TV anchor goes too far with turkey call

Renee Kohn, a self-described "often sarcastic co-host of San Diego Living," showed off just how far she is willing to go to get a laugh. A turkey call segment on her show has become a viral video hit. Why? The intimate looking way Kohn goes after calling turkeys. I don't even know what to say, dim the lights and watch the video.

By the way, Kohn's bio says she's also worked in Texas!

KPRC 2's assistant ND Kathy Williams leaving the station

TV agent Rick Gevers, who was a classmate of newly appointed KPRC 2 assistant news director Rick McFarland, found out what's going on with current KPRC assistant news director Kathy Williams:

Rick will replace KATHY WILLIAMS as the Assistant ND. She is leaving the station for a new opportunity to be announced soon.

Last week, I blogged about how McFarland, who was appointed news director a few years ago, was returning to the assistant ND position. According to his online bio, McFarland started at the station in June 1980 in the sports department and has moved up through the years.

This caused me to wonder what was happening to Williams. She landed at KPRC 2 after leaving KRIV 26 as news director in 2009.

UH wins Gowalla check-in contest, gets $10,000

The University of Houston let me know about a recent geo-location contest through Gowalla it entered with its students. Turns out UH won and got a $10,000 donation to the university's Cougar Community TierOne Endowment fund from Gowalla (resources from the fund provide stipends for undergraduate research and study abroad):

University - University of Houston - Light Switch Covers - single toggle switch
Gowalla, the location-based social networking service headquartered in Austin, sponsored the contest to encourage school spirit during the college football season. Participating universities earned points as students checked-in around campus via Gowalla. Each check-in netted the university one point, with five unique campus checkpoints qualifying for extra points. The five extra points locations on the UH campus included Robertson Stadium, University Center, Cougar Baseball Field and the "What is the Nature of This?" statue.

UH entered the competition ranked 29th, but continued to move ahead until securing first place with more than 6,000 points. The University of Texas at Austin was the only other school to exceed 5,000 points and placed second in the final tally. Baylor University, the University of South Carolina and Texas A&M University rounded out the top five.

"Our social media presence grew tremendously in 2010, and we're excited to build on that success in 2011," said Jessica Brand, social media coordinator. "Winning the Gowalla Check-in Challenge is not only a great way to kick off the year, but helps strengthen the bond between students and the campus community."

CBS Sports' Jim Nantz to open Alzheimer's center at Methodist Hospital Houston

CBS Sports' Jim Nantz will open an Alzheimer's center at The Methodist Hospital in Houston. Strange how timing works...the announcement was made yesterday on the anniversary of my mom's death from Alzheimer's Disease:

Emmy Award winning CBS Sports commentator Jim Nantz and The Methodist Hospital in Houston have created the Nantz National Alzheimer Center (NNAC), an all-inclusive center committed to accelerating the progress of cutting-edge Alzheimer's research and treatment in hopes of one day finding a cure. The Center will provide an environment for comprehensive care of Alzheimer's patients and their families.

CBS Sports announcer Jim Nantz announced the creation of the Nantz National Alzheimer Center at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday. Envisioned as a center for research and comprehensive care of Alzheimer’s patients, it is named in memory of Nantz’s father, who died in 2008 of the disease. Photo by Don Hill/The Methodist Hospital System.
Nantz returned to his adopted hometown of Houston to make the announcement with Dr. Stanley Appel, Chairman of Neurology at The Methodist Hospital, and Ron Girotto, president and CEO of The Methodist Hospital System.

Nantz's father, Jim Nantz Jr., died in 2008 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and was treated at The Methodist Hospital. Every 72 seconds, someone in the United States is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and it is projected that as many as 16 million people will have Alzheimer's by 2050.

"Through my personal giving and fundraising we are creating the NNAC in honor of my father; as a lasting tribute to my mother Doris, and sister Nancy who represent the millions of people who have lived through the hardship of caregiving; and my daughter Caroline, who symbolizes the hope and the future of the next generation," Nantz said. "It is our hope the NNAC will help discover what causes Alzheimer's, how to prevent it, how to treat it, and ultimately how to cure it – and that's our goal. We will do everything possible to raise awareness and develop resources for this Center to not only battle Alzheimer's disease but to bring additional focus to neurological trauma of all kinds." Baby fever replaces breaking news at KPRC 2

On the Beat with Mary Benton of KPRC 2, is one of the best TV blogs in Houston (that I had nothing to do with ;) ).

