Oscar Adame announces KRGV 5 retirement

Oscar Adame announced on the 6pm newscast that he is retiring from Channel 5 News KRGV Rio Grande Valley in late May 2022. Rudy Mireles took over as KRGV anchor.
"When I began my news career here at KRGV TV 23 years ago, it was a leap of faith. But it had been a dream of mine for many years to be part of the Channel 5 News team. Dream fulfilled and more.
I can't express enough what it's been an honor to report and bring you the news of the day for all these years.
I couldn't imagine ending my career at a better place. Channel five and my home...the Rio Grande Valley. And with that, I announced my retirement.
I'll still be here for another few weeks. There's still some work to do. And I thought I would go quietly, but some of my co-workers have other plans, and you'll hear more about that in the days ahead."
Co-anchor Dina Herrera-Garza added, "Of course, we have other plans for you. You know, we wish you all the best. You're going to be so missed. It's been such a privilege. But I'm just glad to hear that you're here for a few more weeks."
The 5, 6 and 10pm evening anchor joined KRGV in 1999.
Before that, Adame worked as a mid-day personality for KRGV Radio.
The Valley native graduated from the University of Texas-Pan American and began his radio career in 1977.
Adame will have more time to spend with his grandchildren. Granddaughter Madeline and grandson Cooper were born in 2021.
After 20+ years behind the anchor desk, our Oscar Adame has announced he will retire later this month. We have plans to celebrate Oscar’s career leading up to his final broadcast so stay tuned! For now, let’s all wish him the best on his next chapter. pic.twitter.com/NFr1hL9jsM

Alan Shoemaker is joining the abc13 KTRK Houston weather department from KRGV Channel 5 News in the Rio Grande Valley.
UPDATE MAY 2024

UPDATE APRIL 2023
Rachel Briers returns to abc13 KTRK after maternity leave
It was a tearful goodbye for the meteorologist who said on the noon newscast that he was leaving for a "potentially temporary job" in Houston TV after 17 years in the Valley (WATCH BELOW).
That "temporary job" will most likely be Shoemaker filling in for meteorologist Rachel Briers who will be going on maternity leave in January 2023.
Turns out Houston is a return city for Shoemaker who received cancer treatment for a battle with acute myeloid leukemia at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
KRGV chief meteorologist Tim Smith and other friends organized "Al’s Pals" to help Shoemaker with the cost of treatment. At the time, Smith said Shoemaker was, “probably the funniest guy he’s ever met.” Shoemaker used that humor when he wore Mardi Gras beads during his first round of chemo reported Daniel A. Flores of The Monitor.
Shoemaker was able to ring the bell in the KRGV newsroom after his final chemotherapy session in August 2018.
Best news of the day?

The Mississippi State University grad and Ball State University master's degree earner joined KRGV in August 2005. He previously forecasted the weather for WKOW 27 News Madison, WI and NBC Montana KECI Missoula, MT. He got his TV start at WTVA 9 News Tupelo, MS. According to Shoemaker's KRGV bio, that Tupelo job paid $5 an hour and was a 70 mile commute each way for him.

Rudy Mireles leaves KRGV 5

Rudy Mireles announced he is leaving his Channel 5 News KRGV Rio Grande Valley.
UPDATE 2025
Rudy Mireles joins ValleyCentral+ as digital anchor
Here is a portion of what Mireles posted on Facebook:
"Today, at my request, KRGV and I have mutually agreed to part ways, concluding my time with the station. While this decision follows some incredibly difficult conversations spanning several years, I am saddened that my journey with KRGV has to end this way. However, I want to focus on the immense gratitude I feel for the opportunity to serve this incredible community over the years.
As I look ahead to the next chapter of my career, I want to express my heartfelt thanks for the trust and support you’ve shown me. It has been an honor to tell your stories and stand with you through some of the most pivotal moments in our region’s history."
In May 2022, Mireles became the KRGV evening anchor after Oscar Adame retired.
Mireles joined KRGV as a reporter in March 2020.
Prior to that, he was the morning news anchor for News Radio 1370 WSPD in Toledo, Ohio.
Before transitioning to journalism, Mireless spent eight years in the U.S. Air Force and two years in the Air National Guard. Noticias RGV ends operations on KRGV 5
Noticias RGV, the KRGV 5 Spanish-language news brand, ended operations on July 31, 2025.
UPDATE
MYSA reports that KRGV news director Zoltan Csanyi-Salcedo is no longer with the station.
While there is no official word on what happens to the staff, a source tells me that they were offered buyouts with a chance to fill other open positions at Channel 5 News.
"Our goal over this past decade has been to provide our audience with local news they can trust — in the language they prefer," said KRGV General Manager John Kittleman. "I'm incredibly proud of every team member, past and present, who helped bring Spanish-language news to our community. We also thank our advertising partners and — most of all — our viewers. Unfortunately, in the end, the audience just wasn't large enough to sustain these efforts on a full-time basis."
In 2015, KRGV launched Secondary Audio Program (SAP) services providing real-time Spanish translations of Channel 5 newscasts.
Somos Noticias debuted on subchannel 5.2 in 2019, offering four live daily one-hour newscasts.
In 2020, KRGV partnered with Azteca America (which shut down in 2022) to launch Hechos Valle.
Through a partnership with Novelisima, the Spanish-language news offerings were rebranded to Noticias RGV in 2023.

