610 KILT's Matt Jackson and Adam Wexler are new 790 KBME morning show

Here is an update to what I blogged about last week. I just got off the phone with Clear Channel Houston AM operations director (and 740 KTRH host) Michael Berry about the new 790 KBME Sports Animal hires.

We all kind of knew that 610 KILT hosts Matt Jackson and Adam Wexler were leaving for 790 KBME last week. Now Berry has confirmed to me that the two will be the new morning show hosts for The Sports Animal from 6 to 10am.

Berry says he believes both Jackson and Wexler sound like two good friends you might overhear at a bar arguing about sports. They aren't afraid to call each other out and know their stuff. He says the duo are very natural at what they do.

So what does that mean for current morning show host Ted DeLuca? Berry tells the mikemcguff.com blog that DeLuca will move to the 790 KBME middays slot and could also work on other sports related duties.

The new schedule starts this coming Monday.

All of these changes at CBS Houston are making some 610 KILT listeners a little nervous. This anonymous comment came in on my last week Jackson/Wexler post:

If your a 610 fan it has got to be a little troubling that they have lost in 6 months, Andre Ware, Adam clayton, and now Matt Jackson and Adam Wexler. Listeners dont like change. Did 610 get a new program director that has been a major pain? It sucked losing Dre and Adam, especially Adam, it seemed like they were giving him more space and leeway and it was positive. Maybe they thought he was to much of a Rome wannabe. I like Wex, and Matt Jackson can be good but also annoying at times. Really makes you wonder about 610 though.

The answer is that there is new management for the original sports station in town and changes have no doubt been made.

Continental Airlines to accept credit cards during flights

Houston based Continental airlines says it will now accept credit/debit cards exclusively for on-board purchases (except Duty-free).

Continental is making the change in response to feedback from customers and flight crews who expressed interest in using card readers for on-board purchases to eliminate the hassle of fumbling for money and making correct change. The hand-held devices read cards for purchases of alcoholic beverages and headsets during flight in addition to providing valuable sales information to help better manage product inventory. Cash is still being accepted for Duty-free purchases. Testing of the hand-held devices began in the summer of 2009.

The new payment system starts December 1st and will be on all flights except for those going to China.

HCC-TV seeking to lure the YouTube generation

It looks like even college TV is getting a makeover thanks to Internet video:

In the early days, HCC-TV filled its schedule with pretty pictures, lists of community activities and videotapes of college classes. Payne, a long-time social activist, started with the station a decade ago, when programs were shot with one camera and fancy graphics were nonexistent.
For an audience weaned on YouTube and MTV, that no longer works.

“The potted plant and two chairs, we don't do that anymore,” said Debra Martine McGaughey, the station's general manager. “It's a new day for college TV.”

Starting in January, there should be even more to see. McGaughey said the station will kick off a new schedule, including more programming by and about students. READ MORE

TV game show host Chuck Woolery's new Austin, TX life

Who knew that the host of the Wheel of Fortune, Love Connection and Scrabble lives in Austin:

He came here in 2006 to tape a commercial and bought a home within two days. It was only supposed to be a vacation home.

Woolery has loved bass fishing since he was a kid, so Horseshoe Bay was a natural fit, and now he's on Lake LBJ every day. READ THE REST

Black Friday reveals the human condition

It's that time of year again for cold chills and ice...actually that is just how the stares feel you get from other shoppers this weekend. It doesn't usually get super cold in Texas right now temperature wise.

I have received reports from the Black Friday crowds and my first thought - this 24 hour cycle is just made for a documentary on the human condition! Good luck getting cameras on mall property long enough to capture it all though. It would have to be a sneaky operation.

Supposedly stores were opening up at midnight, 3:30am, 5am...etc. Heck I was still up at 2am watching old Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose interviews on YouTube. Why was I wasting my time when I could have been out fighting to save some money?

If I was lucky enough to be shooting a documentary on this event, I would have been watching for the line cutters. Someone I talked to saw a line cutter show up and try to offer someone $20 to pretend they knew each other so she could cut in line! Others just casually walked up reading a newspaper or smoking while trying to blend in as much as possible. "Don't look at me, I've been here the whole time, honest!"

