My friend told me how she was about to go on vacation in Mexico. I immediately asked does she watch the
Real World: Cancun. She said with an eye roll, "I am a 30 year old woman, do you think I watch the Real World?"
I am not a woman, I am older than 30 and only semi-ashamed to admit I still watch the Real Worlds on MTV. Look, I've been watching the show since the first season off and on. Sometimes I was too poor to have cable so I missed those seasons.
The Cancun season is as good as ever. Plenty of action as Blink 182 look alike member Joey Rozmus
of the Boston band Late Nite Wars has already been kicked off. Plus guys and girls will appreciate the Cancun scenery if you know what I mean.
From a media blogger perspective, I like how MTV is totally losing control due to social networking. Think about it. In the past, the cast members were unknowns who didn't really have access to media unless MTV set it up for them. It was actually hard to find out their names in the pre-Internet age.
But now the casts are starting to have their own videos on YouTube! Ayiiia Elizarraras (who has cast herself as the villain apparently) is really taking advantage of the show buzz/social networking to build a brand for herself. From the AyiiiaShow on
YouTube (videos from off the show with other castmembers) to
MySpace - she's all over the place without an MTV filter. You know things have really gotten out of hand when the boss of the roommates
gets her own YouTube channel and chats about each episode (with castmember interviews). Or how the hotel where the roommates live is releasing photos on
Flickr.
I
first wrote about this last year when the cast of Hollywood took to the Net to clear up what really happened in the house.
Who knows? Maybe I am the naive one. Maybe MTV likes all the free publicity, but if I know corporate media like Viacom, I'm sure execs aren't thrilled to be losing control.
