Wayne Dolcefino still winning

Former KTRK 13 Undercover investigator Wayne Dolcefino is still winning awards for his journalistic work. This time the honor comes from the Houston Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners concerning his Harris County Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino stories:

Wayne Dolcefino
Wayne Dolcefino
Wayne Dolcefino, President of Dolcefino Communications and former chief investigative reporter for Houston’s KTRK TV, has been named the winner of the inaugural Greater Houston Fraud Impact Award by the Houston Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Dolcefino’s investigation of Harris County Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino uncovered a failure to report cash campaign contributions, diversion of money from the Constable’s youth charity and improper use of deputies in the serving of eviction notices. All of these matters contributed to the indictment of Constable Trevino on four felony charges including misapplication of fiduciary property, abuse of official capacity and two counts of tampering with government records. Upon learning of the award, Mr. Dolcefino stated “It is a huge honor to be thanked for my life’s passion, fighting the bad guys. It is especially rewarding because it comes from the real investigative heroes, the Certified Fraud Examiners who work to expose waste and fraud every day for their clients all over the Houston area.”

Each year the Houston Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners will issue the Greater Houston Fraud Impact Award to the individual who made outstanding, significant contributions to the worldwide effort to prevent, deter or detect fraud. In the spirit of the Houston Chapter’s slogan United Locally to Fight Fraud Globally, the winner must reside in the Greater Houston area. Mr. Dolcefino will be presented his award at the June 11 meeting of the Houston Chapter of the ACFE at The Hess Club at 5430 Westheimer Road.

The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) bill itself as the world’s largest anti-fraud organization and premier provider of anti-fraud training and education. It claims more than 65,000 members.

Mike McGuff talks to Fox 26 about free TV in Houston

Houston weather, traffic, news | FOX 26 | MyFoxHouston

Here is video of my Fox 26 KRIV debut from Tuesday night's 9pm newscast (embedded above). I'm talking Houston TV with Ned Hibberd and Bob Martin "The Accountant to the Stars."

If you look closely, you might even see some TV anchors from other stations thrown in.

My energy level was a little low because, as I blogged yesterday, I had a sick kid asleep in another room. Gotta be quiet for the kids! I certainly wasn't as hyped up as I was during my first live shot at KIAH 39 where people thought I said something I didn't (I'm such a stinker in the quest to get younger demos).

My TV brothers and sisters always know I'll help them out when they need a good soundbite on media, tech, social media...etc.

KPRC apologizes for Formula One Monaco Grand Prix dump

KPRC general manager Jerry Martin takes to the web to improve race fan relations

A follow up to a post I wrote Sunday. KPRC Local 2 general manager Jerry Martin wrote a letter of apology online to Houston Formula One fans concerning the station's decision not to run Monaco Grand Prix coverage.

As I wrote Sunday, F1 fans were very angry with KPRC since the NBC affilate  did not air the race and went after the station on its Facebook pages.

Here is the letter:

"I wanted to let you know that we heard from many Formula One fans this weekend regarding our decision to air our local news in lieu of the Monaco Grand Prix. We will reevaluate the decision for next year's race. That evaluation will not only be based off ratings data, but also the amount of viewer confusion caused by not airing the race after NBC promotes the coverage heavily in their programming.

Our rationale for not airing the race was based on KPRC being a "news comes first" local television station, which includes holiday weekends. That is why you will see us break into popular programming to air breaking news or severe weather alerts. We also took into account the Houston market under indexes in the national ratings when it comes to motor sports; and, the race was available live via the web and on a delayed basis on NBC Sports Network. I know this rationale does little to assuage your emotions regarding this matter since you are fans of F1, however, I do understand what it means to be a fan of racing. In my past, I was on the Indy 500 Festival Board and attended the race every year, and in some years with a pace car. I also went to the F1 races in Indy and witnessed firsthand the passion of F1 fans.

