How to give a great media interview: 5 tips

The following mikemcguff.com entry is a guest blog post by PR whiz Marsha Friedman. It's about how to be a good interview for a media story. This article is geared towards print, but it works for TV and radio news too.:

KTRK 13 photographer Johnny Rivera-MarquezSometimes I cringe when I hear people talk about “the media.” It sounds as if everyone in TV, radio, print and online press is a member of one fraternity that thinks and acts the same. There is a vast gulf between the daily life of a print journalist and the daily life of a radio show host. And there are many differences between radio hosts and TV producers.

They really shouldn’t be treated the same. That’s why I’ve written a booklet called 50 Tips to Make You A Great Radio Guest and a similar piece for TV. Now I am compiling interview tips for working with print and online journalists (which in many cases can be the same thing).

Here are the first five tips:

· Be Responsive – In TV and radio, interview times are pre-arranged (Mike McGuff note: TV and radio people need you fast too...like in an hour). However, print and online journalists typically have daily and weekly deadlines. When they call you, they need you right then! In many cases, journalists will reach out to several experts on a news item and then choose the one who is the better interview or whoever responded quickest (or a combination of the two). The more reliably you respond, the more likely they will call on you again.

· It’s Not About You – Most journalists are not interested in you, but rather the expert commentary you can provide. The more you use the words “I” and “my” the less likely they will use you as a source. When speaking to a reporter, keep in mind you are speaking to their audience, so keep your remarks centered on what their audience cares about and you’ll be quoted early and often.

· Read Before You Talk – If you get a call from a publication, take five minutes to go online and read a few of their stories. Look for their tone and approach, so your tone and approach will match. Also look for articles they wrote on your topic, so you can avoid duplicating what someone else said. Finally, read articles written by the journalist you’ll be speaking with. There is no better way to prepare for a print or online interview than to read the writings of the reporter interviewing you. You can discover his or her focus, audience and philosophy. The reporter can tell if you’ve read his or her articles through your comments and will respect you for having made the effort to prepare for them.

· Don’t Empty Your Notebook – Beat reporters – journalists who cover a particular topic or industry – tend to be experts in that field from their time covering it for their respective publications. They don’t need, nor do they want, your soup-to-nuts take on that topic. They need only a few quotes and opinions to round out their stories. Answer direct questions with direct answers, and get to the point quickly. There’s no need to tell the reporter everything you know, emptying your notebook of all your collected knowledge, in order to have a good interview. Allowing an interview to devolve into you talking about your total philosophy on a particular topic or business will result in your interview landing in the discard pile, and the reporter will likely seek a comment from your competitor instead.

· Be Professional – Reporters don’t call you to talk about the weather, last night’s TV, your kids, etc. You’d be surprised how many times I’ve come across people who think a little friendly chit chat can “grease the wheels.” If they engage you, that’s one thing. It’s entirely another if you waste their time with unwanted “schmoozing.” Most have deadlines to meet and their time is valuable. Many outlets are working with significantly smaller writing staff than a year ago. Respect their time and they’ll respect you.

There’s more to a good print interview and in the next two weeks I will share more tips. If you follow this advice, you’ll discover your interviewers will respond better to you, use more of the interview in their actual articles and maybe even call you back for more quotes when they work on other stories. At the end of the day, these tips will help you be prepared so that when your name is mentioned in the media, readers will know they are getting advice from someone who truly knows what he or she is talking about.

KRIV 26's 40 years celebrated with cake

Left to right Mike Iscovitz, Ruben Dominguez and Bob Martin.

You can’t have a birthday without a cake so Monday morning Fox 26 KRIV Morning Money Man Bob Martin aka "The Accountant to the Stars" brought in a cake to help celebrate the 40 years that the station has been on the air.

Note Mike doing the “40” with his hands.

According to Wikipedia, Channel 26 signed on for the first time on August 15, 1971 as KVRL. The second UHF station after Channel 39 KHTV. Four years after signing on, the call letters were changed to KDOG. Then obviously later to KRIV.

Metallica and Lou Reed team up for Lulu project

I never saw this coming. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth (former Metallica guitarist) has also alluded to the fact that he and Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson would like to team up with Metallica's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich for an album.

