Tony Canales to helm KXAS and KXTX DFW

Tony Canales

NBCUniversal Local, the division of NBCUniversal that includes 43 NBC/Telemundo owned stations, five regional sports networks and three multicast networks, today announced that Tony Canales is leaving his role as President/General Manager of Telemundo Houston / KTMD and Telemundo Nuevo México / KASA to be the new President/GM of NBC 5 / KXAS and Telemundo 39 / KXTX in the Dallas-Fort Worth DMA, following the retirement of Tom Ehlmann, the stations’ longtime General Manager.

UPDATE JANUARY 25, 2023
Jose Flores to lead Telemundo Houston KTMD

Hank Guerrero is vacating his role as Vice President of Sales for NBC Connecticut / WVIT and Telemundo Connecticut / WRDM to lead WVIT/WRDM as President/General Manager, following General Manager Diane Hannes’ retirement.

Canales and Guerrero’s new roles take effect immediately.  They will be responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the respective stations, and will manage all operations including the news, digital, sales, marketing/promotions, community affairs and technology/operations departments.  Both will report to Valari Staab, Chairman, NBCUniversal Local and will work closely with Manuel Martinez, President, Telemundo Station Group.

“Tony and Hank are exceptional. They are collaborative and innovative, and represent the next generation of leaders in local broadcasting,” said Staab.  “I’m excited to see what each, along with their respective North Texas and Hartford teams, will do to serve our communities.”

A Broadcasting & Cable 2022 “General Manager of the Year,” Canales joined NBCUniversal in 2012.  He takes the helm of NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 after leading Telemundo Houston for over a decade, a period that included significant expansion of KTMD’s news programs, a new weather and investigative team, and a consumer unit that has returned more than $2.2 million (and counting) to consumers.  Canales has managed the station’s transformative expansion from linear to multiple platforms to help reach more audiences.  KTMD has continuously performed as a top ratings performer among its key audiences, while remaining closely connected to the communities it serves through strategic partnerships.

In October 2021, Canales’ role expanded to oversight of KASA, a new Telemundo owned station that in less than one year began delivering live, locally produced Spanish-language weekday newscasts to local audiences.  At KASA, Canales also oversaw the station’s digital and mobile app launches to help bring important local news and information to digitally-connected audiences.  The ‘Telemundo Nuevo México’ app is the only Spanish-language news and weather app that covers the Albuquerque-Santa Fe market, and its Spanish-language weather alerts are a first for the DMA.

“Tony and Hank bring with them new ideas and perspectives, and will build upon the great work that Tom and Diane have done for our stations.  Both are really great to work with, and are very passionate about our work for our Spanish-speaking audiences,” added Martinez.

Before joining NBCUniversal, Canales led several TV stations in Texas including KYAZ in Houston, as well as, KWEX and KNIC in San Antonio. Before this, Canales was General Sales Manager of KWEX and KNIC, and National Sales Manager of KAKW and KBVO in Austin.  Before launching his career in local broadcasting, Canales worked at an agency acquired by Global Hue Advertising as an Accounts Supervisor.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Texas A&M University.  Canales and his family will be relocating from Houston to North Texas.

Guerrero brings 20 years of experience in leadership roles to his new role at NBC Connecticut and Telemundo Connecticut, including his decade-long run in sales positions with NBCUniversal’s TV stations in Hartford and Boston.  At WVIT/WRDM, Guerrero worked as Vice President of Sales, National Sales Manager and Local Sales Manager.  As Vice President of Sales, he successfully combined the stations sales efforts to offer cohesive strategies to clients across multiple platforms, and in two languages, resulting in revenue growth.  In addition, Guerrero has overseen local sales execution over the Tokyo and Beijing Olympics, Super Bowl LVI, and the 2022 World Cup.  At WBTS/WNEU, he worked as National Sales Director and launched the national sales department for NBCUniversal’s newly launched Boston stations.  He is a member of NBCUniversal Local’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council, a sponsor of the division’s “She Leads” program that helps to prepare female sales professionals for sales and management leadership roles across the division.  He is also a Champion of the division’s “Sales Associate Program,” which helps to recruit and develop talent of diverse backgrounds for sales positions across the division.

Before joining NBCUniversal, Guerrero worked at Beasley Broadcast Group as Director of Interactive Sales and Senior Account Manager overseeing advertising, sponsorship and sports affiliation sales for the group’s radio stations in Miami, FL.  Guerrero launched his career in local broadcasting at WVTM-TV as an Account Manager.  He earned a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University.

