Haley Hernandez interviewed by Houston Moms

Haley Hernandez was recently interviewed on the Houston Moms on the Move podcast with Meagan Clanahan.

- Haley Hernandez is author of School Makes You Super
- Brandi Smith joins Houston Moms, talks leaving TV

The KPRC 2 morning health reporter discusses the realities of balancing a career in live TV with motherhood, and Hernandez gets candid about the "beautiful (and sometimes messy) balance" of raising two young boys.

Key topics covered in the episode include:

- Mental Health and Burnout: Hernandez discusses the emotional realities of postpartum life, mental health, and dispelling the myths of "having it all."

- Work-Life Balance: How she manages early mornings, live television, and mom life.

- Asking for Help: The difficulty and importance of learning to ask for help as a mother.

- Mom Hacks and Favorites: Her favorite meals, "mom hacks," "TJ Maxx resets," and family-friendly Houston spots.

A central theme of the episode is the importance of honesty and self-acceptance in motherhood, highlighted by the quote: "You can love the death out of your kids… and still not feel joyful every moment. And that's okay."

Shern-Min Chow to leave KHOU 11 Houston

Shern-Min Chow

Shern-Min Chow will leave her KHOU 11 Houston anchor position on February 9, 2026.

UPDATE: WATCH Chow sign-off from KHOU

Chow is a veteran anchor and reporter at KHOU 11 Houston, anchoring the station’s midday and 4 p.m. newscasts has also worked for KPRC 2 and ABC13 Houston.

"Shern-Min, welcome to the other side of TV," former KHOU 11 anchor Jerome Gray (now of HCTRA) told mikemcguff.com.  "You should be very proud of your work and longevity in the business. Congratulations."

“Every time I think of Shern-Min, I can’t help but smile. She made the KHOU newsroom better just by being there," former KHOU 11 news director Sally Ramirez (now senior vice president of news for NBCU Local Chicago) told mikemcguff.com. "She brought heart, curiosity, and quiet confidence to her work every day. I have nothing but admiration for Shern-Min, and I’ll never forget the kindness she showed me during my time in Houston.  I wish her all the very best in a well-deserved retirement!”

“I had the pleasure of working with Shern-Min during my tenure at KHOU11 (2018-2024)," former KHOU 11 general manager Robert Springer (now president & GM of Colorado Public Television) told mikemcguff.com.   "I have often described Shern-Min Chow as an icon.  Someone who, through consistent hard work, commitment, and integrity, has earned a place of trust and authority in the hearts and minds of Houstonians.  Her devotion to the Gulf Coast community is something of a rarity in this business; she was never a 'tourist' looking to grow her career in a large market and then move on, but rather a passionate and versatile professional with a deep sense of purpose to inform the community and ultimately to empower her fellow Houstonians.  I kept a short list of colleagues who I knew could get anyone on the phone at any time, and Shern-Min shared space on that list with other icons: Len Cannon, Mia Gradney, Ron Treviño, and Deborah Duncan.  It’s a notable distinction, and one that can only be earned by doing the work and doing it well. While her retirement is a loss for the journalism community, I hope the road ahead brings her much happiness and that her career can serve as an example for others in the industry.”

"Shern-Min Chow is a Houston TV legend. Period," former KHOU 11 anchor Brandi Smith (now Rice University and Houston Moms) told mikemcguff.com. "Working alongside her for seven of her many years at KHOU 11 offered me a front-row seat to something rare in local television: true adaptability. At a time when many veteran reporters struggled with the industry’s rapid shifts, Shern-Min leaned in. When the job demanded new skills, she learned them (from shooting video on an iPad to embracing the role of a multimedia journalist) with resolve. Watching her meet those challenges was quietly inspiring and a firm reminder that experience is not a finish line; it's a foundation. Her willingness to evolve underscored a career defined not just by longevity, but by relevance and it set an example that growth and excellence can continue at every stage."

