Haley Hernandez and Sophia Beausoleil have babies same day!

KPRC 2 reporters Sophia Beausoleil and Haley Hernandez deliver baby boys on the same day!

Thanks to the channel 2 baby boom of 2019, we know that KPRC 2 anchor/reporters get pregnant around the same time. Now we know they also deliver around the same time too - in two instances, the same day!

KPRC 2 reporters Haley Hernandez and Sophia Beausoleil both had baby boys on Thursday, September 26, 2019!

Am I the only one thinking joint birthday parties one day?

"We are thrilled our son, Travis, made it into the world last week on 9/26/19," posted Hernandez. "So far all he does is get kisses, sleep, watch the Texans and light up our life. While he does that, I’ll be off the TV for a little bit learning to be his mom. Wish me luck!"

"All praises to God! Welcome to the world our sweet baby boy, Zayn," posted Beausoleil. "Thursday 9/26/19 8.0lbs 3.5 oz 21.75. @yelqutub and I are beyond thrilled to take care of this gift and are doing well. This kid is honestly soo cool, chill and lovely!"

Five Candidates Face Off in Simulcast Stream presented in English and Spanish

Univision 45/KXLN-TV and ABC13/KTRK-TV have joined to co-host the Houston Mayoral Debate, streaming it live from Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall, 800 Bagby St. at 7p.m. on Wednesday, October 2nd.

The Mayoral Debate will feature five candidates and will be accessible exclusively online at www.abc13.com and www.univision45.com. Simultaneous Spanish-language translation will be available on Univision 45’s website.

ABC13’s Chauncy Glover and Univision 45’s Claudia Ramos will moderate the debate. The audience will be by invitation only. ABC13 will televise the debate the same night at 10:35 p.m.

“We are thrilled about the opportunity to give Houstonians a chance to hear from these mayoral candidates,” said Wendy Granato, President and General Manager of KTRK ABC13. “Partnering with Univision is a win-win for our diverse audiences, who will be able to watch the debate on the platform of their choice.”

“We are excited to give our audience access to Houston's major mayoral candidates, allowing them to hear directly from the candidates about the policies that will have a crucial impact on their lives and communities”, said Martha Kattan, VP of Content, Univision Houston. “Together with ABC13, we will be empowering Latinos in Houston to be more informed and empowered before they cast their ballot in November.”

The Storyhive opens large video production studio

Former Houston media members grow video production studio business into new location

Here's the story of Houston media types that successfully struck out on their own and are growing.

The Storyhive was founded by Houston filmmakers Alex Luster (formerly FOX 26 KRIV and abc13 KTRK), Tom Gandy (formerly abc13 KTRK) and Jena Moreno (formerly of the Houston Chronicle).

After five years of producing videos for clients ranging from energy companies to financial firms, The Storyhive is moving into its new, larger facility in Houston's East End with an eye of attracting others to the location.

"We will shoot The Storyhive's corporate videos in our new facility," Moreno told mikemcguff.com. "We also hope to become one of the premiere Houston video production studios with other production companies renting our space."

The firm tells me its new space at 4010 Canal Street is approximately 15,000-square-feet and will house a more than 2,400-square-foot studio -- one of the largest purpose-built media production studios inside of Houston’s 610 Loop.

"The 2,400-square-foot studio will include a roll-up door so that big equipment and vehicles can be driven in for shoots," Gandy said. "The undeveloped portion of the building will be built into a larger, second studio if demand is there."

The studio will be equipped with a professionally installed lighting grid, a green room, conference room, dedicated editing suite, kitchen studio and warehouse space.

"This location helps us stay close to downtown, where many of our clients are based," Luster said. "It's also close to the sports stadiums, universities and Texas Medical Center. It has easy access to major freeways. Finally, Tom, Jena and I live in Eastwood just a mile away from the building, making our commute short!"

Can't argue with the last one!

On October 19th and 20th, The Storyhive owners will give guided tours of this ‘work-in-progress’ structure during the Eastwood Civic Association’s Annual Historic Home Tour.

