If you see what appears to be a young Art Rascon on NBC News, you are not seeing things, it is his son Jacob Rascon.
"He's been a great mentor and a better dad, never pushing me to follow in his footsteps, but when I decided to try it out, he was right there with endless advice and encouragement," Jacob Rascon told mikemcguff.com in the past.
Then a week ago, my old post about Jacob started moving up the charts to be the number one post on this blog as of this writing. That's because Jacob is now an NBC correspondent...at least temporarily as he tweeted (see embedded below).
Art Rascon
Jacob follows in Art's national correspondent footsteps. Before KTRK, the elder Rascon was a CBS correspondent. As Art told me in the past, he is excited about his son's career.
"He's a solid journalist, has a bright future, and as a father I couldn't be more proud," Art Rascon told mikemcguff.com a few years ago. "I look forward to continuing our near daily conversations about his journalistic adventures."
It was apparent Jacob had his old man's reporting chops early on. It really is like watching a younger Art in terms of appearance, speaking manner and storytelling.
And don't think Art's national days are in the past. As I just recently blogged, a few weeks ago, Art filed a report for ABC News' This Week.
And just like his father before him, Jacob Rascon is now California bound. That's right, the younger Rascon hasn't been reporting a year yet for KFOX and he's already landed a gig in television market number 2 at KNBC 4 Los Angeles. (Former KHOU anchor Lucy Noland left for KNBC too).
"We love El Paso and didn't expect to leave so soon," Jacob Rascon told mikemcguff.com. "But my family and I are thrilled about this opportunity."
As I blogged before, Rascon showed up in El Paso ready for the big time. Back then, I wrote Rascon looked like a clone of his father in appearance and reporting style. A reader commented the term "Ras-clone." Clever.
Jacob will work as an Inland Empire bureau reporter for the station. (Former KHOU 11 and KIAH 39 reporter Leticia Juarez left Houston to cover the Inland Empire for KABC.) He tells me this is an MMJ position (aka one man band) but he will probably have a photographer some of the time.
Rascon's are no strangers to TV audiences in the Inland Empire or Los Angeles in general. Jacob tells me his uncle Dan Rascon worked as an Inland Empire reporter for KNBC in the past (Dan is now at KUTV). Before Jacob's father, Art, worked for CBS News as a network correspondent and eventually KTRK 13, he worked for KABC.
As for Art, he is naturally very proud of his son's accomplishments.
"My wife Patti and I are thrilled for Jacob and his family," Art Rascon told mikemcguff.com. "This is a terrific, and I might add a challenging opportunity for him. Having worked at ABC in Los Angles, I know well the shark tank he is diving into.
"He's a solid journalist, has a bright future, and as a father I couldn't be more proud. I look forward to continuing our near daily conversations about his journalistic adventures."
Above is Jacob Rascon's latest KFOX demo reel for your viewing pleasure. Congrats on the new gig.
Art Rascon, the longtime anchor of Live at 5 and the abc13 KTRK 11am newscast with Melanie Lawson, has announced he is leaving the Disney owned television station at the end of the year after around 36 years in the TV news business.
Sources tell mikemcguff.com that this is Rascon's decision, and he is ready to move on to new things. Plus, he will now have more time to serve the Houston community.
International reporting at abc13
Rascon, who has been with channel 13 since September of 1998, is known for his international reporting (which has taken him to more than 70 countries), just as much as his daily anchoring. In fact, I would venture to say that Rascon enjoyed reporting more than sitting behind the anchor desk everyday.
“I remember watching the close of the Vietnam War on television," Rascon told Y Magazine in 2016. "We only had three channels and we had the rabbit ears on the television. I had to sit there and hold them for my dad so he could watch the television [and] it didn’t break up. I remember telling myself, ‘I think I want to be one of these guys.’ I had such a curiosity of the world—I wanted to report on it and see the faces and recognize more fully these stories.”
You couldn't mention Rascon's career without talking about his coverage of the wars in such places as Iraq, other parts of the Middle East and Central America. When 9/11 happened, Rascon and a photographer were on the road to report live from Ground Zero at the World Trade Center site.
