Houston-area DJs honored in Country Radio Hall Of Fame class of 2025

The Country Radio Hall of Fame Class of 2025 was announced today during CRS Honors at CRS 2025, and we have some Houston-area inductees on the list!

Rowdy Yates (Houston), Mary McCoy (Huntsville), and Big D & Bubba are in the On-Air Personality category.

ROWDY YATES

Joshua Holstead aka Rowdy Yates

Joshua C. Holstead, known to radio listeners as Rowdy Yates, is an award-winning country radio personality who spent nearly two decades as the afternoon host on Houston’s 100.3 KILT-FM.

Holstead currently hosts "The Original Country Gold with Rowdy Yates," a syndicated show airing in over 120 U.S. markets. He also oversees the country programming for RFC Media’s Suite Radio, a 24/7 format service based in Houston, with duties including "The Rowdy Ride Home."

Throughout his career, Holstead has served as a personality, promotions director, and program director in various markets, including Dallas/Ft. Worth, Bryan/College Station, and small Texas towns like Brady and Bridgeport. His start in radio at age 15 at 1440 AM KDNT Denton led to a career at stations such as 95.7 KIKK Houston, 98.5 KVOO Tulsa, and 101.9 The Twister KTST.

His industry accolades include the Best Personality/Show award from the Country Radio Broadcasters (CRB) and Country Aircheck Readers in 2014. In 2013, he was named Personality of the Year by the Academy of Country Music.

A longtime leader in the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, Holstead was its Executive Director from 2014 onward before being named Director Emeritus in 2021. Previously, he served as Operations Manager of the Hall.

Inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2008 at age 38, he remains the youngest-ever inductee. A true “radio baby,” he is the youngest son of Joe Holstead, known as the “dean of Texas radio news.”

 MARY MCCOY

Mary McCoy has been on the air for over 73 years, many of them at K-Star Country 99.7 FM KVST Huntsville, where she co-hosts with Larry Galla from 10 a.m. to noon.

A 2010 inductee of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, McCoy was recently honored as part of the 2024 Radio Hall of Fame induction class.

In 2023, Guinness World Records recognized her for having the longest career as a female radio presenter.

McCoy began her radio journey in 1951 at KMCO-AM, later working at KIKR before joining KVST.

Beyond radio, she was also a singer and guitarist who shared the stage with legends like Elvis Presley and Jim Reeves. In 1960, she released her first record, Deep Elem Blues.

Ginny “Rogers” Brophey, Clay Hunnicutt, and Gregg Swedberg are in the Radio category.

The Country Radio Hall of Fame Induction and Dinner will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the Virgin Hotel Nashville.

KTSU 90.9FM, Texas Radio Hall of Fame salute pioneers of Texas Black radio

HOUSTON, TEXAS (February 1, 2022) — In celebration of Black History Month and in continuing tribute to KTSU’s ‘Journey to 50’ celebration, 90.9 The Choice will air a series of audio vignettes spotlighting the people who first brought music, news, and commentary to Black audiences in Texas.

These episodes, researched by and co-branded with the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, will be produced under the supervision of KTSU program director Donna Franklin.

The 60-second features will air on KTSU-FM beginning February 6, 2022 and will be voiced by The VIBE Houston content director The Madd Hatta, a 2013 Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee.

“Each year, Black History Month gives us the opportunity to remember significant contributors to the growth of our community and the strength of Black culture, “said KTSU general manager Ernest Walker. “With the advent of Black-owned and operated radio stations in the mid-20th century, the voices and music that inspired and entertained Black citizens were woven into the fabric of everyday life. That’s the role that KTSU-FM continues to play to this day.”

KTSU’s Donna Franklin shares Walker’s enthusiasm for the project and looks forward to personally overseeing the creation of this on-air salute.

“These broadcast pioneers, whose vision, resources, and talent made radio tailored to Black audiences and Black businesses a reality, are most deserving of this recognition. The people ‘behind the mic’ as well as those who ‘wrote the checks’ were both brave and resolute. These are the stories we’re going to share.”

The Texas Radio Hall of Fame celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2022 and enjoys a strategic alliance with the Texas Museum of Broadcasting and Communications in Kilgore, Texas.

In addition to The Madd Hatta, Ralph Cooper and Muriel Funches, executive director of advancement with the Jesse H. Jones School of Business at Texas Southern University, are Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductees.

Support for the initiatives of KTSU and the Texas Radio Hall of Fame is provided by Amber Mostyn, co-founder of Mostyn Law.

