Mike Barajas' old job posted by Fox 26 KRIV

I believe it was just posted this week because that's when I started getting inquiries about it. Here is former KRIV Fox 26 anchor Mike Barajas' job:

Anchor/Reporter -- Full Time -- Regular
Anchor 5P and 9P newscasts M-F and also develop/produce field and series pieces for various newscasts, web, and social media outlets. Will maintain daily blog, represent station in community activities, and mentor less experienced reporters, producers, and anchors. Will participate in editorial process and foster proper newsroom etiquette and philosophy. Requires degree in Journalism or related field and 5 years experience as broadcast television anchor. Must be computer literate and proficient with multi-media formats. Need to have excellent communication skills and demonstrate positive attitude, leadership skills and good news judgment.

Below the anchor job post is another one that caught my eye:

Photographer -- Full Time -- Regular
Shoot on Panasonic P2 and non-linear edit. Operate camera, lights, wireless mics, portable/permanent editing gear, Avstar newsroom software, cell phone, and 2-way. Safely operate microwave live truck while following company and industry safety standards. Must willingly accept direction from Assignment Desk. Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field preferred. Three years paid broadcast news experience as a photographer/photojournalist required.

First of all, while I was working for KIAH 39 and we'd run into Fox 26 field crews, I don't think they were shooting on a Panasonic P2 camera. This must be new.

But forget about the technical stuff, my favorite line is "Must willingly accept direction from Assignment Desk." How many newsrooms have you seen the assignments desk editors and field crews butt heads? Oh right...all of them!

XFINITY finally 'replaces' Comcast on my cable box

The other night I fell asleep on the couch watching TV after a grueling blogging session. Something woke me up. The TV was on, but the cable box was off. Then the box turned back on and some crazy numbers were flashing on the box's screen.

Is this a dream? Are the Mayan prophecies taking place a year early? Is my cable possessed? Did I not pay the bill?

All of those scenarios stormed through my head, but then I just realized I was getting my promised XFINITY upgrade.

I've blogged about the XFINITY Houston upgrade earlier this year. Many TV viewers in the Bayou City area already have it. In case you are an XFINITY 'late bloomer' like myself, here are some screenshots I grabbed for you.

The guide display is obviously different and very blue. As you can see there is an additional way to display an individual channel's programming. You get that screen by pressing guide twice. Guide is no longer an exit button, you really have to use the 'exit' button below it.

The On Demand screen is way better than the previous version. The old screen was not very 'elegant' as an MBA candidate might say.

The good news is that all of the previously recorded shows on my DVR are still there. The only question is how do you dump those shows to DVD now? "Copy to VCR" was a feature on the old Comcast system...not seeing that now. I've got some of my old KIAH 39 News stories on there and they need to be archived. Oh...that and the entire season of Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami.

KHOU 11 feedback on new slogan/logo plus anchor IDs

I've received a lot of comments about the new KHOU 11 slogan and logo. One question that kept coming up concerned the station's longtime slogan "The Spirit of Texas." So is that phrase out?

Lisa Shumate, the KHOU 11 Director of Programming and Marketing, clues us in on that and goes into detail about the station's thinking for developing the new image.

"'KHOU Stands for Houston' emphasizes the connection between our call letters and our television market," Shumate told the mikemcguff.com blog. "We will now refer to the station as 'KHOU 11.'
The logo redesign includes a two color treatment that calls attention to "HOU" and includes the Texas star. We will no longer be using 'The Spirit of Texas.'"

Shumate adds the feedback on the new campaign has been overwhelmingly positive.

You might remember that KHOU most recently branded itself as Channel 11 or 11 News.

Also while you're here, enjoy some of the new KHOU 11 anchor IDs:

For those keeping score, Travis Rodgers is Jim Rome's former producer, which makes this all the more entertaining.

KHOU 11's new graphics and image spot

Yesterday KHOU 11 and KIAH 39 unleashed new branded looks on Houston (KPRC 2 introduced new news graphics last week).

