Brett Anthony joins KYTX CBS19

Meteorologist Brett Anthony joins KYTX CBS19 Tyler-Longview as chief meteorologist from weekends at KCTV Kansas City

Brett Anthony is heading down to Texas to be the chief meteorologist for KYTX CBS19 Tyler-Longview.

He's been the weekend meteorologist at KCTV5 - KSMO in Kansas City since 2017.

At the time of this post's publishing, Anthony has not officially left KCTV5 for the Piney Woods as he was still on the air in KC yesterday as you can see in the above video.

Still time for a last barbecue meal?

KYTX CBS19 is excited to have Anthony and his nearly 30 years of weather experience, as his bio is already online on the East Texas news website.

Before KCTV5, Anthony worked for KJRH 2 Tulsa as the station's chief meteorologist for for years. Jay Cronley at Tulsa World even wrote a glowing profile of Anthony and his forecasting accountable.

Prior to Oklahoma, Anthony worked at KCTV's Kansas City competitor KSHB for 11 years.

The first TV job listed on Anthony's LinkedIn profile is as weekend met for WOIO - WUAB Cleveland, Ohio.

The two-time regional Emmy award winner has a meteorology degree from Western Kentucky University and a radio-TV degree from Southern Illinois University.

Stevie Stephenson joins KCTV First Warn 5 Weather Team

Stevie Stephenson joined the KCTV Kansas City, Kansas First Warn 5 Weather Team from Gray Media sister station KBTX 3 Bryan-College Station in June 2025.

Stephenson joined the KBTX BCS First Alert Weather Team in May 2024.

The Texas A&M University grad with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology in 2024, interned with KBTX starting in 2022.

While in school, she served as president of the Texas A&M Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society and as coordinator of the Texas A&M Weather Broadcasting Team.

News 4 San Antonio WOAI morning and midday newscast anchor Alexis Del Cid announced she's leaving the station Thursday, August 12, 2021 to move to the Midwest to take care of her father.

"My dad being diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease has been a life-changing catalyst. It brought my priorities into laser focus. Our time here is not guaranteed. There are no promises. You never know when the people you love most will be taken from you.
With this diagnosis- it also hit me like a lightning bolt realizing - I only have four more years with our son before he goes to college. Where did the years go!? I want to be awake for all of it. I need to be present for all of it. I want to be there for the important events and school nights and talks and dinners - and the mundane things as well, that add up to the big stuff in our lives. I want to give him the gift my dad (and my amazing mom) gave me -- and it's tough to do that when my life has revolved around my career and waking up at 2AM for so many years.
All this is why it's time for me to take a step back from my news career, and spend as much time as possible with my family and caring for my family.
We have been so incredibly blessed to live in San Antonio. We thought we would be here a lot longer! But when life pitches a curve ball - you keep playing the game. (I was looking for a better sports analogy, but I'll leave that to my amazing co-anchor, David Chancellor!)
If there's one thing I'm going to be thankful for the rest of my life - it's that I am able to close-out my news career at an incredible station, with beautiful teammates who are now my lifelong friends, on an awesome show, in the most unique and spectacular city that I will miss with my whole heart! That’s a pretty good note to end things on -- and a beautiful note on which to start a new adventure.
Speaking of new adventures - another big change is that we are also moving back to the Midwest. I need to get my mom and dad closer to some key resources and networks of support that it looks like we will need to care for my father as the Alzheimer's progresses.
I could not me more grateful for the support from my work family and my bosses at News4. I was so nervous to tell them my decision. I didn't need to be. They are wonderful and understand family is everything.
I don't know what I'll be doing for a career next, but I know as long as I'm with my family it will be okay.
On another note- I plan to continue using this forum to share my family's Alzheimer's journey and our other journeys! I pray one day we find a cure for this wicked disease. Until then my plan is to keep making connections and sharing with others who are feeling sad, lonely or just plain lost- for whatever reason. If we can't use our time here on Earth to make connections and share- then what's the point of any of this, right?"

Chris Henao exits KHOU 11 from Assistant ND role

Chris Henao, who had served as KHOU 11's assistant news director since 2019, announced on social media that he was laid off from the TEGNA-owned station last week.