The legendary Houston anchor released the news in a social media video (WATCH BELOW):

"After nearly 30 years at KHOU, my last day at channel 11 will be on February the 9th.

There have been some other projects that I wanted to do but can't. While a full-time employee here, I'll have more on that later.

But right now I just want to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you for tuning in all of these years. When I started, it was just on TV. Now it's on social media. It's digital and online. It has been a privilege to meet many of you in person. Many of you online, and to share your stories. I hope you'll keep in touch here on the Insta face. I really love hearing from you all and social media is a great way to do that. Right now though, I just want to take a second to say thank you.

Reporting has been truly a great joy of my life, and I want to say thank you to you for allowing me the chance to do that. So for now, ciao. And as always, stay tuned."

Chow joined KHOU in July 1996 as a weekend anchor from KPRC.

The Yale University graduate also worked for KENS 5 in San Antonio and began as a stringer for Newsweek.

When she began her television news career, Chow was the only Asian American broadcaster in San Antonio and later in Houston.  She says she is encouraged by how much the industry has evolved since then.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, she has reported from the center of some of the nation’s most significant events — standing in the eye of hurricanes Andrew, Harvey, and Katrina, covering the Loma Prieta and Northridge earthquakes, enduring Winter Storm Uri, and reporting on historic floods, fires, and wildfires. Her work has taken her inside Mexican prisons, into the O.J. Simpson media compound, and into neighborhoods impacted by violent crime — often arriving unannounced and leaving with compelling, impactful stories.

Her notable coverage includes the Robert Durst trial, the Andrea Yates murders, Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets in China, election-night victories for presidential and gubernatorial races, and the James Beard Chefs’ Roundtable series. Chow has interviewed presidents, cabinet secretaries, scientists, celebrities, criminals, and serial killers. Her energy and engagement are especially evident during major sports moments, including the Astros’ playoff runs, World Series championships, and victory parades from 2017 to 2023.

Chow’s work has been recognized with numerous honors, including a Houston Press Club Award for Best Series, a Texas Associated Press Award for Best Spot Newscast-Producer, and an Emmy Award for the documentary Hong Kong Under the Dragon. The project was a career highlight, in part because her father, Ken Chow, an engineer, joined the production as a field producer and translator.

Chow speaks conversational Mandarin and Shanghainese and has studied Spanish, French, and German. She routinely uses Spanish in the field.

Deeply committed to the Houston community, Chow has made hundreds of community appearances and currently serves on the advisory boards of the Asia Society and the Chinese Community Center. She has previously served on the boards of SpringSpirit Baseball, the Bo & Stacey Porter Self Foundation, the YWCA, Houston Ballet, and The Bayou City Medical Center.

Chow grew up in Northern California with her brother, the children of Chinese immigrants. Her mother, Helen Chow, went from stay-at-home parent to entrepreneur, founding her own real estate company and earning recognition as an “Influential Woman.”

Shern-Min Chow is married to her college sweetheart, and they are the proud parents of two sons, graduates of Rice University and MIT.

Johnathan Walton returns to KHOU 11 with new book

Johnathan Walton was a morning feature reporter for KHOU 11 in Houston during the first decade of the 2000s. Before his time in Houston, he worked at KABB in San Antonio on the segment "Walton's Window."

After leaving Houston, Walton moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in comedy, which eventually led to opportunities in television production. But the transition wasn’t easy.

"The mentality here is: If you don’t work in LA, you must not know anything," Walton told mikemcguff.com in 2009. "So even though I had 8 years of TV producing experience working at KHOU, KABB and WSVN, it meant nothing to the production companies here. So I had to start at the bottom as a PA… along with all the college kids. Luckily I was able to move up pretty quickly because I had one major advantage over all the college kids: 8 years of TV producing experience at KHOU, KABB and WSVN."

In 2021, Walton launched the iHeartMedia podcast “Queen of the Con: The Irish Heiress,” which chronicled his real-life experience of being scammed out of $100,000.

