Channel 13 viewers who have been complaining to me that the station has not hired a replacement for Ted Oberg will be happy to hear Ozebek is on his way. 

While Oberg is a tough act to follow, Ozebek seems ready for the job.

He has been with WSVN as its investigative reporter for four years.

In between times at WSVN, he was a a European correspondent for various international broadcasters such as TIME, FOX News, Canada’s CBC News and Ireland’s RTE News.

Prior to his time at WSVN as a general assignments reporter from 2010 to 2015, Ozebek worked for NBC2 News WBBH Fort Myers, Florida and WATE 6 On Your Side Knoxville, Tennessee.

According to his bio, the Ohio University grad reported live from Beirut, Lebanon after a car bomb attacked occurred while he was vacationing there. He also has hurricane coverage experience which is a big part of the job in the past.

Marina Neuman joins WSVN 7 Miami

Marina Neuman apparently has left her KENS 5 San Antonio weekend morning meteorologist position and joined WSVN 7News Miami in the same position (*this has been updated with WSVN hiring since original posting).

A channel 5 viewer tweeted me asking where she has been.

I started to look around to find Newman's bio was no longer on the TEGNA station's website.

Then, Neuman's LinkedIn profile really gives it away when it states she stopped working at KENS in May 2022.

To further give you details of Neuman's whereabouts, her Instagram profile location now says Miami.

Neuman joined KENS in late 2021 from WACH Columbia, South Carolina. 

The Ohio University and Mississippi State University grad started her career with WLIO Lima, Ohio.

TJ Parker returns to Houston

 

TJ Parker is returning to Houston he announced on social media, but the former abc13 KTRK Houston and current WSVN 7News Miami reporter is getting out of the TV news business.

I’ve wanted to be a reporter since third grade… so, getting to do my dream job has been 𝘵𝘩𝘦 privilege of my life. It started when I was a mini-weather watcher at NBC Chicago… then, hosting my own public access news show in fourth grade… to anchoring my college newscast…to now, reporting professionally for the past 10 years at 5 stations. This life has given me more than third grade T.J. would have ever hoped for.

I couldn’t have closed this chapter at a better place than at WSVN Ch. 7. My bosses and co-workers have felt like family, so their support means so much."

Parker left abc13 Houston in October 2021 for WSVN Miami.

Before KTRK, Parker was a reporter/MMJ for WCPO 9 News Cincinnati,  Ohio.

The Western Kentucky University grad previously worked for:

- WFIE 14 News Evansville, Indiana as a Reporter/Multimedia journalist
- WVLT Knoxville, TN as a Multi-Media Journalist/Anchor

Parker is not the only former abc13 reporter who returned to Houston, and retired from the television news biz.  

Former KTRK reporter Tracy Clemons left FOX8 WGHP in Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem in early 2022 to come back and become Texas Southern University's Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications.

TJ Parker joins KPRC 2 Houston

TJ Parker is returning to television news, this time as a morning reporter with KPRC 2 Houston multiple sources tell mikemcguff.com.

I blogged earlier this year how Parker left his reporting gig with WSVN 7News Miami to return to Houston in a non-news capacity. 

In January 2023, Parker joined Axiom Space, a privately funded space infrastructure developer headquartered in Houston, as its Public Affairs Officer. 

Parker joined WSVN in Miami back in October 2021 when he left abc13 KTRK Houston where he had been a reporter since October 2018.

He came to Houston from WCPO 9 Cincinnati, Ohio and also previously worked for:

-  WFIE 14 News Evansville, Indiana as a reporter/multi-media journalist (MMJ)

- WVLT Knoxville, Tennessee as a multi-media journalist/anchor

The Chicago raised Western Kentucky University grad interned for WECT TV6 Wilmington, North Carolina.

New KTRK 13 morning anchor Sharron Melton

Tune into KTRK Channel 13's morning news starting today and you will see a new face sitting next to Tom Koch. The new addition is anchor Sharron Melton.

