KPRC 2 alum gets CBS Early Show host gig

As I mentioned on Twitter earlier this afternoon, CBS is shaking up the usual third place network morning program The Early Show.

That's big news in Houston because the Black Rock brass has chosen former KPRC 2 sports anchor Chris Wragge to be the face. Wragge and co-anchor Erica Hill (former CNN and HLN anchor) have been holding the fort down on The Early Show Saturday morning edition, but are now the main duo.

Wragge has also been serving as the 5 and 11pm anchor of WCBS in New York. According to his WCBS bio, he joined WCBS-TV in 2004 as the 5pm, 6pm and 11pm weekday Sports Anchor/Sports Director. He became the main dude on the anchor desk in November of 2006. Clearly he is a busy guy.

Wragge came to Houston's KPRC 2 and served as sports director from 1998–2004. Before that he was a reporter for Entertainment Tonight.

What other former Houston news anchor was a talent on Entertainment Tonight? If you know, answer in the comments below.

A news release issued today says KPRC 2 general manager Larry Blackerby is leaving the station for a new gig with McGraw-Hill Broadcasting at WRTV the ABC-affiliate station in Indianapolis. He starts January 3, 2011:

McGraw-Hill Broadcasting, a unit of The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE: MHP), today announced the appointment of Larry Blackerby as vice president and general manager of WRTV, the ABC-affiliate station in Indianapolis, effective Jan. 3, 2011. In this position, Mr. Blackerby will be responsible for the strategy and day-to-day editorial and business operations of WRTV and the station's digital properties.

"Larry brings to this position a long and consistent record of ratings and revenue growth at both network affiliates and independent stations across the country," said Darrell K. Brown, president of McGraw-Hill Broadcasting. "We look forward to tapping into his experience, leadership and energy at WRTV."

Mr. Blackerby has more than 30 years of experience in television markets around the country, including Palm Springs, CA; Jacksonville, FL; Jackson, MI; and Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point, NC. Most recently, he was vice president and general manager of KPRC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Houston, which he joined in 2006.

Mr. Blackerby holds a bachelor's degree in Radio-Television-Film from Indiana State University and an associate degree in Applied Science from Lake Land College.

Mr. Blackerby succeeds Donald Lundy, who is retiring at the end of 2010 after a distinguished career at WRTV and The McGraw-Hill Companies.

Free Slurpee from 7-Eleven this Friday

Sure Black Friday is this week, but 7-Eleven is changing that to Purple Friday with a free Slurpee offer. Not any 7-Elevens that I know of in the Houston city limits, but there are plenty everywhere else around Texas:

7-Eleven, Inc. is celebrating people coming together by offering a free, small Slurpee® drink on "Purple Friday" — Nov. 26. 7-Eleven wants to extend the fun of its Slurpee Unity Tour that visited 14 cities before arriving to Washington, D.C. for a Slurpee Summit. On Nov. 26, or "Purple Friday" as 7-Eleven has dubbed the day, a free, small Slurpee drink will be available at participating 7-Eleven stores upon presentation of an online coupon.

On Friday, Nov. 26, the coupon is redeemable from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. local time and will be available during that time on the Slurpee Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Slurpee) for fans to print. Simply, "like" the fan page, print the coupon and bring it to a participating store to get a free, small Slurpee. The free, small Slurpee drinks will only be available on "Purple Friday" at participating stores while supplies last.

Credit card skimming scams on the rise in Houston

Teachers, don't flirt with students using social media in Texas

Don't Stand So Close To MeTeachers...don't get frisky with students in Texas using social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. That's the lesson from an updated Educators’ Code of Ethics recently endorsed by the State Board of Education. The Code of Ethics was updated by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC), which oversees educator certification issues.

Texas Education Agency staff says it wanted the updated ethics code because too many disciplinary case referrals were coming in. It seems these cases involved teachers who were found to have sent students thousands of text messages. A release from the TEA says sometimes the content of the messages was not inappropriate on their face, but the volume of messages and time of day the messages were sent indicated that the educator was “grooming” the student for a future sexual relationship. Please no Facebook "poking" feature jokes here.

