KTRK 13's 10pm news hijacked by technical problems

Photobucket

Wouldn't you know it...things break on holiday weekends. KTRK 13's usual Eyewitness News at 10pm was delayed a full hour Saturday night because of 'gremlins' in the equipment. Here is more from the KTRK 13 twitter account:

Wondering where the 10pm news is? We're experiencing technical difficulties. Stand by & we'll have the news up soon! Thx for your patience.

The anchors must have been waiting in the studio for a longtime for the problem to be fixed. At least according to a tweet from anchor Adela Uchida:

Tom and I are sitting in the studio, thinking we will be able to start the news at 11- just 6,7 minutes. Stay with us...

Forget the late news, the 'later' news finally came on around 11pm.

Hey guess what... THE NEWS IS ON!

TV stations having technical troubles is nothing new. I remember years ago when I worked at KTRK, the audio board went out right before the 10pm news. The production crew still got the news on anyway. A few months ago, KTRK didn't have any audio in its 4pm newscast for the first 20 minutes or so. That also happened to a 9pm newscast I served as a reporter on for KIAH 39.  At least in channel 13's case, the audience apparently noticed and sent warm wishes to the station on Facebook.

So what did KTRK run instead of the news while things were being repaired? Cold Case...which normally airs after the newscast on Saturday nights. Many Houston viewers probably wanted to call the HPD cold case unit when tuning in and not seeing anchors Tom Abrahams, Uchida, meteorologist David Tillman and sports anchor Tim Melton.

Glad to see @ktrkhouston has a human voice tweeting on it again. Not sure that has happened much since I left in 2009.

KSAT 12 grabs producer from KTRK 13

Looks like KTRK 13 associate producer Joseph Lopez is going west on I-10 to KSAT 12 in San Antonio as a producer. I recently blogged how KSAT is adding newscasts.

"I'm going to miss everyone at 13," Lopez told mikemcguff.com. "It truly was an honor and a pleasure to work at Houston's TV news leader. KTRK has taught me to always bring my A-game when producing a show. I've taken so much knowledge from the producers, EPs, and the man at ship's helm, Dave Strickland."

It's interesting to note that Lopez is only 21 years old. He actually started at KTRK at age 19. He believes he might be the youngest producer in KTRK history since he has filled in as one. While I don't know if he is the youngest ever, he has to be one of the youngest for sure.

Previously Lopez worked for Clear Channel in Houston at NewsRadio 740 KTRH, SportsTalk 790 KBME, The 9-5-0 Radio Mojo KPRC.

Lopez assures me he will not forget Houston. He plans to visit often and will have an official going away party in July or August. He says everyone is invited (he better be careful what he wishes for!).

Fox 26 KRIV getting high profile candidates for former Barajas anchor gig

Just because Fox 26 KRIV has the only 9pm newscast in Houston with anchors (KIAH 39 famously dropped all talent for anchorless NewsFix), doesn't mean the Fox owned and operated station is skimping on experience when it concerns former anchor Mike Barajas' replacement.

Sources inside Fox 26 tell me two high profile anchor candidates have been to the station in the last weeks vying for the open main anchor gig. One name I heard is a big 3 network correspondent. The other is a big market anchor for a station on the East Coast with national experience too.

“We have no announcements to make at this time,” a KRIV spokesperson told me when I asked about the candidates.

The former Mike Barajas seat wasn't cold yet and even I received an email from a reporter at a top station in Los Angeles asking me about the position. Guess the big boys use their reporter skills and leave no stone unturned when applying for a position. That shows a lot of wisdom. Clearly the KRIV main anchor gig is a hot property.

So it appears KRIV is not just looking at up and coming middle market stars...although that could be in the cards for all we know too (I put this part in the post because I don't want to look too foolish in case the station hires a 24 year old from Boise, Idaho as the main anchor :)   ).

Houston Dining 2011 - A Guide for Visitors (and Most Locals, Too)

Houston Dining 2011 - A Guide for Visitors (and Most Locals, Too)Houston Dining on the Cheap author, Zagat contributor and past mikemcguff.com blog contributor, Mike Riccetti, has a new book out that should make Houstonians hungry for more.

