Johnny Goyen returns to Houston Radio Platinum

Houston Radio Platinum is proud to announce that Texas Radio Hall of Fame member Johnny Goyen will be joining the staff.

The multi-talented Goyen has worked at many stations in the Houston area including: KYOK, KIKK, KRBE, KODA, KNUZ, KENR, KAUM, KXYZ, KILT, KPRC and KFMK, and will be HRP’s new afternoon talent from 2pm to 6pm.

Houstonradioplatinum.com CEO Joey Kovacik added "We are excited to have Johnny Goyen part of the line-up. It's a blast from the past...it's like the old KFMK here in Houston."

HRP morning man Jimbo also praised Goyen, “Johnny will be the perfect fit for Houston Radio Platinum. We are the only classic hits station available in Houston.  One of Johnny’s best stops was at KFMK playing the classics. This is too good to be true.”

And Johnny not only brings his talent, but he also brings a lot of Houston history with his afternoon show feature “Reflections of Houston.”  Goyen’s career dates back to the mid 60’s when he was just a teen. He’s met many of the stars and broke a lot of the records we call “classics” today.

In addition to Goyen joining the station, the new HRP lineup is

The Jimbo Show (5am to 10am)

Joey and Barry (10am to 2pm)

Johnny Goyen (2pm to 6pm)

Cat (6pm to 9pm)

Donna Reed with Love Songs (9pm to 2am).

Houston Radio Platinum is also bringing back the spirit of old school radio with unique specialty shows like Friday Night Power Hits with Gary Mac (9pm Fridays) and "Crispy Coated Robots Listen To," an album review show heard on Sundays at noon.

Listen online at www.houstonradioplatinum.com, or download the FREE Houston Radio Platinum app from your app store.

Join Johnny weekdays from 2pm to 6pm Monday through Friday starting July 1st.

Joe Ford of Houston radio has died

Joe Ford

Joe Ford, a 2003 inductee into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and Houston on-air/voice-over legend, has passed away, according to the hall of fame.

- Houston radio DJs of the 1960s talk about era

"Joe was an icon, a great guy and a mentor to many," Texas Radio Hall of Fame director emeritus Josh Holstead, who goes by 'Rowdy Yates' on his nationally syndicated show, told mikemcguff.com.  "As the city of Houston grew up and out, so did Joe.  From his days at KNUZ, KFMK, and KLDE.  Joe had an in-demand voice and presentation as a voice talent."

His radio journey began at 1230 KNUZ, where he spent more than 15 years as both program director and DJ.

"Joe was more than a voice, he was a smooth operator on the air if there ever was one," 101 KLOL founder Pat Fant told mikemcguff.com. "He was my program director at KNUZ 1230am in the late sixties. If not for Joe, I would have never had the opportunity to pursue the new rock and get it on the air during the summer of '69, a pivotal time for everyone. Joe is the RADIO manager responsible for giving me the on-air name Crown Prince. That's what I was called as I turned a Top 40 station into a progressive rocker every night at 10pm. From there, it turned into KLOL."

Ford later joined KILT, working alongside another Houston radio great, Bill Young, before a brief stop at top-rated country station KIKK. His career then took him to KRBE for mornings, followed by Houston’s first oldies station, KFMK, and eventually Oldies 94.5 KLDE, where he reigned as a top-rated host from 1995 to 2001.

"I worked with Joe, back in the early 90’s, when he did middays on Oldies 94.5," Chad Stevens-Roch told me. "He was one of the nicest, and smoothest guys on and off the air. He sure will be missed."

Throughout his three-decade radio career, Ford earned numerous honors — including Billboard Magazine’s recognition as one of America’s Top 5 DJs — and was twice voted Houston’s favorite air personality. His talents extended beyond radio: he hosted his own TV show on WB 39, portrayed “Granpaw Orville” on Channel 11’s Late, Late Show, and even shared the screen with Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones in the film Backroads as “Max the Trucker.”

What began as a favor to clients turned into a new venture when Ford founded Joe Ford Voiceworks in his later years.

Responding to demand for around-the-clock access, he built a state-of-the-art recording facility designed for those “need-it-yesterday” projects. His studio features premium microphones, including the EV27ND, Sennheiser 416, Shure SM7B, KSM44SL, and Neumann TLM103, supported by dual DigiDesign-equipped setups for voice recordings.

