Tech's Contributions to Rock and Roll

I like music and I like technology. That's why this PCWorld article is so interesting. Patrick Miller writes about the convergence of both and how things constantly change in live performances:

Roger Waters Pig 3
Rock simply wouldn't have rocked without electric guitars, Marshall amp stacks, the Vox Box, amplifiers capable of projecting the music to the crowd, or stage effects that helped create a spectacle.

U2 review

Bono and U2 are thinking big this time. Here is a review of the show:

A pop star fishes a 12-year-old boy out of the audience during his concert, runs around the stage with him, holds his hand, before returning him to his parents. Later, a group of volunteers holding candles fan out along the ramp encircling the stage.
Is it Michael Jackson? Sure sounds like it. No, it’s Bono. And the show was last night at Giants Stadium, where U2 put on an extravaganza that only Jackson and Liberace could have imagined. READ MORE

Chron, KVUE and DMN reporters leave jobs for Texas Tribune

The Texas Tribune is a nonprofit news site based in Austin that will launch this November 3rd. The site has stolen away good reporters from top media sites around the state reports Poynter:

Elise Hu, Matt Stiles and Emily Ramshaw are all award-winning journalists who had full-time jobs at some of Texas' largest media outlets -- KVUE-TV in Austin, the Houston Chronicle and The Dallas Morning News, respectively.

But in August, they quit their jobs for new opportunities at the Texas Tribune, a nonprofit news site that is set to launch Nov. 3 and has raised enough money to sustain itself for about three years.

Why would journalists leave a full-time job at an established news organization to work for a start-up? For Hu, Stiles and Ramshaw, a better question is, "Why not?" READ MORE

I think this is a great move for the journalism industry. Don't forget about the good work also being done at texaswatchdog.org.

Which Houston TV station was really first in HD?

Lots of Houston TV stations claim to be first in the HD race, but Ken Hoffman found out who was the real winner:

Both Channel 11 and Channel 13 started airing their news in high definition in 2007.

Back in 1999, Channel 8, Houston's public broadcasting station, aired The Houston Symphony: A Maestro's Farewell in HD. In 2001, Channel 8 used HDTV cameras to produce Mary Lou's Flip Flop Shop kiddie show. We'll overlook the fact that very few people had HD televisions back then. READ MORE

Former KTRK 13 anchor Minerva Perez talks to Mike McGuff about new show, U2

Minerva Pérez is a familiar face to television viewers in places like Houston, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Antonio and Austin among others. She is an award winning journalist who was the first Latina News Anchor at KTRK TV/ABC 13 in Houston where she spent 15 and half years.

Now she is host of Latina Voices: Smart Talk on Houston PBS and Owner/President of Minerva Pérez Media, LLC, a Public Relations/Communications firm. Pérez was nice enough to conduct an interview with me for mikemcguff.com about the show and her appearance on a U2 song!

Mike McGuff: Tell us about Latina Voices? Why do you think this show needed to be on the air?

Minerva Pérez: Latina Voices: Smart Talk is a talk show with a Latina perspective and the first of its kind in the country - Latinas talking about important issues in English. I created it with the help of Texas Super Lawyer Sofia Adrogue and PBS Senior Producer and Host of PBS' Living Smart, Patricia Gras. We lend voice to a segment of our community that is not being addressed. There was no other Latina voice anywhere reacting to what's happening around us. Did you see a lot of Latinas being asked what they thought about Vote 08? Obama? McCain? CNN and most networks did a poor job of including the Latino voice during the elections. Also, where are the Latina voices on National TV Talk shows? Until very recently, there was only Elizabeth Vargas, who I happened to know during my Phoenix reporting days. We were both on the street covering the impeachment of Governor Evan Mecham back in the mid 80's. When Latinos are fast becoming the majority minority, and the predominant ethnic group in most major cities these days, the Latina voice is missing in the national discourse. That is why I created Latina Voices: Smart Talk.

MM: What kind of topics do you cover?

MP: About our topics: we cover the gamut. All topics are important to the Latino/a but nobody is asking them what they think of important issues. So we covered the historic Presidential Inauguration, Health Care, the Latino Vote, Obama, Women's Wellness, Global Warming, Immigration, Texas Lady Pioneers, Financial Strategies, Celebrities, everything that most Americans enjoy or worry about. Latinos are no different when it comes to these topics. We ask the smart questions nobody else is asking.