Melanie Lawson's car broken into, a look at car break-ins in Houston

From the highs to the lows, last week we celebrated anchor Melanie Lawson's anniversary with abc13 KTRK and today, we learn her car was broken into near the Museum District.

"FRUSTRATED AND ANGRY," posted Lawson to Facebook. "That’s how you feel when someone breaks into your car. Windows smashed and your valuables taken – You feel so violated. It happened to me two nights ago and I’m not the only one."

Reporter Marla Carter did an expanded look into this crime with the five new hot spots for car break-ins in Houston.

Lawson told Carter that she was eating at a nice restaurant and even parked in a well-lit garage. She came back and her back window as smashed out with others cracked. Three windows had to be replaced.

The thieves got her bag which had an iPad and documents in it. They even took her lunch kit.

GM David Loving exits KXLN Univision 45

David Loving and KXLN Vice President of News and News Regional Director, Martha Kattan

For nearly a decade, David Loving served as President and General Manager of Univision 45 Houston KXLN but now multiple sources tell mikemcguff.com he is no longer with the station.

In his time at Univision, KLXN became the weather hub for the company's stations around the country. He also was instrumental in the development of the Uforia Lounge located inside the Univision studios. Loving personally gave me a tour of both spaces in 2017 and they were impressive.

Most importantly, he oversaw Univision during the time I first featured in 2016 when The rise of Houston Spanish-language TV came to the forefront in television ratings.

"Univision Houston is a leader in TV and radio nationally, regardless of language, and we deliver the best news coverage, radio shows and everything in between to the community that we’re proud to serve," Loving told mikemcguff.com back then. "We attract top talent by staying true to our mission of informing and empowering Hispanic America and to our goal of delivering best-in-class content day in and day out."

After graduating from Texas A&M, Loving started in 1994 with Univision San Antonio as an account executive for KXTN/KROM/KCOR radio and moved his way up through the company.

In 1998, he switched to television and became national sales manager for KWEX San Antonio.

From there, he moved to Austin in 2002 to become general sales manager for KAKW and KBVO. He was promoted to vice president and general manager for the stations in 2004.

In 2006, Loving moved back to San Antonio to head KWEX and KNIC.

In 2009, he moved west to become SVP and Regional Director of Northern California where he supervised the Univision/Unimas operations in San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield, and Salt Lake City.

After a year, he moved to Houston to head KXLN where he has been ever since.

I reached out to Loving, but did not hear back.

Mike Glenn leaves Houston Chronicle for Washington Times

Mike Glenn and Mike McGuff

We are losing a Houston Chronicle reporter who was fully embraced by many TV news journos.

After covering the streets of Houston, and lately Katy, Mike Glenn bids the Bayou City an adieu as he moves to Washington, DC to cover the military for the Washington Times.

“My formative years were spent in the military - first as a Navy brat and later as a Soldier in the Army in both peace and war," Glenn told mikemcguff.com. The chance to cover the military in Washington is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

Glenn enlisted in the Army upon his graduation from high school in Rockwall, TX.

According to his bio, Glenn spent about six years in the Army, both as an enlisted soldier and officer. During the Gulf War, he led a platoon of cavalry troopers in combat.

After his honorable discharge, Glenn attended UT Arlington receiving a BA in history and a commission as a lieutenant in the Army. The news biz came calling and Glenn attended grad school in journalism.

Glenn started as a reporter at the El Paso Times, moved on to be the Gannett San Antonio Bureau Chief covering the Air Force and them arrived at the Houston Chronicle in 2000.

"I moved here as a former Dallas resident and had the usual cliched opinions about Houston - it was a filthy, crime ridden sewer," Glenn told me. "After spending almost two decades here, I leave knowing it’s one of the most interesting and vital cities in the nation."

While at the Chronicle, Glenn regularly made my blog when he hit the stop of the social media charts.

Glenn was the first reporter I remember publicly writing about experiencing post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) while working as a journalist.

