VIDEO: KHOU 11 anchor Lucy Noland says goodbye to Houston

With today's shocking news that 740 KTRH replaced Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard with Matt Patrick; KTRH is now NewsTalk 740, it's time for some Houston TV viewers to get even more depressed.

Last week we learned that KHOU 11 anchor Lucy Noland will be anchor/reporter at LA's KNBC 4. And just a few days ago, KHOU.com posted video of her official sign off from the newscast. Grab a tissue...you might need it. (WATCH ABOVE)

At least KHOU allowed Noland the opportunity to say goodbye. For most stations...she would end her final newscast and the day after it would be like "Lucy Noland who? Never heard of her."

740 KTRH replaces Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard; KTRH is now NewsTalk 740

UPDATE
Houston getting News 92 FM KROI - 24 hour radio news with Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard

Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard are out of 740 KTRH after 27 years. And now the station drops the news front and goes with the talk moniker.

"This is an exciting time for our station," Clear Channel Houston AM Operations Manager Bryan Erickson said in a statement. "Like other forms of media, we have to continue to adapt. We have to serve our listeners by being informative and entertaining. Lana and JP are an institution in Houston, they are true professionals, and we, along with our listeners, will miss hearing their comforting voices every morning. We know our new show has big shoes to fill."

With a change in the morning show comes a change in direction for KTRH. No more NewsRadio 740 KTRH branding. Now the station is called NewsTalk 740. That's because the days of this station being a news station have been fading quickly over the last years. Clearly it is a conservative talk station now with no apologies. History buffs will note that KTRH used to be a talk station in the early 80s too. KTRK 13 investigative reporter Wayne Dolcefino had a talk show on it.

Well we should have seen this coming. Just last week I linked to the Denver Post article stating that Lois Melkonian was on her way to Houston. Melkonian was just a talk show host at Denver Clear Channel station KOA (KTRH is a Clear Channel station). While she just did talk, Melkonian does have news experience having worked at KCBS radio and KGO-TV in San Francisco as an anchor/reporter.

But the star of the new show according to the Clear Channel press release is Matt Patrick. In fact the show that debuts July 5th (5 to 9am) is actually called “Houston’s Morning News with Matt Patrick.”

In fact here is video of Matt Patrick taking Texas to task from his website:

According to a station release, Patrick has been splitting time between Indiana (95.3 MNC, Michiana) and Ohio (WTAM, Cleveland and WLW, Cincinnati) and will be moving to Houston, along with his wife and three children. mattpatrickshows.com

The station adds the rest of the show lineup remains the same. I assume there will still be news updates at top and bottom of the hour too.

Now back to Lana and JP. I posted how both legendary news anchors were inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2009. Just two years ago, KTRH sent me this release about the radio duo:

Through it all, “Lana and JP” have been the staple of the morning radio landscape in Houston. They are currently enjoying very high ratings, as good as ever. “Lana and JP are as good as they’ve ever been, and they get better every day,” said Houston market manager Eddie Martiny. “They’re just now starting to hit their stride. We think they have at least 25 more great years to inform and entertain Houstonians.”

Damn how things change quickly in broadcasting. Readers have already written me expressing anger over this KTRH change, especially since it is the third major shift in Houston radio in just a month (SEE 106.9 The Zone and Kidd Kraddick replaces Maria Todd mornings on Mix 96.5 KHMX).

No doubt, JP and Lana have been the first voices many Houstonians have heard in the morning for many, many years. That puts them in a special place for many listeners. They sounded great and had tremendous chemistry together. They did what they could over the last few years with the dwindling resources they were given as a result of cutbacks.

Think about it, a decade ago, Lana and JP has a huge news staff behind them on the streets and freeways (traffic) telling Houston what was happening with news and traffic. Trust me when I say that KTRH was pre-set number one on the car radios of the other journalists in town. That clearly changed over the last decade as more and more news blocks disappeared in favor of syndicated talk shows. This reminds us that broadcasting is a business about money and not news coverage. These talks shows do after all get ratings or they would not be there.

But out of respect for these two broadcasting giants, here are Lana and JP's bios:

A native Houstonian, Lana Hughes is a graduate of Conroe High School and has a B.A. in English and journalism/communications from Baylor University. Her career began as a newspaper reporter at the Daily Courier in Conroe, before going into broadcasting at Conroe's KIKR. She first joined KTRH as weekend anchor and field reporter, before teaming up with JP Pritchard on the KTRH Morning News.
Lana's lifelong passions are writing and animals! Her love of both come together in her blog, Animal House. Her pet page showcases the efforts of area rescue groups and shelters to help those with no voice, and is dedicated to providing news and information to help stop the needless suffering of abused, neglected and abandoned animals.

