Lisa Hernandez has her baby!

KHOU 11 anchor Lisa Hernandez delivers her second daughter

KHOU 11 anchor Lisa Hernandez and ESPN 97.5FM host Joel Blank got a terrific treat the day before Halloween with the birth of their second daughter!

"She’s here! Baby Madison made her debut this morning, Oct 30th, at 7lb 9oz & we are over the moon," Hernandez posted on Facebook.

Would have been even cooler if she were born the day when the Astros won their second World Series, but hey, it was a great run.

Big sister Taylor was born in 2015.

Congrats!

KTRK abc13 weekend anchor Tom Abrahams is celebrating 20 years with the Houston Walt Disney Television station:

Twenty years ago today I joined @abc13houston My wife and I moved to Houston thinking we’d be here for a few years and move on to bigger and better things. But we found there is nothing better or bigger than Houston and KTRK. This became a true home where our lives have flourished professionally and personally. We’ve raised our children here. And we are both so grateful to begin another decade of being a small part of a fantastic television station and world class community. Thank you everyone.

Lindsey Henry leaves FOX 26

UPDATE January 08, 2021

After almost three years, FOX 26 KRIV reporter Lindsey Henry announces her departure

Some of my readers have noticed that FOX 26 reporter Lindsey Henry has not been on air lately. Well, now Henry is giving mikemcguff.com readers the exclusive scoop about what's next for her after channel 26.

Last April, Henry got engaged to her boyfriend Curt Freeman while the two were exploring the ruins of Machu Picchu.

Henry wrote this update for my blog on what's happening in couple's world now:

The last two months I’ve received lots of messages asking where I’m at or what I’m doing and at first I wasn’t quite ready to make the announcement, but now I am.

We’ve had a very fun, but also very difficult year as several of those closest to us were diagnosed with cancer. Two of our loved ones passed away, one of which we were taking care of. We miss them both tremendously and are praying we see them again one day.

We’ve dealt with some of our own health challenges as well. Fortunately for now, we are are moving forward, supporting and loving our family, while taking time for ourselves.

Curt and I have thought very long and hard on this and we’re excited to announce we are both taking sabbaticals from our careers. Our travel adventures will begin, hopefully, right after the Astros win the World Series this year!

I’ve worked as a TV news reporter for the last 8.5 years and in the news industry since I was 18. My time started at KIII in Corpus Christi as a production assistant and took me to Joplin, Missouri, my mother’s hometown, Springfield and Jefferson City (KOAM and FOX 14), as well as Fresno, California (KSEE 24 & CBS 47).

I’ve absolutely loved it.

Working in my hometown of Houston, I was blessed with the opportunity to cover major things over the last few years. I’ll never forget when “#EdThePhotog” and I were inside Minute Maid for the watch party when the Astros won the World Series back in 2017. Streamers falling, fans screaming as we shot video from the other side of the dugout.

It was a moment of pure joy and happiness and that’s how I feel about this decision. Ready to take on our adventure, together.

Does this mean I’m out of the industry for good?

No, it doesn’t!

For now, I can promise you I have lots of things I plan on writing about and have a goal of publishing my first book in the next year.

We also have several other goals of stepping foot on every continent and seeing all the great wonders of the world.

In closing, I just want to say thank you.

Thanks to everyone who has reached out to us this year and get ready because we will be posting much of our journey on social media, with friends and family.

Best,
Lindsey Henry

Why is "Adios, Mofo" famous in Texas?

The answer is abc13 KTRK's Ted Oberg

With former Governor of Texas Rick Perry resigning from his cabinet position in the Department of Energy, one thing comes to mind.

"Adios, Mofo."

That was then Governor Perry's famous line from 2005.

Last night, I played the clip of Perry's famous line for my wife and then texted to my politically astute friend in Big D.

Then today, I was listening to the Houston Chronicle's excellent podcast the Texas Take where host Scott Braddock of The Quorum Report even uttered the phrase!

That was a sign I needed to write a post about this.

Besides, many Houston TV journalists were in high school or college when this happened last decade. It will be a good history lesson.

So just why did Perry say this?

Now is the point where I attempt to copy TENGA's Verify series to get to the bottom of it.

The answer is abc13 KTRK reporter Ted Oberg.

