Sophia Stamas leaves CBS Austin

Sophia Stamas has left her position as morning traffic anchor and Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) at CBS Austin KEYE.

Jenna Wilson joins CBS Austin

Stamas joined the station in August 2015 as a Special Projects and Investigative Producer. A proud native Austinite, Stamas spent her entire life in Texas, never calling another state home.

During her time at CBS Austin, Stamas earned a Lone Star Emmy Award for an investigative report exposing excessive foreign travel spending by a state agency.

Before joining CBS Austin, Stamas worked as the Weekend Anchor and Military Reporter at KCEN 6 Waco-Temple-Killeen. Her "Military Matters" coverage took her as far as Bagram, Afghanistan, where she embedded with Army troops in 2012 and 2014. She also covered military stories closer to home, including Fort Hood (now called Fort Cavazos) and Lackland Air Force Base.

Stamas began her reporting career as a MMJ at KXII 12 Sherman and previously worked as a producer at YNN in Austin (now called Spectrum News 1 Austin).

She graduated summa cum laude from Texas State University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Print Journalism and a minor in Theatre. While at Texas State, Stamas wrote and cartooned for the University Star newspaper, performed in numerous theatre productions, and worked part-time as a communications specialist for a major international staffing company. She also served as a teaching assistant for the university’s Stage Combat class, where she learned to choreograph realistic fight scenes—though she always believed the pen was mightier than the sword.

Beyond her journalism career, she served on the KLRU Community Advisory Board from 2008 to 2012.

In 2013, Stamas received the Central Texas Crime Prevention Association's Outstanding Media Award for her coverage of the Fort Hood shooter trial, the West explosion, and stories highlighting Military Police and crime prevention efforts.

Hannah Mackenzie has let us know her freelance reporting assignment with KPRC 2 is coming to an end as of July 10.

"Being a Cypress native, it is disappointing KPRC management decided not to offer me a full time contract," Mackenzie told mikemcguff.com. "I’m back on the job hunt now, looking forward to my next chapter. My time here has allowed me to grow and learn as a journalist and who knows, hopefully you’ll see me back on the small screen in Houston in the not-so-distant future! In the mean time, stay safe, healthy and keep up with me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.”

Mackenzie returned to Houston to work at KPRC in January 2020.

The Edward R Murrow award-winning journalist previously worked as an anchor/reporter for WEAR Pensacola, FL.

“It’s been an amazing six months covering breaking news in the city I call home," Mackenzie added. "Explosions, water main breaks, protests, tornadoes and tropical storms...and perhaps the biggest news of my career: a global pandemic. It’s safe to say I’ve covered the gamut in the news world during my time in Houston."

WEAR Pensacola anchor/reporter Hannah Mackenzie joins KPRC 2 as a freelance reporter

Hannah Mackenzie, a former anchor/reporter for WEAR Pensacola, FL, is joining KPRC as a freelance reporter.

"HOU-ge news! I’m heading back to my hometown where I’ve accepted a freelance reporter position with @KPRC2 - the station I grew up watching. So excited for this next chapter! #Houston here I come," Mackenzie tweeted.

So when I get asked who is replacing the recently departed KPRC 2 reporter Sophia Beausoleil, let's assume its Mackenzie. Or it could be a total coincidence - if you are around TV news long enough, you get this.

Mackenzie grew up in Houston, but is originally from Aberdeen, Scotland. She is not the only Houston TV reporter who immigrated to H-Town from Scotland. So did actor Daniel Craig's (you know James Bond) second cousin, KHOU 11 consumer reporter Tiffany Craig, who moved here from Dingwall, Scotland.

She left WEAR in October 2019 and started with the station in 2016.

Hannah Mackenzie is joining WLOS ABC 13 Asheville, NC as a nightside reporter.

"Yep, I’m moving from the sandy beaches of NWFL to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, NC — home of the renowned Vanderbilt Estate," Mackenzie posted on Facebook. "I couldn’t be more thrilled to announce I’ve accepted the role of nightside reporter at WLOS — A station with a stellar reputation for strong journalism and storytelling skills. It’s a perfect fit, and I can’t wait to get back in the saddle (& on the small screen)!"

KPRC 2 viewers will know Mackenzie from her stint with KPRC 2 as a reporter in 2020.

After 12 amazing years at Spectrum News Austin & San Antonio (a.k.a. TWCN, YNN, News 8), I'm moving on to the next chapter of life.

In a few weeks I'll be the chief meteorologist at CW39 in Houston! I'm joining a newly formatted 6-10 a.m. show with a BIG focus on weather. Exciting stuff!

I will definitely miss Austin. It's where life happened... marriage, mortgage, the birth of my son and daughter, and friendships for life.

I'm so grateful to have worked with so many great people. And, as seen in these photos, my favorite memories are the ones away from the green screen. What a journey!

On this Labor Day weekend, I planned to not post anything at all. Then Sotolongo announced her channel 39 goodbye, and after I wrote about that news Saturday, the big tip came in that Krueger was coming to the Houston CW affiliate.

So instead of my one usual post on the weekend, I am giving you a bonus post over the holiday!

Just like The Fixx says, "One Thing Leads to Another."

As Krueger noted, he has been with the Spectrum News Austin and San Antonio cable channels for more than a decade. Heck, when he got there, they were still the Time Warner Cable News channels.

Anyone from Houston remember News 24 Houston, the joint Time Warner Cable/BELO cable news venture by any chance? Coincidentally hired was Lynn Huston to anchor.

Before moving into the local news cable world, Krueger was a meteorologist for FOX 29 KABB San Antonio (2006-2008) and KHAS Hastings, NE (2004-2006).

The Chicago native is a Purdue University grad.

The New York Times tweeted “Up to 30 Dismembered Bodies Found Near Houston, Reuters Reports.” CNN covered the story. ABC News tweeted it. Several other news organizations piled on to make the gruesome story international news. One problem: the story wasn’t true. Bigger problem: it was really really not true - it was all based on a tip from a psychic.