Houston is a big market, but most anchors aren't jumping on planes at the signs of strife occur somewhere around the globe like Rascon. I always thought the need to be reporting in what most journalists would consider "dangerous situations" is in his blood. While one anchor might be reporting on the latest diet trends for the sweeps ratings months, Rascon could be doing a story that resulted in him being detained by soldiers while in another country. In fact, Rascon found himself facing down a barrel of a gun numerous time in his career.
“I’ve had four machine guns pulled on my head, but in each case, I have felt an overwhelming sense of calm and assurance that everything is going to be okay," Rascon told Y Magazine. "What calms my heart more than anything else is prayer and a knowledge of God’s love, not only for the people I’m covering, but for me to be guided as well. We’re in the heat of a battle, but I have never felt nervous for my life.”
In addition to reporting from battlefields, Rascon has covered hurricanes such as Katrina and Ike all the way to the tsunami in Indonesia. In one report a couple of decades ago, he smuggled himself into the country.
Rascon as a CBS News Correspondent
How does a Houston TV anchor know how to report from hotspots around the world?
In Rascon's case, he learned at the network level. Before joining channel 13, he was a CBS News correspondent. According to his bio, at the network, Rascon covered such stories as the Oklahoma City bombing, civil unrest in Haiti, guerrilla wars in Mexico, and a hostage standoff in Peru.
Rascon's earlier career at KABC LA and Texas TV stations
Prior to CBS News, Rascon was a reporter for KTRK's Los Angeles sister-station KABC ABC7 from 1989 to 1994. In LA, Rascon covered everything from the O.J. Simpson trial, the Rodney King trial, the Menendez trial, earthquakes, riots to travelling to cover the Branch Davidian stand-off near Waco.
Speaking of Texas, the El Paso native, reported for several television stations in the Lone Star State before heading to California:
- KMOL 4 (which today is known as News 4 San Antonio WOAI)
- KVIA El Paso
- KRBC Abilene
Rascon's awards and recognitions
Reporting from five continents has earned Rascon 27 EMMY nominations with 20 wins. And according to his bio, he also earned two Edward R. Murrow awards, three National Association of Hispanic Journalists' awards, the International Rotary Club award, two Headliner Awards, the RTNDA Award, 15 Associated Press Reporting awards, and more than a dozen outstanding reporting awards from Press Clubs in Los Angeles, Miami, and Houston. He was also named "100 most influential Hispanics in America" by the National Hispanic Business Magazine.
“I practically flunked out of English. I was not a good reader," Rascon told Y Magazine. "I was not a good speaker. I certainly couldn’t carry a story. I was not a good writer at all. My English instructor in high school said, ‘You need to find something you can actually do. You can’t do this.’ Everything that you think a reporter should be, I was the opposite. But now I’ve won Emmys in writing. I attribute my success to understanding that God is going to make much more out of my life than I could ever possibly make of myself.”
Personal life outside of TV
Journalism flows through Rascon's family. Houston TV viewers know his son Jacob Rascon from his time at KPRC and NBC News, but his brother Dan and son Matt also both work at KSL in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Outside of broadcasting, Rascon and his wife, Patti Rascon, have raised seven children.
The Brigham Young University graduate is also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In April 4, 2020, Rascon was sustained as an Area Seventy for the church. He serves 12 states.
“The Spirit has influenced my work in every degree imaginable, from saving my life to pointing me in directions that would provide safety and reassurance," Rascon told Y Magazine.
abc13 KTRK Houston on-air staffer departures in last year (since September 2020) :
Just the other day I posted that two KFOX 14 El Paso reporters moved on. A day later, I noticed one of the replacements had a very familiar name for those who watch Houston TV News.
Jacob Rascon is one of the newest reporter at KFOX 14. Obviously I thought this has to be KTRK 13 anchor Art Rascon's son. While it does not say that in Jacob's online station bio, his life story read that he is indeed the son of Art:
Before KFOX-14 I was with ABC in the Middle East, covering the Egyptian Revolution from Cairo, as well as conflicts in Israel and surrounding Arab countries from Jerusalem. It was during that time that I truly began to appreciate the value of a free press. I observed the people of Egypt and Tunisia suffer without it and demand it before almost any other freedom as soon as their dictator presidents fell.
Yep, sounds like an Art Rascon offspring. Turns out it is true.