UPDATE: I have heard that Wiley Post, who joined KHOU in 2017 as an assistant news director and executive producer, is now serving as the assistant news director.

Here is a portion of what Henao said on Linkedin (with his permission to post here):

"Well, I'm choosing to see this as a blessing in disguise - an opportunity to embrace new challenges, step outside my comfort zone, and continue growing! Leaving behind an amazing newsroom full of talented journalists and friends is bittersweet, for sure.

On my last day at work, I felt nothing but appreciation, gratitude and support from everyone on my team. It filled my heart and fueled my drive with passion and purpose as I look for the next step in my career.

Will the next chapter be as a journalist? I'm not 100 percent sure right now.

If this marks the end of my 34 years in news, I will forever treasure every moment - so many stories, memories, friendships and accomplishments!

To all who have recently received the notice that you are being laidoff - you are not alone.

Henao’s 34-year career in journalism has earned him prestigious honors, including duPont-Columbia, Peabody, Polk, IRE, RTDNA Murrow, Scripps Howard, and EMMY awards.

His tenure at KHOU was a homecoming, having previously worked at the station under former owner Belo. During that time, he served as an investigative photographer and later a producer, spanning from the Anna Werner era to the Jeremy Rogalski years.

Before his return to KHOU, Henao served as assistant news director at KSAT 12 in San Antonio, a Graham Media Group sister station to Channel 11's cross-town rival, KPRC 2 in Houston.

Between his stints at KHOU, he worked as an executive producer for investigations at KCTV 5 News in Kansas City, Missouri, and later spent nearly three years as an investigative producer for KNBC in Los Angeles.

A University of Texas graduate, Henao began his career as a photojournalist at WXIA Atlanta, KXAN Austin, and KGBT Harlingen.

Marcel Clarke joins ABC-7 KVIA El Paso

Marcel Clarke returns home to ABC-7 KVIA El Paso, a TV market where she previously worked, to anchor weekday evening newscasts alongside Paul Cicala.

“I grew up in El Paso," Clarke said in a statement. "My family is located here and in Juarez, and my work has always brought me back home."

Starting Monday, April 7, 2025, on the 5:00, 6:00, and 10:00 p.m. newscasts, the International Baccalaureate graduate of Coronado High School takes over for Stephanie Valle, who left at the end of December 2024.

“The fact that she is from El Paso aligns with ABC-7’s commitment to local journalism that serves our loyal viewers and digital users,” said ABC-7 News Director Sean Flanagan.

Most recently, Clarke served as the Evening National News Anchor for NBCLX from July 2022 to September 2023.

Before that, Clarke held the same role at BNC, where she anchored key news segments from June 2021 to March 2022.

Her career includes a stint at Fox 7 Austin KTBC as an evening news anchor from July 2019 to June 2020, as well as a role at KCTV 5 Kansas City, where she served as a weekend and breaking news anchor from March 2018 to March 2019.

Clarke also spent two years reporting for KVIA's rivals, Sinclair duopoly KFOX14 and CBS4 El Paso.

Her journalism career began at KOMU-TV, where she gained experience as a reporter, anchor, and producer while earning her degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. During her studies, she was actively involved in professional organizations, including the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists, and RTDNA.

Recognized for her impact in journalism, Clarke earned a nomination for the Forbes 30 Under 30 Media List, highlighting her dedication to transparency in the ever-evolving news industry.

Beyond her work in media, Clarke is deeply committed to community service. She volunteers at women’s shelters, advocating for survivors of domestic and sexual assault. Her passion for health and cancer research became even more personal in 2024 when her mother was impacted by ovarian cancer. This experience has strengthened Clarke’s dedication to raising awareness, supporting research, and expanding resources for those battling the disease.

"Marcel will be a fantastic complement to our team," said KVIA General Manager Brenda De Anda-Swann. Kathleen McElroy, a journalist and former editor at The New York Times, has been appointed as the new director for the School of Journalism at The University of Texas at Austin starting June 1. Currently, McElroy is associate director and senior lecturer in UT’s School of Journalism, where she received her Ph.D. in December 2014 after nearly 30 years as a professional journalist. At The New York Times, she held various management positions including associate managing editor, dining editor, deputy sports editor and deputy editor of the website. She previously worked for The National, an all-sports daily; Newsday on Long Island; the Austin American-Statesman; The Huntsville Item; and the Bryan-College Station Eagle. McElroy follows departing director R.B. Brenner, who served as director since 2014. Brenner is returning to Stanford University to teach and lead projects in the journalism program.