In the above video, you can watch how Oberg was interviewing Perry about his new education plan and trying to get the scoop ahead of time on the details.

Perry wouldn't budge.

The interview ends, but channel 13 is still taping (yes, Beta SP tape back then) the satellite feed where Perry thinks he's off mic and says the line to someone off camera.

It appears Perry was mocking Oberg's attempts at getting him to spill the beans on the plan before the official announcement.

History was made.

According to my own blog post from 2006, Texas Monthly even put the quote on its cover later on.

WFAA morning anchors better know how to dance

When the Daybreak: I'm Makin' a Move (Music Video) hit the WFAA 8 Dallas YouTube channel, I realized one thing, if you want to apply at the DFW TEGNA station, you better know how to dance!

In fact I wondered if the anchors went through dance training to prepare?

"No, but I wish we had," WFAA morning anchor Kara Sewell told mikemcguff.com via Twitter.

When watching the video, be on the lookout from an appearance by former abc13 KTRK reporter Sonia Azad!

And this gets me wondering, are we seeing a blueprint for KHOU 11's H-Town Rush future promotional campaign? Both WFAA and KHOU are owned by TEGNA...at least for now.

AutomotiveMap launched by Gow Media

New Digital Media Outlet to Become a Leading Source for Automotive Content

(Houston, TX) — Gow Media, a large multi-platform media company with sports radio properties ESPN 97.5 FM and SB Nation Radio and leading online destinations CultureMap, SportsMap, and InnovationMap, announced today the launch of its newest outlet, AutomotiveMap (www.automotivemap.com).

The new site will cover industry news, provide auto reviews, feature the Houston auto scene, showcase innovation, and serve as a thoughtful guide to consumers.

“We are excited to add AutomotiveMap to our portfolio of media platforms,” said David Gow, CEO of Gow Media. “We now have four content categories — culture, sports, innovation and automotive — all under the ‘map’ brand identity. And we love that each of these categories taps into the passions of our audiences.”

Gow Media has tapped Eileen Falkenberg-Hull to become editor of AutomotiveMap.

Falkenberg-Hull brings 10 years of digital publishing experience to her new position. She has covered the automotive segment exclusively for five years, with regular bylines in Trucks.com, U.S. News & World Report, and American City Business Journals. She
is a co-host of Let’s Talk Wheels on SB Nation Radio.

In her new role, Falkenberg-Hull will report to Arden Ward, vice president of editorial for Gow Media statewide.

“Eileen is an outstanding addition to our team,” said Ward. “Her enthusiasm for the auto industry is unmatched, and, as editor, she blends her extensive knowledge with an approachable voice that connects to our readers.”

“I am thrilled to become part of Gow Media,” said Falkenberg-Hull. “I have been impressed with the creative energy, professionalism, and commitment to storytelling that the team has. AutomotiveMap will be both informative and highly engaging; it will educate consumers and delight enthusiasts.”

AutomotiveMap is the latest addition to Gow Media’s ever-growing portfolio. Since acquiring CultureMap, Texas’ leading online destination for lifestyle content, in February of 2017, Gow has launched SportsMap; InnovationMap; and GiftingMap, an ecommerce
site.

“Our other site launches are going very well — we are experiencing tremendous audience and revenue growth — enabling us to step out again with AutomotiveMap,” said David Gow.

abc13 KTRK afternoon traffic anchor Brhe Berry is expecting

Brhe Berry, abc13 KTRK afternoon traffic anchor/fill-in anchor/reporter/jack of all trades, announced she is pregnant.

UPDATE JANUARY 2023

"10 week update, working on growing a @saints fan 🖤💛 thanks to my momma and dad for making the perfect chalkboard frame and to Hunter for decorating it... I just contributed the bump," Berry posted on Instagram (UPDATE: The post has been removed).

Late last week, abc13 KTRK meteorologist Rachel Briers announced she was expecting too.

Does this mean the baby wave is moving over to channel 13 from KPRC?

Berry joined KTRK in early 2019 from WTKR News 3 Norfolk, VA where she worked as an anchor/reporter/social media director. She did a lot of different jobs there too starting in 2017.

Before Virginia, Berry worked at KELO Sioux Falls, SD as the morning anchor/reporter.