The podcast’s success led to the release of his book, “Anatomy of a Con Artist: The 14 Red Flags to Spot Scammers, Grifters, and Thieves,” published in August 2025.

Forget features...Walton should be a consumer reporter now!

The book’s release brought Walton back to his broadcasting roots, reuniting him with former Channel 11 morning anchor colleague Deborah Duncan on Great Day Houston (with a surprise appearance by Ron Treviño). He also returned to his San Antonio ties with an appearance on News 4 WOAI, KABB’s sister station, along with numerous other media outlets nationwide.

Brandi Smith joins Houston Moms, talks leaving TV

When Brandi Smith left KHOU 11 Houston at the end of 2023, she thought she had made a "terrible mistake."  It turns out she was just moving on to the next exciting chapter of her life.

After being hired at Channel 11 in 2017, Smith was immediately thrust into a viral storm after Hurricane Harvey's destruction of the KHOU studios, followed by a promotion to weekend morning anchor and then to the pioneering position of digital anchor.

Now working at Rice University for the last few years, Smith tells us about embarking on another career phase as she becomes co-owner of Houston Moms still putting those TV news skills to good use.

- Deborah Duncan talks TV and motherhood
- Danielle Grossman, from KPRC 2 to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
- Rashi Vats talks TV and parenting
- Lauren Freeman on raising 5 boys

Mike McGuff:  Have you missed local TV news since leaving KHOU?

Brandi Smith: The first three or so months after I left KHOU 11, I worried I had made a terrible mistake by leaving and joining Rice News, the news arm of Rice University. I missed the adrenaline that comes with breaking news and chasing down stories for a "win." But then it sort of hit me that every story I get to do at Rice is a win. I get to share stories about students and faculty who are making a huge impact in Houston and beyond. They're professors like Benjamin Kamins who worked on developing a more affordable bassoon so more kids can access classical music. And students like Maya Harpavat who blended her English and health sciences majors and created writing workshops to teach cancer patients and their caretakers how to journal as an outlet. I've also recently taken on responsibilities with Rice Global, which has meant more travel to Rice's campus in Paris (the Rice Global Paris Center), India (Rice has established an office in Bangalore) and Venice, where Rice has joined the esteemed consortium Venice International University.

What I found I missed was the direct connection I had with viewers. That still exists on social media, but it just felt like I didn't have as much to share or discuss when I wasn't posting the news of the day. Last fall, my friend Meagan Clanahan approached me about producing some videos for Houston Moms and I was excited to tap into that side of things again. Those conversations just kind of evolved and we started talking about me joining HM as an owner, which was a really exciting prospect for me.

How are you using your TV career skills with Houston Moms?

Brandi: I think the simplest answer here is my video production skills. Houston Moms already has a team of extremely talented writers and some of them are also strong on social media. But let's be real, with apps like TikTok, Instagram and even Facebook now pushing videos more than static posts, one of the things I've been tasked with is creating videos that get the word out about the incredible content our contributors are creating.

As a mother yourself, what experiences do you hope to bring to your readers?

Brandi: I'm further along in my mom journey than a lot of our other contributors since my youngest is about to start her freshman year in college. I shared about that in one of my first articles for HM. But I still remember the challenges and celebrations, the tough talks, the ongoing battles. I can tap into all of that when the time is right. I mean, shoot, I just updated our list of family-friendly breweries, which anyone who follows me will know is right up my alley!

What is your advice for those still in TV news who are looking to use their skills and transition out of the media biz?

Brandi: We need journalists. I want to be clear about that. I don't want to discourage anyone from staying in an industry they love and have a passion for. But that industry has flaws: journalists are undervalued, underpaid and overworked --- so burnout can come on fast. So my advice for someone who is considering transitioning out of a traditional newsroom would be to consider all the incredible skills they've developed that are valuable anywhere: clear, concise communication; research and fact-checking; time management; working under pressure; interviewing and listening; adaptability; critical thinking and analysis; video and audio production; digital and social media fluency; problem-solving --- and that's just off the top of my head! In the past few years, organizations of all sizes have really started to understand and appreciate what someone with a newsroom background can bring into almost any environment.