The law says a school district employee commits a second-degree felony under Penal Code Section 21.12 if the employee engages in sexual contact with a student who is not their spouse. Here is where Beyonce Knowles' Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) song comes in I guess. I can imagine all all of the news stories that would be written if a teacher tried to marry a student. Interesting law there.

The new provision in the Code of Ethics says:

(I) Standard 3.9. The educator shall refrain from inappropriate communication with a student or minor, including, but not limited to, electronic communication such as cell phone, text messaging, email, instant messaging, blogging, or other social network communication. Factors that may be considered in assessing whether the communication is inappropriate include, but are not limited to:
(i) the nature, purpose, timing, and amount of the communication;
(ii) the subject matter of the communication;
(iii) whether the communication was made openly or the educator attempted to conceal the communication;
(iv) whether the communication could be reasonably interpreted as soliciting sexual contact or a romantic relationship;
(v) whether the communication was sexually explicit; and
(vi) whether the communication involved discussion(s) of the physical or sexual attractiveness or the sexual history, activities, preferences, or fantasies of either the educator or the student.

Fake KPRC 2 Twitter account takes Houston news to the extreme

It's become common for people to make fake Twitter accounts for real companies or people. They are usually parody accounts. You might have heard about a fake account set up for BP's PR team during the Gulf oil spill.

But now the Houston media has a fake one!

That's right, there really is an @local2breaking account for KPRC 2. And now there is an @local2faking one. Local2faking's bio reads, "MY CAPS LOCK KEY IS BROKEN, WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?" At the time of this writing the account has 76 followers. No word who is behind it.

I don't really follow what the actual @local2breaking account sends out (in full disclosure, I consulted KPRC on Facebook pages, but not its Twitter accounts), but from what I am told there has been some all caps tweets (TV people write news scripts in all caps and often forget to turn the lock off) and other unusual social media behavior. So local2faking takes that to the extreme.

Recent tweets include:
READY TO TAKE A BATH AND READ A BOOK. - and - DON'T HAVE MONEY FOR CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR FAMILY THIS YEAR? KILL THE BASTARDS.

Those two examples are the tweets from local2faking that aren't too offensive or racist for me to post here. We will have to see how the station handles the fake Twitter account. Will it be ignored or will a cease and desist letter be sent in 140 characters or less?

Five Holiday Shopping Traps to Avoid

In its December issue, Consumer Reports offers advice when out there battling other shoppers this holiday season (also scroll for holiday tipping ideas):

1. Deep discount come-ons. "Door-buster" sales promise big savings and not just on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, or the following Cyber Monday, when shoppers go online. Consumer Reports found an electric percolator "on-sale" at Kohl's stores and Kohls.com for $61.99, a discount from the regular $69.99. But those prices are higher than the $59.99 manufacturer's suggested retail price. Retailers, especially discount stores, commonly sell below MSRP. Using a Web search, Consumer Reports found better deals. The best price was $30.03 plus $8.21 shipping at Salestores.com.

* What to do? Comparison shop before buying and don't worry about missing a sale, it's likely that another one will come around before the season ends.

2. Gift-card gotchas. New federal rules for gift cards limit issuers' ability to charge certain fees and impose expiration dates. Inactivity and service fees can be charged only if a card hasn't been used for at least one year. But issuers can still charge fees to buy cards, as they do for bank-issued variety, those that bear a credit-card logo. For example, expect to pay $3 to $7 for an American Express gift card. Also, gift cards are not protected if an issuer goes bankrupt. If that's the case, the card could be worthless. Beyond that, many people never get around to spending their gift cards. A quarter of people surveyed by Consumer Reports in October 2009 who received gift cards the previous year said they hadn't redeemed their almost one year-old cards.

* What to do? Give cash or a check. Cash never expires or loses its value, and is good anywhere. If the check is never cashed, the money stays in your bank account.

3. Extended-warranty pitches. Salespeople push service plans because retailers keep 50 percent or more of what they charge for them, but they are notoriously bad deals. Some repairs are already covered by the standard warranty that comes automatically with the product. Consumer Reports' data shows that products seldom break within the extended-warranty window of coverage, when items do break, the repairs, on average, cost about the same as the warranty.