Benton says that five of the Channel 2 reporter/anchor types are pregnant!

Here is an example. Pictured is weekend anchor/reporter Daniella Guzman. Guzman, and her husband Hector, are pregnant with their first baby. The baby is due this summer.

Congrats to all the future new parents!

Former KPRC 2 anchor Jerome Gray now METRO PR dude

I should have guessed that something was going on at METRO (the bus operator for those outside of Houston) when many of their employees starting hunting for Jerome Gray on my blog.

Turns out the former KPRC 2 and KHOU 11 anchor is now the transportation agency's main spokesperson reports the Houston Press. They got the press release, I didn't.

Gray, as you might remember, was not renewed at KPRC earlier this year. We still have not seen an official replacement for Gray on the Channel 2 anchor set that I'm aware of.

Richard Connelly reports Gray will make $170,000 a year. Not quite big time anchor money, but I sure wouldn't complain.

Timing of the Apple and Steve Job's announcement

The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs: Insanely Different Principles for Breakthrough SuccessThe big news on Monday's holiday was Steve Jobs' announcement about taking a leave of absence from Apple due to medical reasons.

Houston executive employment lawyer Joe Ahmad of Houston’s Ahmad Zavitsanos and Anaipakos said that timing was not by accident.

“Companies and executives can learn a lot from how Apple handled the announcement of Steve Jobs’ medical leave today,” Ahmad said. “When you have someone like this who is the face of the company, it’s important to have your pitch together, to explain who will take that person’s place, and to let the market know the executive is coming back.

"Apple did all those things and shrewdly chose a day when the U.S. stock market is closed. They were smart to try to lessen the impact of knee jerk reactions. Though Jobs is notoriously private about his health, it is still a public issue and executives in the C-Suite like Jobs need to know how to plan carefully in these situations. Top level executives usually don’t come under the Family and Medical Leave Act but rather have to work this out with their boards ahead of time."

The company also timed the announcement ahead of the release of its quarterly earnings.

Ozzy Osbourne and Slash at Houston's Toyota Center

Quick note about the Ozzy Osbourne and Slash show at the Toyota Center in Houston Tuesday night (1/18/2011).

Great show. This is my fourth attempt to see Mr. Osbourne in concert. The first two were foiled due to weather. The third, because Ozzy broke his leg or something. Fourth was the lucky charm.

You always hear mixed reviews on Ozzy's voice, but lately reports say it is stronger. My thought, it sounded pretty good. The only issue is it took a few songs to get all the audio levels right...at least where our seats were.

For a guy in his early 60s, Ozzy sure is high energy. If you wanted to remain clean, don't sit in the first 15 rows. Ozzy likes to pull out a hose with foam and spray the audience (a trademark in his act). Don't worry, he sprays himself too.

Osbourne's backing band is awesome. Gus G is the new guitarist (replacing Zakk Wylde). Gus likes to shred and pose above a fan to bring out his maximum rock star looks in the big stage video screen. Rounding out the rhythm section are bassist Blasko and drummer Tommy Clufetos (both played with Rob Zombie previously). Lots of energy with these three too.

Ozzy pulled out songs from his new album, solo classics and Black Sabbath tunes. There was also an extended guitar solo/band jam which worked well.

Slash performs with Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy and backing band. Slash is Slash, enough said. Slash is supposedly off the sauce and you can tell. He seems slimmer and full of more energy than I have witnessed live in a few years. The band preforms Guns N' Roses, Slash's Snakepit, Velvet Revolver and new solo album songs.

Kennedy is a good singer. He nails the Guns N' Roses tunes with his own style while not totally replicating Axl Rose. He has more trouble pulling off Scott Weiland Velvet Revolver songs. Our seat mates agreed that what Kennedy is lacking is stage presence. He might be able to sing, but he isn't too interesting on stage (especially considering who he is covering).