Again, I think this show needed to be on the air for the following reasons: the lack of a Latina voice on TV; It is serving an underserved target market. And HoustonPBS thought so too. They picked us up in January with plans to roll out nationally.

MM: Tell me about some of your favorite guests.

MP: Favorite guests? Former Houston Astros, Jeff Bagwell, who is one of the most 'down-home' guys in the world. Good heart too. His philanthropy is amazing. He was one our first guests. Also, Washington, D.C. based author Tom Finn, author of "Are You Clueless?" for his vision about tolerance.

MM: What's next for the show?

MP: One of our next guests includes the Vice President of Guatemala, Dr. Rafael Espada.

MM: Off topic, but when we worked together at KTRK, I figured out your anchoring work at KTLA in Los Angeles was sampled in the U2 song Desire (Hollywood Remix). So how is Bono and have you seen him lately?

MP: About the U2-Bono connection and since you asked... I worked in Los Angeles before moving to Houston. Apparently, when U2 was laying down tracks in a Hollywood Recording studio for one of their 80's albums, and unbeknownst to me, they lifted my voice from one of my newscasts and included it on their "Desire-Hollywood remix." Not being a U2 fan, I didn't know about it. Someone in the KTLA control room told me they heard my voice on a Bono album. I actually don't remember who told me. Regardless, it's my voice on the Desire track and that's my other claim to fame...even though it's just a few seconds reading about another L-A crime story..."shot him in the shoulder."

While in LA I met a lot of stars: Jane Seymour, Carol Burnett, Edward James Olmos, Andy Garcia, Jimmy Smits, Bob Hope (opened the door for me at Stuart Andersen Steak House), but I never met Bono. Can't tell you what he's doing these days. I just wish he'd pass along some of the Desire royalties.

KHOU 11's Mark Greenblatt wins national Emmy

I told you how Channel 11 KHOU's investigative team was nominated for a national Emmy (not the same as the Lone Star Emmys). Guess what, they won:

On Monday, The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) presented KHOU-TV with an award for Outstanding Regional News Story – Investigative Reporting at the 30th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards in New York City.

Channel 11 was one of only two local stations in the nation to receive an award at the event and the only local station to be awarded in the investigative category. READ MORE

I didn't get a press release from Channel 11. I actually learned about this from blogHOUSTON. Kevin Whited says Channel 11 didn't send him a release either - someone else did. I wonder why KHOU does not send out press releases to blogs?

Kanye: "KHOU doesn't care about new media."

Hold it Kanye, that is not true. Now I see why President Obama called you a "jackass."  The station has blogs and Twitter accounts. I just hope it thinks of us next time there is some good news. And KHOU is not the only media to ignore blogs.   The other TV stations and media should send us news items too!

See what Mike McGuff did for Luxurata

Luxurata has been on hiatus from the Houston music scene but are about to make a big comeback with the new 1000 Days album. The band turned to me for help in creating a new Web site and social media presence.

I built the following web site for them at luxurata.com.

I also created a site for the band's Septic Records label - septicmusic.com.

Being that social networking is hot, I created various Web 2.0 accounts for the label's entire roster (Poor Dumb Bastards, DollyRockers, Luxurata). Check out how I tweaked Luxurata's MySpace page.

Having a Twitter, Facebook and MySpace account is one thing, but it all kind of gets crazy trying to keep everything updated. I created a solution for that.

Now Luxurata just has to post on the Septic Records blog to update it all. I designed the WordPress theme myself. See how it seems kind of septic in nature? I programmed everything so a post about Luxurata on that blog automatically feeds Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and the band's Web site. Just like that. Pretty painless.

Now make sure to catch the Luxurata record release party Friday October 2nd at Rudyard's British Pub! There will be plenty of updates on luxurata.com!

If I can do this for Luxurata and KTRK 13, what could I do for your business?