Before coming to Houston TV, Sharron was at WSVN Channel 7 in Miami.

Watch out Chita and KHOU, KTRK abc13 is also importing a California meteorologist that will soon be causing a heat wave across Houston TV screens and she's got the readers of FHM magazine to prove it.

Former KNBC 4 Los Angeles morning meteorologist Elita Loresca is heading to Houston next week as channel 13's weekend morning meteorologist. And it's probably good that Loresca is moving to an ABC owned station where the Today show isn't on the air.

Consider her an unofficial West Coast/Gulf Coast swap for former KPRC meteorologist Anthony Yanez who left for KNBC earlier this year.

Working in television market #2 for so many years as she did, Loresca certainly got a lot of attention. For example, in 2012, LA Weekly named her one of LA's 5 hottest weather 'girls.'

But it was while working for Miami's WSVN when Loresca got even a bigger honor when readers of FHM magazine voted her "America's Sexiest Newscaster" in the magazine's October 2006 issue.

She talked about the honor with the La Verne Online:

For Loresca, it was good, wholesome, healthy fun, which also had to be a ratings bonanza for her station.
“I tell you what,” Loresca said. “I call that an opportunity. Not very many people can say they were voted America’s sexiest newscaster. What bothers me are people who like to form opinions based on the pictures, or who state the only reason I am where I am is ‘blah, blah, blah.’

“For me, it was just kind of a bonus and a reflection of how hard I’d worked in my career and how I’d taken care of myself, not just from a health and fitness standpoint, but emotionally and spiritually. I was in a good place in my life where I could show that off. It was a great opportunity.”

Loresca generated fan mail across the United States, as well as Europe. “When the issue first came out, I got a lot of European fan mail asking me for signed autographs,” she said. READ MORE

In another LA Weekly article from 2008, Loresca also talked about the FHM award:

She characterizes the FHM thing as an “interesting” experience, on the whole beneficial, since it was done in a “tasteful” manner agreed upon by her parents and the station. These days, though, you’re more likely to see her in a little black blazer on KNBC rather than a rain-soaked negligee — she says she’s dressing both weather- and age-appropriate (she is 31). “It gives people an indication of what it’s like outside,” Loresca says. “‘Oh, she’s wearing a turtleneck, it must be cold.’” READ THE REST

But she isn't only about looks. According to her bio, while at WSVN Miami, Loresca covered hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma from the National Hurricane Center. In fact on her first day at the station, she began forecasting the 2004 hurricane season with Hurricane Frances. Necessary experience for a Houston meteorologist.

Before Miami, Loresca was the morning and noon meteorologist at KGPE Fresno, California and the noon meteorologist/assignment editor for KGET Bakersfield, California. She is a graduate of Cal State Fullerton and earned the Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology at Mississippi State University.

While born in the Philippines, Loresca moved to Southern California at 10 months old growing up in both Los Angeles and Chino, CA.

From what I understand, current weekend morning and evening meteorologist David Tillman will now focus on weekend evenings only with Loresca's arrival.

Kelsey Sanchez leaves KVUE Austin

Kelsey Sanchez left her KVUE Austin multiskilled journalist (MSJ) and reporter position back in March 2026.

Sanchez started with the TEGNA Texas station in February 2023.

Before joining KVUE, Sanchez spent two years as a multimedia journalist at WACH FOX in Columbia, South Carolina.

Sanchez began her professional television career at WSVN 7News in South Florida, where she worked as a writer and associate producer from 2017 to 2021, helping produce newscasts.

Her journalism roots trace back to the University of Florida, where she gained hands-on newsroom experience across multiple platforms. Sanchez reported for NPR affiliate WUFT-FM 89.1 and PBS affiliate WUFT News, served as a cut-in producer, interned at WCJB TV20 and WSVN, and contributed entertainment coverage to The Independent Florida Alligator. She also worked as a general assignment reporter for The Gainesville Sun, covering local news, arts, and community events.