So I can honestly tell you we will give it very close assessment for 2014-2016 races and make our decision public well in advance of the race.

Also, we are airing the Formula One Race (Canada) on Tuesday June 9 at 1 p.m., the Formula One (USA, Austin, TX) on November 17 at 12:30 p.m. and Formula One (Brazil) on November 24 at 10 a.m."

Jerry Martin

We'll see if racing fans forgive the station. So far the comments beneath the letter are negative.

"News comes first" huh? So infomericals pre-empt one of the greatest live sporting events of the year. Makes tons of sense. You made the wrong decision and alienated many of your viewers," wrote commenter Doug Carroll on click2houston.com.

UPDATE
The Austin American-Statesman has reported on KPRC's decision not to air the race:

A spokesperson with NBC Sports said KPRC was the only major market not to air the race.

“The decision lies with the station, however, the network is disappointed the race did not air in Houston,” the spokesperson said.

Samica Knight promoted as new KTRK abc13 anchor; Katie McCall to report

Samica Knight plays switch-a-roo with Katie McCall to become new KTRK abc13 weekend morning anchor

UPDATE MARCH 07, 2014
Katie McCall exits KTRK abc13

 photo samicaknight_1_zps07616763.jpg

This post is brought to you by my son throwing up in the car last night so that means we're going to make this post a fast one and there might be fewer posts the rest of the week.

Young people coming up in the broadcast business say things are not official until they appear in mikemcguff.com. I appreciate the compliment, but the following is official because it was added to the newscast open.

It's been coming for weeks, and now KTRK abc13 reporter Samica Knight is the new weekend morning co-anchor for longtime staffer Elissa Rivas.

Knight returned to KTRK in 2010 as a reporter (she had interned at the ABC owned station in the mid-2000s). Before that she worked at WHP CBS 21 in Harrisburg, PA, KXXV Waco and KSAN San Angelo.

Since Knight arrived at KTRK, I've heard she would be a rising star and her quick elevation in job status proves that. Will she be a main anchor at the station in a few years? (See what I did, if that happens in the future, then I can claim I predicted it years ago. If not, no one will remember my prediction anyway.)

As for Katie McCall, who has been anchoring in that spot since 2009, I hear she wants to have normal weekday hours, so that's when you'll find her reporting from now on.

McCall returned to Houston after working at CBS owned Chicago station WBBM. Before that Houston viewers will remember her time at Channel 39 KHCW KIAH.

Let me pull a psychic moment like Shawn Spencer on USA's Psych (Don't you think actor James Roday could play Jim Morrison in a biopic?) and predict I could be updating this post by the end of the year.

Katie McCall exits KTRK abc13

KTXH launches Movies! network on 20.2

KTXH launched the Movies! network this morning on 20.2. There has been a teaser graphic advertising the network's launch for days.

The network is a joint venture between Fox Television, who owns KTXH and Fox 26 KRIV, and Weigel Broadcasting broadcasting out of Chicago. According to Wikipedia, Weigel has an interest for now in This TV and Me-TV which also show old TV/movies on .2 channels around the country.

Movies! first broadcast was the 1975 western Take a Hard Ride.

In Texas, the channel airs on Fox-owned stations:

Austin, TX KTBC-TV 7.2
Dallas/Fort Worth, TX KDFI-TV 27.2

KTXH's .3 channel is MundoFox, Fox's Spanish language network.

This is a good sign since neither Houston Fox owned station, channel 20 or 26, have had sub-channels. At least KTXH now has some, so here's hoping for something on KRIV in the future.

KPRC 2 yanks the Monaco Grand Prix for news; racing fans revolt

UPDATE 5/28/2013 1:30PM
KPRC apologizes for Formula One Monaco Grand Prix dump

Here is a new thing for a TV station to have to deal with.

