KTRK abc13's Miya Shay and Democratic State Representative Gene Wu have a baby

Miya Shay
Miya Shay
Last March I blogged how Miya Shay, KTRK abc13 reporter, and Democratic State Representative Gene Wu were expecting a baby.

Today was baby day for the Shay/Wu family.

"We have a baby boy," exclaimed Shay on Facebook.

With a tweet of a footprint photo came the announcement of the future media/political star and the couple's first child.

Wu also tweeted the baby is seven pounds, 11 ounces.

Congrats to the new family!

Top Miya Shay confrontational TV moments

Miya Shay

Miya Shay has been hitting the Houston streets to bring viewers the news for 20 years at abc13 KTRK.

The EMMY winner's stories have taken her all over the world from China to Brazil, Korea and Japan.

And anyone who has watched Shay, knows she will do whatever it takes to get the story. She will not back down when it comes to getting an interview!

Case in point when a Meyerland homeowner recently made allegations that trespassers were living in her rental property. The story worked out for the homeowner by the way.

So, let's take a look at other moments Shay went after the story no matter what the obstacles were before her.

Back in 2022, Shay got the 'leaf blower treatment' when trying to interview a city official...

In 2020, when the world was closing, Shay was trying to get answers from inside a department store that was still open, until she was kicked out.  (RIP photographer Willie Dixon who was working with Shay that day)

There are more instance, and if you have a video source, share even more Shay moments here.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 24, 2013
KTRK abc13's Miya Shay& Gene Wu delivers baby

Miya Shay probably shocked some party guests at husband's Gene Wu's 35th birthday party last weekend. The KTRK abc13 reporter announced her pregnancy to the 25 or so party guests participating in a casual family style meal at China Garden in downtown Houston.

The news went on to dominate Facebook news feeds of Houston TV folks all weekend.

Shay and Wu are expecting their bundle of joy in late September. To make the announcement, they held up a custom onesie that said "Future Voter." Under that it said "Eligible September 2031" which would be the date the baby would be 18 years old.

For those of you who do not know, Wu is the State Representative for the Texas Legislature, House District 137 hence the voting reference.

Congrats to the couple.

This is the first time she's had a broken bone in her entire life.

Since she's busy healing, let's take a look at some of Shay's top confrontational TV moments.  In fact, she just celebrated 20 years with KTRK last year.

Get well soon!

Miya Shay

After a clever birth announcement earlier this year, KTRK abc13 reporter/anchor Miya Shay and husband, Texas State Representative, District 137, Gene Wu, have some baby news this evening.

As she posted, Shay and Wu welcomed Lyndon W. Wu on July 5th at 5:03pm. Lyndon came in at 6 lbs 9 oz.

Their first born, Winston, arrived in 2013.

That means we are just now anxiously awaiting morning anchor Samica Knight's baby news!

Miya Shay returns to abc13 Houston

Miya Shay

Miya Shay is back to her reporting duties for abc13 KTRK Houston after breaking three bones in her leg in late September 2023.

The station even brought back a former reporter to help staff up during the normal vacation-filled holidays.

Now Shay, who recently celebrated two decades with channel 13, can get back to doing what she does best!

So, what was lunch on Shay's first day back?  Wendy's chili.

It was a rough 2023 for Shay and other Houston TV anchors/reporters.  Her colleague Jacob Rascon had surgery. KPRC 2's Daniella Guzman broke her leg, and Lisa Hernandez is still out, from what I understand, after surgery for a meniscus root repair. Justin Stapleton battled pneumonia.

The national media blogs used me as the Houston TV injury report as conditions worsened.

Here is to a healthier 2024 for all involved!

Miya Shay celebrates 20 years with abc13 KTRK

Miya Shay

Miya Shay is celebrating 20 years with the abc13 KTRK Houston!

In two decades, Shay, who excels at the Houston government beat, has covered presidents and even reported from China three times for KTRK.

The Lone Star EMMY award-winning reporter came to Houston in December 2002 from WOOD TV8 Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Shay's previous two jobs would be future predictors of her Houston television career.  Now hear me out on this one.

While reporting for KAKE Wichita, Kansas, Shay met future channel 13 sports director Greg Bailey.