Stores with security guards saw a lot of cheating going on from what I've heard, but if there were actual cops at the door...not so much. I heard some HPD off duty officers working one box store said if they caught cheaters or saw someone rushing the door, they were locking the place down. That's probably what it takes to stop it.

The photo above is courtesy of Murdock who took this at 3:30am outside of a Dallas area Kohl's.

Mike McGuff on 950 KPRC this Saturday 11am to 2pm with High Tech Texan

I'm going to be a guest on the High Tech Texan Show this Saturday from 11am to 2pm on The 950 KPRC-AM. It will be the case of the double Michael's as Michael Garfield and I will talk tech, holiday gifts and maybe bourbon! Not in Houston? Listen live here.

Look, I can't really tell you everything that will happen because it's radio...it's spontaneous. I didn't realize I would be "making love to the microphone" on Technology Bytes last week.

So tune in Saturday and the sky is the limit...especially if the bourbon people come to the studio and bring product {burp}.

I'm sure that if we are talking holiday tech that cell phones will come up. I have my eye on a pair of Androids. Maybe an HTC Hero or Samsung Moment will be under my tree this year. Anyone have these phones? What do you think?

TV live truck fried

This is why TV live trucks can be very dangerous:

A WSB TV crew failed to lower its 40-foot mast following a noon live shot at the Fulton County jail today. WGCL reports the operator drove the truck, mast extended, into some power lines. That triggered an explosion which damaged the truck and sent a surge of electricity into the ground below, damaging a water main. Amazingly, the crew survived and sustained only moderate injuries. 107.1 KGSR to move to 93.3, Todd and Don back on KLBJ

107.1 KGSR is a popular adult alternative station in Austin that's been on for years. Now the station is moving down the dial to 93.3:

Emmis Austin Radio announces that effective Friday, November 20th at 5pm, award-winning, adult alternative station 107.1 KGSR, will begin simulcasting on 93.3 FM. KGSR will be heard on both frequencies on the radio dial for ten days. Then, KGSR will be broadcast exclusively on the 93.3 frequency effective Monday, November 30th. At that time Emmis Austin Radio will launch a new Spanish-language, Regional Mexican format on 107.1 FM.

The 93.3 signal is licensed to the city of Cedar Park and boasts one of the largest total coverage areas in all of Texas. KGSR’s unique blend of Texas, roots, and adult alternative music will now be available to potential listeners in areas of Central Texas that its previous signal did not reach.

The 107.1 frequency is licensed to the city of Bastrop and has superior signal coverage in Austin’s highest density Hispanic areas including those with those with the largest Spanish-speaking populations in Central Texas.

This new format, and signal transition will optimally allow the respective stations the ability to best reach the communities they serve.

The new station, whose name and line-up will be announced at 5pm on Monday, November 30th, will include personalities already familiar to Austin’s Spanish-speaking community, as well as dynamic, new talents. Advertisers will be able to reach the active Hispanic market of Central Texas beginning Wednesday, December 2nd via 107.1 FM. READ THE REST

That means Hot 93.3 is no more.

How Fox 26 KRIV's Isiah Carey lost weight

Just in time for November television sweeps, Fox 26 KRIV lets us in on how Isiah Carey aka "The Insite" lost all of his weight. Here's a hint, it was the old fashioned way.

If you work in media the best way to lose weight is to quit your job. I dropped 10 pounds without trying after leaving KTRK 13. Think about it...reduced stress, no more free food or snack machines calling your name. Of course you could also insert jokes here about how if you quit, you'll have a lot less money to spend on food!

UPDATE
Isiah Carey said on Twitter I was wrong for saying this story ran on purpose during sweeps. But I don't see how I am wrong. Carey tweets, "The managers approached me and asked if I would do the segment."

OK, sounds like it was put on the old sweeps calendar to air in November. I don't get the problem.

Former KHOU reporter Johnathan Walton is chasing UFOs and more

Last time the mikemcguff.com blog caught up with former KHOU 11 morning funny man Johnathan Walton, he was in LA pitching a TV show pilot and trying his hand at stand up comedy. Now he is literally chasing UFOs and a lot more. WATCH HIS LATEST VIDEO

Mike McGuff: So you are producing cable shows now...what have you worked on/working on now?