"KHOU Stands for Houston" is the Houston Belo stations new slogan. I have contacted KHOU to see if this replaced longtime slogan "The Spirit of Texas" after receiving that question from readers.

In the meantime, here are screen captures using my camera phone (so it is not perfect) of KHOU's new news graphics and other stuff. Scroll below for the new image promo. The look was launched on Monday's noon newscast.

KIAH 39 becomes CW39 again with new look starting today

Earlier today I mentioned KHOU 11 has adopted a new slogan and logo, last week KPRC 2 introduced new graphics and now another Houston station is getting a graphical makeover.

Starting today, KIAH 39 is going back to the CW39 branding with a new look.

"In recent months we identified ourselves as 'Channel 39,'" Theressa Virgil, Director of I & I for KIAH-TV told the mikemcguff.com blog. "Now we are embracing our affiliation with The CW network while acknowledging our home base, so we are now 'CW39 – Real Houston.'"

Virgil tells me the “CW39 – Real Houston” bug will be attached to the station's daily programming. With the new branding also comes the station's new IDs and promos (WATCH ABOVE VIDEO).

KIAH 39 also synced its new 39online.com website to the new on-air look.

Which other Houston station is about to make aesthetic changes? If I were a betting man, I'd start a pool!

"KHOU 11 Stands For Houston" new logo and slogan

KHOU reporter Tiffany Craig snapped a photo for you and me this weekend that gives us a preview of the new KHOU 11 slogan and logo. It's called "KHOU 11 Stands For Houston" she also tweeted. Craig took a photo of the new station logo going on the side of its building.

This morning, I noticed the new logo is on KHOU.com.

According to Trademarkia.com (yes, that is a real website), KHOU's parent company Belo applied to trademark that slogan on Thursday, October 21, 2010.

I understand the station might have more on this on its noon news today if it didn't already mention it on the morning show.

Controversy over SportsRadio 610's hottest Houston woman in the media bracket

In my Monday media list o' stories I linked to the SportsRadio 610 KILT Rich Lord and Josh Innes hottest Houston woman in the media bracket.

I got this comment later in the day:

Anonymous said...
It's kind of sad that thest guys have so little respect for women that they do this kind of contest. It's even worse that these women have such low self-esteem that they think it's okay to participate in it. I guess when you basically have your job, becuase a bunch of unattractive men think you are "hot", then you would be okay with it. It's 2011 and the worth of a woman is still based on how she "appears" to look and whether or not she turns on a bunch of gross-looking men. When is the worth of a woman going to be based on intelligence and talent? A strong, secure man would have a problem with this contest and he would speak up. I guess there are none at a certain radio company in town!

Now the Houston Press reports the contest is attracting some more controversy.

KTRK 13 reporter tackles suspect on camera; the story behind the classic clip

Earlier this month I showed you this amazing report that ran on KTRK 13 in the late 80s. It features former Houston TV reporter Carlos Aguilar tackling a suspect trying to escape police. I found out former KTRK photographer John Miller shot the amazing footage.

Since I posted the clip, which resurfaced on YouTube after an earlier post where I attempted to recall the event, I've talked with Carols Aguilar in person and his wife over Facebook. Charlotte Perry Aguilar gave me this very detailed account of the video.

THE FOLLOWING IS WRITTEN BY Charlotte Perry Aguilar:

Aguilar after tackling the suspect near I-10.
"I can tell you with certainty that it is from 1987; I believe it was August. I know this because I had just moved to Houston from L.A. and was ready to hatch our first child, who was born in September.

Carlos had called me during the day to tell me about the awful story he was covering. He was especially moved because we were very baby-minded and it involved a newborn baby (who did suffer serious brain damage, he learned later). I was watching live coverage that evening, and Carlos was reporting from the hospital, showed the taped report of what had happened, and said the guy had escaped custody.

Apparently several people nearby saw the live shot, had spotted the suspect hitchhiking along I-10 and ran over to tell Carlos. There were no guards or cops around but Carlos ran smack into the suspect trying to make his getaway, and that's what you see. I nearly gave birth on the spot, watching this unfold. (My best friend from California was visiting and watching with me and wanted to take me back with her because she decided Carlos was seriously crazy.)