JP Pritchard has been anchoring at NewsRadio 740 KTRH since 1982, and with Lana Hughes as his on-air partner since 1984. JP received a degree in journalism from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. After doing stints as reporter/anchor and news director at radio stations in the midwest, he was recruited to be news director at KULF Radio, now KBME SportsTalk 790. He and Lana have won many awards honoring their work as writers, anchors and interviewers. And JP and Lana have won the "Best Anchor Team" and "Best Newscast" awards several times from the Texas AP Broadcasters. In 2000, JP won the "Best Documentary" award for a two-hour production on the history of Houston. He and his wife, Esther, and have three grown sons and two grandsons.

VIDEO: Flash mob hitting Houston's west side Thursday night

HairsprayIf you are at Memorial City Mall or the City Center in the Houston-area Thursday night and see around 100 people dancing to the song "You Can't Stop the Beat," don't worry, it's just a flash mob.

Turns out the Country Playhouse has more than 100 volunteers from the community participating in this 'impromptu' event to promote Hairspray, which just so happens to be the next production at the Country Playhouse.

I'm told the flash mob will perform three times. Twice Thursday night: 7pm at Memorial City Mall (near the skating rink) and 8pm at City Center (on the green, in the front of Yardhouse and Ruggles). The third time will be on stage at the Country Playhouse before the production of Hairspray on July 15th.

KHOU 11 reporter caught smoking at start of oil fire live shot

UPDATE at bottom with official Brad Woodard apology.

Readers have been asking me to find the video of a KHOU 11 reporter smoking during one of Friday's 5pm newscast live shots. Since I am lazy, luckily a kind reader helped me out and sent the link featured on YouTube.

Turns out it is KHOU 11 reporter Brad Woodward Woodard. Ironically he is reporting from an oil fire in Chambers County. Greg Hurst and Lucy Noland toss to Woodward Woodard who takes a puff from the cigarette, drops the cigarette, looks up and asks the photographer "Ready?," pauses a moment and begins the live shot.

This falls into the category of reporters are people too. They make mistakes sometimes in an incredibly stressful job.

By the way, KHOU 11 reports that fire was eventually extinguished.

UPDATE
I have to apologize to Brad Woodard for getting his name incorrect. In the rush to get this online for my readers, I referred to him as Woodward. This video has gone viral all over the nation now, but I believe I was one of the first to have it for my readers.

Also, an anonymous reader has sent in a link to the official KHOU 11 Facebook account which offers an apology from Mr. Woodard. Here it is:

From KHOU 11 News Brad Woodard:

Dear Viewers,

Some of you have raised concerns about my live report from Chambers County on Friday, June 24th. Due to a technical glitch, I was observed on camera smoking and extinguishing a cigarette, something I find both professionally and personally embarrassing. I was reporting from the scene of a fire at an abandoned “tank farm” formerly used to store petroleum products. The fire was well under control at the time of my report, and I was standing on concrete when I discarded my cigarette. I also made sure it was extinguished following my brief report.

Apparently, some of you are under the impression I was reporting from the scene of a wild fire. That was not the case. My bad habit aside, I’m very cognizant of the extreme drought conditions facing this state. I report on those conditions daily and care very deeply about those affected. That said, I sincerely apologize to those of you who were offended. We appreciate…I appreciate your viewership and your concerns.

Regards,

Brad Woodard

KHOU 11's Lucy Noland headed to KNBC 4 LA

Even though I am at the beach today, I have to let you know that KHOU 11 anchor Lucy Noland is going to LA's KNBC 4 as an anchor and reporter.

Statement from Philip Bruce, KHOU 11 Executive News Director: “It’s always difficult to say goodbye to a member of the family. Sadly, that’s the chore ahead of us as our own Lucy Noland prepares to take on a great new opportunity in Los Angeles. Lucy has accepted an offer from KNBC-TV, a fine shop that I know well, where she’ll be anchoring and reporting. When she joins Channel 4 in Los Angeles in early July, Lucy will be surrounded by a top-notch newsroom and some great people."

Noland came to Houston from New York's WNYW in 2007.

According to KNBC, Noland starts July 11, so catch her in Houston while you can.

On a related note, former KPRC 2 meteorologist Byron Miranda just started at KNBC a few months ago.

