Isiah Carey gets 'Uncensored' about 'bug in mouth' video & more

Isiah Factor: Uncensored returns to FOX 26 KRIV tonight for election time

Last August, I was standing with Houston TV journalist Isiah Carey after a live broadcast of his Isiah Factor: Uncensored show in the parking lot of the Ragin Cajun Restaurant when it happened. A guy drove up, leaned out the window and asked him about his infamous "bug in mouth" YouTube video.

RELATED

In fact, the FOX 26 KRIV reporter says he gets asked about it everyday.

"I was walking along Hollywood Boulevard in LA one night while covering Empire and out of the blue two Californians came up to me [and] asked if I was the bug reporter," Carey told mikemcguff.com. "They were so excited and asked to take pictures. A third person also approached me in Los Angeles that same night with the same question. That video gets new life every month."

At first, Carey was distraught when the old outtake from his days at KARK 4 in Little Rock, Arkansas showed up online and went super viral. He wouldn't even talk about it. Then he embraced it. A decision that has put him on the cover of The Houston Press and all the way to a guest spot on Comedy Central's TOSH.0.

"It's a badge of honor now because it allows people to see me as a regular person just like them...a person who could also lose it from time to time," Carey told me.

In a time when local television news stations across the country race to show you the latest viral video, Carey is the viral video. But not in just the obvious way. It's also because Carey is very local. Check out his YouTube channel at "TheHoustonFactor" and you'll see Houston-area stories he's covered that have hundreds of thousands of views.

Local is a mindset that Carey embodies. When many TV stories are now about the latest diet crazes or plastic surgeries sweeping the US, Carey is all about the "L" word. When it hits quitting time, Carey doesn't stop working when he retires to his home in The Woodlands. Sometimes he covers a story with just his phone.

"It means keeping my phone on around the clock, taking time to hear any stranger on the street out, and most importantly following up," Carey explained. "It takes a lot of time and effort but it's worth it."

While originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Carey might as well hail from the Houston area in terms of sources and his caring attitude about his adopted community.

"I bought a cash SUV to use for carrying my news equipment and it also helps with taking some of the miles off my everyday car," Carey admitted.

"The Factor Mobile" as I just dubbed it, was at the Isiah Factor: Uncensored broadcast that hot August night. In its cargo bay were air conditioning units. Carey was in the process of organizing this donation for some elderly viewers to beat the summer heat. He was about to personally deliver them that weekend. This is why in the past I blogged Isiah Carey is the new Marvin Zindler.

Clearly KRIV management has noticed Carey's work ethic since they've given him his own news segment. It's a block of time where Carey covers what he wants and is usually getting help for viewers in need.

Fighting for the little guy...just like Marvin.

That segment led to the Isiah Factor: Uncensored which took over the last half hour of the station's 9pm newscast Friday nights last summer. The live show tackled the hot news stories of the day with general conversation and lively debates. The show returns tonight for election time.

"We usually pick the big story and dive in deep with colorful experts who are not the usual talking heads," Carey said.

The "Uncensored" title came from the fact the show is live and anything can happen.

"We are live from a restaurant/bar, and at times, guests will partake in food and drinks which loosens them up and has led to heated arguments," Carey said. "Rapper Willie D of the Geto Boys called Donald Trump an 'asshole' on air. People just seem to be very comfortable in the setting even though we're completely live."

The show has made some unforgettable TV moments for FOX 26 staffers.

"My favorite show moment was getting the brutal honest truth from a Houston billionaire about which races would be willing to do manual labor in one of his warehouses," Carey said. "That billionaire was Farouk Shami. He was brutally honest and said what he felt."

"Had to put my vote in for this on - Nikki Araguz on the HERO (Houston Equal Rights Ordinance) or more popularly known as the 'bathroom ordinance,' where trans-genders would be allowed to self-identify whether they choose to use the men’s or women’s public restroom," KRIV Vice President & General Manager D'Artagnan Bebel told mikemcguff.com.

FOX 26 KRIV assistant news director Howard Dorsey says he came up with the idea for the show more than a year ago.

"The show had to be gritty, relevant, and compelling," Dorsey told mikemcguff.com. "It had to have a dash of social media, the hot talker of the day, and some sports (we called it the two minute drill). The key ingredient would have to be the host of the show, if it was going to work. Isiah Carey was hands down the guy.

