Loriana Hernandez, former KTBC & KXAS anchor, vows to beat cancer

Former Fox 7 KTBC & NBC 5 KXAS anchor Loriana Hernandez is fighting acute leukemia

Loriana Hernandez
Loriana Hernandez
When Loriana Hernandez left Fox 7 KTBC and Austin with her young son after seven years to join her husband at his job in Virginia, she never thought this new journey in life would lead to where she is now - a diagnoses of acute leukemia.

She had been experiencing horrible pain while anchoring for the last few months, but did not realize what her body was telling her.

Hernandez has received lots of well wishes in the media since her story went public. Her friends are also trying to help her raise the money needed to battle the disease.

Mike McGuff: Does it make you stronger to know there is so much support for you in the Austin community?
Loriana Hernandez: It absolutely touches my heart and gives me strength to have so many supporting me and rallying around me. It is not how I choose to normally live my life. For my 20 years in TV, I have rallied around so many to help others, from holding fundraiser to telling someone's story and even launching a foundation to help those with autism. My heart only knows how to rally around others. Right now, it is almost surreal to have the table turned on me and everyone rallying around me. It gives me strength. I have so many prayers being said, positive energy sent, and care packages full of love headed my way and for the first time in my life, I'm ok with it. I'm allowing it because it can save my life. I turned to social media after being hesitant to do so because I had to decide between keeping this private or having a support team like no other. I felt weak, broken down and lost, and decided I have nothing to hide and everything to gain sharing my story.
Social media and the power of a network of friends got me one of the best doctors in the country to treat leukemia. It took me 48 hours of social media and by the grace of GOD, not only did I get in Johns Hopkins Hospital, but Dr. Mark Levis called me directly himself and said, "come now your bed is waiting for you."
I'm forever grateful to my media family, FOX 7, and colleagues at all the stations who have sent prayers.

Talk about some of the symptoms you felt while anchoring newscasts?
LH: The last 6 months while I was on the air, strange things happened to me. Bone pain like no other was a big, big symptom. I remember going to work one morning to co anchor the morning show, "Good Day Austin," and my arm was asleep and numb. It tingled and sent excruciating pain that was almost unbearable. I rolled icy hot on it and pounded my arm with my fist. I tried acupuncture and more. Meteorologist Zack Shields and my co-anchor, Dave Froehlich, kept trying to help me figure out what was going on. I read the news and held my arm. In between sound bites on air, I grit my teeth because of the pain. I couldn't miss any more work.

I had some blurred vision and bouts of exhaustion but brushed those symptoms off to getting up at 1:45 am for work. Not to mention my life as a single parent while my husband and I commuted from Washington D.C. I mean, who wouldn't be tired? I just decided to get over it and ignore the pain. Once I got up and got to work, I often felt fantastic because the morning show energized me! I loved our team and had so much fun, which made ignoring the pain easier.

Were you scared to go public with this?
LH:Yes, as I mentioned before, I was scared to go public. After all, how does a health reporter who prides herself on eating a whole plant based diet (80%) and fitness fanatic get so sick?
I also hate asking for help. Again, I help rally around others. I have trouble accepting help from others without guilt. But I made the decision to do so based on two reasons. One, when I got the diagnosis, I went into reporter mode. I had to get Dr. Mark Levis. It was like getting the big interview. I was going to win at all costs and find him. The power of social media made that happen. And two, in my entire career, I have been open and shared so many ups and downs, hoping others could learn from my challenges, like weight loss or fertility and IVF, that I was not going to change and HIDE behind cancer. I have nothing to hide and everything to gain, like a cure.

Do you think your fight can raise awareness so people can get checked themselves?
LH: YES, YES, AND YES!! My message to everyone is two fold.

First, get a COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT, or CBC, every three months. My diagnosis came after conducting a blood test needed to start an embryo transfer. My fertility doctor wanted to make sure I was healthy after a bout with the flu. If it weren't for that test, I would have been pregnant with leukemia.

Let me explain how quickly it developed. My last blood test in September looked good. By Jan 20th, cancer had taken over.
Second, TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTHY, EAT HEALTHY, AND GET FIT. Who you are when you arrive at the hospital, as in how healthy you are, determines how they can treat you. The healthier you are, the greater your shot. I am on a very, very aggressive treatment because I am fit. I thank GOD I have been taking care of my body.

