It's ironic that it has rained like cats and dogs in Houston today because Houston is getting a new morning anchor from Seattle (aka Rain City). Turns out Fox affiliate KCPQ Q13 Morning News anchor Lily Jang is headed to KHOU 11's morning anchor chair to replace Christine Haas next to Ron Trevino.
Just last week, I blogged how now former KHOU 11 morning anchor Christine Haas was headed to San Diego's NBC owned and operated station KNSD NBC 7.
"I am incredibly blessed that KHOU is giving me this opportunity," Jang told mikemcguff.com. "Excited to finally be home where I grew up and my parents can watch me."
Jang was born in Vietnam but grew up in Houston. She graduated from Langham Creek High School and the University of Texas in Austin.
She's moving back home to help take care of her father who is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. Jang told Seattle blogger John Yeager, “Everything I ever did was because of my parents.”
Jang will blow up the Houston media social media scene. According to her Q13 bio, the Emmy nominated anchor has been honored by The Huffington Post twice as a Twitter Powerhouse. She has nearly 20,000 Twitter followers as I am writing this. That should make her one of the top Twitter users in the Houston area. She's big on Facebook too.
Before working for Tribune owned Q13, Jang was an anchor/reporter for Northwest Cable News. She also worked at WIAT Birmingham, Alabama and KFDA in Amarillo.
Yeager blogs that Jang's last day at Q13 is February 10th. Then she begins February 13th at KHOU.

Jang hit the airwaves of KHOU as a morning anchor in 2012 from KCPQ Q13 Seattle where she had worked in the same capacity.

Jang, who was born in Vietman, grew up in northwest Houston.
According to her bio, Jang attended Lowery Elementary, LaBay Jr. High and Langham Creek High School. Her first two jobs were teaching aerobics at Gold's Gym in Bear Creek and working as a cashier at Randalls off Highway 6.
Before working for Tribune owned Q13, Jang was an anchor/reporter for Northwest Cable News. She also worked at WIAT Birmingham, Alabama and KFDA in Amarillo.
She is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin.

Former KHOU morning anchor Lily Jang to produce documentary for Houston Public Media TV 8 KUHT
Former KHOU morning anchor Lily Jang has announced she will be working with Houston Public Media (TV 8 KUHT) on producing a documentary about Vietnamese refugees that came to Houston after the Vietnam War.
Jang, who was born in Vietnam, and whose family made the journey to Houston themselves, will have a unique look on the subject.
She and a KUHT crew will travel to Vietnam to document her family's history.
This local look at Vietnam will be aired in tandem with THE VIETNAM WAR, a ten-part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that will air on PBS in September 2017.
Jang left KHOU last December where she had worked since 2012.

Lily will travel to Vietnam to show the vibrant culture of the country today. They will meet expats from Houston including a fashion designer who started “Project Runway Vietnam.” He’ll show the crew the youthful and edgy fashion scene in Vietnam. They will meet an advertising executive who lives a global existence: raised in the Texas Hill country, he now works in Vietnam, has a son in Norway and a home in Houston. Lily will also experience the street food scene from the back of a moped on a “Back of the Bike” foodie tour, where she’ll surely look for the best banh-mi and pho in Saigon. Lily will also journey back to the street where she was born and share the incredible trails that her family experienced making their way to America. It will be a personal journey full of joy and excitement.