OK, this one is more of a stretch, but Shay got her first TV job at WAAY 31 News Huntsville, Alabama.  What is Huntsville, Alabama known for?  Well, as my wife knows, since she attended, Huntsville is the home of Space Camp.  Ok, I told you I was reaching for this, but obviously Houston is home of NASA's Johnson Space Center.

The Syracuse University grad worked at CNN Headline News out of college, and from what I understand, was friends with Newsy's Scott Withers.

Shay married a well-known Houstonian, too.  State Rep. Gene Wu and Shay have two sons.

KTRK 13 reporter Miya Shay's big swearing in bash

Shelby Hodge of Culturemap.com reports on the big bash for KTRK 13 reporter Miya Shay. This was a party for her recent swearing in to become a U.S. citizen:

The party hosts decided to make it an all-American themed party with a red, white and blue dress code and purely-American food. Clifford reports that she and Bray spent the day running all over town picking up James Coney Island hot dogs. Little Bigs sliders, fried chicken, pasta salads from Central Market, cupcakes, and apple and cherry pies. Guests washed the fare down with American beer, Coke in small bottles and wines from Oregon and California.

Joining the Citizenship Celebration were more than 60 well-wishers including Robert Sakowitz, Gordon Bethune with Jessica Rossman, City Councilwoman Melissa Noriega, Channel 13 meteorologist Casey Curry, Miya's squeeze Matt Young, State Rep. Carol Alvarado, Harris County Tax Assessor Collector Leo Vasquez with SuZanne Feather and Fulbright & Jaworski partner Neil Thomas. READ THE REST

Hodge reports that Shay immigrated to the US from China at the age of 8.

PICS: KTRK 13's Miya Shay & Gene Wu's engagement party

I told in April how KTRK 13's Miya Shay got engaged to Gene Wu. Wu is a prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and Democrat for Texas State Representative, District 137.

Friday night, the private wine cellar of Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House was buzzing with a good bit of the Houston media crowd to celebrate the couple's engagement.

KHOU 11’s Courtney Zubowski (a bridesmaid) was there with her boyfriend Dr. Eric Haas. Channel 13’s Tom Koch and wife Brenda, Channel 2’s Mary Benton, Channel 8’s Ernie Manouse, Jackson Hearn, the reality family of Dr. Franklin and Erica Rose, Galveston Daily News’ T.J. Aulds and Culturemap’s Clifford Pugh rounded out the media heavy crowd.

About 80 people showed up in total. The whole affair was orchestrated by bridesmaid Kim Padgett and co-hosted by several of Miya and Gene’s friends.

Seems like the media wedding season is in full swing!

Guests enjoyed many generous moments at the Second Annual "A Time to Care" Luncheon benefitting The Rose at the Junior League of Houston on Tuesday afternoon. Co-chairs Jessica Rossman and Michelle Meissner were tickled pink when this year's Master of Ceremonies Ernie Manouse of PBS, along with more than 260 guests, helped raise more than $87,000 for advanced breast cancer screening, diagnostic services and access to treatment to more than 35,000 insured and uninsured women annually.

Deborah Duncan of KHOU's Great Day Houston set the mood as she welcomed guests to the Second Annual "A Time to Care" Luncheon. Guests enjoyed a three course meal and refreshments while Ernie Manouse and luncheon speaker Dan Moore, CEO of Cyberonics, sat down for an open and engaging conversation about the importance of taking the time to care for the ones who matter the most, whether they be friends, family or employees.

Texas State Representative Gene Wu presented The Rose with a resolution that recognizes the nonprofit breast cancer organization and its second annual fundraising luncheon. The resolution states that those associated with the event should be extended best wishes for continued success.

For a sweet take-home treat, Mister French's Gourmet Bakery provided each guest with its sugar vanilla cookies. The cookies were meticulously hand decorated to the smallest detail and designed specifically for the event by Scott French himself. For every table, centerpieces included of assorted pink flowers in a glass vase were underwritten by Kroger. To thank all the heart-warming guests, bright fuchsia pink and green pashminas covered the Junior League of Houston Tea Room's chairs and were generously underwritten by Randall's.

Time flies with United Airlines as the raffle drawing for round trip business class tickets (anywhere in the U.S. Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, Central America or Europe) raised $20,000. The raffle winner of the United Airline tickets was Amy Carr. Guests also opened up their big hearts and purchased raffle tickets for five fabulous packages that included spa treatments, dining, entertainment, getaways and more.