A graduate of the University of Florida, Sanchez earned a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications with a concentration in news.

Former KHOU reporter Johnathan Walton is chasing UFOs and more

Last time the mikemcguff.com blog caught up with former KHOU 11 morning funny man Johnathan Walton, he was in LA pitching a TV show pilot and trying his hand at stand up comedy. Now he is literally chasing UFOs and a lot more. WATCH HIS LATEST VIDEO

Mike McGuff: So you are producing cable shows now...what have you worked on/working on now?

Johnathan Walton: Yes, I'm producing cable shows now. I just wrapped on a live action series for the Cartoon Network called "The Othersiders" it's kind of like a teenage ghost hunters type show. During the past 2 years I've produced 2 seasons of "UFO Hunters" for The History Channel and one season of "That's Impossible" for The History Channel as well.

MM: How did you land this?

JW: I got a job as a PA for a production company and worked my way up. Los Angeles, as I have learned, HATES outsiders. The mentality here is: If you don’t work in LA, you must not know anything. So even though I had 8 years of TV producing experience working at KHOU, KABB and WSVN, it meant nothing to the production companies here. So I had to start at the bottom as a PA… along with all the college kids.

Luckily I was able to move up pretty quickly because I had one major advantage over all the college kids: 8 years of TV producing experience at KHOU, KABB and WSVN.

MM: What are the differences for you between working cable and local TV?

JW: A lot of travel. I’ve traveled all over the world producing shows. My crew is usually 15 people. So that’s 15 plane tickets, 15 hotel rooms and 15 people I’m responsible for. It’s very stressful because things NEVER go according to plan.

One of my most difficult shoots to date was for a UFO Hunters episode. My crew and I had to hike up a 10,000 foot mountain range in the dead of the night. I had about 90 lbs of gear on my back. I nearly fell off that mountain 1000 times. We had an 18 person crew that day. Two people in our crew never made it up the mountain. One fell during the climb, tumbled down, tore his clothes, cut up his face, arms, legs and F-ed up his ankle. The other one just freaked out when the oxygen concentration in the air dipped and he couldn't go any further. Somehow I was able to push through. The air was so thin. It was hard to breathe. I was literally crawling on my hands and knees for 4 hours while loose rocks fell all around me. I wanted to quit. But I was in the middle of nowhere Nevada, hundreds of miles from anything. I begged God almighty to give me strength to finish in one piece. It was treacherous. If something did happen, like me tumbling off the mountain, no one could have rescued me. Thankfully I got what I needed content-wise and the show turned out great. I will NEVER do anything like that again though. Unless the money's right.

MM: Last time we talked you were attempting a stand up comic career, is that still on or have you moved on to TV show producing permanently?

JW: I still do stand up. But lately in my spare time I’ve been mainly focusing on producing webisodes for “Some Stupid Show” It’s my opus. I’m trying to develop a web following so when I get the opportunity to pitch the show to the right exec at the right network it’ll be obvious it can work. MM: What do you predict you will be doing next?

JW: Producing another TV show.

MM: Do you miss TV news?

JW: Yes and no. I was so fortunate at KHOU. During my 5 year tenure I was able to witness 11 News This Morning go from the 4th rated morning news show to the number one rated morning news show. I remember during my final days at Channel 11, the station actually threw a party to celebrate being number one in the morning. It was the first time in station history that KHOU’s morning news was ever number one. I’m so grateful to have been a part of that. It was a wonderful and magical experience. But I don’t miss waking up at 3am.

MM: What about Houston?

JW: I miss Houston a lot. For starters, Los Angeles doesn’t have an HEB. I literally have to go to 3 different markets to get everything I want… when HEB used to have everything under one roof. No plug intended. There are no Taco Cabanas here either. Finding a good breakfast burrito in LA is like locating water on the moon.

I miss my Houston friends a ton. I miss the Art Car parade, the Water Wall, the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Houston is an amazing city and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

MM: Anything else you want to add?

