Ken Hoffman's radio spat with co-hosts on 1560 The Game?

I started getting emails today about Ken Hoffman's radio show on 1560 The Game KGOW in Houston.  Hoffman was saying his co-workers, David Nuno and Raheel Ramzanali (who he says he helped start their radio careers) left and started a show down the radio dial!

Lots of questions, but mikemcguff.com reader Jason thinks this could be a stunt of some sort. Maybe he is right, after all Hoffman does like the WWE!

Former KPRC 2 meteorologist Chuck George profiled

Former KPRC Channel 2 meteorologist Chuck George had his face plastered on the side of a live truck in Houston, and now the Tuscon Weekly is profiling him:

KOLD Channel 13 weather head Chuck George, is not your stereotypical science geek, yet his knowledge, combined with his relentless willingness to take his show to the street, has helped him become one of the most recognizable television-media personalities in the market. READ MORE

This is not the first time we have heard from George. There was a Chuck George action figure fashioned after him.

Of course we can't forget about George's replacement Wes Hohenstein. He pretty much has his own section on this blog. Wes' replacement Byron Miranda isn't doing too shabby around here either.

No I don't have a love affair with former KPRC morning meteorologists. At least I don't think I do. Hey, you don't see an Orelon Sidney section here...yet.

John McCaa of WFAA 8 Dallas profiled

Profile of WFAA Channel 8 Dallas anchor John McCaa in D Magazine:

The John McCaa you don’t know is a self-described “art freak” and onetime R-rated standup comic who was raised in Spain, vacations annually in Italy, and likes nothing more than losing himself in the beat of his in-home drum set.

What’s more, he’s a man who “can listen to an opera and break out in tears.” But seriously, folks, he’s also a playful mimic known to imitate his bosses at work.

“I like to have a lot more fun than people think,” McCaa insists. “And maybe that’ll come out someday on the air. Maybe.” READ MORE

Big time TV theme composer from Houston

William Michael Smith of The Houston Press profiles one of the top Hollywood television show music composers and he is from Houston:

Walden tells it his way, one memory triggering another, not so much talking about his huge success as one of Hollywood's most in-demand television theme creators (thirtysomething, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, The West Wing, Friday Night Lights) as just relishing the small details of his distant Houston past, savoring memories of how he got from Lamar High School to Emmy awards and industry acclaim. That is an impressive list of TV shows that have his name attached. He also went to Lamar like me!

Astroworld reborn as giant rodeo parking lot

I guess I can believe that the old Astroworld land will become a giant Houston rodeo parking lot. What else is it good for? Although we kept hearing how valuable it was before the last ride came down. Oh well.

It's a good excuse to pull out that page I built in October that showcases old video and pictures of Astroworld from the KTRK Channel 13 archives.

10 Predictions for Radio's Next 5 Years

Mark Ramsey of the MusicThinkTank blog takes a stab at the future of radio. Here are two that really stuck out to me:

3. The formats which rise (to the degree that formats rise) will be the ones catering specifically to audiences who are less tech savvy or the old dogs who don’t wish to be taught new tricks. Look for Spanish language radio to be the big winner here along with anything targeting aging Boomers.

9. Much of the non-music content on TV will be simulcast on radio, thus extending the distribution for TV content at a comparatively low cost and reframing many stations as distribution channels for TV - without pictures. CNN, FOX, MSNBC, E!....It will all be on a radio station near you. READ THE REST

Dallas TV anchors tweet about colonoscopy

WFAA Channel 8 in Dallas has been really adding the Twitter accounts lately. Good for them, good way to interact with the audience.

But Uncle Barky is growling at Dale Hansen and Pete Delkus choice of subject matter - Hansen's colonoscopy! Film at 10pm?

If you are into Houston TV news tweets click here.  These are ones I am building for KTRK. Check out the latest which is Houston rodeo news @rodeonews.

Crave Cupcakes

Jason Bargas of Houstonist really likes Crave Cupcakes in Houston's Uptown Park:

CRAVE Cupcakes (no, we're not screaming, that's how they write it) should feel secure in their future despite the economic woes facing Houston.

Quite simply, CRAVE bakes the best cupcakes we've ever tasted - hands down. Better than Mom's. Better than Grandma's. READ MORE

Walt Maciborski and Amanda Salinas anchor 33 KDAF Dallas

Uncle Barky introduces us to Walt Maciborski and Amanda Salinas who are the new anchors at Dallas' KDAF Dallas:

The malaprop-prone Maciborski looks as though he might be good for a few laughs. He also shows a willingness to laugh at his own brand of humor.

