Vice President and General Manager of:

WSPA and WYCW in the Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville/Anderson, NC, market (2004-2011)

WJBF in Augusta, GA (2000-2004)

WRBL in Columbus, GA (1997-2000)

Now that KPRC will be getting a new general manager, it will add to the list of new leaders who have joined Houston TV in the last year.  David Loving was hired by KHOU and Humberto Hormaza by CW39 KIAH in May 2024, with Mike Carr by ABC13 KTRK in September 2024.

Leslie Mouton leaves KSAT 12

"Big changes! After almost 21 years I am starting a new chapter of my life. I am so grateful for the wonderful years I have had at KSAT, and blessed to work with the best in the business. Thank you all for supporting me throughout the years, I love you!"

Mouton had been with the Alamo City ABC affiliate since 1999.

San Antonio television viewers were left wondering "What happened to Leslie Mouton?"

Mouton's television news career summary

Before her return to San Antonio with KSAT, the award winning journalist:
- Anchored the 10pm news on WOLO Columbia, South Carolina.
- Anchored mornings on CBS 11 KTVT Dallas
- Anchored mornings on KENS 5

Mouton's marriage to Tony “Maddog” Mattox

Mouton is married to retired Air Force pilot Tony “Maddog” Mattox.

The TV journalist met Mattox in June of 1989 while reporting on a story about the

Mouton met Mattox in June of 1989 while reporting on a story about the United States Air Force Thunderbirds at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, Louisiana.

Their first meeting was described on KSAT's website by Mouton.

"This handsome, cocky, young pilot heading out to fly an A10 saw me sitting there and walked up to me. 'Hi, my name is Mad Dog and I’m your pilot!' he said.

'No you aren’t,' I replied. 'I’ve already met my pilot!' It turns out about nine months later I would end up marrying Mad Dog aka Tony Mattox. But I digress."

The couple has a daughter, Nicole Danielle Mattox. Nicole interned and worked as a producer trainee for KSAT.

Mouton lives in front of camera with breast cancer

According to her bio, Mouton was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2000 at the age of 35. In a time when many did not talk about such matters, Mouton made a statement for cancer patients by anchoring a newscast without her wig to feature her diagnoses.

"I believe it was important for people to see the reality of cancer. I also know the heart-wrenching fear of losing your hair," Mouton said in her bio. "So, I wanted to inspire women not to be ashamed of their bald heads, and hopefully ease the fear of being bald."

That statement garnered national attention with coverage on "Oprah," "Good Morning America," "Weekend Today Show," "20/20," "Inside Edition" and newspaper coverage.

Leslie Mouton named social media director for Morgan’s Wonderland Inclusion Foundation Marketing after KSAT 12

Right now we know where Leslie Mouton is going after anchoring for KSAT.

In her post-television news life after many years with KSAT 12, Mouton was named social media director of Morgan’s Wonderland Inclusion Foundation (MWIF) in January 2021, which according to the press release, "coordinates fundraising, planning and communication for the unique theme park and related endeavors, all designed with individuals with physical and cognitive challenges in mind."

“We’re delighted that Leslie has joined us in helping communicate the many ways we’re pursuing our mission of inclusion,” said Gordon Hartman, who along with wife Maggie created non-profit Morgan’s Wonderland, thanks to inspiration from their daughter with special needs, Morgan.  “Leslie’s impressive expertise and experience will go a long way in shining the spotlight on our ultra-accessible™, fully-inclusive facilities for those with and without special needs.”

“Now I look forward to sharing another important message, one of inclusion with the MWIF,” Mouton said.  “While it all began with the fabulous Morgan’s Wonderland theme park, the foundation has blossomed into an evolution of inclusion. There are so many great elements that are truly changing the way people of all abilities can enjoy life side-by-side.  It is a blessing to be part of an organization with such a great purpose.”

Sarah Spivey named KSAT 12 noon meteorologist

Sarah Spivey announced Tuesday that she has been named KSAT 12 San Antonio’s official weekday noon meteorologist as of December 2025.

