104 KRBE's Mumbles reenacts Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball'; videobombs Fox 26

Mumbles of The Roula and Ryan Show on 104.1 KRBE strips to recreate a Miley Cyrus soon to be classic

Miley Cyrus made lots of waves when she stripped for her "Wrecking Ball" video, but a parody video from Houston might make even more eventually.

Mumbles, the assistant producer for The Roula and Ryan Show on 104.1 KRBE, remade the video (yes he is nude) for $30 in three days. The sledgehammer took most of the budget.

"Lots of people should be losing weight in Houston after watching this one," said The Roula and Ryan Show executive producer Eric Rowe. "They'll also lose their appetites."

So far, the video has more than 258,000 views. You can watch Cyrus' original video here for comparison sake.

When Mumbles isn't remaking pop diva videos or on the radio, he also videobombs TV news crews, especially when new iPhones come out. Here he is behind Fox 26 KRIV reporter Andrea Watkins!

PR pro offers advice for journalists entering public relations

PR authority shares secrets of the trade with mikemcguff.com part 2

Earlier this week, I interviewed Katherine McLane, Vice President of Communications and External Affairs for the LIVESTRONG Foundation to try to glean some PR secrets and best practices.

Today, it's Gene Grabowski's turn. Grabowski will deliver the luncheon keynote address, “Communicating with a Global Platform,” at the upcoming Houston PR Day Conference.

Mr. Grabowski has been named PR Week’s award as Crisis Manager of the Year for his work on numerous issues including the Kuwaiti detainees in Guantanamo, Roger Clemens’ Congressional perjury case, the series of North American pet food recalls, and the Chinese lead-paint toy recalls. He is also a former White House news reporter.

Mike McGuff: How was the transition from journalist to PR world? Any advice for those looking to make the switch?

Gene Grabowski: My transition from journalism to PR was relatively easy, primarily because I was immediately able to translate resourcefulness and writing ability into marketable services. It also helped that I liked people and I’m a talker by nature. The transition to PR is often hardest for those who have been journalists the longest, however. That’s because while journalistic instincts like curiosity, tenacity and skepticism are helpful in PR, the field now demands a higher degree of flexibility and the ability to sell at all levels – characteristics that dyed-in-the-wool reporters sometimes lack.

My advice for those seeking to make the change is as follows:
- Develop good presentation skills to support your writing ability. Otherwise, you may not get the exposure to clients that is essential for moving up in the field.
- Be flexible and open to learning new skills. Just because you can write and report doesn't mean you have the necessary skills for PR today. For example, you will want to learn as quickly as possible how to manage clients, manage teams, sell new business, strategize on digital media issues and make presentations.

In your opinion, what is the secret to good public relations/communications?

The secret is to understand that there is no secret. Everyone has different talents and skills that must be applied at different times to different clients and audiences. Understand that clients are seeking business partners and good counselors; they are no longer seeking order-takers. That means you have to learn to confidently counsel clients based on solid talent and skills. You cannot fake it.

How much is storytelling (something good journalists develop a skill for) a part of a good campaign?

Story-telling is perhaps the most essential skill in communications. Stories are what every audience responds to, no matter what age, profession or location. In fact, even if you have data, a logical argument and indisputable facts, you will still fail to persuade your audience if you cannot tell a story.

While your work is extremely high profile, what advice would you have for someone starting on the local level?

Act right from the start as though the work you are doing is at the highest-level. Apply the same attention and effort to a simple store opening in a small town as you would managing Fashion Week in New York City and you will always be in demand. To a true professional – especially one starting out in a field – there is no small assignment.

END OF INTERVIEW

The Houston PR Day Conference will take place a The Bayou City Event Center on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Gene Grabowski bio

Gene Grabowski is a distinguished crisis communications counselor and former journalist with a background in litigation issues who leads crisis accounts for high-profile individuals, global corporations, trade associations and government agencies.

A 30-year veteran in the communications field, Mr. Grabowski has been named PR Week’saward as Crisis Manager of the Year for his work on numerous issues including the Kuwaiti detainees in Guantanamo, Roger Clemens’ Congressional perjury case, the series of North American pet food recalls, and the Chinese lead-paint toy recalls.