Does Kennedy feel his job is to support Slash and not upstage him? Maybe. But Slash is now a legend and he has played with two great front men and clearly held his own then. Enough already though...the original Guns N' Roses lineup must reunite. Just from watching the latest rock news, I think things are lining up for this to happen (Duff plays a few songs with Axl in London, Slash is nicer to Axl in the press). But the classic GNR lineup has an appetite for destruction so don't hope too much!

FOX: KRIV 26 anchor Mike Barajas is on vacation

UPDATE 2/9
Anchor Mike Barajas off Fox 26 KRIV website

Many people connected with Fox 26 KRIV have contacted me to say that main anchor Mike Barajas is no longer with the station.

Also, the spokesperson addressed other Fox 26 talent rumor departures. I was told these rumors are untrue. As a result, I will not even bring up the name I was told.

KPRC 2 news director Rick McFarland steps down to assistant news director

Straight from the pages of mega-agent Rick Gevers, KPRC 2 news director Rick McFarland is reportedly stepping down to assistant news director. Assistant ND is the job McFarland held for 10 years until he was upped to news director in 2009. According to his online bio, McFarland started at the station in June 1980 in the sports department and has moved up through the years.

That means there is an opening for the KPRC 2 news director position according to Gevers, so that means no one has been appointed to that gig just yet. I've only communicated with McFarland once, he seemed like a really nice guy.

This makes me wonder what happened to current assistant news director Kathy Williams? She landed at KPRC 2 after leaving KRIV 26 as news director in 2009.

Mike Barajas leaves Fox 26 KRIV?

UPDATE 2/9
Anchor Mike Barajas off Fox 26 KRIV website

UPDATE 1/18/2011
FOX: KRIV 26 anchor Mike Barajas is on vacation

The emails started coming in after midnight Saturday morning and went into the night. Sorry I am only posting this now, but I was busy watching my son and reporting on Texas gun owner fears after the Arizona shooting.

I am told by multiple sources connected with Fox 26 KRIV that main anchor Mike Barajas is no longer with the station. His last show was the Friday 9pm newscast. There was supposedly no mention about his departure on TV. Barajas announced his departure after the show to a surprised staff.

According to Barajas' online bio, he's been with FOX since 1986. He started out as the weekend anchor and was later promoted to anchoring the midday newscast. In 1992, he was promoted to the main newscast FOX 26 News at 9. Before KRIV, Barajas was a reporter for KPRC.

And as I have written before, KTRK 13 anchor Erik Barajas is Mike's nephew. Once again, Houston will only know what it is like to have one Barajas on TV news.

I have been told various reasons as to why he is leaving, including news about other possible talent departures coming up. Will try to sort it out with the Fox Broadcasting Monday. Stay tuned.

(Thanks to all that sent me this info and even complained I did not have it up Saturday...I know you care!)

Houston houses getting higher foreclosures numbers

I haven't thrown up any of my KIAH 39 stories lately. Not really sure if you like crime related stories.

Here is one I did Thursday that affects your wallet. Talk to the experts and they'll tell you how Houston's house foreclosure rate is up (CoreLogic echoes that too). It's really starting to hit a certain type of neighborhood in the Houston-area.  We found one in Katy. READ: Houston foreclosures on the rise

Photog Ben Lutman moves down Westpark from KTRK 13 to KIAH 39

Call me a lucky guy. Ben Lutman was the last photographer I shot a story with at KTRK 13 and now I get to work with him at KIAH 39. That's right...Ben has moved down Westpark from KTRK 13 to KIAH 13!

As you can tell from the photo, Lutman likes to go pretty far to get a story. Here he is in Iraq covering the initial 2003 invasion. That vest came in handy while he was avoiding getting shot. He certainly deserved that Emmy win (one of many by the way)!

Lutman is a super nice guy, who works hard and actually cares about the story. Plus he's cool to be around.

Glad to have him on board. It's beginning to be a TV family reunion for me at KIAH 39 with Lutman and former KTRK 13 Undercover photographer David DeFranchi.