Her television news career began at KLFY News 10 Lafayette, LA as a weekend Anchor/Reporter/Multi-Media Journalist.

She is a graduate of James Madison University.

Rachel Briers is expecting

abc13 KTRK meteorologist Rachel Briers is pregnant

I am kinda worn out after the Jennifer Reyna leaving channel 2 news, but I wouldn't be a good media blogger if I didn't let you know the big news for abc13 KTRK meteorologist Rachel Briers.

"My husband and I are so excited to announce that we are expecting our first child in April," posted Briers on Facebook. "We are thrilled to share this news with you all, and are excited that we get to raise our child here!"

The baby is due April 2020.

It was announced that Briers was joining channel 13 at the very end of 2018. She came to Houston after working for Midland-Odessa's NewsWest 9 KWES.

The Plano native also worked for KLBK Lubbock. She interned at WFAA 8 Dallas and KBTX 3 Bryan-College Station.

She is a graduate of Texas A&M with a degree in Atmospheric Sciences.

Jennifer Reyna is leaving KPRC 2 after more than 13 years the station reported:

KPRC legendary anchor Bill Balleza to retire

UPDATE

I did not tune in Friday morning, but my readers are telling me that Reyna was not on the air for her reported last day.

-------

Channel 2 Traffic/anchor Jennifer Reyna is hands down one of the most popular on air talents in Houston TV.

I think I have the timeline correct on this...Reyna got her intro to broadcasting by winning the Miss Rockwear 2003 title at Rock 101 KLOL which eventually led to her landing an on air gig with Outlaw Dave from 2004 to 2005.

Her first TV news job was with KABC Los Angeles where she worked behind the scenes for Eye on LA and Vista LA from 2005 to 2006.

She came back home to her hometown and joined KPRC in 2006 in the morning traffic role. In 2007, in addition to traffic duties on channel 2, she also performed the same role for 89.3 KSBJ from 2007 to 2013.

Reyna added anchor duties to her KPRC job in 2011.

Now, remember when I said she was popular? Well, I have chronicled a few instances of her fame over the years, including the Rate Reyna Twitter account where KPRC morning newscast fans featured her daily photo of her outfits.

Back in 2018, during a rare Houston winter storm, Reyna wore the same dress as KHOU 11's Chita Johnson and people seemed to get more excited about that than the cold weather that day.

Later that summer, the Houston Internet nearly melted down because Reyna changed the name of her Facebook page.

Now, fame can also have its dark side.

Back in 2013, The Houston Chronicle reported that a man was arrested for stalking Reyna. In addition to stalking her, Houston police said he drove his vehicle through the front of the old KPRC studios twice.

The bad times aside, Reyna used her popularity to support Crime Stoppers of Houston.

KPRC legendary anchor Bill Balleza to retire

RELATED
Jennifer Reyna is leaving KPRC 2

October 16, 2019 – Houston, TX – Following an esteemed 49-year career, KPRC Channel 2 anchor Bill Balleza has announced that he will retire from the station in January 2020. The announcement was made to the KPRC 2 news team during a meeting today.

“It’s never easy saying goodbye to a family member, and even more difficult losing an icon,” said KPRC 2 Vice President/General Manager Jerry Martin. “For over 35 years on the anchor desk Bill capitalized the “J” in journalism for our newsroom. It is only fitting that he is retiring at the top of his game with both our 6pm and 10 pm newscasts leading the market since 2017.”

A native of San Antonio, Bill joined KPRC 2 News in August of 1980 as a reporter and anchor, and became main anchor in 1990, following Ron Stone. During his tenure at KPRC 2 Bill has shared the anchor desk with respected newscasters Paula Zahn, Jan Carson, Linda Lorelle and his current co-anchor Dominique Sachse since 2001.

Bill thrived on covering breaking news and has frequently been called upon to lead KPRC 2’s news coverage as field anchor on the scene. Throughout his distinguished career that has spanned more than 45 years Bill has covered thousands of stories including Operation Iraqi Freedom aboard the aircraft carrier USS Truman, the death of Pope John Paul II from the Vatican in 2005 and the Conclave to elect Pope Francis in 2013. He also covered the shooting of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, the Murrah Federal Building explosion in Oklahoma City, and the crash of American Flight 587 in New York, one month after the 9-11 attacks and earned the prestigious Emmy Award for his reporting on the deadly fertilizer company explosion in West, Texas.

