The media's report card on big stories

From Houston to the national folks, how is the media doing covering the BIG stories?

Yesterday I was on Houston Public Media's (KUHF 88.7) Houston Matters talking media coverage of big stories with Houston Chronicle assistant city editor Mike Snyder and The Houston Sun publisher Doris Ellis.

You can listen to our interview with host Craig Cohen below.

I had a great time and we got a lot of great feedback on the segment.

Current KPRC 2 reporter Syan Rhodes has been promoted to weekend anchor the NBC affiliate's senior executive producer Rick McFarland tells mikemcguff.com.

Syan Rhodes to leave KPRC 2

"I'm excited and very thankful for the opportunity," Rhodes told mikemcguff.com.

That seat next to Phillip Mena has been vacant since Irika Sargent moved on to the main anchor gig at sunny WFOR Miami (and a recent guest hosting spot on CBS' The Talk).

Rhodes left her anchor gig at WESH 2 News on CW18 in Orlando for Houston's channel 2 last summer.

Before Orlando, Rhodes spent two years as weekend anchor at WMC Memphis, Tenn., and three years as a reporter and weekend morning anchor at WBIR Knoxville, Tenn. The Emmy award winning journalist also worked as an investigative reporter and weekend anchor at KETK Tyler.

Rhodes is a native Houstonian who told me in May how glad she is to be back home.

KPRC 2's Ruben Galvan's slimy live shot

All together gang: "Slime on Ruben Galvan"

 photo rubenslimed2014_zps7a8e0853.jpg

KPRC 2 morning feature reporter Ruben Galvan found his way under a slime bucket for the second year in a row at the Children’s Museum of Houston.  Well, around Halloween, it should probably be called the Monsters' Museum of Houston.

This year, Ruben rounded up some fellow victims to get the green stuff.

Touching moments to end of CSN Houston - VIDEO

After two years, Comcast SportsNet Houston signs off

Bill Doleman and Calvin Murphy bid a teary farewell

Just to show you how unfair the television business is, Comcast SportsNet Houston just produced its final hours of local programming last night and the network is effectively dead. As the future of the new Root Sports Houston is worked out, the plan is for 96 of 141 employees to be laid off.

This is certainly not the fault of the talented group of people who worked at CSN Houston. It was a top notch production all the way.

"The experience at CSN Houston was great because of the people there," wrote CSN Houston reporter Adam Wexler on his blog. "All the people there were excited to be delivering our product to the Houston fans, yes, whichever fans were lucky enough to have the network."

When the network debuted to the only 40% or so of Houston viewers with Comcast, I figured it would all be worked out in time. It was nice to once again have a Houston-only sports network - especially of this superior quality.

But no matter the great job CSN Houston did on the air, politics and business brought the whole thing down.

Below is video of the last credits and a tribute to the CSN Houston employees.

Things are heating up in the Brazos Valley. Last December, we learned that chief meteorologist Bob French filed a complaint about his former employer, KBTX Bryan/College Station, claiming discrimination and retaliation.

Then last summer French filed a federal lawsuit against KBTX claiming breach of contract, age and disability discrimination, harassment and retaliation as well as violations against the Federal Medical Leave Act.

Today we learn that the longtime Aggieland met is leaving for the competition. Here is more from the KAGS press release:

KAGS-HD News, the NBC affiliate in the Brazos Valley, is proud to announce that Bob French is joining its team as Chief Meteorologist.

Bob brings more than 30 years of experience forecasting the weather for the Brazos Valley and Southeast Texas combined. He has spent more than 20 years covering the Brazos Valley.

You can watch Bob weeknights at 6 and 10 p.m. beginning Monday, October 20th. You can also check his daily updates on www.kagstv.com, facebook and twitter.

"The Brazos Valley has been my home since 1990,” Bob French said. “I am so blessed that I can serve the residents here with my passion for weather and experience in forecasting."

“We are excited to have Bob on our team,” KAGS-HD news director Luke Simons said. “Bob is not only a great meteorologist, but a great person that truly loves this area.”

“We’re excited to have a meteorologist with a vast amount of experience forecasting the local weather,” KAGS-HD station manager Roby Somerford said.