Before joining Levick, Mr. Grabowski served as the Vice President of Communications and Marketing for The Grocery Manufacturers of America – the world’s largest food trade group representing brand-name food, beverage, and consumer-product companies. In addition to developing and implementing GMA’s media outreach programs, he was the organization’s chief communications strategist, spokesperson, and liaison with industry analysts. He led the industry’s strategic efforts on recalls, biotech foods in Europe, obesity, and global food safety.

Prior to his service at GMA, Mr. Grabowski served as a Director in the Washington office of Burson-Marsteller, where he developed and managed national advocacy and media relations campaigns. As part of his responsibilities at Burson-Marsteller, Mr. Grabowski managed issues for companies including Perrier, Motorola, Philip Morris and Unilever, and worked on discreet matters overseas for governments including Kazakhstan, Tanzania, Uganda and Russia.

For more than six years, Mr. Grabowski served as Media Relations Director for the American Council of Life Insurers, working on major issues ranging from company solvency, industry investment regulations and agent sales and performance standards. A highlight of his tenure at ACLI was his work on the “Harry and Louise” healthcare campaign along with the Health Insurance Association of America.

A former White House news reporter, Mr. Grabowski is an authority on a variety of issues, including crisis communications, food and consumer product recalls, financial regulation, and media training. He also reported on Congress for The Associated Press, specializing in consumer product, health insurance and manufacturing issues.

A Pittsburgh native, Mr. Grabowski earned a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and History at the University of Pittsburgh, and has done graduate work in Management at the University of Michigan. KIAH 39 GM Roger Bare takes over KDAF 33 Dallas too

KIAH 39 General Manager Roger Bare Expands Responsibilities to KDAF 33 Dallas-Fort Worth

Tribune Broadcasting today announced that Roger Bare has been named Senior Vice President/General Manager of the company’s Dallas television station, KDAF-TV, effective Oct. 11.

Bare succeeds Joe Young, who announced his retirement earlier this week.

Bare will assume oversight responsibility for the station in addition to his current duties as General Manager of Tribune’s Houston television station, KIAH-TV. He will continue to report to Larry Wert, Tribune Broadcasting’s President of Broadcast Media.

“Roger has been extremely successful running our station in Houston and serving the community there,” said Wert. “He’s smart, experienced, and has great instincts for what will work and how to grow audience. Importantly, he knows the Texas marketplace.”

Bare has served as Vice President/General Manager of KIAH-TV since April, 2004. This year, under his leadership the station won the prestigious Bonner McLean Public Service Award from the Texas Association of Broadcasters. Bare has held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility at the station since joining it in 1992. Prior to being named Vice President/General Manager, Bare served as KIAH-TV’s general sales manager for six years.

“Dallas is a great market and I look forward to the support and ideas of the talented and creative people at KDAF-TV and KIAH-TV as we charge forward in the weeks ahead,” said Bare.

Bare has been a member of the American Advertising Federation/Houston since 1996, serves as an advisory member for the Media Alliance/Houston, and sits on the board of Directors for the Houston chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He received his degree in advertising from Marshall University in West Virginia.

Keith Monahan in a fight and arrested? Uh, not so fast...

Humor site pits former KIAH 39 meteorologist Keith Monahan against other weathercaster

Former KIAH 39 chief meteorologist Keith Monahan is either making lots of news or none at all depending how you look at it.

It seems news about Monahan, who is now chief meteorologist at KARK in Little Rock, Arkansas, has been making the rounds on the Internet concerning an alleged fight he had with another station's meteorologist. It supposedly led to arrests.

The Rocky City Times reports:

Local Weathermen Jeff Baskin of Fox 16 and Keith Monahan of KARK were arrested along with several members of their news stations late last night after a fight broke out between the two outside of their studio on Capitol Ave.

Witnesses say the disagreement began during show prep for Baskin’s weather segment on the 9 o’clock newscast for Fox16. Monahan entered the weather center the two stations share while Baskin was reviewing his forecast and having mascara applied.