JW: Life is beautiful. Camryn Manheim. Not so much.

VIDEO: The craziest TV newscast open

Miami Fox affiliate WSVN is famous in TV news circles for being very over the top. You might even recognize the station's set as the inspiration for the old News2Houston KPRC set.

I love it because it is so over the top. If I was a reporter at a station like that I would be jumping at the chance every night to out do everyone including my performance from the night before!

If the news managers wanted props, I'd give them props. What about me holding up a gun and firing blanks into the air? Or maybe sawing the head off a mannequin? (Although I can't think of how this would fit most stories) What about me wearing Gene Simmons KISS makeup one night? Although I would somehow owe Mr. Simmons a royalty payment for that.

Any other ideas?

Natalie Solis leaves FOX 4 KDFW

Natalie Solis announced she has left FOX 4 KDFW after 15 years with the FOX owned station.

Here is part of what Solis posted to Facebook:

"As many of you know, I had a baby in August and she is truly the answer to so many prayers. As much as I love being a journalist, I’ve decided I want to focus on her and my dear husband full time moving forward. 

Thank you for trusting me with your stories. Thank you for tuning in and sharing your feedback. Thank you for caring. Many of you have reached out over the years showing appreciation for what we do and those words of encouragement have motivated me and carried me through. 

Boy, I’m going to miss my friends at Fox 4. That’s one great group of people who lift each other up and take tremendous pride in their craft.

I look forward to watching the news from home and cheering them on. Hope you’ll keep doing the same."

Solis's husband, Craig Miller, a morning host on the legendary DFW Sportsradio 96.7 and 1310 The Ticket KTCK's "The Musers," welcomed baby daughter Sabrina Miller in August. 

Solis, who anchored weekend evenings, started with KDFW in December of 2006. 

Prior to Dallas, Solis worked for three year at WSVN Miami as a reporter.

Before WSVN, the San Antonio native was a reporter with WZBN Trenton, New Jersey.

The Brown University grad entered broadcasting through the NBC News Associates Program where she field produced stories for MSNBC, NBC Nightly News and the TODAY show. 

Solis also wrote for Latina Magazine.

Johnathan Walton returns to KHOU 11 with new book

Johnathan Walton was a morning feature reporter for KHOU 11 in Houston during the first decade of the 2000s. Before his time in Houston, he worked at KABB in San Antonio on the segment "Walton's Window."

After leaving Houston, Walton moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in comedy, which eventually led to opportunities in television production. But the transition wasn’t easy.

"The mentality here is: If you don’t work in LA, you must not know anything," Walton told mikemcguff.com in 2009. "So even though I had 8 years of TV producing experience working at KHOU, KABB and WSVN, it meant nothing to the production companies here. So I had to start at the bottom as a PA… along with all the college kids. Luckily I was able to move up pretty quickly because I had one major advantage over all the college kids: 8 years of TV producing experience at KHOU, KABB and WSVN."

In 2021, Walton launched the iHeartMedia podcast “Queen of the Con: The Irish Heiress,” which chronicled his real-life experience of being scammed out of $100,000. 

The podcast’s success led to the release of his book, “Anatomy of a Con Artist: The 14 Red Flags to Spot Scammers, Grifters, and Thieves,” published in August 2025.

Forget features...Walton should be a consumer reporter now!

The book’s release brought Walton back to his broadcasting roots, reuniting him with former Channel 11 morning anchor colleague Deborah Duncan on Great Day Houston (with a surprise appearance by Ron Treviño). He also returned to his San Antonio ties with an appearance on News 4 WOAI, KABB’s sister station, along with numerous other media outlets nationwide.

Liz Nagy joins ABC7 KABC Los Angeles

Liz Nagy joined ABC7 Los Angeles KABC in October 2025 from sister station ABC7 Chicago WLS, where she served as a general assignment reporter and contributed to the station’s investigative I-Team.