Kathy Saunders retires from FOX 4 DFW Dallas

Kathy Saunders, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the FOX-owned duopoly in Dallas (KDFW FOX 4 and KDFI 27) retired at the end of June 2023.

Saunders has been in this role since 1997 and with the FOX Television Stations since 1995.

"It has been my honor and privilege to manage FOX Television Stations from 'fledgling' network status to the dynamic broadcasting company it is today," Saunders said in a statement. "Working for Jack Abernethy was never dull. He is a true leader in the industry who pushes his managers to work and think outside of their comfort zone to produce creative results."

"We would like to thank Kathy for the tremendous job she has done in Dallas for the past 26 years, and as an invaluable veteran of both news and sales for FTS for 28 years," Jack Abernethy, Chief Executive Officer of FOX Television Stations added. "A truly great leader, she leaves a talented team, and decisive as ever, we laughed when she gave us four days notice. We will miss her. We wish Kathy nothing but the best in her retirement."

Saunders spent 26 years as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the FOX-owned duopoly in Dallas, consisting of KDFW FOX 4 and KDFI 27.

Prior to this, she joined the FOX Television Stations as Vice President and General Manager of WFXT FOX 25 Boston.

Saunders started as Vice President and General Sales Manager at KDAF Dallas and was promoted to Vice President and General Manager.

Before that, she began as a National Sales Manager for WPGH Pittsburgh and was later promoted to General Sales Manager.

She began her career in broadcasting as an Account Executive for KCTV Kansas City, MO and holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Journalism from the University of Kansas.

Saunders was named Texas Association of Broadcasters' (TAB) Pioneer Broadcaster of the Year in 2022 and Broadcasting & Cable's General Manager of the Year in 2019.

She is Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, a member of the North Texas Final Four Local Organizing Committee Board of Directors, and member of the Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB). Saunders is on the Board of Directors and Vice President of Resource Development for Girl's Inc., and has held various roles and received many awards from the Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) throughout her illustrious career.

"I have loved watching the Dallas-Fort Worth market grow over the years, along with KDFW FOX 4 and KDFI 27," Saunders said. "Overseeing the development of this group of broadcast professionals has definitely been the highlight of my career. I will miss this wonderful team, but look forward to the next chapter."

An internal and external search will take place for her successor.

Houston and TX TV & radio job moves while I was away...there are lots of them

A roundup of Houston and Texas TV moves and departures since I went on vacation in early July...lot's of action around the state.

Chris McDonald starts at KHOU 11 this week as an assignments editor he confirmed to me. Fox 26 KRIV, McDonald's previous employer where he worked as the assignments desk manager, posted on Facebook in late June that McDonald was taking a news director position in Victoria, TX.

Got word that News92FM reporter Pattie Shieh is leaving KROI and moving on to LyondellBasell.

Larry Giele has joined CBS 11 (KTVT-TV) and TXA 21 (KTXA-TV) as controller. Giele comes to the stations from WKYC in Cleveland, where he held the same position.

Bob French has been Chief Meteorologist and weeknight weather anchor at KBTX since 1990. That appears to be no more. Right before I left on vacation I got a tip he was gone and now his KBTX social media accounts and bio page have been erased. The station reported in May that French was on extended leave to attend to family matters.

SportsRadio 610 KILT hires Nick Wright for mornings

Nick Wright will join John Lopez on SportsRadio 610 KILT mornings starting June 5th.

Wright currently hosts What’s Wright with Nick Wright on KCSP in Kansas City, Mo. In 2011, he was named Best Sports Personality, Best Radio Host, Best Sports Blogger, Best Twitter Follow and Best Sports Show by The Pitch, Kansas City’s weekly newspaper. In addition to his radio show, Wright is a regular TV contributor on KCTV/KSMO in Kansas City.

“We are really excited to welcome Nick to our talented roster of hosts,” said station program director Gavin Spittle. “He has tremendous energy, passion and a history of ratings success. His excitement to pair up with John Lopez is equal to our excitement to add him to our #1 sports lineup for many years to come.”