Voting members to select twenty from field of fifty nominees starting July 24th

(Houston, TX) July 24, 2025: The Texas Radio Hall of Fame (TRHOF) has released the names of the fifty (50) nominees for its 2025 Induction Class. The voting portal will be open and accessible to voting members via www.TRHOF.net through midnight on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

- Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2024 induction ceremony recap

As a prelude to the final balloting, the TRHOF has identified five (5) broadcast legends who will be concurrently inducted as Lonestar Legacies in a new category designed to honor the achievements of broadcasters who have passed away.

TRHOF Executive Director Doug Harris notes the importance of this recognition and the challenge of keeping the names of these remarkable broadcasters fresh in the minds of its members.

“With the passing of each year,” observes Harris, “the voting membership’s familiarity with some of the most accomplished and influential figures in Texas Radio history, fades a bit more. Our Lonestar Legacies, selected by an ad hoc committee of TRHOF board members and advisors from our 2025 submissions, have earned their rightful place on the diadem of our Hall of Fame crown.”

The 2025 Lonestar Legacy inductees are:

Alberto Alegre Calvo

Randy Lemmon

Gary Mason (Aycock)

Susan O’Donnell

Tom Perryman

Voting members will still have the opportunity to select twenty (20) additional 2025 inductees by reviewing their names, bios, and photos through the voting portal on the TRHOF website.

This year, over160 broadcast professionals with ties to Texas radio were nominated for consideration by the TRHOF’s Internal Review Committee, who independently made their recommendations on the final fifty. Voting members of the TRHOF will now determine the twenty individuals who will be honored on November 1, 2025, during the TRHOF’s Annual Induction Ceremony at the Texas Broadcast Museum in Kilgore, TX.

Houston-based RFC Media Proud of its 3 New Inductees into The Texas Radio Hall of Fame

Texas Radio Hall of Fame (TRHOF)

Longtime Houston radio hosts Pam Kelly, Laurie Kendrick and Maria Todd have been elected to the Texas Radio Hall of Fame’s class of 2022, the latest members of Houston-based RFC Media’s talent roster to be inducted.

Maria Todd has brought her larger-than-life electric personality to every studio she has entered for over three decades and now co-hosts a syndicated morning radio show for RFC Media.

Laurie Kendrick is an American humorist, writer, news director and creative force for 30 years in the funniest of radio.

Pam Kelly makes that studio on-air light glow a little brighter each time she cracks the mic, with 3 decades of cross-format expertise ranging from legendary KLOL to Alt Rock, Country and Christian.

All three remarkable talents will now be recognized by the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.

These three new inductees join a distinguished list of RFC Media’s six other notable Hall of Fame members, including Donna McKenzie, Rowdy Yates, Pat Fant, Outlaw Dave Andrews, Dan Gallo and Ed Chandler.

“RFC is very proud of these three accomplished professionals and their contributions to radio in Texas,” said Fant, Chief Operating Officer of RFC.

“In taking their place with other RFC talent in the Hall, they are underscoring the unique role that RFC plays in radio syndication, music and entertainment, and within the new audio landscape for corporate communications.”

This year’s induction ceremony will be held on November 5th at the Texas Museum of Broadcasting and Communications in Kilgore.

Jim Carola of KILT fame has died

Jim Carola

Jim Carola, 83, the longtime news director and anchor for 610 and 100.3 KILT Houston, passed away Monday.

"Jim Carola is not only a Houston icon, but will always be remembered as a class act," Texas Radio Hall of Famer and former KILT colleague T.J. Callahan told mikemcguff.com.   "Jim was loved by all who crossed his path, and I was blessed to have learned the radio news business firsthand from him and Robert B. McEntire."

"How I loved my time on KILT with Jim Carola,"  Texas Radio Hall of Fame director emeritus Josh Holstead, who went by 'Rowdy Yates' on KILT-FM, told mikemcguff.com.  "It was not only a blessing every day to work with such an iconic and legendary broadcaster, but a man who became such an integral part of my success on Houston radio and eventually the national stage. Not only was he the ultimate pro, but a super nice guy who had a very gentle approach to his management style that not only fostered loyalty among his employees, but set a great example that many others would apply in their own careers.  He was a fantastic husband, brother, uncle, and neighbor-and an equestrian’s equestrian.  He never met a horse he did not love, or a cowboy/cowgirl he did not like.  I will miss my friend so much, and I shall treasure our time together on and off the air and never forget the memorable moments I had working across the microphone from one of my radio heroes and (literal) lifelong friend, Jim Carola."

His career in broadcasting began unexpectedly as a young dancer on Channel 13 KTRK's "The Larry Kane Show."