Staab and Martinez added, “Tom and Diane have led long and successful careers in local broadcasting, mentoring and impacting many along the way.  Tom helped us to create the largest bilingual TV newsroom in North Texas, resulting in more comprehensive storytelling and weather forecasting for our English and Spanish-speaking viewers in the market.  Diane leaves our division taking on leading leadership roles in Marketing and most recently as GM of our NBC and Telemundo Connecticut stations, where she helped us solidify our operation as the only bilingual TV newsroom in the state.  We are grateful for their service and wish both the very best in their well-deserved retirement.”

Jerry Vazquez on the rise of Telemundo Houston

KTMD News Director Jerry Vazquez: "Do not try and invent the wheel again, but go back to the basics of TV news reporting."

Ubaldo Martinez Lead Sports Anchor/Alejandro Mendoza and Crystal Ayala anchors/Meteorologist Carlos Robles  and in the back VP of news Jerry Vazquez

A few years ago, Telemundo Houston KTMD was in need of a re-build. The station was hubbing news out of Dallas, with some local reporters.

When Comcast bought the station's parent company, NBCUniversal, resources started coming the Houston TV station's way.

Now, KTMD has climbed the Nielsen ratings chart to the top.

RELATED
The rise of Houston Spanish-language TV

Part of that re-build came with the hire of news director Jerry Vazquez from abc13 KTRK back in 2014.

Vazquez has worked his way up through Texas TV stations such as KGNS Laredo, KVDA San Antonio, KMOL (now WOAI) San Antonio and KMID Midland.

I asked Vazquez about his journey over the last four years.

Mike McGuff: What was it like moving from English-language news to Spanish-language?

Jerry Vazquez: Not much of a difference, except strategy and what we cover. English Language News may focus on a certain topic that may not be relevant to Spanish language viewers. [For example] education, immigration, retirement, health care, social security, Medicare, etc. I think what sets us aside from the rest, is the amount of community events we participate in, our community involvement with our school initiatives program, plus our EN La Prepa involvement.

MM: You had been in news management for a long time before becoming a news director again, did you have ideas that you were itching to try once you got in the driver's seat again?

JV: Having been a news director before, and moving back into the role, of course of you have your own ideas of how a department should run. I always tell my staff I didn’t create news or how a news department should run, but after 32 years in the business, having done every job in the newsroom, you kind of pick best practices from the leaders you learned from and avoid the ones you know didn’t work for a former boss. Do not try and invent the wheel again, but go back to the basics of TV news reporting. It’s the fundamentals that made a lot of stations number one.

MM: What have been the challenges of helping to build a station's news department?

JV: Patience is huge and having a boss Like Tony Canales (Telemundo Houston KTMD President & General Manager) who shares the same vision as well as the company support. The challenges were there, but having the support from a great company Like Comcast-NBCUniversal that not only provided the resources and investments needed, but the support and patience to allow you to rebuild the product and the brand. Recruiting the right people for the right jobs, rebuilding systems and changing the culture from within and making sure that your news staff buys into your philosophy of reporting news.

JV: Part of hiring the right people was providing them with the training and leadership they needed. I am not a micro-manager. Everyone I hired was hired because of the experience they bring to the table. You have to let them do their job. My job as a manager to my team is to coach and help them take it to the next level. NBCUniversal believes that if you hire the best people and treat them well, you will succeed which we have demonstrated at Telemundo Houston day after day. I, along with all our managers at KTMD, install and support a culture of collaboration and inclusion. When you have the right team in place together you can accomplish anything. In my opinion we have assembled a team of the best producers, anchors, reporters, photographers and assignments desk! We recently updated our tagline to “Trabajando Para Ti” or “Working for you.” Day in and day out, the entire news team, marketing team, sales teams and management come together to work hard ensure that we follow and embrace the NBCU creed which is to produce, create and deliver content so compelling it informs, entertains, and helps shape the world via integrity, creativity, fostering a teamwork culture, and encouraging a pioneer spirit while encouraging staff to have an ownership mentality.

MM: Did the rise to the top of the ratings even surprise you?

JV: Yes and no. Hispanic TV in the past had been underrated and under served and not taken seriously in the field or by civic leaders. This has changed since when I first worked for Telemundo in the early 90’s. We had to wait for soundbites in Spanish until after the English station got everything they needed. Today the press conferences are held in English and Spanish Giving us us the same opportunity to run them live.

