KHOU signs deal on new building!

KHOU 11's new station address will be 5718 Westheimer - between Chimney Rock and Bering

I took a field trip to the new location!

KHOU announced today the execution of a lease agreement with 5718 Westheimer Road Investors, L.P. totaling 43,000 square feet of space at 5718 Westheimer in Houston.

KHOU will occupy three floors that will include two studios, two control rooms, an open collaboration space for all content producing departments, technical operations, sales and executive offices. Occupancy is anticipated in early 2019.

Susan McEldoon
“We’re delighted to have found a new, centrally located home for KHOU. 5718 Westheimer’s location near the Galleria district offers us ample studio and office space,” said Susan McEldoon, president and general manager, KHOU. “We’re grateful for the support of Houston Public Media, who stepped up to provide us with our temporary home after our building flooded due to Hurricane Harvey, but we’re eager to bring all of our team back together at 5718 Westheimer in early 2019.”

“We are thrilled to have a station with such a long history of journalism excellence move into 5718 Westheimer,” said CBRE senior vice president, Marilyn Guion. “Ownership recently renovated the building and created a bold new entrance along Westheimer. Over $10 million went into high-end amenities, including a new lobby, state-of-the-art conference center, a 4,000 square-foot fitness center, and updated restrooms and corridors throughout the building. These improvements give the tower a brand-new look and were instrumental in KHOU’s decision to make a long-term commitment to 5718 Westheimer.”

KHOU was represented in the transaction by Meredith LaPier and Collin Grimes of CBRE.

CBRE’s Marilyn Guion, Dave Hanusa and Tyler Merritt represented the building’s owners, UBS.

In May, KHOU will also begin broadcasting from a new downtown studio located at the George R. Brown Convention Center on Avenida de las Americas. McEldoon added, “This new street-level, glass front studio space will give our audience a front-row seat to all that’s happening across our city.”

VIDEO: KHOU 11 gives us a look at its new studio and newsroom

KHOU 11 announced it will begin occupying its new space at 5718 Westheimer beginning February 10. The station’s first newscasts from the new location are expected on February 17.

“We are delighted to be moving into our new home. All of us look forward to taking advantage of everything our new building and the Galleria district have to offer,” said Robert Springer, president and general manager, KHOU. “We are excited to share ‘the new KHOU’ our viewers and wish to thank the numerous partners who’ve helped us during this transition.”

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that the KHOU studios on Allen Parkway near downtown Houston were destroyed thanks to five feet of water flooding the building during Hurricane Harvey. Since then, the staff has been broadcasting from Houston Public Media's building.

The new channel 11 at 5718 Westheimer near Bering is 43,000 square feet of space with two large studios. Trust me, this is way more space than the tiny confines of its former and now demolished Allen Parkway location.

"This is more space than we have ever had," anchor Len Cannon said in the video.

The news desk that Cannon showed us is one where the anchors stand, not sit behind. This news studio is directly next to Deborah Duncan's Great Day Houston studio.

Like KPRC 2's new newsroom, the KHOU one will also be next to a huge bank of windows where lots of light will brighten the dark days of breaking news.

There will also be a newsroom set for the anchors to use.

In the same room is also a lounge area next to the desks.

"This is like the hippest lounge in town...it's a lounge minus the drinks I guess," joked Cannon.

Believe it or not, not too far away, Univision 45 also has a lounge, but KXLN's looks like an actual club. As I have blogged before, the Univision Uforia Lounge is used for radio station concerts and live TV productions.

I should also note that anchor Shern-Min Chow tweeted that this was the last day for KHOU general manager Susan McEldoon.

Chow posted a video of McEldoon talking to the staff where she said on her final day champagne was served in the department head meeting.

"It's just been such a privileged to be your GM," an emotional McEldoon said in the video to the newsroom. "There just aren't words, so thank you all for making me feel so special."

As I blogged last March, McEldoon postponed her retirement due to Hurricane Harvey's destruction of the station's old building. Later in July, owner Tegna announced Bobby Springer, the director of advertising and promotion at 9NEWS KUSA Denver would replace her.

