J.R. Gonzales of the Houston Chronicle's Bayou City blog has scored big. He has obtained audio files from Marvin Zindler's old radio show on the now defunct KATL (sounds like it should be an Atlanta station).
Zindler, who was a consumer advocate icon at KTRK Channel 13 and the basis of the The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, was host of The Roving Mike radio program in 1951:
Combine Dragnet and Cops and you'll have The Roving Mike. For more than a year beginning in March 1951, Zindler prowled the back streets of Houston chasing crime scenes. Suspects, victims, witnesses and police officers all make up the cast of characters in this drama, though there's nothing scripted about it. READ AND HEAR MORE
It is great to hear Marvin again and this chunk of Houston's historic past. Gonzales does warn about some of the program's content so beware of that.