During my career in TV, I learned that it takes a team of dedicated professionals who all support the brand and news philosophy to make it work, then you need to make sure that other departments in the station are running alongside you with the same vision and mission. Tony [Canales] has done that. The rise to the top, as you call it, started when Tony, who came on board two years prior to my arrival, started hiring managers that supported a winning attitude. For example, one of Tony’s first hires was our Marketing Director JC Perez, one of the best and finest in the field. I learned from my first news director job in West Texas that the news director and marketing director need to be joined at the hip daily. Then you add to to this formula a very supportive GM, and bingo you will see results. There is no doubt or question that each department in this station is in sync with the vision and mission. The results speak for themselves!

MM: What do your former colleagues say about the ratings your are getting?

JV: I have great friends (former colleagues) that I still talk to and have lunch or dinner often, many are still there, others have moved on. Every time I visit with them, either in person or by phone, they have nothing but kind words and great praise about our success and the great team we have build. They are not surprised because our product is about story telling, content driven and providing the viewers what they want to see.

The rise of Houston Spanish-language TV

Univision 45 KXLN and Telemundo 47 KTMD are pushing Spanish-language TV to the top of Houston ratings in the fourth largest Spanish TV market in the country

Spanish-language TV news ratings in Houston are, what can I say, getting muy caliente! So much so that Univision 45 KXLN and Telemundo 47 KTMD are fighting for the top spot during the late news. That even means over their English-language newscast counterparts.

And I've heard the Houston English-stations have taken notice. Just look at the 2016 Lone Star EMMY wins for example.

"At the close of the October 2016 survey period, our station was once again the most-watched during Primetime," Tony Canales, President and General Manager, KTMD told mikemcguff.com. "Our late weekday newscast also outranked all of our local competitors."

KTMD certainly has momentum behind its back for the first time in years. Just years ago, the station was airing a newscast produced out of Dallas with a handful of Houston reporters trying to make it more local.

Now the NBC owned station is the only Spanish-language station in town to use a helicopter to cover breaking news. The station tells me it just launched a new app that features first-of-its-kind Spanish-language weather alerts. It's also launched a new consumer investigative unit called Telemundo Responde (Telemundo Responds) which fights for viewers' rights.

"The Telemundo Station Group stations have been completely transformed thanks to NBCUniversal’s investment in the stations," Canales added. "As a result, the Telemundo-owned stations have ushered in a new era in Spanish-language local news."

That era appeared to be jump started for Telemundo after Comcast's purchase of NBC and Telemundo in 2011. Afterwards, veteran anchors Martin Berlanga, Paulina Sodi and Antonio Hernandez were hired.

"For example, we launched two new weekday half-hour local newscasts (at 4 PM and 4:30 PM) in less than two years," Canales told me. The added hour of news allows Telemundo Houston to deliver more news, first. We’ve also hired newsroom staff to support the boost in news."

The hiring of newsroom staff also has caught the notice of Houston TV veterans.

One pivotal hire for the station came in the form of a KTRK abc13 manager back in 2014. Executive producer Jerry Vazquez left the ABC owned and operated station to become the Vice President of News for the NBC owned Telemundo station.

A source close to Vazquez told me the KTRK brass were insistent he would never get any ratings at his new shop. That notion has since been proven wrong.

"With more than a decade of experience working in local news in Houston, Jerry has helped our news team execute our aggressive local news strategy day-in and day-out to help Telemundo Houston be our viewers’ local station of choice," Canales said.

Vazquez's move took some TV newsers by surprise because someone leaving English-language TV to work at a Spanish-language station in Houston was not something that generally happened at the time. In fact, it was usually the opposite. Since then, other staffers have jumped from channel 13 and KPRC 2 to work at KTMD.

Sources in the newsroom tell me there are lots of good things happening at the station and the employees are excited to be apart of it all.

But it's not just English-language broadcasters making the move to KTMD, so are Spanish-language ones. Most recently Carlos Robles and Crystal Ayala have crossed the street to KTMD from Univision owned KXLN 45.

For many years, Univision 45 has owned Spanish-language viewers in Houston. Back in 2012, the station sent me a press release that was the shot heard around the Houston TV market.

In the first major sweep of the 2012-2013 television broadcast season, KXLN Univision 45 is Houston’s No. 1 broadcast station among Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 in all the major dayparts: daytime, early fringe, early news, primetime, late news and late fringe, regardless of language. KXLN Univision 45 is also the most watched station during early morning among both Adults 18-34 and Adults 18-49.