Salinas seemed mostly deferential for starters, but has a nice smile. It's early, though, and both anchors are still feeling their way through an hour-long newscast that still mostly measures up to one of the CW-affililated station's signature shows -- Smallville.

On Monday's newscast, departing reporter Norris Deajon's piece on "Finding work through Facebook" was the top-billed attraction. That's hardly surprising. Facebook stories have become ever-present on The 33, where the CW network's prime-time target audience is 18-to-34-year-olds.

That puts new University of North Texas grad Pelpina Trip near the top of the pecking order with her nightly Web-cruising "Pelpina's Picks" segments, during which she invariably touts a "Facebook application." Maciborski gamely teased Monday's dollop, but forgot a consonant in saying, "If you are ready to learn another language, you have a lot of option (sic) these days." READ THE REST

12 Twitter Stream Aggregators To Make You Smarter

When I was in college, I had a hard time going to sleep because I felt like I was going to miss something going on in the dorm. Twitter is the same way. So much to read, so little time.

Well, you can't cheat sleep (I am no good on Ambien trust me) but you can kind of cheat Twitter with aggregators.

SnapStream Mini offers video search for the individual

You might remember my interview with SnapStream CEO Rakesh Agrawal from last summer. We talked about the SnapStream Enterprise server. Now the Houston-based company is targeting the individual or smaller group that wants the same video searching power:

SnapStream Mini is a dual-channel TV search appliance that allows individuals or organizations to record 1000s of hours of television and then search within those television shows for whatever it is they might be looking for. A cross between a DVR and a search engine, the SnapStream Mini gives individuals and organizations the ability to record television, search within those recordings, create TV clips and then take those clips and email, store or burn them to DVD.

Political video blogger Jed Lewison, whose videos have logged more than 15 million views, uses SnapStream to find relevant TV content for his video blog posts. Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton’s Campaign team used SnapStream TV search to stay informed of campaign news and the media's reaction to her campaign's platform.

SnapStream Mini allows organizations to:

- Record 2 channels of traditional TV from regular cable, digital cable, or satellite
- Schedule recordings using a simple program guide
- Search by keyword within recordings
- Get email alerts notifying mentions of keywords on TV
- Create clips and download or email them
- Burn DVDs of full recordings or TV clips

The SnapStream Mini costs $2,000, includes 1 terabyte (TB) of storage (~1000 hours of recorded video) and is geared towards individuals and smaller organizations including bloggers, independent media, classrooms and small media monitoring companies. SnapStream expects to ship the first batch of Minis in the first quarter of 2009.

Michael Garfield talks new 950 KPRC with Mike McGuff

Michael Garfield (aka The High-Tech Texan) will start a new weekday radio show March 2nd at 9am on 950 KPRC.  To find out more I emailed him some questions and he kindly responded.

Mike McGuff:   What will be the topics on your new show?

Michael Garfield: My M-F show will be issue-driven like most daily talk shows - but oh so different. We begin at 9am which is when most people arrive at their offices so business, economy and financial news will certainly be covered. "Local" will always lead so the current Stanford Financial Group news would be an example of Topic A. We'll also keep an eye on the stock market throughout the show (depending if the market itself is in positive numbers by our start date, March 2!).

MM: What about technology?

MG: I am not abandoning technology topics though the discussions will be on larger stories like the recent Facebook flap and how the digital TV conversion is effecting and confusing so many people. I provide analysis to media outlets across the country on tech-related subjects so this venue gives me a chance to really open up and discuss with listeners.

MM: What kind of guests do you plan to bring on?

MG: I really enjoying having guests call-in or come in studio - that's less callers I need to take. ;) But seriously, because of our media outlet we have a unique opportunity to have experts, officials, witnesses and others talk to us with their views and insight. That is something that can rarely be done by any one person via phone call or face-to-face. These people know we have large audiences and we reach out to them to get them on-air and online to start our own local discussions.

We have a team of people that will be scouring headlines and contacting guests across the country to chat with us each morning. I personally have the cell numbers, emails and direct office lines to many Houston city officials and business leaders. If we need them on the show I will quickly work the phones to get them on.

