Matt Musil retires from KHOU 11 Houston after 43 years

Matt Musil is retiring from his sports/anchor reporter position with KHOU 11 Houston.

"I know I speak for [Jason Bristol] when I say it’s been an honor and a privilege to work alongside our dear friend," colleague Zack Tawatari tweeted. "Thank you Matt! I’ve always believed that a person’s impact can be seen in how others react to their name. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t smile ear to ear when I said 'Matt Musil.' To have half the career you did and help half as many people would be a dream come true. Thank you Matty!"

UPDATE: Musil will be joining the Houston Parks and Recreation Department as communications director.

Last September, I blogged about how Musil was celebrating 43 years with KHOU, starting in 1980.

You might not know about when Musil flirted with leaving Channel 11 in 1982 for a job with KSL Salt Lake City, Utah.  Musil decided not to leave Houston because he was married with two young kids and was tired of moving. So who did he help get that job?  You've probably heard of the guy, University of Houston alumnus and CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz. In fact, Nantz was Musil's fill-in for $25 a newscast when he was on vacation.

After graduating from Kansas State University, Musil, a semi-professional baseball player and college athlete, entered his broadcasting journey with KNDY 1570 AM/94.1 FM Marysville, Kansas.

He transitioned to KWNS AM-FM in Pratt, Kansas, now known as KWLS.

Transitioning to television, he made his mark at KTVH 12 in Wichita, Kansas, now recognized as KWCH. Before his tenure in Houston, Musil served as the sports director for WTVM 9 Columbus, Georgia.

According to his bio, the sports journalist has raised over $3,000,000 for local charities over the past decades with Matt Musil All-Star Charities.