In what is sure to be one of the most talked-about alliances of the year, New York king of avant-rock Lou Reed has teamed up with best-selling hard rock band Metallica to record a brand-new album, entitled Lulu, which will be released by Warner Bros. Records on November 1st, 2011. The album was co-produced by Reed, Metallica, Hal Willner who has produced albums for Reed, Marianne Faithfull, and Laurie Anderson, among others and Greg Fidelman. Fidelman also mixed the record.

The idea for these two giants of modern music to work together was born after the 25th anniversary Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame concerts in New York City in October 2009. Metallica -singer/guitarist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo - played with Reed on Velvet Underground classics "Sweet Jane" and "White Light/White Heat." "We knew from then that we were made for each other," Reed says.

After that triumphant performance, Reed suggested they all make a record together. At first they planned to record an album of Reed's older material, what Ulrich describes as "some of Lou's lost jewels - songs that he felt he'd like to give a second spin, and we could do whatever it is we do to some of those songs." That idea "hung in the air for a couple of months." Then, a week or two before that session was to begin, "Lou called up and said, 'Listen, I have this other idea.'"

That idea was to record a series of songs Reed had written for American avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson and German theater group the Berliner Ensemble's production of the Lulu Plays, which premiered in Aprilat theTheatre am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin, founded by Bertolt Brecht. The songs are inspired by German expressionist Frank Wedekind's early 20th century plays Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box, and were a rewrite of Edgar Allan Poe's, The Raven, which emerged as a graphic novel on Fantagraphics Press.

Texas speed limit increase and other new laws

This September in the Lone Star State means the return of school, football and the enactment of nearly 1,500 new laws passed by Texas lawmakers. Androvett Legal Media & Marketing has compiled its list of the top 10 new Texas laws that take effect on Sept. 1, with comments from lawyers with related expertise.

1. Concussions in sports (HB2038): Any student-athlete showing signs of a concussion must be removed immediately from the game or practice and evaluated by doctor.

“This is a great step for the safety of student athletes in Texas,” says The Lanier Law Firm’s Gene Egdorf, who has successfully represented injured student athletes and their families. “The University Interscholastic League has had some safeguards for players showing concussion symptoms, but getting these student-athletes checked out by a physician will help ensure that they are fit to play.”

2. Paddling prevention (HB359): Parents may now forbid school districts from using corporal punishment on children.

“This is a small victory in the war to prevent child abuse,” says Jeff Rasansky, whose clients at the Rasansky Law Firm include families whose children who have suffered abuse from caregivers at daycare centers. “Many people are still surprised to learn that children are abused physically, emotionally or sexually by daycare or other child care providers like nannies, babysitters, family members or teachers.”

3. Funeral protests (HB718): Those who want to picket a Texas funeral must end their protests three hours before a funeral begins. Protestors also must wait for three hours to pass when funeral services conclude.

“This law is certain to be challenged on constitutional grounds,” says appellate lawyerRick Thompson, whose practice at Dallas-based Hankinson Levinger includes constitutional law.

4. Speedier roadways (HB1201/HB1353): Texas’ new top speed limit becomes 85 mph, and truckers will no longer have a lower nighttime speed limit. The 85 mph speed limit will be applied only to Texas roads deemed suitable by state officials.

“Even though the law says that the 85 mph speed limit will be permitted only on highways designed to accommodate travel at that speed, this doesn't account for human errors that we know are common in driving, as well as the mechanical failures that are bound to happen at such high speeds,” says Steven C. Laird, whose practice at The Law Offices of Steven C. Laird includes trucking wrecks caused by driver carelessness, sleep deprivation, intoxication, fires, bad brakes and other preventable events.

5. Rape tests (SB1616): This law creates a faster timetable for the DNA testing process, requiring police investigators to submit rape-kit evidence for lab review within 30 days of collection. Those labs must then test the samples within three months.

“There is no additional funding for this new law,” says Chuck Noteboom, whose practice at Noteboom – The Law Firm includes representing victims of sexual abuse and assaults in civil actions. “There’s little doubt it will cost more for investigators and taxpayer-funded crime labs – who are already understaffed – to expedite their workloads.”

6. AMBER alert expansion (HB1075): This law expands the use of AMBER alerts to help locate adults diagnosed with developmental disabilities.

“Many would be surprised to learn how common it is for adult caregivers to lose track of their developmentally disabled patients and relatives,” says Jeff Rasansky of the Rasansky Law Firm. “This law will employ the vast resources of the AMBER network to help find these individuals.”

7. Driver’s ed screening (HB2678): All instructors of driver’s education will be screened for felonies, including sex offenses, before they’re allowed to teach.