Dr. Oz and his show coming to Houston Saturday

The Dr. Oz Show is coming to Houston and helping to give free medical care at Reliant Center:

"The Dr. Oz Show," the new daily syndicated show hosted by cardiac surgeon and health expert Dr. Mehmet Oz, and the National Association of Free Clinics (NAFC), will hold an enormous free clinic at the Reliant Convention Center in Houston, Texas on Saturday September 26, 2009 to provide medical care to hundreds of people who have no form of basic health insurance. Dr. Oz will participate in the event and will devote an entire show to the plight of families living without basic health insurance and the heroic work of the medical volunteers who help them. The episode is scheduled to air in early October.

The September 26 free clinic will be staffed by close to 500 volunteers, including 160 doctors, 200 nurses, and other health workers from the surrounding area and across the nation. "The Dr. Oz Show" and the NAFC are also reaching out to the medical community in Houston for specialists to participate, including obstetrician/gynecologists, pediatricians, reconstructive plastic surgeons, oncologists, endocrinologists, cardiologists, emergency room doctors and otolaryngologists. The 168,000 square foot convention center floor will have more than 120 exam partition rooms and be set up to accommodate more than 1,600 people in one day.

This event will be massive in scope, taking place in Texas, the state which US Census data reveals has the highest percentage of uninsured people in the country with 25.2 percent. In Harris County, where the city of Houston is located, there are 1.3 Million people without health insurance.

Is Sam Malone going to 700 KSEV?

I try to be a news source for all things Sam Malone around here. A blog reader recently wrote me and said:

My guess where Sam lands....KSEV, to replace Pat Gray....bet on it!!

I went right to the source...Mr. Sam Malone and here is what he told me:

I'm still enjoying retirement, and plan to relax and spend as much time as possible with the family. Having breakfast with my son everyday, helping with homework every night, and coaching his baseball team reminds you of what's really important in life!

Turns out Sam recently had a guest spot on Paul Bettencort's 700 KSEV show and some of the audience thought this meant more.

My guess is that a big name like Sam Malone will be on Houston radio sooner than later. You wouldn't believe the amount of people who Google Sam's name every single day and end up here looking for news about him.

NASA is really getting into the social media world:

NASA astronaut Jeff Williams, who will command the next International Space Station mission, is using Twitter, a blog and short video clips to provide a unique, behind the scenes insight into his training in Russia. Once in orbit, Williams will become the first space station commander to share his experiences using Twitter.

Williams Twitter username is Astro_Jeff. He is in his final month of training at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia. He will be providing a look at his experiences in Star City and at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Williams will launch to the space station aboard a Soyuz spacecraft with Soyuz Commander Max Suraev and spaceflight participant Guy Laliberte from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Sept. 30. Williams will become a flight engineer for the Expedition 21 crew when he arrives at the complex and later will command Expedition 22. He will spend six months in space.

Williams will be making his third trip to space. He first flew on shuttle mission STS-101 in May 2000, during which he was the lead spacewalker. He served as a flight engineer aboard the space station for Expedition 13 in 2006. Williams has logged more than 193 days in space, including more than 19 hours during three spacewalks.

Fox 4 KDFW's Lauren Przybyl gets interrogated

Fox 4 KDFW's Good Day gets a new anchor in Lauren Przybyl who I swear I knew at Baylor University. Can she make a splash as she replaces Megan Henderson now at KTLA in Los Angeles (the anchor I was crushing on in June when I was in La La Land)?

The Fort Worth Star Telegram gets down to business with Przybyl. Hopefully no CIA interrogators were used in this Q and A.

Lauren Przybyl’s biography includes this line: "Yes, 'y’ is the only vowel in her last name. She often hears, 'Would you like to buy a vowel?’" She probably also hears, "How is that pronounced?" (For the record: prezbul.) But come Monday morning, more people in Dallas-Fort Worth will know, as Przybyl joins Tim Ryan as co-host of KDFW/Channel 4’s Good Day.

Przybyl replaces the popular Megan Henderson, who left in February to take a job at Los Angeles station KTLA. I told you how NPR's Morning Edition anchor Steve Inskeep was in Houston reporting on our fine city. Well the stories are mostly finished and one of my high school friends was interviewed for a piece:

"In 2013, it will be possible to live all over town — and live a full life — via light rail," said Jay Crossley, of the advocacy group Houston Tomorrow.