Lily Jang returns to TV for "Saigon Stories" to air on TV8 KUHT and nationally
Trust me when I say this is going to be an unflinching look at a tumultuous time in our history. Very raw and emotional. What makes this docu-series different from the other films I've watched is the access to the North Vietnamese view of the war.
If you are a fan of Burn's work, then you know what you are getting. Just like any of his other covered topics, it will be a very comprehensive and passionate look at a wound in history Burns says we are still healing from as a country.
On a local note, Tran Ngoc Toan, a South Vietnamese soldier who now lives in Houston, is interviewed for the documentary.
Since so many Vietnamese families relocated to the Houston-area after the war, Houston Public Media has produced three accompanying shows that localize the complex history the series will cover.
And I just found out that PBS stations across the country have picked up the Houston produced shows and will be airing them as complimentary programming to the Ken Burns series. VIETV, the largest Vietnamese language TV network in the country, is airing all three as well.
The first show is one I covered on Facebook earlier this year while I was on my blogging break.
Former KHOU 11 anchor Lily Jang hosts and co-produces "Saigon Stories." Houston Public Media Executive Producer Don Geraci, and former KHOU colleague to Jang, approached the former morning anchor about working on the show with the station.
This show will be worth a watch. Not only is it great seeing Jang on television again, but this is a fantastic show from top to bottom. I called Jang after watching an advanced copy and told her submit this for the Lone Star EMMY awards.
Even though Houston is home to one of the largest Vietnamese communities, I don't know much about the Vietnam of today. Jang, Geraci, and crew travelled to Vietnam to provide a look at how Saigon has transformed after the war. She also gives us a glimpse of her personal story as she is originally from Saigon or as it is now known, Ho Chi Minh City.
The next KUHT produced show is “Getting Here: Journeys From Vietnam.”
This show features stories of Houstonians who were Vietnamese refugees. One name many will know is H-Town designer Chloe Dao and winner of Project Runway.
This show will either bring you to tears or make the hair on the back of your neck raise. Dao and others, like VIETV marketing director Jimmy Nguyen, talk about the harrowing experience of escaping their homeland and facing a high probability of death during their journey.
You'll also learn of their experience in coming to America.
There is a third show called “Peace Meals” which I honestly did not have time to preview at the time of this writing. But if it's anything like the other two shows, it will be a worthwhile watch.
Kudos to the entire Houston Public Media team for their excellent work. I know they have been working on these shows for much of 2017.

She is a true inspiration to those looking to leave the local TV biz:
"She never would've left the broadcasting world, she told Insider, had the TV station not gone through a management change and subsequent layoffs.
'You always know in the back of your head this could happen: New management comes in, and they're going to clean house, and you could be a casualty — and that's exactly what happened to me,' she said.
The blow was especially difficult for her because one of the main reasons she moved to Houston was to take care of her aging parents, especially her father, who has Parkinson's disease. Unlike other broadcasters who could pick up and move to another city for a job, Jang needed to stay and take care of her family.
'That was the most devastating time in my life. Anybody else would've spring boarded to Chicago, New York, LA, or Miami, but I couldn't,' Jang, who had worked in other states before moving to Texas, said. 'I sat in a corner and cried for two weeks, but I said to myself, 'I'm going to have to pivot. I have to figure this out.'" READ THE REST

First, long-time anchor Shern-Min Chow popped back up on the evening shows this past weekend. That's where she used to be before moving to the weekdays to anchor the noon and at one time the 4pm news.

Every year I slack off like every other blog and run highlights of the past year. So here you go, the top Houston media stories of 2012 by pageviews. So that means the readers decided this list by what they clicked on most throughout the year.
1. KPRC 2's Dominique Sachse gets engaged in Rome
I wrote this post in October 2011 and it's still tops in 2012. Yes, that many people search for news on KPRC 2's Dominique Sachse and her engagement/wedding.
I hate to tell the haters this, but this post had three times the traffic of the number two post. From my blog's perspective, Sachse is the most popular talent in Houston.
2. Wayne Dolcefino and KTRK 13 divorce
The news of Wayne Dolcefino leaving KTRK 13 officially came the day before Thanksgiving. That means this number 2 post has only been up for around a month. Wow!
I said this would be the biggest media story of 2012 at the time, and I almost stopped blogging for the rest of the year.
Good thing I didn't...one other story was about to happen that would almost be as big (more on this below).
3. Gene Norman out at KHOU 11
Another big story in November, just before the Wayne Dolcefino post. Gene Norman's departure from KHOU 11 proved that some of the biggest media stories happened at the end of 2012.
4. KPRC 2's Frank Billingsley weds partner of 17 years
This is the post I talked about before. KPRC 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley's marriage to his longtime partner happened in mid-December, and readers haven't stopped reading it since.
6. KHOU 11's Chita Johnson from KRCR can dance and rap
What can I say about KHOU 11 meteorologist Chita Johnson? Clearly she has fans. This post was written in July of 2011 and people are still accessing it all the time.
8. KPRC 2's Jennifer Reyna promoted to anchor
If you have been a longtime reader here, you know KPRC 2's Jennifer Reyna has always been a popular topic. This post was from September 2011 and is still hot.
11. KPRC 2 hires fmr. beauty queen, Sharron Melton vs Lily Jang and more
This post covered four topics, but it was the last one that generated all of the traffic. It made number 11 on the list because of KPRC 2 reporter Alexandra Lewis who was a former Miss Louisiana. Ca c'est bon.
12. KTRK 13 hires Crystal Kobza, formerly of KOB
The day reporter Crystal Kobza showed up on KTRK 13, I had tons of emails from excited male viewers. No surprise she makes the number 12 post. Hate to disappoint all of her fans, but I hear Kobza has left the station after her freelance gig ended.
13. Mix 96.5 KHMX dumps Kidd Kraddick; going local
While Kidd Kraddick didn't apparently heat up mornings on Mix 96.5 KHMX, he still has a bunch of fans that wondered what happened to the show after the station decided to go local.
14. KTRK 13's Casey Curry engaged
KTRK 13 meteorologist Casey Curry is probably one of the most popular talents on KTRK 13. When I write a post about her, it always does well with readers. In fact, I now know first hand, when she does a community event, she can fill a room with fans.