Despite KTRK's cautionary "don't copy this" follow-up coverage with dear Stephen (Gauvain), this video was as viral as anything could be in those days. The station made promos of it and put Carlos on every public affairs show. It ran on CNN. He received a commendation from Mayor (Kathy) Whitmire.

To this day, people still recognize Carlos and bring up this incident. We hadn't seen in since then, and I thank you greatly for helping it resurface. Our two children (now grown) and Carlos' two older girls had never seen it, and they're getting quite a charge out of Gonzo Dad. But the important thing, to me, was that he didn't know the camera was rolling. Carlos just has a very strong sense of justice and that's what was captured on tape -- not some reporter trying to showboat."
- Charlotte Perry Aguilar

Charlotte also told me the clip was spread to ABC and all of its stations too.

Houstonians build website to let you gripe and air frustrations

Saturday Night Live: The Best of Dana Carvey [VHS]Houstonians Steve Richey and Jason Hardy have been racking their brains for a new business idea.

"After a marathon stretch of absolutely nothing that was sticking to the proverbial wall the phrase 'Special Place in Hell' kept popping up," Richey told the mikemcguff.com blog.

Keeping the phrase in mind that sounds like something straight from Dana Carvey's lips as The Church Lady on Saturday Night Live, the two entrepreneurs kept thinking. Between the two of them, they've started 15 different companies. That includes everything from a garage door company, a web firm, all the way to a show called Huntingfreak.com.

Even with all of their past experience, no ideas were coming.  Then they returned to the phrase they had thought of earlier. They checked to see if TSPIH.com and the actual phrase had a .com registered. The answer was no, so they bought both and started developing the site. It would become a place where folks can come and air their frustrations.

"We decided we wanted to give people a place to complain, laugh at and editorialize the dysfunction in their lives," Richey told me. "Can we associate with these people? Sure. I think in someway we've all laughed at inappropriate times or gotten upset with the person who goes through the 10 items or less lane with 30 things in their cart. And yes they are always in front of you. So we thought if we could give people a fun outlet, we may be able to make a go of it."

To join in, all you have to do is register with the site and post. Other users vote to like or dislike your gripe.

Some recent entries include:

There is a special place in hell..
"...for the person who texts while I'm talking to them. Trust me I can handle your undivided attention."
"...for people who use song lyrics as their Facebook status."
"...for people who are really good at Words With Friends...no one likes you Mr. 87 points."
"...for the dudes that call you "Boss" when addressing you. Can't decide if that is friendly, strange or creepy."
"...for all web designers who add background music to web pages."

From there you can send someone you know to the place (complaint entry).  It's great for passive aggressive types.

Richey says the site launched two weeks ago and has already seen a decent amount of traffic. In fact, it has had visitors from as far away as China, Germany and the UK. The site makes money from ads and some premium features. To send someone to that "special place" costs you credits which you can purchase with real money.

KHOU 11 promotes Dan Lyons to Vice President, Sales

KHOU 11 in Houston has a new person in charge of its sales department the station announced today:

Dan Lyons, KHOU-TV’s Director of Sales since 2006, is promoted to Vice President, Sales
effective today.

“Dan’s contributions to KHOU have distinguished him as a leader and integral part of this station’s strong financial performance,” said Susan McEldoon, KHOU-TV President and General Manager.

Since joining the station, Lyons has led several significant integrated media initiatives that blend KHOU’s television, Web and mobile assets. He successfully managed the Sales team through difficult economic conditions affecting the market in 2008 and 2009. Then in 2010, Lyons led the Sales Department to overachieve its goals.

“I truly appreciate my job, my colleagues and the great work environment that provides our team the support to perform exceptional work,” said Lyons of his promotion. “It’s a privilege to work at KHOU.”

Prior to joining KHOU in 2006, Lyons was Vice President, Group Director of Sales for the broadcast division of the New York Times Company. He also spent 12 years with Clear Channel TV as Director of Sales at stations in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jacksonville, Florida and Providence, Rhode Island.