Xavier Walton starting on KHOU Monday with a possible surprise

New KHOU 11 #HTownRush morning anchor Xavier Walton says he is starting this Monday, but may make a surprise appearance ahead of time

When I was looking around for information concerning Lisa Hernandez being absent from KHOU 11's airwaves, I stumbled on some info about her successor on the morning newscast #HTownRush.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2022
Xavier Walton joins NewsNation

In early August, KHOU told me Xavier Walton was joining the TEGNA station as morning anchor from sister-station WCNC Charlotte, North Carolina.

Well Walton is in the channel 11 building now, learning their systems and shooting promos, according to his Facebook page...he even tried Whataburger.

Unfortunately Imelda will prepare him for life as a journalist in Houston.

Walton commented that he's starting on the morning show next Monday, but may make a "surprise appearance on the show Friday."

"We are excited to have him on board," KHOU president and general manager, Robert Springer, told mikemcguff.com in early August.

Springer added that Walton wants to move to Houston, not only to anchor, but to make the city a better place to live through his community involvement.

KBMT Beaumont broadcasting from KHOU due to flooding

KBMT Beaumont has evacuated its studios due to Imelda's flooding and is now broadcasting from a station that understands the need all too well.

The 12 News staff has re-located to Houston at the new studios of TEGNA sister station KHOU 11.

KBMT reports all of its employees are safe.

"KHOU11 is simulcasting for our sister station in Beaumont as its crews evacuate," tweeted channel 11 anhcor Brandi Smith. "It's a situation we are all too familiar with here. Our hearts are with our colleagues in Beaumont, as well as the residents there who are impacted by severe floodings."

Britta Merwin has her baby during a tropical disturbance!

The universe has a funny sense of humor when KPRC 2 morning meteorologist Britta Merwin has her baby during a tropical storm/depression Imelda hitting Houston.

As I am writing this post, it's already starting to pick up here again! In fact, I am trying to post this quickly before we take a power hit. Lots of lighting and thunder right now.

"It's a GIRL!!! Of course I would have a baby during a tropical storm," wrote Merwin on Instagram. "We are thrilled to announce the birth of our 3rd child Lila Rose!"

Merwin let us know back in April that this makes baby three for her family and the first girl.

And since we have a baby boom over at KPRC, in case you missed it, morning anchor Owen Conflenti's baby was born this week too!

Basically my blog has become the KPRC 2019 baby boom blog I guess.

If my calculations are correct, any day you might see a post about reporter Sophia Beausoleil having her baby.

Where is Lisa Hernandez?

UPDATE OCTOBER 30, 2019
Lisa Hernandez has her baby!

Her social media accounts went cold in late August and apparently she hasn't been on KHOU 11 in weeks, so where is anchor Lisa Hernandez?

Monday, I started getting lots of questions from readers about the whereabouts of Hernandez. It was just all of a sudden. Channel 11 viewers collectively wondered where the longtime anchor disappeared to.

I also found out FTVLive posted about Hernandez so maybe more Houston TV viewers read the TV trades then I thought. They also might wonder why Scott Jones wears sunglasses.

One viewer told me Hernandez has been gone three weeks, another says four weeks.

Back in May of 2019, Hernandez announced she is pregnant with her second daughter. She said the baby is due in November.

Hernandez, and husband ESPN 97.5FM host Joel Blank, welcomed their first daughter to the world in 2015.

The station also announced in early August that Hernandez would be moving to weekends, but she has not appeared on those newscasts either.

I reached out to Hernandez, but did not hear back.

Owen Conflenti adds a boy to the family

The good news is that KPRC 2 morning anchor Owen Conflenti's wife, Odilia, had the baby, bad news is that today Tropical Storm Imelda formed in the Gulf of Mexico. I'll hand that last part over to the TV weather departments.

"Big congrats to KPRC2 Owen Conflenti and his family," posted KPRC medical reporter Haley Hernandez. "It's a BOY named Owen."

abc13 anchors celebrating some big anniversaries

Happy 37 to abc13 KTRK anchors Tom Koch and Melanie Lawson who arrived on the same day at channel 13 back in 1982.