Johnathan Walton: Yes, I'm producing cable shows now. I just wrapped on a live action series for the Cartoon Network called "The Othersiders" it's kind of like a teenage ghost hunters type show. During the past 2 years I've produced 2 seasons of "UFO Hunters" for The History Channel and one season of "That's Impossible" for The History Channel as well.

MM: How did you land this?

JW: I got a job as a PA for a production company and worked my way up. Los Angeles, as I have learned, HATES outsiders. The mentality here is: If you don’t work in LA, you must not know anything. So even though I had 8 years of TV producing experience working at KHOU, KABB and WSVN, it meant nothing to the production companies here. So I had to start at the bottom as a PA… along with all the college kids.

Luckily I was able to move up pretty quickly because I had one major advantage over all the college kids: 8 years of TV producing experience at KHOU, KABB and WSVN.

MM: What are the differences for you between working cable and local TV?

JW: A lot of travel. I’ve traveled all over the world producing shows. My crew is usually 15 people. So that’s 15 plane tickets, 15 hotel rooms and 15 people I’m responsible for. It’s very stressful because things NEVER go according to plan.

One of my most difficult shoots to date was for a UFO Hunters episode. My crew and I had to hike up a 10,000 foot mountain range in the dead of the night. I had about 90 lbs of gear on my back. I nearly fell off that mountain 1000 times. We had an 18 person crew that day. Two people in our crew never made it up the mountain. One fell during the climb, tumbled down, tore his clothes, cut up his face, arms, legs and F-ed up his ankle. The other one just freaked out when the oxygen concentration in the air dipped and he couldn't go any further. Somehow I was able to push through. The air was so thin. It was hard to breathe. I was literally crawling on my hands and knees for 4 hours while loose rocks fell all around me. I wanted to quit. But I was in the middle of nowhere Nevada, hundreds of miles from anything. I begged God almighty to give me strength to finish in one piece. It was treacherous. If something did happen, like me tumbling off the mountain, no one could have rescued me. Thankfully I got what I needed content-wise and the show turned out great. I will NEVER do anything like that again though. Unless the money's right.

MM: Last time we talked you were attempting a stand up comic career, is that still on or have you moved on to TV show producing permanently?

JW: I still do stand up. But lately in my spare time I’ve been mainly focusing on producing webisodes for “Some Stupid Show” It’s my opus. I’m trying to develop a web following so when I get the opportunity to pitch the show to the right exec at the right network it’ll be obvious it can work. Just go to the website somestupidshow.com for the hijinks.

MM: What do you predict you will be doing next?

JW: Producing another TV show.

MM: Do you miss TV news?

JW: Yes and no. I was so fortunate at KHOU. During my 5 year tenure I was able to witness 11 News This Morning go from the 4th rated morning news show to the number one rated morning news show. I remember during my final days at Channel 11, the station actually threw a party to celebrate being number one in the morning. It was the first time in station history that KHOU’s morning news was ever number one. I’m so grateful to have been a part of that. It was a wonderful and magical experience. But I don’t miss waking up at 3am.

MM: What about Houston?

JW: I miss Houston a lot. For starters, Los Angeles doesn’t have an HEB. I literally have to go to 3 different markets to get everything I want… when HEB used to have everything under one roof. No plug intended. There are no Taco Cabanas here either. Finding a good breakfast burrito in LA is like locating water on the moon.

I miss my Houston friends a ton. I miss the Art Car parade, the Water Wall, the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Houston is an amazing city and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

MM: Anything else you want to add?

JW: Life is beautiful. Camryn Manheim. Not so much.

Millions will have to repay part of tax credit

Bob Martin aka "The Accountant to the Stars" lets us in on the bad news.

KTRK 13 and ABC sites update Web look

My old stomping grounds abc13.com, the Web site for KTRK in Houston has altered the look of its Web site. This goes the same for the other ABC owned and operated stations.