Lyons began his career in 1989 as a Research Analyst in New York with Seltel.

NewsFix debuts on KIAH 39; McGuff talks about it on Talk650 AM Monday

People have been sending their comments to me (public/private) about NewsFix on KIAH 39. It debuted Saturday night at 5 and 9pm.

Here is my original post in July 2010 talking about it's big announcement. Lots of things happened since that original post. People left 39, people were hired and for me personally, I was hired as a freelance reporter for KIAH 39 to hold down the news fort until NewsFix's arrival.

Well NewsFix is here and I'm gone from channel 39. Since I am no longer a Tribune employee, I am free to return to my blogging roots and talk about NewsFix.

In fact, I will be talking about the NewsFix revolution on the Talk650 KIKK-AM Morning Show at the lovely CBS Houston studios Monday morning at 9:30am. Brent Clanton and Steven Kay have been kind enough to bring me on...so make sure to listen!

KPRC 2 gets new news director Deborah Collura, plus her other duties

UPDATE MAY 05, 2014
KPRC ND Deborah Collura leaves for WCNC Charlotte

Many TV news directors feel they probably have enough responsibility with their respective newsroom. Not Deborah Collura.

She has just been named the KPRC 2 news director. This in addition to her duties as vice president of news for Post-Newsweek Stations (KPRC's owner).

Here is more about Collura's past from her bio:

She was the news director at WDIV-TV and solidified the NBC affiliate's reputation as an award-winning and top-rated Detroit news station.
Collura started at WDIV-TV in July 1997.
Prior to arriving at WDIV, she was vice president of news at the NBC affiliate, WTVJ-TV in Miami. At KTSP-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Collura served as news director from 1991 to 1993. In Sacramento at KCRA-TV from 1987 to 1991, she became assistant news director after serving as an executive producer.
At KSDK-TV in St. Louis, she was a news producer from 1984 to 1986 and at WREX-TV in Rockford, Ill., she was a news producer and later became executive producer.

As I have mentioned before, Collura was already working from KPRC in the past few months.

Congratulations to Collura.

KIAH 39 anchor Katishia Cosley to head back home to KTRK 13

And the swapping between channels 13 and 39 (and vice versa) continues. Following photographer Matt Robbins from KIAH 39 to the KTRK 13 programming department is Katishia Cosley. You've watched Cosley anchor/report on 39 for a few years, but observant Houston TV viewers will remember her freelance reporter days at KTRK 13.

As pointed out on Twitter, Cosley is the second employee to return to work at KTRK in the last month.

Cosley will be a host/producer on a new show KTRK is producing for its Live Well HD network. According to the recent job opening, the show will have a consumer bent:

Are you a savvy bargain hunter? The person who knows the secrets to scoring the best deals in town? KTRK-TV, the ABC/Disney owned station located in Houston, TX has an immediate opening for a Show Host/Reporter/Producer for an innovative new programming project.

Cosley has experience in that world. She reported on "saving money" for channel 39's On the Cheap segment.

Congrats to Katishia...she'll be good for this gig. I enjoyed working with her at both KTRK and KIAH.

Warning about Japan earthquake charitable giving

Several groups have warnings before you donate money to Japan's earthquake relief:

As we learn more about the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that hit near the northeast coast of Japan on Friday, the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance warns that — as occurred following the tsunami in 2004, Katrina in 2005 and the earthquake in Haiti just last year — fraudulent charities will likely emerge to try and scam donations from well-meaning Americans. BBB WGA urges givers to make sure their donations will go to legitimate and reputable charities and relief efforts that have the capability to help those in need.

“Whenever there is a major natural disaster, be it home or abroad, there are two things you can count on. The first is the generosity of Americans to donate time and money to help victims, and the second is the appearance of poorly run and in some cases fraudulent charities,” said Art Taylor, President and CEO of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance. “Not only do Americans need to be concerned about avoiding fraud, they also need to make sure their money goes to competent relief organizations that are equipped and experienced to handle the unique challenges of providing assistance.”