KAGS-HD news can be seen Monday-Friday on Suddenlink (ch. 6 and 730 HD), over-the-air (channel 23.1), and on DIRECTV (channel 23.1) in the Brazos Valley.

KPRC Anthony Yanez & Daniella Guzman KNBC
A KPRC reunion:  Anthony Yanez & Daniella Guzman on the KNBC Los Angeles set.

KPRC 2's Anthony Yanez is starting a new chapter in his life. The longtime Houston morning meteorologist is becoming the noon and 5pm meteorologist at KNBC LA.

"It's bitter sweet, all my kids were born here in Houston," Yanez told mikemcguff.com. "But you get this opportunity and grab it."

Anthony Yanez
Anthony Yanez
Longtime Houston TV watchers will remember that former KPRC 2 weekend anchor Daniella Guzman is the morning anchor at KNBC. In fact, Yanez tells me Guzman was the anchor he auditioned with for the NBC owned and operated station (see photo above).

-------------
PHOTOS: See pictures from Yanez's KPRC goodbye party!
-------------

Yanez is a member of the KPRC morning crew that earned the NBC affiliate its first morning ratings win. I've always thought he and morning anchor Owen Conflenti have a good chemistry on the news - much in the way Tom Koch and Don Nelson have it on KTRK abc13. Yanez tells me that's because he and Conflenti are good friends off the air too.

Before Houston, Yanez worked for KRQE 13/KASA FOX 2 Albuquerque, NM where he is originally from. He is a graduate of University of New Mexico.

Houstonians will still get to enjoy Yanez's forecasts for a few more months. He tells me his last day at KPRC will be January 15 and his first at KNBC is January 21st.

And speaking of new chapters, Yanez is launching a writing career too. He's about to release A Wild Ride on the Water Cycle - a children's book that teaches weather science to younger readers.

The soon to be Los Angeles resident already has another book in the works too!

KHOU 11 debuts new Gannett ticker

KHOU 11 last of old Texas Belo stations to get new graphical ticker

KHOU graphic ticker Lisa Hernandez
KHOU anchor Lisa Hernandez breaks down new USA Today inspired ticker.

KHOU 11 is debuting its new Gannett-USA Today inspired colorized ticker at the bottom of the screen and boy is the station excited about it! I've received reports from viewers the station is even promoting the change.

Usually stations just turn on a new ticker and its business as usual, but KHOU even put out an informative video with anchor Lisa Hernandez to explain all elements of the change (watch below).

I think it's the equivalent of Gannett tagging a wall to mark its territory, but instead of gang symbols you might see in parts of Houston, it's a green money and orange tech section.  If KPRC or KTRK abc13 staffers dare to wander over to Allen Parkway, where KHOU's studios are located, they will see the yellow weather tab and know to get out of Gannett territory or else!

Although KHOU is celebrating the new ticker, it's actually the last old Belo station in Texas to adopt the new look. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure sister stations KENS San Antonio, KVUE Austin and Dallas WFAA already have it.

KPRC' s Dominique Sachse, Bill Balleza & Frank Billingsley on 'The Tonight Show' - VIDEO

KPRC 2's Dominique Sachse, Bill Balleza & Frank Billingsley make an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

 photo frankb_tonightshow_zpsba2cbb12.jpg

KPRC 2 anchors Dominique Sachse, Bill Balleza & chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley went national last night as they all made separate appearances on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

In a segment called, I've Got Good News and Good News, host Jimmy Fallons gives anchors at NBC affiliates across the country stories he and his staff wish could actually be on TV. His reasoning is there is too much bad stuff in the news these days.

Besides, Frank's forecast of 100% puppy hugs is a great way to end hurricane season.

Boom 92.1 FM Classic Hip Hop Houston radio

Last Wednesday Radio One killed News 92 KROI and put on B92 all Beyonce radio. We kinda figured that one would not be a permanent format.

