Chris Chicago of NGEN Radio has died

Chris Chicago, the morning host of Hope Media Group's NGEN Radio, has died after battling stage 4 melanoma cancer in his lungs.

Chicago leaves behind his wife Jessica of 20 years, plus four children.

"Our hearts our broken," NGEN Radio posted online.   "Let’s continue Chris Chicago’s legacy by being a source of joy, kindness, and a light in the darkness. Please join us in prayer for Chris’ family in this difficult time."

A representative with Hope Media Group tells me the station's plans to honor Chicago are currently being finalized. 

In addition to NGEN Radio, Chicago worked for SOFLOW RADIO as a program director and WayFM on a night shift.

Chicago joined NGEN back in 2016 as a morning show host and production director.

"In my opinion, KSBJ is one of the greatest, most well-done Christian stations in the country," Chicago said in 2016.  "To be a part of their NGEN Radio brand with its history-making Top 40 format is a such a fantastic and exciting opportunity for me."

By 2019, Chicago was the program director and afternoon host.  He later returned to mornings after Marcus Sullivan left in 2024.

"If I could describe Chris Chicago, I’d say he was 'the big homie,' Sullivan told mikemcguff.com. "A friend to so many that never took himself too seriously. He’d give constructive criticism to help upcoming artists get better, he always would go out of his way to pray no matter the situation or circumstance we were in. A true man of God, father and husband. A gem to the kingdom that really will be missed."

Before moving to Houston, Chicago spent 11 years living in Nashville, working for stations such as 107.5 The River WRVW and WayFM Nashville.

Best known for his top-rated, nationally syndicated Christian hip-hop show and his work within the Christian music industry, Chicago started his career in Christian radio at 16. 

He started his career at KLYT-FM  Albuquerque.

Marcus Sullivan joins KTSU 90.9 and The Vibe

Marcus Sullivan is the new Operations Manager for 90.9 KTSU The Choice HD1 and Programming Manager for The Vibe HD2.

He takes over the role vacated by Madd Hatta, who recently took over afternoons at Majic 102.1 KMJQ  after Lawrence “Funky Larry” Jones (aka “Uncle Funky”) left. 

Sullivan has been the morning show host for NGEN since May 2019.

He previously worked for 93.7 The Beat as the affiliate producer of the syndicated morning show The Breakfast Club. 

The University of Houston grad and former Cougar football player also has Power 97.5, 104.1 KRBE, Party 104.9, Praise 92.1, FOX 26 KRIV, and a weekly segment with TMZ on his resume.

KTSU The Choice HD1 programs Jazz, Classic R&B, Blues, and Gospel music from the campus of Texas Southern University. Launched in 2020 to target Millennials/Gen Z radio listeners, The Vibe offers a mix of Hip Hop, R&B, and Neo-Soul.

HOUSTON, Texas (September 16, 2021) Hope Media Group’s NGEN Radio announces transition from the 91.7 FM signal to focus exclusively on digital distribution.

The Houston-based station continues to reach the next generation with positive content and music to impact the world for good through the station, app, and website. This change comes as the station’s audience has changed where and how they are consuming their music and content since the station launched 11 years ago.

Today, NGEN Radio’s listeners are consuming their favorite content digitally on platforms like Apple Music and Spotify rather than traditional FM radio stations. 

The opportunity to reach young adults more effectively by solely focusing on digital distribution is far greater today than when NGEN was originally envisioned. This better positions NGEN to meet this audience where they are and provide for them the content they want and need.

“We currently have thousands of listeners streaming and listening via the app,” shares NGEN’s Morning Show host, Marcus Sullivan. “It’s important we focus on that audience and bring them more content than just music. People have been talking about streaming for years and NGEN is stepping up to the plate. We are excited for this new direction!”

I totally missed this one from back in August. Editor Pat Schwab retired from KPRC after 37 years.
