Freddy Vela joined KXAN Austin in July 2024 from Nexstar Media Group's sister station NBC 23 KVEO Rio Grande Valley, where he was chief meteorologist.
Vela had been with the station since April 2020, first as a weekend meteorologist with sister station CBS 4 and later promoted to the KVEO chief job.
In 2017, he initially worked for CBS 4 before leaving to attend Mississippi State University for his Broadcast Meteorology degree.
The University of Texas-Pan American grad took some time off from television news to work as a theatre teacher for an elementary school.
He started his TV career with Fox Rio Grande Valley KFXV McAllen as Lead Weather Forecaster, following an anchor role with "Good Day Valley."
