Katalina Bell leaves KTAB Abilene

Katalina Bell is saying goodbye to KTAB 32 Abilene, with her final day at the Nexstar station set for July 1, 2026.

UPDATE:  Katalina Bell will continue her career as a meteorologist at KWTX 10 Waco-Temple-Killeen.

Here is what Bell posted online about her KTAB departure:

"After two amazing years, my time at KTAB is coming to an end. July 1st will be my final day on air.

When I moved to the Big Country, I never imagined how much this community would come to mean to me. From covering severe weather and sharing forecasts to visiting schools, hosting a podcast, and connecting with so many of you along the way, these past two years have been filled with memories I will always cherish.

Thank you for trusting me, supporting me, and allowing me to be a small part of your lives the last 2 years. It has truly been an honor to serve this incredible community.

As for what’s next, I promise that announcement is coming soon.

For now, I just want to say thank you. The Big Country will always have a special place in my heart."

Bell joined KTAB (and KRBC) as a meteorologist in July 2024 after graduating from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology. During her two years forecasting weather in West Texas, she delivered daily forecasts and covered changing weather conditions for viewers across the Big Country.

"Back in the summer of 2024, Kat and I started our journeys in the Big Country together as weekend meteorologists for KRBC and KTAB. What started as two young meteorologists learning the ropes quickly turned into a great friendship and partnership," Meteorologist Carter Vandrasik added. "Over the years, we visited schools all across the Big Country, met hundreds of students, covered everything from severe weather to winter storms, and even started the Carter & Kat’s Weather Chat podcast. Some of my favorite memories at the station involve those school visits, community events, and the countless weather conversations we shared."

Originally from Bulverde, just outside San Antonio, Bell developed her passion for weather while studying at Texas A&M. While in College Station, she was active in TAMSCAMS, a student-run organization within the Department of Atmospheric Sciences.

Bell also gained hands-on research experience as an undergraduate research assistant under Dr. Timothy Logan, studying lightning sprites and aerosols associated with tropical cyclones. Her work included participation in a rapid response research team focused on collecting data during developing weather events to support meteorological and disaster preparedness research.

In addition to research, Bell worked as a student meteorologist delivering forecasts across television and radio platforms.

No word yet on Bell’s next career move following her departure from KTAB.

Ron Rosseau retires from KTAB Abilene

After more than four decades in television and two separate stints at the station, Ron Rosseau is signing off from KTAB Abilene.

Rosseau retires from his role as KTAB’s morning anchor on June 26, 2026.

A familiar face to Big Country viewers, Rosseau first joined KTAB in 1981 as a reporter shortly after graduating from Abilene Christian University with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication.

He remained with the station until 1999 before leaving for Washington, D.C., where he joined the professional staff of former U.S. Congressman Charles Stenholm.

Following about 18 months in the nation’s capital, Rosseau returned to the private sector and helped market a filtered internet service. After the company was sold, he worked as a staff announcer at KGNZ Radio before returning to KTAB in 2006.

Back at the station, Rosseau became a staple of KTAB’s morning and noon newscasts, serving as both anchor and producer and helping start viewers’ days for nearly two decades.

Outside of broadcasting, Rosseau devoted time to ministry work as a fill-in preacher and Sunday school teacher. He also stayed active for years through jogging and racquetball.

In retirement, Rosseau plans to spend more time with family and friends. He and his wife have three children and one grandson, with another grandchild expected soon.

Stepping into the KTAB morning anchor role is veteran broadcaster Pam Nolan, who was introduced to viewers this week.

Nolan brings more than three decades of television news and journalism experience to the desk. Most recently, she served as journalism department head and journalism teacher at San Antonio Christian School, where she led the school’s journalism program, developed curriculum and mentored students in reporting, writing and broadcast production.

Before transitioning into education, Nolan built a longtime career in Texas television news. She worked as an anchor and reporter at KWES-TV in Midland/Odessa from 2012 to 2018, anchoring and producing multiple evening newscasts.