I looked at it for just five minutes and it is a VAST IMPROVEMENT. It really couldn't get much worse than the previous look with that huge video player scrolling through the top. The part I hated most about the old site was how when you went to click on the news headlines, they would move to reveal a story tease. Getting your news on that site was like playing Whac-A-Mole! That's not a fun game when you are simply trying to read a story about the latest murder or crime spree in Houston.

The story level pages have also been upgraded with a smaller video player. I like this look too.

Overall the pages are laid out better, it appears things are easier to find and I'm sure advertisers will be happier too. Great job. Like I said before, it would have been hard to make things worse. Have fun.

abc13.com

In other TV Web site news, I mentioned Twitter/Facebook earlier today that WFAA.com relaunched today. I had mentioned previously that other Belo sites have already flipped to the new look. My question is...what happened to Belo Interactive who used to power the sites? Now the sites are done by Broadcast Interactive Media. I like the look of the new Belo sites much better than the old look too.

Looks like things in the TV web world are heating up!  Now I look forward to a change in the Fox owned and operated station sites.  Never have been a fan of that look for some reason.  One time a Fox station called me about a job and I honestly told them what I thought of that look. I couldn't hold back.

Davlantes grew up in Chicago and earned degrees from Lane Tech and Northwestern University. KENS 5 names Jeff Vaughn as new anchor

The speculation is over. It turned out not to be Jeff Brady (former WFAA 8 anchor) or ABC newsman Jim Avila to take over KENS 5 anchor Chris Marrou's gig but Jeff Vaughn of KSHB-TV Kansas City:

KENS 5 has named Jeff Vaughn, an award-winning broadcast journalist, as its new evening news anchor, KENS-TV President and General Manager Bob McGann announced Tuesday morning.

Vaughn, who most recently has been the morning news anchor for KSHB-TV, the NBC affiliate in Kansas City, Mo., will succeed Chris Marrou, the veteran KENS 5 news anchor who is retiring from the station after 36 years on the air.

"We are elated to have a journalist of Jeff's caliber joining the KENS 5 team," McGann said.

Prior to his work in Kansas City, Vaughn was a weekend morning anchor and general assignment reporter at WDIV-TV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit. Vaughn has Texas roots as an anchor and reporter at KCBD-TV in Lubbock and as a reporter at KMID-TV in Midland. Vaughn is a graduate of Kansas State University.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to join KENS 5 and deliver the news to San Antonians," Vaughn said Tuesday. "I'm happy to be coming back to Texas, and my wife and I can't wait to move to San Antonio and get immersed in the culture."

Vaughn has been recognized for outstanding broadcast journalism work. He won a regional EMMY Award in 2005 for anchoring WDIV's weekend morning newscast. He also has been honored by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Texas Associated Press and the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.

"As we turn the corner on a new era in KENS 5 television, I am extremely pleased and excited about Jeff joining our team as we look forward to our 60th year on the air," said KENS news director Kurt Davis.

Vaughn will begin appearing on air in January. READ IT

MoJos, VJs The New Reality Of TV News

Jim Barthold of TVNewsCheck has a nuts and bolts story on the one man band station costs. Guess what? It's a lot cheaper than a $40,000 to $50,000 pro camera:

Broadcast and cable news outlets seem be taking as many different approaches to equipping MoJos as there are cameras at the NAB and CES.

"For as little as $10,000 and as much $22,000, a station can outfit a multimedia journalist with all the tools that they need to gather content," said Jerry Gumbert, president-CEO of Audio, Research & Development (AR&D), a Dallas-based local media consulting firm.

That includes a camcorder (an SD unit at the low end of the range, an HD at the high end), a laptop with a lot of processing power and editing software. READ MORE

One expert interviewed for the piece suggested stations going to Best Buy or the Apple store to shop for equipment. Wow have things changed.

I think MoJos at a station make sense, but should be one part of an overall news gathering operation. There is still an argument for two person crews.

Is Steven Tyler in Aerosmith or not?