"I came back to Houston in 2012 because my dad was sick. He had Parkinson's and I was able to get a job at a local TV station anchoring the morning news here.
It was a dream job.
And then in 2017, I mean reality hit, they cleaned house and I was a casualty so I had to figure it out. That was the end of my dream job.
It devastated me first. I've talked about this so, so many times, but that was the most devastating thing that's happened to me up to that point.
And I had to figure it out.
And I said, you know, OK, I got to figure out my next scene. And it was real estate."
But on a positive note, Jang has become quite the force in the Houston real estate scene. A great post television news success story that we need to hear - especially in these times.
And to this very day years later, Jang's loyal channel 11 morning viewers still comment on my Facebook page about how angry they are she and Ron Trevino are no longer anchoring the news together.
A hard broadcasting lesson for newscast viewers - TV isn't always a fair industry.
I’m teaming up with TXU Energy to help get the word out about the upcoming TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.
That means I'm also promoting the Houston media turkey calling contest (The contest will be 10am, Saturday, November 10th at the Houston Zoo - Butterfly Stage in the Children’s Zoo). KHOU 11 morning anchor Lily Jang is one of the participants. Gobble, gobble.
Lily and I emailed about how her new anchor gig is going since joining the Houston Belo station last February.
Mike McGuff: Most Houston morning shows are pretty stable anchor wise. What is it like to be the semi-newly staffed show on the block?
Lily Jang: I've only been back in Houston 7 months so I'm the newest kid on the block. I think my bosses had to work the pieces of the puzzle to get the chemistry juuuuuuust right and I love what they've done. People always ask me if it's a big cat fight with 3 ladies (Katherine Whaley, Chita Johnson and Mia Gradney)in the mornings. Oh my gosh, not at all! We're each other's biggest supporters. There are no egos and no divas. We really are friends and we hang out after work and on weekends and I think you can see that chemistry on TV. People were hoping for some drama. Sorry! Haha
What changes have you all brought to the show? Anything on the horizon?
No more anchor changes that I know of. I'm truly a morning person so I have that natural annoying morning pep! I think the fact that we are all so close, the crosstalk and the energy is just natural and you get the "real us". You can't force chemistry. We're a little family. For viewers, I hope it's like having breakfast with four friends.
Do the ladies on the show keep Ron Trevino in line?
Awwwwwww...we love Ron!!!!!! We're always so chatty and giggly that he can't get a word in edgewise. We've been called everything from "Ron's Angels" to "Ron and the Ronnettes". I think he secretly loves it though........ *wink*.
How cool is it being an anchor in your hometown?
I am so blessed. I've had people from 1st grade come out of the wood works and we've reconnected! It's crazy! Most of the time, it just feels like I never left. I'll be on KHOU mornings til they run me out of this town!!!

I told you in early January that KHOU 11 hired Lily Jang for morning anchor from KCPQ Q13 Seattle. Jang is back in her hometown of Houston and already has a channel 11 promo ready (embedded above). The Langham Creek High School grad is obviously already working at KHOU, but officially starts on the morning news next Monday.