That means that people in America's oil capital could have the option to use less oil, by leaving the car at home. On the train, Crossley can look out the window and see one major problem: There is a lot of vacant land along the rail line. For a variety of reasons, developers have not yet rushed to build homes and stores within walking distance.

Crossley thinks part of the problem is that Mayor White, like all Houston officials before him, has done relatively little urban planning. And with Houston's lack of regulations, developers can often build where — and how — they see fit. READ THE REST

Jay tells me the interview took place at Tacos a Go Go in Midtown. I was amazed to hear this fact about Houston from Rice University sociologist Stephen Klineberg:

"The city of Houston covers 620 square miles," he says. "You could put inside the city limits of Houston, simultaneously — I kid you not — the cities of Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago and Detroit." READ THE REST

VIDEO: Houston street art documentary

Houston filmmaker Alex “PR!MO” Luster is working on a documentary about street artists who are into wheatpasting in the Bayou City:

Stick 'Em Up! is a documentary that takes an in depth look into the overshadowed world of wheat pasting in Houston, Texas.

Directed by Alex Luster. You will not only get a candid view of the daily life of several street artists but we will also focus on the other perspectives and opinions from city officials, art critics and everyday citizens. SEE A CLIP

Wonder what the heck wheatpasting is? READ MORE HERE You will see this kind of art mostly in Midtown, Montrose and downtown Houston. They are posters placed on abandoned buildings and other surfaces. I think this would qualify as an example.

Goodbye Jack FM, welcome 103.7 FM Houston's Adult Alternative

Did I call it, or did I call it! JACK has officially vacated the 103.7 frequency in Houston and now it is just 103.7 FM Houston's Adult Alternative.

Go look at the station's new Web site - http://1037online.com/ - and you can learn all about it.

Time to bring back David Sadof on Sunday nights. I want to be a guest DJ. Think of the free pub I could get the station!

Here is my decade old radio demo where I was trying to be the disaffected alternative rock DJ. I would clean up my act for 103.7 and be a professional broadcaster.  My voice is lower since I am 10 years older.

Poor design-choices in the Star Wars universe

John Scalzi of AMC makes a list of bad design decisions in the Star Wars universe. Here is an example of one:

mikemcguff-starwars1
R2-D2
Sure, he's cute, but the flaws in his design are obvious the first time he approaches anything but the shallowest of stairs. Also: He has jets, a periscope, a taser and oil canisters to make enforcer droids fall about in slapsticky fashion -- and no voice synthesizer. Imagine that design conversation: "Yes, we can afford slapstick oil and tasers, but we'll never get a 30-cent voice chip past accounting. That's just madness." READ THE REST

Houston foodie radio war?

The Houston Press' Richard Connelly writes about a big radio food show feud...maybe. It seems that it is 1560 The Game KGOW morning show man Lance Zierlein vs CNN 650 KIKK's foodie Cleverley Stone.

Let the battle of the AM bon vivants begin! READ MORE

Ken Hoffman and crew were fanning the flames of this war on 1560 The Game Wednesday and it made me wonder if this is staged. Could merry prankster Hoffman be creating some radio mischief?

I like the fact that Hoffman trashes the competition. It brings back the excitement of radio before a few companies owned all the stations. Can't make fun of the competition now because your company might own them (or soon will). I guess the only other station that does this is Cox on 93Q vs CBS' 100.3 KILT. That concerns commercial count, but that gets old quickly. Although I guess it has worked. Have you seen how those two station flipped in the publicly released ratings?

Cleverly said a few months ago I could come on her show.  I haven't acted on it because I am not sure I could add anything.  I went to Feast in June...does that qualify me? If Cleverly needs me for the feud I will go on and bash 1560 for free airtime.  Hey guys, sorry...love you, but this is broadcasting after all.

Easy women promise proves to be bad for Denmark tourism

Some clever marketer for Denmark tourism decided to "go viral" with a video that is causing lots of controversy. A beautiful blond actress was hired to play an unwed mother looking for her baby's daddy. The story goes the father was a tourist and the two had a one night fling. She doesn't know his name, but thought this YouTube video could help her find him.

Bad idea.

