103.7 KIOL will become Jack FM

Stepping out of his usual sports beat, David Barron reports that Rock 103.7 will soon be no more. That station brings Houston Jack FM:

The eclectic, iPod shuffle-like music format known as Jack FM makes its Houston debut at 10:37 a.m. Friday at 103.7 FM.

The Cumulus Media station, now known as KIOL or Rock 103.7 FM, will be reformatted as KHJK, said Pat Fant, Cumulus' Houston market manager.

Houston will be the seventh market in Texas and the fifth top 10 market in the country to add Jack FM, which formats about a thousand songs by 500 artists in 18 genres of music dating from the late 1960s through today.

That format runs without DJs by the way. I have listened to JACK FM Dallas and LA. I liked what I heard on both. The Los Angeles station leans a little more rock from what I heard. Usually CBS is behind the format in the United States, not Cumulus. I'm not sure what to expect. The one thing I do know is the music will be all over the place.

I was upbeat about KIOL before it came on the air. Then I heard it. I was hoping for a heavier leaning (possibly active rock) station that attempted to bring back KLOL from the early 90s. Instead it seemed to mimic the lethargic version Clear Channel broadcasted.

BTW, Houston has had PAT FM on 106.9 HD2 for a while. That's a 90's mix.

If you like the Houston Texans, cheerleaders, high school football and the Internet, you won't be disappointed.

Besides I used to only write scripts for TV anchor and reporters, now I can add cheerleaders to the resume.

Star Wars at Hobby Airport in Houston

I must admit, I did go a little crazy over the Star Wars characters and lightsaber that landed at Hobby Airport in Houston Tuesday. Just a little. My pal Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers were there after all. R2-D2 and Boba Fett were there too with a few others.

I went out there for work with my Nikon D50 and Flip Video camera. Here is the video I made. It is much better than my BarCamp Houston 2 video from earlier this week.

CLICK HERE TO READ THE STORY AND SEE EVEN MORE PICTURES

Check out my Flickr photos of the event.

Michael Garfield, The High Tech Texan, happened to land at Hobby while all of this was going on. He said he walked up to me and I was in some kind of trance and ignored him! Who can blame me. I was trying to take still pictures and video a the same time while avoiding all of the TV and newspaper photographers, radio reporters, ABC News crew as well as all of the Southwest Airlines employees and passengers. Talk about one man band (aka the future of web journalism).

Finding out about Iraq from someone who was there

When the Office of Assistant Secretary of Defense emailed me about the Why We Serve program, I knew I wanted to speak directly with someone who has actually served. Enter Gunnery Sergeant Jeremy M. de Vries who is a twelve year veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

No matter your political beliefs, I hope this interview will help enhance your understanding on what's going on in Iraq.

Mike McGuff: I noticed you were born in Canada. Some might find it surprising you joined the United States Marine Corps. Why did you want to serve?

Jeremy M. de Vries: My family moved to the United States in 1991. I spent the last three years of school in Georgia and Tennessee and loved the American way of life. I loved the people, the culture, the patriotism of the average American. It was something I wanted to be a part of. I considered the United States my adoptive country right away and decided that the opportinity
to serve a country that I loved refected how I felt about America.

Mike McGuff: You returned from duty in Iraq last year. Tell me from the perspective of serving there, what are Americans back home not understanding or getting the full picture of when it concerns the war in your opinion?

Jeremy M. de Vries: I served on a military transition team (MiTT). A MiTT is a small team, 11 personnel in my case, who's job it is to train Iraqi forces in administrative procedures, weapons, and combat tactics. We were very limited as far as an active combat role went. I thought the MiTT team played a very important role in Iraq, one that would provide the Iraqi Army (IA) the the training and equipment necessary to take control of their areas of responsibility vice having the US military secure the region for them. It seemed after coming
back home, and especially during my speaking engagements, that a lot of Americans
really had no information about MiTT teams, or other ways the US served Iraq (civil affairs groups being another example). I think the assumption amoung many Americans is that the troops in Iraq are all out on the streets everyday kicking in doors and conducting combat operations.

Mike McGuff: Is there anyway those left back home can fully understand the full issues without being there ourselves?

Jeremy M. de Vries: I think it's difficult to explain the issues to the masses in one fell swoop. I think that the 'Why We Serve' program is a good way to attempt to reach as many people as possible so that individual service members can try to explain, in our own opinions, the issues. I think a lot of understanding also needs to come from research on the issues by the average
American. There is media and information out there to help explain these issues that the people want to be better informed on.

Mike McGuff: You served as a Senior Enlisted Advisor and Logistics Chief, vehicle driver, gunner, and commander, as well as an improvised explosive device reaction trainer. The media has done numerous stories on these very dangerous jobs. Tell me what went through your mind as you left each day to start a patrol.

Jeremy M. de Vries: I'll be the first to admit that i'd be nervous going out on patrols. You'd try and use up some of that nervous energy getting your equipment ready (whether it was the gun, vehicle, or navigation systems). You'd check and double-check your personal gear to ensure you had everything you needed for the day. We'd have briefs before every convoy to reenforce the convoy tactics we'd been taught and to ensure everyone was well versed in what to do if something bad happened. We'd also spend time with each other before departing, just joking around with each other, knowing that might be the last conversation you would have with your friend and collegue. Once we mounted up on our vehicles though, regardless of position in the vehicle that day, I was totally focused on the task at hand, and the specific job I was assigned to.

If attacked you do what you've been taught to do. Otherwise you keep focused on the mission and before you know it you're where you needed to be. Once we'd get back to our main camp, it was always a huge relief.