KHOU 11 Houston studio evacuated

KHOU 11 Houston reports that a suspicious package forced the evacuation of its own Galleria-area building on Monday night.

For the 10 p.m. newscast, Channel 11 staffers left their studio at 5718 Westheimer and relocated to its downtown Houston KHOU Avenida Studio.

Police say an officer heard a vibrating sound around 7:30 p.m. when opening a package sent to the Saudi Consulate General on the 15th floor of the building.

Officers declared the package safe and let everyone back in the building around 9 pm.

KHOU moved to the Westheimer location in February 2019 after the massive floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey damaged its Allen Parkway studio in 2017.

Great Day Houston debuts new studio

Since Hurricane Harvey destroyed the old KHOU 11 studios, Great Day Houston has been taping shows from around the city.

Yesterday, the weekday talk show returned to a permanent home with its trademark studio audience at the new KHOU building on 5718 Westheimer. It will also once again be a live television show as its Twitter account noted:

In the past 18 months we’ve taped 350 shows, equaling 2450 segments. We’ve set up & taken down our studio equipment, lights, cameras, sets & furniture 156 times from over 10 locations across the city. It was all worth it as we went LIVE from our new studios this morning!

In the above video, we get a chance to see all of the places the show broadcasted from since 2017 such the Houston Food Bank, Hotel Icon, Emancipation Park, Big Brothers Big Sisters and others.

Almost a year ago, I blogged that the show was live temporarily during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Catch Great Day Houston with host Deborah Duncan every weekday at 9am on channel 11.

KHOU Avenida Studio in downtown Houston debuts

UPDATE OCTOBER 02, 2018
I'm not totally crazy, that is a new KHOU 11 logo we see on the new studio.

With little fanfare, channel 11 quietly debuts new KHOU Avenida Studio in downtown Houston

If you blinked Friday afternoon during channel 11's 4pm newscast, then you might have missed the debut of the TEGNA station's promised KHOU Avenida Studio in downtown Houston.

Consumer reporter Tiffany Craig performed the first live shot from the new downtown studio where she reported on the Tiger Wrench.

The new satellite studio gets its name from the fact it's located inside the George R. Brown Convention Center and overlooking the newly minted Avenida Houston district. In fact you'll probably catch a glimpse of the famous Jean Dubuffet sculpture Monument au FantΓ΄me behind the anchors on the grounds of Discovery Green.

Complete with wooden looking floors and a nice rug where the anchor desk sits, lights, cameras with teleprompters - the studio opens directly into the GRB's lobby where you will notice a nice KHOU 11 mural. No expo will be safe from KHOU's cameras from now on.

Now this is not the station's new home after Hurricane Harvey's destruction. The new KHOU main studios will be 5718 Westheimer coming later this year. Currently the KHOU staff is working from the studios of Houston Public Media's KUHT TV8.

The KHOU Avenida Studio is a roughly 780-square-feet expansion studio the Houston CBS affiliate announced last December. It's small and only holds around eight or nine people according to Craig's Facebook Live from the scene.

In a KHOU announcement about the new studio from 2017, the station said the new studio would be used several times a week on its newscasts, Great Day Houston and other KHOU-produced programming and specials.

I have to wonder if we'll see the station's newly re-branded morning news "H-Town Rush" broadcasting from downtown just like sister station WFAA does from Victory Park in Dallas? If you see a creepy guy in the background behind the anchors being escorted away by police, that will be me. I'm going to try to convince CultureMap's Ken Hoffman to join me if the station doesn't immediately press charges the first time.

The KHOU mural inside the GRB lobby is not the only art the station has brought to its new digs. You will also find the perfect place to take a selfie for Instagram right outside on the street by three newly designed murals. One depicts Houston monuments complete with a KHOU live truck (did not see a representation of Dejero or LiveU units), another a downtown Houston skyline and a third displays a big KHOU 11 Stands for Houston image.

If you don't feel like a Kardashian at the moment, you can simply watch KHOU on an outside monitor. Heck, use that for a selfie later!