“This amounts to a Band-Aid on an amputation,” says Chuck Noteboom of Noteboom – The Law Firm. “If they really want to protect people, they should eliminate Texas’ statute of limitations on sexual assault charges, because 80 percent of all rapes go unreported, mostly due to shame and repressed memories.”

8. Don’t mess with H20 (HB451): The state will implement its “Don't Mess With Texas Water” program, and signage at major highway water crossings will feature a toll-free hotline to report polluters. “The goal here is fiscal efficiency,” says Houston lawyer Todd Mensing of Ahmad Zavitsanos & Anaipakos, who represents Harris County in pollution cases. “These are lean budgetary times. This is a low-cost, but potentially highly effective deterrent for illegal dumping, which is a growing public health concern in this state.”

9. Bar violence (HB2707): The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission or a county judge will be able to refuse to issue or renew alcohol-sales permits to bars with a history of bar fights or other violence.

“This new law puts a premium on each bar not just adopting, but rigorously implementing employee training and enforcing responsible retailer policies, which is a big part of my practice,” says Andy Siegel from Shackelford Melton & McKinley, whose practice includes alcoholic beverage regulation. “It also means that bar and restaurant owners will need legal counsel to help design preventive programs and be ready to act to challenge any alleged violations in order to allow for continued business operations.”

10. Pork chopper (HB716): Texas landowners may lease helicopter seats for feral hog and coyote hunts on their property.

“I am very much in favor of helicopter shooting of feral hogs,” says Curtis L. Frisbie Jr.<, an antitrust and commercial litigation lawyer at Gardere Wynne Sewell, and an avid hunter. “They are a pest and a menace, and cause a lot of property damage. Ask any Texas rancher. The National Rifle Association says that feral hogs cause an estimated $400 million in damages in Texas every year. Texas has the largest population of feral hogs in the US. It is estimated by some that there are 4 million feral hogs in U.S.That number will only increase.”

Fernando Perez is new program director at Mega 101 FM

Looks like a new person is in charge of Mega 101 KLOL over at CBS Houston:

Fernando Perez has been named as the new Program Director for Mega 101 FM, it was announced today by Pio Ferro, CBS RADIO Vice President of Hispanic Programming. The appointment is effective Tuesday, September 6.

Perez brings more than 12 years of Hispanic radio experience to Mega 101 FM. He most recently worked for Univision in Los Angeles as Program Director for KLVE, which is the most listened to Spanish language station in the city. Prior to KLVE, he was the Operations Manager for the Univision Cluster in San Francisco. Perez also had a two-year stint in Houston when he launched KROI-FM.

“Having worked with Fernando before, I know firsthand his programming mind, his leadership ability and his success in driving ratings. I am beyond excited to have him on the Mega team!” says Ferro.

Added Perez, “I'm honored to join the talented CBS RADIO team and have the opportunity to return to Houston with Mega. Programming the most listened-to Spanish-language station in town is exciting.”

Mega 101, Numero Uno En Exitos, is Houston’s premier Hispanic station. This exciting, energetic and vibrant station plays music from Enrique Iglesias, Don Omar, Pitbull and Mana.

CBS RADIO currently owns six radio stations in the Houston market, including 100.3 KILT-FM, HOT 95-7 KKHH-FM, MIX 96-5 KHMX-FM, Mega 101 FM KLOL, SportsRadio 610-AM and Talk 650 KIKK-AM, as well as the Texans Radio Network broadcast on 100.3 KILT and SportsRadio 610.

KIAH 39's NewsFix launches 'The Fixer' investigative and consumer unit

Every Houston TV station has an investigative unit at this point, but when NewsFix was announced on KIAH CW39, I never thought it would have an investigative unit. Looks like I've been fixed though, because the station just notified me of its latest investigative endeavor.

Launched just a few weeks ago, "The Fixer" is NewsFix's new weekly segment in consumer advocacy and investigative reporting.

"The Fixer" has already gone after city hall and gotten results according to the installment's first story (video embedded above). After Houston Mayor Annise Parker implemented water conservation measures recently, "The Fixer" found city vehicles were getting excessive scrub downs resulting in wasted water. According to the report, the city shut down the problem.

Next "The Fixer" went after Bush Intercontinental Airport where the station says it uncovered potential overcharging of travelers concerning baggage scales.

