So why is this happening?

With Urban One (owner of 97.9 'The Box' and Majic 102.1) announcing the purchase of the Cox Media Group Houston cluster in April 2023 (93Q Country KKBQ, The Eagle 106.9 and 107.5 KHPT-KGLK and Country Legends 97.1 KTHT) two stations must be sold to comply with the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) local ownership limits.

That means one more station of this newly combined group of Houston radio stations must be sold and it will apparently be Country Legends 97.1.

Madd Hatta to advise KTSU The Vibe

The Madd Hatta Departs Radio One, Assumes Duties at Texas Southern University - Hall of Fame broadcaster will serve as Content Manager at KTSU-FM while pursuing additional projects

HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 3, 2020) — Following a 20 year run as the host of the Madd Hatta Morning Show, broadcast veteran The Madd Hatta (né Benjamin Thompson) has fulfilled his contractual obligations to Radio One’s 97.9 The Box (KBXX-FM, Houston) and will now advise the programming team at Houston’s KTSU-FM on the campus of noted HBCU Texas Southern University.

While his service to the station as Content Manager will take priority professionally, the Texas Radio Hall of Famer's work on recording projects and the expansion of his branded content assets will continue.

The Madd Hatta began his broadcast career in college radio on WNAA-FM, on the campus of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, NC. “College radio gave me my start, “Hatta recalls, “and I’m looking forward to giving something back. I know this market, I know its music and I know this school. TSU is a great fit for where I am right now and where the University’s broadcast program is going.”

KTSU 90.9 FM Introduces New Station The Vibe

Texas Southern University’s Division of University Advancement is excited to announce the continued expansion of KTSU 90.9 FM with a new digital station. The Vibe will be the digital and innovative Urban Alternative station, powered by KTSU. The new format will appeal to Millennials and the Generation Z demographic, offering the latest in Hip Hop, R&B and Neo-Soul on the FM dial and through 24-hour online streaming. The Vibe is set to begin broadcasting and streaming this fall.

The non-profit Corporation for Public Broadcasting awarded KTSU the grant to start The Vibe in the Houston market after the ratings success and growth of KTSU 90.9 FM, which is one of the top 25 public radio stations in the country and #1 public radio station in the country with African American listenership audience. The Choice, known for its format of jazz, blues, oldies and gospel, has always championed other formats, which makes The Vibe a timely fit.

Doug Harris aka Jr. Mintz elected Houston Film Critics Society president

Broadcast Veteran Celebrates 35 years of Jr. Mintz Movie Reviews


HOUSTON, TEXAS (February 6, 2019) — Broadcast marketing and promotions specialist Doug Harris has been elected president of Houston Film Critics Society (HFCS) to serve a two year term extending to 2021.

The announcement coincides with the 35th anniversary of his movie review features, scripted and voiced under the alias of Jr. Mintz.

His film critic “side hustle” took off after an invitation from 101 KLOL afternoon host Harvey Kojan (aka Dr. K) to review films for the heritage AOR’s audience. KLOL’s GM, Pat Fant (now of RFC Media) is credited with creating his signature sign off, “When a movie stinks, you’ll smell it first with Jr. Mintz.”

Since those days, Jr. Mintz reviews have aired on The Buzz (KTBZ-FM), The New 93Q (KKBQ-FM) and News 92 FM.

A seven year regular on the “Dean and Rog Show” in Houston (on The Arrow then The Eagle), Mintz enjoyed eight years in syndication with the Connecticut Radio Network and was heard daily on eight New England stations.

An inductee of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Harris/Mintz now shares his opinions on NASA’s digital radio station, Third Rock Radio.

Doug Harris to serve two-year term as president, Travis Leamons and Dr Donna Copeland to serve new roles

HOUSTON, TEXAS (February 6, 2019) — At the Houston Film Critics Society’s (HFCS) first meeting of 2019, the membership approved an uncontested slate of new officers who will immediately begin serving terms that will extend to early 2021.

Doug Harris was elected as the organization’s president and Travis Leamons as vice-president. Lisa Elin was reconfirmed as the group’s secretary while Dr. Donna Copeland will assume the duties of treasurer, previously handled by Travis Leamons.

HFCS member Mark Schumann has been appointed communications director for the organization.

After three consecutive terms, outgoing HFCS President Joshua Starnes will shift his focus to overseeing the group’s ongoing recognition of independent filmmakers and the annual presentation of the Texas Independent Film Awards. In tribute to his service, the HFCS presented him with a personalized director’s chair at their January meeting.

“This is going to be an incredible year for the HFCS,” Harris predicts. “We wrapped up 2018 with a spectacular, sold out awards show at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, began work on a revitalized website, and launched two new scholarship programs to recognize and support the next generation of filmmakers and journalists. Most importantly, our members collectively viewed over 10,000 films last year.”

Doug Harris (president) has reviewed movies in Houston for over 30 years as “Jr. Mintz”. His work first appeared in 1983 on Rock 101 KLOL, and subsequently on 94.5 The Buzz, The New 93Q, and News 92 FM. A regular for seven years on the “Dean and Rog Show” (93.7 The
Arrow, then 107.5 The Eagle), Mintz also enjoyed eight years in syndication with the Connecticut Radio Network and was heard daily on eight New England stations. A member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and Broadcast Film Critics Association, as well as a founding
member of the Houston Film Critics Society, he now shares his opinions on NASA’s digital radio station, Third Rock Radio.

Travis Leamons (vice-president) is a critic, cinephile, fitness enthusiast and avid collector of physical media (with more than 4,000 titles). He has written about film for more than a decade for outlets Inside Pulse, Examiner, BackstageOL, and Birth.Movies.Death. He also hosted over 100 episodes of the Houston Film Critics Society's weekly podcast “The Critics Circle”.