"ABC13-Melanie Lawson and I are celebrating another anniversary at #KTRKTV," Koch posted. "She’s been one of my best friends throughout all these years even though I have seniority on her because they called me in two hours early on our first day!"

"Actually, Tom always claims seniority because he was called into work two hours early – give me a break," Lawson joked. 😀😀 "But the truth is he has always been one of the kindest, most compassionate, and funniest guys I know. Love you, Tom!"

Also celebrating an anniversary is anchor Gina Gaston.

She's celebrating her 25th year of covering Houston.

Gaston started at KTRK in 1992 as a morning anchor with Tom Koch and later anchored at MSNBC New York in 1999.

She returned to channel 13 a few years later where she has been ever since.

KPRC 2 celebrates diversity during Hispanic Heritage Month

KPRC 2 is celebrating the diversity of both the Houston population and its employee community during Hispanic Heritage Month, starting September 15 through October 15, 2019.

As part of its on-air and digital campaign, KPRC 2 will spotlight some of Houston's most prolific Hispanic artists and muralists, including Gonzo247, Donkeeboy and Donkeemom, as well as the artist behind the city's iconic BESOMEONE mural. The campaign will also celebrate the diversity of our own KPRC family, both on-air and behind the scenes, hailing from Peru, Chile, Mexico and beyond.

Throughout the month, KPRC 2 News will share stories of Houston's Hispanic culture, honoring how so much of what makes our city great has been created by the Latino community.

"Hispanic Heritage Month is a perfect time to celebrate the people and culture that form one of the many facets that make this city shine," said KPRC 2 Vice President/General Manager Jerry Martin.

New profiles will be posted weekly along with stories every weekday on click2houston.com/hispanicheritagemonth.

"So many people, one voice, one Houston."

'Country Covers' features Houston-area musicians to coincide with latest Ken Burns series

Houston Public Media TV8 KUHT debuts Country Covers ahead of Ken Burns' Country Music series

I had a chance to sit behind documentary filmmaker Ken Burns at a Houston preview of his Vietnam series a few years ago and I must admit that I was hoping to absorb some vibes from him. Let's face it, no one will ever want to name a Final Cut Pro effect after me!

So you know I'm excited about Burns' upcoming docu-series Country Music which debuts this Sunday at 7pm on TV8 KUHT.

Houston Public Media is excited about Burns' latest offering too. So much so, that HPM Arts and Culture Producer Troy Schulze worked on a project to coincide with the upcoming doc called Country Covers.

Country Covers is a spin-off of HPM's digital music series Skyline Sessions. The show features a variety of musicians performing their favorite country classics while sharing personal stories of their love for country music.

"For me, it was really interesting to see the songs people would choose," Schulze told mikemcguff.com. "They really run the whole country music timeline, from early country artists like Jimmie Rodgers, to ‘60s and ‘70s icons like George Jones and Loretta Lynn, to more contemporary country-pop like Garth Brooks and Miley Cyrus."

Country Covers features Houston-area musicians like The Suffers, Christina Wells and Robert Ellis, as well as Nashville-based artists Erin Rae and Stasney Mav.

“My country music relationship started at birth," said The Suffers lead singer Kam Franklin. "I feel like you can’t really call yourself a Texan if you’re not deeply immersed in it."

The half-hour Country Covers special airs 3:30pm Sunday, September 15 on TV 8 KUHT. The Ken Burns' Country Music series premieres later the same day at 7pm on channel 8.

North Shore Mustangs featured on KHOU 11 special

KHOU 11 sports reporter/anchor Daniel Gotera is back with another addition of "The Program," this time following the North Shore Mustangs football team - you can watch the whole show above!

"This is a show that we're really proud of here at KHOU," Gotera told mikemcguff.com. "We're always looking to take our sports coverage to the next level, beyond the traditional content that many have been accustomed to seeing. I think this special presentation does that and more."

In the past, Gotera and team have brought us a look at the football programs of Pearland and Santa Fe.

For 2019, the "Hard Knocks" style show features North Shore who are the defending 6A, Division 1 state champions.