Mike McGuff: We have heard some amazing stories from our military. What are some stories from your personal experiences that stand out in your mind while on duty in Iraq?

Jeremy M. de Vries: It was amazing to me how close our team was. It was like serving with 10 of your best friends or serving with 10 brothers. Just the bond we had with each other was so remarkable. Forward Operating Base Duke (FOB Duke) an Army base where we were based out of (between Najaf and Karbala) had a camp run/race in memory of the soldiers and Marines that were killed in action while serving at FOB Duke. Civilian contract employees from KBR and Blackwater, British contractors from Aegis, and people from all four services took part in this run. It was really touching to me that so many people wanted to take part of something in remembrence of our brethren.

Additionaly, seeing the rise in proficiency of the IA, from a ragtag group of people, and the change of them into soldiers meant a lot to me. It meant that the days we'd spend, in 130 degree weather, thru sandstorms and rough living, and the time we'd spend away from our families, was productive and served a notable purpose.

Mike McGuff: What was it like helping the Iraqis form an army? Can they succeed in your opinion?

There were a lot of issues that made training the Iraqis difficult. First, we had the language barrier. Without the help of some outstanding Iraqi locals, our translators, our job would be impossible. We also had to deal with cultural differences. Muslims celebrate the religious holiday Ramadan, by fasting - to include water - thru daylight hours. It is extremely difficult to try and convince people to train in the middle of summer, after they haven't had any water to drink or food to eat for extended periods of time. That being said, I think it was worth it to me. To provide the means necessary to protect their freedom, by having an effective military to defend it, was very important to me. I love the study of history, and understand that without the French assisting our military in the Revolutionary War, that the US might not have been able and probably would not have been able to win the freedoms that we have today.

Jeremy M. de Vries: I think the Iraqi Army can definately suceed in the effort to maintain freedom in Iraq. I felt that the locals started to feel confidence in their soldiers. I think that confidence will help the people then feel more comfortable approaching the troops about insurgent activity.

Mike McGuff: While travelling for the Why We Serve program, what have you learned? What are the top questions you've been receiving from the public?

Jeremy M. de Vries: I think the main thing that the Why We Serve program has not really taught me, but reenforced in me, is that the American people are why I serve. A few of my engagements have been to kids groups ranging from youngsters in middle schools, to older teenagers. Having the chance to explain to them why I serve, and to try to instill in them the importance of respect for others, doing the right thing, and to answer questions that they might not have the opportunity to get answers to elsewhere, is very important to me.

Most of the more frequently asked questions during all my speaking engagements, have been focused around how long I expect the US military to remain in Iraq and what the US military has been accomplishing in Iraq. I try to answer any questions to the best of my ability but have to explain that some questions are really policy based and that sometimes, i may not have an answer to give them if i'm not knowledgeable enough about the specifics to provide an accurate answer.

Mike McGuff: Anything else you want to add?

Jeremy M. de Vries: I like to include a quote in my speeches that is important to me and I hope helps the listeners of my speeches understand overall where i'm coming from in regards to why I serve. "Such a glorious cause, had never before rallied the attention of mankind. Oppressors and oppressed would recieve a powerful lesson; the great work would be accomplished or the rights of humanity would fall beneath its ruin." Marquis de Lafeyette, a French noble and Revolutionary war hero speaking about the fight for freedom in the War of
Independence.

José Griñan's future at Fox 26 KRIV

Ken Hoffman, wearing his Houston Chronicle hat, found out the plans at Fox 26 KRIV:

Forget those rumblings that Fox 26 morning news anchor José Griñan is leaving the station.

"Things have changed. I have been asked to stay. So I'll be here for another two years. I did have intentions of moving on. Now that's pushed back for the time being,'' Griñan said.

VIDEO: BarCamp Houston 2 coverage

Better late than never. Here is my coverage of Barcamp Houston 2. Mine took a little longer
because I pulled out the Flip Video camera and decided to cut some mikemcguff.com blog web TV coverage.

Those included in the video are:
I got a lot out of BarCamp Houston, especially in the afternoon sessions. My only wishes would be keeping sessions on time and a microphone for the speakers. Other things that were interesting, Wowio and Spresent, plus Dwight Silverman's Twitter stream coverage.

I used the Flip Video camera to shoot this. I'm sure my TV photographer friends would be wincing in pain from watching this. But when you are shooting with a camera that looks like an iPod, there are some concessions to make with quality. I learned a lot about shooting with the Flip Video. Number 1, pay attention to holding it straight on your subject, but when you are asking questions and concentrating on that, you forget. This video could be the argument against one man bands, but if I had an actual camera it would have turned out very different. Watch out for my Flip Video review soon.

Disney coming to Houston or Katy?

I keep hearing this rumor that Disney is buying land in the Katy area or at west Houston. I have seen it on the Internet, heard about in person and received an email about it.

What is the deal? Why would Disney do this? The only reason I can come up with is they would want a theme park or something centrally located since the other parks are on the coasts. The land out there is growing in value, but it certainly isn't too expensive for Disney. We are in a good location for folks from Mexico, Central and Latin America to show up. The Galleria takes advantage of that fact.

But seriously, I don't see it happening.

In full disclosure, I work for Disney and have heard nothing about this nor would I probably ever know anything ahead of an official announcement. The rumor might have come from this.

Houston reality TV show?

Shelby Hodge of the Chron is reporting on a possible reality TV show for Erica Rose (The Bachelor) and family:

The professional video cameras, five in all, rolled in the early evening heat while Cindi and Dr. Franklin Rose and friends paraded in high form, particularly tiara-clad Erica Rose, who continues to ride the glide from last fall's The Bachelor series.