Lisa Elin (secretary) holds a degree in writing and is a certified coach specializing in cinema therapy and positive psychology. She’s been a member of the reviewing press since 2009 and weaves these concepts into her work, appearing in a variety of outlets including Reel Happiness, Examiner, We Got This Covered, and the HFCS podcast “The Critics Circle”. She also designs brain games for movie lovers.

Radio One Houston has responded to Hot 95.7 KKHH flipping to 95.7 The Spot by blowing up Boom 92.1 KROI and making it The New 92.1 Radio Now Houston's LIT Music Station this evening.

One of my blog commenters claims this is Radio One's answer to Hot 95.7 going bye, bye. Now 92.1 will be the new Top 40/CHR station for Houston.

In fact, some of KROI's new IDs take swipes at Hot. They also took a swipe at 104.1 KRBE.

Radio One's first all classic hip hop station, Boom 92, debuted October 13, 2014 after replacing the stunt format all Beyonce Channel B92. Other Radio One stations across the country flipped to the format soon after. A week before that, Radio One killed its all news format News 92.

The ratings for classic hip hop jumped at first but cooled off later on.

Former 101 KLOL partners Doug Harris and Pat Fant Reconnect on Third Rock Radio

Doug Harris aka Jr. Mintz

Third Rock Radio, the digital rock station created for NASA by Houston-based RFC Media, has become the newest outlet for movie reviews by Jr. Mintz, written and voiced by broadcast industry veteran Doug Harris.

Harris, the award-winning promotions director turned marketing consultant, first used the Jr. Mintz moniker in 1983 at legendary AOR KLOL-FM at the suggestion of then GM and fellow Texas Radio Hall of Famer, Patrick Fant (now C.O.O of RFC Media.) Since that time, Jr. Mintz reviews have aired on The Buzz, The Arrow, The New 93Q, The Eagle, and News 92 FM in Houston as well as a multi-year run on the Connecticut Radio Network.

Fant, who formed RFC Media with veteran programmer Cruze in 2009, recently suggested the new collaboration, which the men launched with uncharacteristic restraint over Labor Day weekend.

"Junior’s going global," notes Fant, "and Third Rock listeners should fasten their seat-belts."

Third Rock Radio’s listening episodes surpassed 1.5 million in the month of August from music lovers and space enthusiasts across the USA and in dozens of countries worldwide.

For a 12 year period spanning the 80’s and the 90’s, Harris and Fant, in tandem with some of the industry’s biggest rock radio personalities and a string of exalted PD’s, generated headlines, ratings, and record revenues for KLOL, the family-owned FM rocker in Houston.

Harris, who has worked with Fant on a number of projects since their time at KLOL, says he’s looking forward to connecting with his creative partner again.

"We’re just a couple of unapologetic radio fans," admits Harris, "and we’re on the lookout for the next big thing. Pat’s found it. His vision to commercialize internet radio is bold, which is the only way he knows how to do things. I’m just glad to get a seat on the train. And as long as Adam Sandler insists on making films, I’ll have plenty to talk about."

Former News 92 FM KROI and NewsRadio 740 KTRH morning anchor JP Pritchard has joined The Sam Malone Show on AM 1070 The Answer KNTH as the new News Director and Public Affairs Director for Salem Radio Houston.

"I remember the first time I saw JP," Malone recalled to mikemcguff.com. "It was in the building at Clear Channel in '05. He was walking down the hallway. I thought, 'OMG...should I say something?' Not all radio legends are friendly. I decided to take a shot and said, 'Hi.' He responded with a golden-voiced, 'HELLLLLOOOO.' I remember calling my wife and telling her I just hello to JP Pritchard!!!!"

Last night, I put it out on Twitter and Facebook that a new co-host would be joining Malone. The rumor I heard said "him" so I knew it wasn't going to be everyone's automatic assumption Maria Todd. It was interesting watching social media try to figure out who it would be.

If you've been in Houston for any length of time, you know the coming together of Malone and Pritchard is quite the powerful combo!

Pritchard, like Malone, is a Houston radio institution. He started at KTRH in 1982 (Lana Hughes joined him in 1984 for those playing at home).

 After working his way up at radio stations across the midwest, Pritchard arrived in Houston at KULF which is now SportsTalk 790 KBME. Pritchard is a graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He and his wife, Esther, have three grown sons.

KENS reporter James Munoz works for city councilman
Former broadcast journalist James Doughty joins District 9 City Councilman Joe Krier and staff as Communications Manager.
"James Doughty came to us highly recommended and after several interviews we determined he was an outstanding match for our office," said Krier. "I look forward to him being a part of our team and helping us serve the needs of District 9 constituents.”
James most recently worked in television news using his mother's maiden name Munoz. Born in Midland, Texas, James graduated from Texas Tech University in 1997 with a BA in Broadcast Journalism. He has worked in TV News for more than 16 years.
James and his wife Angela are members at Churchill Baptist Church where they lead a Sunday morning Bible School Class for Pre-K and Kindergarten aged children. He has two children who study in the N.E.I.S.D.
"I turn 40 this year and more than ever it's important for me to give back to this wonderful community," Doughty said. "Councilman Krier is one of the most respected members of our community and I'll work hard to share his views and values with San Antonio."
James is a 4th generation Texan. He carries the namesake of his 3rd great-grandfather who was the first superintendent of the King Ranch and Sheriff of Refugio county. Another ancestor, John Moses, came to Texas in 1847 and wrote a series of columns for the San Antonio Express News from 1887 to 1890 under the pseudonym Sesom.
"When I look at my family history of public service I know I've made the correct move in joining Councilman Krier at City Hall," said Doughty. "I am here to chronicle what's happening and help others. I'm honored to work with Councilman Krier for all of San Antonio."
