“I’m thrilled to be joining a news organization with such a profound commitment to family and community,” Romero said in a release. “It is an honor to represent KENS 5 on the evening anchor desk and continue their legacy of excellence.”

San Antonio viewers will recognize Romero from her long anchor tenure with San Antonio competitor KSAT 12.

The Romero and KENS 5 connection

Phil Anaya, Romero’s husband is the co-anchor with Alicia Neaves of KENS 5’s weekend newscasts.

"Big news!! My best friend and better half is coming to KENS 5," Anaya posted to Facebook.

“KENS 5 always has been part of our family’s story,” Romero added. “Over the years, our family has gone through blessings and challenges, and KENS 5 has supported us through it all. The station has a culture of caring, where you are truly treated like family.”

“Isis has a great connection with the people of San Antonio, and as a station with deep roots in the community, we believe she’s found a great home in KENS 5,” said Tom Cury, KENS San Antonio's president and general manager.

Romero's TV news resume

Romero anchored for KSAT from 2010 to the summer of 2021. Before San Antonio television news, Romero worked for FOX 10 Phoenix KSAZ, Arizona and KZTV Action 10 News Corpus Christi.

The South Texas native, who grew up in Robstown, graduated from the The University of Texas at Austin.

Active in the community, Romero is a member of the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists and mentors young journalists along with her other non-profit work.

In 2021, Romero won a Lone Star EMMY Award for her work as host in "Special Event Coverage" of the Day Of The Dead River Parade.

“Being able to stay in San Antonio is a blessing,” Romero said. “I am honored to be able to continue serving the people of San Antonio and South Texas.”

KENS 5 #1 in Morning News Ratings Race May 2020

Ratings Show Significant Growth in Evening Newscasts

The morning newscast is helmed by veteran anchors Sarah Forgany, Barry Davis, Audrey Castoreno and meteorologist Paul Mireles.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio viewers have made KENS 5 Eyewitness News This Morning the city’s most watched morning newscast in the recently completed May Nielsen ratings race. In preliminary results released by Nielsen, the CBS station led viewership from 4:30 to 7 a.m. in Total Households as well as the key Adults 25-54 demographic (the main advertiser target audience for news programming.)

This May win in multiple key demographics, including Total Viewers, is the station’s first since 2009.

The morning newscast, helmed by veteran anchors Sarah Forgany, Barry Davis, Audrey Castoreno and meteorologist Paul Mireles, has seen significant growth over the past several months, culminating in the May win.

In February, KENS 5 took first place in Adults 25-54 from 4:30 to 6 a.m.

“We have created a newscast that truly represents the people of San Antonio. During the last few months, we have given viewers critical updates on the coronavirus response, along with signature segments such as ‘Verify,’ ‘Who’s Hiring’ and ‘Texas Outdoors,’” said Jack Acosta, KENS 5 executive news director. “I couldn’t be prouder of the hard work being done by every single person working the early shift at KENS 5.”

In addition to the win in the morning, KENS 5 saw significant viewership growth in its 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts compared with May 2019.

>>>>>>>>TOTAL HOUSEHOLDS | ADULTS 25-54
5 p.m. -------- +3% ------------ +20%
6 p.m. -------- +25% ------------ +100%
10 p.m. -------- +16% ------------ +49%

“We are honored that San Antonio continues to trust KENS 5, making us No. 1 among morning viewers,” said Tom Cury, KENS 5 president and general manager. “We have seen continued growth for all of our newscasts since 2019, and in May, no other station in San Antonio grew as much as KENS 5.”

KENS 5’s evening newscasts feature Deborah Knapp, Aaron Wright, Sharon Ko, weather chief Bill Taylor and sportscaster Joe Reinagel.

KENS 5 names Jeff Vaughn as new anchor

The speculation is over. It turned out not to be Jeff Brady (former WFAA 8 anchor) or ABC newsman Jim Avila to take over KENS 5 anchor Chris Marrou's gig but Jeff Vaughn of KSHB-TV Kansas City:

KENS 5 has named Jeff Vaughn, an award-winning broadcast journalist, as its new evening news anchor, KENS-TV President and General Manager Bob McGann announced Tuesday morning.

Vaughn, who most recently has been the morning news anchor for KSHB-TV, the NBC affiliate in Kansas City, Mo., will succeed Chris Marrou, the veteran KENS 5 news anchor who is retiring from the station after 36 years on the air.

"We are elated to have a journalist of Jeff's caliber joining the KENS 5 team," McGann said.

Prior to his work in Kansas City, Vaughn was a weekend morning anchor and general assignment reporter at WDIV-TV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit. Vaughn has Texas roots as an anchor and reporter at KCBD-TV in Lubbock and as a reporter at KMID-TV in Midland. Vaughn is a graduate of Kansas State University.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to join KENS 5 and deliver the news to San Antonians," Vaughn said Tuesday. "I'm happy to be coming back to Texas, and my wife and I can't wait to move to San Antonio and get immersed in the culture."