Carola joined KILT in 1964 while still a junior at the University of Houston and became news director in 1970, dedicating 40 years to the station delivering the 20/20 newscasts.

"I listened to Jim Carola on the Big 610 growing up in the Westbury neighborhood of Houston, all of us teens did," Texas Radio Hall of Famer and Houston TV's Don Armstrong told mikemcguff.com.  "It was his style and delivery that helped set my sights on a broadcasting career. When I finally met him at the Houston rodeo, he shook my hand like we had been friends all our lives. He was what everyone in our business strives to be, loved."

Upon his exit from KILT in 2004, Carola immediately joined the new FM News Channel 97.5 KFNC. Founding KFNC general manager Pat Fant was shocked Carola, who he had been listening to since college, was willing to work for the upstart Houston news station.

"He was the nicest and genuinely most talented news guy anyone could ever have on their radio station," Fant told mikemcguff.com. "He was the best."

Fant, a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, provided us with this irreverent Carola promo clip from FM News Channel 97.5 to reminisce with:

Beyond radio, Carola was a familiar voice in Houston sports. He served as the public-address announcer for Super Bowl VIII at Rice Stadium and was the voice of the Houston Oilers for 28 years at the Astrodome.

In 1979, after the Oilers' heartbreaking AFC Championship loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carola introduced the team to a full Astrodome crowd during the unforgettable Luv Ya Blue era homecoming.

When the Houston Texans launched in 2002, Carola was selected as the PA announcer for the franchise’s first four seasons, continuing his legacy as the voice of Houston football.

He was inducted into the 2003 Texas Radio Hall of Fame class.

After retiring from the radio and sports world, Carola retired to the Texas Hill Country.

Funeral Service for KILT’s Jim Carola:

Friday, February 28th-11am
St. Cecilia Catholic Church
11720 Joan of Arc
Houston, TX 77024

The family has requested guests to wear/accessorize in purple.

George Baches award for excellence in broadcast marketing call for entries

Beginning in 2019, the Texas Radio Hall of Fame will recognize and honor those members of the broadcast community whose creativity and art amplify and fortify the work of those on both sides of the microphone. The work of these essential professionals often comes to life in the form of promos, imaging, contests, sweepstakes and events as well as in traditional media such as billboards, TV commercials, and print ads that promote the station’s programming and personalities.

This spotlight will also call to mind the esoteric media that complements the on air product, such as websites, logos, mascots, newsletters, email communications, and marketing materials.

The award category will embrace virtually all static (“non-live”) executions of verbal and non-verbal messaging, including audio, video, display and online.

The Texas Radio Hall of Fame, following an overture by a number of its inductees, will name this annual award after George Baches. For over 20 years, Baches’ work supported the branding and visual imaging of dozens of Texas broadcasters and his legacy serves as a reminder that the creation and perpetuation of “station-ality”-- the “stuff between the records”--is magnified by the art that adorns everything from bumper stickers to t-shirts and countless other display and marketing platforms.

As both an independent contractor and an agency team member, this talented graphic artist, among other broadcast-related projects, brought new life and international acclaim to KLOL’s Runaway Radio logo in Houston and the KISS-FM logo in San Antonio. He was also responsible for the creation of the Outlaw Radio and Houston’s Rock 103.7 FM logos, along with countless t-shirts, premiums and marketing materials.

The Texas Radio Hall of Fame is pleased to introduce its inaugural George Baches Award for Excellence in Broadcast Marketing Excellence, with a call for entries in 2019, to honor the memory, talent and contributions of George Baches, along with those who serve this important need in the radio industry.

Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2009 ceremony highlights

Rowdy Yates of 100.3 KILT sent me this great recap of the 2009 Texas Radio Hall of Fame ceremony:

It was the biggest and best, Most attended and most comfortable. Held in a historic place, Tin Hall, there was no better venue to showcase legendary talent, than a legendary landmark, which has hosted concerts and special events since 1889.

About 350 were in attendance and the faces that belonged to the voices were a 'who's who' of Texas Radio royalty including Paul Berlin, Joe Ladd, Pam Ivey, Crash Collins, Mac Hudson, Arch Yancey, Michael Berry, Bill Young, Bill Moffett, Chuck Dunaway, Jim Carola and R.B. McEntire just scratch the surface.

Award for "best preserved personality" had to go to Dr. Bruce Nelson, who is as witty as ever, and is in better shape today than he was during his days here at KENR. Dr. Bruce is the General Manager of KFTX in Corpus Christi, and is recognized for breaking an unknown artist named John Conlee and his tune "Rose Colored Glasses." John placed 27 hits in the country top 40, including 7 number 1's. Houston made him a star.

