Fmr. Fox 26 anchor Jocelyn Lane shares new assignment

Former Fox 26 KRIV anchor, reporter and managing editor Jocelyn Lane shared some cool photos with us of her interview experiences with Jerry Lewis.

Any post about Lewis is perfect for this time of year with the MDA Telethon coming up (even though Lewis is no longer apart of it.)

"The first was taken when I shot an interview and promos in Las Vegas with Jerry Lewis in 1981, when I was a news anchor in Albany, New York and co-hosted of the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon there," Lane told mikemcguff.com. "The second was taken [in early August], when I interviewed Lewis (who is now 86) in Nashville for Inside Edition."

Lane tells me Lewis is directing his first stage production, The Nutty Professor, in Nashville. He hopes to take it to Broadway.

"It was great to see him again, although, of course, he didn't remember me," Lane said. "He was as funny and cantankerous as ever."

Lane by the way is a freelance network news producer and still lives in Houston. She was at KRIV for nearly 20 years.

Belo launches iPad weather app

TV station company Belo Corp., which owns Texas stations WFAA Dallas/Fort Worth, KHOU Houston, KENS San Antonio and KVUE Austin, just launched a new free weather iPad app.

Called WeatherCaster, the app offers:

- 10 layers of nationwide weather data
- Forecasting features
- Weather alerts
- Animated radars
- Interactive maps
- Customizable forecast dashboards
- Watches and warnings
- Community photo galleries in social setting
- Weather glossary with over 200 weather terms

I actually tracked Hurricane Isaac using the app's weather data. One thing I thought really stood out was the way the hourly forecast is presented. It uses a scrolling bar that animates the temperature...etc. as you move it. There is also a lot of customization available.

The one thing I wish I could change is the city. For example, my wife is travelling and I would like to be able to check out the weather for where she is.

If you live in one of the Belo TV markets, then your app will be branded with that station's look. Your local Belo station will also contribute forecasts, news and video.

"The app satisfies the lifestyle needs of consumers nationwide with the ability to present customizable national and hyper-local weather information," said Joe Weir, Belo's vice president/Digital. "Belo provides audiences news and information that makes their lives easier. WeatherCaster is another way to offer convenience to a national audience on the go."

When I went to download the app, I noticed an iPhone app that was branded as the KVUE WeatherCaster. So maybe that is a sign that the other Belo stations will follow.

KHOU's Dr. Neil Frank casts long shadow

Photobucket

No doubt Dr. Neil Frank is a great asset to KHOU 11. When storms in the Gulf of Mexico are brewing, the former Houston Belo station chief meteorologist is always in the reserves, ready to come back and lend his expertise from his years as the director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Florida.

But there has been talk in the Houston TV community as Hurricane Isaac makes landfall...what do current KHOU 11 meteorologists Gene Norman, David Paul, Mario Gomez and Chita Johnson think of the above KHOU Facebook graphic while they're tracking the storm too?

Just so the current mets don't feel left out, I will promote the KHOU 11 weather team's big schedule change coming in September that I first broke a few weeks ago.

Stephen Dean resigns from WSYX 6 in Columbus

In a surprise move, former KPRC 2 investigative reporter Stephen Dean has submitted his resignation from the same job at WSYX 6 in Columbus, Ohio.

You might remember the Peabody Award-winning reporter just started with the Sinclair station last last May.

"It's not workable for me," Dean told mikemcguff.com Friday afternoon by phone. "Everyone who has worked with me knows when it comes to journalistic ethics, I don't
bend."

This was a homecoming job for Dean because both he and his wife have family in Ohio.
He sounded very disappointed because he really wanted this to work out

When I pressed Dean for his reason for leaving, he said there was not a particular instance, but a pattern that began in his first days there.

"My ethics have always been completely unbendable, when I feel I cannot do my job with those ethics, then I can't do my job at that station," Dean explained to me.

Dean did say that his first two months at WSYX exceeded his wildest dreams. He was proud of the fact he had put more hidden camera stories on air than he says had been produced for that market in years.

Here is one of the stories I could find online he was particularly excited about.

Dean was Houston bound when he talked to me. His family is still here and trying to sell their house.

"When I look in the mirror tomorrow morning, I will be satisfied," Dean told me.

I called the WSYX creative services director/promotions manager for comment Friday afternoon, but did not hear back from him.

Local TV tops with voters poll says

I received a press release from the folks behind the National USC Annenberg-Los Angeles Times Poll which shows local television news rules with voters. The poll says Americans turn to local TV over national outlets for daily news and 25% of voters report getting their news from Facebook which is a larger daily reach than most cable news networks!