"Yes that's my dad," Jacob told the mikemcguff.com blog in an email. "He's been a great mentor and a better dad, never pushing me to follow in his footsteps, but when I decided to try it out, he was right there with endless advice and encouragement."
Clearly Jacob has the reporting chops of his dad. In fact, Jacob looks like the younger clone of his father down to his speaking mannerisms in stand ups. Go watch the younger Rascon's demo reel above. The kid has talent. There is even a clip of him in a war zone à la Art.
Jacob tells me he is excited about working in the El Paso market because there is plenty of important news to cover in the borderland and the people are great.
For those of you keeping track of the El Paso TV market, you will know that a former anchor colleague of Art Rascon's works there as an anchor. That's right, former KTRK 13 weekend anchor Stephanie Guadian helms the morning show at KFOX. It's a small world in TV.
With the transition from Art Rascon leaving channel 13, to Jacob joining the Disney/ABC station after KPRC 2 weekend mornings, I think the latter's actual anchor time was kind of lost in the shuffle the last few months.
Here is a timeline of the Rascon job moves from 2021 to 2022.
Art Rascon, who has covered everything from the Iraq war to devastating hurricanes, gets first snakebite in his own yard
It's kind of crazy.
Here KTRK abc13 anchor Art Rascon travels the world, putting himself in danger to tell stories, and then it's in his own driveway where he is bitten by a copperhead snake.
Hospital or not, Rascon is still a journalist. He's been going live on Facebook to interview his doctor and talk about his progress.
In the last hour as I am writing this, Rascon told us on Facebook Live that the snake bit him at the base of his toe and the swelling his progressing up to his ankle.
His Memorial Hermann hospital doctor says anti-venom will be given if the swelling moves up. The doctor adds the anti-venom medication is not immediately given because they first must figure out the severity of the bite. The reason is some patients are allergic to the anti-venom.
Rascon says he is experiencing pain and feels light headed. His doctor says they can't totally take a way snake bite pain, but can lessen it with medicine. The doc doesn't want to totally knock the veteran channel 13 anchor out because he still needs to talk to him about his condition.
The doctor says warm weather months are the times of year the hospital sees snake bites. So if only Rascon would have gone to his car after the next cold front, he'd be on the news today!
UPDATE
Art Rascon is back at home.
Update on the snakebite. The swelling has increased and so has the pain. If swelling passes a line on my leg, the anti-venom will be given. pic.twitter.com/O5cLjF0mlY
UPDATE FEBRUARY 15, 2021 Art Rascon returned to work at abc13 KTRK after a long battle with COVID-19.
Longtime abc13 KTRK anchor Art Rascon and his son, KPRC 2 anchor Jacob Rascon, took to Facebook to publicly talk about their family's battle with COVID-19.
The father and son Houston journalists report that right after Christmas, many of their family members in their Houston social bubble started showing symptoms of COVID.
"Thankfully, most of us had mild to moderate symptoms," Jacob said in his post. "Two weeks later, everyone is essentially recovered except dad. Ashley (Jacob's wife) got it pretty bad, with a fever for eight days, along with other symptoms."
"I have not been so fortunate," Art posted. "It has been a rough more than 2.5 weeks. The aches, pains, extreme fatigue and fever were terrible, but last Friday night I also began to experience breathing issues. On Saturday I was hospitalized and was released 4 days later. My breathing has improved only slightly. This will no doubt be a long process, but I am grateful for the small steps of progression."
Jacob ended his post by saying that some of their family are still missing their sense of smell, and they are more tired than normal, but doing well otherwise. He added they are praying for his dad's full recovery, plus healing and comfort for those who have lost loved ones or are suffering in other ways.
"Please say a prayer for my wonderful TV husband Art Rascon," abc13 anchor Melanie Lawsonposted on Facebook. "Art is battling COVID-19. He’s doing a lot better, but we want him back healthy & strong. We miss you, Art!"

Rascon recently gave us a Facebook update that tells us his last day will actually be Monday, January 3, 2022. Plus, Jacob will not take this place on the channel 13 5pm newscast, Live at 5.
"Wow, how time flies by. One week from Monday I will look into the camera at ABC-TV for one last time.
36 years of reporting events of the world to a television audience will come to an end. What an incredible journey it has been!
I am so proud to pass the reins to my extremely capable and able son, Jacob.
