VIDEO: The Houston Web startup scene on BarCampHouston3 TV

It's been a fun week of BarCampHouston3 TV.  To wrap up the coverage, I talk with Marc Nathan of the Houston Technology Center.  Nathan is very optimistc about the tech scene in Houston currently and in the future.

He talks about how people in Houston are getting hip to Web startups, the big secret to starting a Web company and what Houston must keep doing to be successful.

VIDEO: Hyperlocal journalism with Newstreamz

We all know Chris Doelle from Lone Star Gridiron, but he is also wearing a new hat at this year's BarCamp Houston 3.

His latest project is Newstreamz which is a hyperlocal Web site news effort in San Marcos, TX. From what Doelle says, Newstreamz is doing pretty well in that region with local news and ad sales. When I say hyper local news, I'm not joking. Doelle and crew don't bother with the AP feed realizing folks can get that news somewhere else on the Internet.  The site has gone up against the traditional newspaper and has the motto "Every person should hit the newspaper sometime in their life other than when they are born or when they die."

Find out how the site is breaking news in San Marcos and incorporating citizen journalism into the picture. Plus how the site is using video and if this model could work in Houston.

VIDEO: Rakesh Agrawal of Snapstream on BarCampHouston3 TV

If you work in TV news or PR then you will really want to watch this. Rakesh Agrawal of SnapStream stops by my BarCamp Houston 3 TV to talk about SnapStream Enterprise and Beyond TV.

SnapStream Enterprise is a server you can buy that records up to 10 channels and then lets you search the video with text.  Say you want to see TV shows in your 10 recorded channels that feature the terms "Mike McGuff," "Breaking News," "Dr Pepper Icee" or whatever strikes your fancy.  Instead of searching yourself, the system will send you an email alert as it happens. I'm sure media folks can see the value in this.

Rakesh also talks about how Joel McHale and The Soup producers use the product.

VIDEO: Careflash.com on BarCampHouston3

Tuesday's edition of HoustonBarCamp3 TV features Jay A. Drayer of Houston based careflash.com. Careflash.com is a site that merges social networking with families at hospitals. Basically if you have a loved one in the hospital, you could easily create a community around that person with CareFlash.

Drayer talks about the site's features, benefits and the business model. Could be a big site in the Texas Medical Center.

You can vote to help Drayer's panel “Health 2.0, Hitting a Fever Pitch” present at SXSW Interactive.

Here is my first video of the week from BarCampHouston3!

We talk to Giovanni Gallucci of Dallas-based Viewzi.com. This is a really cool search engine that outputs results in many visual ways. It is built on the API of other search engines. To put it bluntly...it provides stunning visual results.

Giovanni tells us how Viewzi works, how it makes money, its connection to Mark Cuban's Broadcast.com and what it's like to be a tech company in Dallas, Texas.

VIDEO: BarCamp Houston 2 coverage

Better late than never. Here is my coverage of Barcamp Houston 2. Mine took a little longer
because I pulled out the Flip Video camera and decided to cut some mikemcguff.com blog web TV coverage.

Those included in the video are:
I got a lot out of BarCamp Houston, especially in the afternoon sessions. My only wishes would be keeping sessions on time and a microphone for the speakers. Other things that were interesting, Wowio and Spresent, plus Dwight Silverman's Twitter stream coverage.

I used the Flip Video camera to shoot this. I'm sure my TV photographer friends would be wincing in pain from watching this. But when you are shooting with a camera that looks like an iPod, there are some concessions to make with quality. I learned a lot about shooting with the Flip Video. Number 1, pay attention to holding it straight on your subject, but when you are asking questions and concentrating on that, you forget. This video could be the argument against one man bands, but if I had an actual camera it would have turned out very different. Watch out for my Flip Video review soon.