It almost makes me feel like another one of my former KTRK 13 colleagues could be showing up at KIAH 39 soon...

Fancast XFINITY TV: This online service expands the video content by giving customers easy access to cable TV shows, movies and independently produced content.
Increased Internet Speeds: Currently offer fastest Internet access speeds (50 Mbps) in Houston and the upgrade will enable faster speeds (up to 100 Mbps) in the near future.

More from the press release:

In order to be able to offer XFINITYservices, Comcast will move its standard/expanded basic channels to an all-digital format. The vast majority of Comcast customers already subscribe to a digital level of service and have a digital cable box in the home. These customers will receive all of the XFINITY services automatically and at no additional cost. For customers without a digital set top box, the company is providing free digital equipment for up to three TV’s (one interactive digital cable box and two digital adapters) for no additional cost. Current Digital Cable customers should also consider requesting free DTAs for additional sets in the home that are currently using an analog outlet without a box. Comcast will continue to offer limited basic, which includes all broadcast channels, in an analog format.

Comcast is making it simple to secure up to three free digital adapters by simply going online at www.comcast.com/digitalnow or by calling 1-877-634-4434. They are easy to install and directions are included. Customers may also stop by any service center and visit the digital adapter kiosk to place their request online or via phone. There is no shipping or handling charge. Additional adapters, after the initial three provided at no cost by the company, are $1.99 per month.

The digital adapter is a one-way device that lets Comcast replicate the analog experience for expanded basic customers by giving them access to the digitized versions of basic and expanded basic channels. The adapter is a very small device (measuring approximately 4” x 4” x 1.5”) that easily plugs into any television set and uses a new Comcast-provided remote control to navigate through the channel lineup.

“For those analog only customers who will be transitioning to our enhanced offerings, this will be an incredibly simple process,” said Doug Guthrie, senior vice president for the Comcast Houston Region. “Customers will only need an adapter to make the switch – they will not need to change the level of service they have in order to get these channels.”

The Woodlands and neighboring communities will be the first to have access to new XFINITY services beginning this month. Look for the Houston area upgrade to be fully completed in a year.

KTXA 21 in DFW boosts signal, TV viewers need to rescan channel

KTXA 21 in Dalls-Fort Worth is getting a signal boost for over the air (OTA)/antenna viewers. This supposed improvement will require DFW TV viewers to rescan the channel:

TXA 21 is about to beef up its over-the-air signal for viewers who watch with antennas.
The improvements will mean a stronger signal that covers more area. Crews have been working on the TXA 21 tower for several weeks in preparation for the switch, which will happen on Friday, January 14, 2011.
The increased signal strength should not affect cable and satellite TV subscribers. But people who receive TXA 21 using antennas will need to re-scan their digital TV tuners or converter boxes on January 14.
The stronger signal will improve reception for many people who have had reception issues since the switch to digital television in June, 2009. READ MORE

KTRK 13's Ted Oberg has a brother on The Onion SportsDome

Monday morning on NPR's Morning Edition, there was a story about the new Comedy Central show called The Onion SportsDome. Sounds funny.

Yes, The Onion in the title is actually The Onion satirical news group. And if you know anything about The Onion, you will guess this is a show, not so much about teams and games, but about parodying ESPN and the overall sports media culture.

Turns out there is a small Houston connection to this new show. I've been bringing you news about Matt Oberg's acting career for years. You could say I am his biggest fan in Houston. Well, only that I am really the second. His biggest Houston fan is his brother, KTRK 13 reporter Ted Oberg. I figured Matt's last name might give that link away ahead of time.

Houston news producer says 'adios' to the TV news world

After almost 14 years in the television news business, Houston producer Sara Boyles has left for the corporate world. She is now a communication and pursuits strategist for Ernst and Young as of Monday. So how was the first day?

"It is definitely a change of pace being in a more corporate setting," Boyles admitted to the mikemcguff.com blog. "I needed new clothes, as well as a new sleeping schedule. As a producer, I never would have started my first day in Houston and ended it in Chicago."