- Yes, Justin Stapleton and Brandi are a couple

Is there anything else you'd like to mention?

Brandi: I truly never thought I would leave a traditional newsroom. I started in one at 19 as a multimedia journalist at my hometown TV station and I would have stayed in my role at KHOU 11 if management there had treated its people better. When Rice offered me the job, I was so conflicted because we're talking about Rice (!!), one of the best universities in the entire country! But I loved what I did at KHOU 11. I had so many discussions with my family about it and I was confused about why it was so clear to them that Rice was the right choice. But they'd watched me through 22 years of this journalism career --- moving every couple of years, scraping to get by, working long hours --- and, though they knew how passionate I was about it, they wanted me to have a position where I would be fulfilled but also appreciated. Almost two years later, I can say they were completely right.

Danielle Grossman, from KPRC 2 to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Danielle Grossman, whom you may remember from KPRC 2 Houston, is interviewed by Brandi Smith for Houston Moms about her post-TV job as Director of Strategic Communications at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

"I loved chatting with Danielle and learning all about what she does to balance work and family, plus some of the things she does to keep herself happy and healthy," Smith told mikemcguff.com.

Grossman discusses her transition from TV news to her current role and the challenges of balancing motherhood with her demanding job.

You learn something new every day.  Grossman says during the rodeo season, she moves into a hotel near NRG Stadium!

She also reflects on how motherhood has shifted her priorities, making her value family time more and the importance of self-care and maintaining her identity outside of being a mom.

In a time when all we are hearing about is media layoffs, there is a bright spot to talk about and that relates to the High Tech Texan Michael Garfield adding Austin as one of his weekly TV appearances on FOX 7 KTBC with Dave Froehlich and Katie Orth.

Here is what Garfield posted on LinkedIn:

"Excited and honored to add another TV station to my content contribution list. I recently began my weekly tech segment on FOX7 (KTBC) morning show "Good Day Austin" in the technology hotbed of Austin, Texas.

This one hits home as I graduated with a Communications/Radio-TV-Film major at the University of Texas, just about one mile up the street from this heritage station.

I look forward to sharing product reviews, news, events and more in the capital city of Texas, in addition to my reports on KHOU (CBS) in Houston, and my long-running radio show in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.

"The High-Tech Texan" brand continues to expand and I thank you for listening, watching, and taking my advice."

Houston TV viewers can catch him on KHOU 11 as a live field correspondent with Deborah Duncan on "Great Day Houston."

AM listeners can hear him on his long-running 950 KPRC Houston radio and his recent Texas radio expansion to Talk Radio 1190 KFXR Dallas and News Radio 1200 WOAI San Antonio.

Garf will be a busy media dude as he gains more outlets for his tech and lifestyle product news and reviews. As an influencer, he also keeps his nearly 50,000 Instagram followers entertained.

Layoff leads to TV news gift line

Over the last eight years, when I needed to know something about KENS 5 San Antonio, I contacted its Director of Marketing, Don Smith.

Unfortunately, Smith was caught up in the recent TEGNA layoffs. Now, he's using his marketing magic and his love of television to create humorous and industry-specific gifts for TV news professionals.

SMTWF.etsy.com

"I wanted to design fun, tongue-in-cheek gift items that speak directly to the local TV news community," said Smith. "With so many people leaving the industry these days, I also created some lighthearted farewell gifts for journalists moving on to new adventures."

In his new online shop, "Spending More Time with Family," you know the line many TV pros use when they unexpectedly exit the industry, television newsers can buy a range of T-shirts, mugs, and candles with witty messages that resonate with those in the industry.

Popular designs include:

• "I’m Not Bossy. I’m a Producer."