It's all conveniently located in walking distance from the Toyota Center and Minute Maid Park with BBVA Compass Stadium not too far away under I-69/HWY 59.

According to the station's original press release, the new studio was slated to open in March of 2018.

UPDATE October 1, 2018

PRESS RELEASE: KHOU Opens New Downtown Avenida Houston Studio

HOUSTON, TX – KHOU, the TEGNA owned CBS affiliate announced today the opening of its new satellite studio on the Avenida Houston Plaza. KHOU will use the studio multiple times per week to broadcast across all dayparts, including KHOU 11 News, Great Day Houston and other KHOU-produced programming and specials.

“Thanks to our partnership with Houston First, KHOU is now the only local station with a dedicated studio in the heart of downtown Houston. Our Avenida Studio allows us to better serve our audience with original, innovative and entertaining content,” said Susan McEldoon president and GM, KHOU. “We will be right in the thick of the action when the Astros and Rockets play their home games, plus we’ll have easy access to cover all of the great programs and events at Discovery Green Park.”

At roughly 780-square-feet, the KHOU Avenida Studio is situated across from what are some of the most scenic views in the convention district. The new studio will have the flexibility to open on to the plaza, enabling anchors and reporters to directly engage with the public and be at the center of major events happening in downtown Houston.

“When Houston First developed Avenida Houston, the vision was to create an area that would serve as the center of entertainment in downtown,” said Brenda Bazan president and CEO, Houston First. “The heart of the campus is the Avenida Plaza, which in addition to dining, nightlife and inspiring art installations, is now home to KHOU’s Avenida Studio. We could not be more excited.”

KHOU’s Avenida Studio also showcases murals by local artists Lauren Luna and Jose Arredondo, aka Meenr_One. The murals can be found on the front windows of the studio and on the interior walls of the George R. Brown Convention Center.

KHOU 11 appears ready for its new home

Much has been written on this very blog about KHOU 11's studios being flooded by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. I've tried to follow the story for you as details came available.

KHOU 11 news director Sally Ramirez lets us know that the TEGNA station is about to open its new studio located at 5718 Westheimer near Houston's Uptown district with a new video.

Like when I covered KPRC 2's new building, TEGNA corporate has promised to let me in the new KHOU studios! Stay tuned.

KBMT Beaumont broadcasting from KHOU due to flooding

KBMT Beaumont has evacuated its studios due to Imelda's flooding and is now broadcasting from a station that understands the need all too well.

The 12 News staff has re-located to Houston at the new studios of TEGNA sister station KHOU 11.

KBMT reports all of its employees are safe.

"KHOU11 is simulcasting for our sister station in Beaumont as its crews evacuate," tweeted channel 11 anhcor Brandi Smith. "It's a situation we are all too familiar with here. Our hearts are with our colleagues in Beaumont, as well as the residents there who are impacted by severe floodings."

If you were reading my blog in 2017, then you know that KHOU evacuated its former building thanks to Hurricane Harvey.

KHOU 11 behind the scenes 2021 vs 1968

Brandi Smith

KHOU 11 anchor Brandi Smith takes us on a behind the scenes tour of her morning routine during the #HTownRush newscast.

TV newsers might recognize her use of Tagboard, but what I didn't know is that channel 11 used PowerPoint to power their monitors behind the reporters!

Now, let's juxtapose Smith's look to news director Dick John's behind the scenes look from 1968!

Clearly lots has changed in 53 years including the fact that KHOU had to move from its 1945 Allen Parkway address to the post Hurricane Harvey 5718 Westheimer studio.

KHOU 11 demolition photos

Decades of Houston television memories torn down after Hurricane Harvey's wrath

UPDATE
KHOU property on Allen Parkway being sold to SCI entity

This week, the old KHOU 11 studios on 1945 Allen Parkway were getting demolished. The TEGNA owned station sold the property earlier this year.

I headed down to the location that is on the edge of Midtown/Montrose, in the shadow of downtown Houston, to snap the photos you see here.

You will notice evidence of the Belo-owned days still exists with the painted "Spirit of Texas" slogan fading away on the now collapsed roof.