HERE IS THE RELEASE:

Even as online news sources make inroads, voters still rely on local television for their daily news more than any other news source, according to a national survey released on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

More than half of voters — 58 percent — said they watch local television news broadcasts daily, with older Americans far more likely than younger voters to rely on television for their news, according to results from the USC Annenberg-Los Angeles Times Poll on Politics and the Press.

Thirty-nine percent of voters said they read their local newspaper in print or online each day, according to the poll.

Voters were less likely to follow national news sources on a daily basis: 35 percent of voters said they watch the national nightly network news each day and 16 percent said they read a national newspaper like USA Today, the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times daily, either in print or online.

"There's no question that the political news universe is changing — just not quite as quickly as we thought," said Dan Schnur, director of the Unruh Institute of Politics at USC. "The gap between older voters and the younger smartphone generation is immense. But even in an Internet and social networking world, when it comes to political news and information, local television is still king."

For radio news, voters were more likely to tune into National Public Radio on a daily basis (19%) than conservative talk shows like the Rush Limbaugh Show (12%).

For political opinions, voters were most likely to first turn to television (55%) over online sources (35%) or a print newspaper (14%).

One in four voters reported getting their news on a daily basis from Facebook – giving the social networking site a larger direct daily reach than most cable news networks.

Comparatively, 19 percent of voters said they get news on a daily basis directly from MSNBC, 21 percent tuned into CNN and 33 percent sought news from Fox News.

Younger voters were most likely to rely on Facebook for their news: More than half of voters aged 18 to 29 said they log onto the website for their daily news and information, the poll showed.

Of those who rely on Facebook for daily news, 58 percent said it was mostly news they had already seen or heard about, and 29 percent said it was new information to them.

"These findings underscore the need for well-trained journalists at every level," says Geoffrey Cowan, USC University Professor and director of USC Annenberg's Center on Communication Leadership & Policy. "For voters, local television and newspapers remain the top source for information. In addition, our questions document the growing use of digital and social media as a source for breaking news and analysis, especially among younger voters."

YOUNGER VOTERS MORE LIKELY TO GET NEWS ON SMARTPHONES

The USC Annenberg-Los Angeles Times Poll on Politics and the Press also showed the way voters consume news has much to do with their age.

Older voters were much more likely to rely on television for their news: 70 percent of voters over 49 years old said they got most of their news from TV, compared to just 50 percent of 18-to-49 year olds.

But younger voters were more likely to pick up a tablet or smartphone to get their news: 20 percent of 18-to-49 year olds said they get most of their news on these mobile devices, compared to just 3 percent of voters over 49 years old.

Younger voters, aged 18 to 49, were also three times more likely to use Facebook as a daily news source and twice as likely to use blogs or news aggregators than voters over 49 years old.

Latinos were the most likely of any racial group to get most of their news on a smartphone or tablet (21%), compared to 16 percent of blacks and 10 percent of whites who get their news the same way.

A LIBERAL MEDIA BIAS?

A plurality of voters polled believes the news media skews liberal, although this belief was largely split along party lines.

Republicans were more concentrated in the belief that news operates with ideological bias, the poll showed.

Forty percent of voters said the media is too liberal, 29 percent said it was ideologically balanced and 13 percent thought the news media skewed conservative.

Among Republicans, 70 percent said the media is too liberal, while just 20 percent of Democrats thought the media was too conservative.

Forty-seven percent of Republicans and 50 percent of conservatives watch Fox News on a daily basis, while just 30 percent of Democrats and 31 percent of liberals watch MSNBC daily, the poll showed.

“Republicans and conservatives are coalesced around watching Fox News much more than Democrats and liberals watch MSNBC,” said David Kanevsky, research director of American Viewpoint, a Republican polling firm.

Forty-four percent of Democrats described the media as ideologically balanced, compared to just 16 percent of Republicans.

“Democratic voters are more trusting of the vast majority of news media sources than are Republicans,” said Drew Lieberman, vice president at Democratic polling firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner. “As a result, they tend to consume more news, and so the more media you consume, the more likely you are to vote for President Obama."

LOCAL NEWS MOST TRUSTED

Despite those findings, 64 percent of voters agreed with the statement that “the news media provides me with useful and important information,” compared to 29 percent who thought the news media provided irrelevant and unimportant information.