Sirius XM host Eddie Trunk spent time with Aerosmith Joey Kramer over the weekend who told him this about the Steven Tyler situation:

Joey explained to the audience that there are issues for sure between the band and Steven Tyler. The biggest issue is simply that Tyler wants to take 2 years away from the band, and the band does not want to stop working. Its as simple as that. They will not sit on the sideline for 2 years and fully plan to move on with a new singer. Now this does not mean it will still be called Aerosmith. Its unknown as to who the singer will be or what they will call it. Maybe a new band, maybe Aerosmith, who knows at this point? Its clear that the other 4 members of Aerosmith are very united in staying together and if Steven continues to persue interests outside of the band and building "brand Tyler" they are fully prepared to keep going without him. Its also clear that Steven's surprise appearance on stage with Joe Perry last week in NYC did not help issues at all. Apparently not even Joe knew this was happening until Tyler walked out. I also heard he entered Irving Plaza holding a ticket to the show, then got on stage, did a song, made his statement, and left. Again, from all indicators, this only tossed more gas on the fire. I'm not taking sides at all on this. I understand both sides to be honest. Aerosmith wants to work and do a new album, and Tyler has been in a 40 year old marriage and wants to take a break to try something else for a couple years with different people. READ THE REST

I used to enjoy shooting high school football games for abc13.com, but no one ever said it was an easy job. Take Fil-Turd for example. He's on the field just trying to get TV news highlights and gets kicked out of the stadium:

Everything after that is kind of blurry. There was a lot of cursing and grabbing and pushing and shoving. Somehow, my babycam transferred itself from my right hand to my left before one of the men in blue caught my arm and twisted it behind my back. His buddy grabbed me by the left bicep, and they marched me toward the gates. READ THE REST

Maria Todd ready for Houston return, no longer on air in San Francisco

UPDATE 2/2010
Maria Todd on Mix 96.5 KHMX

I published a quote that Houston radio's Sam Malone gave me last week about a reunion with his former morning show partner Maria Todd. I'm sure you remember these two from there popular run at CHR 104.1 KRBE.

Looks like Maria Todd is now available for a return to Houston according to the San Francisco Chronicle:

Morning team Fernando and Greg, bumped off the dance floor after KNGY (Energy) was sold in September, has landed at KMVQ (MoVIN' 99.7). They replace Maria Todd and producer Marcus "Chunk" Bonfliglio. Said Fernando Ventura: "First, Levi Johnston agrees to pose nude, and now Fernando and Greg land at Movin' 99.7. READ MORE

San Antonio to get new 24-hour local news channel?

Jeanne Jakle of the San Antonio Express-News reports that the city could be in the running for another 24 hour local news channel after the closure of News 9 San Antonio a few years ago:

Time Warner Cable here is in the midst of "a conversation" about one, confirmed Gavino Ramos, Time Warner-S.A.'s vice president of communications. However, in Ramos' words, the cable company has yet to iron out details.

Austin's Time Warner system initiated such a 24-hour local news channel — News 8 Austin — a decade ago, Ramos said, and it's thriving. It's been tried here before, too. In 2003, Time Warner partnered with Belo Corp. and launched News 9 San Antonio. It was shut down in 2004, because it just couldn't draw enough interest to sustain it. READ MORE

Will Houston see another 24 hour local news channel after the failed operations like News 24 Houston and KNWS 51's 1990s effort? Probably not. Without a cable company like Time Warner who likes them, I doubt it.

Former KHOU reporter let go from CNN newscast

I have news about a former KHOU 11 reporter at CNN...and no it's not Twitter maniac Rick Sanchez either. This time it is about someone who was more recently in Houston.

App/hardware lets iPhone and iPod Touch receive HD Radio broadcasts

If you want to listen to HD Radio on your iPhone or iPod Touch, then you need to shell out $80 for Gigaware HD Radio accessory, designed for and sold exclusively at RadioShack. Then you have to download an app:

The accessory and HD Radio application combination takes advantage of the iPhone 3.0 operating system and its ability to support external accessories. iPhone 3.0 allows application developers to utilize external hardware support. Compatible with iPhone and iPod touch models updated with 3.0 software, the application is available on the App Store and requires the compatible Gigaware accessory.

