KTSM 9 El Paso anchor changes 2024

In January 2024, Thompson joined KOB 4 Eyewitness News Albuquerque, New Mexico as a weekday evening anchor.

Meanwhile, also in January 2024, Natassia Paloma launched a cooking channel on YouTube:

Paloma anchored the KTSM evening newscasts, while Thompson anchored the morning news.

Paloma said on Facebook:

"After nearly six years, this is my last month at KTSM.

Thank you for always being there, rooting me on, and allowing me to share your stories.

My last day is December 15th.

I love you with all my corazon El Paso! You will always be home."

In a follow-up post after the El Paso Times wrote about her departure, Paloma said she is not leaving for another job, but will be spending quality time with her children and husband

At the time of the original announcement, husband Trevor J. Thompson appeared to be leaving for a new gig based on his X post:

"I’m entering my last month at KTSM and wanted to express my gratitude to all who have supported my family and me on this journey.

Exciting things are on the horizon, but for now, all I can say is….THANK YOU!"

Trevor joined KTSM in 2021, while Natassia was hired from KENS 5 San Antonio in 2018.

KTSM 9 El Paso makes big anchor changes

KTSM 9 News El Paso is making some major anchor changes on its news desk starting Monday, April 11, 2022.

UPDATE JANUARY 2024
Trevor Thompson joins KOB 4 Eyewitness News Albuquerque

Andy Morgan is joining Natassia Paloma on the anchor desk from his role as sports director.

He's been in the sports department at KTSM 9 since 2015. Morgan married KFOX14 and CBS 4 KDBC investigative reporter Estefania Seyffert earlier in 2022.

Sports anchors to main anchors...where have we seen that before?  Off the top of my head, I can point to KXXV 25 Waco/Temple/Killeen where, in different decades, Ray Peters and Bruce Gietzen made the transition.

"No goodbyes here, honored to be KTSM’s next evening anchor," Morgan tweeted.  "What an opportunity in a place that has become my home, a position I will bring the same drive and dedication to as I did in sports. Time to roll up my sleeves and get to work alongside this great team at #KTSM9News."

Morgan is taking over the empty anchor seat left by Daniel Marin who left for the KXAN Austin politics reporter job in September 2021. Speaking of anchoring, Marin has been filling-in recently for KXAN evening anchor Robert Hadlock who is leaving this summer.

Who is taking over for Morgan in sports?  Sports reporter Colin Deaver moves to the director role.

UPDATE: Sam Guzman is joining KTSM 9 as weekend sports anchor and weekday sports reporter.

But wait...there's more for the Nexstar Media Group Borderland TV station!

Reporter Stephanie Shields joins morning anchor Trevor Thompson on the KTSM 9 News at Noon anchor desk.

Morning reporter Karla Draksler has been promoted to weekend anchor. Draksler takes over the empty seat left recently by Christina Aguayo.

Oriana Bottaro leaves; Cristina Rodda takes over at KTSM 9 El Paso

Oriana Bottaro recently left the KTSM 9 El Paso weekend anchor desk.

Bottaro, who joined KTSM in 2023 as a reporter, was promoted to weekend anchor in early 2024. She previously worked as an associate producer for Univision Miami.

In the Florida Atlantic University grad's place is a familiar name, Cristina Rodda, who previously worked for KTSM.

"It’s great to have yet another respected and experienced journalist decide to return to the business and join our team," KTSM 9 News Director Chris Babcock said.

Rodda just wrapped up her time as Marketing and Outreach Director for ProAction Emergency Services Institute and Immunize El Paso, where she has spent over three years leading strategic communications, digital outreach, and public engagement initiatives aimed at improving community health and safety.

Before transitioning to public health communications, the El Paso native spent over a decade as a journalist and anchor. She was a morning show anchor at News Channel 9 KTSM El Paso from 2014 to 2015 and previously held the same role at 8 News NOW - KLAS Las Vegas from 2013 to 2014. Rodda also served as an anchor and reporter for KOB 4 Albuquerque between 2009 and 2011, and for five years prior at KDBC 4 News El Paso, where she began building her on-air career.

Rodda’s communications expertise extended into state government when she was appointed Public Affairs Director for the New Mexico Corrections Department from 2011 to 2012.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Electronic Media from The University of Texas at El Paso.

Jacqueline Crea joins KHOU from KTSM El Paso

UPDATE JANUARY 31, 2017
Jacqueline Crea to exit KHOU 11

Weekend anchor Jacqueline Crea moves from KTSM El Paso to KHOU Houston as reporter

Jacqueline Crea
Jacqueline Crea
Jacqueline Crea jumps 81 markets from weekend anchor at El Paso's KTSM to Houston's KHOU 11 as a reporter (see video below).

This and other news is my Christmas present to you. Lots of readers have been asking when I'm going to post again, so I thought I would gift wrap this news for you before the blog starts back up.

There has been lots of Houston media news still going on while I've been taking a break and I'm still putting it all on Twitter and Facebook so start following me there for all the action. Now back to the post.

"I am thrilled and cannot wait to start," Crea posted on Twitter.

According to her bio, Crea was born in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of California in San Diego. Instead of getting an agent at that time, Crea actually worked for one at Creative Artists Agency (CAA). She also worked as a freelance writer at KNSD San Diego before heading to KTSM.

She credits watching local news as a child with creating her passion for journalism.

Crea left KTSM last Tuesday and starts at KHOU in mid-January.

KTSM is a special station for me because my favorite meteorologist Mark Mathis works there, KPRC 2 weekend anchor Phillip Mena came from there and former KPRC 2 morning anchor Dan O'Rourke just worked there.