I am also a fanboy of pop culture; you can tell that from my show opening theme to my bump music. Sports, entertainment, lifestyle and music will find its way into the daily show mix. T-Mac's story is hot right now so I'd be al over that but talk about it from an angle of how his $23 million salary next year could have a ripple effect on ticket prices and local economic factors.

MM: If you got a magic wish to book anyone in the world you wanted as a guest, who would it be?

MG:  My magic wish book of guests would one day hopefully lead me to interview some of my idols who steered me to this business. Dick Clark is an icon in the media industry. I grew listening and imitating Casey Kasem, hoping to one day countdown songs on the radio. But just because I personally want to talk to certain people does not mean it would be interesting to my listeners. President Obama would be a "get" as he literally has the burden of our economy and foreseeable future on his shoulders. How is he dealing with that pressure as a man himself? And W isn't doing much these days. Maybe I'll hop up to my hometown of Dallas and do a remote with him one day.

MM: Will you still have a Saturday show? If so, is it changing?

MG: As of now I will still be doing my live 3 hour show on Saturday. That was my request to station management as we discussed the new daily show. We still have many partners and sponsors who want to reach a niche audience plus this show is a staple of The 9-5-0, not unlike my friend Randy Lemmon's GardenLine program on KTRH. The weekend gig allows me to open up and cock around a bit more.

I am proud of the brand and following I began almost ten years ago with The High-Tech Texan®. Technology is my sweet spot and I think I do it differently than anyone else, mostly using my personality and ease of discussion. Not many people want to hear terms like megabytes and Hertz, they want simple answers. I began this "schtick" on Channel 2 back in 2000 and migrated to radio and print using a bit of humor while trying to give smart advice. It is a classic entrepreneur story that more and more people seem to want to hear more nowadays as they are trying to create opportunities for themselves.

Speaking of the increasing jobless rate, we understand more people are out of work and will be tuning in from home or driving to/from interviews. I am creating a special program/project for listeners looking for jobs that I will cover daily on my show. It involves job searches and opportunities that may not be found elsewhere as we will work with some local employment firms for insight, tips and openings. And, of course, I have some fun ideas to hold gatherings, live breakfast remote shows and more.

One very unique thing I will continue to do on the weekday show is utilize my live videoconferencing technology. For over 3 years on my Saturday show I have brought a webcam in studio but use a service for listeners around the world to listen online and use their own webcams to log in. It has been interesting to SEE my listeners and chat with them during breaks. More of my call-in guests are using this so we can see and hear them, too. This technology will continue to grow as more people listen online at their computers and more people don't want to travel.

Android G2 the HTC Magic - the next Google phone

I was hesitant to go after the original Google phone powered by Android. Well, guess what? The next version is coming out and Gizmodo has a review:

HTC has got a very smooth phone, which feels great on your hands and in your pants' pockets. While it's sightly thicker than the iPhone, the narrower, rounded body, and weight makes it feel the same size. For sure, a lot less bulky than the G1, which looks like a brick next to this. And as you have seen in the shots, the final HTC Magic is quite pretty. Have no doubt: This thing alone will make many consumers put up with the less-than-ideal software keyboard. READ MORE

Inside the Twitter office

Ever wonder what it is like inside the world of Twitter? Biz Stone and Evan Williams are profiled in New York Magazine:

The office itself feels like 2000 … but more adult. These guys are smarter than we were. They have only 28 employees, and the office has few decorations, save for two green ceramic deer in the corner and papier-mâché hanging from the ceiling that reads EVERY TWEET COUNTS. A spread of organic cereals is ready for the few people in the office at 10 a.m. There’s a vintage Atari game by the window (Tempest, from 1981), but you have to ask someone to turn it on. It looks as though certain concessions were made at Twitter to What a Web-Company Office Is Supposed to Look Like. Really, it’s like any other office, except there’s hardly anybody there. They’re all working at home. READ MORE

Dallas could tell us the future of Mega 101 KLOL

A couple of months ago I posted how CBS took over 101 KLOL. The question was would the company keep the Mega format or go with something else. We probably have our answer.

Lots of radio folks think that CBS is keeping the Mega format on 101 KLOL. Why? The company just flipped its 'Movin' format in Dallas Fort Worth to the Mega format reports the Fort Worth Star Telegram:

Fans of pop/R&B station KMVK/107.5 FM "Movin’ 107.5" may have been fiddling with their radio dials about 1 p.m. Tuesday, when the station abruptly cut off Madonna’s Vogue and, after a moment of silence, came back with Juanes’ Gotas de Agua Dolce, the very first song played on Spanish adult-contemporary "Mega 107.5 FM." Tribute to fallen sodas

Here is a tribute very close to my heart - fallen sodas. In face Will-E and I talk about Surge all the time.

