VIDEO: Marvin Zindler's 'Slime in the Ice Machine' tease with Mike McGuff

Mike McGuff gets to yell "Slime in the Ice Machine" for Marvin Zindler

Here's a throwback for you...

When I was interning at KTRK abc13 in 1995, legendary Houston Action 13 consumer reporter Marvin Zindler asked me to do a "Slime in the Ice Machine" tease for that night's newscast!

The great Alan Hemberger also makes a comment.

RIP to both of them.

Ilona Carson gives birth!

KTRK abc13 anchor Ilona Carson has baby girl for first time

UPDATE AUGUST 30, 2016
Ilona Carson returns to work! (Video below)

Last January, I told you how KTRK abc13 anchor Ilona Carson was expecting baby number three and now the big day has arrived...yesterday actually.

"Happy to share my big news: Georgina Eleanor was born yesterday," Carson tweeted today.

After two boys, Carson has a girl this time.

Pierce was born in 2012. James was born in 2009. James is a great name.

Now we are on baby watch for reporter Miya Shay and morning anchor Samica Knight.

KHOU 11 makes major anchor changes

Morning, evening, night, weekend anchor changes at KHOU 11

KHOU 11 is going through major, major anchor changes. In fact, in my time blogging and before, I don't ever remember a change to this degree all around the same time at a Houston TV station.

Multiple sources are telling me that a meeting was held in the channel 11 newsroom this morning announcing the following anchor schedule changes.

Morning show:
Russ Lewis (incoming from KGW Portland) and Lisa Hernandez (moved from evening anchoring)

4pm:
Rekha Muddaraj will be added (from weekend night anchoring)

10pm:
Len Cannon and Mia Gradney (moved from and possibly still working evening newscasts)

Weekend mornings and nights:
Ron Trevino (moved from morning anchoring)

Sherry Williams will be moved from weekend morning anchoring to weekday morning reporting full-time.

Unknown what will happen to morning anchor Lily Jang at the moment. UPDATE: Lily Jang will be a 4pm feature reporter until her contract ends.

At this point, we do not know when all of these changes are taking place. I assume Greg Hurst will remain on the evening shows.

I reached out to KHOU for comment and have not heard back. If/when I do, updates will be posted here.

What do you think of the new lineup?

From an outside perspective, KHOU does well in overall household viewing ratings-wise, but has been lacking in the younger demographics coveted by advertisers. The other Houston stations have been doing better in the 18 to 34, 25 to 54...etc. age ranges. I would imagine this is the reason for the big shakeup under new news director Sally Ramirez.

Stay tuned.

Telemundo Houston to launch 4pm news

Telemundo Houston KTMD to launch a 4pm newscast this fall

 photo 2016_telemundo_zps3xl9f06e.jpg

Starting September 26, 2016, 14 Telemundo-owned stations will add a new half-hour local newscast to deliver even more local news to their communities including KTMD Houston at 4pm.

Here is more from the release:

MIRAMAR, FL – (June 21, 2016) – The Telemundo Station Group today announced an expansion of its local news programming, unveiling plans to launch a new 30-minute newscast that will air weekdays at 5:00 PM ET / 4:00 PM CT beginning Monday, September 26 at 14 of its local owned stations. The expansion comes less than two years after the Telemundo Station Group ushered in a new era in Spanish-language local television by adding a half-hour newscast at 5:30 PM ET / 4:30 PM CT across 14 markets. The new news expansion at 5:00 PM ET / 4:00 PM CT will result in viewers receiving an additional 150 minutes of local breaking news coverage and up-to-the-minute weather forecasts each week in their respective markets. In those markets, the new 30-minute newscast will replace Telemundo network’s half-hour show, The Best of Caso Cerrado, and viewers will continue to enjoy Caso Cerrado with Dra. Ana Maria Polo every weekday at 3 PM ET and 7 PM ET in its regular time periods.