During a sweep that included extensive news coverage on a history making presidential election, KXLN’s early 5 p.m. “Noticias Univision 45 a las 5” (News 45 at 5) and late 10 p.m. local news “Noticias 45 Edición Nocturna” (News 45 Evening Edition), were the most watched local newscasts among Adults 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54.

Those types of press releases keep coming every ratings period even with its parent company experiencing turbulent times as of late.

"Univision Houston is a leader in TV and radio nationally, regardless of language, and we deliver the best news coverage, radio shows and everything in between to the community that we’re proud to serve," David Loving, Senior Vice President/General Manager of Univision Communications Inc. Houston, told mikemcguff.com. "We attract top talent by staying true to our mission of informing and empowering Hispanic America and to our goal of delivering best-in-class content day in and day out."

And no doubt KXLN has some top talent. Anchors Raul Peimbert and Michelle Galvan are both network quality because they've worked at that level. Last year, Galvan was asked to fill-in on the network's Primer Impacto.

"Top talent likes to work for top talent, and that starts with our award-winning news director Martha Kattan," Loving added. "Martha is recognized as a leader in the news business with a long pedigree of experience in both English and Spanish language. Her vast knowledge and deep contacts within the industry make her one of the most sought after people to work for. In fact, some of the people you see on the Univision Network at one point in their career either worked with or for Martha.

"While we cover the important stories of the day just as other news entities do, we go deeper into stories that are more culturally relevant to our audience—we’re their voice. Raul and Michelle and the wider news teams are members of the community they report on, this is what connects us to our viewers in such a unique and powerful way."

And that cultural context is what keeps part of the audience from switching the channel to the "Big Four" English-language network's local newscasts.

"The content in these newscasts is tailored to this audience, containing news items from their countries of origin, stories that reflect their own priorities, and with their daily lives delivered with the sensitivity, passion and tone they expect and are accustomed to," Alex López Negrete, President/CEO of López Negrete Communications told mikemcguff.com. "Spanish-language media consumers are not consuming Spanish-language media out of necessity, rather they are consuming it by choice. This choice is driven by culturally relevant content that speaks to culture and tradition that is not being delivered by general market (English-language) media."

And both KXLN and KTMD have a large audience to connect with.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population in Houston is close to 45% with no signs of slowing down.

The population that speaks Spanish at home grew about 8.5% between 2010 and 2015. The younger group, ages 5-17 grew by 2.4% while 18-64 year olds grew by 4.3%. However the largest growth goes to the population ages 65 and over who grew by 30%.

"This paradigm of Spanish-language media growth and of Telemundo and Univision stations in Houston claiming the #1 and #2 10 p.m. newscasts (regardless of language) is not new," López Negrete explained. "Houston boasts a very large Hispanic population and has for quite a long time. This enormous audience is making a conscious choice to consume Spanish-language television, and is funneled into TWO networks/channels vs. four major ones."

That large Hispanic population actually separates Spanish-Language TV from the English-language world. While Houston is ranked number eight in the Nielsen TV Designated Market Area (DMA) list, it's actually the fourth largest Spanish TV market in the country behind Miami (#3), New York (#2) and Los Angeles (#1).

López Negrete says Spanish-language media reached “scale” two decades ago, particularly in major cities such as Houston, starting with radio in the 1980s, and then television in the 1990s and beyond.

"It is important to note that too much has been said, written and predicted about the decline of Spanish-language media, as the growth of the segment is coming from U.S.-born Latinos – but evidence points to the contrary," López Negrete said. "It is fact that Spanish remains strong and stable, as has Spanish-language media."

López Negrete points to a Simmons National Hispanic Consumer Study (NHCS) that says among Hispanics 18 to 43 years of age, 83% speak Spanish at home, a number that has stayed statistically steady for the last seven years, and the number of folks who speak English and Spanish equally has actually increased from 11% to 23% in that same seven-year span.

Since Spanish-language television ratings are high, advertisers are taking notice.

"If advertisers want to cater to and truly engage with this very lucrative and growing audience, they must use Spanish-language media to do so," López Negrete said. "Many advertisers see that Hispanics account for over 25% of their growth and are high-level consumers of products and services across category after category, especially those related to family lifestyle brands. "

But even with a steadily growing audience, López Negrete says advertisers have under spent when it comes to Spanish-language viewers. Plus, there is an expectation that Spanish-language ratings points should be cheaper than in the English-language advertising world.

He advises companies to target younger viewers and even be willing to pay a premium for their attention.