KTRK 13 promotions producer Michael Penix leaves for WLTX 19 as creative services director

It's never fun to have to say goodbye to friends, but this is for a good reason.

KTRK 13 promotions producer Michael Penix (and mikemcguff blog guest contributor) has left Houston for Columbia, South Carolina as creative services director at WLTX 19 (at least there is a little Texas in those call letters), the CBS affiliate.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity and sad to leave channel 13 after 6.5 years," Penix told mikemcguff.com. "I made a lot of great friends and had excellent bosses in Scott Morrow and Tom Ash. They taught me a lot and I'm gonna use that knowledge in Columbia. I'll also miss my night side family...an awesome group that knows how to win".

And get this, the day after Penix left KTRK, he went straight to Las Vegas for his first WLTX assignment...the PromaxBDA convention. Talk about a great first day! His real first day at the Gannett owned station was this Monday.

City of Houston says cut down the yard watering

No surprise our drought situation has the city of Houston asking to cut back on the grass and yard watering:

Lack of rain and record high temperatures has made it necessary to institute the City's Stage One Water Conservation Measures, as outlined in Chapter 47 in the Code of Ordinances.

The City requests residents limit lawn watering to the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. and NO more than two days per week.

Residents are asked to abide by the following schedule:

Sundays and Thursdays for customers with even-numbered street addresses

Saturdays and Wednesdays for customers with odd-numbered street addresses

The City will also be contacting large commercial water customers to request voluntary reductions in water consumption.

As required by the ordinance, City departments are instituting a water use reduction program which includes but is not limited to:

Reducing water use by 10 percent Implementing corrective measures to eliminate water waste

KHOU 11 reporter Dave Fehling to leave station

KHOU 11 has confirmed to mikemcguff.com that longtime reporter Dave Fehling is moving on from the Belo owned station.

“For nearly 18 years Dave Fehling has been one of this station’s top 'go-to' reporters," Executive News Director Philip Bruce told mikemcguff.com in a statement. "Now, after doing a standout job for us for so many years, Dave wants to try something new."

According to his bio, Fehling has been with KHOU since 1989 except from 1994-1998 when he was a network correspondent for CBS News. He is also a lecturer at the University of Houston naturally teaching broadcast journalism courses.

Fehling is no stranger to this blog. Last year I blogged about his joining of the 11 News I-Team. Fehling and I also met while taping an episode of Houston 8 with Ernie Manouse on KUHT 8 in 2009 (Michael Garfield "The High Tech Texan" was also a guest with us).

For a guy who has 'done it all,' I found Fehling to be very down to earth and an overall nice guy.

"He has the talent and experience to do many more great things in whatever he wants to pursue," Bruce said.

So enjoy Fehling's reports while you can (I do not know an official quitting date). You can also keep up with him on his personal website davefehling.com.

106.9 The Zone gets zapped, will simulcast 107.5 The Eagle KGLK

It appears 106.9 FM is not in 'The Zone' anymore. My bad attempts at clever writing aside, it really appears KHPT 106.9 The Zone's days are numbered. That means Houston is down to two alternative music stations now (94.5 The Buzz KTBZ and 103.7 KHJK).

According to All Access, the station is going to simulcast sister Cox Radio station 107.5 The Eagle KGLK starting this Monday. In fact Wikipedia already lists this has happening on Monday, but in the past tense. The online encyclopedia also erased the KHPT page and re-directed it to KGLK. @serenasays pointed out on Twitter that "The Zone" Facebook page is gone, but I found the station's website and Twitter account still active.

Growing up in Houston, I remember both of the 106.9 and 107.5 frequencies being spotty in certain areas of town. This is why Clear Channel moved The Buzz from 107.5 to 94.5 more than a decade ago. The theory is, now Cox can take the Lake Jackson frequency 107.5 and combine it with the Conroe frequency 106.9 to make The Eagle have a larger, more reliable coverage area. Cox stole Dean and Rog from 93.7 The Arrow KKRW, so they want their morning team to have the best possible signal strength I am sure.

However, I'm not sure how Houston listeners will react to having one station on two frequencies. Heck, many are still recovering from Kidd Kraddick replacing Maria Todd and Brad Booker on Mix 96.5 KHMX!

Cox Radio did not give '106.9 The Zone' very long to succeed. The station only debuted in November 2010. It was always an alternative music format, but the format was tweaked over time. A hot programmer from Miami was even brought in to run the station. The one thing the station did not do is offer a specialty show to a popular Houston McBlogger that covers Houston media (that could have been the saving grace).