He will not be anchoring the 5pm news, but you will see him reporting and anchoring other newscasts.
I’m happy for him. He has spent a lifetime being involved in this business—vicariously through me, and of course, paying his dues at a variety of stations, including the NBC Network as a correspondent.
We’ve even had the opportunity to report on stories together, which you will see more of next week. Enjoy the photos!"
Rascon's longtime co-anchor, Melanie Lawson also posted about the Rascon transition:
"It’s hard to believe this is really happening now. My partner of 23 years is retiring exactly one week from now, but leaving us with the next chapter of his legacy.
As Art Rascon prepares to say goodbye and his son (and clone) Jacob joins us, take a look back at some of the incredible photos he is sharing from his career - and what a career it has been!!
I’ll be sharing some of our behind the scenes moments, as we count down to his last day. We love you, Art, and I’m going to miss you like crazy!!
Rascon writes that he and Lawson have been a team longer, "than any other reporter/anchor team in the Houston television market." It's been 23.5 years for this anchor team.
Wanting to be home near family surely came into consideration when Rascon joined KPRC 2 in 2017 to be a weekend morning anchor and reporter where he remained until this September 2021.
Viewers noticed Rascon was not on the KPRC 2 anchor desk in the last months of his contract. Now you might know why.
Based on usual television station non-compete clauses in contracts, we will not see Jacob on the air until 2022.
"[Jacob Rason] is moving on from #kprc2 and we will miss him...but for Jacob, like so many of the good ones who come into your life in this #crazy #business, is not goodbye… it’s see ya later #friend. Good luck I know you’ll be #great."
Rascon's departure from channel 2 has been rumored for months.
Now here is the next rumor...is Jacob Rason joining his father, anchor Art Rascon, at abc13 KTRK? Could Jacob one day take over for Art? One Rascon replacing another Rascon? Has this ever been done at a TV station?
We'll wait and see if it happens. Stay tuned.
New KPRC 2 hire Sabirah Rayford will take over Rascon's anchor role on weekend mornings with Ojeda and the multi-talented Khambrel Marshall.
I've been covering Rascon for many years on this blog.
Jacob Rascon announced he is leaving the ABC13 KTRK Houston morning newscast on Friday, December 13, 2024. This could be unlucky or very lucky since he is on channel 13!
Here is the email Rascon sent to his ABC13 colleagues:
"My first week here, Crystal told me 'that was the best cut-in I’ve ever seen' after I missed a cut-in. And it was all downhill from there. Thank you Crystal for always giving gentle correction with a smile. Angie is really good at that, too! Happy disgruntled director’s day, Mike! Esther can always solve a problem in 2.7 seconds. Nobody holds meetings or writes emails like Brittaney!
Nobody celebrates special days or goes off script like Elita! Thanks Rick for celebrating the special days we didn’t know existed. Thank you Rita for helping me keep up my Spanish and my energy! 'We could never be friends in real life,' Samica once told me. I’d like to point out that you were wrong.
Thanks for the movie suggestions and honest feedback, Brandon. Thank you for sharing your faith, Lynn! And Cassie! I don’t care what anyone says about you, Jerry, you’re hilarious. On Tuesdays. Great show, Ben. Except for everything you wrote! Thanks for letting me be your favorite anchor, Eric.
Who's going to scare you now, Jaime? Is there anything Doug can’t do? Amna will win an academy award someday. Thanks for being a friend, Mesha. I’m sorry for mixing you up three times, Courtneys. I think everyone should know that Charly’s New Year’s resolution this year is 'keep being awesome.'
Scott and Angel have the best office and they love visitors. I don’t know what Briana loves more, the 8am show or 'dance party with Beyoncé.' Every newscast with Kevin is a good newscast. Thanks for teaching me science, Elyse. Boom goes the thunder or the lightning, Travis?
Thank you Keaton for 'algorithms to live by' and for letting me keep this short as long as I can (thanks Yogi Berra). After all, “silliness is a matter of duration.” On behalf of everyone in the newsroom, thank you Julie for laughing loudly every morning. Finally, a big thank you to Chaz for letting me be your 'fourth favorite Rascon.'"