Those taking time to care included: The Rose Co-Founder and CEO Dorothy Gibbons, board members Myrleen Knott, Chair, Donna Mittendorf, Vice Chair, Tom Watson, Eileen Campbell along with guests Lara Bell, Bruce Padilla, Diane Caplan, KTRK's Sonia Azad and Miya Shay, Laurette Veres, Kim Padgett, Shelley Ludwick, Josh Espinedo, Kari Gonzales, Edward Sanchez, Peter Remington, Gracie Cavnar, Leisa Holland Nelson, Dana Kervin Clark, Beth Wilson, Texas State Representative Gene Wu, Ruchi Mukerjee, Kay King, Tina Governale, and Helen Perry.

Melanie Lawson and Miya Shay earn Disney gold

Melanie Lawson celebrated 40 years with abc13 KTRK Houston in September and reporter Miya Shay celebrated 20 in December!

Today the channel 13 duo were given the "gold" as their service awards were handed out by news director Keaton Fuchs.

Since abc13 is owned by Disney, looks like Lawson received a Donald Duck award and Shay a Simba from the "Lion King."

In other KTRK news, Shay reveals in the post that NPPA member Francisco Barragan has been named chief photogapher for the station. Barragan replaces Anthony Reed who left for the operations manager role for sister-station ABC11 WTVD Raleigh-Durham, NC back in late 2022.

Casey Curry back at abc13 KTRK

Casey Curry returned to the KTRK abc13 11am news

UPDATE JANUARY 28, 2016

 photo Currybackontv_zps6s8ff4il.jpg

Casey Curry returned to the 11am news today with a wrapped arm.

Anchor Melanie Lawson introduced her with something to the effect, "Here are some words I haven't said in awhile, here's meteorologist Casey Curry."

It has been a long time. Curry was injured during the 11am news back on September 15, 2015 and broke her wrist.

***ORIGINAL POST***

The most anticipated return in my blogging history - we now have photographic evidence KTRK abc13 meteorologist Casey Curry is back at the station

Casey Curry
Casey Curry
Casey Curry is back at KTRK abc13, but was not on the 11am news Tuesday morning.

It just so happens that I was answering reader emails last night about KTRK abc13 meteorologist Casey Curry's whereabouts.

But really, what makes last night different from any other?  I get so many inquiries about Curry's return that I was considering hiring an assistant to field them for me.

Well, forget all of that because CASEY CURRY HAS BEEN PHOTOGRAPHED INSIDE THE KTRK ABC13 STUDIO!!!!!

Miya Shay tweeted this photo of her with Curry and anchor Samica Knight.

"BreakingNews! Guess who's back at #abc13," Shay asked in a tweet. "@CaseyWeather! We missed her! #welcomeback"

I'm sure they have missed her. It's been four months since Curry fell on the day old KTRK set live during the 11am newscast, breaking her wrist. Afterwards she debuted a pink camo cast.

Curry fans were writing in worrying she was never coming back. I predict a Curry return with sunshine.

UPDATE
In Tracy Clemons' tweet, you can see that Curry still has a wrapped arm.

Longtime abc13 KTRK reporter Kevin Quinn signs off, announces new roles as full-time spokesperson with the Constable for Precinct 1 in Harris County, Alan Rosen and media liaison for Houston Crime Stoppers

Jennifer Rosen, Harris County Pct. 1 Constable Alan Rosen, Kevin and Elizabeth Quinn

Back in March when he announced his resignation, lots of my readers were shocked reporter Kevin Quinn was leaving the abc13 KTRK airwaves after covering the news at the Disney–ABC Television Group owned stations since 2003.

Last Friday was his official last day.

And the mikemcguff.com roving camera sneaked into his Quinn's goodbye party Saturday night which was thrown by colleague Miya Shay at Union Kitchen on Washington Avenue.

"I have accepted a full-time position as a spokesperson with the Constable for Precinct 1 in Harris County, Alan Rosen," Kevin announced. "I’ll also be working some as a media liaison for Houston Crime Stoppers. I’m excited about these new challenges and I look forward to what’s to come."

As you will see in the photos, Constable Rosen was at the party and spoke very highly of Quinn.

Clearly Quinn will be missed in the TV newsrooms. Lots of people from all sides of the camera and from various stations showed up to say goodbye.

But don't worry, he'll still be dealing with the media, just in a new role!