So there you have it, Houston loses an alternative station, but gains another classic rock station (sort of). I know a lot of Channel 39 photographers that will be upset.  So enjoy 106.9 The Zone all this weekend, because Monday...it's [zapped].

Houston gets Coke machine of the future

Coca-Cola Freestyle soda machine in HoustonI went into the Firehouse Subs at Houston's Meyerland Plaza a few weeks ago and saw the staff offering customers guidance on its new drink machine. I worried about society for a minute until I saw how advanced the machine was! The employee says this futuristic machine is one of six currently in the Houston-area.

Now being called The Ferrari of Coke machines, (because as the Firehouse Subs employee told me, the casing is actually made by Ferrari), the Coca-Cola Freestyle soda machine is catching on across the world supposedly.

The machine that lets you create more than a 100 different flavors is made to feel like you are getting your drink from an Apple product with its simple touch screen and dizzying area of features.  (the employee told me Apple was involved in the software running it but I have not confirmed that anywhere). It also promises a cleaner taste (read less plasticy).

Here is a description from a report in the Seattle's The Stranger:

The machine has a field of circular app-like buttons with Coca-Cola brand names on them: Diet Coke, Fanta, Vault, Dasani, Sprite. When you touch a logo, it brings you to a submenu with flavor options. Press "Coke," say, and you're delivered to a screen with a choice of regular, lime, orange, vanilla, and raspberry (I am assured by a PR person that raspberry Coke is very popular in Europe). Then you depress the huge "Pour" button to fill the cup as much as you like. You are encouraged to mix flavors, freestyle.

That's not all. You can also create your own flavor, use an app to store 'the recipe' in your iPhone, then use your phone to scan it back to the machine. That means you get the exact same mixture of drink and flavoring every time with the swipe of your phone. No more fumbling on the touch screen to get that perfect lime Diet Coke flavor as a sweaty guy behind you in line stares you down as he is jonsing for a caffeine fix (that guy could be me by the way).

As a Dr Pepper fan, I learned that I could not mix in any flavors.  That's because Dr Pepper is not an official Coke product and could not be altered like the other featured Coca Cola drinks.

This video gives you an idea of what you can do.

So will this catch on? Or is it too complicated for both the restaurant and the consumer? Only time and lots of carbonation will tell.

Texan views on legalization of marijuana, gambling, the White House and more

Want to know what a sample of your fellow Texans are thinking? Approximatley 700 of them were surveyed in the 5th Anniversary Texas Lyceum poll from May 24th through May31st (margin of error = +/-3.69%) on a variety of issues. Here is a summary of what they found on just some of the topics:

More support for full blown gambling
Last October when Texans were asked for their opinion on gambling, 29% of adult Texans said they would support full blown gambling while 21% would support expanding gambling and gaming. Seven months later it appears that opinion is shifting more in that direction, with 34% supporting full blown gambling and 25% favoring an expansion for a total of 59% of Texans in support of more growth in this industry.

Legalization of marijuana
On the topic of the legalization of marijuana, two-thirds of those surveyed oppose making marijuana legal. When a follow-up question pointed out the possible tax revenue benefits from legalization of marijuana, Texans were not swayed, and in fact, simply solidified their existing view.

Handguns on Campus
The ability to carry concealed handguns on campus is another hot-button issue for many Texans. A strong majority (74% of adult Texans; 67% of likely voters) opposes legislation that would allow individuals to carry concealed handguns on college campuses.

Politics
A recent Texas Lyceum poll finds that Governor Rick Perry gets a thumbs up from 54% of likely voters on his job performance in 2011 while President Barack Obama receives 51% approval overall. The state legislature registers just below Perry and Obama with 49% approval. Looking ahead to the 2012 Republican presidential primary, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin are at the forefront of a large pack of contenders. With most voters undecided at this point, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst leads the list of possible candidates for the Republican Senate primary while no Democratic Senate primary candidate garners more than 9%. Approximately 17% of likely voters call themselves members of the Tea Party.

Green energy good, but drill on in the Gulf
A large majority of Texans (83% of adult Texans; 81% of likely voters) support investing in green energy such as solar and wind. Their second most popular choice to meet our energy needs is drilling in the Gulf of Mexico (62% of adult Texans; 74% of likely voters). Interestingly, Texans seem to be split on drilling in the Alaskan Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (46% of adult Texans in favor of drilling; 58% of likely voters in favor of drilling).

See all of the results here on the The Texas Lyceum’s fifth anniversary Poll page.