"The spoils are going to those advertisers who have been enlightened and are spending to the opportunity that this segment and the Spanish-language media channels represent," López Negrete added. "And it is those early adopter brands that will enjoy the deep brand loyalty that this consumer offers."

TELEMUNDO HOUSTON HIGHLIGHTS

· Launched two new weekday half-hour local newscasts (at 4 PM and 4:30 PM) in less than two years. The added hour of news allows Telemundo Houston to deliver more news, first. We’ve also hired newsroom staff to support the boost in news.

· We’ve invested in our digital tools and unveiled redesigned digital platforms for desktop and mobile. Our new station app, for example, features first-of-its-kind Spanish-language weather alerts. This helps viewers who are on the go, stay up-to-date with the news and information they need that may help keep their children and families safe when severe weather threatens to impact our area.

· In partnership with other local television stations, KTMD is the only Spanish-language television station in the market that incorporates helicopter coverage and delivers owned local aerial breaking news coverage to viewers in the market.

· Another enhancement that we made includes the launch of the wildly successful consumer investigative unit – Telemundo Responde (Telemundo Responds) – which is charged with standing up for consumers and answering their consumer questions directly. Launched in 2014, Telemundo Responde has expanded to 12 other markets and the units have collectively recovered more than $5 million for consumers.

UNIVISION HOUSTON HIGHLIGHTS

· We have launched a successful regional morning show from 4a-6a based in Houston and broadcast to Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. We also created the Houston Uforia Lounge: a unique performance/ activation space in the station that showcases music artists monthly and shows off the 360 power of our radio/TV/ and digital platforms.

· We developed new ways to make news available to Hispanic youth: Produced a one-of-a-kind Hispanic Millennial debate exclusively for Facebook and Twitter live. Young Hispanics represent 3 of the major political parties participated. The debate had tens of thousands of viewers.

· Produced “En 1 Minuto’’ a news capsule especially designed for our digital and social media platforms. ‘En 1 Minuto’ consists of a summary of the biggest, catchiest headlines (whether local, national or international). It is designed with our younger viewers in mind who are constantly connected and seek news online.

COZI Houston moves to channel 47.4, KUBE 57 goes shopping

COZI Houston has moved from KUBE 57.4 to Telemundo Houston KTMD channel 47.4 as of June 27, 2021.

"We have strong viewership in Houston and are eager for COZI TV fans to promptly find the network in its new home on 47.4," Telemundo Houston KTMD President & General Manager Tony Canales told mikemcguff.com.  "Houston viewers likely need to re-scan, in order to add 47.4 to their OTA channel line-up and continue enjoying their favorite COZI TV shows."

The CHARGE! diginet replaces COZI on sub-channel 57.4 and describes itself as, "featuring action programming including movies, series and sports entertainment."

COZI shows classic TV shows from various decades.

Many emails started coming in this week asking about where COZI was ending up on Houston television since its move a few days ago.

In the course of learning about the COZI move, I found out that KUBE 57 is now part of home shopping channel network so you will see that programming on the station more and more.  However, at the time of this writing, I did see that "Access Daily" was still on the station.

As a result of the shopping network direction, I was told by a KUBE 57 representative that the station decided to stop airing COZI on its sub-channel.

Canales told me that COZI TV has been with the KUBE for the last four years.

He adds since Telemundo Houston is owned by NBC Universal and so is COZI, the NBCU channels are coming together in Houston on channel 57.4.

According to my records, KUBE 57 signed on the Houston TV airwaves in 2010.

NBC 5 KXAS DFW gets 3pm and 6:30 newscasts

NBC 5 KXAS

NBC 5 KXAS Dallas-Fort Worth is adding more newscasts to its schedule following the cancellation of two longtime NBCUniversal-produced syndicated shows.

According to TVPassport, starting Monday, August 31, 2026, September 7, 2026,  KXAS will debut NBC 5 News at 3pm to replace The Kelly Clarkson Show and NBC 5 News at 6:30pm to take over for Access Hollywood.

NBC 5's Education Reporter Wayne Carter says he will anchor the 3 p.m. newscast in addition to his school reporting. No word yet on who will anchor the 6:30 North Texas newscast.

Kelly Clarkson chose to end her talk show to prioritize her kids.

Variety reported earlier this year that "Access Hollywood” and “Access Hollywood Live” as well as talk shows “Karamo” and “The Steve Wilkos Show” were all getting canceled due to audience fragmentation in the streaming age.