MY MISSION ONCE I BEAT CANCER IS TO EDUCATE OTHERS ABOUT CANCER, CBC COUNTS AND FITNESS, IT CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE

Will you continue to blog on cleaneatingcleanliving.com about your cancer fight?
LH: YES YES YES. I am on a mission now to change lives. I want everyone to know how I fought this, how I won (I know I will), about diet and fitness after cancer, and one day, I hope to go through IVF and have the baby we were hoping to have. My goal is to inspire and educate others on my battle. Not only will I continue my blog, but I'm working on a documentary. It only seemed like a natural thing to do given my husband and I both work in TV. (He is currently a News Director for Comcast SportNet but moved up the ranks after being a photographer for many years.) We are documenting every step of this journey to educate others.
I have big plans after I win the battle, to share, educate, and inspire as so many have done for me.

Austin TV personalities have sent mikemcguff.com their thoughts on Hernandez and her current battle.

" I worked along side her for 7 years. I've never seen anyone more cheerful, determined, professional, smart, and caring. That's a helluva combination. She's too much of an optimist to let this get the better of her. She's a doll." - Mike Warren, 5 & 9 anchor at FOX 7 KTBC Austin

"Loriana is one of the most caring people I have ever met. If anyone ever needed anything, she was the first one to offer help, no matter what. Well now its her turn. I hope everyone who reads this either takes a moment to say a quick prayer or donate money. This is the fight of her life and she needs every ounce of support we can give her. She needs to stick around to raise her two year old son and grow old with her husband. Please help by going to this link. Any amount is appreciated. Fundly.com/Loriana-s-win" - Jenni Lee, former Fox 7 KTBC anchor

"I am so glad i had the opportunity to work with her before she left because she is an awesome person. We became friends in a hurry because she is a funny person with a great outlook on life. Loriana's smile is so contagious. It's easy being around her with her great personality and positive attitude. With her strong will and faith, this cancer has no chance of defeating Loriana!" - Zack Shields, Morning Meteorologist on FOX 7 KTBC

"Loriana is not only sweet and beloved .... she's amazingly strong and that's why we are all confident she will be able to fight this aggressive leukemia. She not only has the viewers pulling for her with prayers and positive thoughts ...she has plenty of sisters in TV news who are rooting for her with admiration and support." - Judy Maggio, main KEYE Austin anchor

Mia Gradney 3rd anchor on KHOU 11 morning news?

Putting Mia Grandey on anchor desk is KHOU's latest move on morning news chess board

Mia Gradney
Mia Gradney
Watching the Houston TV morning news race between KHOU and KTRK as of late reminds me of the Cold War era arms race. One news department is constantly reacting and trying to top the other one. Here's to hoping there is no Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) at the end though.

Each station now must do everything to take out new Houston morning ratings leader KPRC and its two new additions, but the KTRK vs KHOU morning war seems to be more connected.

The latest move appears to be the upping of reporter Mia Gradney to the KHOU 11 News This Morning anchor desk in the past weeks. That's right, there are three anchors on set now including Gradney, Ron Trevino and Lily Jang.

Patricia Lopez
Patricia Lopez
Let's go back in time to 2007 or so (year of arrival not in her bio), when Patricia Lopez showed up at KTRK abc13 to focus on family oriented consumer stories. Stories like how to save money on meals, free stuff for families to do on the weekend...etc. On Lopez's Facebook page, the description is, "ACTION 13 CONSUMER Reporter Patricia Lopez is focused on women's issues and saving you money through her weekly 'Stretch your Dollar' segments on abc13."

KHOU decides to strike back.

Move forward to the summer of 2012 when Gradney leaves KIAH 39 and jumps to KHOU 11 where she is assigned to report on family issues for the station's morning news. Her reporting is described on Facebook as, "Mommy matters, family life, health happenings, and a whole lot more!"

Right before November sweeps 2013, KTRK moves Lopez to mornings which pits the two reporters against each other. While one is waging battle with a free fashion advice app, the other is blasting out smoothie dos and don'ts. Sounds like something out of Sun Tzu's The Art Of War. In this new role, Lopez sits at the anchor desk and is on camera throughout the show - much more than her days in the afternoon newscasts.

Then last week I'm tipped off that Gradney is now an anchor on KHOU's morning newscasts. Sure enough, in my monitoring of the 6am show over the last few days, she is an active participant throughout. But even with the added duties, Gradney still reports on her "mommy matters" beat as of now.