Like former ABC13 Houston reporter Kevin Ozebek, Nagy previously reported for KABC on loan during the Los Angeles wildfires, and now officially returns to Southern California as part of the station’s newsroom.

Nagy began her tenure at ABC7 Chicago in March 2016 as a per diem reporter and was promoted to staff general assignment reporter later that year. 

Before joining WLS, Nagy spent several years at WSVN 7 in Miami, working as a nightside reporter and fill-in anchor.

She previously helped launch the weekend morning newscast Three In The Morning at WEAR ABC 3 in Pensacola, Florida. 

Prior to that, she served as a weekend morning anchor and reporter at WVIR NBC29 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

A graduate of Elon University, Nagy began her career at WEIU-TV in Charleston, Illinois.

Huertas joined KSAT in May 2017 from CBS4 KGBT Rio Grande Valley where she was an anchor/reporter.

Before Texas, the award-winning journalist was an MMJ/Anchor/Producer for WJHG 7 Panama City, Florida. She also worked as a news writer for WSVN 7News Miami.

Novack, who returned to Houston in 2024 from FOX 11 Los Angeles KTTV to become the CW39 chief meteorologist, essentially flipped stations with Adam Krueger.

While in Los Angeles, Novack also worked for the Tennis Channel and ABC7 Los Angeles KABC.  Reality TV or unscripted fans might recognize him from his appearances on ABC's The Bachelorette and The Bachelor Pad.

KPRC 2 viewers might recognize him from his time on the channel 2 weekend weather desk. 

Before KPRC, he worked at WSVN 7 News Miami as a meteorologist.

The Syracuse University and Mississippi State University’s Broadcast Meteorology Program graduate began his television career with KCBD NewsChannel 11 Lubbock.

Added to the CW39 bios page is reporter Daryl Matthews, who comes from WFTV Channel 9, Orlando, Florida, where he has been since May 2023.

The Temple University previously reported for stations in Greensboro, North Carolina, and Elmira, New York.

T.J. Parker is leaving abc13 KTRK according to social media. He has been a reporter for the Disney TV station since October of 2018.

Parker came to Houston from WCPO Cincinnati, Ohio where he was a reporter/MMJ.

Delaine Mathieu exits News 4 San Antonio WOAI

Delaine Mathieu has announced on Facebook and YouTube that she is gone from News 4 San Antonio WOAI newscasts after 16 years with the station. The longtime 5pm TV news anchor says Tuesday was her last day on the air.

This comes after the much hyped news that San Antonio TV news veteran, and Mathieu's co-anchor, Randy Beamer retired from WOAI.  Mathieu was featured on WOAI's newscast Friday in a goodbye montage to Beamer.

In the video released Saturday, Mathieu offers a tearful goodbye to her colleagues and viewers.

Here is partial transcript of what she said in the video announcement:

"I'm going to keep watching. I'm a huge fan of News 4. I cannot wait to see what happens next and I don't know what I'm going to do next. I'm going to be painting a lot and probably drinking some wine and chillaxing the rest of my days.

This business is is high stress. High adrenaline. So we're mourning and so many levels, but it is, it's fast paced and I'm going to slow down and I'm going to enjoy my girls and I'm going to enjoy my husband. And cut my hair any frickin way I want to, and color it any way I want to, and wear whatever I want to and enjoy life.

But just know that I appreciate all of you for all the years that you've given me. So on that note, I'm going to say goodbye. Not goodbye, I'll see you later. Just not at 5:00 on news 4."

Sinclair Broadcast Group in the headlines

WOAI owner Sinclair Broadcast Group has been in the news this week announcing it was reducing its workforce by approximately 5% which amounts to more than 550 employees due to the pandemic. Mathieu did not mention this or explain the reason for her sudden departure.

"Here come more tears," morning WOAI meteorologist Jeannette Calle posted on Facebook. "Love this lady. Such a great story-teller. Also so caring, loving and passionate. Will also miss you dearly around the station."