Why did it die?

I used to drink it to get through a Tuesday 8am class in college after working late due to ABC's Monday Night Football. I felt more extreme those mornings after the first drink. Then Baylor outlawed Coke products in favor of Dr. Pepper so the Surge machine vanished out of the Castellaw Communications Center vending area.

Other featured drinks in the tribute are Crystal Pepsi (yuck), Slice (who cares?), Josta (huh?), Pepsi’s Wild Bunch (another huh?), Pepsi Blue (eewww), Mr. Green (sounds like a toilet cleaner), Pepsi Fire and Pepsi Ice (way too big of themes for drinks), Coke II (good riddance) among others.

List of TV stations to end analog on Tuesday

Many TV stations have followed what the government wants and are delaying the much hyped switched to digital television. Others are jumping in ahead of time (or on schedule depending on how you look at it).

SEE THE LIST

This has already led to the stories about how some viewers won't be able to watch American Idol or whatever big show is on a station that is going to 1s and 0s. Seacrest out.

Why the government delay?  No matter how many slick PSAs hit the air, the reality was more like this.

Joel McHale of The Soup serves it hot in Houston

The wife and I saw Joel McHale of The Soup perform at a packed Verizon Wireless Theater in Houston Sunday night. It was a great show.

McHale, minus a suit and skinny tie, took the stage by storm and immediately went into Ryan Seacrest jokes...this time with F-bombs. Sometimes you sense he holds back on E! and his basic cable clip show, but in his stage show McHale is not afraid to go all the way.

There were a lot of behind the scenes jokes about The Soup, plus a lot of hilarious observations about his father and kids. If you have a chance to see McHale live, take it.

Last Comic Standing season 4 finalist Chris Porter opened with a pretty funny set too. The Nickelback and Axe jokes were right on.

Where has Steve Simon been on 39 News KIAH?

I've noticed that Steve Simon has not been sitting behind the anchor desk much lately on Houston's 39 News KIAH? Don't worry, he is still on the newscast as a reporter though.

In fact the main news anchor (and longtime weekend anchor) of KIAH is now listed as a reporter on his station bio. Notice he used to work at WSVN Miami which was recently a hot topic on this blog for its 1:34 newscast open.

According to a 2002 article by Ken Hoffman in the Houston Chronicle, Simon is dating/married to KPRC reporter (and former weekend anchor) Lisa Baldwin.

Houston Chronicle's CancerDiva loses battle

Sad news to report from the Houston Chronicle blog section:

Our CancerDiva is dead.  Terry Hayes, an administrative assistant in the Chronicle's sports department whose award-winning blog for Chron.com detailed a year in the life of a cancer survivor, died Sunday night at a Houston hospice. She was 42. Hayes spent five years as one of the newspaper's essential support staffers, handling unseen but critical behind-the-scenes tasks, deflecting and distributing calls and complaints, and encouraging — on occasion, demanding — that co-workers live up to her fierce sense of duty and hard work.

VIDEO: One man band standups

Face it. We all know one man bands are coming to TV so we probably just better get used to it.

Yesterday I showed you how KIAH Channel 39 in Houston is hiring what it is calling Multi-Media Journalists.

KGTV San Diego backpack journalist Joe Little makes the best of whatever you want to call it with creative stand-ups. Yeah, actually better than two person crews in some cases.

WATCH

Personally, I might not mind being a backpack journalist, but only for feature/issue stories. Probably not for hard news. I think we will soon see television stations create some backpack journalist positions along with standard crews.

C-47: Houston media publication

Houston has its own media publication called C-47. It's billed as 'Houston's Only Magazine About The Local Television, Video and Film Industry - From The Inside.'

Publisher Hector Luna asked me for an interview and I got to check out a sample issue:

The February issue of C-47 Houston magazine has been distributed. Our cover is The Lone Star Emmy Winner, TV Host, and producer/filmmaker Ms. Nellie Gonzalez. We chatted with Filmmaker/Director Mr. Raymond Gayle, Producer/Actor Mr. Jon-Michael Foshee and Producer/Musician for TV/Film Mr. Scott Szabo. We, also, chatted with the beautiful and delightful Ms. Roxy Vandiver, our February LimeLight actress. Get it now!