Yeah, probably not.

Boyles started at KBMT in Beaumont, followed by KMOL (now WOAI) in San Antonio, KTRK 13 (where I met her) and up until recently KHOU 11.

Her first year in the business she won an AP award for best newscast and in her last year, she once again won the same. Nice way to go out. Congrats Sara!

Former KHOU 11 news director Keith Connors joins WTHR 13

My email was blowing up Friday afternoon with the news that former KHOU 11 news director Keith Connors joined WTHR 13 Indianapolis, IN for the same job. At the time my focus was on my KIAH 39 live shot.

But better late than never. Here is part of the nice write up the WTHR website had on Connors' new gig:

During Keith's tenure in Houston, KHOU enjoyed some of the highest ratings in station history. The station also won an impressive majority of broadcast journalism's highest honors including two national Emmy awards, two duPont Columbia awards, a Peabody award and six National Edward R. Murrow awards including the 2010 Overall Excellence Award.

"I'm honored to join the staff at WTHR," said Connors. "It's exciting to be part of a newsroom and a television station with such a rich tradition of quality journalism and community service. I look forward to working with this talented group of journalists to continue WTHR's tradition of excellence on air, on-line and on the go."

Keith's newsroom was put to the ultimate test when Hurricane Ike struck the Texas coast in 2008. It was an unprecedented disaster for Houston and KHOU received accolades for its coverage and service to the community. While other local stations focused coverage on damage and destruction, KHOU chose to focus on getting residents help and support in the wake of this major weather catastrophe. Keith helped develop partnerships with local radio stations, satellite radio and satellite television providers to get information and help to local residents as quickly as possible.

Connors has worked at WCNC Charlotte, WVEC Norfolk, WORK Rochester, WKRN Nashville and WTOL and WDHO in Toldeo.

RIP KNWS 51 Houston

Remember when KNWS 51 Houston signed on the air and was an all news format? This was back in the 1990s. That's why the station had those awesome news sounding call letters!

Shout out to my main man and KNWS anchor Steve Ottesen. Ottesen is still in the Houston TV biz. After Channel 51 he worked at the Baylor College of Medicine for a while but now works at KIAH 39.

Now 51 is KYAZ and is a Spanish language station. Let's toast the station's rebirth!

740 KTRH's Michael Berry comments on Houston TV news

740 KTRH's Michael Berry knows the Houston media scene. Either from being a radio talk show host or sitting on the Houston city council, Berry has witnessed all sides.

That's why I want to spotlight a comment Berry left on my blog about the Houston TV news investigative world. It was on my post "KTRK 13 Undercover's Wayne Dolcefino says stop copying my work."

Here it is:

Wayne Dolcefino does the best investigative pieces in Houston. Period. He doesn't always do the best "investigations", but he presents them in the most entertaining style. Say what you will, his style is distinctive, unique, and entertaining. He tells stories, in a manner that makes you wonder if he isn't half laughing while he does so. He's been the best in town for years.

I will say, though, that Greenblatt at 11 has done some good work, as has Jeremy Rogalski on frequent occasion of late. Rogalski's pieces have been notable in the past year. Channel 2's Arnold & Dean do some good work, but it seems they have to file too many to be as in-depth.

Give Wayne his due: imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Ask anyone inside the news biz, and they'll tell you that Wayne's pieces are must-watch.

I sat on City Council for 6 years, and I'll tell you that elected officials quaked when he walked in. There was fear that he had targeted you, because once he did he would lay it all bare.

I've seen how he goes about investigating, the extent to which he chases down sources, and I admire how he weaves it all together. His multiple day pieces are good for ratings, and they're just good tv.

Mike, thanks for writing about this. This is the sort of thing that people need to know about, and maybe this will end the ugly practice.

KSAT 12 takes Justin Horne, KIAH 39 gets Jene' Rockwood

Here's a post that will interest both Houston and San Antonio readers.

You might have noticed KIAH 39 weekend meteorologist Justin Horne has disappeared from the Houston TV airwaves. That's because he is now the relief meteorologist for KSAT 12 in San Antonio.