Wright will be replacing Mark Vandermeer since SportsRadio 610 is expanding Houston Texans programming this upcoming season as part of its new 10-year deal with the Houston Texans. Vandermeer will be taking a lead role in all the Houston Texans programming on SportsRadio 610 including; Texans Monday’s, Tuesday morning Texans Player Show, the new Texans All Access Show and special evening features and shows.

Wright graduated from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University with a degree in broadcast journalism.

Fox4 adds meteorologist Ali Turiano
Dallas-based Fox4 has filled its weekend meteorologist vacancy by hiring Ali Turiano from Orlando-based News13, a cable station servicing the greater Central Florida region.

Chris Henao is KSAT 12 San Antonio's new assistant news director. He comes from KNBC LA where he was the investigative producer or the last two years. His other Texas stops include a role as both a photojournalist and later producer in the KHOU 11 investigative unit. Before that he was a photog at KXAN Austin and KGBT Harlingen in the early 1990s. Outside of Texas he also worked at KCTV and WXIA.

WOAI-TV losing its weatherman

Kathy Saunders, former FOX 4 KDFW GM, has died

Kathy Saunders, the esteemed former Senior Vice President and General Manager of FOX 4 KDFW and KDFI 27 in Dallas-Fort Worth, passed away at her home in California on March 26, 2025. She was a trailblazer in the broadcasting industry, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and excellence.

Saunders dedicated nearly three decades to FOX Television Stations, beginning her tenure in 1995. She served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the FOX-owned duopoly in Dallas for 26 years before retiring in June 2023. Her successor, Jeff Gurley, took the helm following her departure.

Before her influential role in Dallas, Saunders was Vice President and General Manager of FOX 25 WFXT Boston. She previously held leadership positions at KDAF Dallas, where she was Vice President and General Sales Manager before being promoted to Vice President and General Manager. Her career also included roles at WPGH Pittsburgh as National Sales Manager and later General Sales Manager, and she began her broadcasting journey as an Account Executive at KCTV in Kansas City, Missouri.

Saunders earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from the University of Kansas. Her contributions to the industry were widely recognized, including being named Texas Association of Broadcasters' (TAB) Pioneer Broadcaster of the Year in 2022 and Broadcasting & Cable's General Manager of the Year in 2019.

A respected leader beyond broadcasting, Saunders was Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, a member of the North Texas Final Four Local Organizing Committee Board of Directors, and an active figure within the Texas Association of Broadcasters. She also served on the Board of Directors and as Vice President of Resource Development for Girls Inc., in addition to her longstanding support and recognition from the Alliance for Women in Media.

Chris Henao joins KHOU 11 as assistant news director

KSAT 12 San Antonio assistant news director Chris Henao joins KHOU 11 in the same position

KHOU 11's news assistant news director Chris Henao is a familiar name for some in the hallways of the now TEGNA owned station. For almost a decade, back in the Belo days, Henao helped bring a ton of awards to the station, including a Peabody Award, as an investigative photographer and then producer in the Anna Werner days and beyond to the Jeremy Rogalski era.

"I'm very excited to be coming home to KHOU and Houston," Henao told mikemcguff.com. "Excited for all the new possibilities at the new KHOU."

When Henao left the station more than a decade ago, it was still at the Allen Parkway location, so it will be a new world for him at 5718 Westheimer.

"Chris Henao worked at KHOU from the late 1990s through the late 2000s as an Investigative Photojournalist and Producer," Robert Springer, KHOU President and General Manager, told mikemcguff.com. "Chris’ knowledge of Houston and his experiences around the country will be a tremendous addition to an already-strong leadership team in news."

In the last five years, he has been the assistant news director to one of San Antonio's top rated stations, KSAT 12 (sister-station to KPRC).

In between KHOU and KSAT, Henao worked as the executive producer for investigations for KCTV 5 News in Kansas City, Missouri. He then went on to work for almost three years as an investigative producer for KNBC in Los Angeles.

Before his time at channel 11 in Houston, the University of Texas grad worked as a photojournalist for WXIA Atlanta, KXAN Austin and KGBT Harlingen.

Henao starts at KHOU July 15th.

He takes over for Josh Hubbard who left for KGO San Francisco.