Speaking of mornings, over at KTRK 13, anchor Sharron Melton has been MIA for a while. Well, she came back this week after recovering.
"I so want to thank all of you again for your thoughts and prayers," Melton told her Facebook page fans. "I know you made a difference."
And for good measure...I hear former KPRC 2 anchor Don Armstrong (and big voice over/talent guy) was reporting from Sky Eye HD recently.

Enjoy KPRC 2 weekend anchor Daniella Guzman while you still can. In March, Guzman is going to Chicago to be the weekday morning anchor at NBC owned and operated NBC 5 WMAQ.
Chicago media blogger Robert Feder reports Guzman's new co-anchor will be Stefan Holt. Last name ring a bell for NBC watchers? Stefan Holt is the 24-year-old son of NBC News anchor Lester Holt who joined the NBC station last year. I bet it was that cool font on his resume that got him this job.

I told you over Twitter how I was heading off to the Kroger’s Sixth Annual Bringing Hope to the Table Cake-off benefiting the Houston Food Bank Wednesday morning. That's right, lots of Houston media members and me stormed the West U. Kroger on Buffalo Speedway at Westpark for a big competition in the name of charity. It was just like that big fight scene in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy except KHOU's Lily Jang didn't bring a trident...this time. There were also no blows to the face for on camera reasons.
We were packed in tightly, with our game faces on and a talented Kroger pastry chef to assist (I needed the help). To my left were KHOU's Jang and Katherine Whaley...to my right were Fox 26 KRIV's Natalie Bomke and Chris Stipes. TV cameras in our faces and flashes going off couldn't distract us.
This year’s cake-decorating theme centered on family, hope and happiness so I did a Twitter theme complete with a mother and baby bird plus the #KrogerBringsHope hashtag. While my effort got props (my wife's idea actually), I couldn't pull off the decoration.
Morning news anchor Lizzet Lopez of Univision 45/Telefutura 67 took the top prize, followed by Jang/Whaley and Stipes.

Kroger tells me according to the latest Feeding America report, Texas has the second highest rate of childhood hunger in the nation – one in four children in the state do not know where their next meal will come from.

Remembering KPRC's Ray Sletner
You may not have known him, but you knew his work. For two decades, Ray Sletner was the "man behind the sound" at Local 2.
After a hard fought battle that began with COVID-19 nearly five weeks ago, my beloved father has passed away. While my family and I could not be by his side this entire time, and as incredibly heartbreaking it has been for us, I am comforted by the compassionate acts of the doctors and nurses at Kindred Hospital, who all gently held his hand as he took his last breath. Thank you for your calls, texts, kind messages, and words of support. Dad is no longer suffering. Love you forever, dad.
Back in January I wrote, "Jang will blow up the Houston media social media scene." Yeah a little redundant in a way, but you get what I mean. And now KHOU 11 anchor Lily Jang is doing what I predicted. The morning anchor is throwing the first ever Houston TV station tweet-up in a few weeks (I don't remember a TV station ever throwing one in the past at least).
"June is Men's Health Awareness Month," Jang told mikemcguff.com. "KHOU is proud to partner with Hotel ZaZa to benefit Blue Cure Foundation. Our social media audience is just as important as our TV audience and this is another way for us to thank you and continue being a Houston news leader."
There will be a red carpet event where attendees can mingle with KHOU 11 news personalities like Jang, Lisa Hernandez, Gene Norman, Shern-Min Chow, Vicente Arenas, Malini Basu, Andrew Horansky, Courtney Zubowski and more. Staff members of CultureMap will be there teaming up with the KHOU folks, too.
Jang, who tweets at @KHOULily, has more than 20,000 followers (here is her Facebook account). She has to be one of the most followed - if not the most followed - person in Houston TV. I asked her how she pulls in those high numbers.
"I don't really have a secret," Jang told me. "I love meeting viewers in person and social media is just another way of fostering these relationships. I follow everyone who follows me and I'm accessible. I post breaking news, but I also post pictures, engage, interact, ask for opinions and give people a behind-the-scenes look at my job and my life. Who I am on Twitter and Facebook is who I am in real life. It's about being genuine."
