TX Radio Hall of Famer on new Houston online station

Houston Radio Platinum started in May of 2019, and features the best soft rock of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s offering listeners something different that they can’t get anywhere else.

The station launched its new morning show with Houston radio legend Johnny Goyen.

Goyen is no stranger to the Houston Radio Market spending time on KFMK, KRBE, KYOK, and KIKK in Houston.

Every Sunday Night the online station features the best songs of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s on “Solid Gold Sunday” with Andy Waldrop.

Waldrop is a familiar voice on Houston Radio having been heard on KSHN, KIKK, KSBJ, and helping you navigate the Houston freeways on traffic services throughout Houston.

Remembering 99.9 FM KSHN Liberty

I've been covering how 99.9 FM KSHN Liberty, TX was just sold to 89.3 KSBJ.

That prompted former Liberty resident Toni Huehnerfuss to reminisce on my Facebook page about her times listening to KSHN, which was a very community oriented station.

Here is Toni Huehnerfuss in her own words:

I grew up in Liberty listening to our local radio station. It started off as AM station KPXE, and later moved to FM 99.9 KSHN - “shine all nine.”

Mr. Bill Buchanan was the owner and was very involved in our city.

They could play whatever music they wanted to which was like listening to someone’s extensive eclectic record collection.

We could hear all of the local news, school activities, obituaries, road closures, water main breaks, community bulletin boards etc...

Friday night Liberty and Dayton football games were simultaneously broadcast - Liberty Panthers on your left speaker and Dayton Broncos on your right.

They would broadcast live at the Liberty Jubilee and from the Trinity Valley Fair and Rodeo. Various local church services were broadcast on Sundays and other original programs were broadcast during the week.

We could buy sell and trade on The Trading Post, hear zydeco, soul and country on The Crown Prince Show, listen to some bluegrass gospel on Roy Bennett’s Heavenly Sunlight and interact with Andy on FB during Andy Waldrop’s Solid Gold Sunday.

Each morning we could listen to the Party Line which featured local business leaders, politicians and helpful community information.

Nothing against KSBJ, but I am so very sad that my hometown station is gone. I miss it so much.

All things must pass I guess.

Longtime Houston radio listeners will no doubt remember Mr. Leonard who makes his return on Houston Radio Platinum Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.

Yes, you might remember him from the old Top 40 formatted 93Q KKBQ and the Q Morning Zoo.  Not the "new" one that has been on since the 90s.

Mr. Leonard of course was with the legendary Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee John Lander of the morning show.

The fan-favorite character of Mr. Leonard is played by John Rio.  Rio took the character to other stations like Z-100’s “Morning Zoo” New York, WBMX Boston and KPLX “The Wolf” Dallas. 

As Rio moves in, Gary Mac moves over to Sunday afternoons at 2pm with Chris Alan (101 KLOL, 93.7 The Arrow KKRW and more) continuing his Saturday afternoon shift 1pm to 7pm.

Rowdy Yates launches podcast talking to Houston radio greats

Rowdy Yates boasts a long radio career, having held on-air positions at various stations across Texas and beyond. Notably, he spent 16 years as a drive-time host at 100.3 KILT in Houston.

Now, he's using his vast industry knowledge to interview his broadcasting friends in a new podcast to hear never-before-heard tales from the radio studio.

"I think in many ways, it was the first (and in many cases) only time that a popular personality in Houston radio could really get the opportunity to express appreciation to their fans, tell their side of how things were, share a bit of the business that not many people were really aware of, and selfishly, to see my friends and get the opportunity to visit with my Houston radio heroes," Yates told mikemcguff.com.

Yates' latest episode is with Cactus Jack, formerly the afternoon DJ on 93Q KKBQ, just a few months after his near-fatal heart attack.

Other episodes include famous names like Dan Gallo, Joe Ladd, Andy Waldrop, and more.

"A few of the 'tales from the street' with veteran Houston news anchor Robert B. McEntire were quite captivating," Yates said.   "Tom Fontaine and I reminiscing (if you can call it that) over the CBS Radio coverage of Hurricane IKE was pretty entertaining.  We actually are going to do a follow-up with a number of folks that were there during that time and in the studios at 24 Greenway during the storm. I'm looking forward to that."

Yates tells me Paul Christy will be one of the next episodes.