"We're really excited to showcase a team and program like North Shore," Gotera added. "The tradition, the passion, the stories...that school has them all and I think the show really captures how these young men deal with the spotlight after winning a state championship and the maturity in which they handle the ups and downs of an early season disappointment."

WFAA 8 DFW morning anchor Kara Sewell and reporter Hannah Davis have an interesting video podcast called Off Air where they go beyond the headlines and focus on various topics.

Television news isn’t glamorous, if you’re getting into the biz just to be on TV you’ll be disappointed and your career will likely be short. Hannah and Kara have a combined 20 years of experience in TV news, they’re answering the most asked questions about being an on camera journalist; the myths, the realities and their biggest on air blunders.

Texas Public Radio Stations and NPR Launch Collaborative Statewide Newsroom

Public radio stations across Texas are teaming with NPR to increase coverage of statewide issues and boost reporting from underserved regions, including the border with Mexico. Reporters and editors from the state’s four largest public radio stations — Houston Public Media, KERA in Dallas, KUT in Austin, and Texas Public Radio in San Antonio— will plan statewide coverage together, share resources, and dig deeper into the most important stories in Texas.

“Without access to information in local communities, at the state level, at the national and international level, nothing short of our nation’s democracy is at stake,” said Nancy Barnes, senior vice president of news and editorial director for NPR. “The Texas Newsroom is the first step in our collaborative journalism project that, when fully developed, will make public radio the strongest reporting network in the country.”

This innovative collaboration begins with six live, statewide newscasts each weekday that draw content from public radio stations large and small across the state. So far, a dozen Texas NPR member stations are carrying these newscasts, with others likely to join. As a result, public radio audiences in Texas get both local coverage from their local stations, as well as a broader, state-level view of the news.

“The ultimate goal is to have one unified structure that ties together Texas public media stations and NPR – with an eye toward more robust, coordinated local coverage,” said Lisa Trapani Shumate, general manager of Houston Public Media. “The horizontal collaboration may be the more powerful result, further connecting related stories in different parts of the vast state and filling gaps in community news coverage.”

In addition to producing live statewide newscasts, the Texas stations are sharing in-depth reporting that appears on Texas Standard, a daily newsmagazine produced by KUT in Austin in collaboration with NPR member stations across the state. This includes local stories of interest to a broader audience and statewide perspectives on issues that affect communities from El Paso to Corpus Christi. To lead this collaboration, The Texas Newsroom is hiring a managing editor and two senior editors. It has also hired two newscasters and a newscast editor to produce the statewide newscasts. They join a team of more than two dozen reporters at the partner stations, including two who are based along the Texas/Mexico border.

NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have made significant investments in the initiative, which will help reshape the way public media stations engage their audiences. Both national entities have identified this collaboration as a prototype for the way stations throughout the country can share resources and produce more of the journalism their communities need.

NPR’s Collaborative Journalism Network will build on existing and new regional reporting collaborations across the country. The stations that now make up The Texas Newsroom came together four years ago after the launch of Texas Standard to form the Texas Station Collaborative, an innovative, industry-leading partnership.

The Texas Newsroom in Action

The advantages of this multi-station and network collaboration are already evident, especially in breaking news situations like the recent mass shootings in El Paso and in Midland/Odessa.

As soon as the El Paso shootings were reported, the newly-appointed Texas Newsroom senior editor based in Dallas dispatched reporters to El Paso, while a reporter in San Antonio went on the air with the first newscast spots for NPR’s national audience. Houston Public Media’s Politics and Government Reporter Andrew Schneider went to El Paso, Texas, to cover President Trump’s visit to Texas, as well as the reaction from the community in the wake of the tragedy. This seamless, multi-layered coverage was the result of relationships built through statewide collaboration and would not have been possible before the partnership was established.

This new regional collaboration in Texas is an important step. By working more closely together across the state, we will hear from new, more diverse voices, we will provide deeper news coverage, and we will strengthen local journalism.