Voters overwhelmingly said they look for news and headlines that don’t have a particular point of view (52%), and just 19 percent said they look for sources that share their political point of view.

Younger voters were far more trusting of news sources than were older voters. Voters ages 18 to 49 gave higher scores to nearly every news medium – except for Fox News and conservative talk radio – than voters older than 49 years old.

Local TV news also came out on top as the most trustworthy source of news, earning the highest ranking from voters among the various mediums.

On a scale of 0 (no trust) to 10 (completely trust), voters gave local TV news a mean score of 6.6.

Local newspapers earned a mean score of 6.2, and national newspapers like USA Today, the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times earned a 6.0 mean score.

Democrats gave higher scores to nearly every news source – except for Fox News and conservative talk radio – than did Republicans. Democrats and Republicans agreed on Facebook, with both voter groups giving the website a mean score of 3.

The poll surveyed 1,009 registered voters nationwide from August 13-19 with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points.

The USC Annenberg-Los Angeles Times Poll on Politics and the Press is a project of the Center on Communication Leadership & Policy at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. The poll was conducted on behalf of USC and the Los Angeles Times by Republican polling firm American Viewpoint and Democratic polling firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner.

KPRC's Mark Boyle covers NYC shooting while on vacation

Courtesy markboyle instagram

I'm sure when KPRC 2 morning reporter Mark Boyle landed in New York City last weekend he thought he could get in some rest and relaxation.

Through Twitter we saw Boyle:
- Fly into LaGuardia Airport
- Have dinner with his mom at Michael Jordan's
- Enjoy dessert
- Take in a Broadway show
- Meet with Friends

Then after the Empire State Building shootout where two were left dead...he's on the air in Houston doing a live shot from New York City.

A reporter's work is never done.

KPRC 2's Iain Page out; Keith Garvin in?

UPDATE 2/6/2013: TVNewsCheck reports Iain Page has been named co-anchor of Fox O&O WTXF Philadelphia's Fox 29 News at 5 p.m. He will also report.

Just as KPRC 2 anchor Iain Page announced on Facebook  he was going on vacation (it was announced in all caps like a TV anchor's script BTW), the word is around town that he's leaving the station soon to pursue other opportunities.

Page came to Houston in October 2010 from the Golf Channel. He first did weekends and then replaced METRO's Jerome Gray on the 4pm anchor desk. Before that Page was at ESPN.

Looking back at my old post, I had forgotten that Page also has a law degree. So does KPRC weekend anchor Irika Sargent.

Page's last day will most likely be August 31st.

Here is another interesting thing about Page's departure. Fox 26 KRIV's Isiah Carey AKA The Insite is reporting that recently departed KTVT 11 DFW anchor Keith Garvin could be coming to KPRC.

After all, Garvin did tell ace Dallas media blogger Ed Bark he already had another job lined up - but that is all he would say at the time.

Garvin, who grew up in nearby Bryan-College Station, most famously worked as an ABC News correspondent. It just so happens that KPRC parent company Post-Newsweek is now run by Emily Bar who recently ran KTRK 13 sister ABC owned station WLS in Chicago.

Even closer to home, new KPRC managers Chris Best and Aaron Wische both worked at KTVT.

Am I simply connecting the dots or grasping at straws here? Hey, anything is possible.

UPDATE
Keith Garvin starts at KPRC next week and will be the 4pm anchor and night reporter.

CultureMap opening in Dallas

In 2009, CultureMap opened its digital doors in Houston and now the site is moving to Dallas in September. It has already expanded to Austin.

Many of the folks behind CultureMap are big names in Houston journalism. The site has reportedly raised a lot of cash and found a TV partner by recently teaming up with KHOU 11. Recently however, the most notable news from CultureMap, in my opinion, was hiring the former publisher of O, The Oprah Magazine.

Here is who will be leading the new DFW effort:

Phyllis Cole - Senior Vice President and General Manager
Most recently Cole served as Vice President of National Sales at Blue Calypso, a patented mobile social marketing and advertising platform. Cole also has served in strategic leadership roles at D Magazine, Childrenʼs Medical Center of Dallas and WSJ.com.

Jessica Baldwin - Community and sponsor relations efforts/local strategic marketing initiatives
Baldwin, an expert event marketer who held a similar position at D Magazine, has a talent for executing successful integrated marketing campaigns and generating revenue.