KPRC 2 did not air Formula One’s most prestigious race, the Monaco Grand Prix Sunday morning. From the complaints I'm reading on Facebook, the station aired its usual Sunday morning newscast and other regular programming instead (UPDATE: In place of Today and Meet the Press, viewers say infomercials ran since NBC was broadcasting the race and did not produce those shows this week).

Houston viewers are so revved up, because there have been commercials running on NBC (and KPRC) advertising the race for weeks apparently. In fact, this broadcast is considered special, because according to Autoweek, the race marks the first time this season that an F1 race was to be broadcast live on American network TV.

As I said in the first sentence, the social media thing is a new kind of PR crisis issue for a TV station to have to address. In the past, all viewers could do is burn out the station's telephone switchboard or fill up its email boxes.  Before that it would have been a sternly written letter!  Now viewers can publicly hijack the station's Facebook page.

For example, KPRC posted "What does Memorial Day mean to you?" on Facebook and answers like "In Houston it means no F1 race. Thank you KPRC!!!!!!" or "Boycott KPRC, watch ABC and FOX - they understand the racing community! thanks for messing up the greatest day in racing KPRC!" are coming in.

In fact almost every single post on the top of the KPRC Facebook page has angry comments concerning Formula One racing not airing.

To its credit, KPRC did the right thing and addressed the issue on Facebook with a link to watch online:

The decision was made not to air the Monaco Grand Prix on KPRC. We apologize to anyone who is missing the race. Here is a link to watch it online. It will also replay on NBC Sports.

Not sure this will put the brakes on the angry racing comments though.

Apparently channel 2 has pulled racing from Houston TV in the past. Reader Michael Galindo told mikemcguff.com that it happened with NASCAR back in 2001.

In case you missed it, Nico Rosberg won the race according to the New York Times.

UPDATE
Did Fox 26 KRIV take a swipe at KPRC later in the day on Facebook after all the morning controversy?:

Just an FYI. We will be showing the NASCAR Sprint Cup race LIVE at 5pm (the green flag drops around 5:15pm). Fox 26 News at 9 will be shown after the race. We've been promoting the race as live, and we'll show it live.

Bob Allen in the ratings driver seat

Bob Allen
KHOU 11's Bob Allen (Photo credit: www.WiredIn.cc.)

Bob Allen took time away from the Houston sports scene to be one of the 15,000 guests at the Lakewood Yacht Club earlier this month for the 18th Annual Keels and Wheels Concours d'Elegance in Seabrook.

People in the TV sports community are talking about KHOU's move up in the 2013 May TV sweeps period with many saying Allen must have made a difference along with David Paul on the weather chroma key wall. The big boss at KHOU apparently agrees.

“The critical thing is that we did not lose in that (second) quarter-hour,” KHOU station president and general manager Susan McEldoon told the Houston Chronicle. “We have typically increased our lead-in (from CBS’ 9 p.m. show) but lose it in the second quarter-hour. That did not happen (in May). We have made some changes in the newscast, and viewers have responded.”

Back to Keels and Wheels, 300 hand-selected classic automobiles and vintage wooden boats were on hand including Babe Ruth's 1948 Lincoln Continental, Margaret Dunning's 1931 Model A, the Houston Grand Prix's Indy Car and the international debut of the Allard J2X MkII.

Keith Martin, Publisher of Sports Car Market Magazine and star of the TV program, "What's My Car Worth?," served as the Master of Ceremonies for the fifth consecutive year alongside the 2013 Grand Marshal Al Unser, Jr.

May sweeps 2013 results for Houston and other Texas markets

May 2013 sweeps are over and results for Texas have started to come in as you have probably seen on this blog starting yesterday.

I'm very glad I don't have to pore through the reams of mind numbing numbers. It would be like that college project you blew off until the morning it was due.

In the past, stations just said we are number one at 10pm or 3am (oh, wait, no station has a 3am newscast...yet). But now stations break down ratings by adults 25-54, adults 18-49, weekday, seven day, men, women, left handed people and those who like Fast And Furious 6 vs Hangover 3 (OK, I might of made some of those up).