Kidd Kraddick replaces Maria Todd mornings on Mix 96.5 KHMX

UPDATE JANUARY 07, 2014
Atom Smasher ready to shake things up at Mix 96.5 KHMX

UPDATE 7/27/2013
Radio's Kidd Kraddick has died

CBS Radio Houston announced today that Dallas-based syndicated morning show Kidd Kraddick in the Morning will take over the morning show slot from the legendary Maria Todd and co-host Brad Booker at Mix 96.5 KHMX this coming Monday, June 13.

Kidd Kraddick and crew will air from 5 to 9am.

“Mix 96-5 is a long-time Houston favorite radio brand and Kidd’s show is a perfect compliment," said Senior Vice President and Market Manager for CBS RADIO Houston, Brian Purdy. "It’s topical, fun and entertaining and we know our listeners are going to love it.”

I'm surprised Kidd Kraddick didn't show up in Houston earlier. Especially in the time period Mix 96.5 was owned by Clear Channel. Kidd's home station is Clear Channel owned 106.1 KISS FM KHKS.

“Houston has been at the top of our affiliate wish list for nearly ten years," Kraddick said. "We do really well in all of our Texas markets so it looks like a natural and logical next step. We’ve had opportunities in Houston in the past but the circumstances were never exactly right. We only want to be on if we can win, and with CBS as our partner for the first time, we think we have a chance to do well.”

As for Maria Todd, she will move to afternoon drive from 2 to 7pm on Mix 96.5.

“We are thrilled to have Maria continue to be part of the on-air line-up of Mix 96-5," said KHMX Program Director Tracy Austin. "She is a beloved Houston personality and it makes sense that she has her own show!”

Austin says Todd's show will be a mix of hit music, listener calls and her signature entertainment news. CBS did not say what will happen to co-host Booker.

Both Austin and Todd previously worked across the street at 104.1 KRBE.

Here is more about Kidd Kraddick:

With its ensemble cast, Kidd Kraddick in the Morning is known for being completely irreverent and hilarious in one moment, then profoundly touching the next. Kidd and his crew have been lauded for their commitment to charity with Kidd’s Kids - the show’s signature charitable cause which sends terminally and chronically ill children and their families to Walt Disney World each November. The show is heard in 85 markets across the country and Kraddick says his 86th affiliate will get lots of attention.

UPDATE
CBS Houston confirms to me that Brad Booker will no longer be with the station. That also includes former Mix 96.5 KHMX afternoon guy Dave Morales. Maria Todd takes his slot and CBS says Morales is gone too. Morales previously worked in Dallas at 106.1 KISS FM where Kraddick broadcasts from. He also has worked at Hot 95.7 KKHH and the now defunct 102.9 The Planet KKPN.

More anchor changes at KHOU 11

Lots of viewers are apparently excited about the return of KHOU 11 anchor Ron Trevino to the station's morning newscast.

Allison Triarsi
But that is not the only anchor change I have learned about at the CBS Houston affiliate. Saturday morning news anchor Allison Triarsi is returning to reporting full time.

"We are filling in Saturday mornings with various members of our staff," KHOU 11 Director of Programming and Marketing Lisa Trapani Shumate told mikemcguff.com.

So which KHOU 11 staffer could be the new anchor behind the anchor desk on Saturday mornings? I am hearing rumors on the street of possible candidates Jeremy Desel, Leigh Frillici and Courtney Zubowski. Stay tuned to find out who gets it.

You can pretend you are Cee Lo Green or Christina Aguiler judging the potential anchors just like they do singers on The Voice. Just turn your chair around towards your television set at the end of the newscast to show your approval.

Speaking of weekend news, I told you in the Ron Trevino post that former morning anchor Vicente Arenas was returning to weekends with Shern Min Chow. Shumate informs me his start date will be Sunday, June 12th. So watch for him then.

Speaking of changes at KHOU 11, I am still waiting to hear what the station is going to do in it's soon to be vacated Oprah Winfrey slot. My bet is still a 4pm newscast as in the reasons I gave last month.

KPRC 2 anchor Rachel McNeill delivers in hospital hallway

We've had a slight pause, but the KPRC 2 baby parade has continued. This time, anchor Rachel McNeill gave birth to her second child Monday reports click2houston.com:

Rachel and her husband, Wayne, welcomed a baby boy shortly before 4 a.m. Hudson Pierce Franklin weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces and was 19 inches long. Hudson was very excited to meet his new family. Not only was he a few weeks early, but he was born in a hallway at the hospital. He was due on June 30. Mom and dad said he is healthy and beautiful!