Her previous stops included KOSA-TV in Odessa, where she spent more than 13 years across two tenures anchoring evening newscasts and helping guide newsroom coverage, KMID-TV in Midland, and KXAN-TV in Austin, where she anchored morning newscasts and covered state government and court proceedings.

Like Rosseau, Nolan is also an Abilene Christian University graduate, earning her degree in mass communication and media studies.

Sam Nichols to retire from KTAB Abilene

Sam Nichols announced Monday that he will retire from his role as chief meteorologist at KTAB Abilene after 21 years, effective April 20, 2026.

"Over these past twenty-one years I have had the pleasure and honor of serving the people of the Big Country," Nichols posted on social.  "In addition to the wonderful viewers, I have had the distinct privilege of working with colleagues that are not only true professionals, but dear friends as well.  From tornadoes to floods, to droughts, it’s been a great ride but it’s time to hand the weather clicker over to someone else and have some free time for a change.  I wonder what that will feel like! I cant wait to find out!!"

After retiring from a 33-year coaching career, Nichols returned to KTAB, where he previously spent 13 years as a weekend weather anchor and made his first television appearance delivering weekend weather forecasts in 1990.

He has been voted “Favorite TV Weather Person” multiple times in the Abilene Reporter-News Readers’ Choice Awards and received the prestigious Bell Award from the Texas Retired Teachers Association for outstanding media coverage of education issues. 

Before entering television, Nichols spent 33 years coaching women’s basketball, including 12 seasons as head coach at McMurry University. He retired from coaching in 2007, having been the winningest women’s basketball coach in McMurry history. In 2017, he was inducted into the McMurry University Athletic Hall of Honor and later named the women’s basketball coach of the All-Century Team. In 2026, the university further recognized his legacy by naming the “Sam Nichols Court” and inducting him into McMurry’s Legends Corner on February 1, 2026.

During his tenure, Nichols coached four All-Americans, led multiple ASC West Division championship teams, and oversaw a program in which every student-athlete graduated within four years. He was named ASC West Coach of the Year in 2006, and three of his teams from the 1999–2000, 2005–2006, and 2006–2007 seasons were also inducted into the McMurry Athletic Hall of Honor.

Across his coaching career, Nichols’ teams won more than 70 percent of their games, earning him induction into the Women’s Basketball Coaches of America 600 Victory Club in 2005. A lifelong Abilene resident, Nichols attended McMurry University and earned his master’s degree in education from Abilene Christian University. 

Nichols is the founder and president of Basketball Smiles, a nonprofit organization that provides free basketball camps in inner-city neighborhoods throughout the Bahamas. Founded in 1999, the organization celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024 and has served more than 12,000 children, becoming one of the largest free basketball camp programs in the Caribbean.

Nichols and his wife, Sandy, are active in numerous local charitable efforts and serve on the Abilene Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee. Most recently, Nichols was selected by the United States Air Force Air Mobility Command to represent Abilene and the Big Country as one of 30 civic leaders nationwide participating in the Air Mobility Command Civic Leaders Program.

"A big THANKS to all of you who have trusted me for your weather information for these past twenty-one years, I appreciate you all, so much - Especially the over 20,000 followers on my Facebook page – I will certainly miss my 'Facebook Live Severe Weather Updates,'" Nichols added. "I am in great health and looking forward to spending more time with Sandy, kids, and grandkids, along with more time at the golf course.  On to my next adventure!"

Tyler Henderson promoted to KTAB Abilene weekend anchor

Tyler Henderson has been promoted to KTAB Abilene weekend anchor and reporter in August 2022.

Henderson joined KTAB in May 2021 as a digital multimedia journalist.  

The Abilene Christian University grad was a host for NPR's KACU 89.5 and an ACU Baseball Beat Writer.