[snip]

The film crew, with sound booms hovering, were from Pink Sneakers Productions, known for a stable of reality series including VH1's Hogan Knows Best.

The Roses, never shy of publicity, were anxious to put Houston's best face forward for Pink Sneakers' potential pilot for a hush-hush, Houston-based reality series. Might the subjects be the Rose family and might the story include a little nip and tuck?

(Word is that big bucks and serious contracts are in the offing for the entire Rose family, including son Ben, who came in from law school at Emory University to be part of the action.)

The only Erica Rose story I have is that I traded a dollar bill with her at my work Coke machine. The machine wouldn't accept her dollar, I gave her one that worked. She seemed nice to me.

Van Halen must play Texas

Lisa Carrillo commented on one of my previous Van Halen tour posts. That was the one where I mentioned Diamond David Lee Roth is back in the band but they are not coming to Texas...at all. At least not at this writing.

Her comment chronicles an email exchange she had with the Van-Halen.com webmaster:

ME:
The tour doesn't include Houston???? I've seen you three times here before. My sons, aged 16, 15, and 13, are now fans and couldn't wait to finally see Van Halen in person. I'm crushed and so are they.

What's the deal???

Lisa Carrillo
Loyal fan since 1975

THEM:
Hi Lisa, and thanks for your email!

Right now, these are the only VH dates we have. If and when more are
scheduled, we will post them to the tour page at
http://www.van-halen.com/tour.html so keep checking back.

Brad
Webmaster
http://www.van-halen.com

ME:
Just a thought...CANADA before Texas? C'mon. You've got two venues in much smaller states when you've got the choice of Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio? I'll keep checking back, but seriously...ya need to reconsider!

I couldn't agree more. Those Van Halen bastards brothers need to stop erasing Michael Anthony from the band's past and start playing at least a Houston and Dallas show. They should also play San Antonio, Austin and El Paso too. Look into my eyes, Eddie Van Halen, you WILL PLAY HOUSTON.

Texas Highway Project Threatens a Cluster of Branch Davidians in Waco

Let's look at some news from my old stopping grounds in Waco. Don't think the Branch Davidians or David Koresh are out of the spotlight yet. ABC News' Nightline was recently there with this story:

Pace's latest cause may just attract some anti-government types to Mount Carmel. The state of Texas is considering building a north-south superhighway through the Waco area, part of a massive statewide project known as the Trans-Texas Corridor.

One county map, drawn up merely for "guesstimating costs," the county insists, shows the highway going straight through Mount Carmel.

"I'm getting very militant," said Pace. "Because I want to vindicate these people's names -- I don't want them to be forgotten and paved over. They want to put a road through here and just destroy this whole place, basically pave it over. I think that would be a sacrilege."

Will he fight the highway project?

"Yes, we're going to fight it," he said. "They'll have to carry my cold body off this place. Or bury me here with the rest of them."

Tough, provocative words from a man occupying the site of one more violent chapters in American history. But Pace said he's not talking about taking up arms.

The state of Texas says that while Mount Carmel lies within a large swath of land being studied for the project, no decisions have been made about the actual route. The building of the highway, if it ever happens, would be many years away.

I have been to those grounds several times and it does have an eerie feeling as you might imagine. The Davidians will still tell you about Koresh's predictions and how a disc of his writings made it out of the blaze with one of the surviving members. I believe you can buy them. Just don't show up at night or you could get shot at. Years ago my wife learned that the hard way as a young Baylor student.

I am sure the Waco area would love a highway to cover that place. If you go out Loop 340 to get there, no one will tell you where it is, so don't bother stopping for directions. They like to play coy out there when it comes to the Davidians.

Blogger video upload and the ZunePhone

Yesterday a video upload button appeared on the Blogger tool. Does this having something to do with its birthday? Google says you can upload videos and create a video podcast just like how you upload images. Now the question is, should I terrorize you with a video podcast? And should I start referring to it as the mikemcguff.com vlog? Will that make me more hip?

And I usually don't get involved in the Apple vs Microsoft debate. I've owned both and loved them for different reasons as if they were my own children. But, you have to go check out the ZunePhone video Jay Lee put up. Priceless.

VIDEO: Radio Hosts Go Ballistic in Broadcast Studio Fight

Murdock sent me a video that could serve as a template for the four Houston sports radio stations if they want to get a lot of attention quickly. Essentially the hosts need to duke it out on the air and cuss like a trucker who's mad the last spot at the Flying J was just taken.

For those of you not in town, yes, we have four sports talk radio stations here now.

TV station KLFY has the story:

Hundreds of listeners who tuned into radio station KXKC Thursday morning heard what sounded like a nasty confrontation between morning show hosts Scott Daniels and DeLannie Langlinais.

The stations program director, Casey Carter, even sent out an open letter to listeners apologizing for the incident.

We did ask the radio station if this morning's show was all done as part of any kind of stunt, but we're still waiting on an answer to the question.

The cheerleader teaser

As I first mentioned on Facebook yesterday, why were there three Houston Texans cheerleaders at my desk yesterday?

If you want to know the answer, stay tuned.

Maybe the better question, why aren't they there normally?

Three monitors, take that

In response to my post on the fact that I got dual monitors at work (which makes life a lot easier I have realized), MikeMcGuff.com Blog reader Bob Martin (aka The Accountant to the Stars) sent this image in with the following message:

3 monitors are better than 2. Bet you are jealous.

He is right, I am totally jealous! Well, now I have something to aspire to.