“NewsFix continues to produce new segments which are pertinent to our viewers,” said NewsFix Executive Producer and Imaginator Gary Jaffe. “Our great investigative team has over 25 years of combined experience in the Houston television market, and putting “The Fixer” into action to will help raise awareness of issues that affect what’s happening around the city. You’ll never know the actual identity of “The Fixer,” although you’ll see his shadow, and always see his results.”

I don't know for a fact who is working in "The Fixer" unit since it is top secret at this point. But after helping get former KTRK 13 Undercover (Wayne Dolcefino) photographer David DeFranchi hired at KIAH 39, I have to imagine he is involved. It would be crime if he wasn't.

AT&T launches Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth network microsites

I know there are a lot of Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth readers who have AT&T as a mobile carrier. Heck, even my wife has an iPhone now.

So I thought you might be interested in some news AT&T sent me about microsites it just launched in Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth that offer news on recent network enhancements. Basically there is a map of the metro areas that show new cell sites, broadband speed upgrades, capacity upgrades and network connection upgrades since the beginning of 2011.

For example, the company says in Houston it has:
- Built eight new cell sites, providing more bars in the area.
- Upgraded 20 cell sites, providing faster mobile broadband speeds.
- Added 256 carriers to increase spectrum on area cell sites, providing extra capacity to reduce dropped calls and improve service quality at busy times.
- Expanded 325 network connections with fiber lines at area cell sites, helping reduce dropped calls and enable 4G data speeds for compatible devices.

There is also a map that shows AT&T Wi-Fi Hotspots.

Yes, I know some will probably still complain about the company in my comments section - I'm just letting you know. You can also complain to @ATT_Houston now.

KPRC 2 anchor Courtney Zavala is back

Last week's post of KHOU 11's Chita Johnson with Texans cheerleaders photos got a big reaction. So this week, I'm giving you one better! Raw video of Chita practicing with the Texans cheerleaders (embedded above). Who knows, maybe she will make the squad.

New KPRC 2 weekend anchor Irika Sargent has big debut

UPDATE FEBRUARY 13, 2014
Irika Sargent to leave KPRC for WFOR Miami

New KPRC 2 weekend anchor Irika Sargent is already causing a splash in these current calm Houston TV news waters. I admit I did not catch Sargent's debut this weekend, but clearly some of those who did were interested enough to find out more information about her on my blog.

I mention this as a note of interest because many times I blog about a reporter/anchor type coming to town, they hit the airwaves and I don't see a blip in traffic concerning them. So basically, some KPRC 2 viewers are showing respect for the new Sargent of Houston TV news.

It was already covered in my last post how Sargent practiced law in New York City at the international law firm of Greenberg Traurig LLP, but according to her recently posted bio on click2houston.com, we now know Sargent
loves martial arts and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

So she has a law degree and a black belt in Tae Kwon Do? Heck, it's getting to the point that I'm getting too intimidated to post about Sargent anymore! Welcome to the Bayou City Irika, please don't get mad at me.

You can catch Irika Sargent and Joel Eisenbaum weekend evenings on KPRC 2.

Where is Fox 26 KRIV's Tom Zizka?

Tom Zizka has been a trooper trouper for Fox 26 KRIV. He came to the Fox owned Houston station in 1998 as a consumer/investigative reporter, then became a morning anchor and lately a fill-in main anchor.

A FOX rep told me Zizka is coming full circle and returning to a similar role to his first. Starting this week, he will cover consumer and business news for Fox 26's 5 and 9pm newscasts.

Zizka has been a familiar face on Fox 26 Morning News for many years as one of the many anchors on the now six hour long show. Most recently we saw Zizka serve as a fill-in main anchor after Mike Barajas left the station.

Now that former NBC/CBS network correspondent Don Teague has officially filled Barajas' empty chair, Zizka will return to his original role. As a former KTRK 13 consumer producer, I say the more consumer news in Houston, the better.

Zizka will be joining current Fox 26 consumer reporter Emily Akin and her "Take It To Akin" segments. Think two consumer reporters is a lot? Another Houston station that also has two consumer reporters is KTRK 13 with Jeff Ehling and Patricia Lopez.

Houston teen says he will be the youngest film/tv producer of all time

Houston mega film/TV director/producer in the making Kevin Smith (yes another future one) is tenacious. He has to be. At age 14, this teen has some big goals to reach and a tall mountain to climb to get there.