"I believe Carey’s range is unlimited. He wears many hats, and is an awesome storyteller. We sat down one day and hammered out a format to pitch to my News Director Bob Morford and the General Manager D’Artagnan Bebel."

The FOX Television Station believes this kind of programming is important to keep connected with Houston television viewers.

"We are facing ever increasing competition for peoples’ scarce time and their information consumption and behaviors have been radically altered with the advent of digital and social media," Bebel told me. "If we are to remain relevant to our consumers as a provider of information, we must innovate and have a strong brand in the digital and social space, or go the way of the dinosaurs.

"Isiah has been very successful in building a strong brand as a reporter. We simply recognized that and capitalized on it by coming up with a brand name for him (originally THE ISIAH FACTOR). As any smart brand does over time, it evolves and creates brand extensions. Initially the once a week segment in the newscast, and the summer run of half hour news specials."

More than 8 million...yes I wrote 8 million views later...Houston blogger and Fox 26 KRIV reporter Isiah Carey AKA The Insite is going national with Daniel Tosh on Comedy Central. It's all due to his famous YouTube videos:

After two years of talks and negotiations The Insite is finally making an appearance on Comedy Central. It was about two years ago when that infamous Youtube video from 1996 - yes 1996 surfaced and it caught the attention of some Hollywood producers. Those producers were with the show Tosh.0. The Insite also posted some photos from his big Los Angeles weekend with Tosh.0. I hope he doesn't forget us little people!

Is Fox 26 KRIV about to get that Fox edge?

OK...this new Fox 26 KRIV promo is not actually about The Insite blog (I cannot help but write Isiah Carey AKA The Insite in its full form), but it is about reporter Isiah Carey. In fact we learn about the 'Isiah Factor.'

I like this promo. For a Fox owned station, Fox 26 has never looked very Fox-ified to me. You know, flashy graphics, youthful skewing news programming and talent (KPRC 2 out did KRIV 26 in this area during the 90s). This new Isiah Carey AKA The Insite promo bucks that thought.

Supposedly the station hired a new hot editor from DC. Maybe his whiz bang approach signifies a flashier look for Fox 26.

Speaking of Fox 26, the mikemcguff.com blog actually made an appearance in a KRIV promo. It was for the station's election coverage last November. My blog was quoted...the voice guy read my words on TV. 'mikemcguff.com' was cited on screen. I should post that video one day. It was funny considering I am a freelance reporter at 39 KIAH.

Fox 26 KRIV gives Isiah Carey AKA The Insite news segment

As a blogger, I was pleasantly surprised to see Isiah Carey AKA The Insite get his own blog segment on Fox 26 KRIV. That's right, at 5pm everyday (and in other KRIV newscasts at times too), the Isiah Factor comes on the air.

"This is the most fun I've had on TV in a while," Carey told mikemcguff.com. "It gives me a chance to tell the quirky stories and all of the crazy things that happen behind the scenes. So far I've had the McDonald's customer who went off on an employee over a Hot and Spicy burger and the news crew who looks suspect."

Speaking of news crews, any Insite reader will be able to tell you that Carey always has a great behind the scenes look into the Houston TV news world and his own KRIV stories. For example, you can watch the above clip where Carey and photographer Torrey T-Dub Walker were shooting a story in Meyerland and the cops were called on them. Here is the blog version.

"It wasn't my idea, but the brainchild of my News Director Tom Doerr and General Manager D'art Bebel," Carey told me. "They said, 'Isiah, we want you to put some of the stories from the Insite on TV.' I was like a kid in a candy store when they said that."

I'm impressed that KRIV has such a supportive role in this. Most stations around the country would not let a reporter have their own blog segment on air, much less about a personal blog. If a segment like this was actually allowed, most likely a station would want that blog to be on its own website so it collected the ad money.

I used to work for a TV station where a manager would stop me in the halls and say they were reading my blog everyday. That actually sent a chill down my spine because I knew they weren't reading because they liked it. Those types of incidents put a chilling effect on your blog and work.  In fact, now that blogs have been around awhile and we can look back in hindsight, I would recommend to TV station employees (and anyone at a corporation) not to write a personal blog.  It's probably not worth your career.