“Bill is an incredible journalist and anchor,” said KPRC 2 News Director David Strickland. “His ability to communicate with the viewer and earn their trust is what makes him unique and special. He is also a wonderful co-worker, whose leadership inside this newsroom will be greatly missed.”

He began his career as a television reporter at KRON-TV in San Francisco in July 1971, before joining KHOU-TV in 1973. A graduate of San Antonio College, Bill is a Vietnam veteran who served as a Marine Scout Sniper during the Tet Offensive of 1968.

Bill has maintained both his illustrious career and devotion to family equally. He is married to the former Melissa Loh of Houston. He has three children, and two grandchildren. An avid woodworker, Bill has designed and built rooms full of furniture, including for families that he and his KPRC 2 colleagues sponsored for their Houston Habitat for Humanity builds.

NBC 5 KXAS anchor Kris Gutierrez appears on "The Kelly Clarkson Show"

UPDATE
Former KPRC 2 reporter/fill-in anchor Kris Gutierrez rejoins channel 2 Houston as evening news anchor from NBC 5 KXAS DFW

I forgot singer Kelly Clarkson had a talk show (Who's High Pitch?), but had to share with you that current NBC 5 KXAS anchor and former KPRC 2 reporter Kris Gutierrez made an appearance on the first American Idol winner's show from the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

Last year, we went to the Fair and had a great time. If you want to know what it is like, just go to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Pretty similar.

One thing I like about the HLSR more is they use a card system for tickets, not actual paper tickets for rides.

I am such a diva.

In Houston, "The Kelly Clarkson Show" airs at 3pm on FOX 26 KRIV.

Chelsey Hernandez is engaged

KTRK abc13 morning consumer reporter Chelsey Hernandez let us know Saturday was the most beautiful day of her life as her mystery man boyfriend of three years asked her to marry him.

"I’ve been waiting for this moment to come and now that it’s here I’m completely speechless," Hernandez posted on Facebook. "This man went above and beyond to make his proposal so very special."

Apparently Hernandez's news colleagues helped out on this one too...she just didn't know it at the time.

Anchors Tom Koch suggested the photographer and Samica Knight threw Hernandez off her boyfriend's proposal trail.

Meanwhile, reporters Charly Edsitty, Brhe Berry and producer Krista Garvin kept the whole thing secret while planning a surprise party.

And photographer Jesus Amaya listened to Hernandez try to figure out the whole plan over the last months.

KWTX Waco reporter/multi-media journalist Chelsea Edwards joins FOX 26 KRIV

In what was thought to be a baby gender reveal, KWTX Waco-Temple-Killeen reporter Chelsea Edwards, popped balloons to display blue and pink confetti in a recent Facebook video.

That was a trick though. The real reveal was that Edwards is back in her hometown to work at FOX 26 KRIV.

"Get ready to have some fun with me in the mornings," Edwards said in the video.

She has been with KWTX since 2017.

HOUSTON (October 9, 2019) – One of Houston’s premier fall charity events, the Crime Stoppers of Houston ‘Leading the Way to a Safer Houston’ Gala took place on October 2, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Downtown. The event brought together more than 370 generous supporters, courageous victims of crime, devoted community advocates, elected officials and law enforcement from across the Greater Houston Area for an incredible evening that raised more than $433,000 to fund critical crime solving and prevention programs.

This year’s Gala was chaired by ‘Leading Women for Public Safety’ Donae Chramosta, Maha Khan and Jerri Duddlesten Moore who have a longstanding commitment to the mission of Crime Stoppers and deeply care about the safety of all who call Houston home. The event was also supported by honorary chairs Brigitte Kalai and Sippi Khurana. As Houston’s only non-profit solely dedicated to public safety, Crime Stoppers relies on community support to provide innovative programs that proactively address serious felony crime, combat human trafficking, address dangers and threats affecting schools, tackle animal cruelty and terrorism, provide services to victims of crime and their families, and so much more.