It's called Houston Dining 2011 - A Guide for Visitors (and Most Locals, Too) and I think it caters to both groups well. I was born in Houston and learned stuff from reading it.

Riccetti breaks it down by location, type of food and then he goes and gets creative on us:

- Local restaurants profiled on Guy Fieri's show and The Next Iron Chef
- Places that serve a nice variety of scotches to celebrate the close of that big deal, or just get a customer drunk on expensive stuff
- Restaurant rows - areas like the Rice Village and lower Westheimer where there is a concentration of restaurants

This is an e-book and is a Kindle release but Riccetti says it can also be read on iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, PC, Mac, Blackberry, and Android-based devices.

Bob Boudreaux and Dr. Red Duke together for award

The Angel Awards were held over the weekend at The Rice and some Houston luminaries showed up in force reports Shelby Hodge.

Former KTRK 13 anchor/reporter Bob Boudreaux was the emcee. Still popular on the charity host circuit even though he hasn't been on the news in years.

Some of the honorees also have KTRK connections. In the spotlight that night was Texas Medical Center legend Dr. Red Duke who used to provide medical stories for channel 13. And let's not forget Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative COO Michael Mizwa, brother of longtime KTRK 13 photographer John Mizwa.

Here is a Dr. Red Duke report on KTRK 13:

KVUE 24's Olga Campos captured on film as Houston teen

It's not everyday you jump on YouTube and find footage of popular TV anchors as teenagers. To my surprise, that did happen to me concerning KVUE 24 Daybreak and Mid-Day Anchor Olga Campos.

"I grew up in Houston's East End where my parents, Jesse and Esther Campos, still live in the same house off Polk Street," Campos told mikemcguff.com. "My years on the (then) Foley's Teen Council and my reign as Miss Fiestas Patrias - are among my high school highlights!!!"

Courtesy KVUE

Campos told me she is not sure about who shot this footage or how it appeared online, but she has enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

"My daughter, Allegra, a Junior at Belmont University in Nashville came across this," Campos said. "We thought it was sweet, since I was younger (16 at the time) than she is now (she and her twin sis are 20). It's unbeivable how many high schoool friends spotted the clip."

The narrator on the clip says this video was captured October 1972 and was a home movie. Campos was in costume for Houston's Main Street Art Happening.

While this is a rare find, I guess it is not that rare. KPRC's click2houston.com is showcasing its anchors high school prom photos.

Former Houston and DFW TV reporter now at CBS New York

Over the past two years, Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth television viewers watched Duarte Geraldino report for Fox 26 KRIV and then CW 33 KDAF.

Now I spotted Geraldino on CBS News (it was the network early morning show at 4:30am anchored this day by former KWTX Waco, KTVT Dallas and CNN anchor Betty Nguyen). His tagline is "for CBS News, New York." I don't know if that tag line means Geraldino is permanent or a on a freelance basis with the so-called "Tiffany Network." His role could also mainly be for CBS' station feed called Newspath.

I contacted Geraldino on Facebook but did not hear back from him.

GalTime.com launches in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio; TV show coming

GalTime.com is a site that has launched around the country including Houston, Dallas and San Antonio.  It will eventually morph into a TV show. I talked with Fisher Communications VP of Lifestyle Content KyAnn Lewis (you also might know her as the former KIAH 39 news director) about the site and how it's gaining traction in Houston and Texas.

Mike McGuff: First, what is GalTime?

KyAnn Lewis: GalTime.com is an online women's lifestyle magazine featuring topics like love, sex, parenting, food, fashion and travel. We have a huge group of women who contribute to the site. These "gals" range from site users who comment and blog on the site, to journalists (like me) and a wide variety of experts.

We started out as a national website and then began launching local versions of the site in cities around the country with Houston being one of them. We have a lively and passionate community of women in every city who contribute ideas and content.

MM: How will it break into the Houston market?

KL: GalTime Houston kinda came to us. We'd always planned to launched to Houston, but from the day that GalTime.com went live, we saw lots of traffic and interaction from women in the Houston-area. Launching a Houston version of the site just made sense.