According to his bio, Henderson is known as the first ACU student to call a football game on ESPN while enrolled.

Bob Bartlett celebrates 45 years at KTAB News

Bob Bartlett helped build KTAB News Abilene from the ground up and is now celebrating 45 years with the station.

Bartlett and his baritone voice were hired on August 20, 1979, before the station began broadcasting. Speaking of building, the station says Bartlett actually helped build the first desks in the newsroom.

Later, on October 6th, KTAB went on air, his baritone voice being the first to be heard.

Already a familiar face on Big Country television, Bartlett had worked for then-competitor KRBC for eight years.

Throughout his career, Bartlett has reported on sports and served as news director, managing editor, and anchor. He has interviewed everyone from President Ronald Reagan to U.S. Senator John Tower and Bob Seger.

Growing up in the Midwest, Bartlett got his start in broadcasting as a radio DJ while still in high school.  He continued in radio station work until moving into TV in Abilene.  A piece of trivia for you: Bartlett's first TV appearance was a 1970 public TV fundraiser in Detroit, Michigan.

Bartlett has said in the past that some of the memorable stories he's covered include traveling to Somalia for a relief mission with Dyess Air Force Base airmen. He also anchored live coverage of the arrival of the B-1 bomber Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene in 1986. For decades, he hosted the West Texas Rehab Center’s annual telethon.

Clemente Morales leaves Abilene Today on KRBC and KTAB

Clemente Morales is leaving his Abilene Today meteorologist/anchor position with KRBC and KTAB Abilene as of August 2025.

"As I wrap up my final shows here at the station, I never forget about what success I’ve had and how I attribute that to the people that put us on TV every day," Morales posted.  "Heather Easley is a wonderful coanchor to have but even she will tell you that what makes it all happen is our production crew. Today I feel very special to have worked with Stephen, Kaitlyn, Caden, Desiree, and Tim. You guys are the best and thanks for always giving it your very best. You are appreciated. Thanks for the card, the gift, but most of all for the wonderful memories!"

Weekend meteorologist Carter Vandrasik takes over next to Easley on Abilene Today at 6 AM and then again on Abilene Midday at 11:30. 

Morales's career in broadcasting began in 1985. While pursuing a nursing degree, Clemente took a part-time job at KRBC answering phones in the evenings. It didn’t take long for his interest in television to take root, and soon, he found himself learning every corner of the newsroom.

Over the years, Clemente wore many hats—News Photographer, Reporter, Assignment Editor, Commercial Production Videographer—before finding his true calling in weather.

Morales was born in Hamlin and raised in Abilene for most of his life, and is a Cooper High School graduate who attended Hardin-Simmons University.

KTAB - KRBC Abilene rebrand to West Texas Today and West Texas Daily

KTAB and KRBC Abilene morning anchor Heather Easley and meteorologist Carter Vandrasik announced that, starting in January 2026, the Abilene Today and Abilene Midday newscasts changed their names to West Texas Today and West Texas Daily.

"We’re excited to now bring our coverage to San Angelo / the Concho Valley, in addition to Abilene / the Big Country," the post said.

Live Telecast of Texas Governor’s 2025 “State of the State” Address and Democratic Party Response February 2nd

IRVING, TX (January 27, 2025) – Nexstar Media Group, Inc., announced today that its television stations across the state of Texas will carry a multi-market live telecast of Governor Greg Abbott’s 2025 “State of the State” address on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. CT. The speech will air on 15 Nexstar television stations serving 14 Texas markets and be telecast throughout the state. As a public service, Nexstar will make the live feed of the telecast available to every broadcast company serving Texas.

The 2025 State of the State address is expected to be one of Governor Abbott’s most widely watched speeches in years. The live address will focus on border security, school choice and the need for bail reform. The Governor will also list the most important “emergency issues” he wants state lawmakers to address during the 2025 legislative session. Following Governor Abbott’s address, the Texas Democratic Party will respond by detailing its own agenda for the future of the state.