As a producer, writer, announcer, and narrator, Ford, who attended the University of Houston, specialized in fast-turnaround voice work for radio and television commercials, narrations, and movie trailers.

"Even if you never listened to his radio show, Houstonian's will remember his voice for decades on the Strickland Chevrolet commercials on radio and TV too," added Holstead.  "In all my years, I never recall anyone saying a bad thing about the guy. What I admired most was his devotion to his family. And while I know he will be missed, I take great comfort knowing that he is no longer suffering, and he is reunited with his wife."

Houston dance music broadcasts still live on weekends

Houston Radio Platinum's Gary Mac (96.1 KIOX El Campo, 99.9 KSHN Liberty, 92.5 KKHA Bay City) lets us know that Houston still has a club mix on the weekend after my recent post about 104.1 KRBE Saturday night dance mix The Beat!

Head over to houstonradioplatinum.com on Friday nights to hear Mac host the "Friday Night Powerhits," a high energy dance show show from 7pm to 9pm.

"Bringing back all the club trax that we heard back then, on KKBQ, KRBE, KNRJ and the likes from the late 1980's till early 90's,' Mac told mikemcguff.com.  "I've hosted this show since last September.  You will hear a familiar voice to some, the liners throughout the 2 hour show is that of Mark Landis (original 93Q KKBQ Top 40 format producer/imaging director)."

In writing this post, I also ran across a website devoted to the old 93Q where you can listen to Club 6400 broadcasts and other archives from the former Top 40 Houston station.

But wait...there's more from the HRP team!

On Saturday night, the "Saturday Night Block Party," hosted by the Houston Radio Platinum team, runs from 9pm to 2am.  This show features upbeat, feel good, get down dance tunes (with a disco lean) from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

The Saturday night show came from the mind of legendary Houston DJ Johnny Goyen (KFMK, KRBE, KYOK, KIKK) when he was working for the Houston streaming station.

Houston Radio Platinum launched in May 2019 featuring soft rock hits of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. In July 2020, the station switched from soft rock to the classic hits format.

Johnny Goyen’s ‘Soul of the City’ Debuts on Houston Radio Platinum

Houston Radio Platinum — the city’s online destination for classic hits from the '60s, '70s, and '80s — announced the launch of a brand-new show from veteran radio personality Johnny Goyen.

“Soul of the City with Johnny Goyen” will showcase some of the greatest soul, R&B, and Motown classics ever recorded.

A young Goyen began his radio career at the legendary KYOK Houston at just 16 years old. Over the past six decades, he’s worked at a variety of Houston stations and formats, but his passion for soul and R&B music has remained a constant.

His Houston radio résumé includes KYOK, KIKK, KRBE, KODA, KNUZ, KENR, KAUM, KXYZ, KILT, KPRC, and KFMK.

According to HoustonRadioPlatinum.com CEO Joey Kovacik, the new show will not only spotlight iconic soul tracks but also introduce fresh segments like The Legends of Soul Radio, a tribute to legendary soul DJs from Houston and around the country.

Blending music with rich storytelling, Goyen brings personal reflections from his long career, sharing memories of artists, DJs, and mentors who shaped his journey. “Soul of the City with Johnny Goyen” premieres with a special six-hour debut on Sunday, June 15 at 6 p.m., and will air Sundays from 6 p.m. to midnight exclusively on HoustonRadioPlatinum.com.

Goyen also hosts “Mornings with Johnny Goyen” weekdays from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Houston Radio Platinum.  He has been with the online station since 2019.

Houston Radio Platinum offers a FREE app available in your app store. Additionally, enable the Houston Radio Platinum skill and ask Alex to open “Houston Radio Platinum”.

Madd Hatta Show on 97.9 The Box?

UPDATE August 03, 2020
Madd Hatta to advise KTSU The Vibe

UPDATE MAY 2020
Madd Hatta interviewed on "The Jimbo Podcast"

The Madd Hatta Morning Show appears to be off the air after nearly 20 years - replaced by "Good Morning H-Town" with Jerrel ‘Hardbody Kiotti’ Brown and Keisha Nicole

I'm beginning to think 97.9 The Box KBXX is taking a play from director JJ Abrams and introducing "mystery boxes" to confuse the audience and get them excited about changes with the station's new morning show.

Last week, I blogged that longtime Madd Hatta Morning Show player Jim Beazy announced he was leaving the show. I actually saw his brother's post about it and tried calling Beazy over the weekend, but did not hear back from him.