Juddeth-Morgahn Miller

Because GalTime's a fun site, we get lots of requests from women wanting to write for the site. In Houston, we've got a great team of contributors - specifically Juddeth-Morgahn Miller who is our "Go-To Gal". She shops, eats and drinks in order to keep Houston gals current about what's hot around town. We're also working with Veronika of the popular website, Veronika's Blushing, who writes about home decor and fashion. We have a partnership with Vicki Powers of the successful website, Houston On The Cheap, who keeps GalTime Houston readers in-the-know about deals and freebies. And we have other contributors slated to join the team in the coming weeks.

Right now, Houston GalTime is gradually building and we're expecting it to become as successful as many of our other GalTime markets. We've also recently brought GalTime to San Antonio and Dallas and we're working to add contributors there.

As we continue to add more cities to our list of websites, we'll eventually be adding a GalTime TV show that will air in markets around the country.

UT sports gets new radio home at ESPN 97.5 KFNC

Texas Longhorns Tufted Rug (20-inch x 30-inch)
{This news came out last week, but my original post was deleted by the blogging system...here it is again restored.}
ESPN 97.5 KFNC has announced it is the new Houston radio play by play affiliate home for The University of Texas Longhorns.

"The UT sports program is synonymous with excellence, as is ESPN.” said Peter Remington, VP/Market Manager for Cumulus Media of Houston, in a statement. “And we are committed to bring to the Houston alumni base of fans the best, uninterrupted play by play in town.”

This makes ESPN 97.5 the only place to hear coverage of Longhorns Football and Men’s Basketball starting with the 2011 – 2012 Season. The release says this is a five year agreement and includes all regular and post season football and men’s basketball games, as well as other select Texas events.

“We will provide the University of Texas and their loyal, passionate fans the atmosphere they deserve for a long time to come," says ESPN 97.5 program director Dave Tepper.

Cumulus Houston also owns 104.1 KRBE and 103.7 KHJK.

SportsRadio 610 KILT has been the home of UT Longhorns sports radio.

Houston radio DJs of the 1960s talk about era

Former KTRK 13 sports anchor Dan Lovett put together a video a few years ago that focuses on Houston's golden age of radio. Hear from the likes of KILT's Chuck Dunaway, KNUZ's Joe Ford, KNUZ's Paul Berlin, KNUZ's (and current KTRK 13 anchor Dave Ward), KIKK's Bill Bailey, KNUZ's Arch Yancy, KILT's Bill Young, KCOH's Skipper Lee and KILT's Jim Carolla.

They're all talking 60s rock n' roll (lots of Beatles talk) and what it was like working Houston radio and news in those times.

As a bonus, listen to KILT Radio Houston TX from 1966 right here and 1977 here.

KXAS 5 grabs photographer Peter Hull from KDAF 33

KDAF 33 photographer Peter Hull is probably getting called short timer around the Tribune Dallas station's hallways. That's because he is moving to NBC O and O KXAS 5 very soon. It's a move he tells me is very humbling.

"I've enjoyed coloring outside the lines at KDAF," Hull told mikemcguff.com. "Shooting and editing these enterprise features on a daily basis forces you to push the limits of your creative problem solving and storytelling abilities. This is one of many lessons I will bring with me to KXAS."

Previously Hull worked at WHP CBS 21 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Before that he was at KCEN 6 in Waco/Temple/Killeen (a shout out to the Mayborns from the old days).

Hull's last day at KDAF is May 27th. He starts at KXAS on May 30th. Congrats.

VIDEO: Houston Astros fan runs on field, evades security like Spiderman

Friday night, a Houston Astros fan made the game really interesting at Minute Maid Park when he ran on the field in the bottom of the ninth and evaded security in a Spiderman like fashion (minus the web slinging). But get this...he then jumps back into the stands and yet again evades security. Carlos Lee was up at bat...what was he thinking?

The video, taken by fan Mark Lancaster, has already been featured on AOL's Sporting News and his quickly going viral. It's even spawned parodies already.

The dude on the field is being hailed as a great parkour. I didn't know what that meant but you can read more about it here.

