Sarah Forgany stands her ground on natural hair

Sarah Forgany recently traded the flat iron for her natural texture, and the internet had a lot to say about it.

In a candid video shared to her social media, the KENS 5 San Antonio anchor addressed a wave of viewer feedback.

My first thought, as someone who has known Forgany for a long time and has straight hair, is that I should get a fluffy "alpaca look" perm to show solidarity!

The response to Forgany's curls was so intense that some viewers refused to believe it was real.

"People think it's fake. They think it's a perm. They think it's AI," Forgany shared in her video. Her response? A firm reality check: "Nope. It’s genetics."

Forgany revealed that she comes from a "curly hair family," but like many women in the spotlight, she spent years conforming to a specific aesthetic. And admitted it took a "very long time" to reach an age where she felt comfortable embracing her natural texture.

Mentioning her four-year-old daughter, Forgany wants the next generation to see that they should be proud of whatever "God gave them."

"For those of you who don't like it, thank you for writing me anyway and letting me know," Forgany said.  "I am not mad at you. You're entitled to your opinion.

"There are going to be times you're going to see me with curly hair. Other times you'll see me with straight because I can do both," she said. Her final advice to her followers was simple and powerful: "Do whatever makes you happy."

Sarah Forgany returns to KENS San Antonio

KENS 5 San Antonio morning anchor Sarah Forgany is now out of the hospital ICU where she had been on on a ventilator according to a Facebook post on her account by her family:

"To all of Sarah’s beloved viewers,

Sarah ran into complications during her recovery from surgery yesterday morning. She’s currently in ICU on a ventilator. We have no clue how long she will be here - doctors expect her recovery to take weeks - so we wanted you to know it may be a while before you see her on air again.

She is in good spirits and keeping the faith, but we would sincerely appreciate all your prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Sarah’s family"

Forgany was in also in the hospital in late March 2023.

She joined KENS 5 in 2010.

Sarah Forgany, KENS 5 San Antonio morning anchor, has given birth to baby daughter Bella on May 1, 2021. 

"Most painful & intense hours of my life....yet most amazing, spiritual & beautiful," Forgany posted.  "May 1st...my life is just beginning. Welcome Baby Girl."

KENS 5' Audrey Castoreno, Deborah Knapp and Stacia Willson held a baby shower in San Antonio.

Houston TV viewers will recognize who threw Forgany a virtual baby shower - it was KHOU 11's Grace White.

Sarah Forgany heading to KENS 5 PM shift

Sarah Forgany has been waking KENS 5 San Antonio morning viewers up for over a decade, but that changes next week as the AM anchor will move to the PM shift with the TEGNA station.

Starting Monday, November 25, 2024, Forgany will co-anchor the noon and 4 p.m. newscasts with Audrey Castoreno and the 5 p.m. newscast with Deborah Knapp.

Audrey Castoreno re-joins KENS 5 San Antonio mornings

"After waking up at 1:30 a.m. for the last 13 years, I’m smashing that alarm clock and sleeping in a bit. I look forward to being with my daughter, Bella, when she wakes up in the morning," Forgany said in a statement. "I hope our viewers who had breakfast with me all of those years will also be able to join me for lunch and dinner. After having Bella and a recent health scare, I’m grateful for this opportunity to work a more normal schedule where I can focus more on family and my health."

"When Sarah asked whether it was possible to adjust her schedule, we started exploring how that might be accomplished," added Tom Cury, KENS 5 president and general manager.  "She has made a tremendous impact on our morning newscasts, and we look forward to her contributions at 12, 4 and 5 p.m."

She leaves the morning newscast on Friday, November 22.

Forgany joined KENS 5 in April 2010 from KLFY News 10 Lafayette, Louisiana.

The University of Houston grad started her broadcasting career with News24Houston and ABC13 KTRK.

Sarah Forgany is usually the one on camera delivering the news as a KENS 5 San Antonio morning anchor. 

Recently however, "Great Day SA" turned the tables and featured Forgany's personal life and television news career on its segment "Women with Heart."

"I'm used to being the one asking the questions," Forgany posted to Facebook.  "This time I'm on the other side of the camera. I'm flattered Roma Villavicencio - KENS 5 decided to feature me for her Great Day SA "Women With Heart" segment.  Believe it or not, I was super nervous about this story because it's the first time in my career I've done something like this. Roma was so easy to talk to and I very much enjoyed it." 

Forgany gave birth to baby Bella in May 2021.

Here is the funny part. I find Forgany's Facebook page, see a photo and recognize her as one of my former co-workers! She is using a different name now so her real identity is safe with me. Turns out from her real FB page, she's been at KENS since April. I need to watch my FB news feed more closely!

Moving west...way west...Adrienne Alvarez is moving to the main evening anchor chair for KDBC "out in the west Texas town of El Paso."

Travis Herzog taken to hospital, Forgany back home

Travis Herzog had some scary moments at abc13 KTRK Friday morning, but things are better now fortunately.

Herzog is a super nice guy and he is still looking for prayers and positive thoughts. 