So what will be KTRK's next strike? Lopez will get a full half-hour show during the morning news block?

Neither Gradney nor a KHOU representative would confirm to me that she is officially an anchor on the show. But this follows the T.O.T.T.S. acronym I am now using to confirm things in these cases - Turn On The Television Stupid.

Since you're still reading, you might be interested to know this is not the only anchor change KHOU has made in 2014 so far.

Stay tuned.

2014 Houston TV Winter Storm Awards

Sam Malone and the crew over at AM 1070 The Answer KNTH/Phonoscope have put together the 2014 Houston TV Winter Storm Awards based on yesterday's small ice/snow event (embedded above).

Hilarious.

"I sit in my TV/Radio studio surrounded by flat screens while on the air," Malone told mikemcguff.com. "The producers, cameramen, board ops and I were rolling on the floor laughing at some of these reporters. Then we decided to create an awards video. We have enough video to make it 30 minutes long!"

See if your favorite Houston TV broadcaster won.

Catch Sam and crew on AM 1070 The Answer KNTH and Phonoscope weekday mornings.

Marcelino Benito of KGUN Tucson joins KHOU 11

KGUN's Marcelino Benito is the second Tucson reporter to be hired in Houston this month

Marcelino Benito
Marcelino Benito
Alert! Houston is being taken over by Tucson reporters who graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

Earlier, I blogged about Samantha Ptashkin of KVOA joining KPRC. Now it's Marcelino Benito of KGUN 9 On Your Side according to On the Move, but Benito is joining KHOU 11 as a general assignments reporter.

"I will definitely miss KGUN 9 and Tucson," Benito told mikemcguff.com. "I've made lifelong friends here and got a chance to tell amazing stories in Arizona. It all helped me get ready to take this next step. Tucson will always be a very special place for me."

Kidding aside, this is actually a homecoming for Benito since he is originally from Houston.

"There's really no place like home and getting to report in my hometown is a dream come true," Benito told me. "Can't wait to get back to Houston to get started!"

Before KGUN, Benito worked as a weekend anchor/reporter for Fox 11 KMSB in Tucson and a reporter at WLNS in Lansing, Michigan. As mentioned in the lede, Benito graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

If you know of anymore Tucson reporters heading to Houston, email me.

No word on a start date. Benito tells me he starts at KHOU in mid-February.

(Thanks Taylor)

Samantha Ptashkin of KVOA joins KPRC

Samantha Ptashkin, KVOA Tucson reporter, to join KPRC 2 as MMJ

Samantha Ptashkin
Samantha Ptashkin
KPRC 2 anchors started congratulating her Friday on Facebook, TVSpy's On the Move mentioned it, so I think it's safe to say KVOA Tucson reporter Samantha Ptashkin is coming to KPRC 2.

"I am very excited to move to Texas," Ptashkin told mikemcguff.com. "I have heard great things about Houston and I can't wait to start living and working there!"

If she were in Houston on a day like this, she might stay put in Tucson.

Ptashkin, which is pronounced P-tash-kin, has been reporting at News 4 Tucson since February 2012. According to her bio, she previously worked for Fox 11 KMSB-TV Tucson as a reporter and weekend anchor and a reporter and noon show anchor at WREX-TV in Rockford, IL.

She is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. She also minored in Spanish and studied in the city of Guanajuato, located in central Mexico.

According to an internal KPRC memo, Ptashkin starts February, 17th as a multimedia journalist (MMJ).

Eddie Trunk of 'That Metal Show' coming to Houston

Eddie Trunk talks to mikemcguff.com about his Houston tour date and Kings X

Eddie Trunk Houston
Eddie Trunk coming to Houston
Hard rock and heavy metal music fans know Eddie Trunk from That Metal Show on VH1 Classic, Trunk Nation on SiriusXM, Eddie Trunk Rocks on FM radio and Eddie Trunk's Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal volume 1 and 2, but did you know he is coming to Houston?

The man behind "Stump the Trunk" will be in Houston Saturday, February 8th, at the Concert Pub NORTH. This is part of a series of dates Trunk does around the country telling stories about his life in the rock music world.

Trunk talked to mikemcguff.com to give us more details. I was excited about this because I've been listening to Trunk on XM since 2007 or so.