According to ESPN, he did eventually get caught.  You can read more about this daring stunt here.

Texas Iconoclast tackles Texas politics, media and culture from the center-right

My venture into the blogging world started in 2005 after I interviewed Charles Kuffner of Off the Kuff and Kevin Whited/Anne Linehan of blogHOUSTON for a KTRK abc13.com article (I was actually using my full name as a byline back then).  Both blogs have loyal followers and lots of influence on Houston and Texas issues.

Now a new chapter opens for Whited as he starts a blog with Evan of Perry vs World and Cory Crow of Harris County Almanac (and Lose an Eye, It’s a Sport before that).

I chatted with Whited and Crow over email about Texas Iconoclast, which they describe as a review of Texas politics, media and culture from a center-right perspective. The site officially launched a few weeks ago.

Why did you start Texas Iconoclast and what will it cover?

Cory Crow: For me, Iconoclast was all about filling a hole in Texas political coverage. To avoid the old "liberal bias" cliche I think that what you see from Texas MSM is a statist view of the world where there's no government solution that can't find a problem to attach itself to. Iconoclast was designed to counter that. Hopefully it will be done with with wit, and some unique insight.

Kevin Whited: I'm pretty sure you've heard my lament that so many political bloggers cover national politics, and so few cover local and state. I've talked to various right-bloggers for a long time about doing a group blog focused on Texas, but we just never achieved critical mass... until recently.

I think what you're going to see from us is a unique perspective on Texas politics.... and sometimes the journalists who cover Texas politics. You'll see a defense of the idea of limited government, and respect for the social mores of Texans (broadly speaking), and promotion of Texas as a place of opportunity and innovation. You might see us complain a little if those perspectives are poorly represented in MSM reporting, or if the statist perspective is overrepresented.

Why are there two separate blogs (morning roundup links and lengthier commentary)?

Kevin: As we were tossing around ideas for the site, we spent some time discussing the sorts of sites WE found most useful. The ones that came up frequently were aggregation/curation sorts of sites. For me, sites like Real Clear Politics and Brothers Judd get my day started -- and in Texas, Texas Tribune's morning roundup and Jason Embry's roundup for the Statesman. We decided to front our project that way -- but with our political perspective. We thought it made more sense to break out longer commentary in its own place.

Cory: The round-up is designed to be just that, a daily link blog of most of the news that's news in Texas. The blog is the place where the editors (Evan, Kevin and myself) can go long-form on issues, elections, etc.

What has the reaction been?

Kevin: Good so far. I think it's harder than ever for new blogs to get traffic, but we seem to be picking up some interest from some of the other state bloggers, and some journos and some think tankers. That's encouraging.

Cory: So far, fairly positive. I'm not sure of the exact count of unique visits, but I know it's growing. So far our commentary has been productive as well.

With your other blogs, are you going to run out of time/material?

Kevin: Time always seems to be the enemy! As material goes, I think that could potentially affect Cory and Evan a little more than me, as they've written a lot -- and smartly -- about state politics for a long time on their own blogs, whereas I've done much less.

Cory: I doubt it. Harris County Almanac is primarily Houston/Harris County centric and I rarely venture into other topics. Plus, that blog is more based on humor and sarcasm while Iconoclast is more serious in nature. One thing I've learned, there's always PLENTY of stuff to blog about.

Anything else you want to add?

Cory: I encourage people to comment, and to send us links that we might miss. Also, if anyone has something that they think needs to be addressed from a center-right perspective they can always drop us a line. We hope this grows over time into something people of all political stripes can use, even if they don't always agree with us.

New KTRK 13 reporter Demond Fernandez drove in from San Antonio's WOAI

Courtesy WOAI
Over the past few days, you might have noticed a new face on KTRK 13. WOAI reporter Demond Fernandez has taken I-10 from San Antonio to Houston to join Eyewitness News as its latest reporter addition.

According to Fernandez's WOAI online bio, he arrived in San Antonio in July 2005. He previously worked at WEYI Newscenter 25 in Flint, Michigan, as a weekend anchor, crime reporter, “On Your Side” investigator and Newscenter 25’s “Consumer Watchdog.”