MIT students beat NASA on beer-money budget

Interesting story on Wired about how two MIT students launched a camera successfully into space for $148.

The two students (from MIT, of course) put together a low-budget rig to fly a camera high enough to photograph the curvature of the Earth. Instead of rockets, boosters and expensive control systems, they filled a weather balloon with helium and hung a styrofoam beer cooler underneath to carry a cheap Canon A470 compact camera. Instant hand warmers kept things from freezing up and made sure the batteries stayed warm enough to work.Of course, all this would be pointless if the guys couldn’t find the rig when it landed, so they dropped a prepaid GPS-equipped cellphone inside the box for tracking. Why NPR's Steve Inskeep is in Houston

I was listening to NPR's Morning Edition Tuesday and heard that anchor Steve Inskeep was out on assignment in Houston. That naturally made my ears perk up.

Turns out Swamplot has the answer as to why he is here.

Where is Dr. Phil on Houston TV?

I will admit that I never have watched an episode of Dr. Phil. The only thing I know about him is what I heard from a former Wichita Falls, TX resident where Dr. McGraw used to practice. Some thought he was odd there too.

Back on point, a blog reader asked me where Dr. Phil's show airs in Houston. It used to be on KPRC 2 at 3pm until this week, but now Oprah's new fave Dr. Oz occupies that spot. This leaves Dr. Phil to click his ruby slippers together and say aloud, "There's no place like my old time slot, there's no place like my old time slot."

I contacted KPRC 2 and was told:

"As of Monday September 14th, Dr. Phil is no longer on our schedule. Currently we do not have additional information on when the Dr. Phil program might air. The 3pm time slot has been filled by a new program: Dr. Oz, which we think folks will enjoy watching. It's a very fun, smart, and informative program."

So Dr. Phil fans might need therapy over this. Stay tuned.

KPRC 2's Jennifer Reyna rated daily on Twitter

It is no secret that KPRC 2 traffic anchor Jennifer Reyna has lots of fans. In fact my neighbor told me he switched from KTRK to KPRC because of Jennifer.  So it is no surprise that there are Internet chat room threads dedicated to her and she made this list.

Now there is an entire Twitter account devoted to the freeway reporter.
http://twitter.com/ratereyna

The account's bio reads "Dedicated to the traffic hottie Jennifer Reyna on Houston's KPRC Local 2." And it really is. The tweets list what she wears everyday and gives it a rating. This twitterer must be channeling the ghost of Mr. Blackwell.

Here are the account's latest tweets:
"Mad Plaid. Plaid brown top and brown pants. It's busy for a Monday, but still tight and hot. 8.0!"
"Morning sunshine. Bright yellow shirt, black dress and white belt = 6.5. Little better than average, but hey its casual Friday."

My prediction, Jennifer will be anchoring a KPRC newscast soon. Why? Remember the former KPRC morning traffic reporter that was very popular and had a lot of buzz? How can you forget her? She is the main anchor of KPRC - Dominique Sachse!

(Thanks Jason!)

Patrick Wayne Swayze's Houston roots

Last night I posted the sad news of actor Patrick Swayze's passing on my social networking accounts.

I actually met Mr. Swayze a few years ago when he was at KTRK 13 as a guest. I was his escort. His wife did not appear to trust me. Someone said I could watch the couple's stuff while he was on the air. Mrs. Swayze looked me up and down with great mistrust. I realized at that point my career plans to be a personal assistant to the stars was probably shattered.

You might not know that Swayze is from Houston. HISD tells me that Swayze was a graduate of Waltrip High School (1971). He also attended Oak Forest Elementary and Black Middle School.

Swayze's mother was a dance teacher in Houston.

Kanye and the MTV VMA ratings

I think Kanye West and MTV were both in on his interruption of Taylor Swift's award acceptance speech. It just makes sense to me. Look at the amount of publicity both Kanye and MTV are getting today. In the entertainment world any publicity is good publicity. Then he gets another round of news with an apology.