Mike McGuff: How did you start doing club dates?
Eddie Trunk: I did a lot of Q&A and public speaking around my book tours. Never had an issue talking and people really loved the stories I told so it just grew from that. It's all very free form and off the cuff and loose. Sometimes I do them with Don (Jamieson) & Jim (Florentine) and also at times solo as Houston will be (Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson are Trunk's co-hosts on That Metal Show).

I hear a lot of Houston callers on your SiriusXM show, is that how you chose Houston as a performance date?
ET: I didn't choose Houston but I am thrilled to be coming there. I have an agent that books the dates and Concert Pub North expressed an interest, so that's how it came about. Just like any band that tours it really comes down to offers and interest and of course my schedule. But you are correct, I do hear a lot from Houston and Texas in general which is great.

In your new book Eddie Trunk's Essential Hard Rock & Heavy Metal VOL 2, you write a chapter on Houston band Kings X. After all of the acclaim, why didn't the band reach a wider audience?
ET: They were never really a commercial band and didn't fit in much with what was going on at the time image and sound wise. For all the things that people love the band about and the things that earned them a loyal audience, it also prevented them in some ways from going truly mass appeal and having big hits. But people in the know truly love them.

For more info on the show at the Concert Pub North click here.

KPRC 2 reporter Mary Benton to have surgery

Keep Mary Benton in your prayers

UPDATE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 02, 2014
Mary Benton returns to KPRC feeling 100%

Mary Benton
Mary Benton
I'm sure you've been wondering about the whereabouts of KPRC 2 reporter Mary Benton over the last few weeks. Well, the award winning veteran Houston reporter has a lot more on her mind than just the upcoming February 2014 TV sweeps period.

Due to complications that have caused anemia, Benton has been dealing with blood transfusions, infusions, medications and countless doctors appointments.

"Every day I felt exhausted and sick," Benton tells mikemcguff.com. "My blood level/hemoglobin was always extremely low. My doctors told me they were amazed that I managed to wake up and get to work every morning."

Benton's doctors warned she was jeopardizing her health because she was so determined to avoid surgery and get back to normal. The doctors eventually won and now Benton will soon be having surgery.

So in the four to six weeks she will be off the air recovering, Benton will have to just sit out and watch from the sidelines during some big events.

"This means I will miss February ratings and, as I mark my 20th anniversary with Channel 2 this year, I hate to be away from our viewers and important stories in our community," Benton told me. "I look forward to getting back on my feet and back to reporting for Channel 2."

Spoken like the true professional she is, but I think I can talk for the viewers in this case and just say, "Mary we are praying for you and get better. See you on TV again soon."

Dick John, former KHOU 11 news director, has died

Dick John hired the likes of Jessica Savitch, Linda Ellerbee, Ron Franklin at KHOU

Dick John KHOU
Dick John
Dick John, one of the people responsible for building the KHOU news department, has died at age 84. Former KHOU 11 reporter Fred Rhodes (1977 to 1979) tells me John died yesterday.

"He was known for his gentlemanly demeanor and for encouraging young reporters," Rhodes told me. "He was a kind soul and consummate pro."

John was KHOU's news director from 1968 to 75. He hired big names like Jessica Savitch, Linda Ellerbee, Ron Franklin and Dennis Murphy before their network days.

He also brought KPRC 2 anchor Bill Balleza to Houston.

"Dick hired me in June of 1973 to work at KHOU," Balleza told mikemcguff.com. "I had been reporting for KRON-TV in San Francisco and wanted to get back to Texas. He took me to lunch at the old Warwick Hotel where we sealed the deal. I recalled telling him that I planned to be in Houston no longer than two years. He reminded me a few months ago that two years can stretch into forty in the blink of an eye."

Before KHOU, John worked for ABC News from 1958 to 1959.

Recently from his North Richland Hills, Texas home, John was active on the KHOU-TV Alumni Facebook group where he shared old stories about television news.

John's son posted to the group that his dad died peacefully in his sleep yesterday afternoon.

If I hear about funeral arrangements, I will post them here.

If you were a friend of John's, you might want to check out his latest updates on his website.

Below is a video John made at KHOU in 1968.

KHOU 11 anchor shuffle 2014

KHOU 11's noon and 4pm anchors shift seats

Shern-Min Chow
A KHOU 11 viewer summed it up best this week when he posted on anchor Shern-Min Chow's Facebook page, "The question of the day: Will [Shern-Min Chow] be on the air at noon or 4 or some other time? Oh, the mystery of it all!!"