There I met nearly 30 year area resident Laura Conely who referred to her famous neighbor as a beacon in the neighborhood.

"It's very sad to see them gone," Conely told mikemcguff.com. "Channel 11 has been such a great neighbor for all of us and it's a landmark. It's bizarre to think of it not being here anymore."

Conely told me something I never knew.

Technically the longtime KHOU studios are located in the Temple Terrace neighborhood. While the station is famous for facing the very heavily trafficked Allen Parkway, the backside of the station is a different story. A quick walk around the property shows a mix of quaint older houses mixed with modern condos.

"The on air personalities felt like they were our neighbors too," Conely added. "A lot of them lived in the neighborhood and got their hair cut in the neighborhood so over the decades they were really apart of our community."

Never ahead of Hurricane Harvey, did I think months later I'd be photographing the demolition of the storied CBS affiliate studios.

In fact, I was one of the hubris-filled native Houstonians that was telling my kids, this hurricane probably won't be a big deal.

We were all in for a rude awakening by Sunday, August 27, 2017 as the water poured in.

Channel 11 viewers saw it first hand as KHOU personnel were forced to evacuate. I couldn't believe that I was live blogging about the station moving the studios to its second floor and then quickly updating that post to say the station staff was leaving and temporarily shutting down its transmission.

- VIDEO: Summary of KHOU 11 studio flooding Harvey
- VIDEO: How WFAA in Dallas helped out KHOU and Houston
- Brandi Smith and the viral media storm

The TEGNA owned station utilized its good relationship with Houston Public Media KUHT TV8 to move into the PBS affiliate's studio where it still operates today until it can eventually move to its new studio location on 5718 Westheimer.

I'm told the new location will consist of 43,000 square feet of space and occupy three floors. That space will include two studios, two control rooms, an open collaboration space for all content producing departments, technical operations, sales and executive offices. The move is expected to happen in early 2019.

According to Wikipedia, KHOU moved from its original Galveston location to the Allen Parkway studios in April 24, 1960.

Most people have heard how former CBS News anchor Dan Rather passed through the halls, but so did other network notables like Jim Nantz, Linda Ellerbee, Jessica Savitch and Ron Franklin.

Once moved in to its new spot, KHOU will join most of the other Houston TV stations on the southwest side of town. However, it will eventually open satellite studios on the east side of downtown Houston. (UPDATE: I'm told that new downtown studio could open mid to late summer 2018).

Conely says she will miss those iconic red K-H-O-U letters that adorned the station's big tower displaying some of the coolest call letters for a Houston station.

She'll especially miss them around the holidays.

"At Christmas for years and years, they would block out the letters so it would just say H-O, H-O, so it would flash Ho, Ho, Ho," she told me.

Conely might be happy to know those six-by-six foot letters have been saved and could make a return at the new location.

“We are going to incorporate them, somehow, into our new building," KHOU 11 General Manager, Susan McEldoon, said on the TEGNA owned station's website. "I’m not exactly sure how that’s going to look at this point."

As far as I know, the future of the 1945 Allen Parkway property is unknown at this point.

Conley says her kids were hoping for a park.

We both agreed that probably won't happen. Even after a catastrophic flood, that property is just too valuable.

It might join lots in rest of the area and become a high-rise or multi-story apartment building. And the famous spot will fade into history just like the past locations of KPRC 2 (Post Oak Boulevard) and abc13 KTRK (Cullen).

KHOU's Brooks and Erica Garner having a Christmas baby

UPDATE DECEMBER 19, 2018
The Brooks Garner baby is here

KHOU 11 meteorologist Brooks Garner and his wife, Erica, are having an actual baby gift this Christmas

KHOU 11 noon and 4pm meteorologist Brooks Garner and his wife, Erica, are having a baby in time for the holidays!

"Erica and I are absolutely thrilled and feel so lucky and thankful," Garner told mikemcguff.com. "With a Christmas baby on the way it really will be, 'the most wonderful time of the year' (to quote the famous Andy Williams holiday classic)!"

Garner says Erica's friends and work colleagues had their suspicions beforehand, so it's fun to finally be able to share the big news.