"I think people will enjoy this because it is unscripted, unvarnished, and reveals a side of their favorite media types like they have never heard," Yates told me.   "There are no rules, no restrictions, and no frills.  It is about as raw, real and revealing as it can be."

Yates' passion for radio began at a young age.  In fact, his dad, the legendary Texas radio newsman Joe Holstead, was a respected Dallas-Fort Worth journalist for nearly 30 years at the likes of 820 WBAP and was a backup for ABC Radio's Paul Harvey. 

His start in radio at age 15 in Denton led to a career at stations such as 95.7 KIKK Houston, 98.5 KVOO Tulsa, and 101.9 The Twister KTST. 

He currently hosts "The Original Country Gold" and "The Rowdy Ride Home," nationally syndicated by SuiteRadio.

Yates is a recipient of numerous accolades, including three nominations for Disc Jockey of the Year, a 2013 Academy of Country Music Award win, and the distinction of being the youngest inductee into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.

Paul Berlin, Houston radio legend, passes away

Paul Berlin will be remembered as one of Houston's greatest broadcasters

The Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Paul Berlin will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at South Main Baptist Church, 4100 Main St., Houston, Texas 77002. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children at www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org.
It was Paul's explicit request that his Memorial Service be open to "All of Heavenly Houston." His favorite advise to his peers: "Be informative, Be entertaining...or be quiet."

Paul Berlin interviewed in Dan Lovett's Houston radio documentary

When you think of the greats in Houston radio history, one of the first names to enter your mind has to be Paul Berlin.

Unfortunately, the news has been spreading around social media that Berlin has passed away. I believe he would have been around 86.

"He was a gentleman with the sunniest personality," former 740 KTRH reporter Tracee Evans told mikemcguff.com. "I looked forward to seeing him walk in the building when I was at Clear Channel. He was a walking smile."

Brent Clanton has told me this Saturday night from 6pm-8pm on KSEV 700, the last station Berlin still played songs from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s on the weekends, broadcasting greats Scott Arthur, Walter Hammock and Ronnie Renfrow will air a special tribute to the Houston radio legend. UPDATE: The Texas Radio Hall of Fame will be streaming the KSEV broadcast tonight on its Facebook Group.

Berlin played everything from early rock n roll to big band on Houston stations such as:

- Then back to 700 KSEV

At one time Berlin was the highest-paid disc jockey in the Houston area. He was offered a job at New York station WABC at $50,000 a year, a $10,000 raise, with the chance of doing TV, but he turned it down.

"I said, 'I've got three little boys. I'm making $40,000 right now, and I'm promoting rock 'n' roll shows. But most of all, I'm happy.' What price do you put on happiness?"

Berlin and Nezzie, his wife of 52 years, had five sons in all.

He's been a nominee for radio's Marconi Award. His face and voice are seen and heard in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. He's in the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. He's proud of the accolades, sure, but adds, "I can take a kick in the butt, too, for screwing up. I've done that." READ MORE

Paul Berlin has entertained listeners for 65 years

He also promoted concerts, beginning with big bands at the Plantation Ballroom on South Main, and owned two nightclubs, the Dome Shadows near the Astrodome and a short-lived location on Richmond. His acts ranged from the Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie and Artie Shaw big bands to Nat "King" Cole, Frankie Avalon, Chubby Checker, the Dave Clark Five and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

Perhaps the biggest one, alas, got away in 1964. Berlin said he had just booked a show for Sonny and Cher when he received a call asking if he was interested in bringing the Beatles to Houston on that same date.

"I said I couldn't do it, and I asked them please not to bring the Beatles in on that date, because they would kill Sonny and Cher," Berlin said. "So they booked them in Denver."

Berlin tried to get the Beatles a year later, but KNUZ management insisted that promoters guarantee the Fab Four would show up without sending replacements. The promoter refused, and the Beatles' Aug. 14, 1965, shows at the Sam Houston Coliseum were sponsored by KILT. READ THE REST

"Sad loss. A legend indeed. Story time: when I started at Clear Channel in 2002 the KPRC studio shared a window with KBME Oldies. Paul was always doing his thing on-air while I was on the other side of the glass just learning radio. Talk about intimidating...staring at the legend whilst he stared back at me. He couldn't have been nicer. Always said "Hey, baby, what's shakin'? You're doing a great job. A superstar!" His stories were amazing. Nevah gonna be anyone like him. RIP, Pablo."