Jennifer Chininis - Editor in Chief
Chininis spent more than 10 years at D Magazine, where she held key positions such as online Editorial Director, Executive Editor of special interest publications and Managing Editor. An expert in digital media, Chininis also helped launch Central Marketʼs e-commerce site and iPhone app. She was also a key player in rebuilding centralmarket.com prior to joining CultureMap.

Teresa Gubbins - Senior Editor
Restaurant reporter and food critic Gubbins has held staff positions at the Dallas Morning News and Pegasus News, as well as freelance roles for D Magazine and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Claire St. Amant - Managing Editor
St. Amant was recently honored by Editor and Publisher as one of the top 25 newspaper journalists under 35. The former Peace Corps volunteer and People Newspapers Assistant Managing Editor has written for the Wall Street Journal, Houston Chronicle and D Magazine.

Rachael Abrams - Associate Editor
Abrams, a culinary school grad, covers the society beat for CultureMap Dallas. The former Huffington Post blogger and an assistant editor at PaperCity also founded YMAP, the Young Jewish Altruist Movement of Dallas.

“Hiring a stellar team in Dallas ensures that CultureMap serves the city with the same creativity and fervor as our teams in Houston and Austin,” Alyce C. Alston, Chairman and CEO of CultureMap, LLC said in a statement. “Dallas is teeming with sophistication and style, but the city needs a clear and discerning voice to make sense of all the noise. CultureMap is that voice and we have the team to deliver it. Our rich content and userfriendly experience, combined with first-rate local intelligence, will revolutionize the way users discover their community.”

KXAS 5' David Finfrock cuts down; Rick Mitchell steps in

NBC 5 / KXAS-TV today announced that Chief Meteorologist David Finfrock has signed a long-term agreement with NBC 5. Additionally, Finfrock said he will retire at the agreement's end, after a more than 40-year career with the station.

NBC 5 also announced that meteorologist Rick Mitchell will join NBC 5 News at 10 p.m. and NBC 5 First at Four (4 p.m.), Monday-Friday. Finfrock will continue to forecast during NBC 5 News at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., weekdays. Meteorologist Grant Johnston will transition to NBC 5 Today each weekday morning from 5-7 a.m. while Meteorologist Samantha Davies will continue to forecast weather from 4:30-5:00 a.m., each weekday. NBC 5 Meteorologist Remeisha Shade will remain doing the weekend morning newscasts.

"I was fresh out of college when Harold Taft hired me, and I never dreamed I'd spend my entire career at one television station," said Finfrock. "I'm not ready to leave yet, but I've been thinking about retirement for several years, and I'm pleased this agreement offers me the opportunity to finish my career right where it began – with the first television station in Texas."

Finfrock is only NBC 5's second chief meteorologist in the station's 64-year history. After receiving his meteorology degree from Texas A&M University in 1975, he joined KXAS-TV and was mentored by legendary North Texas meteorologist, Harold Taft. Finfrock was named chief meteorologist in 1991.

"NBC 5 takes great pride in bringing viewers the area's best weather coverage to prepare them for what lies ahead," said Susan Tully, NBC 5 Vice President of News. "David's experience and dedication to accurate forecasting is unparalleled in North Texas television. The fact that he will be here to guide us through the coming transition is invaluable."

"We're incredibly fortunate to add Rick Mitchell, a chief meteorologist from Oklahoma City, to an expert team that includes Grant, Samantha, Remeisha and me," said Finfrock. "I've always insisted that everyone we hire be a professional meteorologist, and you won't find a team more professional than this anywhere."

Mitchell has been chief meteorologist at KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City, OK, since 1994. Previously, he forecasted weather at WOI-TV in Des Moines, IA, and Accu-Weather, in State College, PA. He has been recognized for his severe weather forecasting experiences from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press. Mitchell's team of meteorologists at KOCO-TV was recognized by then Oklahoma governor, Frank Keating, for their exceptional work covering tornados in May 1999. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from the University of Nebraska.

Mitchell said, "I am thrilled to have this opportunity to be on the air each weekday at 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. The combination of the rich history of KXAS-TV, and the chance to be part of their wonderful weather team makes this a dream job for me. While I've loved my time in Oklahoma City, I look forward to making new friends, and facing new challenges in Texas."

Finfrock and Mitchell will work together transitioning responsibilities for the NBC 5 News at 10 p.m. and NBC 5 First at Four in the coming weeks.

Johnston will assume his weekday morning assignment on NBC 5 News Today immediately.