Doesn't sound like he had much time for sleep wearing all of those hats and shovelling snow to get his car out to go to work.

Fernandez got his start WSYM Fox 47 News in Lansing, Michigan as a general assignment reporter by day and a student at Thomas Cooley Law School by night. I commend him for that because if you go into media...it's good to have a backup.

His bio also says he was honored with a Michigan Association of Broadcaster’s Award for investigative reporting by exposing beauty supply shops that were illegally selling cosmetic contact lenses to kids and adults across mid-Michigan.

So let me say...welcome to Houston Demond.

Power 100.7 to hit Houston radio with rhythmic Christian radio

A new type of music is hitting the Houston radio airwaves soon. In fact you'll be able to hear Power 100.7 this summer.

"We are launching a rhythmic Christian radio station targeting adults 18-35," programmer Hector Garcia told mikemcguff.com. "We aren't the typical Christian radio station. We want to give listeners who are tired of music that degrades women, teaches violence, doing drugs and [says] having a carefree sex life is a way to live."

Garcia, who previously worked as an account executive at KTRK 13 (where I met him) and Clear Channel, says the station's competition will be Hot 95.7 KKHH, 104.1 KRBE and 97.9 The Box KBXX.

"Our effort is to bridge the gap between those who are jamming on The Box to those who are listening to [89.3] KSBJ," Garcia added. "We will bring the message of Jesus Christ in a unique and extraordinary way to listeners who aren't interested in church let alone tuning into typical Christian music that they may not be appealed to."

Power will go 24/7 via mobile and iPad devices this summer with a weekly show on 100.7 FM in Houston. That'll eventually grow as demand requires (the rest of 100.7 KKHT's programming will remain the same).

"We are very happy about the launch of this new Saturday night feature on KKHT," Salem Communications Houston operations manager Chuck Tiller commented on this post. "We want to remind our listeners that 'Power 100.7' is a Saturday program on '100.7 The Word, KKHT,' which is owned and operated by Salem Communications. KKHT has not changed formats and will continue to feature it's Christian teaching programming daily, in addition to this exciting new Saturday night line-up."

The group behind this project is already looking to expand the music to other markets.

"We believe that the music industry has played a role in demoralizing this nation, and with this station, we hope that we can restore a standard in this country," Garcia said. "Standard? Something we lost many years ago. Change the music, change the world."

In 2010, 89.3 KSBJ launched NGEN radio on HD radio. It targets an audience that likes rock/alternative music.

Glee: The Music, Volume 5While we were in the hospital last week, I missed blogging about Fox 26 KRIV's ‘Is Glee too gay?’ debate. Apparently I was one of the few folks, not blogging about it.

At issue was a debate (the kind of talking head battle Fox News features) between Houston activist Ray Hill and Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association. The segment was anchored by Damali Keith in the 9pm newscast right after Glee aired.

So far the GLAAD backlash has hit the digital pages of publications like Time, Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter and a lot more.

Houston's 55 KTBU is becoming a Spanish network called Mega TV

I kind of wondered about some of the recent programming changes over at Houston's 55 KTBU (formerly The Tube). It all started when I heard lots of its locally produced shows were getting the axe. Now we know why as the station is being sold to Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. which will air Mega TV on the channel.

Interesting swap lately. We've recently seen KNWS 51 go Spanish, Channel 57 KUBE become English and now KTBU 55 go Spanish.

Here is more from the official release:

Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. ("SBS" or the "Company") (Nasdaq:SBSA) announced today that on May 2, 2011, it entered into an agreement to acquire KTBU-TV (Digital 42;Virtual Channel 55) and other television assets serving the Houston market from U.S. Farm & Ranch Supply Company, Inc. and certain of its subsidiaries for $16.0 million. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of 2011, pending FCC approval.

KTBU-TV is a full-power television facility reaching approximately 1.8 million households in Houston, the nation's fourth-largest Hispanic television market, through its over-the-air, cable and satellite distribution platforms.

Raúl Alarcón, President and CEO of SBS, commented, "Houston is a leading U.S. Hispanic market and this transaction is an ideal expansion of our Mega TV footprint, given the rapidly growing national Hispanic population."