Back to Carey, you might have recognized the Isiah Factor branding from a promo the station launched earlier this year.

Isiah Carey issues statement concerning DWI arrest

Chron.com and the Houston Chronicle first reported that FOX 26 Houston KRIV "Isiah Factor Uncensored" host Isiah Carey was arrested Friday, accused of driving while intoxicated in Montgomery County.

Sunday night, Carey posted about the incident on social media:

"First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who has reached out. Your support, your prayers, and your belief in me mean more than I can ever express. To my family, my Fox 26 family, my friends, and my community—you have been my rock, and I am forever grateful.

For years, I have dedicated my life to this work—to telling the stories that matter, standing up for what’s right, and fighting for my community. It’s a responsibility I’ve never taken lightly, and I will continue to show up. That has never and will never change.

But in that fight, I lost sight of something just as important—myself. I put my own well-being last, convinced that if I just kept pushing forward, everything would be fine. But you cannot pour from an empty cup. Strength isn’t just about showing up for others—it’s also about showing up for yourself. And it’s time I do that.

I am also making the choice to prioritize my health, my well-being, and my future. Because the best version of me—the one my family, my friends, and my community deserve—is one that is whole.

I ask for your continued support, your understanding, and your prayers. This is not a setback. This is a turning point. And I promise you this—I will come out of this stronger, wiser, and more determined than ever.

With gratitude,

Isiah"

Commenters ranging from ABC13 KTRK evening anchor Erica Simon to FOX 26's CoCo Dominguez offered their support for the channel 26 host.

The Chron reported this is Carey's second DWI arrest.  The other taking place in 2018.

Carey joined FOX 26 in 2001 as a reporter and worked his way to hosting his own late night show.

Two Houston TV reporters remixed by famed PBS remixer

Two Houston TV reporters have been remixed! And it's by the guy that has added beats to Mr. Rogers, Julia Child and Bob Ross for PBS. Former KTRK 13 reporter Thom Dickerson and internationally famous "Bug in Mouth" superstar Fox 26 KRIV reporter Isiah Carey, AKA The Insite, are both the stars of this latest media mix.

- Did KPRC traffic reporter meltdown on live TV?

But *HERE IS A WARNING,* this new Houston related video is called "WTF" for a reason so it is NSFW, but a very catchy tune.

Symphony of Science's John D. Boswell, the man behind the music, told me he thinks he found both clips on Reddit.

"I often save funny clips I come across on YouTube for potential remixing later, and sometimes two or more videos will be similar and conducive to combining into one remix, which was the case with these two reporters," Boswell who also goes by melodysheep told mikemcguff.com. "Not only did they have similar mannerisms, but they were very passionate and excited which makes for good remix material."

The very old clip of Dickerson has been making rounds (fast forward to 2:30 to see Dickerson) on YouTube blooper channels for about a year it seems. Clearly, this video never aired on TV, but must have been recorded while waiting for a live shot or stand-up taping. What we do know is that someone obviously held on to this rant on tape for many years.

Another tape that has landed Isiah Carey AKA The Insite on Comedy Central, Jimmy Kimmel and given him Facebook fan pages in Europe, was video shot in 1996 while Carey was doing stand-ups at a former station.

So the lesson is, all of those blooper tapes that stations have sitting on dusty shelves across America, are ripe for YouTube video views. Be careful out there in front of a camera.

Of course Isiah Carey is still is on Fox 26 with his own segment. Dickerson went on to do the outdoors/sportsman beat for KTRK and then went on to work at HISD.

As for Boswell, his TV remixes have given him quite a bit of fame too. His work has been featured on NPR, Wired, The Scientist, Attack of the Show and many other media sites.

Isiah Carey's mural

Isiah Carey is getting his own mural!

"Wow...I'm speechless...One of the biggest honors I've received," Carey posted on Facebook. "Artist Lee Washington did this mural for me on Irvington... I didn't expect it but just wow.... He says it's almost done...thank you."

I have people from all over the world hitting my blog up to see more about Carey and his "bug in mouth" video.  That's why I included a photo of the two of us together to prove I actually have met him! Makes me more legit to his global fanbase!

The next Marvin Zindler of Houston TV is...