Johnston joined NBC 5 in 2010 and has appeared primarily on weekend evening newscasts, but recently filled in on NBC 5 Today from 5-7 a.m. weekdays. He came to NBC 5 from KFOR-TV, in Oklahoma City, OK. Johnston graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Atmospheric Science and was recognized for his undergraduate research on hurricanes and El Nino.

NBC 5 is in the process of locating a meteorologist to assume responsibilities for weekend evening newscasts.

KTRK 13's Greg Bailey signs off WCNC Charlotte

Future KTRK 13 sports director Greg Bailey signed off from Charlotte, North Carolina's WCNC 36 last Friday after five years there (VIDEO ABOVE).

"I’m thrilled to come home to Texas and join the team at KTRK," Bailey told mikemcguff.com last month. "I look forward to working alongside Bob Allen and the great group he’s assembled in the sports office."

As I wrote before, Bailey will replace Bob Allen. The station says Allen will remain on staff as Sports Director Emeritus until his retirement at the end of the year. Allen has been with the Houston owned ABC station since 1974.

Chron.com to get 'dramatic facelift' from Houston Chronicle

Here we go again. Looks like the Houston Chronicle is giving chron.com a big makeover. A little botox there, hair dye over there, PHP scripting tweaks up there:

"We gave some of Houston's business and journalism communities a sneak peek at the all new Chron.com in late June. Now, we are ready to show all of Houston ... and the rest of the world.

In the next few days, Chron.com will undergo a dramatic facelift. From a new a logo and color scheme to a simpler layout and more relevant content of interest to Houston, this change will surely get Houston talking."

If you're like me and was not offered a sneak peek of the new site, then at least you know where your importance ranks. However you might be getting a sneak peek of the website's new logo on its Twitter page. If so, I must thank the newspaper for offering us plebeians a small taste of the great things to come.

Because of my Houston Tweets page, I've also noticed Chron employees talking about strategic plan meetings too (possibly about the big change).

They are tweeting away with hashtags like #HoustonNumber1 and #WeAreHouston. Maybe that's a coincidence, or maybe those hashtags integrate into the new chron.com like #hounews has in the current one.

The suspense, the suspense! It's almost like we are living Gay Talese's The Kingdom and the Power.

1560 The Game KGOW changes to Yahoo! Sports Radio and more

Just when you thought Roger Clemens returning to baseball with the Sugar Land Skeeters was going to be the big sports news of the day, hold onto your bat!

Turns out sports radio is making waves too. KGOW has flipped its image from 1560 The Game to Yahoo! Sports Radio 1560. I guess no real surprise there since owner Gow Broadcasting owns Yahoo! Sports Radio.

Also, Radio Insight reports that Gow has formally announced its takeover of 97.5 KFNC for $5.05 Million. ESPN 97.5 used to be owned by Cumulus.

Then Houston Media Watch tweeted me that KPRC 2 sports guy Adam Clanton and comedian John Wessling will be the new afternoon sports show on 1560 KGOW. Radio Insight adds they will be in the 3 to 7pm shift.

UPDATE 3/15/2013
Adam Clanton joins SportsTalk 790 KBME

I emailed KPRC 2 to see if Clanton will still keep his workload there while taking on the new radio duties. That's a lot of work, just ask David Nuno who also works for both Yahoo! Sports Radio and KTRK 13.

UPDATE 2 5:50pm: KPRC 2 confirms that Clanton is leaving the Houston NBC affiliate and will work at Yahoo! Sports Radio 1560 KGOW full time.

UPDATE: Have not heard back from KPRC yet, but am hearing that sports guy Adam Clanton will leave KPRC 2 to work afternoons at Yahoo! Sports Radio 1560 KGOW.

Tom Koch & Melanie Lawson hit 30 years at KTRK

It's the year of 30 in the Houston television market. First we had KHOU 11's Ron Trevino and KTRK 13's Don Kobos hit the big 3-0 at their respective stations.

Now a reader points out that KTRK anchors Tom Koch and Melanie Lawson both hit their 30th anniversaries with the ABC owned station in the past two weeks will hit their 30th anniversaries with the ABC owned station.

Koch's anniversary was August 10th, Lawson's August 14th. CORRECTION: Turns out neither anchor has hit the actual anniversary date yet, in fact, both started on the same day. I couldn't find any information about the anniversaries on abc13's website, but did find mentions on its Facebook account. The station posted on the above crossed out dates that the anchors celebrated their 30th anniversaries, but that must have been the day they received their Disney 30th swag. The actual start date for both Koch and Lawson was September 13, 1982.