READ WARNING TIPS FROM BBB

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reminds the public to use caution when making donations in the aftermath of natural disasters. Unfortunately, criminals can exploit these tragedies for their own gain by sending fraudulent e-mails and creating phony websites designed to solicit contributions.

The FBI and the National Center for Disaster Fraud have an existing tip line to receive information from the public about suspected fraud associated with the earthquake and tsunami that affected Japan. Tips should be reported to the National Center for Disaster Fraud, (866) 720-5721. The line is staffed by a live operator 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additionally, e-mails can be sent to disaster@leo.gov, and information can be faxed to (225) 334-4707.

KTRK 13's Marvin Zindler photography exhibit: Bayou City Noir

If you've been reading this blog over the years, you know I interned with KTRK Action 13's Marvin Zindler. In 2007, when he passed away, I developed an extensive online memorial section for him on abc13.com.

So I was glad to hear that Zindler still is in Houston's consciousness with a new photography exhibit. These are photos he took while working at the defunct version of The Houston Press way before his days at Channel 13. Here is more from the press release:

The Museum of Printing History and Houston Arts and Media are proud to present the exhibition Bayou City Noir: The Photography of Marvin Zindler.

For decades, Zindler was known in Houston and throughout the world as KTRKTV’s flamboyant consumer affairs reporter and advocate for the indigent.

However, what many do not know is that during the early 1950s, Zindler prowled Houston’s streets as a newspaper photographer covering the crime beat. Working for the now-defunct daily Houston Press, Zindler caught Houstonians at their most vulnerable. Crime suspects, robbery victims, socialites, wayward juveniles
and even domestic violence victims were captured in unflinching detail.

Bayou City Noir: The Photography of Marvin Zindler not only provides a dramatic look at the photographic eye of a Houston icon, it spotlights the days when big city journalism captured the drama of the day, and when Houston was known as the murder capital of the nation. Many of the photos exhibited have never before been seen publicly or have not been seen since publication in the early 1950s. Some of the photos come from the Houston Press collection at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center while others are graciously provided by the Zindler family.

Zindler was born in Houston on August 10, 1921. His media career began in the 1940s as a radio disc jockey while also employed at his father’s clothing store. In 1950, he became a cameraman and reporter for Southwest Film Production Company, which provided news for KPRC (Channel 2). Two years later, Zindler joined the Houston Press to work as a freelance photographer. He eventually left the retail business and joined the Harris County Sheriff’s Department in 1962.

Two years before joining KTRK (Channel 13) in 1973, Zindler established a consumer fraud division with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

At KTRK, Zindler quickly made headlines through reports that led to the closure of the Chicken Ranch brothel in La Grange, Texas. The work became the inspiration of the Broadway musical and film “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” Aside from his investigative work, Zindler also highlighted the cleanliness of Houston’s restaurants through his rat and roach reports. Finally, with the help of Houston doctors, Zindler also made sure thousands of indigent children around the world had access to needed medical care. Zindler died in 2007.

Fox 26 KRIV reporter Sally MacDonald's new duty

Every week in the Houston TV world, someone is having a baby.

It was recently brought to my attention that Fox 26 KRIV reporter Sally MacDonald just gave birth weeks ago. Jenna Martin was born on February 23. Sally's husband and Jenna's father is KPRC 2 photographer Brandon Martin.

I went back and found Ken Hoffman reported Jenna weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces. Hoffman also mentioned that MacDonald's father is Jerry MacDonald, CEO of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. That's a cool factoid.

Congratulations.

Houston media celebs out in full force at Cirque du Soleil's OVO

Ovo
Cirque du Soleil was kind enough to provide me tickets Wednesday night (through my blog in full disclosure) to its latest show playing in Houston called OVO. You can catch OVO under the Grand Chapiteau at Sam Houston Race Park now through April 10th.