A Marvin Zindler look-alike on PBS inspires me

 photo marvin_jimsteranko_zpsce32a582.jpg

We were watching the PBS documentary Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle when my wife noticed a KTRK abc13 Marvin Zindler doppelgänger.

Marvin Zindler
Marvin Zindler
Former Marvel Comics' artist Jim Steranko popped up on the screen and no doubt he has a striking resemblance to Houston's beloved White Knight in Blue Shades of Action 13 fame.

Zindler still lives on Houston TV in a way since Jeff Ehling does a restaurant report, in place of Marvin, at KTRK abc13 and Amy Davis also does one at KPRC 2.

I think the only reason Houston TV viewers cared about a restaurant report was because of Zindler's showbiz antics and his famous "Slime in the Ice Machine" chant. KTRK should at least play the old clip of Marvin yelling his famous phrase at the end of Ehling's report.

This got me thinking - who is the next Marvin Zindler of Houston TV? Who in Houston television news right now can captivate, inform, offer help and entertain audiences? I've been wanting to write this for a year now, so thanks to Mr. Steranko, here it is.

In my opinion, the closest thing we have to a new Marvin Zindler...drum roll please...

How Fox 26 KRIV's Isiah Carey lost weight

Just in time for November television sweeps, Fox 26 KRIV lets us in on how Isiah Carey aka "The Insite" lost all of his weight. Here's a hint, it was the old fashioned way.

If you work in media the best way to lose weight is to quit your job. I dropped 10 pounds without trying after leaving KTRK 13. Think about it...reduced stress, no more free food or snack machines calling your name. Of course you could also insert jokes here about how if you quit, you'll have a lot less money to spend on food!

UPDATE
Isiah Carey said on Twitter I was wrong for saying this story ran on purpose during sweeps. But I don't see how I am wrong. Carey tweets, "The managers approached me and asked if I would do the segment."

OK, sounds like it was put on the old sweeps calendar to air in November. I don't get the problem.

Houston Independent School District resolution honors FOX 26 KRIV for Isiah Carey television special on bullying

FOX 26 KRIV was honored by the Houston Independent School District last night at its board meeting.

Reporter Isiah Carey, General Manager D'Artagnan Bebel and Vice President of News Bob Morford were issued a resolution by HISD for their efforts in addressing bullying with students in the community.

KRIV was approached by HISD Trustee Wanda Adams in March 2015 to cover student bullying. The station responded by producing a town hall meeting with Westbury High School students. The station says it was shocked at the students' honesty concerning pain caused by bullying.

When Carey returned to the station with the video, Bebel called for a half hour special report on the subject.

"We do more hours of local news than any other station in the Houston market," Bebel said on the station's newscast. "And as such, we have the ability to go deeper. I know it's corny sounding, but in reality, it's something we want to do, and we have done in the past."

The now 2015 Lone Star EMMY nominated Diversity in the Classroom aired in April 2015 and has since been shown in classrooms across the Houston region. Some schools even added the program to their curriculum to address the bullying problem.

"When we come across a story like this that needs to be told, that begs to be told, this is something that's not only an honor, it's a duty to get this sort of story out there," Morford said added.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. For more info, go to stompoutbullying.org.

How FOX 26 KRIV's show Isiah Factor: Uncensored came to be

Houston TV has most famous bug in mouth reporter...but there are others

I don't have to tell you that Houston has the most famous bug-in-mouth television news reporter of all time: FOX 26 KRIV Isiah Factor: Uncensored host Isiah Carey.

The above video has racked up 4.5 million views. To compare numbers, Harris County had a population of 4,698,619 residents as of July 1, 2018.

"I was walking along Hollywood Boulevard in LA one night while covering Empire and out of the blue two Californians came up to me [and] asked if I was the bug reporter," Carey told mikemcguff.com in 2015. "They were so excited and asked to take pictures. A third person also approached me in Los Angeles that same night with the same question. That video gets new life every month."

But other TV news reporters are also having their own insect fights on camera.

Take KVUE Austin reporter, anchor & digital producer Pattrik Perez, who had his own TV bug battle this week!

Perez's tweet led to WNBC New York reporter Adam Harding sharing his own encounter.

Then Ian Pirich shared this moment.

You never know where the annoying moment will take you.