According to his bio, Koch joined KTRK in 1982 as a reporter for 13 Eyewitness News. In 1987, in addition to his reporting duties, he became the morning anchor for 13 Eyewitness News at 7am which has obviously expanded over the years and been very dominant in the ratings.

According to her bio, Lawson first started as a full-time general assignments reporter and later became the co-anchor of Live at 5 and Channel 13's midday show. She also hosts a weekly Community Affairs program called Crossroads.

Many Houston TV stations have newsrooms that have as much employee foot traffic heading out the door as exits at Minute Maid Park right now (well maybe the ball park doesn't have that many people coming back in so it is a bad analogy this season).

Considering in the past two months we have three people at KTRK arriving at 30 years says something about why that station does so well in the ratings.

Congrats to Tom and Melanie, two great anchors who are just as nice off the air as they are everyday behind the anchor desks.

The Daily Buzz grabs Morgahn Miller from KIAH 39 NewsFix

KIAH 39 NewsFix News Content Coordinator Morgahn Miller jumps from behind the scenes to on air for nationally syndicated The Daily Buzz. I've covered some big TV market jumps here before, but this one might beat them all.

Miller is the social media producer for the show. She says the show really does listen to the audience.

"I give viewers a heads up on whats going on online (youtube, yahoo, twitter, facebook, etc)," Miller told mikemcguff.com. "I'm the liason between viewers and the show to make sure there voices are heard."

And being all about social media, soon Miller will also host an online show called Morgahn In The Morning that will highlight web trends.

"I was told I had to work in Podunk, USA for a year before being able to succeed on camera," Miller told me. "I didn't listen. Now I'm on a national morning television show. Make your own rules"

Miller is not the only former Houston TV staffer who now works at Orlando, Florida based The Daily Buzz. Former 39 KIAH news director KyAnn Lewis and KPRC 2 promotions producer JL Watkins are also with the show.

And we can't forget the other former Houstonian (Kingwood resident too) Lisa Spooner. Spooner joined TDB from FOX 4 WFTX Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Naples. You might recognize Spooner as Miss Texas 2002 in the Miss America Pageant.

You can watch The Daily Buzz in Houston on KUBE 57 from 6 to 7am. To see other city listings, click here.

KHOU 11 weather team shake up

I found out last week there are some big changes coming to the KHOU 11 weather team just in time for the height of hurricane season.

Chita Johnson moves from the noon and 4pm shows to the mornings (still will do noon).
David Paul moves from mornings to the 4 and 5 pm shows.
Gene Norman gives the 5pm to Paul and will handle the 6 and 10pm shows.
Mario Gomez will still handle the weekend shows.

Out of the changed schedules, David Paul has been in the affected shift the longest. According to his bio, Paul has been at the Houston Belo station since 1996. Gene Norman joined KHOU in 2008. Chita Johnson came to Houston in 2011.

Now I am no forecaster obviously (there is no degree from Mississippi State University on my wall), but I always figured Chita Johnson would end up on a morning show either at KHOU or somewhere else. Her bubbly personality fits perfectly with mornings.

A KHOU 11 spokesperson told me the new weather schedules go in effect September 3rd.

Zen Master Miao Tsan comes to Houston

Here is a release that is perfect for the stressed out Houston media types - remember to take a minute and relax/breathe:

Zen Master Miao Tsan, Abbot of Vairocana Zen Monastery and international lecturer and author, returns to Houston September 17 - 23 to launch his latest book, Intrinsic Awakened Nature (Bright Sky Press, Sept. 2012), which explores how many Western and Eastern religions share common principles despite the distinct ways in which they spread their teachings. He will present with such preeminent Western lecturers and educators as Episcopal priest and Jungian analyst J. Pittman McGehee D.D., and give public dialogues, dharma talks, workshops and programs at the Jung Center of Houston, Rothko Chapel, Memorial Hermann Hospital and C.T. Bauer College of Business University of Houston, among other Houston-area venues.

Venerable Master Miao Tsan’s multidisciplinary programs, free and open to the public, will include signings of Intrinsic Awakened Nature. His book provides important perspectives on the similarities in Western and Eastern pursuit of eternity, happiness and the ability to understand the meaning of life. In this new volume in a series of contemporary Zen studies, Master Miao Tsan shows readers a clear path to understanding the most important aspect of any spiritual teaching: At the source of any sound religion or ideology lies the one and only Universal Truth. While the superficial differences between religions have perplexed thinkers for centuries and left many modern people conflicted about which religion or ideology most deserves their loyalty, beneath their religious, linguistic and cultural differences lies a shared core value.