In Houston, we can see the 5pm and 10pm news numbers broken down by age demos and Univision 45 KXLN claims the number 1 spot on it all. You can also see here that KHOU has moved up since February to win the 10pm in the English speaking TV station world (although KTRK abc13 did win the 10pm in adults 25-54). As for the English speaking TV station world 5pm numbers, KTRK wins both demos, KPRC comes in second, Fox 26 wins the younger demo, and KHOU wins the older demo.

As David Baron joked, "So those are the numbers. Now get ready for the “We’re No 1!!!!” promos." He has a very in-depth and humorous look at the Houston May numbers. Now that you get a sense of how they are broken down, you can see how stations claim to be number one on the same newscasts.

According to Baron, when it comes to morning news, KTRK's historically dominant newscast is at top households wise, but slipping throughout the morning when you break it down by age demos. Fox 26 KRIV sent me morning numbers showing growth.

People have asked me for CW39 KIAH NewsFix numbers, and according to Barron, it has a 0.5 in households and a 0.3 in adults 25-54. I imagine it is doing better in 18-49 but Barron did not have those numbers listed.

Back to the number one promos...don't forget that some stations are now using Nielsen and a new company called Rentrack to get the ratings. That means they can look at which company gives them a higher footing and go with that one.

I have full ratings coverage for Dallas, Houston and San Antonio on my Texas TV sweeps page.

Nancy Zambrano leaves Fox 26 KRIV after months on the job

Fox 26 KRIV reporter Nancy Zambrano to leave the TV biz after a few months in Houston

Nancy Zambrano
Nancy Zambrano

UPDATE
Nancy Zambrano got back to me after I posted the original story:

"I have been reporting news for almost ten years, and have covered some amazing stories, and met wonderful people," Zambrano told mikemcguff.com. "Almost six of those years I have worked for the FOX TV family, which made my decision to get out even tougher. Personally, however, it’s the right move for me to leave the business at this time. The staff at FOX 26 is great. They are a truly nice team of people to work with and to work for, so I will miss them. I’ll also miss all the big-city things Houston has to offer and the friendly people I’ve met during my time here."

She will be working for a company in Austin called ShoreTel.

ORIGINAL POST
Nancy Zambrano is leaving Fox 26 KRIV after about four months on the job a FOX Television Stations representative confirmed to mikemcguff.com.

Multiple sources tell me this is an amicable split and that Zambrano is leaving the TV news business and Houston. I've heard she is possibly going back to Austin for a PR/marketing job.

If they're still as good as they used to be, I'd be going back for some Stubb's BBQ and ZTejas myself.

Zambrano came to Fox 26 KRIV as a reporter last February from sister station Fox 7 KTBC in Austin.

As I blogged a few months ago, before Austin Zambrano served as Reporter/Weekend Anchor for KMID-TV in Midland-Odessa, TX. Prior to that, she was Reporter/Weather Anchor for WUFT-TV at the University of Florida’s television station in Gainesville, FL. Zambrano began her career as an intern at various stations, including WCJB-TV in Gainesville, FL, WFOR-TV in Miami, FL and Univision Network in Miami, FL.

FOX Television Stations tells me Zambrano's last day is this Friday. Zambrano did not return my repeated requests for a comment.

Alex Cadelago has been named Vice President and Director of Sales for CBS RADIO's six stations in the Houston market. This appointment was announced

Cadelago will be responsible for managing the company’s monthly and annual sales objectives for the market as well as driving strategy to grow revenue on all six CBS Houston stations which include: KILT-AM, KILT-FM, KIKK-AM, KHMX-FM, KKHH-FM and KLOL-FM.