Of course at that age, there are obstacles...like me. I get a press release from him saying how he owns a production company that is producing a teen talk show called Klownz Talk, and oh get this, NBC is interested in it. Naturally I brush him off and say when you get this NBC deal, let me know.

Does Smith give up? No. He points out to me that KTRK 13's Adela Uchida has already done a story on him (watch above). Since I trust Uchida's judgment, I say, "why not?" and give him a post.

Just watch, he will make it big one day and then brush me off. Hey Kevin, remember me when you are big time!

Mike McGuff: What makes you interested in doing your TV/film projects?

Kevin Smith: The thing that interests me the most in Film/TV projects are the people around me, mostly my business partners, they give me then tools and guidance to succeed!

MM: Does your age get you more respect or less respect in the industry?

KS: Being 14 in this industry is one of the hardest things to manage. First some adults do take me seriously as I would like but it's something I see that I will have to most likely have to deal with.

MM: What do the other kids at school think?

KS: Even more kids my age say that I'm not going to be successful, but look at me now! And then we have kids my age that are all gain for what I'm doing with my life!

MM: What do you see yourself doing at age 30?

KS: At the age 30, I see myself with a larger company than what I have now and also would have produced more projects under my name!

MM: What is your ultimate goal?

KS: My ultimate goal is to by the next few months to years is to get a Grammy award or any awards that will describe myself as the Youngest Film/TV Producer of all times!

VIDEO: Fox 26 KRIV anchor Don Teague's debut

Monday night, new Fox 26 KRIV anchor Don Teague made his big debut. REVIEW: I'm Feeling Lucky: The Confessions of Google Employee Number 59 by Douglas Edwards

I told you how I was reading I'm Feeling Lucky: The Confessions of Google Employee Number 59 by Douglas Edwards. Well I finished.

Now, I've read books about Google before years ago. While I learned something about the company, at the same time I wanted to gag because the kiss up factor was up to a googol if you know what I mean.

Edwards' book however gives us a more realistic view of the company I have a feeling. After all, he was there in the early years, watched it grow and then was let go. That gives him credibility in my book. I think we are looking at a more accurate picture in this one (I have not read Steven Levy's In The Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives so it could be more honest too for all I know).

In I'm Feeling Lucky: The Confessions of Google Employee Number 59 Edwards shows us how fast the company grew, details on the product launch of Gmail and Google news, internal struggles (his was with Marissa Mayer) as well as more details about all of the perks employees get. Plus, Edwards somehow wrote a book about a company from a marketing perspective and gave it the intensity of a thriller. I'm serious, I was on the edge of my seat during his accounts of Google product launches.

Here are some things off the top of my head that I learned about the search engine giant from the book:
- The founders hate marketing
- The founders ran the place on the cheap (that's how it survived the crash)
- Code names of Google products
- Where the mantra "Don't be evil" really came from

I had to laugh at the 50 cent words Edwards through in. I know that Google is known as an intelligent company, so I guess he was trying to keep that sensibility going.

In full disclosure, a rep for the publisher sent me a copy of this book to review.

James Franco kills 950 KPRC's Michael Garfield on ABC's General Hospital

Breaking news... Didn't screw my scene with #JamesFranco... on TwitpicNever thought I would get an opportunity to write that headline but it is true - 950 KPRC's Michael Garfield aka "The High Tech Texan" will be killed off by Academy Award nominee James Franco on ABC's General Hospital. Well. I should say Franco's character kills Garf's character. Look for the excitement in three upcoming episodes starting near the end of September.

Garf flew out to Los Angeles last weekend to tape the special episodes. Normally the show does not tape on weekends, but a special exception was made for Garfield Franco. Seems the former Oscar host is shooting a movie in Detroit right now - I'm referring to Franco, not Garf this time. According to IMDB, that movie is Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Shot of the day for #GH fans. @1SteveBurton, #JamesFranco, @... on TwitpicAccording to the Huffington Post, Frano first appeared on the soap back in 2009 as a serial killer, named Robert "Franco" Frank. Clearly ABC wants you to know who is playing the role in case you don't recognize him. And why not? I'm no soap enthusiast, but I don't think actors of Franco's caliber go on soaps for the thrill of it usually.

This is a big deal for Garf obviously. Not many Houston radio talents go on soap operas to be killed off by an Oscar nominee and show host. Even more special for the Garf clan, his wife has been watching the show for nearly 30 years. She likes the soap so much, that for his marriage proposal to her, Garf videotaped himself on one knee with a ring and edited into an episode of GH they were watching. That sounds like above and beyond.