"I can truly say that I will miss Houston, but San Antonio has been great to me so far," Horne told the mikemcguff.com blog. "KSAT has been a wonderful place to work, and I am excited about my move, and the opportunity to stay in my home state of Texas."

Horne previously worked at KSAN in San Angelo and KMID in Midland.

If I am not mistaken, KSAT is the number 1 station in The Alamo City. It is also owned by Post-Newsweek which makes it the sister station to KPRC 2.

So who has taken over Horne's weekend weather duties at KIAH 39? It's meteorologist Jene' Rockwood. She previously worked at WKRG in Mobile, Alabama and KTRE Lufkin.

WKRG viewers will know her as Jene' Young. Yes, you do recognize her new last name, Rockwood. That's because Jene' came to Houston to marry former KIAH 39 reporter Mike Rockwood.

Top 10 mikemcguff.com blog posts for 2010 by reader traffic

Welcome to 2011! It's become a yearly tradition that I run through the top 10 mikemcguff.com posts of the year. Here is the list for 2010.

This goes in order with number 1 on the list being the post that got the most reader views.

KPRC 2 meteorologist Jonathan Novack is leaving
It was no doubt the year of ABC's The Bachelorette contestant Jonathan "The Weatherman" Novack. And here in Houston we knew Novack simply as the weekend weather guy at KPRC 2. Traffic to this post spiked every time the show aired Monday night and folks from around the country looked for info on the guy who wasn't afraid to cry on TV.

Nefertiti Jaquez lands at KPRC 2 Houston
Nefertiti Jaquez is hot. Yes, I said it. So of course her arrival to Houston's KPRC 2 post makes her my number 2 on the list. I interviewed her on Garf's 950 KPRC show and finally met her when I consulted for KPRC 2...and yes, she seems very nice in addition to heating up our TV sets every night. In fact I always see a spike in people searching for her on my blog after her 10pm news appearances.

VIDEO: Erin Anthony's tearful goodbye from Fox 26 KRIV traffic beat
Shame on me. I never knew TV viewers loved their traffic anchors soooo much. I first saw it a few years ago when Darby Douglas was shown the door at KHOU 11. Erin Anthony's departure from KRIV 26 upset many viewers in 2010. They are still commenting about missing her each morning.

Houston TV meteorologist on ABC's The Bachelorette 2010?
The first Novack post was a routine one. He was leaving KPRC 2 but wouldn't tell me where he was going. This was the one I posted the next day when a reader commented about his The Bachelorette casting rumors.

Maria Todd and Brad Booker team up for Mix 96.5 KHMX mornings
When former 104.1 KBRE morning host Maria Todd returns to Houston, it's going to be big news. Mix 96.5 KHMX hyped up her co-host debut. This was it.

Maria Todd on Mix 96.5 KHMX, but where's Sam Malone?
Naturally radio listeners wanted to know where Sam Malone was when his former 104.1 KRBE co-host returned to Houston. Everyone just kind of assumed they would team up again. Not the case. Sam is now the morning show host on 700 KSEV.

Sam Malone of KRBE, KHMX talks to Mike McGuff
This was a post from early 2009 that won't go away. People still find it when researching Sam Malone.

Pat Gray leaving Houston's 700 KSEV for Glenn Beck
When former Houston talk show host Pat Gray left for the national Glenn Beck radio show, it got noticed around here. When he fills-in for Beck on the radio, that's when the Beck listeners always start researching more about Gray and find this post.

Former KHOU 11 anchor Lisa Foronda overcomes demons
Former KHOU 11 anchor Lisa Foronda hasn't been on the air in years, but that doesn't stop people from wanting to know what she's doing. Now that's some popularity. I've talked to Foronda about this, she made it clear to me she does not want to have anything to do with the spotlight. In this article, she used some of her star power to promote the running group she is involved with. Then disappeared again.

KUBE-TV channel 57 Houston programming schedule
Channel 57 The KUBE is a new Houston station playing retro shows and I would say based on my traffic, it's a hit. KUBE viewers seem to come to my blog to mostly chat about how much they like the station or sometimes complain about it.