“The Telemundo-owned stations have transformed local Spanish-language news and the way Hispanic communities receive the local information that matters to them,” said Manuel Martinez, President, Telemundo Station Group. “This local news investment serves as a testament to our deep-rooted commitment and our sense of responsibility as local broadcasters to ensure that our Spanish language viewers – who have been underserved for far too long – receive best-in-class local news, up-to-the-minute weather forecasts and have access to important consumer information they need to help them stay ahead and be empowered consumers.”

The Telemundo stations that will add the new half-hour newscast include: Telemundo 52 Los Angeles (KVEA), Telemundo 47 New York (WNJU), Telemundo 51 Miami (WSCV), Telemundo Houston (KTMD), Telemundo 39 Dallas-Fort Worth (KXTX), Telemundo Chicago (WSNS), Telemundo 48 Area de la Bahia (KSTS), Telemundo 60 San Antonio (KVDA), Telemundo Phoenix (KTAZ), Telemundo Tucson (KHRR), Telemundo 40 Rio Grande Valley (KTLM), Telemundo Denver (KDEN), Telemundo62 Philadelphia (WWSI) and Telemundo Las Vegas (KBLR). To support this initiative, the Telemundo Station Group expects to immediately hire at least 30 additional employees to boost the local newsrooms.

Martinez added, “I am proud of our stations and the work they do day in and day out to inform our Spanish language communities.”

The local news expansion continues the increased commitment NBCUniversal has made to its local Telemundo stations to better serve Spanish-language viewers all across the country. Thanks to the company’s significant investments, the Telemundo Station Group has revolutionized the way that Spanish-language viewers receive local news, with many local Telemundo-owned stations seeing strong results. At the close of the May 2016 Sweeps Period, the Telemundo stations in Miami, Phoenix and Denver outranked all local stations in their markets. NBCUniversal’s investment has also supported other local news expansions, including in Philadelphia at Telemundo62 (WWSI) and in Boston at Telemundo Boston (WNEU); bolstered newsgathering efforts; equipped the news teams with the resources they need to be competitive in the markets they serve; launched newly redesigned digital platforms; and introduced new, single-station apps that feature the industry’s first localized and automated weather push alerts in Spanish. Less than two years after the launch of the Telemundo Station Group’s wildly successful consumer investigative franchise – Telemundo Responde (Telemundo Responds) – 12 Telemundo Responde teams have collectively produced more than 1,800 stories and recovered nearly $5 million for consumers all across the United States and Puerto Rico. This year, the Telemundo-owned stations are working closely with local community based organizations to host voter registration drives all throughout the country to help inform, empower and engage Hispanic voters. The stations’ hyper-local voter registration effort is part of Telemundo’s #YODECIDO one-of-a- kind multiplatform and comprehensive effort to empower Hispanic voters nationwide.

'The Buzz Lady' Roseann Rogers checks in for K9s4COPs

Roseann Rogers aka 'The Buzz Lady' is now executive director of K9s4COPs which grants fully trained K9s to law enforcement agencies in 33 states across the country

 photo roseannrogersk94cops_zps6vfouv7k.jpg

It's been a couple of years since I've featured Roseann Rogers aka "The Buzz Lady" on the pages of this blog. That's all about to change today as she writes in to tell us about her new chapter. Soon we may be calling her "The K9 Lady!"

Mike,

Life is a journey and you just never know what direction it will take.

Since moving here in 1995, I have been truly fortunate to have had a very successful broadcasting career, as The Buzz Lady, covering what’s hot, hip and happening, then later moving on to becoming part of the management teams at KPRC and KTUBE. I have also had appearances on KHOU and KTRK. In fact, I was the first host to launch the informative and entertaining program, “Check this Out!” on Channel 13.

Broadcasting led me to business, where I’ve had the opportunity to work for the Finger Corporation (Finger Furniture), as the director of Marketing and Business Development, as well as the VP of Strategic Marketing and Development at the Houston Chronicle and the Director of PR and Business Development for John Daugherty, Realtors, where I still hold my real estate license.