The story says thing allegedly escalated, the two fought, a riot broke up and there were arrests. READ THE REST

Keith Monahan
Keith Monahan
Only thing...THIS NEVER HAPPENED.

"Assure folks there was no fight and no arrests--just a fun story," Monahan told mikemcguff.com. "Jeff Baskin and I really do get along just fine and we've been laughing since yesterday at the story and how many people think it actually happened (we even played along by providing some photos after it got some traction). I mean really, 'meet me at the flagpole!' If folks just read the little disclaimers at the top and bottom of the page."

The story, which as I mentioned appeared on The Rocky City Times, is a big joke. The Rocky City Times website has a disclaimer at the bottom which says, "The content on here is presented as fictional news with an intent for humor."

Monahan says the article got so much attention that he heard it was even talked about on a morning radio show in New York City today. And since it's weather related, even made the discussion boards at weather.com! What would Jim Cantore think?

"Last January, Nexstar (editor's note: KARK's owners) bought the Fox [station] here and moved their operations into our building, we even share the studio, and I think the author was having fun with that," Monahan told me.

I don't know this Baskin guy, but if there were a fight, my money would be on Monahan. According to Monahan's bio:

A graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, Keith received a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in International Affairs and American Politics. By the time his service was up, Captain Monahan served as a Commanding Counterintelligence Officer and Commander of Investigative units.

"This particular story, like a lot of stories here, started with a very true premise," Greg Henderson, Editor-in-Chief at Rock City Times told mikemcguff.com. "Fox16 and KARK (the news stations) are owned by the same parent company and share a newsroom and a lot of the production crew. At the same time, like any news stations they compete for ratings against each other. So what if they had get mad and have an anchorman-style brawl? It sort of went from there."

Henderson tells me that his site is now one of the highest trafficked newsish sites in Arkansas.

Foti Kallergis, marketing expert & former KVUE anchor, joins abc13 as reporter

Foti Kallergis, marketing expert and previous KVUE fill-in anchor, joins KTRK abc13 as reporter

Foti Kallergis
Foti Kallergis

Foti Kallergis revealed on his Facebook fan page he is joining KTRK abc13 as a reporter:

I'm extremely honored to announce that I have accepted a TV Reporter job at Houston's #1 news station, KTRK ABC-13. I always dreamed of reporting in my hometown, so this is a major career accomplishment. It's also a full-circle moment because I started my TV News career at Ch.13 as an intern. I feel honored and blessed to have this opportunity, and I can't wait to serve my hometown.

My first day at ABC-13 will be on Monday Sept. 30th. I will keep you up to date on which newscast you can catch me reporting in everyday.

According to intrepid Austin TV writer Gary Dinges, Kallergis left his reporting/fill-in anchor job at Fox 7 KTBC in early 2012 to work as President of Marketing/Publicity and CEO at Silver Whisk, an Austin-based cooking school he ran with his wife, Myrna.

The TV bug was too much to overcome for Kallergis, because he temporarily returned to Austin TV to anchor mornings at KVUE this past March for three months (maybe we will see him behind the KTRK anchor desk too).

According to his LinkedIn profile, Kallergis has also worked at KFDM in Beaumont.

In addition to TV and the culinary world, Kallergis is also "an experienced celebrity publicist and strategist" according to a press release issued to the Austin media in 2012.

As Kallergis noted, he starts at abc13 KTRK September 30th.

UPDATE
Kallergis gave me an update on Twitter, "I'm no longer the owner of that cooking school (the ex-wife is), and I'm a single father now."

He also added this KTRK reporting job is a temporary one.

LIVESTRONG Foundation communications VP Katherine McLane talks PR secrets

PR authority shares secrets of the trade with mikemcguff.com

Katherine McLane
Katherine McLane
Lots of public relations folks read my blog (and media types that want in PR), so I thought I would bring you an interview with Katherine McLane, Vice President of Communications and External Affairs for the LIVESTRONG Foundation, who will be the closing keynote speaker at the upcoming Houston PR Day Conference.

In addition to LIVESTRONG, McLane has also served as press secretary for the U.S. Department of Education and as a key member of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s campaign team and communications staff (full bio below).