* What to do? Some credit cards automatically extend the manufacturer's warranty on anything purchased with them, so check the card's website. Even if the warranty expired, check with the retailer or manufacturer, which might choose or be legally obligated to repair and make good on a product that prematurely fails or otherwise shows signs of a defect.

4. Return-policy limitations. Some retailers relax their return policies during the holiday season, but don't count on it and always learn the rules before buying. Some companies have different return policies for in-store, online, or mail-order purchases.

* What to do? Keep the receipt and let the recipient know the return policy. If the store provides a special gift receipt, include that with your gift.

5. Restocking fees. Many items, especially electronics and special orders, are subject to restocking fees that range from 10 – 25 percent if they are not returned in a factory-sealed box.

* What to do? Don't open the package unless you're sure you want the item inside. Items such as computer software, music CDs, and movie DVDs generally aren't returnable if the seal is broken. If a fee is charged, try to negotiate a partial refund, but never pay a fee if the item is defective.

A Tip Sheet on Holiday Tipping

How much should you plan to tip your housecleaner, child-care provider, or hairdresser this holiday season? The Consumer Reports National Research Center conducted a nationally representative survey early this year, when memories of holiday tips were fresh, to find out.

Despite the recession, respondents who did tip spent at about the same rate as in years past. The highest median tip was $35, for the category of cleaning people, with a few service providers receiving thank-yous as high as $500. If you plan on offering gifts of thanks this holiday season, take these tips from Consumer Reports:

* Give cash equal to the value of one session or a week's wage to self-employed or lower-wage earners.
* Gift cards can be useful for tipping mail carriers. They aren't supposed to accept cash, but can accept gift cards valued at $20 or less that can't be exchanged for cash. Otherwise, you might want to avoid gift cards because of their fees.
* Be sure that food gifts won't trigger an allergic reaction or violate dietary restrictions.
* If you're keeping to a tight budget and can't afford to tip this year, consider writing a heartfelt note of thanks instead.

Additional information on holiday shopping appears in the December issue of Consumer Reports and online at www.ConsumerReports.org.

Hudson and Harrigan replaced by Corey Foley and Greg Thunder on 100.3 KILT

UPDATE APRIL 23, 2014
Corey Foley leaves The Bull 100.3 KILT; plus other changes

The long awaited announcement concerning the Hudson and Harrigan replacements on the 100.3 KILT morning show is here.

The station announced Friday that Corey Foley and Greg Thunder will serve as the station’s new morning show team.

Corey Foley most recently handled morning drive at KBWF (The Wolf) San Francisco and is a veteran of The Dave Ryan Show at KDWB Minneapolis. She has worked mornings at KDWB Minneapolis, Kiss 105.3 in Gainesville and Wild 94.1 in Tampa.

“I’m thrilled to work at such a legendary station and am excited to join CBS RADIO in Houston,” Foley said in a statement.

Greg Thunder comes to Houston from his No. 1-rated morning show at KS-95 in Minneapolis. He has worked across multiple formats at the likes of KMPS Seattle, KDWB Minneapolis, KALC Denver, WQHT New York and WPLJ New York.

“My wife and I are incredibly excited to call Houston our new home," he said. "I am really looking forward to working with Corey. We’re thrilled about the new show and having a lot of fun in the morning on 100.3 KILT.”

“We’re all very excited about the new morning show for KILT," said KILT Program Director and CBS RADIO Houston’s Vice President of Music Programming Mark Adams. "Greg and Corey both possess a wealth of major market competitive experience and are dedicated professionals. I’m confident they’re going to be a great addition to our station.”

KTRK 13's 6pm news long credits from 10/27/1989

The credit close of KTRK 13's 6pm newscast from 10/27/1989 which should have been a Friday. Friday is the day the station would run long credits. Many of the names on the credits are still there today or left in the last few years. There have been some promotions too.

Former Univision KXLN 45 news director Deanna Landron-Reyes lands new gig

Deanna Landron-Reyes, former news director at Houston Univision KXLN 45, is moving east to Florida for a new gig.