As for Franco, you might be calling him doc soon. That's because he has been accepted for the doctoral program in literature and creative writing at the University of Houston.

Lance Zierlein joins SportsTalk 790 KBME

As I am writing this, former 1560 The Game KGOW's Lance Zierlein is on SportsTalk 790 KBME talking about joining that station. His first day will be next week on August 24th.

Zierlein will be on the Houston Clear Channel station from 7am to 11am.
Matt Jackson and Adam Wexler will still remain on the air from 6am to 10am.
Zierlein will just join them at 7am. He will then solo from 10am to 11am.
Dylan Guin will be on the air from 11am to noon. Matt Thomas will come on at 12pm.

As I just recently posted, Zierlein announced last week he was leaving 1560 The Game KGOW. Sources started telling me then he was going to SportsTalk 790 KBME.

Zierlein said on his appearance with Jackson and Wexler that his move wasn't about the money, it was about a good fit. He also admitted he did not like getting up early and that is why he is coming on at 7am.

(Thanks to all that tipped me off on this)

Fox 26 KRIV promotes mikemcguff.com on prime time TV

Fox 26 KRIV is my new favorite Houston TV station. Why? They promote the heck out of my blog for free...even in prime time during FOX programming!

Essentially I've become the Roger Ebert of Fox 26. I post something about the television station on my blog, then the station takes a quote from that post and uses it in a promo. Just like how a movie studio uses a film critic's quotes on movie posters.

You never knew that this little free blogger.com account blog really was the arbiter of taste and culture for Houston did you? Me neither. But I like it. In fact I am planning on sending the KRIV creative services director a cookie bouquet.

The latest mikemcguff.com Fox 26 promo is one touting new Fox 26 anchor Don Teague:

The promo was taken from this post. I decided not to name the candidates because if I was applying for a job, I wouldn't want it all over a blog when I didn't get it. Although if I had named names, maybe KRIV would have put up a billboard on 59 and 610 with a quote from me on it!

The previous Mike McGuff Fox 26 promo ran after last November's elections. That meant I got exposure for the blog on both Fox 26 and 39 KIAH since I was a freelance reporter there at the time. I found the timing amusing.

If I play my cards right, Fox 26 might hire me as a station spokesperson. Think back to the classic Ernest P. Worrell (RIP Jim Varney) KPRC 2 campaign from the 1980s.

(Thanks Molly!)

107.5 The Eagle KGLK's ratings jump after taking over 106.9 The Zone

Monday night I tweeted the latest Houston radio ratings for the July period and I noticed one thing stuck out. Classic rocker 107.5 The Eagle KGLK jumped up in the ratings. The first thing thought was the simulcasting of the station on both the 107.5 and 106.9 frequencies. Last June, The Eagle took over 106.9 The Zone KHPT (formerly The Point).

Looks like I'm not the only one who thought that.

"We believe the increase in ratings is a direct result of the simulcast of the Eagle brand on 106.9 and 107.5," Mark Krieschen, Vice President/Market Manager Cox Media Group - Houston, told mikemcguff.com. "The two frequencies provide the largest coverage of any single radio station in southeast Texas. The response from listeners in the northern part of the city has been impressive."

As I wrote in June, the theory is, now Cox can take the Lake Jackson frequency 107.5 and combine it with the Conroe frequency 106.9 to make The Eagle have a larger, more reliable coverage area. Obviously that plan had some merit. Now The Eagle can be heard clearly in the north and south of the Houston radio market.

On the other side, you may look at the past few months' ratings before The Zone was zapped by The Eagle and notice that if you add the two stations' numbers together, you get about the same rating as the July one. My question is...is it better to have one station on two frequencies get a higher rating or two separate stations getting lower ratings.

I don't know the economics behind that question. If I did, I'd be in broadcast sales making a lot of money and driving a luxury car. My radio mentor Frank Fallon always told me if you can fix it or sell it, you have a job in broadcasting. Those words make a ton of sense to me.

The combination of the frequencies also puts KGLK ahead of 93.7 The Arrow KKRW - the other (and longtime) classic rock station in Houston.

In other news, Classical 91.7 KUHA (former Rice Radio KTRU) came out of hash marks in July to get a rating (under 1).