Vaughn has been recognized for outstanding broadcast journalism work. He won a regional EMMY Award in 2005 for anchoring WDIV's weekend morning newscast. He also has been honored by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Texas Associated Press and the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.

"As we turn the corner on a new era in KENS 5 television, I am extremely pleased and excited about Jeff joining our team as we look forward to our 60th year on the air," said KENS news director Kurt Davis.

Vaughn will begin appearing on air in January. READ IT

Deborah Knapp announces retirement from KENS 5 San Antonio

After nearly five decades of dedicated service to the people of San Antonio, award-winning journalist and beloved news anchor Deborah Knapp has announced her retirement from KENS 5, effective May 21, 2025 on the 5pm newscast.

UPDATE MAY 2025
Watch her sign-off KENS 5 and tribute special

“It’s been an honor to serve the wonderful people of San Antonio in this city I love for nearly 50 years,” Knapp said. “I love my KENS 5 family, so it was not an easy decision. I am thrilled to continue working with our talented staff as a mentor, and I will remain active with the Alamo Colleges Foundation.”

Deborah’s journey in broadcast journalism began in 1977 when she walked across the stage at The University of Texas at Austin, diploma in hand, and started the very next day as a “weekend weather girl” at KSAT. A year later, she was hired as weekend anchor at KENS 5, eventually co-anchoring the 5 p.m. newscast with Fred Lozano.

In 1980, Deborah took her talents to Philadelphia, anchoring the 5 and 11 p.m. newscasts at WCAU, before returning home to San Antonio and KENS 5 in 1987 following the birth of her daughter.

“For decades, Deborah has been the heart of our newsroom and a shining example of our commitment to both journalism and community,” said Tom Cury, KENS 5 president and general manager. “She embodies the spirit of San Antonio and the values of KENS 5 with unmatched grace and professionalism. While we’ll miss seeing her at the anchor desk every day, we wish her all the joy and fulfillment this next chapter brings.”

Knapp described news director Jack Acosta as “a joy to work for,” and he shares the admiration. “Working with Deb has been an absolute pleasure,” Acosta said. “She’s been a mentor to so many in our newsroom and a trusted colleague every step of the way.”

As she transitions into retirement, Deborah says she looks forward to more family time and enjoying the simple joys of life.

“I look forward to cherishing moments with my mother, children and grandchildren,” she said. “And I plan to spend more time dancing!”

Details about Deborah’s final broadcast date and on-air celebration plans will be announced in the coming weeks.

Joe Reinagel to retire from KENS 5 San Antonio

Joe Reinagel retired from his KENS 5 San Antonio sports director role after 25 years on February 28, 2022.

UPDATE JUNE 2022
Nate Ryan joins KENS San Antonio

"It is always difficult to make big decisions like this, but the time is right," Reinagel said on the KENS 5 website. "I have been incredibly blessed to be a part of such an iconic television station for so long."

And his time with KENS 5 has been long.  The station points out Reinagel is only "the second main evening sportscaster in the history of KENS 5." Reinagel started with the now TEGNA station in 1997 and took over for Dan Cook who retired in 2000.

"We are definitely sad to see Joe go but we understand his desire to spend more time with his precious grandchildren," said Tom Cury, the station’s president and general manager. "We’re grateful for the 25 years Joe has given KENS 5 and sports fans throughout South Texas."

But San Antonio sports fans shouldn't be too upset, as Reinagel is joining San Antonio Sports Star’s afternoon show "The Blitz" with Jason Minnix on 1250 AM KZDC and 94.5 FM. "The Blitz" airs 4pm to 7pm Monday through Friday.

"It’s funny how life comes full circle," Reinagel told 550 AM KTSA News. "I started my broadcast career here in this building and now I’m back."

According to LinkedIn, Reinagel got his start in broadcasting at KTFM/KTSA back in 1994.

Through his San Antonio sports career, the South Texas born and raised Reinagel had a courtside view of all five Spurs championships.

“I am grateful to those who have tuned in throughout the years, it has been a great honor being a part of your lives for 25 years," Reinagel added. "The people I have had the pleasure to work with over the years have all been professionals, the best at what we do. But they’re also kind, loving people who care deeply for this community. I have made many lifelong friends here."

The Texas State University grad has also been a Licensed Realtor with eXp Realty, LLC.

So who will take Reinagel's sports job?

We know that KENS 5 sports journalist Vinnie Vinzetta has taken himself out of running.

Here is part of what Vinzetta posted to Facebook:

"I’ve declined any consideration for the job. Nine out of ten probably wouldn’t, but right now I’m that one. I’ve spent some time in prayer, and thought, and my heart kept coming back to the same place. I’m comfortable, and at peace with the decision.

I’m at different places in life these days. I’m still dreaming big about other things. But I’m really enjoying engaging with the community every day. Going to practices, games, reporting from the field, feature storytelling, our Forever Family series and anchoring weekdays and weekends when needed. My on air time is plenty.