For additional information or to RSVP to any of the programs, please contact Jennifer Farmer, (281) 589-0810 or jfarmer@masterword.com.

* Full Calendar of Events/Houston Below
Zen Master Miao Tsan - Calendar of Events/Houston
September 17 – 23, 2012
When: Monday, September 17, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Where: University of Texas Health Science Center, 6431 Fannin St.,
Rm. JJL 400 - Houston 77030
Program: "Master Your Living and Dying” - Lecture by Venerable Master Miao Tsan
Host: Alejandro Chaoul, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at the Integrative Medicine Program in the Department of General Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Associate faculty at the McGovern Center for the Humanities and Ethics. Lunch will be available for the first 100 in attendance.
Although hospitals focus on healing, health care professionals are often called to serve patients facing death. Venerable Master Miao Tsan explains and illustrates how utilizing the Buddhist concept of impermanence can enable medical personnel to acknowledge that death is not a failure, but rather, the inevitable end of the physical body and the suffering inherent in each stage of life. Acceptance of this point of view opens the door for real compassion and loving kindness and provides deeper connection between patients and the medical community, greater peace for the dying, and a path to assuage the grief of patients’ families and loved ones.

When: Wednesday, September 19, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Where: Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue, Great Hall (Downtown)
Program: Zen Master Miao Tsan and J. Pittman McGehee, D.D., a noted Episcopal priest, Jungian analyst, author and lecturer will give their thoughts and definitions of the “Paradox of Love”. Is the Buddhist concept of compassion the same as the Western definition of love? What is the role of detachment? Is it a higher form of love than the more possessive Western romantic tradition? Does personal attachment bring suffering and can realization of our true essence transform it into happiness and universal and unconditional caring for all beings? Enlightening listeners with the wisdom of many traditions, these two masters will provide new insights on the most complex emotion.

Q&A and book signings of Intrinsic Awakened Nature (Venerable Master Miao Tsan) and The Paradox of Love (The Very Reverend J. Pittman McGehee) to follow.

When: Thursday, September 20, 6:30 p.m.
Where: C.T. Bauer College of Business University of Houston – Elizabeth D. Rockwell Pavilion - MD Anderson Library, 2nd floor, University Drive entrance off Calhoun Road.
Program: “Zen and the Art of Leadership”
Lecture by Venerable Master Miao Tsan
Venerable Master Miao Tsan explores the synergy between Zen and the common characteristics of successful leadership: self-discipline, responsibility, calmness in the face of challenge, and the ability to look at reality as it is. From Siddhartha to Steve Jobs, Zen principles have brought about a profound degree of personal transformation that can shape an individual into a natural leader, and Zen principles have led entrepreneurs and insightful corporate business people to greater success. Ten horses should pull in one direction: When leaders learn how to leave egocentric management style behind, teams can become productive and employees can reach their full potential.

When: Friday, September 21, Noon - 1 p.m.
Where: Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center, 6411 Fannin St.
Hermann Conference Center, Ground Floor of the Atrium
Program: “Finding Peace and Focus in a Hectic Environment”
Lecture by Venerable Master Miao Tsan
Venerable Master Miao Tsan will share ways that healthcare professionals can deal with stress in their daily work. Attendees will learn techniques to manage the effects of stress encountered when dealing with patients and co-workers, rather than bringing those problems home to family and friends. This practical session applicable is to all involved in healthcare--physicians, nurses, therapists, technicians, and hospital support staff.

When: Friday, September 21, 7p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Where: Rothko Chapel, 1409 Sul Ross Street

In this special lecture and workshop program presented in conjunction with The Rothko Chapel and the Jung Center Houston, Zen Master Miao Tsan will explain the truth of Oneness. Ignorance of this fundamental truth of Oneness leads humanity to the world of duality, which is the root cause of all forms of conflicts and sufferings. Master Miao Tsan will explore the fundamental nature of Oneness and the way material attachments prevent our awareness of it.

When: Saturday, September 22, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.

KHOU's Katherine Whaley braces for reader questions

Is KHOU 11 morning traffic anchor Katherine Whaley injured? My readers want to know if she's OK.

Mike:
Inquiring minds want to know -- what's up with KHOU's Katherine Whaley? I noticed Wednesday morning she was sporting a very large brace on her left knee, and then was not on the air this morning. Do you have the scoop?
- Tom

No need to worry, Whaley is A-OK.