Mike McGuff: You have been involved in high profile situations. As someone who started their career in Texas, what would you say about the notion you have to start out on one of the coasts to be successful?

Katherine McLane: That it's baloney! Texas has some of the best public affairs and public relations firms in the nation. I started out at Public Strategies, Inc. in Austin, now H&K Strategies, and learned the ropes there. My experience there set me up for success working for a governor and a Presidential administration, as well as one of the world's best-known non-profits.

Can you ever prepare for a career in crisis communications or is it something you have to experience first-hand (essentially jumping in feet first and learning as you go while moving up the ranks)?

It is definitely worthwhile to study crisis response, read the 'what NOT to do' playbook and learn from the people and organizations that have done well under pressure. That's a must! Still, nothing compares to first hand experience. Applying academic knowledge when your press inbox is full, your stakeholders are screaming and there's a news van in your parking lot is a skill that comes with practice.

As someone who has led social media teams, how important is social media to the future of public relations?

Social media is the biggest game changer our industry has seen in our lifetimes. How we absorb news, communicate with each other, form opinions on just about everything and become engaged in social, political and commercial causes are all different than they were 10 years ago. And we may have not even begun to scratch the surface when it comes to the evolution of communications as a result of social media.

How different is political PR than commercial work?

Political communications is a pressure cooker unlike any other. Winning is all that matters and the only guarantee is that if your candidate loses, you lose your job. It's a pretty black and white proposition but PR pros build lifelong relationships and learn invaluable lessons working on campaigns early in their careers.

Few of us spend our careers doing just political or campaign PR. Most of us graduate to other arenas, like corporate or commercial groups, which can be equally intense. Imagine being the spokesperson for an oil company with a spill, or a cruise line with a disabled ship. Still, those are the exceptions, not the norm. I'd say commercial PR is more stable for communications pros from a career perspective and offers a broader spectrum of possibilities and industries to choose from.

End of interview

The Houston PR Day Conference will take place a The Bayou City Event Center on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Here is McLane's full bio:

Katherine McLane is Vice President for Communications & External Affairs for the LIVESTRONG Foundation. She serves as the cancer non-profit organization’s chief communications and crisis management architect. Katherine leads strategic communications planning and rapid response operations for the Foundation and is responsible for the promotion of its mission and policy initiatives. Her tenure at the LIVESTRONG Foundation began in the fall of 2007, just in time to lead the organization’s statewide media and outreach campaign for Proposition 15, an initiative that created the
Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas along with $3 billion in funds to support the Institute’s efforts.
Katherine served as press secretary for the U.S. Department of Education under Secretary Margaret Spellings in 2006 and 2007, promoting President Bush’s signature bi-partisan education law, No Child Left Behind. She led crisis communications and rapid response for
the Department and created successful strategies to promote the Education Department’s policies and practices.

From 2003 to 2006, she served as a key member of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s campaign team and communications staff. As Deputy Communications Director and Deputy Press Secretary to the Governor, she helped build public outreach efforts, leading his web and social media teams, establishing stakeholder communications programs, authoring key message and opinion pieces, advising on international trips and leading media relations in the areas of education, military affairs, homeland security, federal relations, emergency response and the environment.
Katherine’s career began in Austin, Texas, at Public Strategies, Inc., public affairs, crisis communications and public relations consulting firm. Working in the media division under Vice Chairman Mark McKinnon, she produced and consulted on regulatory campaign plans for leading clients.

Katherine is a proud graduate of Texas A&M University. Her imaginative twitter handle is @KatherineMcLane.

The New 93Q KKBQ wins Marconi Award Station of the Year

Houston’s Country Music Station: The New 93Q wins prestigious Marconi Award for Station of the Year

Cox Media Group Houston’s station: KKBQ-FM/The New 93Q was named Country Station of the Year at the 2013 National Association of Broadcasters' Marconi Radio Awards.

This is the first time The New 93Q has been bestowed such an honor. The awards were announced Thursday night at the annual NAB Marconi Radio Awards Dinner & Show held during the Radio Show in Orlando, FL.