The Gigaware Navigation Control HD Radio Receiver, for use in conjunction with the HD Radio application, is the first unit to enable iPhone and iPod touch models to tune into HD Radio broadcasts, including HD2 and HD3 multicast channels. Exclusively available at RadioShack stores and through www.radioshack.com, the receiver enables HD2/HD3 channel reception, delivers Program Service Date (PSD), produces CD-like digital quality sound and gives consumers the freedom to operate the Apple device remotely. An iTunes Tagging button on the navigation control allows users to tag songs for future review and purchase on the App Store.

I guess this is good if you plan on buying an HD Radio receiver. However you can listen to radio broadcasts on your iPhone/Touch from Clear Channel for free with the I Heart Radio app (and for a small monthly fee Sirius XM).

I'm surprised iBiquity Digital Corporation, the developer of digital HD Radio, has not released a free, standalone app that just plays HD Radio. Many HD Radio stations are available online after all.

Megan Fox is sly like one

Actress Megan Fox is profiled in the New York Times Magazine by Lynn Hirschberg. We learn that Ms. Fox is not the character we see portrayed in the media.

The [Angelina] Jolie comparison would probably have been made by the media eventually, but Fox sped up the process. By linking herself to Jolie, she sped up every process. And when Jolie became a mom and a good-will ambassador, Fox was ready to step into her shoes. It was an easy fit. Fox enjoyed creating entertaining copy. If she invented or amped up the scenarios, she could (theoretically) manage her image. And, like Jolie before her, she told entertaining tales of darkness and lust. “When I sit down to talk to men’s magazines, there’s a certain character that I play,” she explained. “She’s not fully fleshed out — she doesn’t have her own name — but she shows up to do men’s-magazine interviews. There’s something so ridiculous about always being in your underwear in those magazines, and you know the interview is going to run opposite those pictures. So, there’s a character that talks to all of them.” READ THE REST

Houston Internet musical "Horrible Turn" debuts with KTRK 13 cameo

Horrible Turn from Horrible Turn on Vimeo.

The Houston shot Internet musical Horrible Turn has finally hit the Web and it is amazing. 1560 The Game KGOW program director Chance McClain (one of the folks behind the project) gave us a preview a few weeks ago. He told us there was a celebrity cameo from CBS sports guy Spencer Tillman, but he did not tell us there was a KTRK Channel 13 manager acting too! More on that below...

This movie is a mixture of Grease, math geeks, Prodigy mixed in with evil villains. If you are a fan of the Dr. Horrible series with Neil Patrick Harris, you will recognize this as a prequel (and it will probably make even more sense). But don't worry, I've never seen Dr. Horrible and was still laughing out loud (with the movie, not at it). I will go watch the Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog series now because I enjoyed Horrible Turn so much.

McClain and partners did an amazing job on the production of the movie. This is top notch for a fan made film. The songs are great (and I am no musical fan), the story is good, jokes funny all mixed in with good acting and singing.

Wendy Granato KTRK
But for me there was a personal connection.  Within the first 10 seconds of the movie there was my former abc13 boss playing a news anchor. That's right KTRK 13 Special Projects Executive Producer Wendy Granato opens the film reading the news! Hey channel 13, if you ever have an anchor out sick, just go look in the special projects department for a fill in! (PRESS PLAY ABOVE TO IMMEDIATELY SEE HER PERFORMANCE)

Hopefully the Houston media (and others) will start featuring this film and expose it to more people. The filmmakers' work should be applauded.

Houston Texans players score on radio and TV

David Barron has an article ont how Houston Texans players are appearing on radio/television and could be prepping for a second career like CBS analyst Spencer Tillman and others have:

Some players take a more carefree approach. Wide receiver David Anderson, who appears on KGOW (1560 AM) and KPRC (Channel 2), is as apt to discuss reality TV as football. Last week, he and KGOW staffer Raheel Ramzanali crooned a Backstreet Boys song in tribute to injured Texans tight end Owen Daniels, who has his own weekly air time on KFNC (97.5 FM).
"David is more about levity than about sports," said KGOW host Sean Pendergast. "We’ll do a segment about football, and then he’ll take the headset off and say, ‘We’re going to talk about the Lakers in the next segment, aren’t we?’ " READ MORE

Steven Tyler says he is still in Aerosmith

Aerosmith Steven Tyler jumped on stage at a Joe Perry solo show and said he is still in the legendary Boston band. Then they performed Walk This Way.