She'll be an executive producer with CF News 13, the 24 hour news operation in Orlando.

"The move to Central Florida News 13 in Orlando is particularly exciting for me because I have been out of the news business for the last few years," Landron-Reyes told the mikemcguff.com blog. "So, I'll relish the opportunity to work with a group of highly regarded professionals in a 24-hour news setting. And while I'm leaving Houston, ties to family, friends, and colleagues will ensure a continued relationship with this great city that has been home for so long."

Landron-Reyes started her TV news career as an intern for the Armed Forces Network in Germany. She later moved on to KAUZ 6 in Wichita Falls, TX. There she worked her way up from Chyron operator to producer. She was the Univision KXLN 45 news director from July 2003 to May 2005.

She starts November 15th. Congrats.

KHOU 11 goes hyperlocal across the Houston area

Hyperlocal is a buzz term in journalism right now. It means focusing on the news for small areas like neighborhoods and communities. Considering Houston's size, it's hyperlocal-ish to concentrate on the smaller cities and towns that make up the viewing area.

KHOU is working that angle by teaming up with Bayou City Media on its more than 65 community websites throughout Houston and Galveston:

KHOU-TV, Channel 11 and Bayou City Media have announced an alliance to provide hyper-local weather information and news headlines online to a network of community websites throughout Houston.

Now each of the 65 communities served by Bayou City Media will receive real-time, geographically targeted weather conditions from Channel 11’s Chief Meteorologist Gene Norman. The new weather widget located on each of these community sites, such as www.woodlandsonline.com, will allow users to obtain their neighborhood weather forecast after entering their zip code, access to 30 LIVE radar images from Houston and beyond and a link to KHOU.com.

“Our viewers want to know as they move around our city what to expect, how to dress and whether their plans will be affected,” said Susan McEldoon, KHOU’s President and General Manager. “Now we can provide that every minute, every day, on their favorite neighborhood website.”

Bayou City Media has produced local websites for more than 14 years in the Houston area.

“Our partnership with KHOU continues our efforts to bring Houston communities the best of the Internet,” said Eric Kintigh, Owner, Bayou City Media. “KHOU is known for having the best weather coverage in southeast Texas and we share a commitment to quality community news.”

From Acres Homes to Willowbrook, Texas, Bayou City has local websites that offer classifieds, shopping directories, Job postings and additional content including user generated information specific to that neighborhood community.

“We are excited to partner with Bayou City Media,” said Christine DiStadio, KHOU’s Director of Digital Media. “Khou.com will now be able to extend our digital reach by delivering a targeted hyper-local weather forecast, LIVE radar and 11 News headlines to residents in each of these 65 neighborhoods.”

A full list of neighborhoods served by Bayou City Media can be found at: http://www.khou.com/community/bayou-city

Jerome Gray to leave KPRC 2; possible replacement

I heard the rumor a few months ago that longtime Houston anchor Jerome Gray was having contract re-negotiating 'issues' with KPRC 2. Guess that appeared to be true.

David Barron with the Houston Chronicle reports that Gray's last day will be November 18. Economics were cited as the reason. The same thing happened to his co-anchor Wendy Corona.

Gray started in Houston with KHOU 11 and had a good run there, followed by his managing editor and 4/6pm anchor gig at KPRC.

The buzz in the Houston media has been that Iain Page, from the Golf Channel, who started recently at KPRC 2 weekends as an anchor is Gray's replacement. Who knows? Although that makes sense considering KPRC has had a one anchor weekend show for a very long time now. Also, in this economy, hiring a guy with national exposure for weekends doesn't make a lot of sense. Then late last night I heard it could be KPRC morning anchor Owen Conflenti. Personally I don't see why KPRC would take him off its successful morning show, unless they want to rub a little Conflenti magic on the afternoon shows. We will wait and see.

"Live in Houston" features Velvet Revolver's early years

Velvet Revolver - "Slither" from 'Live in Houston' DVD from RawknRoll on Vimeo.