Now for those who aren't following me on social media, Josh Innes has left Houston, Atom Smasher is returning to Houston and the Dallas Morning News dumped WFAA for KXAS. Time to hit me up on Twitter and Facebook to get the news as it happens! If you want to just get my blog posts, like my Facebook page.

Also another update, to the person who is asking where Fox 26 KRIV's Ford Atkinson has been, Fox Television Stations tells me he is on vacation.

Estela Casas joins KTSM 9 El Paso

Estela Casas joins KTSM 9 El Paso after leaving KVIA ABC-7 in 2020.

"I will be anchoring the 6:30 p.m. newscast Monday thru Thursday starting Thursday, April 26," Casas told the El Paso Times.  "My first day back, I'll be hosting a special edition of News Nine Now on Prop K and the upcoming election on May 6."

Called "El Paso’s longest-serving broadcast journalist" by KVIA, the former evening anchor left the station after 27 years to become the El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation's Executive Director.

Before KVIA, Casas previously worked for the following El Paso stations.

KDBC 5, 6 & 10 Anchor

KINT 6 & 10 Anchor Spanish Language Television

KTSM Part Time Reporter

Her career actually began with KTSM while attending The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

KTSM 9 El Paso anchor changes 2024

KTSM 9 News El Paso made major anchor changes at the start of 2024, affecting evening, morning and weekend newscasts.

KTSM EVENINGS

Many of those anchor charges come from the departure of married anchors Natassia Paloma and Trevor Thompson, who left the station in December 2023.

Paloma left an evening anchor seat open, so chief meteorologist Monica Cortez moves over from the weather center to the newsdesk to join Andy Morgan. Cortez has been with KTSM since 2014.

Luckily, "Studio 9" host Robert Bettes is a certified meteorologist, so he takes over for Cortez on the Chromakey wall. Bettes has already been a chief meteorologist for El Paso TV competitors KDBC CBS 4 and KVIA ABC7 plus KVEO 23 Rio Grande Valley.

MORNINGS AT KTSM

Thompson left an opening in the morning, so weekend anchor Karla Draksler moved to the weekday shift, with new hire Ian Roth joining her. Multi-media journalist Jasmine Perry has been promoted to morning traffic anchor. I have not heard of a replacement for morning weather forecaster Roxy Van Ruiten, who left last October.

WEEKENDS

That means newly hired weekend anchor Oriana Bottaro will take over for Draksler. Bottaro comes from Univision Miami, where she was an associate producer.

UPDATE

KTSM 9 News has also launched a new hour-long 4pm newscast with anchor Stephanie Shields.

Brenda Medina leaves KTSM El Paso

Brenda Medina signed off from her morning anchor role at KTSM 9 News El Paso this week.

UPDATE DECEMBER 2023
Natassia Paloma and Trevor Thompson leaving KTSM 9 News El Paso

Here is what Medina posted on social:

"Borderland! Thank you ALL so much for allowing me to keep you up to date with news impacting our community.

From west El Paso to the tip of Texas and everything else in between, I truly love and enjoy covering our border.

This season of my life has me stepping aside in my career for my family.

It’s definitely not a goodbye, but instead a see you later. Hope you continue to follow along in my journey! Un fuerte abrazo."

As I blogged in October 2022, Medina gave birth to her fourth child

"It’s a sad day here at KTSM because Brenda Medina TV is leaving us," posted co-anchor Trevor Thompson. "But she will forever be part of the KTSM family, and we’ll always remember the great things she taught us!"

Medina joined KTSM in September 2021 after working four years as the 5 and 10pm anchor for NBC 23 KVEO Rio Grande Valley.

Previous to KVEO, Medina worked in TV for KGNS 8 Laredo as a news anchor and KFOX14 News El Paso as a reporter/traffic anchor.

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) grad interned with WFLA News Channel 8 Tampa, Florida.

In between KGNs and KVEO, Medina worked as the spokesperson for the Webb County Sheriff’s Office.

Now for the item in Medina's bio that REALLY caught my attention...she cheers on both the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros!

Stephanie Shields leaves KTSM 9 El Paso

Stephanie Shields is the latest to leave KTSM 9 El Paso, where she was an anchor for "News at Noon" and a recently added hour-long 4pm newscast.

Shields is leaving the TV news biz and joining the City of El Paso with the El Paso Police Department media relations/public affairs team.

She worked for KTSM 9 for five and a half years.

Here is what Shields posted on Facebook:

"I started working at KTSM in 2018 when I returned home to El Paso from grad school at ASU. Ever since then, every day has been an adventure being able to tell the stories of my hometown and our community.

I grew up here at Channel 9. Started as a young woman, worked hard through 2 pregnancies, and became a mama all during my time here.

I learned nearly every role here from being a “one-man band” shooting, editing and reporting my own stories on the weekend, to doing some sports anchoring, and then anchoring my own shows.

I fell in love with my Borderland community every day, being able to tell your stories. Some good, some sad, and some that brought me joy and laughter.

So thank YOU, to the viewers. To those who’ve allowed me into your homes to give you the news. To those who make me so passionate about journalism and those who remind me why it’s always important to be an advocate and share the stories of our community."

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) grad and Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University master's degree earner previously worked as a sports reporter for Cronkite News.

Since you are still here, let's look at other KTSM 9 anchor changes in 2024.

I love my craft & my city and I’m so excited to continue my education, as well as do lots of traveling this next coming month! Not to get all mushyyyy but this position has really allowed me to meet the most amazing and supportive people I could ever ask for.

You all have changed my life for the better and I can’t wait to share with y’all what I have planned next. It was an honor to serve you El Paso, thank you for the amazing memories."