I hear Rascon will stay in Houston and still be on TV. Any guesses where he is going? I have some. Although the people at my hunch station don't seem to know he is on his way yet. Another case of Mike McGuff knowing before the actual staff? STAY TUNED!
Oh, and we will see more KTRK departures in December. AGAIN, STAY TUNED RIGHT HERE, as they say on TV news.
Since then, the younger Rascon has helped launch the new "First at 4AM" newscast with meteorologist Elita Loresca and co-anchored with Samica Knight and Rita Garcia.
I’ve followed Jacob Rascon’s career since he started at KFOX 14 in El Paso. Interestingly, his father, Art Rascon — an El Paso native — also spent part of his career in The Sun City, working for KVIA 7.
Considering his father's CBS national pedigree, it seemed inevitable that Jacob would catch the network's attention. Before long, Jacob joined NBC News as a correspondent.
Just in case you haven't totally reached your capacity for all things Star Wars, I thought I might get in on the action too.
Actually this post just borrows the title of the series' worst film and applies it to KTRK abc13 anchor Art Rascon (I'm assuming that episodes 7-9 cannot reach the lows of prequels 1-3).
My blog is constantly hit by television viewers across the nation looking up info on his son, Jacob Rascon - the now NBC News correspondent.
Art Rascon
The two look and speak so much alike, that Houston viewers think they are looking and hearing double. It's like, "How is Art on channel 2?"
And they kind of are seeing double. Jacob is a chip off the old block.
He first posted Thursday morning about collapsing while getting out of bed.
"Life Happens. Because I live a very public life, I want to let you know what happened early this morning. After getting out of bed I collapsed three separate times for unknown reasons. Folks here at Memorial Hermann are taking good care of me, taking tests and looking into it. They have been terrific! I’ll give an update soon. Thanks for your prayers."
Specialists here say the likely reason for the collapse was a combination of a low rest heart rate and low blood pressure. Nothing wrong with this but if I get out of bed and feel dizzy, I immediately need to lay down and not push myself.
But all is well and I am grateful for that! Again, thank you for your thoughts, your prayers, and your concern! And I thank the incredible staff of Memorial Hermann Hospital for their excellent care!
Art Rascon spent his final day on abc13 KTRK (January 3, 2022) anchoring the 11am newscast with his son, Jacob Rascon, who had his first day with the ABC owned station.
The former abc13 KTRK anchor narrates the Houston-area story of 12-year-old McKay Everett, who disappeared from his home nearly 30 years ago.
"This is a story that captured the attention of the entire nation," Rascon told mikemcguff.com. "All eyes were on Conroe, Texas, in September of 1995 when a 12-year-old boy was kidnapped and held for ransom. I covered this story as a journalist and wanted to re-visit this terribly tragic story of betrayal, greed, deceit, and a family’s worst nightmare."
Rascon believes the story is still relevant today because Everett's mother does not feel the real truth has been told.
"What you’re getting in this podcast are fascinating interviews, insight that hasn’t been heard before from investigators who found the 12-year-old boy, who figured out how he was trying to escape from the trunk of a vehicle," Rascon told me. "It’s a terribly tragic story of betrayal and greed and destroyed relationships, but it’s a story that the mother says we need to tell."
Working in a podcast voiceover capacity lets him reconnect to his award-winning work as a journalist.
"I love hosting these podcasts and diving more deeply into a story, and I would love to do more of these," Rascon added. "It’s an opportunity to give listeners a more engaging story."
Listen to the podcast via Apple, Spotify, Amazon, iHeartRadio, or by clicking here clicking here.
Jacob Rascon is joining KHOU 11 Houston as an on-air morning co-anchor starting April 7, 2025, after leaving ABC13 KTRK from the same position in December 2024. I told you back in December I knew he was staying in Houston and on television.
Surely, KHOU is looking for Rascon to bring a ratings boost to its lagging morning newscast (which has undergone many changes in the last few years) from the number one-rated ABC13 AM news. Speaking of channel 11 changes, I assume more are to come since owner TEGNA has installed new management in the last year. And then there is the question about the stability of TEGNA at this point anyway. Will it be sold, merged...etc?
This puts Rascon in the same club as his new colleague, Shern-Min Chow, who has also worked for KHOU, KTRK, and KPRC. KHOU morning traffic anchor Jennifer Reyna also worked for KPRC.