Houston TV to get one man bands/back pack journalists

They are called many names. One man bands, backpack journalists or in this case multi-media journalists. Houston could soon see its first backpack journalists on an affiliated station (the now defunct News24Houston did it first on cable):

KIAH 39 News is seeking 2 Multi-Media Journalists. Successful candidate must be able to work in a multi-platform environment. Will be responsible for shooting, editing, writing and voicing stories. Stories will be used both online and on-air. Applicants must be able to cover a diverse range of topics from local entertainment to environmental issues. Candidates must have at least one year of experience in a newsroom environment. A bachelor’s degree is preferred. Photography and non-linear editing skills needed. Previous website experience a plus.

Someone suggested I apply for this. While I have been a TV reporter and still occasionally do a few online only stories for this blog/abc13.com, plus I am a web producer with a Lone Star Emmy Award, I am not sure this opportunity is for me.

VIDEO: How does exercise affect your brain?

My friend Ario works for Google and brought in a great speaker to the Mountain View campus. Molecular biologist Dr. John Medina focuses on the genes involved in human brain development and the genetics of psychiatric disorders:

Most of us have no idea what's really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know--such as the brain's need for physical activity to work at its best.

How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget--and so important to repeat new information? Is it true that men and women have different brains?
In Brain Rules, molecular biologist Dr. John Medina shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule--what scientists know for sure about how our brains work--and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives. For more information go to http://www.brainrules.net /.

Dr. Medina spoke at Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters as part of the Authors@Google program. This talk took place on Tuesday, April 8, 2008.

I take particular interest in this because Dr. Median talks about how exercise through the week can increase cognitive function and stave off diseases like Alzheimer's.

People hating on Houston

I twittered about a post I wrote on April 18, 2006 that is still getting reader comments. It's called 'Why do people hate Houston?' and I figure that people who really hate the city Google those words, find it and comment.  Lots of animus towards my birth city too.  Since I twittered about the post, it has received even more mean spirited comments.

CHECK IT OUT

Part of the reason I started this blog was to show off some positive aspects of the much-maligned fourth largest US city. Instead I became a sounding board.

Here is the most recent comment:

I was born in Houston and lived there until I was 18 years old. I agree that the people in Houston are nasty , rude, arrogant, and ignorant. I had to go to grade school with some of these people. I can't imagine how they are now as adults. I moved to Colorado after I graduated from college. I only visit Houston to see my family. I can only stay there for a week. Once I moved to another environment, I was able to look back and see how ugly the people were. I truely believe that many people who live in Houston develop a negative attitude early on in their lives. They tend to feed off of one another's rudness an stupidity. I am so happy that I don't live there anymore. I would suggest to anyone living in Houston for the jobs/housing; Save your money and move out of the city. I hear Austin is more civil. READ MORE

VIDEO: MySpace founders on Charlie Rose

I was surprised to see MySpace founders Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe on Charlie Rose. In face I am surprised to see any mention of MySpace anywhere really.

This goes for what I see online and with the kids. I go to Houston area high schools as a part of my job and talk to classes. Every time I take the opportunity to do a little polling...MySpace or Facebook? (Most teens don't know about Twitter.) Almost in every instance, the students all use Facebook and have kind of given up on MySpace.

I understand MySpace has big numbers, but I just personally do not know anyone who still uses it. Is the site about to have a big comeback with the so-called MySpace 3.0? Sounds like a PR thing.

15 Companies That Might Not Survive

We've seen massive layoffs and now some experts predict the end of the retailers/businesses in most of our lives (Lehman Brothers was not an entity a lot of Americans dealt with).

The ones that jumped out of me the most are Sbarro, Six Flags (couldn't keep Astroworld open), Blockbuster (Netflix, cable companies and Web do damage), Krispy Kreme, Landry's Restaurants and Sirius (XM) Satellite Radio (what the heck will I do if this goes away?).

VIDEO: The craziest TV newscast open

Miami Fox affiliate WSVN is famous in TV news circles for being very over the top. You might even recognize the station's set as the inspiration for the old News2Houston KPRC set.

Ted of Saltine Crackers with Tab declares WSVN's 10pm newscast the world's worst television news open.

I love it because it is so over the top. If I was a reporter at a station like that I would be jumping at the chance every night to out do everyone including my performance from the night before!