PICS: KHOU 11's Chita Johnson with Texans cheerleaders

Sunday night, before Monday's total financial meltdown, I posted a photo of KPRC 2's Jennifer Reyna with some Houston Texans cheerleaders. It was to cheer you up before you lost much of your 401K and other investments. It's the least I could do.

So today, after the accounts have been largely wiped out, I offer you an entire web gallery of new KHOU 11 meteorologist Chita Johnson with the Houston Texans cheerleaders. It's becoming very apparent there are two camps forming in Houston. The lines are being drawn. Judging by comments on this blog and in other message boards, some Houston TV news viewers are going to one side of the line for Reyna and the other for Chita. Which side are you on?

Like I said before, KHOU knows it has a powerful weapon with Chita. Now it is capitalizing by sending her to cheerleader practice. Smart move. And think of all those guys people clicking on these photos online. Maybe whomever hired Chita should replace Timothy Geithner and crew!

And while you're here anyway, I noticed during Monday's Len at Work: A day in the life of a big rig trucker, Cannon was filmed wearing some fancy designer sunglasses. Click on the title to find out which designer protects this KHOU anchor's eyes!

Bug in mouth strikes former KPRC 2 staffer on live TV

UPDATED WITH QUOTE FROM WES HOHENSTEIN

Former KPRC 2 meteorologist Wes Hohenstein just made The Drudge Report and the UK's The Daily Mail. And it's for something that has happened to another Houston TV person too.

We all know that Fox 26 KRIV reporter Isiah Carey AKA The Insite is known as the bug in mouth reporter. Heck, he was just celebrated on Comedy Central's Tosh.O for it. But now Hohenstein, who left Houston in 2006, got a moth in his mouth while trying to deliver a weather report at his station NBC17 WNCN-TV Raleigh, North Carolina.

We know from watching Hohenstein on Houston TV that he is a consummate professional. So how did he handle it? He says he thought about swatting it away, but then decided that wouldn't be appropriate for television. So he just swallowed the moth and kept going. Even declined water, but eventually did give in when someone handed him some.

"What happened to me, could happen to anyone," Hohenstein told mikemcguff.com. "Being a victim of RMS (Random Moth Swallowings) is a serious thing, that's why I'm encouraging everyone to only talk with your mouth closed!"

The anchor joked with Wes that the good news was this will never get on YouTube. Wes just responded dryly, "You-what?" Well look on the bright side, at least it's probably extra protein for Wes and a whole lot of publicity.

You can follow Wes on Twitter at WeatherWes or 'like' his Facebook page at NBC17 Weather Wes Hohenstein.

Telemundo 47 KTMD to launch morning news; weekend newscasts with KXTX Dallas

This past Spring, KXLN Univision 45 started a morning newscast making it the first local Spanish AM news in Houston. Now here comes NBC's Telemundo KTMD 47 with a response. Just announced today, Telemundo is ramping up its local programming in Houston and Dallas:
As part of its ongoing commitment to strengthen the local profile of its owned stations and better serve the Hispanic communities in which they operate, the Telemundo Station Group today announced that it will increase local news and public affairs programming at the stations by more than 25% in an expansion initiative to be completed by January, 2012. The initiative will involve the launch of morning news programs in Los Angeles and Houston; local weekend news programs in New York, Dallas, and Puerto Rico; weekday news programs in Denver; and local public affairs programs in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix and Puerto Rico. These programs, all of which will be launched by the end of January 2012, will contribute more than 1,000 hours of additional news and public affairs offerings at the stations.
So what will we see in Houston? According to the release, by January, 2012, KTMD will launch a local version of “Buenos Dias Houston” featuring a format modeled on “Buenos Dias Los Angeles,” including local, national and world news, weather and traffic reports and special segments tailored to the unique interests of Houston’s Latino community.

Also by January, new half hour local editions of weekend news will launch in Dallas (KXTX) and Houston (KTMD). These weekend news programs will air at 6pm and 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays and will offer local news, weather and sports.

Clearly Spanish language local news is a hot property - especially in Houston. In June, I blogged how well KXLN did in the May ratings book.

"Houston is a key Hispanic market no question, and it makes sense to have a Spanish local morning show," Ray Fohr with public relations and marketing agency Fleishman Hillard in Houston told mikemikemcguff.com back in March.

You read here just last week that Houston's 55 KTBU switched formats to Spanish language network Mega TV.