The Company intends to fund the acquisition from cash-on-hand and free cash flow generated from operations.

Since SBS launched Mega TV five years ago, the network has expanded its distribution to 5.6 million households via affiliates in 11 cities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, as well as cable and satellite distribution throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. SBS leverages its diversified media resources to provide infrastructural support to Mega TV and develops original content for the network at production facilities located in Miami, Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico, with additional bureaus in New York and Los Angeles.

"Mega TV has always been at the forefront in providing original Hispanic programming to an audience that expects high quality and engaging content. We are proud to expand our commitment to our viewers by bringing Mega TV to Houston on KTBU Channel 55," commented Albert Rodriguez, Chief Revenue Officer of SBS.

Is KHOU 11 getting a 4pm newscast?

Stations around the country are announcing plans for a post Oprah Winfrey world. Many stations have indicated they will put news in the former talk show host's slot. For example, I posted last Friday that KSAT 12 in San Antonio is doing just that.

So what about KHOU 11 in Houston? If the station has made a programming announcement for the 4pm hour, I have not heard about it yet.

My bet...news. Here is why I think that and part of it has something to do with another Houston station actually.

I heard over the weekend that KTRK 13 has posted billboard around town featuring its 4pm news anchors. I do not remember a time where the channel 13 4pm newscast has ever been advertised that prominently.

This leads me to believe KTRK 13 has made a preemptive strike against KHOU 11 (if a 4pm show is in its future). KTRK probably figures if viewers think 4pm news, it will come into their minds first.

Next, KHOU 11 has posted a lot of jobs recently:

News: Meteorologist
News: Executive Producer
News: Assignment Desk Editor
News: Video Editor

It would make sense that the news department would want to add some new depth to its roster before launching a new full hour of news.

But, then there is a post I linked from Uncle Barky yesterday that says WFAA 8, KHOU's Belo sister station in Dallas, is not starting a new newscast to replace Oprah. Does that mean KHOU will follow the same plan?

Guess we will find out soon enough.

Rowdy Yates talks his Houston radio career at KILT and KIKK with Mike McGuff

Former 100.3 KILT afternoon (and morning) jock Rowdy Yates shocked the Houston radio world when he recently left for Tulsa for his wife's new job. Don't worry about him, he's already landed a morning show at 98.5 KVOO (he starts May 9th at 6am)!

But what about his time on Houston radio at the former 95.7 KIKK (now KKHH) and 100.3 KILT? He talks to mikemcguff.com all about it.

Mike McGuff: When you got to Houston in 1994, did you ever think you would remain in Houston for such a long period of time?

Rowdy Yates: No. My plan was to log about three years tops. I had always wanted to work on the West Coast and even told our GM (station general manager) at the time of my intentions. Just a month or so in at KIKK, HE goes to Los Angeles and I spend 16+ years in Houston. I have no regrets.

MM: What was it like moving over from KIKK to KILT?

RY: It was most certainly the pivotal point in my career. Without KILT there never would have been any major awards, industry nominations and national recognition that came from working a key time slot at such a powerful and respected radio station. KILT allowed me to really learn and flourish those early years as a personality, plus we all encouraged one another to do our best. I learned a lot about ‘friendly competition’ from the KILT staff.

I am so grateful to KIKK for bringing me to town. KIKK was my first full-time major market job. It broke my heart to see KIKK go away for good, and all of the unnecessary (and all too frequent) changes made to KIKK when the solution to its ratings woes was so simple - just let KIKK be KIKK. I loved my time at KILT, but I will always be a KIKK’er.

MM: What made 100.3 KILT such a powerhouse over the years?

RY: The people. Truly the most gifted air staff I ever worked with had to be the KILT crew. I was honored to be a part of it from 1997 up until just a few years ago. The morning show, the news department, the full and part-time lineup was so solid. The folks on the street and an awesome behind the scenes staff were equally as talented. They all contributed to the success of the station all those years. Program Director Debbie Brazier, who hired me at KILT, was of the belief that the most important thing was what came out of the speakers. If we did our job there, everything else would fall in to place and it did.