If the news managers wanted props, I'd give them props. What about me holding up a gun and firing blanks into the air? Or maybe sawing the head off a mannequin? (Although I can't think of how this would fit most stories) What about me wearing Gene Simmons KISS makeup one night? Although I would somehow owe Mr. Simmons a royalty payment for that.

Any other ideas?

Jeremy Desel returns to KHOU Channel 11

Reporter Jeremy Desel of KHOU Channel 11 is recovering from open heart surgery. He returns to the news this week:

At age 39, he is two months removed from open heart surgery to repair a defect that could have struck him down in the middle of the newsroom or, for that matter, in the middle of Galveston Island during Hurricane Ike.

“I look back now and see things that should have been red flags, things that I wrote off at the time to the fact that I had a baby at home,” he said. “What this has taught me is to listen to my body and to see my doctor at least once a year.” READ MORE

How local TV sites can take advantage of papers

I haven't found myself linking to the Lost Remote in some time, but Cory Bergman has caused some waves on the Internet with his latest post, How local TV sites can take advantage of papers.

I agree with a lot of what Bergman suggests, but with shrinking budgets, I don't see it being possible in many cases.

I enjoy watching Google's campus guest speaker series. We have a Texas guy this time:

Does what's on your desk reveal what's on your mind? Do those pictures on your walls tell true tales about you? And is your favorite outfit about to give you away? For the last ten years psychologist Sam Gosling has been studying how people project (and protect) their inner selves. By exploring our private worlds (desks, bedrooms, even our clothes and our cars), he shows not only how we showcase our personalities in unexpected-and unplanned-ways, but also how we create personality in the first place, communicate it others, and interpret the world around us. Gosling, one of the field's most innovative researchers, dispatches teams of scientific snoops to poke around dorm rooms and offices, to see what can be learned about people simply from looking at their stuff.

Sam Gosling is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. He has spent the last decade conducting research on how personality is expressed and perceived in everyday contexts. He has been profiled by the New York Times, Psychology Today, and other publications, and he is featured in Malcolm Gladwell's Blink.

Behind the scenes of TMZ

I see this behind the scenes look at TMZ.com as a potential local TV work flow blueprint of the future:

"A couple of ingest people drag and drop the content directly into the Dalet media library," said Comeau. "The loggers begin entering metadata for all this content and, at the same time, pick off the best images, which go into a shot list for the producers who walk in at 6 a.m. and start working on the stories."

According to Faust, National TeleConsultants integrated the Dalet system with an HP SAN, with 26 terabytes of online storage and 24 terabytes of archived storage, and an Omneon Spectrum media server system for ingest and play-out of the video feeds.

At 6:30 a.m., (creator/executive producer/on-air personality Harvey) Levin and the preditors (a contraction of producer-editor), who are ensconced in their cubicles, discuss the stories they're working on. That meeting is taped and forms the basis of each day's show. The preditors' reports introduce the video clips.)

[snip]

The show's preditors then begin putting the stories together with the Dalet system, and searching the archive for other relevant clips, which they can quickly retrieve in proxy resolution. "Within one system, they have access to years of Britney Spears," said Comeau.

Using Dalet's embedded newsroom computer system, each preditor writes the script, associating relevant clips. The resulting EDL (edit decision list) is then transferred to one of the 12 Apple Final Cut Pro workstations.

"By hitting one button, the EDL is sent to a Final Cut Pro editor and it'll be in the timeline," said Faust. The EDL links archived proxies to high-resolution versions in the background, invisible to the editor. READ THE REST

I am not saying all stations should run out and buy a Dalet system or Final Cut, but the workflow seems to be streamlined a bit for quicker turn around. Local TV stations are under pressure to get news quickly to the Web and breaking news on the air.  It doesn't take a genius to figure out the current way of doing things doesn't look like it will last for a long time.

David Barron of the Houston Chronicle was shocked to see KPRC Channel 2 in Houston air a 'cheat on your spouse' Super Bowl ad:

On the local advertising front, I was surprised to see that KPRC (Channel 2) accepted an advertisement for AshleyMadison.com, the Web site that helps arrange extra-marital affairs for married men and women.
AshleyMadison.com bought time last year on KILT (610 AM) and the Houston Texans radio network, but the ads were dropped after the Texans objected.

5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

At work and want to make a cake? But don't have an oven?

The Bald Heretic has a way to make a cake in a mug with a microwave. Just grab the ingredients and your favorite coffee cup and go.

Although I don't think you can use this method to bake a Texas chocolate gun cake.