It is classic Cirque. You'll see some amazing performers do things, that if this were a movie, would require CGI to pull off. However I must admit, the wife and I enjoyed some of the previous Cirque shows that rolled into Houston a bit more. Here is more info on the show

Since this was a media preview night, I saw a ton of Houston's broadcasting finest out in full force. This is the part where I pretend to be former Houston Chronicle society columnist Shelby Hodge. I personally talked with Michael Garfield "The High Tech Texan," Fox 26 KRIV "My Tech Guy" Doug Delony and Mix 96.5's Dave Morales.

In the crowd I spotted KPRC 2 morning anchor Owen Conflenti, KIAH 39's Maggie Flecknoe, Houston 55 KTBU's Lara Bell and Hot 95.7 KKHH's Kelly Kelly.

While not in broadcasting, but no less of a celeb, I got to quickly chat with Ed Schipul, the namesake of Schipul - The Web Marketing Company.

I'm exhausted now. I belong in front of a computer, not out trying to spot Houston's glitterati! After writing this blog for a few years, who knows if these people want to hug me or just punch me in the face?

UPDATE: To prove why I am know Shelby Hodge, Mike Glenn of the Houston Chronicle writes in to say he was there too!

Travis Herzog emailed and says he was not there as I originally blogged. He must have a doppelgänger out there. If he ever needs a stand-in, he should find this guy! Or maybe I need glasses.

Becks Prime open in Houston's Hermann Park

Becks Prime burgers is opening in Hermann Park. It's taking over the spot where the less than spectacular (in my opinion) Little Bigs used to be near the train depot.

I snapped this photo on Wednesday after riding the train with my son (highly recommend activity.

Here is more from the Hermann Park Conservancy page:

Great news! Becks Prime will be operating the cafe at Hermann Park during weekends in March and the week of Spring Break (March 5, 6, 12-20, 26, and 27). They will open for lunch each day at 11:00am. The cafe is located in Lake Plaza (adjacent to the main Houston Zoo entrance) between Kinder Station and the pedal boat lagoon.

So it sounds like it is a limited time only. If you have kids, don't worry, the site says there is a child's menu available.

Houston's Univision 45 KXLN to get local morning newscast

Example of Univision LA morning newscast

Morning news is hot ratings-wise for many stations. You've got a pretty captive audience who is getting ready for work and not able to flip channels. That means good advertising for the station.

So on that note, Univision is entering the morning news war. The Spanish-language network already has morning news in Los Angeles and now it's rumored to be coming to Houston on Channel 45 KXLN in early April.

"Houston is a key Hispanic market no question, and it makes sense to have a Spanish local morning show," Ray Fohr with public relations and marketing agency Fleishman Hillard in Houston told mikemikemcguff.com.

In the case of Univision LA, the show is a little lighter in tone much like any other morning newscast. Houston's first Spanish-language morning news on Univision 45 should be similar.

"I think the new show will be a good addition to what’s already a strong news product portfolio from KXLN, and it’ll also allow them to have more fun in terms of the type of news stories they can offer viewers, like cooking, entertainment and others," Fohr added.

I contacted KXLN for comment but did not hear back.

KPRC 2 morning anchor Lauren Freeman was first, followed by KIAH 39 sports director Jorge Vargas.

Benton blogs about the others still waiting for their due date.

VIDEO: KTRK 13 reporter Carlos Aguilar tackles suspect

UPDATE
The story behind the classic clip

Just the other day when I blogged about Seattle KOMO reporter Shomari Stone breaking up a fight, I tried to tie in a Houston event from years before. That story was about KTRK 13 reporter Carlos Aguilar trying to shoot a stand up in the field, but ending up chasing down a suspect running from Houston police.

Turns out I got it wrong.

After my post, that video magically appeared online. It's actually the first time I've ever seen it first-hand (only hearing about it before). That video, which took place somewhere between 1985 and 1990, actually had Aguilar confronting a wanted man on camera. When the suspect flees, Aguilar chases and tackles him. Aguilar then holds the man for police. WATCH ABOVE

Check out the anchor! It's current KTRK 13 assistant news director Don Kobos (and former KTRK reporter). The reporter on the story was Stephen Gauvain (1946 - 1996).