Radio One Houston blows up Boom 92.1 KROI for The New 92.1 Radio Now Houston's LIT Music Station

Today at 5pm, 92 KROI became Boom 92.1 FM, a Classic Hip Hop station. Here is the full Radio One release:

On the eve of its announcement, Radio One of Texas II, LLC generated buzz and filled the airways with advertising free, 24-7 music from Beyonce. Today, Radio One announced its new permanent format, Boom 92.1 FM, a Classic Hip Hop station. It is the first major market throwback Hip Hop station of its kind in the country. And its Houston’s own.

Currently, Radio One is home to Majic 102.1 FM and The Box 97.9 FM, an adult R&B and mainstream Hip Hop and R&B stations respectively. Now classic Hip Hop gets added to the roster of the Urban MediaSpecialists.

“We couldn’t be more excited about bringing Classic Hip Hop back to listeners who grew up on the lyrics, beats and rhythm of this genre of music,” said Terri Thomas, Operations Manager, Radio One of Texas.

Radio One research supports that Houston has an appetite for Classic Hip Hop.

“Radio One is known for firsts.” said Jay Stevens, Senior Vice President, Programming, Radio One. “This is classic – throwback Hip Hop and you can only hear it all-day, every day on the BOOM.”

Station management is looking to heavily engage its new audience with good ole’ fashion events and programming features highlighting the artists and music that ‘take you back’.

Stay tuned for features and original Hip Hop artists updates at www.boom92houston.com.

First song, Houston's own Geto Boys Mind Playing Tricks On Me. You can hear the entire Boom92.1 format flip from B92 all Beyonce radio above.

Katherine Whaley debuts on KTRK abc13

Katherine Whaley makes her KTRK abc13 debut this evening

UPDATE FEBRUARY 02, 2015
Don Nelson announces KTRK abc13 departure

Katherine Whaley
Katherine Whaley
Katherine Whaley, formerly of KHOU 11, made her debut tonight on KTRK abc13 doing what she's known for in Houston...traffic anchoring.

It seems like it's been years since KTRK abc13 had Don Nelson or anyone else doing traffic in the afternoon (outside of the anchors from the news desk). But at least for now, the Disney/ABC Television Group has Whaley back in the saddle during the PM shift.

And why not? Traffic is just as bad in the evenings as it is in the mornings in H-Town.

Another big event today, the death of News 92 KROI, hello B92 Beyonce Radio is the top story on my blog.

 Why is that news?

It knocked the 'Why is Sharron Melton a KTRK abc13 'field anchor' now?' post off the top spot where it has been since August!

The Melton story has received so many views that it's in my top 5 posts ever written range!

Mike Iscovitz
Mike Iscovitz
FOX 26 KRIV morning meteorologist Mike Iscovitz must feel good job security right now.

He hasn't been on the air in weeks and his viewers are concerned about his whereabouts.

FOX Houston viewers are hitting Iscovitz up on Facebook, Twitter and asking me in attempts to find out if he is OK.

While he didn't get back to me directly, he did answer a viewer on Twitter concerning his MIA status saying, "Thanks. I'm having serious low back issues and a couple of other things too. I'll be back soon."

Just so you know, Iscovitz is my father-in-law's favorite meteorologist. Hopefully this makes him feel better too.

Earlier this year, FOX 26 KRIV anchor Jose Grinan was also off the air after neck vertebra surgery.

Here's to good health for the FOX Houston news team!

News 92 KROI is dead

Houston's FM news station News92 KROI signs off; becomes all Beyonce Channel B92

A longtime radio broadcaster once told me that 24 hour news would never work in Houston. When News92 KROI debuted in 2011 I hoped this would prove him wrong.

It did not.

"The whole staff has been FIRED," anchor Lanny Griffith said on Facebook. "We thank you for your support and I will be fine. We are heart broken cause we put everything into this station but it just wasn't meant to be. Thanks to Radio One for all you did for all of us and our families."

This morning was the station's last broadcast. I hear right in the middle of a story, B92, an all Beyonce station, debuted signaling the end of News92.

"We’re proud of the work we did with News92," said Doug Abernethy, Regional Vice President of Radio One. "We hired established and trusted Houstonian journalists from the radio, print and television news industries. We also invested in community relations, infrastructure, marketing, promotions and sales. Unfortunately after three years of a valiant effort, the difficult decision had to be made."

