Maria Salazar left FOX 26 KRIV
Maria Salazar let's us know that she resigned from her FOX 26 KRIV reporting position in September 2021.
Salazar shared her brave story on her Facebook page:
"Three months ago, a chapter in my life ended. I left my career in local TV news. I wanted to post something publicly. At least, a goodbye. I didn't know what to write.
It was hard to put into words why I left. Burnout?
Definitely.
But it went beyond that.
Around the same time I left, some articles came out about the wave of resignations in the industry. I tried to read one. It began with a story about an executive producer candidate crying when discussing an opportunity to 'advance' her career.
I barely finished the second paragraph before I couldn't make out the words on the screen through my own tears. I did that a lot. I cried a lot.
When I told management I had to resign because I couldn't do it anymore, I couldn't keep it together. I cried like I cried during my dark encounters with postpartum depression in mid-2020. I could barely mumble words...and I didn't fully understand why I was crying.
Months later, I'm still trying to articulate my decision. The best way I can explain it now is my priorities changed. What I am willing to allow to consume my mental load, energy, and time has changed. I wanted meaningful work that values my talents and my role as a mother. Where I don't feel like I'm constantly in a futile battle.
I found it. I'm still telling meaningful stories -- with compassion and creativity. It's what I love. And, although the mom guilt never goes away, I am spending more time with my family. Lots more. I'm feeling better.
I recently heard someone say the 'Great Resignation' about people leaving their jobs in 2021 is actually the 'Great Revelation.' Indeed, for me it has been. Three months ago, a new chapter in my life began."
Salazar joined FOX 26 as a general assignment reporter in February 2018.
She came to KRIV Houston from WFMZ 69 News in Lehigh Valley, PA where she worked as a bilingual reporter.
Before that, Salazar worked as a reporter/producer for Telemundo Atlanta WKTB and WUVM 4 Azteca Atlanta.
The Georgia State University grad is a three-time Southeast Emmy award-winning reporter.

Rascon recently gave us a Facebook update that tells us his last day will actually be Monday, January 3, 2022. Plus, Jacob will not take this place on the channel 13 5pm newscast, Live at 5.
"Wow, how time flies by. One week from Monday I will look into the camera at ABC-TV for one last time.
36 years of reporting events of the world to a television audience will come to an end. What an incredible journey it has been!
I am so proud to pass the reins to my extremely capable and able son, Jacob.
He will not be anchoring the 5pm news, but you will see him reporting and anchoring other newscasts.
I’m happy for him. He has spent a lifetime being involved in this business—vicariously through me, and of course, paying his dues at a variety of stations, including the NBC Network as a correspondent.
We’ve even had the opportunity to report on stories together, which you will see more of next week. Enjoy the photos!"
Rascon's longtime co-anchor, Melanie Lawson also posted about the Rascon transition:
"It’s hard to believe this is really happening now. My partner of 23 years is retiring exactly one week from now, but leaving us with the next chapter of his legacy.
As Art Rascon prepares to say goodbye and his son (and clone) Jacob joins us, take a look back at some of the incredible photos he is sharing from his career - and what a career it has been!!
I’ll be sharing some of our behind the scenes moments, as we count down to his last day. We love you, Art, and I’m going to miss you like crazy!!
Rascon writes that he and Lawson have been a team longer, "than any other reporter/anchor team in the Houston television market." It's been 23.5 years for this anchor team.