Meeting the dudes behind Startup Houston

I caught up with Kurt Stoll and Josh Tabin, the guys behind Startup Houston, and they told me why Houston is a great place for tech startups.

Kurt Stoll: It all starts with creating a startup-friendly environment where people with ideas have easy access to like-minded peers, as well as capital, technical, and business resources that can help them to take their ideas or their business to the next level. Oh yeah, there also needs to be a central information source where all of these groups can understand how to connect to each other and see their work promoted, and that's where Startup Houston comes in. In the past I had heard that Houston was not a "startup town," but I asked the question "Is Houston not a startup town only because of perception, or are there things going on that people just don't know about?" It turns out that the latter is true. One of the reasons that Startup Houston was founded was to help break this chicken and egg cycle for Houston startups and by using our platform to promote startups, putting together events such as Open Coffee Club Houston, and participating in other events and meetup groups such as BarCamp, Refresh Houston, Startup Weekend, and the Houston Technology Center's Emerging Technology Council, we are working with others in the Houston technical and business communities to help foster that very environment.

Mike McGuff: Why do you believe in this?

Josh Tabin: For me personally, I have always been passionate about developing people and ideas. Houston is well known for its entrepreneurial spirit. Every day I run into someone with a great business idea that is not sure how to make something of it. There is nothing more painful to me than wasted potential.

Another presidential candidate?

Just when I thought we had heard about all of the many, many presidential candidates, I get an email from one I have never heard of:

HOST: Heidi Thiess
Location: VFW Post #8790
1560 Foley, Houston, TX 77055 US
When: Tuesday, August 28, 7:00PM
Phone: 832-932-1401
We are very proud to introduce Houstonians to Congressman Duncan Hunter - a Presidential candidate of strong and principled leadership.

Duncan Hunter is unique in the '08 Presidential race - a true Reagan conservative. A former combat veteran in Vietnam, Duncan Hunter has devoted his 26 years in Congress to ensuring that our military is second to none, securing our nation's borders, and protecting American workers from unfair competition. Hunter's other legislative priorities include retaining and increasing jobs across this nation, providing tax relief to hard-working families, keeping our promises to America's veterans, protecting Social Security for present and future generations, and promoting strong family values.

Maybe you heard about him first here folks.

How many people are going run? How many more are going to just talk about running? How will we keep all of them straight? When will the debate stage be whittled down? Will Al Gore run? Will the ticket be Hillary Clinton/Barack Obama and Rudy Giuliani/Fred Thompson? Or will Thompson never actually run and go back to Law and Order? Will I stop asking questions?

Sports columnist John Lopez leaves the Houston Chronicle

Looks like Lopez isn't quite at large at the Houston Chronicle anymore. BlogHOUSTON has the details of the columnist's departure from Houston's daily. Lopez will still have a show on 790 The Sports Animal KBME.

I guess HouStoned was right.

Sorry, I don't have any 1560 The Game KGOW news today.

TV web site news

Looks like a lot of big TV companies are launching high school sports web sites. Hearst-Argyle launched HighSchoolPlaybook and Belo hit the net with HSgametime. I know of another one that launched today that I personally worked on. This might not have the corporate infrastructure of the others, but at KTRK and abc13.com we built our own local Houston high school sports site. Stop by and check it out. We have tons of video to watch.

In other news, Mediaweek reports that Fox Interactive Media will make available its MyFox Web platform to 160 Fox affiliates, potentially expanding Fox’s branded Internet presence into nearly every TV market. I once talked to some Fox station executives about this platform. They asked me what I thought and I said I wasn't a fan. They didn't seem shocked.

The Westheimer Block Party

A party invite hit my in-box that I will share with you:

Westheimer Block Party October 13th

usual array of undergrounds artists, 50+ bands, performers of all
strains, and lizard-toting revelers.

Nonetheless, this fall’s event will host a slew of new elements with
‘Abstraction’ Art Show featured in the newly renovated Avant Garden
(formerly Helios), the inclusion of additional adjacent properties, and
*Houston’s 1^st Solar Powered stage* at Number’s courtesy of Armadillo
Solar. (What can we say? After trashing the city for nearly 5 years with
the rubbish of tabloid print, we feel like we should make a token
gesture.) *The Block Party will be home to 6 stages of live music at
Number’s, **Avant** **Garden**, La Strada, and Mangos Cantina. *As usual
Wynona Rider will be making a guest appearance. Interspersed between all

twice being they are just awesome. Complete stage guide available by
September 15^th .

REVIEW: Easily create photo and video montages

Go read my review of OneTrueMedia. It's a web site that can make anyone look like a multimedia genius in minutes.

In fact, it might make your friends and family angry trying to figure out how you created your masterpiece.

Once finished, you can throw your project on a DVD, blog, social network and now TiVo.

1560 The Game: KGOW's first day review

I emailed Ken Hoffman after his first day on the air at 1560 The Game KGOW and in classic Hoffman form he replied with this:

"I think the owners of Earplugs Inc. owe me a finder's fee for what I
did on radio today."

His was the only show I listened to Monday. He did a good job. I hear it was rougher for the Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice though. People told me he was on fire during the Bud Selig interview, but by himself you got a lot of "uhhs" and pauses. Chalk it up to first day jitters I guess.

Justice's Chron colleague David Barron reported on Justice's problems and more on his blog. According to Barron, the station's transmitter isn't doing so well, so much of Houston probably couldn't receive the signal. I picked it up pretty well.

Over here you can spy on what people who work in Houston radio and radio geeks are saying about 1560 The Game.