“The brace on leg is actually a creative solution to a wardrobe issue," Whaley explained to mikemcguff.com. "I use the knee brace to hold my microphone when there’s no waistband on my dress."

In fact, many times in a TV studio these days, female anchors are wearing these braces on their legs. Fashionable, sleek dresses don't have belts and coats to hide microphone and IFB boxes (the box that connects to the Secret Service like earpiece anchors use to hear producers) like dudes have.

And Whaley was gone for a good reason.

"Just returned from a long weekend trip to Scottsdale, AZ," Whaley told me. "Had a great vacation, but it’s nice to be back in the routine!”

Fox 26's Kristin Kane engaged?

The last time I posted about Fox 26 KRIV's Kristin Kane, she had just won SportsRadio 610 KILT's Media Hotties Tourney for the second time.

It should come to no surprise that Kane is also off the singles market. And one of my readers recently noticed:

Mike,
Would you happen to know if Kristin Kane is engaged? My wife noticed a ring on her finger last week.
Regards,
Frank

Frank's wife was correct. Kane was proposed to by fiance Tom on her birthday in New York City at the place where they met and went to school - Columbia University. She didn't see it coming.

"And it was definitely time," Kane told mikemcguff.com. "We've been together 5.5 years, half of that has been long distance. Tom lives up north but we've been able to make it work. We see each other every two weeks. Talk about a lot of traveling! I'm so tired of getting on planes unless it's for vacation."

It sounds like a common story in the TV news business unfortunately.

Kristin and Tom will be married later this next year at Aldrich Mansion just outside of Newport, Rhode Island. It's the mansion featured in the movie "Meet Joe Black" with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins.

"I can't wait to marry my best friend and celebrate with family and friends," Kane told me.

Congrats!

KENS 5 hires Jeff Goldblatt from WMAQ NBC 5 as main anchor

Wow, that was fast. I just posted that KENS5 anchor Jeff Vaughn was out of the San Antonio Belo station as of last Friday. Then the station just posted news of Vaughn's replacement - Jeff Goldblatt formerly of WMAQ NBC 5 Chicago:

Award-winning journalist Jeff Goldblatt is joining the KENS 5 news team, the station announced Monday afternoon.

He will appear weeknights at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. alongside KENS 5 anchors Deborah Knapp and Sarah Lucero, KENS 5 President and General Manager Bob McGann said.

"I'm very pleased to have someone of Jeff's experience not only on the anchor desk but on the reporting front," McGann said. "He has tremendous experience covering national and international stories."

Goldblatt most recently worked for NBC 5 News in Chicago, where he's on the anchor desk and reporting on a variety of assignments.

From 2008 through 2010, Goldblatt was the main anchor for the prime-time newscast of Fox Chicago/WFLD. In addition to in-studio anchoring, his responsibilities included field anchoring and interviews with key newsmakers from the desk. While at WFLD, he won two regional Emmy Awards, one for investigative reporting and the other for hard-news reporting.

Goldblatt also worked as a Chicago-based correspondent for Fox News Channel for nine years. He covered Hurricane Katrina from its landfall through its aftermath and spent more than two months in the region reporting on the devastation.

After the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, he reported from Shanksville, Pa., and from Ground Zero in New York City.

Internationally, he has reported overseas on the War on Terror from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq. Goldblatt also was on the front lines in the Middle East during the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War.

Goldblatt graduated with honors from Colgate University with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He and his wife have four children, ages 9, 6, and 4-year-old twins.

Jeff Goldblatt will begin his career at KENS 5 on Aug. 13.

Jeff Vaughn out at KENS5 San Antonio

UPDATE
KENS 5 hires Jeff Goldblatt to replace Jeff Vaughn as main anchor

Heard a rumor over the weekend that practically brand new, out of the box, KENS 5 anchor Jeff Vaughn was out at the Belo San Antonio station. Sure enough, Vaughn says the same on his Facebook page:

As of today, I no longer work for KENS5.

Although it was an enjoyable experience at KENS-TV, I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life.

Most of all I will miss delivering the news to the wonderful people of San Antonio, who have embraced and supported my family since we arrived in 2010.

Vaughn came to KENS 5 in November 2009 from mornings at KSHB, the NBC affiliate in Kansas City, Mo. He succeeded the popular Chris Marrou, who anchored at KENS for 36 years before retiring.

Before Kansas City, Vaughn worked at WDIV-TV Detroit, KCBD-TV Lubbock and KMID-TV Midland.

Jeanne Jakle of the San Antonio Express News got a no comment basically from KENS.