"This incredible honor is the culmination of hard work by the entire team at The New 93Q,” said CMG Houston Operations Manager Johnny Chiang. “I could not be more proud of the folks whose passion for country music, radio, and our community makes The New 93Q a very special radio station and an incredibly rewarding place to work."

The prestigious awards recognize radio's outstanding personalities and stations. Marconi finalists were selected by a task force of broadcasters, and the winners were voted on by the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Selection Academy. The votes were tabulated by an independent firm.

“I'm extremely proud of the accomplishments by the entire team of 93Q,” said CMG Houston VP and Market Manager Mark Krieschen. “Winning radio's most prestigious award put an exclamation mark on our year!”

The passion KKBQ has for its listeners, talent, community and advertisers is the direct result of The New 93Q reining as Houston’s country music leader and the 1.3M Houstonians who tune in weekly.

Last March I blogged how Miya Shay, KTRK abc13 reporter, and Democratic State Representative Gene Wu were expecting a baby.

Today was baby day for the Shay/Wu family.

"We have a baby boy," exclaimed Shay on Facebook.

With a tweet of a footprint photo came the announcement of the future media/political star and the couple's first child.

Wu also tweeted the baby is seven pounds, 11 ounces.

Congrats to the new family!

KPRC 2 launches new set for 2013

KPRC's new set looks big on air

KPRC 2 launched a brand new newscast set last night at 10pm. And it's big looking. I always liked the late channel 2 90s set in the newsroom, but this new one rivals it.

While it looks like a real set, the station noted on the newscast that a virtual one will also be used for special news coverage like elections.

And get this, chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley didn't use a green screen chroma key wall last night. He did the weather on a large screen made of smaller monitors (see below).  That monitor wall was also used by anchor Dominique Sachse during a news story.

Kyle Montgomery
Ex-KPRC 2 weekend sports anchor Kyle Montgomery has  landed a new gig on Fox Sports' Prime Ticket hosting "Clippers Live" out of Los Angeles.

Montgomery, who left KPRC in early April, told me then he was leaving for something with more of a national presence. He was right about that since Fox's Prime Ticket covers Southern California, Central California, southern Nevada, and Hawaii according to Wikipedia.

Over the weekend, Montgomery also told me he plans to make appearances on another national network in LA but is not ready to reveal which one just yet.

"My time working at KPRC was a blessing for my career," Montgomery told mikemcguff.com months ago. "It's an experience that I will never forget. I want to thank the people of Houston for welcoming me with open arms, and for showing so much support."

Montgomery came to Houston's NBC affiliate from Raycom Sports' Atlantic Coast Conference channel where he had worked since 2011. Before that, Montgomery worked at NBA TV's GameTime and The Jump. From 2008-2011, he was with Turner Sports and hosted Cartoon Networks first sports show Run it Back. He also worked at WSFA 12 Montgomery, AL and WDAM in Hattiesburg, MS.

According to his bio, Montgomery was born and raised in Kansas City and graduated from Alabama State University.

Mary Lee to KING 5 Seattle after KPRC 2

Mary Lee heads to KING 5 Seattle after a European Vacation post KPRC 2

UPDATE
Is Mary Lee still on KPIX 5?

Former KPRC 2 meteorologist Mary Lee tweeted (as you can see above) that she is joining KING 5 in Seattle. She has officially made the move from Houston to the Pacific Northwest after a European vacation.

"I'm so excited to join the amazing KING 5 team in Seattle as their newest meteorologist," Lee told mikemcguff.com. "My parents now live in the Seattle area, so I'm really happy to finally live closer to my family."

Mary Lee
Mary Lee
That made me realize I screwed up Lee's departure post. I had posted that Lee was moving to California, because in her goodbye Facebook message, she said she was moving, "back to the West Coast to be closer to my family." Since she hails from Fairfield in Northern California, I just typed in she was going to The Golden State. Turns out Lee's parents now live in Seattle she later said on Twitter (and to me today).

"I won't ever forget Houston" Lee told me. "KPRC Local 2 viewers have been so sweet to me, incredibly encouraging and supportive. I will miss Houston!"

