Chris Henao joins KHOU 11 as assistant news director

KSAT 12 San Antonio assistant news director Chris Henao joins KHOU 11 in the same position

KHOU 11's news assistant news director Chris Henao is a familiar name for some in the hallways of the now TEGNA owned station. For almost a decade, back in the Belo days, Henao helped bring a ton of awards to the station, including a Peabody Award, as an investigative photographer and then producer in the Anna Werner days and beyond to the Jeremy Rogalski era.

"I'm very excited to be coming home to KHOU and Houston," Henao told mikemcguff.com. "Excited for all the new possibilities at the new KHOU."

When Henao left the station more than a decade ago, it was still at the Allen Parkway location, so it will be a new world for him at 5718 Westheimer.

"Chris Henao worked at KHOU from the late 1990s through the late 2000s as an Investigative Photojournalist and Producer," Robert Springer, KHOU President and General Manager, told mikemcguff.com. "Chris’ knowledge of Houston and his experiences around the country will be a tremendous addition to an already-strong leadership team in news."

In the last five years, he has been the assistant news director to one of San Antonio's top rated stations, KSAT 12 (sister-station to KPRC).

In between KHOU and KSAT, Henao worked as the executive producer for investigations for KCTV 5 News in Kansas City, Missouri. He then went on to work for almost three years as an investigative producer for KNBC in Los Angeles.

Before his time at channel 11 in Houston, the University of Texas grad worked as a photojournalist for WXIA Atlanta, KXAN Austin and KGBT Harlingen.

Henao starts at KHOU July 15th.

He takes over for Josh Hubbard who left for KGO San Francisco.

Chris Henao exits KHOU 11 from Assistant ND role

Chris Henao, who had served as KHOU 11's assistant news director since 2019, announced on social media that he was laid off from the TEGNA-owned station last week.

UPDATE: I have heard that Wiley Post, who joined KHOU in 2017 as an assistant news director and executive producer, is now serving as the assistant news director.

Here is a portion of what Henao said on Linkedin (with his permission to post here):

"Well, I'm choosing to see this as a blessing in disguise - an opportunity to embrace new challenges, step outside my comfort zone, and continue growing! Leaving behind an amazing newsroom full of talented journalists and friends is bittersweet, for sure.

On my last day at work, I felt nothing but appreciation, gratitude and support from everyone on my team. It filled my heart and fueled my drive with passion and purpose as I look for the next step in my career.

Will the next chapter be as a journalist? I'm not 100 percent sure right now.

If this marks the end of my 34 years in news, I will forever treasure every moment - so many stories, memories, friendships and accomplishments!

To all who have recently received the notice that you are being laidoff - you are not alone.

I am here to support you in any and every way possible. Let's keep moving forward with resilience, optimism and the belief that something great is ahead!"

Henao’s 34-year career in journalism has earned him prestigious honors, including duPont-Columbia, Peabody, Polk, IRE, RTDNA Murrow, Scripps Howard, and EMMY awards.

His tenure at KHOU was a homecoming, having previously worked at the station under former owner Belo. During that time, he served as an investigative photographer and later a producer, spanning from the Anna Werner era to the Jeremy Rogalski years.

Before his return to KHOU, Henao served as assistant news director at KSAT 12 in San Antonio, a Graham Media Group sister station to Channel 11's cross-town rival, KPRC 2 in Houston.

Between his stints at KHOU, he worked as an executive producer for investigations at KCTV 5 News in Kansas City, Missouri, and later spent nearly three years as an investigative producer for KNBC in Los Angeles.

A University of Texas graduate, Henao began his career as a photojournalist at WXIA Atlanta, KXAN Austin, and KGBT Harlingen.

KHOU 11 does it again

KHOU 11 in Houston just won the prestigious IRE Medal award. That's as high as it gets in this contest:

Under Fire: Discrimination & Corruption in the Texas National Guard — KHOU-Houston; Mark Greenblatt, David Raziq, Keith Tomshe, Chris Henao, Robyn Hughes, Keith Connors
- Judges' comments: No system can be more impenetrable for a team of reporters than the military "old boys" network, but that's exactly what reporter Mark Greenblatt and producers David Raziq and Chris Henao took on when they followed up on a tip to check out the "Vagisil Award" being given to women in the Texas National Guard. From that one tip, the team – which also included photographer/editor Keith Tomshe and graphic artist Robyn Hughes – found a system of misogynistic actions that went beyond humiliation. In some cases, female officers were being disciplined or even discharged despite exemplary service records. Data and documents gathered by the team showed a systematic refusal to consider women for top posts, and swift punishment for any who complained about the male power structure. In the end, this two-year investigation resulted in the Texas governor firing three top generals in the Texas National Guard and the state legislature changing the way it oversees Texas Guard operations.