UPDATE
Kanye West Tells Jay Leno He'll Take Time Off After Taylor Swift Debacle at VMAs

- I couldn't believe how sloppy the TV production of the awards was.
- Russell Brand proved to be a terrible host again.
- The Jackson tribute was too long and only really paid off when Janet showed up.
- I was surprised MTV asked Joe Perry to play guitar with Katie Perry. In the old days, the show reached out to big time artists. I remember as a kid being bored because I thought some of the acts were for old people. Kids today don't have to worry about this anymore. This is actually a bad thing.
- The big build up of Jay Z arriving in a caravan of cars was pre-taped. How do I know? It was after 11pm Central and a clock on the street behind the cars said 10pm. That was Eastern time so if it was 11pm in Houston, it should have been 12am in New York.

Here is the ratings info for the Video Music Awards MTV sent out today:

The 2009 Video Music Awards was watched by over 26.9 million viewers on MTV, MTV2 and VH1 on Sunday night. This is up +17% from the 23 million who tuned in to MTV/MTV2 last year.
-- Airing on MTV, MTV2 and VH1, the 2009 VMAs averaged over 11 million total viewers. This is up +21% from MTV and MTV2's coverage in 2008 (9.1 million) and the largest VMA audience since 2002.
-- On MTV, The 2009 VMAs averaged just under 9 million total viewers, the largest audience since the 2004 awards. Up +6% year to year (8.97 million vs. 8.43 million).
-- On MTV2, The 2009 VMAs averaged 749,000 total viewers, up +11% year to year (749,000 vs. 674,000).
-- Among P12-34, The 2009 VMAs on MTV, MTV2 and VH1 averaged 7.2 million P12-34 viewers. This is up +16% from MTV and MTV2's coverage in 2008 (7.2 million vs. 6.2 million).
-- On MTV, The 2009 VMAs delivered a 7.5 P12-34 coverage rating, its strongest rating since the 2005 VMAs.
-- The 2009 VMAs is the #1 show on cable this year among P12-34.
-- On VH1, The 2009 VMAs averaged 1.3 million total viewers, improving its time period by +21%. Among P12-34, VH1 averaged a 1.03 rating, up 8% in its time period.

Watch what you comment on media stories

Houston news Web site articles have lots of mean spirited and snarky comments attached to them. Sometimes they are more interesting than the actual story. But before you decide to show off your wit anonymously on a news article...remember this.

Reader review of new Cowboys Stadium in DFW

Michael Penix sent out this email blast about his experience at the new Cowboys Stadium for the OU game and gave me permission to repost here:

Went to the OU/BYU game in Arlington at the new Cowboy's stadium...here's my two cents, notice there's more pros than cons. We sat in the 4th level, 4th row on the 35 yd. line.

Pros:
-The video screen was very impressive...kudos. It was overwhelming at first, but I got used to it. 40 million well spent...
-You're able to go up and down the escalators at will before the game, which was nice...Every stadium I've been to, you can only go 'up' before the game and 'down' after the game.
-All the seats were padded and had ample leg room/cup holders. I never felt cramped.

Cons:
-Bathrooms...my wife didn't stand in line...I stood in a line that was 20 yds. long. Awful (We did go at halftime)
-Instead of ramps to access the upper sections, they had stairs? Dude, stairs are cool for an NBA arena but NEVER at a football stadium. This isn't high school.
-All of those HD screens Jerry claims to have? Not one of them were showing the game when standing in the concessions line, instead they had the food/drink prices posted. Also, the Cowboys pro shop in the upper level was closed...I thought that was odd. I didn't go in the one downstairs.
-You can't walk around the perimeter of the stadium on the lower level once you're inside...that's because of the field level suites. How dare the peasants walk by and look inside!! It's definitely catered to the "upper class" fan.
-Sound System: Fail! I could hardly hear anything the referee said over the loud speaker. The PA announcer sounded muffled. OU might as well not even brought their band, you couldn't hear them in the 4th level.
-The parking situation was terrible. I parked in LOT 14...it was also the RV/Bus lot. The parking staff allowed the bigger vehicles to take up several parking spaces, while we parked in the grass. I had no idea we were going to need "Off! with Deet" to tailgate. $30 for a piece of lawn...

Overall Grade: C-

I've been to Reliant Stadium probably 15 times...and Houstonians should be proud. Plus, it cost less than half the price tag of Jerry's World. If he really did pay 1.4 billion, he got ripped off...