Here is what Spivey said on social:

"8 1/2 years ago I started at KSAT by working weekend mornings, and I have been waking up at 2 AM on Saturdays and Sundays ever since. I’ve loved the shift for many reasons, mainly because of the people I’ve been able to work with! Started with Bill Barajas and Stephanie Serna. Loved my time with Max Massey and Sarah Acosta.

With a baby at home, it’s best for me now to make the switch to weekdays. I’ll miss waking up with you all on the weekends, but I’m looking forward to being on the noon show regularly with Stephanie and Courtney Friedman!"

Friedman moved from the weekend newscast to the noon in April 2025.

Spivey, who for years has worked the weekend morning weather shift, has already become a familiar face on the KSAT noon newscast. On days when she is off during the week, viewers may see meteorologist Shelby Ebertowski or morning meteorologist Justin Horne filling the noon slot.

KSAT has not yet announced who will take over Spivey’s weekend morning duties, though it’s worth noting that meteorologist Elliot Wilson recently joined the KSAT Weather Authority team.

Spivey, who has been a member of the KSAT 12 Weather Authority Team since 2017, previously sat down with anchor Ernie Zuniga for a May 2025 episode of his Pickup Lines podcast. During the conversation, she shared her deeply personal journey with hearing loss and how KSAT ultimately supported her along the way.

A San Antonio native, Spivey is a graduate of Clark High School and earned her degree from Texas A&M University. She began her broadcasting career at KTEN News in Sherman.

Spivey and her husband, Michael, were married in January 2020 and welcomed their first child in December 2024.

Mario Orellana leaves KSAT 12 San Antonio

Mario Orellana announced on LinkedIn that he is leaving his KSAT 12 San Antonio news director position and moving into a Graham Media Group position (KSAT Owner):

UPDATE JULY 2025
Former KPRC reporter named KSAT news director

Career Update: After a nearly 30-year career at KSAT, I have decided to step down as News Director effective May 5th. Serving in this role has been my greatest honor, and I am deeply grateful to have worked alongside so many talented journalists.

I am going to miss this newsroom tremendously. Being the news director in the city where I was born and raised and in the newsroom where I spent my formative years is a success story that I am immensely proud of. San Antonio has so many stories to tell, and I consider myself so blessed to have helped cover our community. I know KSAT will continue that legacy.

Orellana was promoted to the news director job in January 2023 from the assistant ND job.

He took over for Bernice Kearney, who followed former KSAT GM Phil Lane and joined Graham Media Group's sister station, KPRC 2 Houston.

Orellana started as an intern back in 1995.

He was then hired on as a sports producer in 1996.

That was followed by his rise to editor, producer, “Good Morning San Antonio” senior producer, executive producer, and assistant news director in 2019.

This means a new news director for KSAT, with a new one named for News 4 San Antonio just this week.

John Paul Barajas named KSAT 12 weekend anchor

John Paul Barajas announced this evening that he has been promoted to KSAT 12 San Antonio weekend evening anchor from his reporting role.

"I’m honored to be stepping into the role of Weekend Evening Anchor," Barajas posted. "It’s a position that has been held by so many amazing journalists and KSAT greats. I'm excited about this next chapter and added responsibility which truly is a privilege. See you tomorrow at 5 and 10!"

Barajas fills the void left by Courtney Friedman, who was just promoted to weekday anchoring.

That means he and his brother, Bill Barajas, will anchor simultaneously in Texas, and only a few hours down I-10 from each other! Bill is the weekend anchor for Graham Media Group's sister station, KPRC 2 Houston, and he previously worked for KSAT.

We've been talking about the Barajas television dynasty for years. So, to catch you up, Jon Paul and Bill are the sons of former FOX 26 KRIV evening anchor Mike Barajas. They are the cousins of ABC13 KTRK Houston evening anchor Erik Barajas.

John Paul Barajas joined KSAT 12 in June 2021 from KRGV 5 in the Rio Grande Valley, where he was an anchor and general assignment reporter.

Barajas got his start in television journalism through internships at KTRK and KSAT.

A Jack J. Valenti School of Communication graduate at the University of Houston, Barajas is known to wear red ties on Fridays in honor of the Cougar Red Friday tradition.  You might have seen him on this very blog cheering on the Coogs ahead of the NCAA Championship in San Antonio.

Also, announced today is the departure of the KSAT 12 news director.