Viewers have noticed that the station's noon newscast with anchor Katherine Whaley and the 4pm show with anchor Shern-Min Chow have looked a little different over the last few weeks and now we know it has more to do than just funky holiday and vacation schedules.

Who knows if this has anything to do with channel 11's new owner Gannett, but Houston's CBS affiliate is having an anchor reshuffling.

Katherine Whaley
Four PM news anchor Chow confirmed to mikemcguff.com that she will now anchor the noon news and main anchor Lisa Hernandez will add 4pm newscast duties. Noon anchor Whaley's station web bio has been changed to only mention she does morning traffic. Any reference to her anchoring the 12pm news has been scrubbed.

The male anchor part of the noon and 4pm seem to remain the same. Both noon/morning anchor Ron Trevino and 4pm anchor Len Cannon appear to still be firmly in their seats, but main anchor Greg Hurst was on the 4pm as of yesterday.

Surely Gannett will be making more changes. Email me if you catch any.

For instance, I posted this video clip yesterday that shows the new Gannett ending on a KHOU newscast.

Anonymous commenters on the attack

Study finds most anonymous online comments to be uncivil

It's been an interesting few weeks around here concerning blog commenters. On my own blog, I've been called an idiot, a Nazi and those are just some of the nicer things.

Last week, I learned about the so-called Michael Berry Brigade in my comments section and was also personally blamed for 93.7 The Arrow KKRW becoming 93.7 The Beat KQBT. Remember Houston radio listeners, don't anger me or I might flip the format of your favorite station with a few keyboard strokes.

No one ever said online commenters were brainiacs? So just to be clear, I really do not have the power to change radio station formats. Changing television anchors? Now that's a different story...

One thing we do know is that commenters are mostly anonymous here and other online places. Now a University of Houston researcher has found that anonymity is key in empowering the name calling.

In the study, Virtuous or Vitriolic: The Effect of Anonymity on Civility in Online Newspaper Reader Comment Boards, UH assistant professor Arthur D. Santana found a significant correlation between anonymity and civility. Poring over thousands of online comments, Santana found that 53.3% of anonymous comments included language that was vulgar, racist, profane or hateful. However only 28.7% of non-anonymous comments were found to be uncivil. Sound the breaking news alert.

Can you imagine having to read thousands of newspaper site reader comments? Instead, I would have volunteered for the study on adult male reactions to Justin Bieber music if given a choice. Do you think I could become a Belieber?

"Anonymity has a long history in journalism dating back to the beginning of U.S. newspapers," Santana said in a release. "In the 1700s, Benjamin Franklin used the pseudonym Silence Dogood to get his opinion published after being denied several times with his real name. It has long been seen as a valuable way to express an opinion, however unpopular."

In today's politically correct world, where one unpopular comment could get you canned from your job, the tradition continues.

Santana, a former journalist at newspapers like the San Antonio Express-News, The Seattle Times and The Washington Post, says the "online disinhibition effect" is at play. The effect predicts when people's identity is hidden, their actions or words have no consequences, thus their inhibitions drop. So under the cloak of online anonymity, people are more likely to behave in ways that they ordinarily would not if their identity was intact.

So on my blog that means obsessing over KPRC 2 anchor Dominique Sachse in the comments section - even if the post is not about her. Although maybe you know someone in your office who does this openly in real life too.

"One of the benefits of online anonymity is that it allows people to express their views, uninhibited, especially if it is an unpopular opinion," Santana said. "It's when commenting descends into hateful language, threats or racism that the conversation breaks down and any benefits of constructive dialogue goes away."

A constructive dialogue doesn't seem to be on many Houston TV and newspaper online commenters' minds from what I've seen over the years.

Some of Santana's findings:
- Non-anonymous commenters were nearly three times as likely to post civil comments.
- 44% of non-anonymous commenters posted civil comments following news articles compared to 15% of anonymous commenters.
- Vexed with an overwhelming number of uncivil comments that threaten to undermine the value of their commenting forums, newspapers are increasingly disallowing anonymity by making readers sign in with their Facebook account; 48.9% of the 137 largest U.S. newspapers have disallowed anonymity in their commenting forums, 41.6% allow anonymity and 9.4% do not have forums.
- Comparing comments following a racialized topic and a non-racialized topic, Santana observed that comments that followed the racialized topic were significantly more likely to be uncivil.

"These findings should be of interest to those newspapers that allow anonymity and that have expressed frustration with rampant incivility and ad hominem attacks in their commenting forums," Santana said. "Particularly those that follow sensitive news topics."