The new DVD "Live in Houston" features Velvet Revolver in the band's early years. And that wasn't that long ago - 2005. Since then the band released another album, lost Scott Weiland as the singer and hasn't been together since 2008.

I was at the featured 2005 VR show which took place at Verizon Wireless Theater in downtown Houston. It was an awesome show. The band was on fire (I'm sure having a camera crew didn't hurt) and the crowd was really into it. We were right in the middle of the floor (the jib camera kept flying overhead).

Later that night, we were actually those people, the ones that go to the bus loading area. We got all of the band member autographs though.

The Velvet Revolver "Live in Houston" DVD comes out November 16. (via Blabbermouth)

106.9 The Point KHPT is now Houston's 106.9 The Zone! Alternative Hits

106.9 The Point KHPT was a station I was excited about in 2000 when it signed on playing 80s music. In the last few years I totally forgot about it.

That is hard for someone like me who blogs about Houston media too. That tells you how much it really sucked.

Well Cox is trying to do something about that sucking sound you've heard on the 106.9 frequency. Today the radio trades are Buzzing that KHPT is now Houston's 106.9 The Zone! Alternative Hits... 80's and 90's. Will this be an improvement? Not sure.

94.5 The Buzz KTBZ is one of the top alternative stations in the country believe it or not. Guess Cox believes going after a similar alternative format can't hurt. Good luck with that.

And isn't another station in town already doing this? What about 103.7 FM Houston's Adult Alternative KHJK-FM? I'll admit it is almost impossible to pick this station up in Houston (go to Beaumont to hear it), but it actually just did win best radio station from The Houston Press. 103.7 even has some Buzzworthy cred with Steve Robison who was on 107.5/94.5 The Buzz in the past.

What's funny about the timing is I was jamming to New Order one day this weekend with a friend. I was telling him I was surprised there is no classic alternative station on air here. You can find that format on the Internet and Sirius XM (1st Wave). We'll see if Houston's 106.9 The Zone! Alternative Hits... 80's and 90's matches these formats. Considering the station told radio-info it will play, "alternative-gold format stars artists such as U2, Pearl Jam, Green Day, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers and Matchbox 20" I'm guessing no.

Get judged by Ken Hoffman before the Texans game

Houston Texans Applique Banner FlagI know there has been controversy concerning Houston Texans tailgating recently, but here could be another reason to get you out there. Yes, it is a chance to have The Houston Chronicle's Ken Hoffman judge you.

Bing, the search 'decision' engine by Microsoft, is sponsoring a tailgating contest this Sunday at 9:30am sharp in the Reliant Stadium Yellow lot. Teams compete in fourcategories:

1) Cooking: Originality, presentation, regional flair and taste
2) Tailgate Spirit and Environment: Includes tailgating set-up and team flair
3) Parking Lot Agility: bean bag and football toss
4) Team/Sport Knowledge: Trivia challenge

Number 5 could be how many kegs can you drink before thinking the Astrodome is where the game is.

This is where Hoffman comes in (read his story about this here). Hoffy, former Houston Texans player Steve McKinney among others will judge the action.

Even if you don't care about the competition, the first 2000 visitors will receive Bing padded seat cushions. That way if the San Diego Chargers start killing the Texans you have something to throw at the field. Kick off is at noon.

Former Fox 26 KRIV reporter Todd Duplantis' new career

Here is news on former Fox 26 KRIV reporter Todd Duplantis. I had reported in 2009 that Duplantis came back into TV with a news desk gig at KHOU 11.

Duplantis left KHOU in April. He tells me that he's back in public relations. His new career path takes the form of PR/Communications manager for Houston based energy broker Clear Energy Solutions.

Those who have followed his career might remember Duplantis was also a VJ on MTV competitor Hit Video USA in the 1980s. That was a full video music network located in Houston that also aired in town on Channel 5. You probably only really could pick it up over the air on Houston's east side.