"Friends have teased us about having a baby and the prospect of getting very little sleep (with midnight diaper changes and feedings), but we laugh and remind them that both of us have worked in TV news and know how to operate on all cylinders at all hours, for months on end," Garner added.

And Garner might be able to head to the hospital on delivery day cruising on his skateboard as you can see in the above embedded video.

"It’s how I got around Boston in my college days, but I’ve been doing it since I was 9," Garner told me. "For me, it was faster than public transit and more fun than walking. As unfortunate as it was to lose our Allen Parkway studios in the Harvey floods, a perk of being in these temporary studios at UH is that you can’t help but pick up on the fun, energetic vibes of a college campus. That excitement is not only translating into our newscasts, but I found that it was only natural for me to dust off the long board as a way to get across campus to grab lunch."

And the new University of Houston student union building has plenty of food options. I walked in there after all of the construction and was impressed by the new complex.

Garner is also excited about the move to KHOU 11's new 5718 Westheimer building and channel 11's soon to be open George R. Brown Convention Center AKA The GRB venida Houston district satellite studio.

"My skateboard video was just one very modest example of how KHOU is really breaking through the mold of an industry which largely has stood behind the glittery walls of smoke, mirrors, establishment and emptiness," Garner added. "We want to make local news more relevant for our time, and have opened our arms wide to offer a new generation a voice, in hopes they join the conversation — one which can affect real change in a community — and one which allows folks to participate in our hard-fought democracy in a way they might not otherwise be able without a free press. It all starts with KHOU being real and sharing our passion and ourselves."

TELL BROOKS AND ERICA CONGRATULATIONS!

KTRK abc13 tower gets lit

If you are driving down the Southwest Freeway/Highway 59/I-69 you might see a glowing 13 back in the air again to the south

I am happy to report that the "13" on the abc13 KTRK studio tower is back on again after many, many years.

What can I say, I am a total sucker for TV studio tower decorations.

Used to love the KHOU call letters on the Allen Parkway studios tower. Didn't the station use to alter them at Christmas time to highlight the HO part to blink ho, ho, ho? Glad they could reuse those in the 5718 Westheimer location.

Wednesday night, KTRK employees had a celebration where station general manager Wendy Granato and Dave Ward flipped the lights on once again on live TV.

The station doesn't give an explanation on its website as to why the lights were off in the first place for I would believe more than a decade. From what I hear, when they turned them back on in the 2000s, there was some kind of interference by the lights. Can't have that at a TV station.

Most likely the new lights are LEDs and probably don't have the same issue. LED lights have been great for TV stations and video production in general! Smaller, less expensive to light a studio or location and certainly nowhere near as hot. Remember when TV lights might catch a gel on fire?

You know me, these days everything relates back to KLOL in some way for my documentary so donate today! From what I understand, the KLOL studio tower did not have any decorations.

UPDATE
Tim Hinson, who is the Vice President, Broadcast Technology/Chief Engineer for KTRK, reached out to me and said about the lights:

"They are indeed LED! The old neon signs burned out just over 20 years ago and just recently we went all LED with almost every interior and exterior light at the station. The timing worked out great to coincide with our 65th anniversary and it’s a great source of pride for those of us who work at ABC 13. Thanks for sharing."

Thank you Tim for the update!

Chris Henao joins KHOU 11 as assistant news director

KSAT 12 San Antonio assistant news director Chris Henao joins KHOU 11 in the same position

KHOU 11's news assistant news director Chris Henao is a familiar name for some in the hallways of the now TEGNA owned station. For almost a decade, back in the Belo days, Henao helped bring a ton of awards to the station, including a Peabody Award, as an investigative photographer and then producer in the Anna Werner days and beyond to the Jeremy Rogalski era.
"I'm very excited to be coming home to KHOU and Houston," Henao told mikemcguff.com. "Excited for all the new possibilities at the new KHOU."

When Henao left the station more than a decade ago, it was still at the Allen Parkway location, so it will be a new world for him at 5718 Westheimer.