Bill Barajas joins KSAT from KRGV
![]() |
Bill Barajas |
For the last three years, the younger Barajas has been working as a reporter at KRGV in the Rio Grande Valley. But starting Monday, August 12th, Bill moves up to KSAT, San Antonio's top rated station.
"KRGV was my first job and an experience I'll never forget," Bill Barajas told mikemcguff.com. "I covered everything from cartels to human and drug stash houses. My move to KSAT was made possible with the experience and hard work I put in there and the guidance of my father and cousin Erik.
"Erik worked at KSAT before moving up to KTRK. He always talked about the first rate station that they run there and I couldn't be more excited."
Naturally Bill's dad, Mike, is very excited.
"Bill is a graduate of the University of Houston just like his old man and he is following in the broadcasting footsteps," the elder Barajas told mikemcguff.com. "After completing his 3-year stint in South Texas he is moving to the number one station in San Antonio."
According to his bio, Bill interned at four different stations in Houston - Fox 26 KRIV, abc13 KTRK, Telemundo, and KIAH CW39. I personally remember seeing him intern when I was at KTRK.
I've said it before, long live the Barajas TV dynasty! And you would have known about this move weeks ago if you had followed me on Facebook. I posted it there first!

John Paul Barajas joins KSAT
John Paul Barajas is leaving KRGV 5 Rio Grande Valley as an anchor/reporter to be a general assignments reporter for KSAT 12 San Antonio starting June 26th mikemcguff.com can confirm.
Television viewers in both San Antonio and Houston will recognize the famous Barajas TV news name.
John Paul is the son of former Fox 26 KRIV anchor Mike Barajas. He is also the younger brother of current KPRC reporter (and former KSAT 12/KRGV reporter) Bill Barajas.
He is also the cousin of abc13 KTRK anchor Erik Barajas.
"Erik worked at KSAT before moving up to KTRK," Bill Barajas told mikemcguff.com in 2013. "He always talked about the first rate station that they run there."
John Paul has been with KRGV since 2017.
He is a graduate of the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston.
According to his bio, Barajas wears red ties on most Fridays in honor of the Cougar Red Friday’s tradition.
While in school he participated in UH's Coog TV. He also interned in Houston at abc13 KTRK, FOX 26 KRIV and in San Antonio at KSAT 12.
So after KSAT, any guesses on which Houston TV station John Paul will join in the future? I joked in the past, it has to be KHOU 11, so the Barajas television dynasty can add another station to their list!

Gloria Walker joins KRGV 5 Rio Grande Valley
Gloria Walker signed off 12News KBMT Beaumont as a reporter/fill-in anchor on April 5, 2024, and announced on May 16th that she is joining KRGV 5 Rio Grande Valley.
"Even though I shed lots of tears yesterday, I am so proud of all my progress," Walker posted on Instagram. "I am thankful for all the wonderful journalists whose paths I have crossed with. And I have a feeling this is just the beginning."
Walker joined the 12News team in November 2021.
The University of Houston grad, who was also raised in Houston, previously worked with the Astros as an "Astros Pre-Game Show" host. She also worked in promotions for 104.1 KRBE.

Allysa Cole joins KSAT San Antonio
Allysa Cole is joining KSAT 12 San Antonio as a reporter in September 2022.
Cole comes from KRGV 5 Rio Grande Valley where she was a weekend anchor/reporter for two years.
Before that, she worked for CBS 4 KGBT as a multi-media journalist (MMJ) in the same area.
Prior to Texas, Cole worked as an MMJ for FOX 23 WHPM Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Cole, who was also a member of AmeriCorps, started her TV career at WDAM 7 as a digital content producer while attending the University of Southern Mississippi where she earned a BA in journalism and Spanish.
The Detroit native used that college Spanish literature concentration to report for KRGV’s sister station Azteca Valle “Hechos Valle.”

Bill Barajas joins KPRC 2
KSAT 12 San Antonio's Bill Barajas is joining Houston sister-station KPRC the anchor/reporter posted on Facebook. From what I hear he will be a reporter at KPRC.
"In what might be the worst kept secret I’m happy to announce that after almost 9 years I’m going HOME," Barajas wrote over the weekend. "I have accepted a job a KPRC Channel 2 in Houston. I have one week left at KSAT and while I’m beyond excited to start the new gig I will forever love SA and the friends/co-workers that have become like a family to me."
Now, you might say Barajas...that name sounds familiar to me. There is a reason for that.
You can go read my 2010 post TV anchors named Barajas taking over Houston and Texas to get the full picture. I even wrote, "It's a Barajas TV news world in Houston - you and I just happen to watch it." Then in my more fun loving days, I listed six things that Barajas anchors could do if they worked at every Houston TV station. Go ahead and read it. I'll wait here for you to finish and then we can continue together.
I've been covering Bill Barajas since he was a reporter for KRGV 5 in the Rio Grande Valley. The reason...he is the son of former FOX 26 KRIV anchor Mike Barajas.
"Bill is a graduate of the University of Houston just like his old man and he is following in the broadcasting footsteps," Mike Barajas told mikemcguff.com back in 2013 when Bill Barajas started at KSAT 12.
You may also know his cousin, Erik Barajas, who anchors for abc13 KTRK.
"Erik worked at KSAT before moving up to KTRK," Bill Barajas told mikemcguff.com in 2013. "He always talked about the first rate station that they run there."
In reality, the Barajas clan is now playing catch up in the Houston television news family dynasty world.
While Erik and Bill are now working for KTRK and KPRC respectively, both of those stations also employ Rascons!
Yes, longtime abc13 KTRK anchor Art Rascon's son, Jacob, joined KPRC from NBC News just a few years ago.
Maybe John Paul Barajas, Mike's other son, can go work at KHOU one day just so the family can claim another station in its dynasty! John Paul has been with KRGV 5 since 2017.
(Thanks Taylor!)