The one-hour address will bring together potentially more than 25 million viewers across Texas and will air on 15 Nexstar television stations serving the state, including: KDAF-TV (CW) in Dallas, KIAH-TV (CW) in Houston, KXAN-TV (NBC) in Austin, KWKT-TV (FOX) in Waco, KVEO-TV/SVEO-TV (NBC/CBS) in Harlingen/Brownsville, KTAL-TV (NBC) in Shreveport, LA, KTSM-TV (NBC) in El Paso, KETK-TV (NBC) in Tyler, KAMR-TV (NBC) in Amarillo, KLBK-TV (CBS) in Lubbock, KMID-TV (ABC) in Midland/Odessa, KFDX-TV (NBC) in Wichita Falls, KTAB-TV (CBS) in Abilene, and KSLT-TV (CBS) in San Angelo. Anavid Reyes, KVUE 24 Austin morning traffic anchor, joins KPRC 2 in same role

Anavid Reyes is leaving KVUE 24 Austin where she has been the morning traffic anchor for the last three years to come back to Houston and take the same role at KPRC 2.

So we now know the answer to the much asked question, who is taking over morning traffic on channel 2 after Jennifer Reyna. 

Here is what she posted on Facebook:

So hard to say goodbye to this crew, but the time has come... today was my last day as part of #KVUE Daybreak’s morning team serving as their Traffic Anchor for the past 3 years. It’s been an awesome ride, mostly because of this bunch. A big thank you to our loyal viewers who tuned in every morning to watch this crazy crew!
I am happy to announce I’ll be joining KPRC2 / Click2Houston morning team as their Traffic Anchor. I’m THRILLED to be joining such a wonderful team. It’s home for this Houston native, a HUGE blessing to be even closer now to family.

So many people have been asking me about where Jennifer Reyna is heading. I have no idea at this point, but at least we know who is taking over her position.

But back to Reyes, this will actually be a homecoming because back in 2015, she was a web editor for click2houton.com. You might have also heard her as a News92FM KROI feature reporter and web editor from 2013 to 2015.

After Houston, Reyes went to work for KTAB-KRBC Abilene in 2015. She moved to KVUE Austin in 2017.

Reyes, who was born in Monterrey, Mexico, but raised in Houston, is a University of Texas at San Antonio grad. She interned at KABB San Antonio.

KPRC 2 officially announces Anavid Reyes hiring for morning traffic position after Jennifer Reyna:

April 3, 2020 – Houston, TX – In an effort to better serve our community now and even more so after this crisis passes, KPRC 2 continues to add resources to newscasts. Houston-native Anavid Reyes will join the KPRC 2 News Today team as Traffic Reporter/Investigator and will hit the air in early April. She will also be spearheading KPRC’s “What’s Driving Houston” mobility initiative.

Reyes comes to KPRC from KVUE-TV in Austin, where she helped launch the traffic department and served as the station’s Daybreak morning traffic anchor. She has also worked in Abilene, Texas, where she produced, wrote, edited, reported and anchored an all-Spanish newscast for Telemundo, as well as in English for the company’s sister stations, KRBC-TV and KTAB-TV News. Prior to that Anavid worked as a web editor for KPRC’s Click2Houston.com digital platform and served as a feature reporter and web editor at Houston’s News 92FM.

Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Anavid’s family moved to Houston when she was a child. She attended Langham Creek High School, then the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is the first college graduate in her family.

 Robert “Butch” Pitts, 73, of Lufkin, who worked for KRBE and KILT Houston has died.

Karen Taffanelli leaves Telemundo Abilene

Karen Taffanelli left her Telemundo Abilene anchor role in January 2025.

Taffanelli joined the Telemundo Abilene – KTAB news team in November 2022, anchoring weekday evening newscasts, Noticias Abilene.