Also on a positive note, KENS 5 San Antonio morning anchor Sarah Forgany is out of the hospital as of today. I've been updating my post about her ICU hospitalization as updates have been provided by Deborah Knapp.

KENS 5 #1 in Morning News Ratings Race May 2020

Ratings Show Significant Growth in Evening Newscasts

The morning newscast is helmed by veteran anchors Sarah Forgany, Barry Davis, Audrey Castoreno and meteorologist Paul Mireles.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio viewers have made KENS 5 Eyewitness News This Morning the city’s most watched morning newscast in the recently completed May Nielsen ratings race. In preliminary results released by Nielsen, the CBS station led viewership from 4:30 to 7 a.m. in Total Households as well as the key Adults 25-54 demographic (the main advertiser target audience for news programming.)

This May win in multiple key demographics, including Total Viewers, is the station’s first since 2009.

The morning newscast, helmed by veteran anchors Sarah Forgany, Barry Davis, Audrey Castoreno and meteorologist Paul Mireles, has seen significant growth over the past several months, culminating in the May win.

In February, KENS 5 took first place in Adults 25-54 from 4:30 to 6 a.m.

“We have created a newscast that truly represents the people of San Antonio. During the last few months, we have given viewers critical updates on the coronavirus response, along with signature segments such as ‘Verify,’ ‘Who’s Hiring’ and ‘Texas Outdoors,’” said Jack Acosta, KENS 5 executive news director. “I couldn’t be prouder of the hard work being done by every single person working the early shift at KENS 5.”

In addition to the win in the morning, KENS 5 saw significant viewership growth in its 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts compared with May 2019.

KENS 5’s evening newscasts feature Deborah Knapp, Aaron Wright, Sharon Ko, weather chief Bill Taylor and sportscaster Joe Reinagel.

TV anchors broadcast from home

Houston news anchors are staying home, but still delivering the news on TV

Thanks to COVID-19, TV anchors are starting to stay home and do the news. No fancy sets or advanced lighting needed. Technology has made it possible to be deliver the news with a phone thanks to companies like LiveU and Dejero.

So far, I have seen instances of KHOU 11's evening anchor Len Cannon broadcasting from home. KHOU's Brittany Aucion also produced Cannon's show from home.

KENS 5 San Antonio morning anchor Sarah Forgany is also broadcasting from her home. Since originally writing this post, I have heard and observed that TEGNA stations have a policy to keep one anchor broadcasting from home. Add KHOU's Brandi Smith into the mix.

Meanwhile, with a more high tech setup, FOX 26 KRIV morning anchor Sally MacDonald was using a higher end camera.

Before Houston meteorologists started broadcasting remotely, the first I saw do it was NBC 6 WTVJ Miami morning meteorologist Angie Lassman has been doing just that. She posted an Instagram story on how she did it. Her laptop remotely accessed the station's weather computer so she could forecast/design the graphics while one phone put her on camera and another dialed into IFB so she could hear the producers and on air feed.

Audrey Castoreno re-joins KENS 5 San Antonio mornings

Audrey Castoreno returns to the KENS 5 San Antonio morning newscast from 5 to 7am beginning Monday, January 6, 2025 to co-anchor the news with Barry Davis, meteorologist Paul Mireles and traffic anchor Jessica Coombs.

"Mornings have always held a special place in my heart, and this team truly feels like family," Castoreno said in a statement. "I’m both excited and honored to take on this new role and to once again be part of San Antonio’s morning routine."

Castoreno takes over for Sarah Forgany who left the AM shift in November 2024 to co-anchor the noon and 4 p.m. newscasts with Castoreno and the 5 p.m. newscast with Deborah Knapp. So essentially, Forgany and Castoreno are doing a shift swap. 

No stranger to the morning San Antonio news, Castoreno previously anchored the 4:30 a.m., but moved to the Noon newscast and "First at Four" newscasts in November 2021.

Castoreno joined KENS 5 in August 2015.

Before her career in San Antonio television, the Sam Houston State University graduate worked for KWES in Midland-Odessa, KAVU in Victoria and interned with FOX 26 KRIV Houston. A native Houstonian, she began mastering the fundamentals of TV reporting at just 16 years old as part of the Dobie News program at J. Frank Dobie High School.

Castoreno has earned three Lone Star EMMY Awards for her work at KENS 5 and was recognized by the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters Association (TAPB) in both 2013 and 2014. And I won't tell anyone if you won't, but she once ate a live scorpion on air!

In her personal life, Castoreno welcomed her first daughter, Aurora, in October 2020 and her second daughter, Cora Grace, in January 2024.

"Audrey will be an excellent addition to our stellar morning news team," added Tom Cury, KENS 5 president and general manager. "She has a wonderful ability to connect with the audience as well as with her co-anchors, which makes Audrey a joy to watch."

"Audrey is already well known to our morning viewers and has worked for years with Barry, Paul and Jessica," said Jack Acosta, KENS 5 news director. "Our morning news has seen significant increases in audience this past year, and we’re excited to see what’s next for this team."

What's up with KENS 5 in the morning?
Reporter and noon anchor Sarah Forgany has been helming the early news next to Fred Lozano of late instead of usual anchorwoman Vicki Buffolino.