I guess the 1560 KILE days are finally over and we can just concentrate on 1560 The Game KGOW.

HouStoned has noticed that most of the Houston Chronicle's sports columnist have radio shows or appear on the radio now. According to the Press' blog, Jeff Cohen, the Houston Chronicle's editor, is getting mad about some of his writers pimping products on the air. I always wondered about this when Deborah Duncan had a show on KTRH and read commercials, but KHOU must have not cared.

Why evil robots want to kill you and other tech stories

Small businesses can find blogging useful, but it takes some elbow grease.

You supposedly can become addicted to Wikipedia's discussion forums. Then go look at which corporations are editing entries. I don't read the site for the articles, I just look at the pictures.

Music fans should really have their phone on them at all times. I did and got a picture of my wife with Duff McKagan. It's different than the 70s when blind children whistled and became phreakers named Joybubbles.

Hit 88 mph and go back in time with a Humble, TX dude who is trying to revive the DeLorean.

Supposedly the city of Houston's deal with Earthlink could be in jeopardy. I don't know much about this because I wasn't one of the chosen few to blog about this when it was announced. That's fine, I've been trying to wire the Internet into my brain with a pair of rusted pliers and an old TV antenna set. Wish me luck!

Is the Motorola/Verizon V325i making us remember terrible days in American history while we text?

Remember, Barcamp Houston is this Saturday. I've been spending the whole week trying to figure out the perfect costume to wear.

Are these Houston Texans jokes funny?

A very loyal mikemcguff.com blog reader submitted these Houston Texans jokes to me today. He/she would like to remain anonymous.

It's now your turn to determine if they are funny:

Mario Williams is having a fan meet and greet at the Kroger on Westpark. That way he can get a few sacks. (insert rim shot)

The city of Houston is considering a plastic bag ban. Randall’s is rolling out a new logo when that happens, “Fewer sacks than Mario”.

Behold the new USB refrigerator

The best intern a web department could ever wish for bought me this parting present. It's a USB fridge:

Time to keep those Diet Dr. Peppers frosty. Thanks Krystal!

KGOW 1560 The Game is alive

Why do I feel like a proud father watching my son go off to his first day of kindergarten for some guy talk? Really I don't know because none of it has anything to do with me.

If you've been reading this blog for any amount of time, you know 1560 KILE is going on the air today as 1560 KGOW The Game. This is the John Granato, Richard Justice, Ken Hoffman and Sean Pendergast station we've heard about for a while. Is it guy talk? Is it sports? Maybe both.

The web site is alive at 1560thegame.com.

This weekend, the station was playing music every time I tuned in. Maybe it was sports themed music? I'll be honest, it is not the easiest station to pick up. I have a Sharper Image radio I listen to. It picks up almost everything except for 103.7 KIOL and 106.9 The Point KHPT. 1560 sort of comes in. Maybe that will get better.

Meanwhile, the other guy station MOJO 950 KPRC is already on the air or is it? Seems like the station has not done a good job of killing off the Talk Radio 950 KPRC imaging. During Matt Drudge Sunday night, I heard promos for both Sam Malone and Sean Hannity during the music tosses to the ad breaks. Neither guy is on that station anymore. I'm surprised Clear Channel is that sloppy.

Let the Sports/Guy radio station war begin in Houston. I think I hear Jim Rome about to parachute into Houston to defend Sports Radio 610 KILT's honor.

(blogHOUSTON is also talking about this)

VIDEOS: Chuck E. Cheese, Popeye vs. anime, Putin's generation

I loved going to Showbiz Pizza and then Chuck E. Cheese as a kid. In fact the location I frequented in West U is still there. The one near Fondren Southwest, not so much. Some, who have more money to spend than I, have taken the cherished robot performers and have reprogrammed them to perform new songs. Check out Fergie's London Bridges.

What would happen if Popeye found himself in an anime universe? Well, he'd encounter more folks with green hair. Based on this cartoon, it appears he would also go insane.

In The Putin Generation, The New York Times looks at a new Russian youth movement called Nashi. Guess what? America is not their favorite country either.

Houston high school football and sports

I have an explanation on The Consumer Blog as to why I haven't been posting lately. It's because I have been building the station's new Houston high school sports news and score section.

I grew up in Houston and never fully appreciated how many teams we have around here. Go Lamar Redskins! That was my school by the way.

Let me know what you like, don't like, if you find any big errors...etc. Email me

If you have Facebook, go become friends with us!

VIDEO: Houston Rockets players try country karaoke

Hopefully the new team will be better on the court of the Toyota Center than they were on stage with a microphone:

Saturday night in May, Houston Rockets Forward and Duke Alum, Shane Battier sings at Christian's Tailgate, in Midtown Houston. Fresh of the Utah Jazz game 7 defeat the prior week, Battier pours his heart into this song! By the way, who knew that Shane likes Country Music?

1560 KGOW The Game getting ready

It looks like one of the most talked about stations is about to hit the air Monday. 1560 KGOW The Game is almost here and David "The rich and famous Von" Barron has more:

Topper said KGOW will use its 50,000-watt tower alignment for daytime and has obtained approval to use a 100-watt signal that will cover a portion of southwest Houston. That night signal will be in use for six months as the station awaits developments on its plans to build a 1,000-watt tower and on its FCC application for a 19,000-watt nighttime signal, Topper said.