"I'm devastated that Radio One decided to change formats," reporter Adela Uchida told mikemcguff.com. "I'm proud of the work News92FM did in the months I was there. The only way we could have covered this city with such a small staff was with the talent, experience and passion we all brought every day."

News92, which was Radio One's first news station, barely reached above a one rating in its time as a station. It didn't help that the station's signal does not apparently cover the entire market strongly.

"This difficult decision is a result of sustained poor ratings performance and significant financial losses over the past three years despite the substantial financial and human resources we invested," a statement on News92's website read. "Unfortunately, the market hasn’t shown a sustainable appetite for news radio, but each of you motivated us daily to produce a high-quality news program." (SCROLL TO SEE FULL MESSAGE AT BOTTOM)

Radio One hired familiar radio and TV names like former 740 KTRH morning team J.P. Pritchard and Lana Hughes, Dennis Spellman (formerly of KIAH 39), Mike Barajas (formerly of Fox 26 KRIV), Scott Braddock (formerly of 740 KTRH, 1080 KLRD), Carolyn Campbell (KHOU 11), Kevin Charles (Metro Networks,700 KSEV), Brent Clanton (formerly of 650 KIKK, 700 KSEV), Lanny Griffith (formerly of 101 KLOL, 94.5 KTBZ, Fox 26 KRIV), Laurie Kendrick (740 KTRH, 101 KLOL, 97.5 KFNC) , Martha Martinez (101 KLOL), Bonnie Petrie (740 KTRH, 1080 KRLD), Matt Sampsell Fox 26 KRIV, KIAH 39), Pattie Shieh (Fox 26 KRIV), Meteorologist Dr. Joe Sobel, Craig Roberts (KPRC 2, 101 KLOL, 55 KTBU), and Jorge Vargas (KIAH 39).

The station later spent $900,000 on an expansion project that added a brand new studio, newsroom, offices, green room and more. Five new news vehicles were also purchased.

In a cynical view, one thing that did not happen while News92 was on the air - a hurricane/tropical storm. Radio pundits will tell you that could have driven a lot of listeners to the station to hear it and hopefully stick around.

So now 47 people are out of work as a result of the station going off the air. And now, Houston has a 24 hour all Beyonce radio station called B92 in place of News92 (at least for now, this sounds like a stunt to me).

"We take the loss of employees seriously," said Chris Wegmann, President of the Radio Division. "We are working to ensure all of our impacted employees are transitioned with the dignity and respect they deserve."

As News 92 goes away, Houston still has radio news sources 88.7 KUHF and 740 KTRH.

"We always respected the work of our friends and colleagues at News 92 and truly wish them the best," KUHF news director Jack Williams told mikemcguff.com. "Houston Public Media News 88-7 believes there is still a strong desire for in-depth, multi-media journalism in Houston.”

UPDATE OCTOBER 13, 2014
Boom 92.1 FM Classic Hip Hop Houston radio

ORIGINAL POST:

Got a report this morning the News92 staff was going into a meeting. Then heard Beyonce was playing on the station 15 minutes later. The station has been rebranded B92, an all Beyonce radio station (for now at least I would imagine, sounds like a stunt).

I checked the News92 homepage and found this:

News92, Houston’s first FM all-news radio station aired its last broadcast Wednesday, October 8, 2014.
We’d like to thank the News92 staff for their outstanding service, our advertisers and each of you our listeners and web visitors for your support. This difficult decision is a result of sustained poor ratings performance and significant financial losses over the past three years despite the substantial financial and human resources we invested. Unfortunately, the market hasn’t shown a sustainable appetite for news radio, but each of you motivated us daily to produce a high-quality news program. Together, we made history.

Lanny Griffith posted on Facebook: "News92FM is GONE, off the air. The whole staff has been FIRED. We thank you for your support and I will be fine. We are heart broken cause we put everything into this station but it just wasn't meant to be. Thanks to Radio One for all you did for all of us and our families. Anyone need to hire me for some media work?"

Craig Roberts says on Facebook that 47 people are now out of work from the format change.

Stay tuned...