Sarah Frazier, Senior Vice President and Market Manager of CBS RADIO Houston, said, "Alex is a proven sales manager in the Houston market. Cadelago started his career in radio at KXYZ, 1320AM, in Houston during 1992. He spent time as a Local Sales Manager for MEGA prior to the station coming under the CBS umbrella in April of 2009. Alex was promoted to General Sales Manager after joining CBS, transitioned his team into the CBS culture and quickly gained credibility with his peers and the company. In 2011 Cadelago drove MEGA to the number one spot in the market for non-traditional revenue.

Wayne Dolcefino shows up on both KHOU and KPRC

Wayne Dolcefino shows up on KHOU, KPRC and the Houston Chronicle in a single day - one station with a 1 and a 3 was noticeably missing

Like Nielsen LPM measurements through the flat screen TV, so are the former KTRK anchors of our lives.

We should know the ultimate showman like Wayne Dolcefino wouldn't be content to just show up on one TV station, so he went to the city's main newspaper and on two Houston stations that were not KTRK abc13 during May 2013 sweeps.

The former 13 Undercover man started his day off in the Houston Chronicle where he said, “I miss what I used to do. I don’t miss working for Channel 13.”

We were all eagerly awaiting his KPRC story at 10pm, but first Wayne-O showed up on KHOU 11's 6pm newscast in his Dolcefino Communications role. This time, the former investigative reporter is involved in a smelly fight brewing in Hempstead that also involves attorney Rusty Hardin.

photo waynedolcefinokprc_zps45b9b1f9.jpgThen came the main event on KPRC 2's 10pm newscast after The Office series finale (yeah Michael Scott showed up of course) and some other show.

Joel Eisenbaum's report didn't really give us anymore insight than we can get from reading the pages of this very blog, but we did get a chance to see Dolcefino's house and the fact he slimmed down and looks healthier after leaving KTRK.

For whatever reason, Click2Houston.com is behind the times on letting users embed its video on other sites (at the time of this publishing the video wasn't up anyway), but I will link you to what looks like an online only version of the Dolcefino tale that seems to have different info from what was on TV.

"Channel 13 and I got divorced it was as simple as that. One thing I don't like people suggesting is that I'm retired. I didn't retire, I can't afford to be retired," Dolcefino told KPRC in the online story.

Man, Dolcefino seems pissed at KTRK. Glad there is no one else out there that seems angry at the ABC owned station. What? You mean there is someone else? Oh, a couple of more people?

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about former KTRK abc13 sports director Bob Allen quitting the station and then showing up on competitor KHOU 11 a few months later. That was followed by former KTRK abc13 weekend sportscaster Tim Melton giving his first post stroke interview on KHOU to Allen.

As I said last night on Twitter, it's been 5 minutes, any KTRK folks scheduled to appear on other TV station newscasts yet?

Wayne Dolcefino on KPRC 2

Wayne Dolcefino on KPRC 2 Thursday 10pm

 photo waynedolcefinokprc_zps45b9b1f9.jpg
Wayne Dolcefino on KPRC 2

***UPDATE 5/16/2013
Wayne Dolcefino shows up on both KHOU and KPRC

Former KTRK 13 Undercover investigative reporter Wayne Dolcefino will be interviewed on KPRC 2 Thursday night at 10pm fresh off his Katy ISD Board of Trustees election.

This follows former KTRK abc13 weekend sportscaster Tim Melton in his first post stroke TV appearance being interviewed by former KTRK abc13 sports director Bob Allen on his new station - KHOU 11 (this interview was a ratings winner from what I understand).

For those outside of Houston reading this I know it sounds confusing. It's become like a soap opera in market 10. People are asking questions about why all of these famous channel 13 employees are showing up all over the television dial. An anchor scorned type of thing...[cue the dramatic music].

I can play this game too. Here is my interview with former KTRK abc13 weatherman Ed Brandon. Since I'm not a TV station, I don't get a massive Nielsen ratings spike though.