However Perry still seems a little reluctant about the whole thing:

"He wants to take two years off from the band," Perry told the magazine. "The rest of the band wants to keep on working. We have so many different options to fill up that time. Anything is possible at this point. Basically, any communication that we've had over the last couple of months has been through managers, so that's been pretty strange." READ MORE

Most Dangerous Large Metro Areas for Pedestrians

Lobby group Transportation for America says the South has some dangerous cities for walking:

The list of the most dangerous metro areas for walking is striking in its uniformity. Nine of the ten metro areas are in the South, and the top four are in Florida. These areas are dominated by lower density and automobile-oriented development patterns, which include high-speed urban arterials that are particularly hazardous for walking. A national FHWA survey affirms these results, finding that respondents in the South rate pedestrian safety far lower than their counterparts in the rest of the country. SEE THE LIST

A guy + his cantankerous dad + Twitter = CBS TV show

I try to keep this site family friendly (that's what working at Disney for eight years does to you), but I have to talk about this. In fact I've been hesitant to post about it because of the language but the more I see it in the mainstream press...well, here we go.

A Twitter account called sh*tmydadsays has racked up more than 730,000 users. Here is the account's description:

I'm 29. I live with my 73-year-old dad. He is awesome. I just write down shit that he says

And the tweets stick to that. Well guess what? It's the new media darling of Hollywood this week reports THR.com:

CBS has picked up a comedy project based on the Twitter account, which has enlisted more than 700,000 followers since launching in August and has made its creator, Justin Halpern, an Internet star.

"Will & Grace" creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick are on board to executive produce and supervise the writing for the multicamera family comedy, which Halpern will co-pen with Patrick Schumacker. Halpern and Schumacker will also co-exec produce the Warner Bros. TV-produced project, which has received a script commitment. READ THE REST

Fox 26 KRIV contributor's movie ties

Bob Martin aka The Accountant to the Stars has been instrumental in helping me research Houston TV news anchors that have appeared in movies.

But even he has some Hollywood ties:

Mike - My mother (Louise Martin) is the actress playing the part of the
ticket clerk in the final scene of Scarecrow (1972) with Gene Hackman in the
attached video clip. We lived in Detroit in 1972 and the scene was filmed at
the Greyhound Bus Depot in Detroit. She was a stage actress all of her life
and she did a lot of industrial films and TV and radio commercials. Her
agent called her for the cattle call they liked her and she got the part.
She used to travel to New York quite a bit for auditions and she also landed
a very small part in the Woody Allen film Annie Hall (1977).

Sam Malone and Maria Todd reuniting on Houston radio?

UPDATE 2/2010
Maria Todd on Mix 96.5 KHMX

Is former 104.1 KRBE morning show host Maria Todd returning from San Francisco to reunite with Sam Malone somewhere on the Houston radio dial? That's the rumor.

Anyone who has been reading this blog knows I've been following Sam's every move since he left Mix 96.5 KHMX, so I went right to the source and asked Malone for the scoop.

"I'm actually wringing my hands like an evil scientist who uses the phrase 'diabolical,'" Malone told the mikemcguff.com blog. "I've have been counting the days until my "other" wife would be free to return to the airwaves as the funniest woman in Houston radio! Will we be together again? That's a PPM tease."

Sounds cryptic, but I think his words to me point to YES! The PPM acronym refers to Arbitron's Portable People Meters which is the way radio ratings are now measured. With Maria Todd and Sam Malone back on the air, those pager-like devices that track listening habits might explode.

For those of you who do not know, Sam Malone and Maria Todd were a very popular morning show team on CHR 104.1 KRBE from the 90s to the mid-2000s.

Stay tuned here.

Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2009 ceremony highlights

Rowdy Yates of 100.3 KILT sent me this great recap of the 2009 Texas Radio Hall of Fame ceremony:

It was the biggest and best, Most attended and most comfortable. Held in a historic place, Tin Hall, there was no better venue to showcase legendary talent, than a legendary landmark, which has hosted concerts and special events since 1889.