Carey told me he was initially upset when the old KARK 4 Little Rock, Arkansas video surfaced in the early days of YouTube. Now, he embraces it, which has put him on the cover of The Houston Press and in a guest spot on Comedy Central's TOSH.0.

"It's a badge of honor now because it allows people to see me as a regular person just like them...a person who could also lose it from time to time," Carey told me.

Isiah Carey's Insite hits the paper

The Houston Chronicle found Isiah Carey's The Insite and writes a nice profile on it. Sounds like Isiah is the man behind the curtain of Fox 26 KRIV's web site:
Carey's bosses at Fox encourage his blogging. And when the station finally established its Web site in September 2006, they turned to Carey for help.

"As far as an Internet Web presence goes, we were the last to the party," general manager D'Artagnan Bebel said. "And Isiah's blog had been in existence for a year already. Because he'd already been doing it, because he had the experience curve, we were trying to mine his experiences to help us build a presence online."

I guess he gets to blog at work. Must be nice.

I have noticed The Insite changing gears. It's now less edgy and almost has a small town newspaper feel. That's good. He's covering news the big boys aren't. With the numbers he's getting, pretty soon he won't even need the TV station anymore.

Mycah Hatfield: Houston's new bug in mouth reporter?

Mycah Hatfield, a reporter for abc13 KTRK, had her own "bug in mouth moment."

Naturally I call it that because of the most famous bug in mouth TV reporter in the world, Isiah Carey.

"First, it was the armadillo," Hatfield tweeted.  "Now, it’s a flying roach. Could the critters please leave me alone!? (And OF COURSE this interaction was caught on camera. Why would it not be?)"

After a careful slow-mo review of Hatfield's Twitter video, what someone says off camera was a "cockroach," luckily does not actually fly into her mouth.  Instead it lands on her dress.

As I have blogged before,  Hatfield grew up in Houston, so she should be used to Texas-sized cockroaches, although as a native myself, you never really ever get used to them.

A cockroach is one thing I personally do not want crawling on me either!

Isiah Carey's Fox 26 KRIV friends giving him YouTube hassle

In case you didn't know, KRIV Fox 26's Houston reporter Isiah Carey is a YouTube Internet star, but probably for reasons he isn't exactly excited about.

Last May the videos of a young Isiah 'The Insite' Carey virally moved around the world and even appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live from what I understand. The videos look like someone from his old station found a copy of the blooper tape (most stations have them) and put The Insite's bloopers online.

The videos are listed under the title Roving Reporter Etiquette Lesson 1-6. CLICK HERE TO SEE THEM

The most famous one is where The Insite is trying to do a standup and a bug gets in his mouth. Another one a dog barks at him. While another we see The Insite's humor as he pokes fun at folks who don't want to be interviewed in a classic MOS ambush.

Carey never posted the videos on his blog so I thought I wouldn't add insult to injury and I never posted about them here.

KTRK abc13 reporter claims assault by Dan Patrick supporters

KTRK abc13 reporter Deborah Wrigley supposedly protects fellow reporter Foti Kallergis at Lt. Governor elect Dan Patrick's watch party

As Texans come down from Tuesday night's political buzz, we learn from some Houston TV reporters covering the election, there was some kind of an incident at Lt. Governor elect Dan Patrick's watch party involving the media.

Foti Kallergis
Foti Kallergis
Last night, KTRK abc13 reporter Foti Kallergis tweeted: "Nice! Just got assaulted by someone live on air."

According to Fox 26 KRIV reporter Isiah "Factor" Carey AKA The Insite, who snapped a photo on his phone, Kallergis was allegedly shoved while on air at Lt. Governor Elect Dan Patrick's Houston watch party. Apparently, the male and female Patrick supporters accused of trying to stop Kallergis from broadcasting, were angry the reporter went live on channel 13 during a prayer.

Houston Chronicle photographer Smiley Pool also got a shot of the incident you can see here.

Luckily for Kallergis, KTRK reporter Deborah Wrigley was there to protect him from the man according to Carey. Wrigley told Carey that a woman called her a "f------ b----."

Since the event apparently happened live on KTRK, if anyone has a clip, send it to me.

UPDATE 11/10/2014
Mediaite has picked up the story and has the KTRK footage.

I have asked Patrick Chief of Staff Logan Spence and KTRK for comment. If/when I hear back, I will post the responses here.