Top 10 fashion mistakes men make - and how to avoid them

Houston blogger David Yarbrough (a former KTRK 13 colleague) of Style Points blogs about the ten mental errors concerning menswear for the mikemcguff.com blog:

Freedom of expression is indeed one of the fundamentals of American life, and many a fashion statement has been made in public and private circles for generations. Some are poignant (like the tuxedo), while others, quite frankly, should not be tried at home (MC Hammer’s “diaper pants”).

For the everyday man who dresses for success, an important goal that goes without saying is to not look out of place. Here is my “top 10” list of mistakes that can turn the most savvy of men into social deviants in a hurry:

Black Satin 1 1/2" Mens Bow Tie10. Not knowing how to tie a bow tie. I rated this at No. 10 only because men can use pre-tied bow ties (or perhaps rely on women) to avoid having to do it manually. For starters, the bow tie is an important part of wearing a tuxedo. Tying a bow tie, like anything else that is worth being good at, requires practice. Here’s a head’s up: If you know how to tie your shoe, you already know how to tie a bow tie. Now, prove it to yourself in the mirror.

9. Socks that expose the leg while seated. Over-the-calf socks are a surefire way to ensure full coverage when a man crosses his legs in a sitting position. Anything less is uncivilized. Who wants to see a hairy leg?

8. A lack of coordination. Not coordinating the color of your shoes with your belt. This probably is no big deal when you’re in grade school. But it counts when you reach adulthood. Same goes for the color of a pocket square matching up with the tie and/or shirt.

7. Unpolished shoes. People will quickly notice two things about you: Your head and your toes.
When it comes to the latter, your footwear conveys whether you mean business or are in casual mode. Polished shoes are the finishing touch to a professional presentation; unpolished shoes suggest that you care less than the guy who does.

Dockers Men's Gordon Cap Toe Oxford,Black,10 M US6. Wearing cap-toe shoes with a tuxedo. There’s very much a regimen in place when it comes to formal wear. Patent leather shoes are the first choice, in either a plain-toe lace-up or a pump with grosgrain bow. Plan B is a polished black calfskin shoe or pump. Cap-toe shoes are more appropriate with business attire, not formal attire.

5. Excessive jewelry. Only winning sports franchises such as the New York Yankees, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys can lay claim to the “bling” dynasty, where over-the-top-looking rings are definitely for show-n-tell. Unless you’re a member of a championship team, wearing such baubles in public can distort your look. Thick necklaces also send a message of ostentatiousness. Simple, elegant pieces such as a sterling silver signet ring or a titanium watch can go a long way for men.

4. Underestimating the power of a manicure. A firm handshake says something about an individual, man or woman. A woman once commented that my hands were soft but that my nails were unusually long. I immediately went to CVS and got nail clippers. Long nails not only are not cool for a man, but dirt can get underneath more easily. Investing in a manicure (and a pedicure, while you’re at it) is money well spent.

3. Wearing patterns that compete. Guys wanting to look smart can outsmart themselves sometimes. For example, a plaid jacket may work well with a striped shirt and a paisley tie. But a plaid shirt risks clashing with a plaid jacket, or a striped tie may get lost in front of a striped shirt. Integrating solids with patterns removes clutter. In other words, less is more when it comes to wearing patterns.

2. Ill-fitting clothing. Even if you got a great deal on a Kiton suit off the rack, you will have wasted your money if you bought the wrong size. Any reputable tailor will tell you upfront whether radical alterations would work. Also, wearing trousers that are too short will result in automatic membership to the Pee Wee Herman fan club.

Classic "I'm With Stupid" Tshirt, Small Ash1. Taking “casual Friday” too far. In work environments where suits are worn every day (law firms, accounting firms, banks, to name a few), blazers and khakis for men might be considered an option. The “casual Friday” concept, however, has encountered a rather slippery slope. Jeans and T shirts, shorts and sneakers can test the sartorial sensibilities of the workplace. In the words of some dapper-looking ESPN talking head: “C’mon, man!” Common sense has to kick in sometime, where a man doesn’t have to look like a grunged-out skateboarder in his cubicle. If your take your image seriously, others will treat you accordingly.

David Yarbrough has served as a fashion consultant on various Houston television stations.