According to the KPRC promo, investigative reporter Joel Eisenbaum sits down and grills "bad boy of Houston TV" Dolcefino about why he left KTRK abc13. I'll give you a preview with something I wrote in November.

Hey channel 2, you might be getting this exclusive TV news story (this is getting meta), but I'm the only one who has Wayne Dolcefino getting peed on. You can't take that away from me!

What's next? Shara Fryer will start anchoring the news somewhere too...oh wait that has already happened.

I gotta say this is the most I've watched any TV sweeps period in a very long time. As a 30 something male, it's not like I've been the target demographic for any TV station in years! Thanks for including me for once.

***UPDATE 5/16/2013
Wayne Dolcefino shows up on both KHOU and KPRC

Katherine Whaley named KHOU noon anchor

Not sure if/when it was officially announced, but Katherine Whaley named KHOU noon anchor in her online bio

 photo khou_whaley_noon_zps33b7afa7.jpg
Ron Trevino & Katherine Whaley

UPDATE JANUARY 22, 2014
KHOU 11 anchor shuffle 2014

UPDATE
Katherine Whaley got back with me and to her credit, before I posted this, I just missed her email. She told me she's been anchoring the noon since last summer. Shows you how much I know about Houston TV.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Katherine Whaley is the new KHOU 11 noon co-anchor with Ron Trevino.

Last week KHOU moved Whaley's bio up to the top of its website talent page. When I clicked on Whaley's bio, here is what I found:

Native Houstonian Katherine Whaley is passionate about covering stories in city as diverse and dynamic as Houston. You can find Katherine anchoring KHOU 11 News at Noon and helping drivers Beat the Traffic on KHOU 11 News This Morning.

I guess this is a new assignment, because I don't remember an announcement anywhere and I believe that show has generally been a solo anchor gig. Both KHOU and Whaley have been mum when it comes to my requests for information. I was also a little confused when I tuned in noon Monday to see Lily Jang and Tuesday Mia Gradney instead of Whaley (she was there Wednesday).

Guess me going to all the Houston TV website talent bio pages every 30 minutes and hitting refresh pays off.

According to her bio, Whaley grew up in West Houston, attended Memorial High School and graduated with a history degree from Rice University. She went on to work as an anchor and reporter at KLFY-TV in Lafayette, Louisiana, and KAVU-TV in Victoria, Texas. She then worked as an anchor, reporter and even weathercaster at KVBC-TV Las Vegas. Whaley hit the jackpot and was KHOU bound in 2009 where she replaced Darby Douglas in the morning traffic role.

Whaley's bio does not mention where she interned though, and that was at KTRK abc13 (I was working there at the time).

Speaking of the KHOU noon newscast, I could tell when new meteorologist Brooks Garner arrived because this post about Chita Johnson started to explode with traffic.

Drew Shirley hired as KHOU 11 sports producer from KPLC

KHOU 11 hires KPLC Lake Charles sports director Drew Shirley as producer

Drew Shirley
Drew Shirley
Drew Shirley has been hired as the new KHOU 11 sports producer from KPLC Lake Charles.

Bob Allen had publicly said he wanted his new sports department to have a sports producer. Apparently the station cut that position in 2009 leading to Giff Neilsen's departure.

"I'll be on air occasionally, but mainly working behind the scenes with Bob Allen to put together the daily sportscasts," Shirley told mikemcguff.com.
"I love being the sports guy here at KPLC, but after 11 months of commuting to Lake Charles, I am ecstatic about this new gig."

You might remember I wrote last year about Shirley taking the Sports Director role at KPLC Lake Charles, La. It was great for him to get a good job, but the native Houstonian's wife and kids remained here. He was having to commute back and forth on the weekend to see them!

Another thing about Shirley, he also has a law degree. As I wrote last summer, that means when Shirley wants an exclusive interview with an athlete, he brings along a pen and an ironclad contract they can't get out of (I'm kidding Drew, once again, please don't bring legal action against me!).