MM: What was it like taking over for Hudson and Harrigan?

RY: Difficult and exhausting, but very exciting. I was notified of their departure after being on vacation for only 17 hours. Needless to say, we packed up our beach house and rolled back in to town. I assumed the morning slot within a few days. That began a year-long BLUR I am just now looking back on and trying to process. On one hand, I hated to see the guys and the brand go away because it was so big for so long. But, I knew as well as anybody it was time for a change there, and also what a difficult choice it had to be. But, it was essential for the survival of the station itself to explore new options for KILT in morning drive.

With that being said, I was particularly proud of what we were able to accomplish in our nine month run. We stopped the ratings slide (which had gone on far too long) and we managed to get the station in to the top 5 in morning drive for the first time in several years. We worked very hard to keep advertisers on the morning show (and the station) after H and H left, and the good news was they all stayed. Then, new advertisers came on board. We even beat KKBQ’s morning show fairly early on. They had been the country radio ratings leader in morning drive for the past few years. That had to be somewhat embarrassing given we were just a ‘fill-in’ show.

Was I disappointed when I did not get the morning job? Yes. I won’t lie to you. But that was their decision, and I respect them for it. It is their train, and I was paid to toot the whistle-whenever and wherever. I certainly wish the new crew well - it was a real treat to observe how Greg Thunder works. He is a master at his craft, a great guy and they will do well.

My departure in many ways will be good for a lot of others at KILT. Steve Rixx who was laid off due to budget cutbacks over a year ago has assumed the afternoon drive slot, and is back to full time status again. “Cowboy” Dave Kelly, who joined Erin and me on the morning show, ended up becoming the full-time producer for the new Foley and Thunder show. Even Tom Fontaine, who was a victim of the same budget cuts as Steve is now working behind the scenes on the new morning show.

The best news out of all of this is that I managed to land a morning show of my own! When we arrive in Tulsa, I will have a real opportunity to learn and grow as a morning personality. Not just a fill in or replacement jock. The experience will be invaluable, and hopefully put me in a position to go on to do bigger and better things later in my career, as a bona fide morning radio star. That is what I want to be. So, I’ll begin the morning show on legendary country station KVOO 98.5 FM May 9th at 6am.

MM: What will you miss the most about Houston?

RY: The beach, Buc-ee’s, and 6.0 beer!

MM: How did you make it through your last day on the air?

RY: It was not difficult at all, as nothing was ever said on the air. It was business as usual. Since I resigned and was not fired, and because I elected not to do a ‘Swan Song’ show, I merely introduced the last song around 6:55 and left. I have been gone since Friday (the 22nd) and did not even turn in my key-card until about five days later. KILT and CBS management offered me the opportunity to say goodbye and in a number of different ways. I just did not feel comfortable drawing that much attention to what even I considered to be not that big of a deal. The move was about my wife, not me.

MM: Can you give us some wacky story that really stands out during your Houston tenure?

RY: There were several. We did a 19 hour long April Fool’s joke that still goes down as one the all-time best radio gags I have ever been a part of. Due to the time change, we managed to convince listeners that the electronic clocks at the station had gone haywire. So, we switched all our shifts around. Complete with wrong time checks, jingles, newscasts, traffic, etc. We did our night time request show in the middle of the day, the morning show in the afternoon, afternoon show in morning drive. It generated a lot of chatter. That is what KILT was so good at ‘in the day’ (for decades for that matter) was engaging the audience, and getting them involved in the fun.

I recall the time that I accidentally gave away $10,000 to the wrong person in our “Song of the Day” contest. I thought I was fired for sure, but that ‘goof’ if you will, generated ten times that amount in publicity for the afternoon show and KILT. While I was advised to be a bit more attentive, even the General Manager agreed it made for some entertaining radio.