For years, I have had a passion for philanthropic endeavors. I have co-chaired dozens of events for nonprofits, from luncheons to galas to fashion shows. (American Cancer Society, Nutcracker Market Preview Party, Trees of Hope, AIDS Foundation Houston, American Heart Association, Junior League of Houston) I’m also a founding board member of Dress for Success, Houston and was Co-Vice President for Trees of Hope. Three years ago, I was the auction chair for K9s4COPs’ annual event UNLEASHED.

photo roseannrogers_al_zpsargy2e4n.jpgFounder and Chairman Kristi Schiller and I have known each other for 20 years. First crossing paths in our broadcasting careers and then later chairing the Nutcracker Market Preview party together, and most recently being a part of the fundraising efforts for K9s4COPs. So when the opportunity presented itself to interview for the Executive Director position, I just simply had to go for it!! And, the rest is history. I started at K9s4COPs the first of the year and it’s been a great move and decision.

I truly believe in what we do everyday! Kristi and I are both moms of only children and we both feel there has ALWAYS been a calling for us to help the community in a big way! K9s4COPs does just that and together, we make one BIG dynamic duo! K9s4COPs grants fully trained K9s to law enforcement agencies in 33 states across the country and internationally in Paris, France. When we heard the Paris National Police lost their K9 Diesel in the line of duty during the Paris terrorist attacks we had to reach out and we did. In March, Kristi, myself and Harris County Sheriff Deputy Ted Dalhin, who our organization is the inspiration for after he lost his K9 in the line of duty, we traveled to NYC to deliver him to the French National Police so they could take him back to Paris. Since its inception, K9s granted by K9s4COPs have taken more than $135,000,000 with of contraband, cash and weapons off the streets. We’ve granted more than 130 K9s to agencies and schools and the numbers continue to increase. 2016 will be a record year for K9s4COPs, granting more K9s then ever before.

Since joining K9s4COPs, I’ve launched and developed new fundraising endeavors including the K$9 Challenge, where we challenge everyone to donate just $9 to help our cause. Using my marketing and business skills, I’ve increased our fundraising event revenue, expanded our reach with social media campaigns and produced two PSA ’s, currently in rotation throughout Texas and several states where we have granted K9s.

So, the next time you see me on TV I won’t be covering the story, rather I’ll be part of the K94COPs story on how we’re helping to keep our communities and schools safer one K9 at time!

Thank you for what you do.

Keep up the good work! I truly appreciate you wanting to know more about what I’m doing now.

I guess you can call me The K9 Lady!!

All the best,

Roseann

Russ Lewis joins #KHOU11 as promised

KGW Portland morning anchor Russ Lewis joins KHOU 11

Russ Lewis
Russ Lewis
When KHOU 11 hired KGW assistant news director Sally Ramirez to be its news director, we learned this hire would be a package deal.

That's because Ramirez's husband, Russ Lewis, is the morning anchor at the Portland TEGNA sister station.

At the time of Ramirez's hiring in February, we were told Lewis would, "be joining the KHOU 11 on-air team later this summer."

Well, the heat advisories are on...it must be summer!

So after 15 years in the KGW morning news seat, Lewis said his last "good morning Portland" TVSpy reported today.

"[I'm] off to Houston next week, working for the same company, staying within the family, just leaving this family and moving on to Houston, TX," Lewis told his Portland TV audience this morning. "My wife is already there working for the company too."

Now we have to guess which shift Lewis takes.

According to his bio, Lewis joined KGW in 1999 after working at stations in Sacramento, Tucson and El Paso. If you happen to know the actual stations he worked for, let us know in the comments.

He is a graduate of New Mexico State University.

Ned Hibberd joins WCNC NBC Charlotte

Former FOX 26 KRIV reporter/anchor Ned Hibberd joins WCNC NBC Charlotte

Former longtime FOX 26 KRIV reporter and weekend anchor, Ned Hibberd, is leaving his post-Houston gig as assistant news director at Fox Charlotte WJZY-WMYT after two years and some change.

His next move is across the street as they say.

That's because Hibberd is heading to WCNC as the new executive producer of investigations and special projects.

As I wrote before, Hibberd was at KRIV for nearly 25 years where he started as an intern.

The Rice grad worked as a production crew member, assignments editor, associate producer, investigative reporter, fill-in anchor and general assignments reporter.