It’s a moment when I thought “Austin is it”. This is where I’m going to stay. I love my job, I love the people, I love the community.
Sometimes God has other plans though. Friday was my last day at KVUE. It’s hard to put into words what the last four+ years have meant to me, so let me just say thank you, Austin. Thank you for trusting me with your stories—a privilege I never took for granted. Thank you for your kindness: whether it was when we met in person or through emails or messages on social media. Mostly though, thank you for being a community I called home for so many years. Thank you for the friendships that will last a lifetime. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives. NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth /KXAS and Nexstar Media Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group (NASDAQ: NXST), today announced the broadcast details for “Lone Star NYE: Countdown to 2022,” a New Year’s Eve program airing December 31, 2021 from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. CST, hosted by NBC 5’s Katy Blakey and KARK’s D.J. Williams from Reunion Tower’s Cloud 9 level.
NBC 5 is the hometown broadcaster for this special New Year’s Eve program, airing in an additional 27 markets on Nexstar television stations, with special musical guest, Scotty McCreery, and including the traditional Dallas Reunion Tower Over the Top NYE fireworks, light and drone spectacular.
“Lone Star NYE: Countdown to 2022” will include the “Over the Top NYE” live fireworks spectacular presented by Hunt Realty Investments and Reunion Tower, benefiting Children’s Health, with NBC 5 and Nexstar serving as official media sponsors. This year at Reunion Tower, spectators will experience the addition of a 225-drone light show to the annual presentation of panoramic fireworks and tower light show, including more than 5,000 pyrotechnic special effects fired from Reunion Tower and the 259 LED light display. The drone light show, engineered and flown by DFW-based Sky Elements, will light up the sky at heights of up to 400 feet and create an array of visual elements and an immersive experience never seen before above the Dallas skyline.
The special on-air performance by country music artist, singer and songwriter Scotty McCreery, makes this celebration another top highlight of the year. McCreery recently released his fifth studio album, Same Truck, which featured his fourth consecutive No. 1 hit on both the Billboard and Mediabase country radio charts, “You Time.” His second single from the album, “Damn Strait,” is out now and rapidly rising up the charts. The North Carolina native’s No.1 hit, “Five More Minutes,” inspired a Christmas movie by the same name which is currently airing on the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries network this month. McCreery will also perform in concert at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth, TX this Saturday, Dec. 11.
“We’re excited to be a part of the festivities and excitement with our local production of Lone Star NYE, giving North Texans a live, Central Time Zone countdown and a special night to remember,” said Tom Ehlmann, NBC 5 President and General Manager. “We look forward to working with our partners at Nexstar and Reunion Tower for the fifth year in a row.”
“’Lone Star NYE: Countdown to 2022’ is a wonderful local production that brings together millions of viewers throughout Texas and across seven states, and Nexstar is excited to be able to provide such quality entertainment on our broadcast stations and their digital and streaming platforms,” said Andy Alford, President of Broadcasting for Nexstar Media Inc. “We’re especially pleased to have country music star Scotty McCreery headlining the entertainment portion of the show and we’re looking forward to delivering a special program that will be fun for the entire family.”
“I’m excited to be part of the ‘Lone Star NYE: Countdown to 2022’ event,” said McCreery. “New Year’s Eve is such a fun time to gather with friends and family to celebrate the end of one year and look forward to the possibilities of the new one. I’m honored to be part of NBC 5’s and Nexstar’s party.”
This year’s production on NBC 5 will also stream live on NBCDFW.com, and on the NBCDFW app that is available for mobile and streaming users. UPDATE
Univision Houston November 2021 sweeps wins
Next, I received this in-depth pdf file from Telemundo Houston KTMD showing its dominance in both Spanish-language and English-language TV news.
The KTMD document shows its ratings compared to other Houston stations.
FOX 26 KRIV is on tops in November 2021 sweeps

Telemundo Houston November 2021 sweeps highlights
Houston television news ratings are a popular request from readers and I wish I had the cash to subscribe to the ratings services, but even a Patreon account couldn't get us to that level!
So we rely on the Houston TV stations to supply us with some crumbs of information on social media and FOX 26 delivered in the English-language broadcasts for this last sweeps period. Before you jump on me, I haven't heard/seen anything from Univision or Telemundo yet.
First time I remember KRIV topping the two most important TV news dayparts. Notice in the fine print at the bottom of the video, the FOX 26 wins are in the Adults 25-54 demographic.
I reached out to FOX Television Stations for more info. Stay tuned.

Houston TV stations launch NEXTGEN TV
Television viewers in Houston, the eighth-largest TV market in the United States, can now experience the future of broadcast television as 10 local TV stations launched NEXTGEN TV, a revolutionary new digital broadcast technology based on the same fundamental technology as the internet and digital apps.