Congratulations to Rachel. Let's see...that means the list of expecting talent at KPRC is as follows:

Lauren Freeman (delivered)
Rachel McNeill (delivered)
Amy Davis
Courtney Zavala (delivered)
Daniella Guzman (expecting)

***UPDATE***I got a flood of notes saying that anchor Courtney Zavala did indeed deliver at the end of May. I apologize to Courtney and her family for missing this. Here is more from click2houston.com:

Courtney and her husband, Orlando, welcomed an 8-pound, 8-ounce boy about 8 p.m. They named him Andrew. It took Courtney and Orlando three days to name their first son, Connor, who was born in 2007.

Not mentioned in the original KPRC 2 baby wave coverage were expecting new fathers Anthony Yanez and Winston Dutchin.

Is Talk 650 KIKK-AM getting the format change axe?

Some of my readers are asking, what's going on at Talk 650 KIKK? That's a lot of buzz suddenly surrounding the 250 watt, daytime only, Houston AM radio station.

It all started when Talk650 Morning Show host Brent Clanton (FYI...father of KPRC 2 sports guy Adam Clanton for those who might be interested), announced on the air and online he was told by CBS (owner of 650 KIKK-AM) the station's format was changing. He also said his show will be on the air for a few more weeks:

In fact, as is usually the case in a Radio station format change, once the announcement is made, generally a day or so before execution of the switch, the air staff is summarily dismissed. We’re instead being given the grace period of 30-days to conclude our business with our sponsors and advertisers, and also the opportunity to thank you for your support and say our fare thee well’s. READ THE REST

Talk 650 KIKK control room shot
Brent Clanton and Steven Kay at Talk 650
As for CBS, if the media company is looking to switch Talk 650's format, it isn't ready to talk about it publicly yet.

"We’re always looking at ways to improve our stations," CBS Radio Houston Group Marketing Director Pam Kehoe told mikemcguff.com. "We don’t have changes to announce but will certainly let you know when we do."

One thing we do know...one longtime host is staying put on the 650am frequency. Cleverley Stone, host of The Cleverley Show, confirms she's not going anywhere.

"Yes, I will be on the air at 650," Stone told me. "I'll be live and local every Saturday from 12-2pm, just like I've been since January 2007 on CBS Radio Houston."

650 KIKK has been many formats over the years, just like many other Houston radio stations. Just off the top of my head, it's been  music, business talk, a format created just for Howard Stern, a CNN relay and now talk. I believe most shows follow the "brokered programming" model. That means the hosts sell their own advertising and pay the station to be on the air (anyone willing to sponsor me for a show?).

So what's next? Stay tuned.

KHOU 11 returns anchor Ron Trevino to morning newscast

Call out the helicopter, live trucks, email alerts...oh wait...I'm not a TV station...just a blog, but I do have breaking news!

A kind reader emailed me before 7am this morning saying promos were running on KHOU 11 heralding the return of none other than Ron Trevino to KHOU 11 News This Morning this Monday morning. You might remember Trevino used to anchor that very show with Debra Deborah Duncan a few years ago. This time around, Trevino will join Christine Haas, Katherine Whaley and David Paul (again).

"I'm really look forward to going back on the morning news," Trevino told mikemcguff.com. "It'll be a way to engage with our audience in a more personal way than a traditional newscast. And I specially love that part of it!"

After leaving the morning show, Trevino anchored channel 11's noon newscast and reported for the evening newscasts. That's a pretty good schedule. While a more high-profile gig, a morning anchor job has a much rougher hours.

"Waking up at 2:30 every morning to be at work so early? Well, I will have to get used to that all over again," Trevino told me. "I'm buying all new alarm clocks. You need several in case one breaks down or there's a power failure. It's like NASA...there has to be a backup to the backup. Failure to wakeup is NOT an option!"

When Trevino and Duncan sat at the morning anchor desk, KHOU 11's ratings in that time slot were quite formidable. Since both of their departures (Duncan went on to host Great Day Houston), the show has struggled to keep as many viewers. I always wondered if Trevino would make a return since he was waiting in the wings as they say. No doubt the name Ron Trevino has viewer recognition. According to Trevino's bio, "he is one of KHOU's award-winning journalists, bringing more than 30 years of television news experience to the anchor desk -- 25 of those years, right here at KHOU." That's impressive.

Trevino will be replacing Vicente Arenas who will return to his old schedule too. Arenas goes back to anchoring weekends with Shern-Min Chow.