His first day at WCNC will be June 23rd.

Dave Ward is entering the Guinness World Records

KTRK abc13 anchor Dave Ward hitting the record books

Dave Ward
I've been hearing some really interesting and monumental news concerning KTRK abc13 anchor Dave Ward.

We have long known it is his goal to be on the air at channel 13 for 50 years and he is very close to that honor.

Multiple sources close to Ward tell me what could be even a bigger deal is that the "Dean of Houston news" will be entering the Guinness World Records as the longest running local TV news anchor in the world at the same station in the same market for 50 years!

I'm sure it has been no easy task staying at the same station for five decades, but it's also been a lot of work to get in the record book. I hear Ward has been gathering papers and documentation over the last few months so Guinness has the proof!

This all becomes official in November when Ward hits the big 5-0 with the now Disney/ABC Television Group station.

Dave, I can't wait till it's 60 years!

UPDATE
I found Ward's page on the Guinness World Records site! Here is what it says about him:

The longest career as a television news broadcaster is 49 years and 218 days, achieved by Dave Ward (USA), who began working on 9 November 1966 and continues anchoring at KTRK-TV, in Houston, Texas, USA, as verified on 2 June 2016.
Ward was hired as a news department reporter and photographer in 1966 and has served as an anchor of the KTRK-TV 6 PM newscast since 1968. Ward is known for beginning every newscast with the phrase, "Good evening, friends."

According to Wikipedia, before Ward, the person who held the record was Ecuadorian news anchor and vice-president of news of Ecuavisa in Quito, Alfonso Espinosa de los Monteros. He set his record back in August 2014.

Courtney Perna departs KHOU 11

Great Day Houston reporter Courtney Perna is leaving for FOX 4 WFTX Fort Myers/Naples

 photo courtneyperna_zps2y4inlpb.jpg

KHOU 11 Great Day Houston reporter Courtney Perna is leaving for the Fort Myers/Naples, Florida area to co-host The Morning Blend on WFTX FOX 4.

Here is what she wrote on her Facebook page:

**HOUSTON, I WILL MISS YOU!! For more than three years, I’ve had the BEST JOB I could ever imagine as the reporter (and producer) for Great Day Houston and sometimes for KHOU 11 News!
From animal encounters to high-flying adventures that made my bosses cringe, to serving as emcee for numerous events and even taking a pie-in-the-face on live TV, I’ve had a blast (maybe too much fun?) and I hope you, the viewers, did too.
To my buddy, cameraman and ‪#‎PartnerInCrime‬, Frank - you’re the best and I’m so proud of the work we’ve done! To the amazing Deborah Duncan and the rest of the GDH crew, it’s been an absolute pleasure working with you and more importantly, learning from you!
My last day (on the show live) is Friday, then I’m headed to SW Florida (Fort Myers/Naples area) to co-host The Morning Blend on WFTX FOX 4, a show similar to Great Day Houston. A fellow KHOUer said it best, "I'm sad to see you go, but I'm glad to see you grow." That's exactly how I feel. Please keep in touch via social media and as always, have a Great Day, Houston!

Before Houston, Perna worked in her home state of Michigan covering hard news as a reporter/producer for WXMI FOX 17 in Grand Rapids.

HOUSTON – (June 15, 2016) – In a project that began before the tragedy in Orlando, Houston Public Media is exploring the aftermath of the 1991 tragic “gay bashing” murder of 27-year-old banker Paul Broussard in Montrose through a documentary and live televised town hall discussion airing during Houston Pride Week on June 23 at 8 p.m. on TV 8 and online. “A Murder in Montrose: The Paul Broussard Legacy” marks the 25th anniversary of this high-profile murder with a look back at how the event sparked major changes in Houston impacting politics, victims’ rights and community activism.

Arts and culture senior producer Ernie Manouse will host the live town hall discussion following the documentary, where audience members and panelists will share their perspectives, explore how Houston has changed in the aftermath and talk about where we are today, particularly in light of the recent violence in Orlando.