Until the signal improves, Topper said KGOW will be promoting its Web site, 1560thegame.com, for evening use in areas where the over-the-air signal is unreachable after dark. As for opening-week programming, rumor has it that Richard Justice has lined up baseball commissioner Bud Selig for his first show Monday. Asked about his plans, Ken Hoffman said he will be joined by his Uncle Sol, which, knowing Hoffman, may or may not have been a serious response to the question. We also will have some thoughts over the weekend from the station's afternoon hosts, Sean Pendergast and John Harris, on the Four DVRs, No Waiting Web blog at chron.com.

Where is Mike McGuff?

Don't worry everything is fine. I have not been posting due to one of the following reasons:

a) I am recording a rap album (LISTEN HERE)

b) Finishing a big project at work

c) I locked myself in a basement in anticipation for Erin and Dean

Video brought Rod Ryan off 94.5 The Buzz a life change

94.5 The Buzz in Houston was supposedly the first station to use a technology that allowed you to stream a live video signal from the radio studio to web users. That system is called iSEEradio, a subsidiary of WhiteBlox. Supposedly the video signal had unintended consequences for morning man Rod Ryan:

At KTBZ in Houston, the first Clear Channel station to use iSEEradio, Rod Ryan does the morning show. Fenton recalls that “when they began streaming his show, he was heavyset and didn’t pay a lot of attention to style. But he was getting so much recognition that when people would see him in person, they would start commenting on his shirt or whatever he was wearing in the studio.

“Pretty soon, Rod started losing weight and getting in shape. It was like being on TV every day. It gave him more social status, a visual presence. In fact, some of the DJs have gained more confidence from it.”

KHCW's Casanova Nurse tells us about his cool name

About a month ago, I featured KHCW's Casanova Nurse as the best on air name of the week. Casanova wrote in to the Mike McGuff Blog with the origins of his popular name:

I've been checking into your blog every few days since I discovered it about four months ago. What a pleasant surprise to read a posting about me, a relative newbie to the Houston scene.

Since I entered the TV weather business four years ago, the number-one question I get from folks is about the origin of my name. Most believe it is a stage name, but I can honestly say Casanova Nurse is my true birth name. My father, a native of the Caribbean islands, named me after a family he knew in Cuba before coming to the U.S. many years ago. (If my mom had her way, I would be named Keith, which might not work well in the weather office, having two Keiths around!)

Good point!

Facebook lawsuit, Web radio, Second Life, space hotel, Halo 3 and more

What's behind the Facebook lawsuit?

Web radios that can use a Wi-Fi network to pull in any of 10,000 Internet radio stations from all over the world, without a single pop of static.

The New York Times covers Second Life.

Galactic Suite, the first hotel planned in space, expects to open for business in 2012 and would allow guests to travel around the world in 80 minutes.

Is this really a personal cell phone blocker?

Venture capitalist, Guy Kawasaki, says it is 'easy' to become an Internet millionaire, as long as you have a good idea. You don’t even have to work hard: a couple of hours a day in your underwear should be enough.

Due on store shelves Sept. 25, Halo 3 is the follow-up to an enormously successful game franchise.

Game makers are developing more games for smart phones.

Ways to keep your IT staff helping you.

My August visit to the downtown Houston cathedral

Lots of people have looked at the pictures and the Soundslide I did at the Co-Cathedral fo the Sacred Heart in downtown Houston, so I thought I would go back.

Take a look at the photos and talking slide show conducted last week

This cathedral will be breathtaking from the moment you walk in. I say this and it isn't even completed yet. In fact it won't open until 2008. Linbeck Construction has done a fabulous job so far.

Thoof the news with this aggregation site

Another Digg-like site has surfaced, this one is out of Austin and called Thoof:

One of the guys behind the site also founded Freenet and Revver.

You know the drill, users submit stories, but in this case, you only get the types of stories you are interested in thanks to the fancy sounding 'personalization algorithm.' The site also allows users to update or correct stories they find inaccurate. Ahh, the crowdsourcing element grows.

"Thoof removes the 'angry mob' from determining relevance and controlling the distribution of news," said Josh Morgan, a spokesperson for Thoof. "With Thoof, all users can interact with the news, improving the quality and accuracy of news gathering for active members."

My top 13 pizza restaurants in Houston

So we've looked for the best in Houston barbecue and the top Houston burgers, the best Houston sandwich places and now it's time to eat some pizza!

So take a look at our top 13 pizza restaurants in Houston.

These are always fun to do, because through crowdsourcing, we find all the places we've missed or never heard of. There is no guarantee that we would actually like these places, but at least we know they are there now.

Make sure to visit the page and vote for your favorite pizza place.

VIDEO: Ron Paul interview by Ted Oberg

I will be working this weekend so if you see any typos or think I'm missing an important story, drop me a note.

Here is one thing you won't want to miss.

Ted Oberg interviewed the Houston-area's own presidential candidate Ron Paul. The full interview is at the new In Focus Blog.

People have already disagreed with me on this, but I think he is the new Ross Perot. While maybe not as wealthy, here is a Texas dude who has some cash and is trying to shake up the system up. Being from Texas, I appreciate the outsider who shoots from the hip.

It's not like I'm the only one blogging about him. He appears to be an Internet super star. At least I can confidently say he has a very strong base that watches for articles and blog posts on their boy and swoop into defend him and bolster his star power. There have been some questions concerning how big versus super savvy his web supporters are.

From what I understand, Dr. Paul delivered my wife's cousins.

I hope Banjo Jones likes this one!

The Houstonist funny

I like reading The Houstonist. They put on a good blog over there.

So when I saw a post about a big hotel garage sale at the GRB this weekend, I sent a link over to my wife.

She replied with this:

Did you notice the actual web address? Makes me giggle...