The study mentions how news organizations like the Huffington Post hope banning anonymous commenting will allow more people to join the conversation.

"Incivility serves as a barrier," Santana said. "People don’t want to enter the fray when there are a bunch of bullies in the room. Why would you want to join a conversation when everyone is shouting at each other? It’s possible to be forceful, robust and emotional in your argument, but when even a small minority of people resort to hateful or even intimidating language, others are reluctant to join a conversation."

Read the study for yourself here.

February TV sweeps story ideas 2014

Don't waste time surfing for February TV sweeps story ideas, just come to mikemcguff.com & then take credit for them in the newsroom

The 2014 February sweeps period is just around the corner. Desperate for stories? Try these? Like I've said before, non-TV folks may gag, but your TV manager might give you a pat on the back if you bring these in. Irresistible!

Old bathtubs found to pose lead exposure risks for children
Laura Rudeseal was surprised to learn that her children, Kassidy and Trevor, had been exposed to lead from the bathtub in their home.

The Squatty Potty product test
Squatty Potty® is a carefully designed toilet stool that puts YOU in exactly the correct position for fast, easy elimination, and keeps ITSELF out of the way when not in use. Have an anchor test this out...it would be hilarious...maybe.

Prankster Uses People's Social Media Over Sharing to Freak Them Out
Have a reporter do this, but it takes the right person to make it work. And your reporter actually has to understand social media to pull it off. This 'prank' highlights real issues with Internet privacy.

College students use 'sugar daddy' website for tuition
With the rising cost of tuition, many college students are looking for ways to pay for school, and an unconventional trend is growing in Texas. While the concept isn't new, it's gaining popularity with college students in Texas. College girls, sugar daddies...the promo is writing itself.

Public Enemies: Social Media Is Fueling Gang Wars
Is this happening in your city? Have a social media producer start searching for examples in your town.

A look inside teens’ secret social media apps
Here is another example of scaring parents with social media. This story is a throw down TV sweeps classic by now. Call it one of the greatest hits. Before this...it was secret teen texting codes. Or maybe even teen sexting.

Is This the Face of Bigfoot? One Man’s Texas-Sized Claim [PHOTOS]
I've worked for a station that did a Bigfoot story during a sweeps period. Here is a Texas story about the big guy. Talk about big footing the competition in the ratings!

The World’s Best Bounty Hunter Is 4-Foot-11. Here’s How She Hunts
At 4'11" and just over 100 pounds, Michelle Gomez doesn’t look like the sort of person you’d hire to retrieve earth moving equipment stolen by a Peruvian crime family. Gomez, the proprietor of a one-woman operation in Lockhart, Texas, called Unlimited Recoveries, is one of the best skip tracers in the world.

Teen Who Injected Krokodil In Genitals Was From Houston, Mexican Officials Say
I mentioned Krokodil back in November as a possible story idea. Now reports say a Houston girl was using it. This drug is horrific enough to scare up audiences for sweeps as TV stations like to do. But the critics call it yellow journalism. Oh well, if you are losing in the Feb. book, who cares what the critics say...right?

UPDATE
Readers are sending in more since I posted.

The E-Cigarette Industry, Waiting to Exhale
All kinds of developments are happening in the E-Cigarette industry all across the United States. This can be a story on a local issue or the overall phenomenon. You might even want to focus on how good Jenny McCarthy looks in the blu eCigs commercial. Seriously, she looks great in that ad.

Remember, these can be re-used and recycled, just put them away in the drawer and pull them back out when you need them again.

Rod Rice stepping down from 88.7 KUHF

Rod Rice: "It’s been a pleasure playing a small role in the daily life of this wonderful city"

After 40 years behind a radio microphone, 12 total at Houston's NPR station, 88.7 KUHF Morning Edition news anchor Rod Rice is hanging up his headphones for the last time this Friday morning.

"When I first arrived at KUHF we were a newsroom of five people in a room smaller than our current KUHF main studio," Rice told mikemcguff.com. "Today we have more than twice the number of reporters and anchors, and a number of positions that didn't even exist or could have been imagined in 1997."