• "Former Reporter... Storyteller Forever."

• "I’ll Eat Anything Sent to the Newsroom."

• "Super Producer."

• "Ratings Don’t Rule Me Anymore!"

Smith brings decades of experience to this creative endeavor, having done marketing for stations across the country, including KHOU in Houston, WESH in Orlando, KOVR/KMAX in Sacramento, and KENS in San Antonio.

His work has earned three Emmy Awards, multiple Promax Awards, Addy Awards, and other industry honors.

As a TV news geek myself, I wanted to glean insights from Smith's 34 years in the TV biz.

Don Smith

Mike McGuff: So, where did you get the idea for your new venture, "Spending More Time with Family?"

Don Smith: With time on my hands, I decided to start learning Canva and eventually, Printify and Etsy.  This gave me the opportunity to use my creative side while learning new skills and starting a business.

MM: Tell us about some of the designs geared to TV newsers...

DS: In my career, I've worked alongside so many great journalists, editors, directors, marketing teams and more.  I decided to make them my target audience.  I'm designing products for this large yet niche market. I didn't see many products out there that felt like they were made for me, so I just started designing! I also recognize many people are leaving the business and wanted to have great going away gifts for them as well.

So far, my top sellers have been a tongue-in-cheek shirt that says "I worked in local TV (before it started to suck)" and my personal favorite, a t-shirt featuring every news promo cliche imaginable in one, long run-on sentence topical promo script.  I have t-shirts, mugs, candles and a TV color bar blanket - hopefully something for everyone.

MM: Talk about some of the work you are most proud of from your time at KENS 5 San Antonio?

DS: At KENS, I was proud of the brand we created for the station in 2023, "San Antonio's Own."  It resonated with the audience in ways I didn't expect, and our station saw tremendous growth over the last two years.  Our creative team was fantastic and worked hard to make the brand messaging as authentic as possible.  That was the real difference - it came from the heart and viewers could feel it.  In 2024, we were awarded a Lone Star Emmy Award for one of our campaigns.

MM: You worked at KHOU 11 Houston at a time in the early 2000s when the station was really challenging ABC13 KTRK in the ratings.  What was the mood inside the Channel 11 studios at that point and what were some of the things you and the station were doing at the time that drove these results?

DS: I was working at KHOU as a promotions producer when we went from third to first place in the early 2000s.  I remember the newspaper always wrote an article about how KTRK had won sweeps, again.  Once, they wrote "There are three things you can count on.  Death, taxes and that KTRK will be number one."  I hung the articles up in my cubicle with the mission to make them change that article.  They eventually did.  The headline was "There's a New News Leader in Town."  I played a small role, but it was exciting to be part of something once thought impossible.  Our investigative team was fantastic, our morning show was anchored by Deborah [Duncan] and Ron [Treviño] and we had Greg [Hurst] and Lisa [Foronda] at night. A great setup for success.

MM: What is something you worked on that you are the most proud of during your TV career?

DS: One of my favorite memories was promoting the Super Bowl in Houston, which was being aired on KHOU.  We did high-end image spots with a fun jingle and a countdown campaign featuring celebrities from all across Houston.  My favorite was former President HW Bush, who was kind enough to take part.  He and Barbara were both very friendly and it was a great honor having an ex-President read my words!

MM: Anything else you want to add?

DS: I've been lucky enough to have worked with some of the best creatives in the country.  Together, we won awards, drove ratings and had a ton of fun doing it.  That's the part of the job I miss most - the people.

Michael Garfield fills-in on TV and national radio

With the holidays upon us, like the promised cooler weather, we see many Texas media fill-ins and changes.

For example, Daniella Guzman is on the KPRC 2 morning newscasts this week. Ken Slama fills in at KSAT 12 San Antonio for this month.

And Tessa Barrera leaves 94.5 The Buzz to focus on her television gig with KPRC 2's "Houston Life."