She also served as a creator and producer for the first Nexstar Broadcasting Spanish newscast, Noticias Tampa Hoy, for WFLA in Tampa.

Taffanelli began her career in radio broadcasting at Telemundo T31, Orlando, where she was a noon and weekend news producer. 

She also worked as a radio news anchor, producer, and talent at Univision Orlando (Entravision) and iHeartMedia. She received a nomination as a producer in the morning show category at the Paoli Awards in Orlando.

Taffanelli received her bachelor’s degree in Communication and Journalism from Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition, Karen held certificates in commercial radio hosting and sports journalism.

Kaiti Blake leaves KSAT San Antonio

Kaiti Blake announced she is leaving KSAT 12 San Antonio, but staying in Texas as a meteorologist. 

In an August 2022 Facebook post, Blake says she is now a meteorologist and communications representative for Oncor in Dallas. She adds Oncor is the largest transmission & distribution electric utility in Texas - serving a large area that includes DFW, Tyler, Midland/Odessa, Waco, and as far south as Round Rock.

Here is what Blake posted on Facebook about leaving San Antonio TV weather:

"I want to share with you that my time on the KSAT Roof is winding down. My husband and I will be starting a new adventure in the DFW area soon. (Oh, Theo is coming, too. 😸) My last day at KSAT will be July 6th.

This decision was 100% mine. I have been presented with an exciting opportunity outside of TV that will challenge me and take me out of my comfort zone. Most importantly, I’m keeping the title of, “meteorologist” - so, I’ll get to continue doing what I love. I’m really excited.

I want to thank our KSAT viewers for always being so supportive and loyal. Please know that my KSAT colleagues - from the news team, to our production folks who get us on the air every day - are working to serve YOU and truly have your best interests at heart.

I can’t say enough about Adam, Justin, Mike, & Sarah. It’s rare in TV to get to work with such great human beings. Yes, they’re awesome meteorologists. But, they’re even better PEOPLE & San Antonio is lucky to have them.

I also want to highlight a very specific group of followers on my social media accounts who got me help for my cat, Theo, a few years ago. I reached out in desperation and some of you pointed me in the right direction. Because of you, Theo is healthy & loving life. I could never repay you! And thank you ALL for always asking about him. It means so much.

Speaking of Theo, you’ll be able to keep up with his antics because I’ll be keeping my social media accounts going! My KSAT-branded pages will be going away after July 6th, but the following will still be active:

Blake joined KSAT 12 in April 2017 from her weekday morning and midday meteorologist position at KTAB/KRBC Abilene.

She previously worked for News Channel 12 WJTV Jackson, Mississippi as a weekend morning meteorologist. While at WJTV, Blake earned her master's degree in broadcast meteorology from Mississippi State University. She also worked as a teaching assistant for the university.

The Texas Tech University grad interned with KCBD 11 Lubbock and abc13 KTRK Houston.  

Blake was born and raised right outside of Houston.

Nexstar Media Inc. To Host Statewide Live Telecast of Texas Governor Abbott’s 2023 “State of the State” Address and a Democratic Response

IRVING, TX (February 7, 2023) – Nexstar Media Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXST), announced today that its television stations across the state of Texas will carry a multi-market live telecast of Governor Greg Abbott’s 2023 “State of the State” address on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. CT. The speech will air on 16 Nexstar television stations serving 14 Texas markets and be telecast throughout the state. As a public service, Nexstar will make the live feed of the telecast available to every broadcast company serving Texas.

Governor Abbott’s 2023 State of the State address will update Texans on his priorities for the 88th Legislative Session, highlight exceptional Texans from across the state, and outline his plans for building the Texas of tomorrow. Following Governor Abbott’s half-hour address, the Texas Democratic Party will respond with a ten-minute rebuttal. The last 20 minutes will be used for a round table discussion with members of the legislature and Nexstar journalists.

Avery Tomasco promoted to CBS Austin mornings

Avery Tomasco is the new CBS Austin News KEYE morning meteorologist, moving from weekend evenings.