I had not. Here is that Houstonist URL for those keeping score.

http://houstonist.com/2007/08/10/glam_up_your_ho.php

That site's URLs come from the title which is totally innocuous:

Glam up your home at the Houston hotels garage sale

An example of how randomness can be pretty funny.

Why it can be hard to do your job

Miya Shay has an example of how it can be hard for a TV crew to do its job:

This time, he interrupts our Starbucks interview, accuses me of harassing customers, and then says "That's it, I'm calling the police!" before storming off.

Ahhh, the glamorous life of television.

Every TV person has loads of these stories so I will share one with you. One time as a cub reporter I was doing a live shot in front of a house where a man had killed his wife and shot himself in the head earlier in the day. The SWAT team shot tear gas inside the home to end the standoff the man was having with officers. There was a greenish looking film all over the house because of this.

By the time news time rolled around a crew was in the house cleaning it up. We had set the live truck up across the street from the house so it would be in the background. I was standing in front of the camera waiting for the show to start which was about to happen in a matter of seconds. I was the lead that day. The photographer was doing something in the live truck so I was the only visible person at that point. All of a sudden, one of the house cleaning crew members came out and said, "Get that f------ camera off me or I will smash it!"

The odd thing was the camera wasn't even pointing at him. My response threw him off when I said, "Go ahead, it's not my camera." Instead of pursuing this further with me, he just walked off.

Crisis avoided, live shot achieved.

New Fox 26 KRIV anchor is a CNN entertainment reporter

The Insite takes us inside the Fox 26 KRIV building for some juicy secrets. He reports that his station is hiring CNN entertainment reporter Sibila Vargas to replace Jan Jeffcoat. Isiah has more:

Our bosses tell us she will be on the air next month. More of her bio can be found on CNN.com...Welcome to Sibila!

Jan Jeffocat, as many of you know, blew off to the Windy City of Chicago at WFLD and probably hasn't looked back since. That's big city life for you.

Sibila will be able to scoop the competition during American Idol seasons with her connections. Wait, hold on a second. Someone just told me that American Idol is a FOX show so the station will have the scoop anyway. Never mind. Why do I always have to embarrass myself in these situations?

McGuff's insecurities in his head: Maybe you should quit blogging.
McGuff: Now why would I do something like that?
McGuff's insecurities in his head: Well, clearly you just screwed up this post.
McGuff: I didn't think it was THAT bad.
McGuff's insecurities in his head: You were the only one.
McGuff: Wait a minute, that is not very fair.
McGuff's insecurities in his head: You realize you are embarrassing yourself in front of your one reader AND The Insite.
McGuff: This is really not the time nor the place for this.
McGuff's insecurities in his head: Oh, I will be back loser.

Congrats to Sibila and welcome to Houston!

PICS: The nearly naked protest in the Galleria area

Drivers going to lunch down Westheimer and Post Oak in Houston's Galleria area got a surprise today around noon when People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals protested Burberry for the store's alleged stance on fur.

As we all know by now, PETA likes to use unique tactics to get attention for its cause. Based on the amount of honks I heard and the fact a man literally jumped off a METRO bus to snap a picture with his cell phone, I'd say it worked.

I'm sure the girls weren't as hot as the rest of us out there who were taking pictures.

UPDATE:
Here are more pictures from this event.

PICS: The last days of River Oaks Shopping Center

I went down to the North side of the River Oaks Shopping Center to take pictures of the old buildings. Houstonist reported that people are still trying to fight the demolition.

Looks like things are already starting to happen.

Lance Zierlein and 610 KILT officially say goodbye

It looks like Sports Radio 610 KILT and Lance Zierlein are no longer playing together according to the Chron's David Barron:
Lance Zierlein is no longer an employee of KILT (610 AM). He and the station said in a joint statement Monday afternoon that their contract dispute has been settled and that Zierlein has left the station.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, speculation has it that the clock is now ticking on Zierlein's six-month non-compete provision, which was to kick in when his contract expired Nov. 30. If that is the case, since he was taken off the air in early June, he theoretically could return before the end of the year.

Now Lance is not talking about where he is going just yet. One might suspect he'll go up to 1560 KGOW The Game (still KILE at this point). If he does that, he most likely will not be on at night:

Federal Communications Commission officials late last week rejected a request by KGOW (1560 AM) for special temporary authority to add nighttime broadcasts. The request, as described in the agency's ruling, would have permitted nighttime operations while KGOW's owners work to resolve issues surrounding an FCC construction permit for a new night transmitter location.

Supposedly that station will have a web presence at 1560thegame.com so maybe we can find out more there. The fun starts at the new 1560, August 20th.

VIDEO: My appearance on 950 KPRC-AM

Here is some of my appearance on Mojo 950 KPRC-AM with the High Tech Texan Michael Garfield. We talked about all kinds of things and as you might imagine blogging was one of them.

Thanks to all of the comments, positive and negative, I received after the appearance.

Also thanks to Ed Brandon for calling in! That's the power of Facebook. I said in my status that I would be on the radio, he saw it and listened.

You'll be able to hear this broadcast again this coming Saturday at 3pm on 950 KPRC
.

BTW, I used a Flip Video camera to tape this video. Not bad huh? You should see the uncompressed version pre-YouTube - even better.

I'm getting 950 pounds of MOJO live on the radio @ 3pm Saturday

Make sure you turn on your radio to the new MOJO 950 AM (formerly Talk Radio 950 KPRC) today at 3pm.

The High Tech Texan Michael Garfield has made a big mistake and invited me on his first show after the station flipped formats!