“After the Broussard murder, the Houston community, both gay and straight, came together – lives were changed and the city changed,” said Manouse, producer of the documentary. “Now, 25 years later, we wanted to take a historical look at what activism resulted, how victims’ rights changed, who entered politics and who helped to create change in the city.”

Manouse interviewed a wide variety of sources for the documentary including former mayor Annise Parker, longtime community activists Ray Hill and Jack Valinski, victim’s rights activist Andy Kahan and state representative Garnet Coleman, among others.

Houston Public Media’s News 88.7 public affairs show “Houston Matters,” which airs weekdays at noon, will examine the history of activism in Houston on June 22 and will discuss the documentary with Manouse on June 23. Houston Public Media is also inviting community members to share their perspectives and memories of the time on social media using the hashtag #Montrose1991.

More details about the documentary, bonus material, and online content from community members will be available on amurderinmontrose.org, which will launch in conjunction with the broadcast.

Jack Williams

Houston Public Media/NPR fans will be sad to hear that longtime news director and afternoon host, Jack Williams, is saying goodbye to News 88.7 KUHF and Houston.

His wife landed a great job in Omaha, so the family is starting its Midwest chapter.

"I feel very fortunate to have spent nearly 18 years here in Houston," Williams told mikemcguff.com. "Professionally, I couldn't have asked for anything more. Personally, Houston is home now and hopefully I'll be back someday. For now though, it's off to another adventure."

Williams has been a fixture in Houston since 1999 when he hit the radio scene as an anchor/reporter at 740 KTRH. By 2000, he jumped across to the same position at KUHF. In 2008, he became the public station's news director.

His radio career kicked off in 1994 as a reporter and anchor at stations in the Rio Grande Valley's KURV and later at Austin's KVET.

Williams has been named the Houston Press Club’s “Radio Journalist of the Year” and has won a number of regional Edward R. Murrow and Texas AP broadcast awards for his reporting. He’s also the radio president of the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters board.

While Williams is taking off, another HPM staffer is moving up.

Here is the release:

Where is Pablo Alsina? Where was KHOU 11 sports?

Were KHOU 11 sportscasts sent to the showers early for a few days?

I just got back from a vacation in Galveston and you wouldn't have known it (unless you looked at my instagram) because I was still blogging.

And while I was away, the KHOU 11 sports department apparently went on a vacation.

According to channel 11 viewer email to me, there were a couple of days when there was no sportscast during the TEGNA station's newscasts.

Puzzled viewers also took to Facebook to ask the station what was going on.

Multiple sources have told me that main sports anchor Pablo Alsina is no longer with KHOU 11. I asked Alsina Thursday evening via Twitter Direct Message if he still worked at the station and did not hear back. However he did take to Twitter to say he is on vacation.

I emailed two KHOU representatives Wednesday to find out what happened to the missing sportscasts and never heard back from them either. Turns out one is away from the station.

Twitter also reveals why one sports staff member was not around to do the news. Sports reporter Daniel Gotera is on vacation.

No news on the whereabouts of weekend sports anchor Matt Musil during the MIA sportscasts, but he was on the Thursday 6pm news delivering news about the sports world.

Stay tuned.

After two years at KPRC 2, news director Rhonda LaVelle returns to Detroit, this time at WXYZ

Rhonda LaVelle
Rhonda LaVelle

Rhonda LaVelle is leaving the KPRC 2 news director role for the one at WXYZ Detroit. This will be a homecoming for LaVelle who is from Michigan and previously worked at WDIV Detroit.

In 2014, LaVelle came from the Motor City to be channel 2's assistant news director. Within months, she took over the top news gig when then ND, Deborah Collura, left for the general manager gig at WCNC Charlotte.

Here is the internal KPRC memo obtained by mikemcguff.com about LaVelle's departure:

This is a tough note for me to write. After 2 years here at KPRC, I am moving back to Michigan. I have accepted the News Director position at WXYZ in Detroit.

I have loved every minute here in Houston. We have done some great things and I know you will continue to do so. I am very proud to have been a part of such a great team. It's been so rewarding to watch us grow on air and on our digital platforms. The stories we have covered together have been just amazing. Houston is an unbelievable news town!