The Wednesday affair began with a lively cocktail reception full of exciting silent auction bidding, live music by Houstonian Big Band, and a preview of the Gala raffle items. For only $100 per ticket, guests could enter to win either a brand new 2019 Jeep Renegade donated by Alan Helfman, President of River Oaks Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, or an authentic 35 cm Hermes Birkin bag donated by Donae Chramosta of The Vintage Contessa and Times Past.

Once in the Imperial Ballroom, Houston Media Icon Dave Ward led the room with opening remarks that included a moment of silence in memory of fallen Harris County Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal and reflections for a safer community. Dave then turned it over to the night’s mistress of ceremonies KPRC 2 News Anchor Dominique Sachse who eloquently encouraged guests to continue to give throughout the night to support the important mission of Crime Stoppers.

During a time when she would normally talk about crime ‘statistics’, Crime Stoppers CEO Rania Mankarious took the stage to very specifically talk about the state of criminal behavior in Harris County, its escalation and the alarming rate in which violent felony offenders are being released back into our communities without serving proper time. Leaders from the city, county and state were all involved in the nonpartisan event which included a message from Ivanka Trump in support of Crime Stoppers of Houston’s unique approach in combating human trafficking, arresting traffickers and educating the community, especially teens and young adults.

“Crime Stoppers of Houston has been at the forefront of keeping communities safe. It’s an issue that affects the quality of life of everyone equally and one that we must come together to address in a nonpartisan, non-politician way. We are thankful for our relationships that run deep in the city, county and state and the model we are becoming for the nation when it comes to community driven public safety.” said Crime Stoppers CEO Rania Mankarious

As the night continued, Gala chairs Donae, Maha and Jerri delivered inspiring remarks and were joined by Crime Stoppers’ newest Youth Ambassador, Bella Chramosta, who courageously spoke of how crime and school threats have affected her life. The four of them then spearheaded the “paddles up” portion of the night that saw generous gifts from many in the room.

The evening closed with a highly anticipated keynote address from FBI Profiler John Douglas, also known as the real “Mindhunter,” who discussed his incredible work studying and corresponding with the nation’s most gruesome murders and crime cases. From life inside the prison, to the psychology of the correspondence, to the needs of the victims, he covered it all.

Wednesday’s celebration was supported by many individuals, community partners and generous underwriters, including Dave Ward, Alan Helfman, President of River Oaks Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, Brigitte and Bashar Kalai, Sippi and Ajay Khurana, Donae and Rob Chramosta of The Vintage Contessa & Times Past, Hallie Vanderhider, Michelle and Mike Heinz, Ben and Margaret Morris, PBK, Susan and Dan Boggio, Petersen Family Foundation, Seffs/Marshalls/Savarese Fight Fit, Allegiance Bank, Amber and Cary Gray, Amy and Rob Pierce, Bryan Beene, Compass Real Estate, Buffalo Bayou Resources, Inc., CenterPoint Energy, Elva and Truett Akin, Scott & Lindsay Aronstein/Connectivity Source, Frost Bank, Harris County District Attorney's Office, H-E-B, Esmat and Hazem Ahmed / Independent Bank, Jerri and Jim Moore, John Crapitto / Melissa Davis, Kip and Jennifer Hohman, Maha and Omar Khan / Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company, Mission Constructors, Inc., Perkins Family, PPI Security, Texas Inter-Faith Housing/Portfolio Resident Services, and Urban Air Adventure Parks (Sugar Land, Pearland, The Woodlands, Katy).

Among guests were Bill Baldwin, Constance White ,Darcel and Fenner Weller, Duyen Huynh, Honelie Harper, Iaif and Merrie Afseth, Javaid Anwar, Jennifer Reyna, Jill Talisman, Kim Bonnen, Laura Davenport, Leisa Holland-Nelson, Logan Leal, Mauri Oliver, Mona and Wasay Khan, Natalie Ariz, Nina Magnon, Rachelle Rowe, Sofia Adrogué, Sonya and Jeff Vaden, Tama Lundquist, Tena Faust, Tracy Faulkner, Vikki Rizzo, and Whitney and Marc Lawson.

KPRC 2 anchor Christine Noël announced on Facebook that she is engaged:

Congrats!

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2021
Christine Noël is married

UPDATE APRIL 2021

The wedding was supposed to be March 6, 2021, but has been postponed, due to the pandemic, to September 18, 2021 in Telluride, Colorado.