The funniest story, looking back (though it was not at the time) had to be the execution of Karla Faye Tucker. Wait for it...she was the first female in Texas to be executed in almost 100 years if I recall. It drew international attention, and since KILT was the FM station for late breaking, up-to-the-minute news and information, we had the story. Shortly after 6pm, News Director Jim Carola waved at me from the news booth to interrupt the song for the official word that she had met her maker. I fired off this big sounding musical news into, complete with a man with an even bigger voice than Jim’s, that says “this is a KILT News special report…” and Jim informs the thousands tuned in that “Karla Taye F*cker” had just been executed! At the time, neither one of us thought much of it. Jim looked over his glasses at me for a split second, and moved on just like a pro would do. It was only the next morning after H and H got wind of the slip that the field day began. *Sad that poor Jim’s 40 year career at KILT would be remembered more for that accidental slip of the tongue more than anything else he had accomplished during his four decade run.

MM:  What's going to happen to Country Gold?

RY:  I will continue to work with syndicator Westwood One, and hopefully KILT will continue to run the show in Houston. If not, I think that there would be another signal in the market that would be delighted to run the show. Suits will have to work that out, not me. The show now clears in about 130 markets from Coast-to-Coast, and originated from my home studio in Greatwood. The aforementioned studio is currently shoved in the back of my F-150, bound for Tulsa. Listeners around the country will not notice any changes or interruptions, other than I accidentally disconnected the toll free number. I gotta get that fixed PDQ!

I am very excited about the future, and what it will bring for my wife and me. I leave knowing that KILT is in good hands. Recent ratings prove it. Mark Adams, who is KILT’s new Operations Manager, is a brilliant guy and Brian Purdy is without a doubt the best General Manager I have ever seen. I say that not to kiss up, but for the simple fact that it is true. Growing up in the radio business, I have seen some super managers. This guy is without peer. I hope to work with him again.

KIAH 39 to start morning news with Eye Opener; Mia Gradney returns

EYE OPENER ID's with LOCAL TALENT from Creative Group | Central U.S. on Vimeo.

Here is an exclusive from mikemcguff.com (yes, I used to work there). KIAH 39 has let me know it is launching a weekday morning show May 9th. Called Eye Opener, the show will be a mix of news, information and entertainment according to the station.

“The Houston television market is crowded with traditional network morning shows and doesn’t have anything like Eye-Opener," said Roger Bare, KIAH-TV’s vice president and general manager. “It is designed to be irreverent, provocative and unpredictable—we want viewers tuning in to get a quick dose of the news they need, and to come back because they saw something new that they didn’t expect.”

Fans of former KIAH 39 News anchor Mia Gradney will be happy to know she is going to be on Eye Opener which runs 6-8am. Gradney, a native Houstonian, will anchor segments every half-hour with the basics on local news, weather and traffic.

“I’m excited to be a big part of Eye Opener and I think viewers will find it informative and entertaining and filled with news they can use throughout their day,” Gradney said.

The rest of the show will feature topics ranging from health and wellness to parenting issues to the latest tech gadgets.

EYE OPENER LAUNCH PROMO from Creative Group | Central U.S. on Vimeo.

Eye Opener's main anchors will be Kirby O’Connell, Sean Dowling and Adam Lee Campbell. In addition, the release says there will be contributors like Dr. Steve Salvatore, a board certified Emergency Medicine physician who covers a mix of wellness topics including fitness and nutrition, Teresea Pelham and Sarah Cody with the “Mommy Minute,” focused on parenting issues, and “Wrench,” the alleged hunky handyman who offers helpful hints on keeping your house in shape.

The show's executive producer is four-time Emmy winner Raymond J. Brune who previously served as executive producer of ABC's Good Morning America Sunday and World News Now. He also served as VP of News at E! Entertainment.

When you see someone like that in charge, it makes me believe the show will be syndicated or piped to other Tribune stations (Houston is the debut market). The Eye Opener website says this is a Houston-centric program, because as you can tell from the show's segments, it is produced in Chicago with Gradney providing the local updates throughout the two hours (for example the video on the click through features a bus in the background of the shot with a Chicago Transit Authority website url plastered on it).

From the few clips I have seen online, Eye Opener is not like NewsFix (now featured on KIAH 39), but it does have an irreverent tone that NewsFix is going after.

Watch if for yourself weekdays starting May 9th, 6-8am on CW39 KIAH.