The station says he will not only anchor but also take "on an active role covering breaking news and compelling stories across Greater Houston."
“What an awesome opportunity and privilege this is,” Rascon said. “I’m so grateful and so proud to join the outstanding KHOU 11 team. I look forward to the work we will do together for the good people in my hometown.”
"Jacob brings the perfect combination of hometown knowledge and world-class journalism experience to our team," said David Loving, KHOU 11 Vice President and General Manager. "His proven track record covering local news and major national stories will be an incredible asset to our audience as we continue to deliver the most comprehensive news coverage in Houston."
At ABC13, Rascon helped launch the "First at 4AM" newscast alongside meteorologist Elita Loresca and co-anchored with Samica Knight and Rita Garcia until 7am.
Before joining KTRK, Rascon worked at KPRC 2 Houston from 2017 to September 2021, where he served as a weekend morning anchor and reporter.
"Jacob is that rare journalist who combines an extensive national and international resume with deep Houston roots," said Kathryn Bonfield, KHOU 11 News Director. "His connection to our community and his world-class reporting experience make him the perfect addition to the KHOU 11 family. We're thrilled to welcome him home."
We've watched Art Rascon recover from a snake bite, COVID and low blood pressure, now we are seeing him come back from injuries sustained while competing in an Ironman Texas competition.
After a wreck in the 112 mile bike ride portion of the competition, Rascon got up with two broken wrists and finished one hour and 45 minutes ahead of the deadline!
"I was grateful to run across the finish line, it was a great feeling," Rascon told mikemcguff.com. "When I crossed the finish line, I was incredibly grateful, I started to cry. My mom was putting my medal around my neck, and I just wept, it was really special."
It was a painful journey to get to that finish line where his 82 year old mother was volunteering and the rest of his family including son and abc13 KTRK morning anchor Jacob were waiting to cheer him on.
After the wreck on his very specialized Ironman bike, Rascon told me he could not grab the steering wheel anymore. He had to set his hand on the bars to guide it while relying more on his leg muscles instead of his entire body to move forward.
He told me every time he went over a bump he screamed, but nobody was around to hear him.
As the days progressed after the event, he felt new pain and saw more bruising.
Now a few weeks removed from the accident, Rascon tells me he is still doing his consulting work and getting much better!
Read his Facebook post below to see how his Faith helped him get through the race and into recovery.
Here is the official KPRC channel 2 release on the dueling Rascons:
KPRC-TV Channel 2 is proud to welcome Jacob Rascon to the Graham Media family.
Rascon will cover local and breaking news stories for Houston’s home for news as a reporter and anchor.
Jacob will report for both on-air and digital platforms.
Jacob will join KPRC in September 2017 from NBC News, where he worked as a correspondent based in Dallas. His assignments for NBC Nightly News, Today, MSNBC and NBC News digital platforms took him to nearly every state in the U.S., as well as Europe, the
Middle East and Latin America.
Rascon grew up in the Houston area and graduated from The Woodlands High School. He is an alumnus of Brigham Young University and is fluent in Spanish. He and his wife, Ashley, live in Houston with their four children and he is happy to finally work in his hometown.
“We’re excited to have a Houstonian with such a deep and varied journalistic background join our team,” said KPRC Vice President and General Manager Jerry Martin. “Jacob will be one of our go-to reporters on major breaking national and international stories.”
Rascon traveled with the Donald Trump campaign, interviewing thousands of his supporters and protesters across the country; he reported from Orlando, Dallas and Oregon after recent mass shootings; from Mexico for the capture of the world's most notorious drug kingpin "El Chapo"; from Turkey during the migrant crisis; from Cuba during their historic shift in U.S. relations; and from Colorado leading NBC's coverage of the Aurora movie theater gunman's capital murder trial.
“Jacob is that rare journalist with an extensive national and international resume along with Houston roots. We are extremely lucky and excited that he will be joining the KPRC Channel 2 News Team,” said KPRC News Director David Strickland.
OK...I was just messing with you up top. Yes, he is the son of abc13 KTRK anchor Art Rascon.
You might be able to swap them, and if I didn't have my glasses on, I might not even notice. Then again, that might be why I'm writing a Houston media blog and not the inventor of Facebook.
