KTRK 13's 10pm news hijacked by technical problems

Photobucket

Wouldn't you know it...things break on holiday weekends. KTRK 13's usual Eyewitness News at 10pm was delayed a full hour Saturday night because of 'gremlins' in the equipment. Here is more from the KTRK 13 twitter account:

Wondering where the 10pm news is? We're experiencing technical difficulties. Stand by & we'll have the news up soon! Thx for your patience.

The anchors must have been waiting in the studio for a longtime for the problem to be fixed. At least according to a tweet from anchor Adela Uchida:

Tom and I are sitting in the studio, thinking we will be able to start the news at 11- just 6,7 minutes. Stay with us...

Forget the late news, the 'later' news finally came on around 11pm.

Hey guess what... THE NEWS IS ON!

TV stations having technical troubles is nothing new. I remember years ago when I worked at KTRK, the audio board went out right before the 10pm news. The production crew still got the news on anyway. A few months ago, KTRK didn't have any audio in its 4pm newscast for the first 20 minutes or so. That also happened to a 9pm newscast I served as a reporter on for KIAH 39.  At least in channel 13's case, the audience apparently noticed and sent warm wishes to the station on Facebook.

So what did KTRK run instead of the news while things were being repaired? Cold Case...which normally airs after the newscast on Saturday nights. Many Houston viewers probably wanted to call the HPD cold case unit when tuning in and not seeing anchors Tom Abrahams, Uchida, meteorologist David Tillman and sports anchor Tim Melton.

Glad to see @ktrkhouston has a human voice tweeting on it again. Not sure that has happened much since I left in 2009.

  1. Things have gone downhill since Mike Barajas left for KTUU!

  2. Thank you for solving the mystery about the Channel 13 news last night, I had a feeling you'd come through! I guess they couldn't even run a crawl? Really appreciate your coverage, as always.

  5. this is really too funny since KTRK used to be the creme de la creme of TV stations across Texas and the nation for that matter. I guess with these "technical issues" more might happen because they won't pay people what they are worth.

I suppose KTRK will turn into a 3rd or 4th rate TV station.

  6. Let me guess...KTRK uses one of those production automation systems?

  7. As stations continue to strive for higher margins and production systems become more complex this will happen more and more. In the next year many of the Houston stations will begin to air via a complete automation system.....now most have robotic cameras. All in the effort to keep profits in the 30-60% range. These systems are less flexible and have trouble dealing with unscripted breaking news.

13 is still the best in Houston... and probably will be for the foreseeable future. Belo and PNS will not put up the dollars to compete.

If you work in producion you haave a limited future.... really sad...

  8. It wasn't an automation issue( abc 13's news still uses a production team). For the record, a card failed in the switcher. The switcher died about 9:45pm and the engineering team did a hell of a job getting it back up by 11pm. Equipment fails. It happens.

  9. If the production switcher goes down in today's newscasts, the newscast is screwed. It reminds me of the old piece of junk Ampex switcher at KXXV in Waco. KTRK is still #1, and probably beat all the rest that evening.

  10. KTRK understands that they have a problem with a non-redundant control room and have been aggressively addressing this situation since late 2010. It is unfortunate that new Control Room A they have been building is not quite ready yet. It would have given them the redundancy to work around this problem and no one outside the station would have ever known.

  11. IN THE KNOW.. YOU ARE A COMPLETE IDIOT. YOU MUST BE RELATED TO MIKE BARAJAS OR MAYBE YOU ARE MIKE BARAJAS BECAUSE THAT IS ALL YOU EVER TALK ABOUT. GIVING FALSE INFORMATION ABOUT 'S*IT'YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT.
MIKE IS NOT AND HAS NEVER BEEN WITH KTUU.