"Jesse and I are having a small wedding...less than 50 people," Noël posted to Instagram stories in April.  "And it's going to be outdoors. I'm hoping by the fall, there are no issues.  But like everything during his pandemic, we will continue to pivot as need be.  At this point....we are just so ready to be married."

The engaged couple has already battled COVID-19 Noël revealed in January.  Both Christine and her fiancé, Jesse, started experiencing symptoms on Christmas morning 2020.

And speaking of Colorado, you might remember that Noël came to channel 2 and Houston from 9NEWS KUSA Denver.

KHOU 11 and Houston Public Media Announce Mayoral Debate

KHOU 11 and Houston Public Media are teaming up to host a live broadcast of a mayoral debate on Monday, October 21 at 7 pm.

The debate will be broadcast live from KHOU 11’s studios in the Galleria area and will be simulcast on Houston Public Media’s News 88.7, as well as streaming platforms.

The joint effort will reach a large Houston audience on the first day of early voting. During the hour, candidates will have equal time to introduce themselves, and then a panel of journalists will pose questions to the candidates about their backgrounds and their plans to serve the city.

“Houston is shaping up to be the country’s third-largest city and is already recognized as one of the most vibrant, diverse metropolitan areas in the nation,” said Lisa Trapani Shumate, general manager of Houston Public Media. “It’s critical that voters planning to head to the polls during early voting tune in to hear from candidates vying to be the city’s chief executive.”

KHOU 11’s president and general manager agrees. “As broadcasters, this is one of the most important functions we serve,” said Robert Springer. “We look forward to providing the people of Houston the opportunity to hear directly from the top mayoral candidates.”

Candidates who have been invited to participate in the debate include:

Kendall Baker
Dwight Boykins
Tony Buzbee
Bill King
Mayor Sylvester Turner

The mayoral election will be held on November 5, 2019.

Cynthia Cisneros announces retirement from abc13 KTRK

Cynthia Cisneros has been with abc13 KTRK since 1989 and is announcing her retirement on Facebook.

I am announcing my retirement from ABC13. Yes, it’s true! After 30 years, I am retiring! It’s been a thrill of a lifetime to travel to all corners of our city and beyond, to meet extraordinary people and to be trusted to tell their unique stories.

I’ve been inspired, joyful, fearful and even horrified yet always aware that I was part of a team doing our very best to inform. Meeting new people every day and creating lasting relationships led me to become Vice President of Community Engagement. On behalf of ABC13, we offered a home to our diverse communities, giving voice to their culture.

“For 30 years, Cynthia has served ABC13 and the Houston community. She has touched projects big and small, worked with non-profits and community outreach organizations, forged friendships and life-long connections both inside and outside of ABC13 and the Walt Disney Company. We wish her the best and are certain her love and passion for service will continue for years to come.” said KTRK President and GM Wendy Granato.

While I am grateful for being recognized as an award winning journalist, I’m most grateful and humbled by the community accolades. Here are a few: honored by the Mexican American Bar Association as a Media Pioneer, LULAC 402 Woman of the Year, Texas LULAC Woman of Distinction, Fiestas Patrias Distinguished Hispanic, Solo Mujeres Journalist of the Year, Mujer Legendaria by Empresarios Latinos, Outstanding Community Leader by the Sharpstown Rotary Club, also a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow, recognized as a Hero of Houston by Shell Oil for community work in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, APAHA Outstanding Community Partner, twice awarded the Star Award for Community Affairs Director by the Media Alliance of Houston, member of the Harris County Elections Hispanic Advisory Committee, APAHA Advisory Board, COH Citizenship Month Executive Committee, Aga Khan Southwest Advisory panel, Catholic Charities Advisory board, Houston Galveston Institute Counseling board, COH Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Board, and AAMA school board.

My last day is Friday, October 4th. I look forward to the next chapter of my journey and wish everyone at ABC13 the best!

Cisneros started with channel 13 as a reporter. She started her career at radio station in Jacksonville, TX. She then worked as a reporter at KLMG Longview and KBAK Bakersfield, California.

In 2012, she was promoted to Vice President of Community Affairs.

(Thanks Susan Farb Morris!)