About 350 were in attendance and the faces that belonged to the voices were a 'who's who' of Texas Radio royalty including Paul Berlin, Joe Ladd, Pam Ivey, Crash Collins, Mac Hudson, Arch Yancey, Michael Berry, Bill Young, Bill Moffett, Chuck Dunaway, Jim Carola and R.B. McEntire just scratch the surface.

Award for "best preserved personality" had to go to Dr. Bruce Nelson, who is as witty as ever, and is in better shape today than he was during his days here at KENR. Dr. Bruce is the General Manager of KFTX in Corpus Christi, and is recognized for breaking an unknown artist named John Conlee and his tune "Rose Colored Glasses." John placed 27 hits in the country top 40, including 7 number 1's. Houston made him a star.

Most touching moment came when Cathy Forsythe of KACC was inducted and honored. Her award was accepted by her children. Cathy passed away from cancer a few years ago, and contributed more than her own good work to Texas radio. Running KACC in Alvin, she built and developed that college radio program into the most recognized in the country (this is a Junior College mind you) that has produced numerous radio industry pros including Wendy Miller, Tom Fontaine, Bobby "Slam" Duncan and TV personalities that now work for KPRC, Telemundo and ESPN.

Paul Ray works on the radio in Austin-he is only the second 'public' radio personality to be inducted. He can be heard on KUT-FM hosting a show dedicated to soul and blues from the 40's through the 70's. What made me laugh the most was his story of realizing the impact that music had on everyone-be it good or bad. He recalls his older sister being punished for playing a sacrilegious and sinful b-side when she was young. Her father smashed to pieces a vinyl 45 straight from Satan's studio. It was a Christmas standard "White Christmas" recorded by The Drifters.

JP Pritchard and Lana Hughes from KTRH could have kept us entertained for hours. To see the big framed, big voiced 'gold standard' for morning news in Houston show a softer side was enough to make a few of us tear up, and her story of how she got her job at KTRH will make most of us giggle for the next few days.

Standing ovations came for Houston TV and radio star Larry Kane (who is no longer with us) KQUE's Scott Arthur and legendary rocker Colonel St. James who helped make top stations out of 97 Rock and KLOL, and has contributed to the success of KLDE, KILT and KKRW.

From the business side of things, I'd like to say that Bill Bailey is still a draw. He has not been on the radio for some time, but his involvement with the Houston rodeo, and his work as a Harris County Constable has done much to keep him in the public eye. On the day he should have taken center stage, and soaked in every bit of the spotlight he deserved for his good work, he shared the stage with two compadres from his days at KIKK, which proved to be tasteful and quite classy. * I will point out, this is the only time I have used those terms to describe him, Joe and Arch!

As for the music heard on radio then and today, there were numerous people in attendance who spun the platters from unknowns who would became giants. B.J. Thomas, ZZ Top and Kenny Rogers were called "Houston Crud" but they became rock, pop and country music legends -they owe Texas (and primarily Houston) deejays for taking a chance on them.

Behind the scenes you might never know the name Tom Merriman. But the short songs you hear in between the records you all know, and have sung along with since the 50's. His "TM Productions" recorded more snappy and snazzy jingles for more Texas radio stations than any other. He is also credited for creating sixty second sing alongs we all grew up with for Nestle and others, and was also the man credited for creating "Otto the Orkin Man" bringing prestige and personality to pest control.

Scott Arthur was the first person to receive an award at the ceremony, and he set the tone for not only radio's past, but it's future. After 40 years he knows the formula: "personality, creativity, freedom and fun" -that is what works, that is what wins.

Hey Mike,
I went with a buddy to the Guy Expo on Saturday afternoon around 3-ish and stayed till about 6p. We had a pretty good time, beer was good, food priced about right. Cars were awesome, good looking cheerleaders, football games on tv. Seemed to be something for every guy. Great activities from the Dynamo ( I won a shirt kicking a soccer ball), Texans with a setup to kick a field goal (very cool!) Aeros (shoot a puck), Energy (throw a football) all good things to try. Good sports memorabilia to purchase.