Tomasco will be taking the place of meteorologist Nicole Hartford who is leaving for 11Alive WXIA Atlanta  and will hit the air there in February 2022.

"Life update and exciting news to share with you, friends... I have accepted a promotion to become the full-time morning meteorologist for CBS Austin News beginning next week (January 24th.) To say this is a dream come true would be an understatement... 

I grew up in Austin utterly fascinated by the weather. I’d fall asleep to “weather on the 8’s” as a kid, always glued to Mark Murray and Jim Spencer during every storm chance, running quickly from the TV to the back deck with my dad to observe and learn while monitoring my rinky-dink weather station I got for Christmas one year. I discovered quickly after my first internship that I wanted to be a morning meteorologist, and I wanted to do so in Austin... to finally be stepping into that role 10 years later is surreal and difficult to put into words.

I get to continue doing what I love, keeping you ahead of our wild Texas weather while (hopefully) teaching you something new along the way. I get to stay in Austin, raise my little girl in the town I grew up in surrounded by friends and family, and teach her all of the things that made me fall in love with meteorology to begin with. 

A huge thank you to my news director, Rob, and our general manager, Amy, for taking a chance on me four years ago and for taking another chance on me now. And thank YOU for coming along for this incredible ride. I truly have you, your trust, and your viewership to thank. I am beyond honored, and I can’t wait to get started!"

As he mentioned his Central Texas upbringing, the Houston born and Austin raised Tomasco attended Eanes Elementary, Hill Country middle school and Westlake High School.

While in school, Tomasco visited KEYE 42 Chief Meteorologist Troy Kimmel which drove his desire to forecast weather.

Before returning to Austin at KEYE, Tomasco was the morning meteorologist for KTAB/KRBC Abilene.

The Texas A&M University Bachelor of Science (BS) Meteorology grad interned across the street at FOX 7 Austin KTBC.

Tomasco, a self-described "true weather nerd" earned his Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorological Society right before joining CBS Austin.

Nexstar and Dish Network make Christmas agreement

 

Nexstar’s 164 Local TV Stations and Cable Network, WGN America, have been restored to Dish Network.

I joked last week that the TEGNA the DirecTV/U-Verse agreement was a Christmas miracle, but then the Nexstar vs Dish Network deal was actually on Christmas Day!

Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXST) (“Nexstar”), today announced that it has reached a comprehensive multi-year distribution agreement with DISH Network. The agreement restores Nexstar’s 164 local television stations across the country and Nexstar’s wholly-owned cable network, WGN America, to DISH Network’s programming line-up. WGN America will also launch on DISH’s streaming service, Sling TV, in early 2021. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The agreement means that more than 5 million DISH subscribers will again have access to the highly-rated network and local entertainment, sports, and news programming provided by Nexstar television stations and by WGN America, home of the country’s only live prime-time national newscast, NewsNation.

During the last three months, Nexstar successfully completed more than 250 distribution agreements with its satellite, cable, telco, and streaming partners. Combined with similar agreements reached with other providers in 2019, Nexstar now has long-term visibility regarding future retransmission and carriage fees covering 90% of the company’s footprint through 2022.

Nexstar’s local television stations and WGN America had been off DISH Network’s satellite system since Dec. 2. We regret the inconvenience experienced by our viewers and look forward to again providing them with leading network and local programming.

Dylan Smith is joining KCBD 11 Lubbock as a meteorologist as of February 2026.

- KCBD Lubbock weather team announces transition

Smith left his KRBC Abilene chief meteorologist position as of December 2025.

He joined KRBC in December 2025 from KTAB Abilene, where he served as a morning meteorologist.

The Texas A&M University grad  grew up down by Corpus Christi in the town of Gregory-Portland

Don't confuse this Smith with Dylan Smith of WTOC, Savannah, Ga., who previously worked in Texas at KWES Midland.