Lee came to KPRC in June 2010 from KXAN Austin to do weekend mornings and report during the week. According to her bio, Lee started her career in California, with stints at KHSL in Chico and KOVR in Sacramento.

Her first day at KING 5 is September 30th.

KPRC replaced Lee with Idolina Peralez (formerly Idolina Walker at KIFI Local News 8/KIDK in Southeastern Idaho, Southwestern Montana and Northwestern Wyoming).

Houston man making money with Internet radio

Musicradio Bop 70s launches

Back in June 2010, I wrote the post, Can Houston man make money with Internet radio? He's trying. Maybe, we have an answer now. That man is Houston resident Harold Levine and now he is announcing new stations that are going commercial.

The Bop Radio Group of Internet radio stations based in Houston, Texas is excited to announce the launch of its sixth station, Musicradio Bop 70s, featuring an all-seventies music format. Musicradio Bop 70s is the group’s first entry into the seventies decade—the group’s existing five stations cover the hit songs of the thirties, forties, fifties and sixtie decades.

Initially, Musicradio Bop 70s can be launched and heard on Internet portals BopRadio.com, LoudCity.com, Shoutcast.com and Radionomy.com. Like its sister stations, it is expected that the station will soon be available on iTunes.com and AhaRadio.com as well.

The first station launched by The Bop Radio Group, Radio Bop, playing the hits of the fifties and early sixties, began broadcasting on February 1, 2006. Collectively, the present five stations have listeners in over 150 countries and over 350,000 TLH (total listening hours) per month. With the launch of Musicradio Bop 70s this month and the group’s seventh station The TOP 40 Time Clock in October, total listenership is expected to reach over 600,000 TLH by year-end according to the group’s Program Director Harold Levine.

The stations are actually going commercial in October through Belgium-based Radionomy.com who will insert commercials into the stations streams based on the IP addresses of individual listeners. According to Levine, commercial breaks will be limited to 4 minutes per hour.

Radio Bop 60s, which plays the hits of the sixties decade, will also begin airing episodes of the sixties radio serial Chickenman beginning September 30, 2013, at 20 minutes before every third hour.

Dave Ward apologizes for abc13 KTRK newscast

Technical errors add up and KTRK abc13 anchor Dave Ward says something about it on air

UPDATE NOVEMBER 10, 2014
Dave Ward to step down from KTRK ABC13's 10pm news
Dave Ward to start 2015 with reduced workload

UPDATE
Video is now embedded above.

It's pretty clear that KTRK abc13 has had some technical issues lately.

In fact, channel 13 viewers have been sending me phone photos taken from TV screens showing problems like misspellings as of late too. I'm sure if you scrutinize my blog, you'll find I don't much room to point fingerz fingers.

Dave Ward
Dave Ward
But I guess the technical errors got to be too much for legendary 13 anchor Dave Ward this past Tuesday night. A viewer let me know that Ward actually apologized at the end of the newscast calling it a "train wreck" (this has been confirmed with others who saw it too). Others told me co-anchor Gina Gaston quickly said something like "Oh, it wasn't that bad."

KTRK has apparently cancelled its 10pm replay which ran early the next morning so I couldn't see this all for myself.

The viewer said there was a problem during the weather segment, wrong video at other times, wrong lottery numbers (I do not have this confirmed).

There is a maxim in the broadcast biz that you do not point out errors. However, I applaud Ward for apologizing if the problems keep adding up like the national debt. At a point, you don't want to insult the audience's intelligence and act like nothing is wrong.

I'm always here if you see anything else like this. Email me.

UPDATE
Found out there was some talk on Twitter about that night's newscast too.

VIDEO: WFAA highlights 70s show 'People' & the disco tribute

WFAA 1970s show People and its arm twisted disco tribute show with Playboy dancers

When I worked at KTRK, I really liked putting classic channel 13 video on its website in a thematic collection. Once I did an entire section on old Astroworld footage. It was a big hit with the viewers.

That's why I got excited how WFAA did the same thing on YouTube with its old People show from the late 70s. Let's travel back to June 14, 1978 when host Michael Brown (not the former Houston hand surgeon) reluctantly did a disco tribute complete with Dallas Playboy club dancers. Brown even implores the audience to not switch the channel to Phil Donahue.