Rice started his broadcasting career in 1970 as a disc jockey at WPAM in Pottsvile, PA. It was news anchoring that led Rice to Houston at 740 KTRH in April of 1991 where he worked nights. In 1998, he moved to KUHF as a reporter. Rice returned to KTRH in 2000 to anchor the midday/afternoon shift. However, the call of public broadcasting brought him back to KUHF in 2003 where he has been ever since. He first started as the Houston host of All Things Considered, later moving to the news anchor role for Morning Edition where he has remained till this day.

According to his bio, Rice has been honored by several organizations for excellence in journalism, including a regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio and Television News Director’s Association.

As the years have gone by, Rice says he has seen thousands of radio jobs disappear after the industry's dance with deregulation and conglomeration.

"Many newsrooms have disappeared completely as the large broadcasting companies, that even do newscasts, use people from one station to do the newscast at another station," Rice lamented. "These stations don’t even have to be in same state, so the quality of the news that’s reported cannot be as good as it was when a local reporter cultivated sources and relationships and wrote with a community knowledge that a stranger, no matter how good, can have."

So what's next for Rice? Well one thing for sure, not an early wake up call in the foreseeable future.

"Do you know how many movies and TV shows are on Netflix and Hulu," Rice asked. "Seriously, I have no firm plans except I won’t be getting up at 3am! Might I end-up on another payroll? I won’t say never, but not right away for sure."

“Rod has been one of the most respected news radio anchors in Houston for more than 20 years and we've been lucky to have him at KUHF,"  88.7 news director Jack Williams told me. "He’ll be missed, but we’re excited for him as he begins what will be a very active retirement.”

You'll be able to hear Rice's last broadcast this Friday from 5 to 9am on 88.7 KUHF. The station says it's still searching for Rice's replacement.

"It’s been a pleasure playing a small role in the daily life of this wonderful city," Rice said.

The Bert Show joins 102.9 NOW KDMX mornings

Bert Weiss, former Kidd Kraddick producer and sidekick, returns to Dallas radio on 102.9 NOW KDMX FM

The Bert Show 102.9 NOW
The Bert Show cast
102.9 NOW (KDMX FM) announced today that The Bert Show will join the station as its new morning show, airing weekdays from 5-9:00 a.m. C.T. The Bert Show will launch on 102.9 NOW on Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

The Bert Show is a syndicated program powered by YEA Networks, Kidd Kraddick’s broadcasting company, and features host, Bert Weiss, co-hosts Jeff Dauler, Kristin Klingshirn and a variety of additional on air characters.

The Bert Show will entertain listeners in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex with authentic, lifestyle conversations, pop culture gossip, news, A-list celebrity guests and continued hit music. Tara, 102.9 NOW’s previous morning show host, will keep The Bert Show connected to the Metroplex with live traffic, weather and entertainment updates.

The addition of The Bert Show is the latest in a series of changes in the market and reinforces Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Dallas’ commitment to providing North Texas with all-star programming lineups on all of its stations.

“We are thrilled to welcome The Bert Show to the Clear Channel DFW family,” said Deidre Richter, President, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Dallas / Ft Worth. “102.9 NOW has seen major growth in the past year, and addition of The Bert Show will only add to the station’s success. We know this will be a win for both listeners and advertisers alike.”

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to be back on in the Metroplex! I fell in love with Dallas-Ft. Worth when I was on Kidd’s show,” said Weiss. “I can’t wait to get started and connect with the area again.”

Houston pastry chef to star on TLC's 'Bakery Boss'

Drew’s Pastry Place in Northwest Houston goes head-to-head with “Cake Boss” reality TV star Buddy Valastro on TLC show Bakery Boss

Drew Rogers, Cake Boss Buddy Valastro and Carla Rogers
Drew Rogers, Cake Boss Buddy Valastro and Carla Rogers
A Houston pastry chef is about to see what he's worth as he goes up against Cake Boss and reality TV star Buddy Valastro on TLC's Bakery Boss (Mondays, 9pm CST).

At age 40, Andrew “Drew” Rogers stopped his direct mail marketing business and enrolled at the Culinary Institute LeNotre in Houston to start a new career.

“Culinary school was rigorous – 46 weeks, four nights a week from 5 to 11 p.m.," Rogers said in a statement. "But it was my passion."

After working as an assistant pastry chef for Master Chef Fritz Gitschner at the Houston Country Club for a few years, Rogers opened Drew’s Pastry Place, in the Champions/Cy Fair area. One of Rogers' biggest investors was his own mother. Joan Rogers retired from Compaq Computer/HP after 18 years and invested her entire 401-K retirement into her son’s second career.