Lainie Fritz appears on WDSU New Orleans

Former KPRC 2 sports reporter Lainie Fritz showed up on WDSU New Orleans as the Hearst station's "Texans Insider" during its Houston Texans vs New Orleans Saints coverage in Nola Monday night.

Fritz worked along side WDSU Sports Anchor/Reporter Fletcher Mackel, sports reporter Carley McCord and sports reporter/anchor Sharief Ishaq.

This could have been a family reunion for Fritz, as her dad Willie Fritz, is the Tulane University head football coach.

Fritz left channel 2 in mid-August after reporting on sports there for the last three years.

Now I know you don't come here for sports scores, but the Saints topped the Texans 30 to 28.

UPDATE APRIL 29, 2021
Rehan Aslam named WABC NY news director

Word is breaking on social media that abc13 KTRK assistant news director Rehan Aslam has been named the Walt Disney Television's new news director.

Aslam has been upped to the top news job after former news director, Wendy Granato, was promoted to the KTRK president and general manager position in early August.

Longtime GM Henry Florsheim retired from the news business after 22 years with channel 13 in July.

Aslam came to KTRK back in 2014 to be Granato's assistant news director.

He came from WFLD Chicago where he served as an executive producer for the FOX Television Station's 9pm newscast. According to his LinkedIn profile, Aslam started as a producer for WFLD in 2007. He worked in that role until 2010. From there he was named executive producer for “Good Day Chicago” in 2010.

He attended the University of Pittsburgh.

UPDATE

Here is the press release KTRK sent me after the original post:

September 6, 2019

KTRK-TV announced today Rehan Aslam has been named the station’s Vice President, News Director overseeing Broadcast and Digital content.

“When Rehan joined KTRK 5 years ago as Assistant News Director, I knew we had found the kind of leader who believes in total motivation and achieving excellence by lifting people up, not tearing them down.” said Wendy Granato, KTRK President &
General Manager. “ Rehan leads teams by listening, including, and settling for nothing less than our very best. Rehan also knows what it means to be a fighter. How to fight to stay on top. Fighting to find ways to do things better. Fighting to serve our diverse
audience and community. I am confident that Rehan’s plans for the future will help us solidify our place as Houston’s News Leader and I look forward to this great new era at ABC/13."

Rehan began his television news career in Cleveland, Ohio, working at both WJW Fox 8 and WEWS as a producer. Rehan was also Executive Producer at Fox 32/WFLD in Chicago before moving to Houston in 2014 to join KTRK as Assistant News Director.

“Houston is home and KTRK ABC13 is the city’s news leader. I am so honored for this new role and responsibility. I am very excited to work alongside my colleagues in one of the country’s top newsrooms. We will continue seeking and creating innovative ways to serve Houston’s diverse communities with content on all of our platforms. We have a responsibility to provide stories that are relevant and meaningful, while also providing information that keeps our viewers safe. I am very excited for the direction we are going and what we collectively will come up with next.”

Rehan is a member of the Disney Owned Television Station’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He is a 2009 Peabody Award winner for his work on the Derrion Albert story in Chicago.

A native of Northwest Pennsylvania, Rehan and his wife Sadaf are the proud parents of 7 year old son, Rafae. In his spare time, Rehan loves golfing and spending time with his family and friends. Rehan is also a diehard Marvel movie fan and is counting down the days until the launch of Disney+.

Houston NPR News 88.7 KUHF 2019 schedule changes

On September 7th, 2019, Houston Public Media will be changing its program lineup for News 88.7 KUHF the NPR affiliate.

One big change will be Houston Matters and its new time in the morning. The long running local issues talk show, which has aired at noon since its 2013 debut, will be moving to 9am along with other changes the station says are "designed to drive the news conversation of Houston."

"These changes are the result of an intensive look at our performance over the last 2 years; feedback from you, our listeners; and efficiencies we have identified with fees associated with show purchases," said Houston Public Media Executive Director of Operations Josh Adams in an email. "The long-term effect of these updates will push us to reach larger audiences and engage more of our Greater Houston listeners. We are headed into a contentious election year and must be positioned to deliver trusted news content to our audience so they may make an informed decision on Election Day."