I’ve always appreciated the support, and I’ve always approached every opportunity with positivity as much as possible. We’ve got two spots to fill, our weekend sports anchor position, and our new Sports Director. Those will be huge shoes to fill as Joe enjoys, and well deserved, the next phase of his life."

Lozano, co-anchor of KENS5 Eyewitness News This Morning, the station’s popular weekday morning newscast, has been a fixture in local television news for more than three decades.

“Fred Lozano is one of the finest journalists I have experienced the pleasure of working with in television,” said KENS 5 President and General Manager Robert McGann. “He has been the rock of stability on our morning news since 1997. I cannot thank Fred enough for his contributions to the success of KENS.”

“Fred is a consummate journalist who always covers the news with a sense of immediacy and professionalism. He has a unique rapport with the viewers and will be truly missed in the newsroom,” added KENS 5 Executive News Director Kurt Davis.

Winner of multiple Emmy Awards and numerous other broadcast journalism honors, Lozano is a native of San Antonio and a graduate of Brackenridge High School. He is the father of three sons, including twin boys.

KENS 5 San Antonio re-signs Deborah Knapp and Sue Calberg

Deborah Knapp

KENS 5 has announced veteran news anchor Deborah Knapp and reporter Sue Calberg have extended their contracts with the San Antonio station.

LAST WEEK IN SA NEWS
Six KSAT San Antonio journalists leaving

Knapp has been with the CBS station for 37 years and Calberg for 22 years.

“It’s important to us to have a newsroom filled with local expertise. Deborah and Sue know San Antonio like no one else, having spent most of their lives here. They have a strong passion for our community and fight to bring important local stories to our viewers each and every day,” said Jack Acosta, news director for KENS 5.

“I’m thrilled to continue serving the people of San Antonio,” said Knapp. “This is the city I grew up in and the station I’ve worked at most of my adult life. I am so fortunate to work with a wonderfully talented team I love and respect. Management at KENS 5 let me know I’m welcome to stay as long as I’d like and in today’s world, that’s a blessing.”

Calberg added, “There are so many stories left to tell and I’m excited to extend my long career with the station I love. KENS 5 puts their money where their mouth is. We really are San Antonio’s Own.”

Calberg grew up on the city’s east side and has worked as a journalist in her hometown for the past 44 years. Knapp, a graduate of MacArthur High School, grew up on the northeast side and has been inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame. She serves as Treasurer on the Alamo Colleges Foundation Board and Chairs Las Misiones which restores and preserves our historic San Antonio Missions.

“We’re happy that Deborah and Sue have decided to continue here at KENS 5. They are both strong leaders for our newsroom and share our commitment to serving our community with their hometown perspective,” said Tom Cury, President and General Manager for KENS 5.

Knapp anchors the station’s 5 p.m. news while Calberg can be seen weekdays on the station’s newscasts and streaming service, KENS 5 +.

Phil Anaya leaves KENS 5 San Antonio

Phil Anaya announced he is leaving KENS 5 San Antonio after 14 years, where he is a weekend anchor:

"For 14 years, I’ve had the joy and privilege of delivering your local news each weekend. We’ve seen a lot together- from a brutal winter storm that crippled our state, to more positive memories like our beloved Spurs winning their 5th title!

You’ve also shared personal moments with me, including watching me become a husband and father, and celebrating my family along the way.  However, as our family’s needs change, I’ve decided now is the time for me to step down from TV news.  This is bittersweet for me, because I truly love journalism and KENS 5!

So what’s next? Aside from spending more time with my family on the weekends, I’ve also reignited a passion of mine in soccer. In addition to coaching my kids, many young players have quickly come to know me as 'Coach Phil' as I help them develop their skills.

It’s been an amazing experience serving as KENS 5’s weekend news anchor.  Thank you to my incredible colleagues and friends who I will miss tremendously, and thank you to the KENS 5 management team for supporting my decision and family!

Most of all, thank you to the people of San Antonio for the opportunity to serve you all these years!"

Anaya joined KENS 5 as a reporter in June 2011.

While covering a fire, he met his future wife, now KENS evening anchor Isis Romero, while she was still a KSAT 12 reporter.

"There is something immensely special about having a spouse as a colleague," Romero posted in response to her husband's career announcement.  "KENS 5 has been so good to our family! I’m excited for my husband and grateful he spent the bulk of his career in such an amazing newsroom. Thank you San Antonio for supporting him all these years!"

On April 28, 2012, Anaya was promoted to weekend co-anchor with Karen Grace, alongside meteorologist Jared Silverman and sportscaster Vinnie Vinzetta.

Before San Antonio, Anaya began his journalism career as a bureau reporter for KFOX 14 El Paso.

Originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Anaya grew up playing soccer and left the state to attend Valparaiso University.  After two years, he transferred to New Mexico State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications with a minor in Marketing.

While still in college, Anaya gained valuable experience working as a multimedia journalist for KMSB FOX 11 Tucson, Arizona.