"Chris Henao worked at KHOU from the late 1990s through the late 2000s as an Investigative Photojournalist and Producer," Robert Springer, KHOU President and General Manager, told mikemcguff.com. "Chris’ knowledge of Houston and his experiences around the country will be a tremendous addition to an already-strong leadership team in news."

In the last five years, he has been the assistant news director to one of San Antonio's top rated stations, KSAT 12 (sister-station to KPRC).

In between KHOU and KSAT, Henao worked as the executive producer for investigations for KCTV 5 News in Kansas City, Missouri. He then went on to work for almost three years as an investigative producer for KNBC in Los Angeles.

Before his time at channel 11 in Houston, the University of Texas grad worked as a photojournalist for WXIA Atlanta, KXAN Austin and KGBT Harlingen.

Henao starts at KHOU July 15th.

He takes over for Josh Hubbard who left for KGO San Francisco.

KHOU 11 buys KTBU 55

UPDATE MARCH 27, 2020

TEGNA takes over KTBU 55

KHOU 11's owner TEGNA, just bought KTBU 55 from Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) for $15 million

TEGNA, owner of KHOU 11 in Houston, has bought channel 55 KTBU for $15 million.

A new Houston duopoly is born.

This is making big news in the radio trade world because current KTBU owner, Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS), is really more of a radio company and are reportedly selling off unrelated assets to pay off debt. Looking at my old post, SBS paid $16 million for KTBU around nine years ago.

Since 2011, KTBU has been Spanish language network Mega TV. Now that SBS is selling the station, one would assume the Mega network it runs leaves with it, but you never know, maybe TEGNA will keep it.

More likely, TEGNA will program its other offerings on it.

For example, it owns multicast programming like Justice Network and Quest. Will these shows stay on the KHOU digital sub-channels or go to KTBU? Who knows?

Will KTBU re-air KHOU newscasts like #HTownRush or maybe its own shows like Great Day Houston mixed in with syndicated fare? Once again, who knows right now?

This will not the first Houston duopoly or one owner owning multiple stations.

Houston TV already has:

Fox Television Stations Incorporated
KRIV FOX
KTXH My20

Univision
KXLN‐DT UNI
KFTH‐DT UnM

So how can one company own multiple television stations in one city?

Let's go straight to the TEGNA-KTBU deal's FCC filing where attorney's say:

The Transaction complies with the Commission’s local television multiple ownership rule, as reinstated by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit effective as of November 29, 2019. The rule allows ownership of two television stations in the same DMA that have overlapping contours so long as (1) at least one of the stations is ranked below the top four stations in the market, based on the most recent all-day audience share measured by professional, accepted audience ratings services,2
and (2) “[a]t least 8 independently owned and operating, full-power commercial and noncommercial TV stations would remain post-merger in the DMA in which the communities of license of the TV stations in question are located.”
The Transaction meets this requirement because, in Nielsen’s December 2019 survey, KTBU placed below the top four stations in all-day household share,4 and after consummation of the proposed Transaction there would remain more than eight independently owned and operating full-power commercial and noncommercial television stations in the Houston DMA.5
Furthermore, because TEGNA has no attributable interest in any radio station or newspaper in the Houston DMA, the Commission’s local media ownership rules governing local radio ownership, radio-television cross-ownership, and newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership are not implicated by the Transaction.
Finally, because TEGNA already owns KHOU, a VHF station located in the Houston DMA, TEGNA’s acquisition of KTBU (a UHF station) would have no effect on TEGNA’s national television audience reach.6 Accordingly, grant of the instant license assignment application would comply with the Commission’s media ownership rules.

Still awake? I'm not. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Now some Houston TV watchers might remember when KTBU 55 was "The Tube" and owned by Pastor Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church. Or maybe the actual church owned it, not sure. Lakewood sold KTBU in 2006 to USFR Media Group.

In 2007, USFR Media Group moved KTBU to the old News 24 Houston facility on Beltway 8.

I would assume that TEGNA moves KTBU in with channel 11 at its new digs at 5718 Westheimer. Now both staffs can run across the street for a Pappas Burger run.

Stay tuned.