I should wear a blond wig and pretend I'm Cynthia Hunt before her first show to drum up some publicity.

Listen live online if you aren't in Houston - the time will be 3pm CST.

I should drink about three Jolt Cola's before walking into that studio with Garf. He has the energy of five men after a Red Bull drinking contest.

More Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver news than you can shake a stick at

It's been a while since I've done a music news roundup, so here we go.

- Appetite for Destruction
- Chinese Democracy
- Gn'r Lies
- Use Your Illusion II
- Use Your Illusion I

If you are a Guns N' Roses fan, you simply must pick up the latest edition of Rolling Stone magazine. They also have tons of old performance video you probably have never seen.

Speaking of unseen footage, I bet you haven't seen this old school Guns N' Roses documentary about photographer Robert John. Highly recommended.

Slash talks about Libertad here. I wonder if Axl Rose is jealous. Matt Sorum says he is.

The Washington Post conducted a great interview with Scott Weiland where he clears the record and talks about reforming with Stone Temple Pilots.

VIDEO: Marvin Zindler and Dom DeLuise come face to face

Dom DeLuise portrayed Marvin Zindler as Melvin P. Thorpe in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, but the two never actually met until the late 90s live on Eyewitness News of all places.

WATCH THAT MEETING HERE

It's as wild as the picture suggests. I purposely created the above graphic with a comic book feel in mind. Can you blame me? The whole event seems like a cartoon. The two even compare themselves to cartoon characters.

On a side note, I had to cut out some of what DeLuise said. Live on the air, he talked about how his next project is a porno movie...he was joking of course but went into too much detail for a family audience! I can just imagine how people behind the scenes responded to that humor.

BTW, I added more classic 70s Marvin stories to the page since the last time I posted.

PIC: The moon looks different in my eyes

I walked out of the station Thursday night after 11 pm, dodged all of the cars speeding out of the parking lot and happened to look to the east. What did I see? A very low hanging red moon!

Once I got home, I grabbed the Nikon and snapped this picture. The moon was higher up by this point and not as red, but still cool looking.

Maybe The Chief knows more.

Ted Oberg has a blog!

Those of you who signed up to the abc13.com blog XML feed got a recent treat. Let me explain.

Ted Oberg started secretly writing on the new In Focus Blog a couple of weeks ago, but wanted a few posts under his belt before we fully unleashed it on the blogosphere. However I sneaked his posts onto the abc13.com blog XML feed as an added bonus to subscribers. Boy was he surprised! Now that is all behind us and quick purchase by me through 1800Flowers.com, everyone can read the blog!

I think he should have called it The O Blog but some might have confused it for something on the old Stevens and Pruett radio show. Also if you've ever spent time in Waco, you know Big O's are giant glasses of beer at George's so maybe it wouldn't have been the best name after all.

Ted is already taking the blog world by storm. His latest post features some investigative work he has done on Texas bridge inspections. Enjoy.

My First Hand Account of Marvin's True Star Power

Just a side note, I did not grow up in the Houston area, so my first encounter with Marvin in public was truly memorable.

I went to work at KTRK in late 2004. I came from KFOR in Oklahoma City and when I announced I was leaving to go work for Eyewitness News, several co-workers that grew up in Houston went on and on about his Marvin Zindler guy. Of course, I just assumed he was a long-time anchor.

My first day at the station and I'm making my rounds, meeting everyone in the building. We stroll into Marvin's office and there is this guy in a white suite, white wig and blue glasses. He was very soft-spoken and told me welcome to the station, it was very nice to meet you. I just stared and thought to myself, "Is this the same guy people in Oklahoma City were going on and on about?"

I'm at the station about a month and he invites me to go to lunch. Mind you, I still had no idea of Marvin Zindler's true star power. Marvin's driving down Westheimer and we're stopped at the light on Post Oak near the Galleria. A man looks over and his eyes almost pop out of his head...the guy throws his car in park and runs over to the window and starts knocking. By this time, I'm speechless and scared to death. He's screaming, "Marvin Zindler! Marvin Zindler!"

Marvin calmly rolls down the window, shakes the man's hand (we're holding up traffic) and talks to him for a moment. I'd never seen anything like that before. Someone the other day said that we lost Houston's Elvis. Marvin Zindler...the man with the biggest heart ever. He'll be deeply missed and Channel 13 will never be the same.

Marvin Zindler's funeral was a very touching service. If you missed it, you can watch the many wonderful speeches given in his memory by the likes of Dave Ward, Melanie Lawson, Lori Reingold, Shara Fryer, Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza, Baptist minister Reverend Bill Lawson, Reverend Kirbyjon Caldwell with the Windsor Village United Methodist Church, Lakewood Church's Pastor Joel Osteen, Rabbi David Lyon and Mark Zindler.

The Marvin Zindler stories continue

There are so many good Marvin Zindler stories traveling around Houston right now. Really good ones in the hallways of KTRK. FYI, this picture is from inside the abc13 lobby.

There was such a great response to the Classic 1970s Marvin Zindler stories I put on abc13.com that I added some more! These are some great stories including one where Marvin poses as a trash collector, talks about the Rice Hotel reopening, takes on some bees, helps a magical rabbit fly and we even get to see one of the first rat and roach reports!

I went to Marvin's visitation. It was surprisingly upbeat in the room outside of where the casket was. Marvin would have wanted it that way. See pictures.

The Marvin memorial outside of the KTRK studios continues to grow. I went out and snapped a few pics.

Michael Penix, who handles sports on this blog, told me a funny story about a trip to lunch he had with Marvin. Hopefully he will post it.