"Retirements, next chapters in life...I understand and celebrate these occasions," chief WOAI meteorologist Chris Suchan posted on Facebook.  "It’s just tough to say goodbye. I will miss Randy & Delaine more than words can eloquently explain.  They’re both more than colleagues, they are family to me.  I know we’ll see each other from time to time whether over drinks or backyard grill outs...maybe the next art show “Delaine.”  But seriously, I truly hope you both enjoy the extra time with your families and all your new personal ventures ahead."

Mathieu recently started a website at delainemathieu.com.

Job after TV News and anchoring for News 4 San Antonio WOAI 

On May 19, 2021, Mathieu posted on Twitter that she was going to become a realtor:

"Chapter 2 begins! I'm extremely proud to have joined [Phyllis Browning Co.] to launch my new career in real estate!  It's an exciting time.  My 'set' has changed but my mission hasn't - I'm still here to help any way I can!"

The Phyllis Browning Company social media profile bio states that it has more than 200 real estate professionals in four offices, making it "San Antonio's largest independently-owned residential real estate company."

Dominique Sachse's reinvention after KPRC 2 Houston

In this new episode of "Friends of  Frank,” Hello Houston co-host Frank Billingsley reunites with Dominique Sachse, his former TV colleague, for a conversation about her start in media.

 "I was doing traffic reporting for KTRH and KLOL on weekends, while I was doing temp work at law firms downtown, some acting and modeling—whatever else came my way," Sachse remembered about her very first job on Houston radio. 

From her early days as a traffic reporter at MIX 96.5 KHMX to KPRC 2 Houston morning traffic, morning anchor, then 4pm anchor, and finally to award-winning evening news anchor, Sachse owes the start of her career to Professor Emeritus and former Director of the School of Communication, University of Houston, Dr. Robert Musburger.

That led the discussion to Post-Newsweek and the big change the KPRC owner brought to the then-known News 2 Houston, which was based on WSVN 7 Miami.  

But it was a smoky-eye makeup tutorial that first caught the attention of online fans, launching her unexpected journey as a digital content creator. Heck, even I once asked Sashse a makeup question for my wife!  

"It started as literally taking my cell phone, doing a reverse camera kind of smokey eye tutorial," Sachse told Billingsley.  "And I'll never forget I did it and I posted it to KPRC Facebook page. I didn't even have my own platform at the time, and the only thing I'd been posting on our station Facebook page was either news stories or maybe, you know, a photo of me and the dog or, you know, an event or whatever. I had never done anything beauty related, and I posted it and I thought, oh, what have I done? And then all of a sudden it just blew up. I had more views, more comments on that one post than anything I had ever posted."

Today, Sachse thrives on YouTube, hosting the Over 50 & Flourishing podcast and inspiring millions to find confidence, embrace their inner and outer beauty, and truly flourish.

Ever since Sharron Melton was made a KTRK abc13 field anchor in August of 2014, my readers thought the longtime morning anchor would be leaving the Disney/ABC Television Group station sooner than later.

Today that day has come.

In a post on Facebook, Melton announced her departure and broke her radio silence on the whole apparent "field anchor" demotion.

"Even as things changed, you still stayed around," Melton posted. "And I thank you for that."

Readers of my blog know that my post about Sharron Melton becoming a "field anchor" has become my number one blog post in the 10 years I've been writing here. That's quite a statement on her popularity considering it was just posted last year!

The San Antonio native came to Houston in 2007 from working as the weekend anchor at WSVN Miami. Before that, she was an anchor at WPMI Mobile, Alabama. She was also an anchor at KOBR Roswell, New Mexico. The award winning journalist got her start as a radio reporter for the Agriculture Communications Network in Texas.

The Texas A&M graduate also has a Master's degree in television communication from Eastern New Mexico University.

While in Houston, Melton has been very active in the community. Will she still be able to be involved in our community? We'll just have to wait and watch to see where she ends up next.

Melton was replaced at the morning anchor desk by then weekend morning anchor Samica Knight.