A combination of these two stories is how now syndicated "High Tech Texan" radio host Michael Garfield filled-in Tuesday for Deborah Duncan on "HL" competitor KHOU 11's "Great Day Houston."

This weekend, Garf has to pre-tape his usual 950 KPRC show to fill in for IHeartMedia sister station 740 KTRH simultaneously on the nationally syndicated The CarPro Radio Show with Jerry Reynolds.

Michael Garfield syndicates "High Tech Texan" show around Texas

Michael Garfield

Michael Garfield was an influencer before the word was connected to online dancing and "get ready with me" moments.

"I had to do it the old-fashioned way," Garfield told mikemcguff.com. "I had to shake hands, knock on doors, and promote myself way before social media."

All that work is paying off as the broadcaster connected to the "High Tech Texan" brand is expanding his weekend 950 KPRC Houston show to Talk Radio 1190 KFXR Dallas and News Radio 1200 WOAI San Antonio (already airing in the Alamo City, hitting DFW airwaves this weekend).

With the syndicated radio show heading to other big-market Texas stations, Garfield's iHeartMedia boss, Bryan Erickson, told him, "It's a good thing you didn't call yourself the High Tech Houstonian."

That name never materialized because Garfield, AKA Garf to his fans, has been a statewide presence for many years, going back to where many people first heard of him, as the voice and face for then Time Warner Cable's "Road Runner" high-speed internet service. He would later contribute to WFAA 8 DFW.

Garfield's "High Tech Texan" branding moved from ad campaigns to the radio for the then eight Clear Channel Houston stations, including his now decades-running show on 950 KPRC.

In fact, at 23 years running, Garf's radio show is the longest-running local radio show in the history of the 100-year-old KPRC-AM. That gives Garf the second-longest tenure at the now-named iHeartMedia Houston radio stations, only behind Sunny 99.1 KODA morning host Dana Tyson.

Now that the long-lasting local show is going to North and South Texas, Garfield will introduce himself to the new listeners so they know he is beyond a potentially boring tech show about fixing computers.

"That's the last thing I will do or I have ever done," Garfield explained.  "It's more about consumer lifestyle and products. I actually talk more about car and truck test drives and new recommendations than I talk about computers and laptops."

He certainly has the scoop on new auto releases. As a Texas Auto Writers Association member, Garfield no longer uses his personal car. A new one is delivered to his house every week for review. He estimates that in the past 15 years, he has test-driven more than 800 cars.

Beyond cars, Garfield delves into fashion trends and pop culture, all with a sense of humor.

"I answer many questions that people have before they go out and make purchases, large purchases, expensive purchases," Garfield told me.  "But if you don't entertain them, I don't think a lot of people continue to tune in."

Even though he now joins the ranks of syndicated Houston radio show hosts such as Michael Berry and Jesse Kelly, Garfield avoids political talk.

"I do not engage in politics, but I, without a doubt, have my opinions, and I've probably ticked off a lot of Aggies over the years with my love for the Texas Longhorns," said Garfield, who attended the 2024 SEC Championship in a decked out University of Texas themed private jet.  "That's about as controversial as I'll get."

While his radio career has steadily beamed through the airwaves, Garfield is also ready to supercharge his television resume.

"I started on TV," Garf said. "My first job was on QVC. I was the youngest show host ever to be on QVC at 24 years old. To be on national TV, you had to learn how to talk to viewers, position, and sell products."

The QVC experience landed Garfield on KPRC 2 Houston mornings in the early 2000s before radio and the Road Runner ads

Now, you can find him down the dial at KHOU 11 as a live field correspondent with Deborah Duncan on "Great Day Houston." He will also fill in as the "Great Day" host one day next week while Duncan taking time off.

"TV has always been a goal, it's always been a dream," Garf admitted.  "I love doing it and I hope I can continue to do it before I get wrinkly and gray."

Not that Benjamin Button, like Garfield, has to worry about aging quickly with his daily workouts and the great head of hair he says he inherited from his mother.