The new standard presents viewers with more news and entertainment choices while providing broadcasters with a more compelling and interactive way to deliver their content.
NEXTGEN TV is the first major overhaul to the Advanced Television Systems Committee's standard for receiving over-the-air (OTA) signals in 25 years. Now broadcasting in 35 markets, NEXTGEN TV is expected to reach 45% of U.S. television households by the end of the year. Today's launch marks a significant milestone, as it is the largest number of stations to transition in a single market at one time.
NEXTGEN TV can deliver:
Consistent volume across channels
Added voice clarity with Dolby's Voice +
Stunning 4K, High Dynamic Range (HDR) video
Movie theater-quality sound
Enhanced internet content on demand
NEXTGEN TV is a feature built into select new TV models manufactured by LG Electronics, Samsung, and Sony—and widely available to consumers with a rapidly growing number of television sets in homes across the U.S. While features available on NEXTGEN TV will vary by device and by broadcaster as commercial service becomes available in local markets, it is designed to be future-proof, enabling a viewer's television set to advance in lockstep with technological improvements.
"Houston will now get the most out of live news, events, and sports programming, as NEXTGEN TV merges over-the-air antenna TV with the internet, enhancing its information and entertainment value," stated Ralph Rendon, vice president of creative services and programming for KRIV/KTXH, the FOX-owned duopoly in Houston. "Through a combined effort of investment, meeting critical deadlines, and deployment of powerful new technologies, we're able to provide a better and more engaging audio and video experience for our viewers."
"This launch took an extraordinary amount of collaboration among the 10 TV stations involved and is a clear demonstration of the entire industry's commitment to NEXTGEN TV," said Brett Jenkins, EVP and chief technology officer for Nexstar Media Group, Inc. "Viewers will quickly notice the brilliant video and improved audio delivered by NEXTGEN TV. But along with these enhancements come important upgrades in broadcaster's ability to provide new customer experiences and services, allowing us to explore new business opportunities to meet the challenges of today's evolving digital world."
"These stations all share a commitment to provide their viewers with the best content and service and the launch of NEXTGEN TV enables that by creating a more inspiring and personalized viewing experience," commented Anne Schelle, managing director of Pearl TV. "NEXTGEN TV exponentially expands the type of content broadcasters can provide their unique audiences, and the ways that viewers can engage with their television screens and the level of information they will have access to. Houston's launch underscores the excitement we all share as we continue innovating this revolutionary technology for viewers."
Houston viewers can now find 10 channels over-the-air with NEXTGEN TV: FOX Television Stations' KTXH (My Network, channel 20) and owned-and-operated KRIV (FOX, channel 26); Nexstar Media Group, Inc.'s KIAH (CW, channel 29); Univision's KFTH (UniMas, channel 67) and owned-and-operated KXLN (Univision, channel 45); ABC owned-and-operated KTRK (ABC, channel 13); Graham Media Group's KPRC (NBC, channel 2); TEGNA's KHOU (CBS, channel 11); NBCUniversal-owned KTMD (Telemundo, channel 47; and University of Houston's KUHT (PBS, channel 2). Viewers watching these channels can look forward to enhanced television viewing provided by NEXTGEN TV as a complement to streaming platforms, as NEXTGEN TV is provided as a free OTA service to viewers.
The participating stations have worked together to ensure that current programming remains available to all viewers, regardless of whether their television service is provided over-the-air or by a cable or satellite company. Antenna viewers can simply rescan their TV sets to ensure full service. Rescan instructions are available at: fcc.gov/rescan. Cable and satellite subscribers do not need to take any action.
Houston viewers can learn more about NEXTGEN TV by visiting www.WatchNextGenTV.com, which offers a guide to cities carrying the service, as well as links to available NEXTGEN TV models.

Brandi Smith tests positive for COVID
Brandi Smith checked in on Instagram to let us know she still works at KHOU 11, but hasn't been around lately because she tested positive for COVID-19.
Smith adds this is a breakthrough case since she is fully vaccinated.
The signs of COVID came when she started losing taste and smell. Other than that, she says the other issue is a congested nose.
A couple of weeks ago, Smith posted on Facebook that she was out due to throat issues which were unrelated.
As to when we will see Smith again, well that won't happen until December 17th when her vacation is over.
If you haven't seen Smith on TV as much lately, like on the channel 11 Saturday morning news, that's because she was promoted to digital anchor over the summer.

Samica Knight is a singer?!
We know Samica Knight as a popular anchor on abc13 KTRK's morning news, but did you know she can also sing?
Knight was put to the test behind the microphone with a huge audience at the Reliant Lights Mayor's Holiday Spectacular last Saturday in downtown Houston.
When the mic wasn't working, and a proper test was needed, Knight knew how to dazzle the big Houston crowd with some impromptu vocalizing to get the job done.
And who is Knight's biggest fan?
The cameras focused on morning meteorologist Elita Loresca who was filming the performance with her phone and having a great time supporting her friend.
UPDATE
Houston Chronicle columnist Joy Sewing tells me on Twitter that Knight, "frequently sings gospel songs on her Instagram page to pay tribute to her Granny. Beautiful."