Disney/ABC to sell some owned and operated stations

In a time when few TV stations are going up for sale, Disney/ABC announced it is selling two of its owned and operated stations:

Fisher-Price Dance Star MickeyThe stations -- WJRT in Flint, Mich., and WTVG in Toledo, Ohio, - are strong revenue generators in their markets and are expected to remain ABC affiliates. Pending FCC approval, the deal is expected to be completed in early 2011.

There has been speculation that Disney might spin off ABC, and Disney CEO Bob Iger, who is scheduled to report the company's earnings next week on Nov. 11, kept his options open back in March during the company's annual shareholders meeting when he said, "There are no guarantees in terms of what will remain part of our company and what will not." A Disney spokeswoman said the company has "no plans" to sell any more of its O&Os, and there are "no current plans" to acquire additional stations. READ THE REST

This news is of Texas interest because Disney/ABC owns KTRK 13 in Houston. This kind of thing is nothing new, other network groups have sold off smaller stations to concentrate on the large markets where there is more money to be made.

Houston man to appear on FOX game show 'PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge'

It appears a Houston resident will go for $1,000,000 on the FOX game show “PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge.” The show airs on FOX immediately following NFL games.

This Sunday evening, Houston resident Johnny Whitt faces off against Playboy Playmate of the Year Sara Jean Underwood in the opening round. Talk about a matchup. In the above clip I almost forgot to watch Whitt. Whitt, who is a semi-reitred machinist, holds is own against the Paris Hilton looking Underwood.

I often get annoyed at the character type that represents Houston on these types of show. And Whitt is a stereotypical Texan figure, but at least he has character and appears to win over the poker table and the audience.

The people behind the show won't tell me if Whitt beats the Playmate, but they don't have the best poker face so I get the vibe this won't be his only appearance. They also tell me the show is the most-watched poker show in U.S. History.

Which GPS features are worth the trip?

Consumer Reports looks at new portable GPS models and which features are worth. This appears in the magazine's December issue:

Traffic information. This shows traffic flow along major highways, often indicated by color-coded lines, as well as the location of accidents and road construction. It can warn you of congestion along your route, and some systems even reroute around it. At one time traffic info was available only by subscription, for about $60 per year. But many newer models provide it free of charge supported by small onscreen ads. That is the way to go.

Bottom line: It can be useful for metro-area commuters or for navigating around rush-hour traffic in an unfamiliar city. But CR found that it can be limited and its accuracy can vary. You can often get similar information by listening to radio traffic reports.

Connected services: By using a built-in cellular modem, some high-end Garmin and TomTom models can deliver real-time online information for items such as local weather, fuel prices, and movie times. Or you can perform a Google search for a nearby business or point of interest. After an initial period of free service, a subscription is required ($10 per month for TomTom, $60 per year for Garmin).

Bottom line: If you don't mind the fee, the service can be handy for if you frequently make local searches or want access to the most up-to-date information. But keep in mind that if you're in an area with no data connection, it won't help you.

Voice recognition. This allows you to enter a destination and perform other functions simply by speaking a command. It's available in a few high-end models.

Bottom line: It's handy but not essential. It can reduce distraction by helping you keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. But patience is often needed. CR found Garmin's system to be the most helpful.

Text-to-speech. Also called "spoken street names." It lets a unit say specific street names or highway numbers when it gives directions, rather than simply saying a generic "turn left."

Bottom line: It makes directions more precise and is available even in lower-priced models.

Reality view/lane assist. These are often packaged together. Reality view displays a 3D view of exits, intersections, and overhead signs as you approach them. Lane assist shows the best lane to be in for an upcoming turn.

Bottom line: These are worth it. They make highway transitions easier to navigate.

In addition, here are some of CR's Recommended GPS navigators for several price-points:

* Best for $150 or less: Magellan Maestro 4350, $150; TomTomOne140S, $100
* Best for $250 or less: Garmin Nuvi 1490T, $250; TomTomGo740 Live, $250
* Best for more than $250: Garmin Nuvi 3760T, $400; Motorola Motonav TN765t, $280

Here must be one of the last Dolcefino series that Bivens worked on with the undercover man.