“I’ve put my heart and soul into this place, not to mention mine and my family’s savings," Rogers added. "It’s got to succeed."

Now Rogers is getting schooled by Valastro whose TV show helps fledgling family-owned bakeries like Drew’s step up their business.

“Buddy threw me some hard balls from the start and really challenged me on how I run my business and interact with my family, who are not only investors, but co-workers,” said Rogers, who turned his passion for making Italian pastries into a second career in 2005. “Buddy may have riled me at times, but in the end, I think that’s what brought me to come up with Cannoli Cupcakes, a brand new signature dessert idea."

Here's some insider info on the show...Valastro gave Rogers high marks for his culinary prowess – 9 out of 10 for his cannoli, rainbow cookies and tiramisu. But the Cake Boss zeroed in on where Rogers has had blinders on. For one, how he should be more strategic in his dessert and other food offerings and how to best merchandise his shop to attract the local clientele.

“Buddy helped bring the conversation to a trigger point, spurring Drew’s 'Aha!' moment with regard to creating a signature cupcake that’s a win-win,” said Carla, his wife of 23 years. “The ‘Bakery Boss’ pushed hard, but he finally got Drew see his business in a different light.”

For those Houston media insiders, Carla is a Regional Account Manager at CBS Radio Houston.

The Rogers' Houston episode of the Bakery Boss airs Monday (1/20/2014) at 9pm on TLC.

If you want to check the shop out for yourself, Drew’s Pastry Place (10300 Louetta Road) offers bagels from New York, specially blended coffee recipes, wide assortments of brightly colored pastries, desserts (including his signature Italian cream cake, Cannoli, cheesecake, Italian cookies, créme brulee) and more. Michael Berry says show will not hurt his wife's Texas Secretary of State role

Michael Berry: "Only angry libtard supposed feminists would ever blame her for what someone else says"

Governor Rick Perry swears in Nandita Berry
as the 109th Texas Secretary of State
Governor Rick Perry appointed and swore in Nandita Berry as the 109th Texas Secretary of State. So, why am I covering this on a Houston media blog?

Notice the last name? That's right, Nandita Berry is the wife of 740 KTRH/syndicated conservative talker and Redneck Country Club owner Michael Berry.

According to the state, the duties of the office of the Texas Secretary of State are wide-ranging and include serving as the chief election officer for the state, the governor’s liaison on border and Mexican affairs, and Texas’ chief protocol officer for state and international matters. Additionally, the office manages the business and public filings for Texas.

So I had to ask the previously controversial Michael Berry, will he have to watch what he says on the radio now that his wife is in politics?

"We're two different people," Michael Berry told mikemcguff.com. "She's the Secretary of State, I'm the Czar of Talk Radio. Only angry libtard supposed feminists would ever blame her for what someone else says."

Secretary Berry is the first Indian-American to hold the office and a graduate of the University of Houston and the UH Law Center. Prior to holding office, she was senior counsel at Locke Lord LLP in Houston.

Gov. Perry appointed Former Texas Secretary of State John Steen to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Damali Keith: New Fox 26 KRIV weekend morning reporter & other stuff

Damali Keith is first ever Fox 26 KRIV weekend morning reporter plus other news

Damali Keith
Damali Keith
Big changes have already hit Houston TV in 2014. Most notably new hour long weekend newscasts for KTRK abc13 and KHOU.

Fox 26 KRIV is also making an addition to weekend newscasts too. It's been confirmed to me that Damali Keith, who has recently been filling in for weekend morning anchor Sally MacDonald while she was on maternity leave, is staying with weekend mornings as a reporter.

I'm told this is the first time that Fox 26 has ever had a weekend morning reporter on duty. Other stations like KTRK and KPRC 2 have scheduled a person on these shifts over the years, but not KRIV.

I mentioned MacDonald is back in the anchor chair from newborn duty and so is KTRK abc13 weekend morning anchor Elissa Rivas by the way.

Staying with a morning theme, I've also got word that since Rivas' husband, anchor Chris Stipes, moved to Fox 26 weekend nights, a substitute has appeared in his old morning chair along side Rita Garcia. It appears that FOX 26 KRIV Traffic Authority Michelle Merhar has been doing both traffic and morning anchoring in the 4am hour during the week.

As I reported a few weeks ago, Fox 26 has already made some other changes with reporter staff schedules.

Notice anymore changes? What does the fox say? That's right, contact McGuff.