HERE IS THE REST:
People Show Disco Part 3
People Show Part 4

Just to keep the illusion of my manhood up, while I was writing this post, I was listening to Metallica - Leper Messiah (Live - Shanghai, China). The band even messes up at the beginning of the concert performance. Don't worry, it's still good.

Ex-AP & Chron editor Kit Frieden joins Androvett Houston

Associated Press Editor Kit Frieden Joins Androvett Legal Media & Marketing in Houston

It was just announced that Hearst Newspapers named Nancy Barnes of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis as editor and executive vice president for news at the Houston Chronicle. Now here is more Chron related news:

Kit Frieden
Kit Frieden
The Texas-based legal public relations and marketing firm Androvett Legal Media & Marketing is proud to announce the addition of Kit Frieden, formerly the Health & Science Editor for The Associated Press (AP) in New York.

Ms. Frieden, who joins Androvett’s Houston office, is returning to the city where she worked for nine years as State Editor for the Houston Chronicle before joining AP in 2001.

“I am thrilled to be returning to Texas and joining Androvett, a dynamic firm that works with some of the best lawyers and law firms in the country,” says Ms. Frieden. “The firm’s clients have terrific stories to tell.”

A longtime Texas journalist, Ms. Frieden moved to New York in 2001 to work as Assistant Newsfeatures Editor for AP, where she directed medical and science features and enterprise stories. Four years later, she took on a larger role, managing AP’s daily science and health coverage worldwide. She established the first science desk for AP, the world’s oldest news organization, expanding its team of science writers and overseeing stories that included climate change, space flight, global disease outbreaks and medical breakthroughs. Her work earned her the Gramling Journalism Award, one of AP’s highest honors.

“We are very excited that Kit has joined our team,” says Mike Androvett, CEO and founder of the Dallas-based company. “Her experience in handling major national and international stories will benefit our company and all our clients.”

In addition to her years at the Houston Chronicle, where she oversaw coverage of the tragic fire at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco and state politics during former Gov. George W. Bush’s tenure, Ms. Frieden also worked for Dallas Life, the Sunday magazine previously published by The Dallas Morning News, and as Texas news editor for AP.

Androvett Legal Media & Marketing assists attorneys and law firms with public relations, crisis communications, marketing and advertising. The firm maintains offices in Dallas and Houston.

Crystal Kobza returns to KTRK abc13

Crystal Kobza back reporting at abc13 KTRK after nine month or so absence

Crystal Kobza
Crystal Kobza
I've been receiving reports that former KTRK abc13 reporter Crystal Kobza has returned to the Disney/ABC owned station.

Last time Kobza showed up for a freelance gig at the station, my email and social media accounts were filled up with viewers wanting to know more about her. Those mega-Kobza fans put the reporter on the 12th spot of my most viewed blog posts for 2012.

History is clearly repeating itself.

To put this in context, those high trafficked posts usually consist of news about Dominique Sachse, Jennifer Reyna, Casey Curry or news about a longtime anchor leaving (not about a new hire generally).

With that kind of channel 13 viewer star power, I'm wondering if Kobza will eventually be sitting behind a Houston anchor desk. In fact, some have told me she reminds them of the second coming of Shara Fryer.

Before working as a reporter in a temporary capacity at KTRK abc13 for around eight months in 2012, Kobza was briefly an anchor for KOB Eyewitness News 4 Albuquerque. She started her TV career in Tyler at KETK as a reporter - eventually anchoring for Fox 51 News East Texas KFXK, Fox 44 KWKT Waco/Kileen/Temple and Fox 33 Shreveport Ark-La-Tex KMSS.

Kobza graduated from University of St. Thomas in Houston in 2005. She interned at Fox 26 KRIV and KPRC 2.

Now, Kobza won't be the only new face showing up to channel 13 this fall. There are lots of KTRK abc13 reporters and anchors pregnant so more temps will have to fill the spaces as maternity leaves are taken. If you see new reporters or anchors popping up - email me.