Chris Henao joins KHOU 11 as assistant news director

KHOU 11 assistant news director Josh Hubbard is leaving Houston for the same job with Disney/ABC Television Group owned KGO San Franciso (sister station to KTRK abc13).

"Happy but also sad news," Hubbard tweeted. "I’m leaving ⁦@KHOU⁩ in June to join the amazing team in San Francisco ⁦@abc7newsbayarea⁩. We’ve been through so much together in Houston, covering every story imaginable. I’m excited for the future, but sad to say goodbye."

The 2005 Syracuse grad started at channel 11 in September 2015.

Prior to Houston, Hubbard served as an executive producer at KUSA Denver and before that at KCRA Sacramento, CA. He was also a producer for WPTZ Plattsburgh, NY and WSTM Syracuse, NY.

"I’m losing my awesome partner @JhubbsKHOU11 😭," KHOU news director Sally Ramirez tweeted. "He’s headed to San Francisco! @abc7newsbayarea you’re lucky to get him! Now I need a new #2! Josh, can you vouch for me?! #journalismjobs I’ll post a job link soon!"

Keep The Resume Handy. Ramierz's mention of the job post made me think of what 740 KTRH journalists back in the day used to say about what their station call letters really meant! That acronym probably still works today for any station. Be ready for when your dream TV job opens up.

Anna Werner Joins Gray’s InvestigateTV

Anna Werner joins InvestigateTV, Gray’s national investigative unit, effective August 18, 2025, Gray Media announced today.

“Gray has demonstrated a long-term, nationwide commitment to producing meaningful stories that change laws and lives,” Werner said. "I cannot wait to join forces with this amazing team of national and local investigators and look forward to working together to expose problems that, without dedicated reporting, often go unaddressed."

Werner brings more than 25 years of investigative experience and a distinguished career, covering consumer protection, reporting on corporate misconduct, and exposing systemic failures, most recently as National Senior Consumer Investigative Correspondent at CBS News, based in New York.

“Anna has led investigations that resulted in the nation’s largest tire recall, the shutting down of a major transplant program, sweeping reforms of a metropolitan crime lab, and ending sales of a medical device causing thousands harm,” Gray’s Senior Vice President of News Strategy and Innovation Lee Zurik said. “She is the perfect addition to the InvestigateTV team’s core strength of solutions-based journalism that makes a tangible difference in the lives of our viewers.”

Werner rose to national prominence while reporting for KHOU 11 in Houston, where she worked alongside investigative producer David Raziq (now with WPXI in Pittsburgh) and photojournalist Chris Henao (former assistant news director at KHOU). Their investigation into defective Firestone tires on Ford Explorers led to the largest tire recall in U.S. history. The issue was initially spotlighted by KPRC 2 Houston following the tragic death of ABC13/KTRK reporter Stephen Gauvain.

At KHOU, Werner and her team also exposed widespread errors within the Houston Police Department's crime lab, leading to reforms.

She joined KPIX 5 San Francisco in 2004, a CBS owned-and-operated station, before moving to CBS News in 2011. She became the network’s lead consumer investigative correspondent in 2019.

Werner’s work has received dozens of awards, including 33 Emmy Awards, six RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards, four Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Awards, three Investigative Reporters and Editors Awards, two George Foster Peabody Awards and two duPont-Columbia Awards. She is known for her collaboration with top-tier media partners, including PBS NewsHour, NPR, ABC affiliates, and KFF Health News.

“Anna has a long and proven track record of impactful investigative journalism that gets results. We are thrilled to add an investigator of her caliber to our team and are confident her contributions to InvestigateTV will provide our viewers with even more real solutions,” Gray’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Sandy Breland, said.

InvestigateTV reporting is featured weekdays on InvestigateTV+, a half-hour weekday news magazine, on Saturdays and Sundays on InvestigateTV+ Weekend, and on all InvestigateTV streaming platforms. In her new role, Anna will also host a new streaming show.

InvestigateTV recently reported on various issues, including aviation safety concerns, the sale of potentially dangerous products online, and lagging rural broadband internet service. The team has received numerous national awards, including a duPont-Columbia Award, IRE Award, national Edward R. Murrow Award, and NAB Service to America Award.