Most touching moment came when Cathy Forsythe of KACC was inducted and honored. Her award was accepted by her children. Cathy passed away from cancer a few years ago, and contributed more than her own good work to Texas radio. Running KACC in Alvin, she built and developed that college radio program into the most recognized in the country (this is a Junior College mind you) that has produced numerous radio industry pros including Wendy Miller, Tom Fontaine, Bobby "Slam" Duncan and TV personalities that now work for KPRC, Telemundo and ESPN.

Paul Ray works on the radio in Austin-he is only the second 'public' radio personality to be inducted. He can be heard on KUT-FM hosting a show dedicated to soul and blues from the 40's through the 70's. What made me laugh the most was his story of realizing the impact that music had on everyone-be it good or bad. He recalls his older sister being punished for playing a sacrilegious and sinful b-side when she was young. Her father smashed to pieces a vinyl 45 straight from Satan's studio. It was a Christmas standard "White Christmas" recorded by The Drifters.

JP Pritchard and Lana Hughes from KTRH could have kept us entertained for hours. To see the big framed, big voiced 'gold standard' for morning news in Houston show a softer side was enough to make a few of us tear up, and her story of how she got her job at KTRH will make most of us giggle for the next few days.

Standing ovations came for Houston TV and radio star Larry Kane (who is no longer with us) KQUE's Scott Arthur and legendary rocker Colonel St. James who helped make top stations out of 97 Rock and KLOL, and has contributed to the success of KLDE, KILT and KKRW.

From the business side of things, I'd like to say that Bill Bailey is still a draw. He has not been on the radio for some time, but his involvement with the Houston rodeo, and his work as a Harris County Constable has done much to keep him in the public eye. On the day he should have taken center stage, and soaked in every bit of the spotlight he deserved for his good work, he shared the stage with two compadres from his days at KIKK, which proved to be tasteful and quite classy. * I will point out, this is the only time I have used those terms to describe him, Joe and Arch!

As for the music heard on radio then and today, there were numerous people in attendance who spun the platters from unknowns who would became giants. B.J. Thomas, ZZ Top and Kenny Rogers were called "Houston Crud" but they became rock, pop and country music legends -they owe Texas (and primarily Houston) deejays for taking a chance on them.

Behind the scenes you might never know the name Tom Merriman. But the short songs you hear in between the records you all know, and have sung along with since the 50's. His "TM Productions" recorded more snappy and snazzy jingles for more Texas radio stations than any other. He is also credited for creating sixty second sing alongs we all grew up with for Nestle and others, and was also the man credited for creating "Otto the Orkin Man" bringing prestige and personality to pest control.

Scott Arthur was the first person to receive an award at the ceremony, and he set the tone for not only radio's past, but it's future. After 40 years he knows the formula: "personality, creativity, freedom and fun" -that is what works, that is what wins.

Voting open for Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2026 induction class

(Houston, TX) July 24, 2026: The Texas Radio Hall of Fame (TRHOF) has released the names of the fifty (50) nominees for its 2026 Induction Class. The voting portal will be open and accessible to voting members in good standing via www.TRHOF.net through midnight on Monday, August 10, 2026.

UPDATE AUGUST 2026
Texas Radio Hall of Fame announces 20206 inductees

TRHOF Executive Director Doug Harris, a 2011 Inductee, reports an especially robust year of nominations, which he attributes to the recent addition of two new categories of recognition.

“Our ‘Small Markets, Big Voices’ outreach clearly hit home with those who fit that description as well as their fans,” observes Harris.  “For many of these broadcasters, this is their first exposure to Hall of Fame consideration and we welcome their involvement.”

In 2025, the TRHOF board approved the addition of a Lone Star Legacies category to recognize influential figures in Texas Radio history who have passed on.  Harris notes that this practice returns in 2026.

Voting members will have the opportunity to select twenty (20) 2026 inductees by reviewing their names, bios, and photos through the voting portal on the TRHOF website.

“Our 2026 ballot is a ‘great read’ because it spotlights the amazing journeys of broadcasters from markets big and small and touches virtually every job description in our industry that connects to the on-air product.”

Over 160 broadcast professionals with ties to Texas radio were nominated for consideration by the TRHOF’s Internal Review Committee, who independently and anonymously made their recommendations on the final fifty. Voting members of the TRHOF will now determine the twenty individuals who will be honored on November 7, 2026, during the TRHOF’s Annual Induction Ceremony at the Texas Broadcast Museum in Kilgore, TX.