Thank you to everyone one of you for everything you have done. I wish all of you the best of luck!

My last day is June 17th.

Tonight is the night all of Houston TV land has been waiting for, the marriage of KHOU 11 morning meteorologist Chita Johnson and rancher Lane Craft. So when she returns to channel 11 post honeymoon, she will be Chita Craft on air.

The star-studded reception was held Saturday night at the River Oaks Country Club (although I am not sure where the actual ceremony was held).

Check out the couple's engagement photos here. Then really go back in time for kid photos of the duo.

Deborah Wrigley exits KTRK abc13

UPDATE AUGUST 2020
Deborah Wrigley to leave abc13 KTRK

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 06, 2016
Deborah Wrigley returns to KTRK abc13

Former bosses praise longtime channel 13 reporter Deborah Wrigley as she leaves the station

 photo deborahwrigley_zpskeeu2202.jpg
McGuff with Wayne Dolcefino & Deborah Wrigley (2015)

Longtime KTRK abc13 reporter Deborah Wrigley is no longer with the Disney/ABC Television Group station.

"We are disappointed she turned down our offer to maintain a relationship with us," KTRK VP of Creative Services David Lee told mikemcguff.com. "We wish her the very best and appreciate her years of service."

Thursday, Wrigley's bio was removed from the station's website. There has been no mention of any departure on her social media accounts.

After 37 years or so, you can call Wrigley two things, an amazing writer and survivor. Let's focus on the latter for a moment. She is the last standing reporter from when she started (this is excluding anchors). Can you imagine all of the big stories in that time she has covered?

"Every major city has that one person who is a great writer, knows the city inside and out and can turn stories that are compelling, hard hitting or will put a tear in your eye," former KTRK news director Dave Strickland told mikemcguff.com. "Deborah is that journalist and Houston is a lessor place without her on our streets reporting."

As far as reporting, Wrigley knows her storytelling. She understands how to get to the heart of a story.

TV staffers will understand this aspect about her writing. If you look at one of her scripts, it would not naturally be cut and pasted over to a web story. She knows how to write specifically for TV in a simple and clear way so it has natural flow for the TV audience. I think this is a style that has been lost over the years.

"She is one of the best news writers in the business," former KTRK assistant news director Don Kobos told mikemcguff.com. "There isn't a story in Houston that she hasn't covered and covered well. Deborah's departure negatively impacts KTRK."

And don't get me started on her institutional knowledge of Houston. Tie Wrigley's historical perspective with her love of history and you get one compelling story. I'd day almost untouchable in this aspect.

If you are talking about Wrigley, then you have to mention animals. Her love for our four-legged friends is so well known. Any KTRK producer or assignments editor knows to automatically assign Wrigley to animal stories because her passion will show through.

Where does her flair for reporting come from? It actually doesn't come from a journalism degree, but a University of Houston English degree and maybe even from Hollywood of all places.

Deborah's father, Dewey Wrigley, did visual effects and cinematography for the likes of Cecil B. Demille. He was under contract with Paramount his daughter once wrote.

Naturally, Wrigley had a following with the Houston television viewing audience. I have two personal experiences with this.

One time while working at channel 13, I was sent to interview a couple in Pasadena for a consumer segment. When we wrapped up the questions, all they wanted to talk with me about was Deborah Wrigley. She had apparently interviewed them many years before our meeting that day and they loved and followed her ever since. If I remember correctly, the couple had fled their burning apartment building all those years ago, but on that tragic day, were thrilled they got to meet Deborah Wrigley as a result.

When I was reporting for KIAH 39 years ago now, I was dispatched to a brutal convenience store robbery on the east side of the viewing area. Well, Wrigley had been there to cover the story the day before and the employees were still talking about it. After my interview, Wrigley was the topic of conversation, not the clean up after the crime. Once again, these people had just gone through a harrowing experience, but at least they were excited they got to meet Deborah Wrigley as a result.

Let me say from working in the industry and now blogging about it in my underwear, viewers are not usually this excited about meeting TV journalists these days from what I can tell.