Then there was talk across the Twitter-verse that the entire Madd Hatta Morning Show was off the air. The actual show staff was very quiet about it on social media. Many just posted inspirational messages that suggested something big had just happened and they were looking to move on.

A mutual friend reach out to Madd Hatta for me, but no information was offered. I contacted both KBXX and owner Radio One and never heard anything back.

Then I started getting emails and Facebook message asking me what was going on with the very popular morning show.

At the time of me writing this post, the Madd Hatta Morning Show is still listed on the KBXX website and on the programming schedule.

So what's going on with Madd Hatta and 97.9 The Box?

"Good Morning H-Town" with Jerrel ‘Hardbody Kiotti’ Brown and Keisha Nicole morning show on 97.9 The Box KBXX

In this case, we can get some answers from Lance Venta of the leading radio trade site Radio Insight and from tuning in January 6th.

Monday, Venta posted: "Without any promotion or internal marketing, KBXX debuted its new morning show this morning hosted by former night host Jerrel ‘Hardbody Kiotti’ Brown and midday host Keisha Nicole."

Kiotti has been hosting the “The Radio Boss Show” 7pm to 11pm weeknights and Saturday Mornings from 10am-2pm on 97.9 The Box. The Houston native was formerly signed to Asylum Records. Venta reported Kiotti also hosted nights at “Party 104.9” KPTY before he joined The Box in 2010.

"As far as the behind the scenes, I really see how much stuff that we do for the community," Kiotti told rollingout in 2019. If you grew up in Houston, 97.9 was your station. If you were able to play for the dynasty in any sport, 97.9 is the dynasty. PERIOD."

Keisha Nicole came to KBXX in 2017 from Hot 96.3 WHHH Indianapolis. She also worked for B96.5 WGZB Louisville and KDAY Los Angeles.

The only schedule change on the KBXX website is that Young Jas from the Hatta Show is now in the night slot taking over for Kiotti.

The Madd Hatta Morning Show

While the Madd Hatta Morning Show has had various lineups through the years, the most recent group was as described on the KBXX website:

The Madd Hatta (Host), J-Mac (Freestyle King), Jimbo (News, Goofy stuff), Kooper (Producer) and Young Jas (Entertainment News).

Benjamin Thompson (aka Madd Hatta, Da Madd Hatta, Mista Madd) has been with KBXX since 1995 when he worked the afternoon shift. The rapper and producer moved to the morning shift in 2001 when then KBXX program director Robert Scorpio left the "Box Morning Playas" show for Los Angeles. The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University grad is also the Assistant Program Director at Radio One sister-station Majic 102.1 KMJQ and host of "Super Throwback Party." Madd Hatta was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jim Kovacik (aka Jim Beazy) has been with the morning show longer than anyone. He even pre-dates KBXX being a station. The University of Houston grad worked for 97.9 KFMK in the research department. But in 1991, the then oldies-heavy adult contemporary format (my Mom listened to it) flipped to KBXX The Box. Beazy worked overnights and on the Box Morning Playas where he continued with Madd Hatta.

On his bio, J-Mac is listed as an entertainer, comedian, musician and award-winning radio personality. A fixture on Houston’s airwaves for nearly two decades, first at KMJQ and as a key player on the highly-rated Madd Hatta Morning Show at KBXX.

Contact me if you have more info. Stay tuned.

UPDATE
A petition at change.org was created asking for support in getting Donnie Houston added to the 97.9 The Box Morning Show:

Donnie Houston has long been a stalwart in the Houston entertainment community. Whether he’s been producing hits for your favorite rappers (Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Sauce Walka, etc), DJ’ing your favorite night spots (Faces, 5015, Alley Kat, Heinke & Pilot and Phil and Derek’s) or entertaining you with ground breaking interviews and content on his popular “The Donnie Houston” podcast and WeWork “Heart of a Hustler” series, he’s been actively keeping his ear to the streets and giving us content that is not only entertaining but informative. Which leads me to this, the 97.9 The Box morning show is going through a transition from the old to the new, yet there’s something missing. That something is Donnie Houston. The resumé speaks for itself, now it’s time for the streets to speak for Donnie so he can in turn speak for us on 97.9! Please sign this petition in support of getting Donnie Houston on the 97.9 The Box Morning Show.
